<p>The Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex is 390 light-years away from us. This enables us to take a crisp close-up. And James Webb Space Telescope, the most powerful orbital observatory ever built, is much more than being just up to the job.</p>

<p>"In just one year, the James Webb Space Telescope has transformed humanity's view of the cosmos, peering into dust clouds and seeing light from faraway corners of the universe for the very first time," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson as quoted by the AFP.</p>

<p>"Every new image is a new discovery, empowering scientists around the globe to ask and answer questions they once could never dream of."</p>

<p>The image clicked by James Webb Space Telescope shows around 50 young stars. These stars are similar in mass to our Sun or are smaller. Some of them are showing signature shadows of circumstellar disks. This is a sign that planets may eventually form around them.</p>

<h2><strong>Huge hydrogen jets</strong></h2>

<p>The image shows huge jets of hydrogen which are horizontal in the upper third of the image, and vertical on the right.</p>

<p>"These occur when a star first bursts through its natal envelope of cosmic dust, shooting out a pair of opposing jets into space like a newborn first stretching her arms out into the world," the US space agency said in a statement.</p>

<p>"At the bottom of the image, you can see a young star that's energetic enough that it's blowing a bubble in the cloud of dust and gas from which it was born," Christine Chen, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which operates Webb, told AFP.</p>

<p>She added that the young star is doing so through a combination of its light and a solar wind linked to it.</p>

<p>There is a lot of gas and dust in the intersteller medium. This eventually provides raw material for new star and planets.</p>

<p>"Webb's image of Rho Ophiuchi allows us to witness a very brief period in the stellar life cycle with new clarity. Our own Sun experienced a phase like this, long ago, and now we have the technology to see the beginning of another star's story," said Webb project scientist Klaus Pontoppidan as quoted by AFP.</p>

<p>James Webb telescope was launched in December 2021. The first full colour picture clicked by the telescope was revealed by US President Biden on July 11, 2022.</p>

<p>James Webb Space Telescope of space agency NASA has discovered the most distant supermassive black hole to date, which appears to be active, said the agency on Thursday.<br />

The galaxy, which is called CEERS 1019, has lived for more than 570 million years after the big bang, and the black hole present in it is less massive compared to any other yet discovered in the early universe.<br />

Meanwhile, 11 galaxies which existed when the universe had lived for only 470 to 675 million years have also been identified by the James Webb telescope, stated NASA.<br />

The black hole found inside CEERS 1019 shares similarities with the one present at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy, which is 4.6 million times greater than the mass of the sun, NASA added. The newly-discovered black hole is also not as bright as the massive behemoths which have been detected previously.</p>

NASA stated that the black hole, though smaller, existed so many years back that astronomers are finding it difficult to explain how it was formed after the universe began.</p>

<p>The James Webb telescope helps scientists find and verify theories using more precise information, in comparison to other telescopes. According to NASA, researchers can see how much gas is being ingested by the black hole and determine the star-formation rate of its galaxy.<br />

Astronomer at the University of Texas at Austin Steven Finkelstein said, "Until now, research about objects in the early universe was largely theoretical. With Webb, not only can we see black holes and galaxies at extreme distances, we can now start to accurately measure them. That's the tremendous power of this telescope."</p>

<p>The image was taken as part of the Webb Guaranteed Time Observation program 1247- which included very deep exposures of Saturn, which were designed to test the telescope’s capacity to detect faint moons around the planet and its bright rings.</p>

<h2><strong>What does the image reveal?</strong></h2>

<p>As per the blog post, the image revealed details within Saturn's ring system along with several of the planet’s moons – Dione, Enceladus, and Tethys. The additional deeper exposures would allow NASA to investigate Saturn's fainter rings- including the G ring and the E ring.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA says the rings surrounding Saturn are mostly broad, with a few singular narrow gaps between the broader rings. There is an innermost, thicker ring, and next to it is a brighter, wider ring.</p>

<p>Travelling farther outward, there is a small dark gap before another thicker ring. In the thicker ring, there is a narrow faint band. There is then an outermost, faintest, thinnest ring, the space agency adds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The post further said that Saturn's atmosphere also showed surprising and unexpected detail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Although the Cassini spacecraft observed the atmosphere at greater clarity, this is the first time that the planet’s atmosphere has been seen with this clarity at this particular wavelength (3.23 microns), which is unique to Webb," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The large, dark, diffuse structures in the northern hemisphere do not follow the planet’s lines of latitude, so this image is lacking the familiar striped appearance that is typically seen from Saturn’s deeper atmospheric layers.&nbsp;</p>

"The portion of Jezero Crater the rover and helicopter are currently exploring a lot of rugged terrains, which makes communications dropouts more likely," said Ingenuity team lead Josh Anderson, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, in a statement.<br />

"The team’s goal is to keep Ingenuity ahead of Perseverance, which occasionally involves temporarily pushing beyond communication limits. We're excited to be back in communications range with Ingenuity and receive confirmation of Flight 52,” Anderson added.</p>

<p>An important part of the mission is advancing commercial opportunities in space. NASA is looking to quantify potential resources including energy, water and lunar soil as a goal to attract commercial investment, said Gerald Sanders, who is a rocket scientist at NASA.</p>

<p>He said that developing access to resources on the moon will be key to cutting costs and developing a circular economy.</p>

<p>"We are trying to invest in the exploration phase, understand the resources... to (lower) risk such that external investment makes sense that could lead to development and production," he told a mining conference in Brisbane.</p>

<p>"We are literally just scratching the surface," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Test drill rig</strong></h2>

<p>At the end of the month, NASA will send a test drill rig to the moon. By 2032, it plans a larger-scale excavation of moon soil and a pilot processing plant.</p>

<p>It is expected that the first customers would be commercial rocket companies. These would use the moon's resources for fuel or oxygen.</p>

<p>Samuel Webster, an assistant director at the agency said that the Australian Space Agency is involved in making a semi-autonomous rover which will take samples of the lunar soil during a NASA mission as early as 2026.</p>

<p>The rover will demonstrate how the lunar soil will be collected, the soil that contains oxygen in form of oxides.</p>

<p>Using separate equipment sent to the moon with the rover, NASA will aim to extract that oxygen, he said.</p>

<p>"This ... is a key step towards establishing a sustainable human presence on the moon, as well (as) supporting future missions to Mars," he said at the conference.</p>

NASA aims for lunar mining by next decade

<p>A newly discovered exoplanet called LP 890-9c, located 98 light-years away from Earth, could provide insights into how habitable planets like Earth can transform into inhospitable worlds like Venus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The exoplanet orbits a small and cool red dwarf star, and its position near the inner edge of the star's habitable zone makes it an intriguing candidate for study.</p>

<h2><strong>SPECULOOS-2c: Venus-like or Earth-like exoplanet</strong></h2>

<p>The exoplanet LP 890-9c or SPECULOOS-2c was discovered back in September 2022. As per Space.com, the planet has a diameter greater than Earth by about 40 per cent. Just like our planet orbits the Sun, this small and cool planet also orbits its star — every 8.5 Earth days at a distance of 1.7 million miles or 2.8 million kilometres.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"LP 890-9 c lies very close to the inner edge of the conservative habitable zone (HZ)". However, despite the exoplanet's proximity to its star, the planet is cool. In comparison, Earth is 152.07 million kilometres away from the sun.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This as per researchers, means that even close to a star, a planet's temperatures can be mild.</p>

<h2><strong>LP 890-9c, Venus and habitable planets</strong></h2>

<p>Using the exoplanet as a model, a research team led by Lisa Kaltenegger from the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University has modelled the possible climatic and atmospheric states of LP 890-9c and explored how the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) could distinguish between them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>LP 890-9c's location in its planetary system is similar to Venus' position in our solar system, with both planets positioned at the inner edge of the habitable zone.</p>

<p>While Venus became an inhospitable world due to a runaway greenhouse effect, not all planets in similar positions will necessarily follow the same path.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Venus lacks a magnetic field, which allowed the solar wind to strip away its water molecules. However, if LP 890-9c possesses a strong magnetic field, it may be able to retain water vapour in its atmosphere and maintain habitability.</p>

<p>"Looking at this planet will tell us what's happening on the inner edge of the habitable zone — how long a rocky planet can maintain habitability when it starts to get hot," said Kaltenegger in a statement.</p>

<p>The team developed models of LP 890-9c based on measured parameters such as mass and radius. The models also considered factors such as chemical composition, surface temperature, atmospheric pressure, cloud cover, and more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Five different models were created, ranging from an Earth-like planet but hotter, to varying degrees of atmospheric water vapour and greenhouse effects, culminating in a model resembling Venus.</p>

<p>"This planet is the first target where we can test these different scenarios," said Kaltenegger.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If it's still a hotter Earth — hot, but with liquid water and conditions for life — then the inner edge of the habitable zone (around all stars) could be teeming with life," speculated the researcher.</p>

Even if LP 890-9c proves too hot for life, studying its evolution and fate can provide valuable information about Earth's own future as our sun continues to evolve and grow brighter.</p>

<p lang="en-US">While addressing a meeting being held on next-generation space communication at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in London, Suzuki emphasised interplanetary communications network which will have inbuilt AI to detect, and also fix glitches and inefficiencies as and when they occur.<br />

“It then alerts mission operators that there is a likelihood that package transmissions from space vehicle X will be lost or will fail delivery. We cannot send an engineer up in space whenever a space vehicle goes offline or its software breaks somehow,” she said.<br />

A natural language interface will also be inbuilt in the system which will allow mission control and astronauts to talk to it and will save them from scouring technical manuals for finding relevant information. Suzuki expressed hope that astronauts will in future be able to seek advice on how to perform complex manoeuvres or space experiments.</p>

Suzuki added that an approach like federated learning can allow a fleet of robotic rovers, which are searching for water or specific minerals on a distant planet, to provide relevant information back to Earth without beaming large amounts of the data.<br />

“The spacecraft do collaborative updates based on what’s seen by other spacecraft. It’s a technique to do distributed learning – to learn in a collaborative way without … bringing all that data to the ground,” she stated.</p>

<p>“On space, we will be able to announce that India is signing the Artemis Accords, which advance a common vision for space exploration for the benefit of all humankind,” a senior administration official said hours before the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden in the Oval Office. <p>The Artemis Accords bring like-minded countries together on civil space exploration. The Accords are grounded in the Outer Space Treaty (OST) and are a non-binding set of principles designed to guide civil space exploration and use in the 21st century.&nbsp;</p>

<p>GE Aerospace has said that the agreement includes possible joint production of GE Aerospace's F414 engines in India.</p>

<p>The two countries are working together on 5G and 6G technologies and Open Radio Access Networks (RAN) systems.</p>

<p>The startled resident of Las Vegas, while speaking to a 911 dispatcher, said, “It has big eyes and it’s looking at us." As per reports, the report appeared credible to the officers and they responded to the scene on May 1.</p>

<p>The officer is then seen reassuring the men and saying, “I’m not gonna BS you guys. One of my partners saw something fall out of the sky, too.”</p>

<p>In the footage captured by the body cam of another officer, a glowing green orb is seen falling from the sky.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>'Nothing landed in Las Vegas'</strong></h2>

<p>The footage was recorded on the fireball logs of the American Meteor Society’s fireball logs but was not added to those of NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies, or CNEOS.</p>

<p>“The CNEOS website only captures reports for objects that are estimated to have exceeded one metre in size based on the observed total energy released—in other words natural objects which were large enough to be categorised as asteroids prior to entering Earth’s atmosphere,” explained Johnson. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Juno, which has been roaming near Jupiter since 2016 has already completed more than 50 flybys and made close passes by three of the planet's largest moons.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists associated with the spacecraft say they will be unearthing more fascinating discoveries in the coming months as the mission gets much closer to Jupiter's surface.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Our upcoming flybys in July and October will bring us even closer, leading up to our twin flyby encounters with Io in December of this year and February of next year, when we fly within 1,500 kilometers of its surface,” Scott Bolton, Juno principal investigator was quoted as saying by CNN.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, Juno's orbit around Jupiter is shifting closer over time, allowing scientists more opportunities to keep a close eye on the planet. The spacecraft is expected to go between some of Jupiter's rings as well which will help learn more about their origin and composition.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA has released three videos. In each of these videos, the carbon emission from different parts of our world is shown. In addition to carbon emissions, carbon absorption due to trees and oceans is shown as well. The videos show CO2 being released in the year 2021.</p>

<p>Carbon emissions due to the burning of fossil fuels are represented by the colour orange. Red represents the burning of biomass. Green denotes land ecosystems and blue stands for oceans. Blue dots show where carbon dioxide is being absorbed by oceans and green dots are representing CO2 absorption by trees.</p>

These are the pollution hotspots. The pulsing green colour in South America represents the absorption of carbon dioxide by Amazon rainforests during daylight hours.</p>

<p>"New computer modelling techniques in NASA's Global Modeling and Assimilation Office allow us to dissect our atmosphere and understand some of the major contributors to this runaway insulator," says NASA in the blog post.</p>

New NASA videos show shocking visualisation of global carbon emissions

<p>After the installation of a major software update that enabled NASA's Curiosity Mars rover to drive faster and also reduced wear and tear on its wheels, the robot took stunning captures of the “Marker Band Valley” before leaving it behind.</p>

<p>The postcard, showcasing the picturesque landscape from the red planet, is an artistic representation of what Mars looks like at different times of the day.</p>

<p>In a news release, NASA said that the panoramas captured by the robot were taken with black-and-white navigation cameras on April 8, 2023.</p>

<p>The colours were further added to the black-and-white panoramas with blue being added to the parts of the postcard clicked in the morning and yellow to the ones clicked in the afternoon.</p>

<p>Further giving details of the postcard, NASA said that it shows several landmarks of Mars including "Marker Band Valley," where the rover discovered unexpected signs of an ancient lake and also two hills named "Bolivar" and "Deepdale".</p>

<p>“Anyone who’s been to a national park knows the scene looks different in the morning than it does in the afternoon,” said Curiosity engineer Doug Ellison of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, who planned and processed the images. “Capturing two times of the day provides dark shadows because the lighting is coming in from the left and the right, like you might have on a stage – but instead of stage lights, we’re relying on the Sun.”</p>

<p>NASA further noted that the rover took the photos during winter time and that the shadows during that time of the year are deeper and darker as the dust levels in the Martian atmosphere are at their lowest.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Mars' shadows get sharper and deeper when there's low dust and softer when there's lots of dust," Ellison said.</p>

<p>A new image of Mars is raising questions over its redness, and it looks like Mars isn't as red as we might have thought.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new mosaic of Mars has been released to mark 20 years since the launch of the European Space Agency (ESA)'s Mars Express, which is a spacecraft that has been orbiting the planet for two decades.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mars Express's High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC)'s data was used to create the mosaic. The image reveals the planet's colour and composition in spectacular detail... not so red.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On its website, ESA said that Mars appears in the night sky different from all the other gleaming dots in the darkness. Notably, the changing atmosphere of Mars has made it difficult to see all the colours on the planet from space in the past.&nbsp;</p>

Notably, Cassini started exploring Saturn and its rings and moons in 2004, it was burned up in the planet's atmosphere when its mission ended in 2017.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Enceladus is the sixth-largest moon of Saturn and is mostly covered by fresh, clean ice, which makes it one of the most reflective bodies of the solar system.&nbsp;The outer surface is said to be wrapped in an ice crust, but the inner one is an ocean. Some scientists have claimed that the ocean could be a home for alien life making the moon most likely hope for finding nearby extraterrestrial life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA said that Cassini flew through the plume and E ring numerous times and scientists found that Enceladus' ice grains contain a rich array of minerals and organic compounds linked to life as we know it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Christopher Glein of the Southwest Research Institute, one of the paper's co-authors, said: "This is a stunning discovery for astrobiology. We have found abundant phosphorus in plume ice samples spraying out of the subsurface ocean."&nbsp;</p>

‘Stunning discovery’ says life possible on Saturn’s moon. Hunt for extraterrestrials gets major boost

<p>A team at the US Geological Survey's (USGS) Astrogeology Science Centre generated a map of planet Mars using the treasure trove of data which was collected by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The newly-generated map of Mars will make viewing the Martian landscape more easier than before, allowing people to navigate through it even on their smartphones.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new map, which has been compiled with the help of cloud computing and supercomputers, will be providing people with a high-resolution, three-dimensional experience of the otherworldly terrain of planet Mars.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Map contains 4,800 digital terrain models, 155,000 images</strong></h2>

<p>A team at the US Geological Survey's (USGS) Astrogeology Science Centre processed the map which consists of around 4,800 digital terrain models (DTMs) and has more than 155,000 images of the red Martian surface.</p>

<p>"Now anyone on the planet with a smartphone can search, use and marvel at these data," stated team leader Jay Laura, of the Astrogeology Science Centre (ASC), in a statement.</p>

<p>The team has used the data on Martian topography collected by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's (MRO) Context Camera. The MRO Context Camera can capture images with a resolution of around six&nbsp;metres&nbsp;per pixel and can cover an area of around 18.5 miles (30 kilometres) wide and 100 miles (160 km) long.</p>

<p>The team then produced the DTMs by overlapping two images of a similar area, which were then processed using a supercomputer to create a detailed 3D view.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The process is similar to how visual data collected by both our eyes is processed by the brain to generate our sense of depth perception and create a 3D picture of our surroundings," team members stated. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking about the data used to create maps, Laura said, "These data are ripe for discovery and use by machines and humans. This data release means that the HiRISE data set can now be seamlessly leveraged by machine-learning scientists."</p>

Martian landscape on smartphone? New map of Mars created from data collected by NASA

In a statement issued last Thursday (June 8),&nbsp;NASA said, "When scientists detected the gamma-ray burst known as GRB 221009A on Oct. 9, 2022, they dubbed it the brightest of all time, or BOAT." Citing follow-up studies, NASA said the GRB 221009A is 70 times brighter and far more energetic than the previous record holder.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While scientists don’t yet understand why, they received a tantalizing clue from NASA’s NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array) observatory. According to a study published in the journal Science Advances, scientists used NuSTAR observations of the event to show how the collapsing star ejected a jet of material that had a shape not previously observed among gamma-ray burst jets, as well as other unique characteristics.</p>

<p>The source of these distinctions may be the progenitor star, the study said, adding it is also possible that an entirely different mechanism launches the very brightest jets into space.</p>

<h2><strong>'Event so much brighter than any gamma-ray&nbsp;burst'</strong></h2>

<p>Brendan O’Connor, the lead author of the study said the October 9, 2022 event was so much brighter and more energetic than any gamma-ray burst seen before. “Then, when we analyzed the NuSTAR data, we realized that it also has this unique jet structure. And that was really exciting because we have no way of studying the star that produced this event; it’s gone now. But we now have some data giving us clues about how it exploded,” O'Connor, an astronomer at George Washington University, added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What are gamma rays?</strong></h2>

<p>Gamma rays are high-energy photons that are produced by some of the most violent events in the universe. They are the most energetic form of light in the universe yet invisible to the human eye. All known gamma-ray bursts have originated in galaxies outside our Milky Way but are bright enough to be spotted billions of light-years away, as per NASA.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Some blink into existence and last less than two seconds, while so-called long gamma-ray bursts typically radiate gamma rays for a minute or more. These objects can radiate other wavelengths for weeks," the American space agency added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Details about the GRB 221009A</strong></h2>

<p>NASA said in the statement that the GRB 221009A- a long gamma-ray burst- was so bright that it effectively blinded most gamma-ray instruments in space. American scientists were able to reconstruct the event with data from NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope to determine its actual brightness.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Similar to other gamma-ray bursts, GRB 221009A had a jet that erupted from the collapsing star like it was shot into space from a fire hose, with gamma rays radiating from the hot gas and particles at the jet’s core," the statement said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, GRB 221009A's jet stood out in a few ways. NASA said that in just about every previously observed gamma-ray burst, the jet remained remarkably compact and there was little to no stray light or material outside the narrow beam. The jet had a narrow core with wider, sloping sides.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The jet from the BOAT was unique in one important way- the energy of the material in GRB 221009A also varied, meaning that instead of all the material in the jet having the same energy, the energy of the material changed with distance from the jet’s core, NASA further said and highlighted this had never been observed in a long gamma-ray burst jet earlier.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Hubble space telescope has now clicked a beautiful galaxy, a 'jellyfish' galaxy. It is, like any other galaxy, a huge light-year-spanning, star-forming, behemoth. But when looked upon from our home planet, it looks like a cute jellyfish swirling around in nothingness of space.</p>

<p>The image has been posted by NASA on its 'nasahubble' Instagram page.</p>

<p>The 'jellyfish' galaxy is actually named J0206. It is a whopping 700 million lightyears away from Earth and is located in the Aquarius constellation. The tentacles of this galaxy are long tendrils that are following the galaxy's star-forming disc.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Galaxies in galaxy clusters are separated by an 'intra-cluster medium'. This medium is superheated plasma. As galaxies move through this intra-cluster medium, the plasma strips gas away from the galaxy forming the long 'tentacles' as we see in the image.</p>

The tentacles of this galaxy are long tendrils that are following the galaxy's star-forming disc. Galaxies in galaxy clusters are separated by an 'intra-cluster medium'. This medium is superheated plasma. As galaxies move through this intra-cluster medium, the plasma strips gas away from the galaxy forming the long 'tentacles' as we see in the image.
