According to the experts, sonification will particularly help those with impaired vision as they will be able to appreciate the strange beauty of nebulae and galaxies in the universe.

Scientists have proposed a reset of the lunar clock after re-evaluating impact craters on the moon's surface, indicating that certain features, such as the iconic "Man in the Moon" formation, could be 200 million years older than previously believed.

How would this clock reset impact everything we know about the moon?

As per a report in Space.com, the new dating system has implications on humanity’s understanding of the evolution of the lunar surface. It will also shed light on the early history of the solar system, that is characterised by heavenly bodies like the moon and Earth being subjected to intense bombardment by space rocks.

The research involved a reassessment of two methods of dating the lunar surface: counting the number of impact craters caused by space rocks and analysing moon rocks collected by the Apollo missions.

While traditionally, these methods have yielded different results, particularly for the ages of heavily cratered and mountainous lunar highlands, to “reconcile” the differences, the researchers correlated individually dated Apollo samples with the number of craters in their respective areas.

Professor Stephanie Werner of the University of Oslo explained their methodology during a talk at the Goldschmidt Geochemistry Conference in Lyon.

As per Werney, "It was decided that we had to reconcile these differences, and that meant correlating individually dated Apollo samples to the number of craters in the sample site surrounding area — in effect, resetting the crater clock."

"We also correlated them against spectroscopy data from various moon missions, especially the Indian Chandrayaan-1, to be sure which Apollo sample belongs to the surface in which we counted craters," she added.

The study was presented at the Goldschmidt Conference in Lyon, France, and has been accepted for publication in the Planetary Science Journal.

What will be affected by this clock reset?

As per the team, this reset will not change the estimate of the moon’s age — around 4.53 billion years. However, it does change the age of all the areas of the lunar surface, and not in a uniform manner. This will mean that the older regions experience the most significant shifts in age.

For instance, the Imbrium Basin, created by a massive asteroid impact, was previously estimated to be around 3.9 billion years old. The revised dating places the impact and the basin's formation approximately 4.1 billion years ago.

NASA's Perseverance rover's new findings have suggested that organic molecules, which are considered as a potential indicator of life, are present in great volume and diversity in the rocks at a locale on Mars, where there was the existence of a lake long ago.

The latest evidence was collected using an instrument called SHERLOC which is mounted on the robotic arm of the six-wheeled rover that enables to carry out the analysis of organic molecules and detailed mapping. Researchers have been reporting about the findings of SHERLOC from 10 places on two geological formations on the Jezero crater's floor.
The researchers collected evidence which indicated organic molecules' presence in multiple rock samples, including a few collected which are likely to return to Earth for future analysis. The researchers stated that the discovery of evidence of such organic molecules does not prove about the existence of life in the past or present on Mars, and added that non-biological processes appear as a more likely explanation.

According to new research, the colour of the Earth's oceans is changing because of climate breakdown. The report suggests that the deep blue sea is actually turning greener over time and added that climate change is also affecting areas in the low latitudes near the equator.

“The reason we care about this is not because we care about the colour, but because the colour is a reflection of the changes in the state of the ecosystem,” stated BB Cael, a scientist at the National Oceanography Centre at the University of Southampton and author of the study which was published in Nature.

Earlier research has focused on the changes in the ocean's greenness, using the verdant chlorophyll present in its plankton, to know more about the impacts of climate change. However, the team led by Cael has studied the observations recorded by NASA's Modis-Aqua satellite which is an exhaustive data repository and searched for patterns of change in the colours of the ocean using a fuller colour spectrum, which included red and blue.

By studying the colour changes, scientists can provide clarity over changes in plankton populations across the world. Phytoplankton is important for ocean ecosystems because it remains at the base of many of its food chains.

“We do have changes in the colour that are significantly emerging in almost all of the ocean of the tropics or subtropics,” stated Cael. The changes have been noted in more than 56 per cent of the oceans across the world, which is an area more than all of the land spread on the globe.

In many areas there’s a clear “greening effect”, stated Cael, however, he added that there are also water bodies where the blue or red colourings are falling or rising.

“These are not ultra, massive ecosystem-destroying changes, they may be subtle,” stated Cael. “But this gives us an additional piece of evidence that human activity is likely affecting large parts of the global biosphere in a way that we haven’t been able to understand," he added.

A researcher of ocean productivity at Oregon State University, Michael J Behrenfeld, said that the study extensively documents another consequence of changing climate. NASA marks one year of Webb telescope, posts picture of stars being born

James Webb Space Telescope of space agency NASA has discovered the most distant supermassive black hole to date, which appears to be active, said the agency on Thursday.

The galaxy, which is called CEERS 1019, has lived for more than 570 million years after the big bang, and the black hole present in it is less massive compared to any other yet discovered in the early universe.

Meanwhile, 11 galaxies which existed when the universe had lived for only 470 to 675 million years have also been identified by the James Webb telescope, stated NASA.

The black hole found inside CEERS 1019 shares similarities with the one present at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy, which is 4.6 million times greater than the mass of the sun, NASA added. The newly-discovered black hole is also not as bright as the massive behemoths which have been detected previously.

NASA stated that the black hole, though smaller, existed so many years back that astronomers are finding it difficult to explain how it was formed after the universe began.

NASA's James Webb discovers most distant supermassive black hole to date

The James Webb Telescope captured a stunning image of Saturn's rings. According to a blog by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) dated June 30, the image was captured on June 25. "Saturn itself appears extremely dark at this infrared wavelength observed by the telescope, as methane gas absorbs almost all of the sunlight falling on the atmosphere. However, the icy rings stay relatively bright, leading to the unusual appearance of Saturn in the Webb image," the blog post said.

The image was taken as part of the Webb Guaranteed Time Observation program 1247- which included very deep exposures of Saturn, which were designed to test the telescope’s capacity to detect faint moons around the planet and its bright rings.

What does the image reveal?

As per the blog post, the image revealed details within Saturn's ring system along with several of the planet’s moons – Dione, Enceladus, and Tethys. The additional deeper exposures would allow NASA to investigate Saturn's fainter rings- including the G ring and the E ring.

NASA says the rings surrounding Saturn are mostly broad, with a few singular narrow gaps between the broader rings. There is an innermost, thicker ring, and next to it is a brighter, wider ring.

Travelling farther outward, there is a small dark gap before another thicker ring. In the thicker ring, there is a narrow faint band. There is then an outermost, faintest, thinnest ring, the space agency adds.

The post further said that Saturn's atmosphere also showed surprising and unexpected detail.

"Although the Cassini spacecraft observed the atmosphere at greater clarity, this is the first time that the planet’s atmosphere has been seen with this clarity at this particular wavelength (3.23 microns), which is unique to Webb," it added.

The large, dark, diffuse structures in the northern hemisphere do not follow the planet’s lines of latitude, so this image is lacking the familiar striped appearance that is typically seen from Saturn’s deeper atmospheric layers.

"The portion of Jezero Crater the rover and helicopter are currently exploring a lot of rugged terrains, which makes communications dropouts more likely," said Ingenuity team lead Josh Anderson, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, in a statement.

"The team’s goal is to keep Ingenuity ahead of Perseverance, which occasionally involves temporarily pushing beyond communication limits. We're excited to be back in communications range with Ingenuity and receive confirmation of Flight 52,” Anderson added.

The scientists were expecting a loss of communications because of the presence of a hill between Ingenuity and Perseverance, which works as a relay between the Earth and the drone.
Nonetheless, "this has been the longest we've gone without hearing from Ingenuity so far in the mission," said Joshua Anderson, Ingenuity team lead at JPL.

"Ingenuity is designed to take care of itself when communication gaps like this occur, but we all still had a sense of relief finally hearing back," he added.
The rotorcraft, since then, has been deployed many times and act as an aerial scout in assisting the Perseverance rover in looking for signs of ancient microbial life from billions of years ago when the red planet was comparatively much wetter and warmer than today. ALSO READ | A hint of life in universe? NASA makes breakthrough discovery of carbon molecule in space On April 26, Ingenuity's 52nd flight was launched, however, the contact was lost by mission controllers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California as the rotorcraft descended to the surface after its two minute, 1,191-foot (363-metre) hop. Hill breaks the communication The scientists were expecting a loss of communications because of the presence of a hill between Ingenuity and Perseverance, which works as a relay between the Earth and the drone. Nonetheless, "this has been the longest we've gone without hearing from Ingenuity so far in the mission," said Joshua Anderson, Ingenuity team lead at JPL. WATCH | Why is NASA eyeing lunar mining trials within the next decade? "Ingenuity is designed to take care of itself when communication gaps like this occur, but we all still had a sense of relief finally hearing back," he added. So far, the data received indicates that the helicopter is in good shape. If everything is normal in further health checks, Ingenuity will be geared up for its next flight westwards and will head to a rocky outcrop which the Perseverance team will be exploring. This is not the first time that Ingenuity has gone through downed communications. An ancient river delta was being scoured by the helicopter when it went missing for around six days in April, "an agonisingly long time," wrote chief engineer Travis Brown in a blog post. NASA's search for life on the moon is reaching new heights. From probing water & oxygen on the lunar surface. To locating iron & rare earth metals. NASA is looking to develop resources on the moon. According to a scientist, NASA has already taken steps toward excavating moon soil in 2032.

Why is NASA eyeing lunar mining trials within the next decade?

India and the US are working on their most ambitious space venture yet. This was announced during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent state visit to the US. As part of the joint mission to the ISS, NASA will also provide advanced training to the Indian astronauts at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas. As of now, the international space station is populated by astronauts from the USA, Russia, Canada, Japan, and the European Union. In recent years, astronauts from Israel, Saudi Arabia, and UAE have also worked at the ISS. Soon, an Indian astronaut could join the ranks.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is looking to develop resources on the moon. This will initially include oxygen and water and eventually may expand to iron and rare earth. The US space agency has already taken steps towards excavating moon soil in 2032, said scientists on Wednesday (June 28).

As part of its Artemis mission, NASA is planning to return American astronauts to the moon by 2025. The crew would include a woman and a person of colour. The agency plans to learn from the moon mission in order to facilitate a trip to Mars.

An important part of the mission is advancing commercial opportunities in space. NASA is looking to quantify potential resources including energy, water and lunar soil as a goal to attract commercial investment, said Gerald Sanders, who is a rocket scientist at NASA.

He said that developing access to resources on the moon will be key to cutting costs and developing a circular economy.

"We are trying to invest in the exploration phase, understand the resources... to (lower) risk such that external investment makes sense that could lead to development and production," he told a mining conference in Brisbane.

"We are literally just scratching the surface," he said.

Test drill rig

At the end of the month, NASA will send a test drill rig to the moon. By 2032, it plans a larger-scale excavation of moon soil and a pilot processing plant.

It is expected that the first customers would be commercial rocket companies. These would use the moon's resources for fuel or oxygen.

Samuel Webster, an assistant director at the agency said that the Australian Space Agency is involved in making a semi-autonomous rover which will take samples of the lunar soil during a NASA mission as early as 2026.

The rover will demonstrate how the lunar soil will be collected, the soil that contains oxygen in form of oxides.

Using separate equipment sent to the moon with the rover, NASA will aim to extract that oxygen, he said.

"This ... is a key step towards establishing a sustainable human presence on the moon, as well (as) supporting future missions to Mars," he said at the conference.

A hint of life in universe? NASA makes breakthrough discovery of carbon molecule in space

In a first, a ChatGPT-style interface is being developed by the engineers working in NASA which can ultimately make spacecraft talk to their astronauts and help mission controllers hold conversations with artificial intelligence-powered robots, which are exploring moons and distant planets, according to an exclusive report published by The Guardian.

As per the plan, an early incarnation of the AI will soon be deployed on Lunar Gateway, which is NASA's planned extraterrestrial space station and part of the Artemis programme, as per the engineer developing the technology.

“The idea is to get to a point where we have conversational interactions with space vehicles and they [are] also talking back to us on alerts, interesting findings they see in the solar system and beyond,” said Dr Larissa Suzuki, a visiting researcher at NASA, while speaking to The Guardian. “It’s really not like science fiction any more,” she added.

Interplanetary communications network with inbuilt AI

While addressing a meeting being held on next-generation space communication at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in London, Suzuki emphasised interplanetary communications network which will have inbuilt AI to detect, and also fix glitches and inefficiencies as and when they occur.

“It then alerts mission operators that there is a likelihood that package transmissions from space vehicle X will be lost or will fail delivery. We cannot send an engineer up in space whenever a space vehicle goes offline or its software breaks somehow,” she said.

A natural language interface will also be inbuilt in the system which will allow mission control and astronauts to talk to it and will save them from scouring technical manuals for finding relevant information. Suzuki expressed hope that astronauts will in future be able to seek advice on how to perform complex manoeuvres or space experiments.

She added that she has been investigating how machine learning could be deployed in space and if it is possible or not to run large amounts of data through supercomputers. Suzuki added that an approach like federated learning can allow a fleet of robotic rovers, which are searching for water or specific minerals on a distant planet, to provide relevant information back to Earth without beaming large amounts of the data.

“The spacecraft do collaborative updates based on what’s seen by other spacecraft. It’s a technique to do distributed learning – to learn in a collaborative way without … bringing all that data to the ground,” she stated.

ALSO READ | NASA terms 'UFO sighting' in Las Vegas a 'bright meteor', but cops hope to trace aliens Interplanetary communications network with inbuilt AI While addressing a meeting being held on next-generation space communication at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in London, Suzuki emphasised interplanetary communications network which will have inbuilt AI to detect, and also fix glitches and inefficiencies as and when they occur. WATCH | NASA video shows carbon emissions on earth She added that she has been investigating how machine learning could be deployed in space and if it is possible or not to run large amounts of data through supercomputers. NASA working towards making spacecrafts talk to astronauts: Report

As Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's maiden state visit to the USA is underway in full swing, there are multiple reports about India and the US furthering cooperation in the space domain. Reports quoting White House sources claimed that Indian Space Agency ISRO and American Space Agency NASA have agreed to a joint mission to the International Space Station in 2024. However, there is no official word on such agreements.

Speaking to WION, NISAR Project Scientist Dr. Paul Rosen from NASA-JPL had said that the launch is likely to take place in early-2024.

For more than 10 years, scientists from both nations have been working on the NISAR project and the satellite has even arrived in India's UR Rao Satellite Centre, in preparation for an early-2024 launch. However, the reports on the NASA-ISRO joint mission to the Space station, if true, open up interesting possibilities and bring to the fore a lot of questions.

At the time of writing this report, neither the Indian government nor the American government has issued official statements regarding the NASA-ISRO mission to the Space station or India's signing of the Artemis Accords(a set of guidelines for space sustainable, safe space exploration in the 21st century). ISRO and NASA have also not issued any statements regarding the same.

Notably, even the ISRO Chief Dr. S. Somanath and the Minister of State in India's Department of Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh are not part of the delegation that has accompanied PM Modi. However, it must be kept in mind that the Prime Minister is also in-charge of the Department of Space, thereby making him the seniormost decision-making authority in the space domain.

Questions, possibilities that arise

India's space agency ISRO has been working on the country's ambitious indigenous Human Spaceflight programme known as Gaganyaan. ISRO Chairman, Dr. S. Somanath recently told WION that the Indian Astronaut candidates (crew of Indian Air Force Pilots) have completed the first round of training abroad, completed simulator training in India and are now undergoing theoretical training. He added that the maiden unmanned mission of Gaganyaan would be carried out in early-2024 and the astronaut mission would be attempted in late-2024 or early-2025. India's efforts towards Gaganyaan are being supported by Russia, US, Japan, France, European Union etc.

Gaganyaan is expected to be a three-day mission where a crew of Indian astronauts housed within a capsule (crew module) will be carried to space on an Indian rocket and brought back to earth. Once in earth orbit, the crew are expected to perform in-orbit experiments during their stay in space and then the crew module would de-orbit and splash down, off the Indian coast.

As India's astronauts gear up for the indigenous Gaganyaan mission, could the ISRO-NASA joint mission to the International Space Station(ISS) in 2024 be a precursor? One such mission to space can help in preparing the Indian crew for their own national mission and give them a feel of travelling to space, living in Low Earth orbit and working there.

While the ISS is originally a co-operative programme between US, Russia, Europe, Canada and Japan, astronauts from Israel, Saudi Arabia and UAE have flown to the ISS and worked there, as part of private missions. Such a possibility exists for Indian astronauts as well and they could join astronauts from other nations on the ride to the ISS, nestled within the Crew Dragon Capsule that sits atop a SpaceX Falcon9 rocket.

However, a $55 million or Rs.440 crore price tag awaits each passenger who wishes to travel to space on a private mission like the Saudi Astronauts did. This $55mn cost is said to cover the two-way transportation, 10-day orbital stay and a 15-week astronaut training programme.

ISRO officials have said on various occasions that India's Gaganyaan is not a one-off mission and will have several follow-on missions. As a nation with end-to-end space capability (ability to design, develop, build and launch rockets and satellites indigenously), India aspires to have a sustained human presence in space, possibly an Indian Space Station. Till the time that plan becomes a reality, ISRO-NASA missions to the ISS and similar efforts could provide a great wealth of learnings and experience for India's space science community and aid in developing India's own plans and resources towards sustained human presence in Low Earth Orbit.

India to team up with NASA for joint mission to ISS: Report

As the mystery of aliens deepened in Las Vegas after a UFO sighting was reported and extraterrestrial beings were claimed to have been seen by people, NASA has said that the UFO seen was nothing but a meteor.

The issue arose after the police department of Las Vegas received a call from a man who said that an object fell from the sky and claimed to have seen an eight-foot-tall alien standing in his backyard.

Green fireball just a bright meteor

Lindley Johnson, the planetary defence officer of the space agency, said that the green fireball spotted last month was most probably a bright meteor, which was less than a metre wide.

The startled resident of Las Vegas, while speaking to a 911 dispatcher, said, “It has big eyes and it’s looking at us." As per reports, the report appeared credible to the officers and they responded to the scene on May 1.

NASA's Juno spacecraft is a gift that keeps on giving. Looping around Jupiter - the largest planet in our solar system, Juno recently captured an incredible shot of the greenish glow from a lightning strike inside a swirling vortex near the planet's north pole.

The images released by NASA have been taken 19,900 miles (32,000 kilometres) above the planet's cloud top. The image is expected to help scientists better understand how massive storms and lightning and lightning-like events occur on the gas giant.

"Juno captured this view as Juno completed its 31st close flyby of Jupiter on Dec. 30, 2020. At the time the raw image was taken, Juno was about 19,900 miles (32,000 kilometres) above Jupiter’s cloud tops, at a latitude of about 78 degrees as it approached the planet," NASA said in a statement.

Unlike Earth where lightning bolts originate from water clouds and mostly occur near the equator, strikes on Jupiter emerge from the clouds made up of ammonia and water. They mostly occur near the poles of the planet.

Lightning has been observed on other gas planets of the solar system - Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Scientists have some evidence of lightning in the clouds of the planet Venus, however, it is still an issue of debate.

Various studies have detailed similarities in the lightning processes on Earth and Jupiter. For instance, lightning rates on both planets are similar although the distribution of lightning on the giant planet differs from that of Earth.

Juno's future endeavours

Juno, which has been roaming near Jupiter since 2016 has already completed more than 50 flybys and made close passes by three of the planet's largest moons.

The scientists associated with the spacecraft say they will be unearthing more fascinating discoveries in the coming months as the mission gets much closer to Jupiter's surface.

“Our upcoming flybys in July and October will bring us even closer, leading up to our twin flyby encounters with Io in December of this year and February of next year, when we fly within 1,500 kilometers of its surface,” Scott Bolton, Juno principal investigator was quoted as saying by CNN.

Notably, Juno's orbit around Jupiter is shifting closer over time, allowing scientists more opportunities to keep a close eye on the planet. The spacecraft is expected to go between some of Jupiter's rings as well which will help learn more about their origin and composition.

WATCH | Gravitas: "Juice" mission to study Jupiter's icy moons Juno's future endeavours Juno, which has been roaming near Jupiter since 2016 has already completed more than 50 flybys and made close passes by three of the planet's largest moons. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
