Data from NASA's insight lander has made a startling revelation that Mars' rotation is undergoing an acceleration of approximately 4 milliarcseconds per year. By studying the data scientists achieved the most precise measurement of mars' rotation to date and further research is likely to reveal more insights about the red planet.

Mars' timepiece tinkered? NASA discovers faster spin, shorter days on red planet

NASA's Voyager spacecraft is exploring the ever-expanding universe. The twin Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft are making their way through interstellar space. These spacecraft are, however, running low on energy. This raises a question: How much longer will it last?

How long will NASA's Voyager mission last?

NASA meanwhile has successfully averted a big problem as its Engineers had sent a wrong signal to Voyager 2 and lost contact for nearly about 10 days. But the US space agency has said that it has successfully reconnected its space probe after a brief scare of unexplored.

NASA succeeds in making contact with Voyager 2 after 10 days

Space agency NASA has been able to establish complete contact with Voyager 2 probe, which was lost a few days back, months before than expected.

The space agency had sent a wrong command to the spacecraft in July which changed its position and severed its contact. It was sent on an exploration of space in 1977.

On Tuesday, a signal was picked up, however, thanks to an "interstellar shout", which is a powerful instruction, its antenna was positioned back facing Earth.

Originally, NASA had pinned hopes on Voyager 2 probe resetting itself in October. The mission controllers took 37 hours to figure out if the interstellar command sent by them had worked since Voyager 2 was almost billions of miles away from Earth.

Staff used the "highest-power transmitter" to send signals to the spacecraft and timed it to be sent during "the best conditions" so that the antenna gets positioned as per the command, said Voyager project manager Suzanne Dodd to AFP.

After the probe lost the communications, it was not able to send back data to Nasa's Deep Space Network and receive commands. However, the space agency confirmed on August 4 that the data was received by the spacecraft and it was normally operating.

The space agency on Monday (July 31) said that its huge dish in Canberra, the capital of Australia, was making efforts to detect any stray signals from Voyager 2. This happened when NASA was able to hear the first faint "heartbeat" signal.

The area of Voyager 2 was being bombarded by the antenna with the correct command, hoping to establish contact somehow, said NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which looks after the Voyager missions.

The probe has been programmed for resetting its position multiple times every year to ensure that its antenna is pointing at Earth. The next reset will take place on October 15, on which NASA was resting its hopes if all other attempts had failed.

Race to build ISS successor: Voyager Space and Airbus strengthen partnership

The endeavour of sending human beings into the vast expanse of space is an unparalleled feat, fraught with challenges and dangers.

Over the span of just over six decades, space exploration has claimed the lives of 20 individuals. While this number might seem surprisingly low given the complexity of human spaceflight, NASA's ambitious plans to revisit the Moon by 2025 and set foot on Mars in the next decade, alongside the rise of commercial spaceflight, hint at an evolving landscape where the spectre of mortality looms, as reported by the Conversation.

Managing mortality in Earth's orbit and lunar proximity

In the event of a fatality during a low-Earth-orbit mission or on the moon, pragmatic solutions are in place. Swift return mechanisms, such as capsules or crew expeditions, ensure the body's return to Earth within hours or days. In these scenarios, the emphasis is on crew safety and operational protocols rather than body preservation.

Yet, the prospect of an astronaut's demise en route to Mars presents unique challenges. The vast distances and inability to pivot back towards Earth demand novel solutions. A deceased astronaut's body would likely journey back to Earth alongside the surviving crew after the mission's culmination, possibly years later. During this time, the body could be preserved within the spacecraft, leveraging controlled environmental conditions to slow decomposition.

Stepping into the void of space sans a protective spacesuit is a chilling demise. Instantaneous death would occur due to the vacuum's toll on breathing and the boiling of bodily fluids. Similar fates await those who venture unprotected onto the lifeless terrains of the Moon and Mars, their thin or nonexistent atmospheres condemning them to suffocation and the unsettling spectacle of boiling blood.

Confronting mortality on alien ground: Mars' surface

Suppose an astronaut met their end on Mars' surface. Traditional methods of disposal would be fraught with issues, such as energy-intensive cremation and contaminating burials. A pragmatic approach involves preserving the body within a specialised bag until its eventual return to Earth.

The challenge of handling death in space transcends mere logistical concerns. Supporting the grieving crew and families on Earth is as vital as managing the physical remains. Beyond the stars: What is NASA's protocol for astronauts who die in space?

Engineers sent a wrong signal to Voyager 2 and now the space probe is on its own at a distance of 20 billion kilometers at a speed of 56 000 kilometers per hour take a look at our next report as it explains the enduring Legacy of Voyager missions which surpass all records surpassing any other space mission in history in fact.

NASA re-connects with space probe after losing communication

Amidst fears that the Voyager 2 is lost forever, NASA, after days of nerve-wracking silence, has finally heard a "heartbeat signal" from the almost five-decades-old space probe.

Just two weeks back, flight controllers accidentally sent a wrong command that tilted the spacecraft's antenna away from the Earth and severed contact. This situation, as per the news agency AFP, was not expected to be resolved until the spacecraft conducted an automated re-orientation manoeuvre on October 15.

Everything can change in a "heartbeat"

As the space agency actively searched for any stray signals from Voyager 2, NASA's Deep Space Network, which is an international array of giant radio antennas, picked up a "heartbeat signal," that signals that the 46-year-old spacecraft is operating and is well, project manager Suzanne Dodd told AFP.

The last-ditch effort to establish contact "was successful in that we see the 'heartbeat' signal from the spacecraft," said Dodd, adding "So we know the spacecraft is alive and operating. This buoyed our spirits."

NASA briefly lost contact with the International Space Centre recently. But what made it lose contact? A power outage at NASA's mission control centre caused the ISS communications blackout. The outage lasted about 90 minutes.

How NASA lost contact with International Space Station for first time ever

As the 20th anniversary of Concorde's final flight approaches, the world of ultrafast air travel is poised to enter a new phase. It is poised on the verge of a revolution in aviation, with suborbital and supersonic technologies offering the potential to dramatically reduce global travel times, ushering in a new era of air travel.

Concorde, the first supersonic commercial airliner, was renowned for its remarkable speed, allowing passengers to travel from New York to London in under three hours. However, the high maintenance costs and a high-profile crash in 2000 eventually led to the end of Concorde era.

Son of Concorde and the future

Now, NASA's X-59, nicknamed "Son of Concorde" has caught the spotlight with its experimental supersonic aircraft.

The supersonic aircraft, as per a New York Post, may soon be ready for its first test flights, which can potentially reduce the New York to London journey time to about three and a half hours.

While smaller and slower than its predecessor, the X-59 can still reach speeds of 925 mph.

'Earth to Earth' flights

While impressive, X-59 is not "it". As per the report, even more, groundbreaking advancements are on the horizon.

According to recent research by Britain's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), a flight from London to Sydney, which currently takes 22 hours, could be reduced to just two hours by 2033.

The answer lies in suborbital "Earth to Earth" flights that use rockets to propel passengers up to 125 miles into space at speeds exceeding 3,500 mph. Using rockets similar to Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic jet programs, the craft then rapidly descends to the final destination, thereby significantly cutting journey times.

Aviation moguls, and visionaries like Elon Musk, are already investing in suborbital travel.

Musk's SpaceX's in 2020 revealed plans for its Starship rocket to transport 100 passengers between continents in less than an hour.

Not only this, recently Chinese company Space Transportation also announced that it intends to conduct suborbital testing with its reusable "rocket with wings," aiming for a test flight by 2024 and a crewed flight by 2025.

They estimate that their suborbital spacecraft called Tianxing I can potentially complete a 4,300-mile (6,920 kilometres) trip in about an hour.

Potential market and the risks

The potential market for suborbital flights is immense. As per Switzerland's UBS, if just 5 per cent of the 150 million annual flights lasting over 10 hours transitioned to point-to-point suborbital space travel, the market could exceed $20 billion per year.

UBS estimates that the total value of the subsonic market could reach $805 billion by 2030.

However, despite the prospects, suborbital flights face numerous challenges. Safety remains paramount, particularly given the higher risks associated with rocket propulsion fuels like the liquified natural gas used by Blue Origin, or the liquid oxygen and liquid methane used by Starship — which are more prone to exploding than typical aviation fuel.

Environmental concerns also surround rocket-propelled aircraft, reports New York Post, as their emissions are under little or no regulations.

Another major concern revolves around the impact of G-forces on the human body during launch and reentry. As per Dr Ryan Anderton, the medical lead of the Civil Aviation Authority's space team, While suborbital journeys will be relatively short, "the main challenge faced will be the exposure to G-forces on launch and reentry."

Talking to the post, he said: We know this can affect the flow of blood around the body and to the head and it can sometimes generate abnormal heart rhythms."

NASA's Hubble telescope spots stunning 'cloud of space rocks' made from asteroid-smashing DART mission

Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for space studies, has said that July is likely to be the hottest month the earth has experienced in hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

This announcement was made during a meeting at NASA's Washington headquarters, which brought together agency climate experts, NASA's administrator Bill Nelson, and senior climate adviser Kate Calvin.

As the climate crisis unfolds, a persistent heatwave has scorched parts of the US south, and extreme weather events, such as deadly floods and Canadian wildfire smoke, have underscored the urgent need for climate action.

Unprecedented changes and rising temperatures

The global temperature analysis by NASA indicated that June was the hottest month on record. Schmidt emphasised that the observed changes, while shocking, are not surprising to scientists.

Over the past four decades, temperatures have shown a continuous increase, leading to unprecedented changes worldwide, as reported by the Guardian.

2023 on track to be hottest year on record

Schmidt's calculations suggest that earth has a 50 per cent chance of setting a new temperature record in 2023, while other models project an 80 per cent chance..

Scientists anticipate that 2024 will be even hotter due to the El Niño weather pattern, which has a tendency to boost global temperatures and may peak toward the end of this year.

The last significant El Niño event from 2014 to 2016 resulted in successive global temperature records, with 2016 becoming the hottest year on record.

Climate crisis and greenhouse gas emissions

During the meeting, experts raised alarm about the changes earth is experiencing and emphasised that they are directly linked to greenhouse-gas emissions.

While not explicitly naming fossil fuels as the major source of these emissions, they stressed that human activity, particularly greenhouse gas emissions, is unequivocally responsible for the warming seen across the planet.

The consequences of this warming are being felt by people and ecosystems worldwide.

NASA's climate initiatives

NASA's agency leaders showcased various climate-focused initiatives aimed at helping governments mitigate the climate crisis and prepare for its impacts. Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for space studies, has said that July is likely to be the hottest month the earth has experienced in hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

Unprecedented changes and rising temperatures The global temperature analysis by NASA indicated that June was the hottest month on record. Schmidt emphasised that the observed changes, while shocking, are not surprising to scientists. Over the past four decades, temperatures have shown a continuous increase, leading to unprecedented changes worldwide, as reported by the Guardian. 2023 on track to be hottest year on record Schmidt's calculations suggest that earth has a 50 per cent chance of setting a new temperature record in 2023, while other models project an 80 per cent chance.. Also read | Extreme heat roils Europe: Workers warn of strike in Italy and stoppages in Greece Climate crisis and greenhouse gas emissions During the meeting, experts raised alarm about the changes earth is experiencing and emphasised that they are directly linked to greenhouse-gas emissions. While not explicitly naming fossil fuels as the major source of these emissions, they stressed that human activity, particularly greenhouse gas emissions, is unequivocally responsible for the warming seen across the planet. The consequences of this warming are being felt by people and ecosystems worldwide. NASA's climate initiatives NASA's agency leaders showcased various climate-focused initiatives aimed at helping governments mitigate the climate crisis and prepare for its impacts. These initiatives include the earth information centre, which provides real-time climate data from NASA's 25 satellites. Additionally, NASA is actively tracking environmental changes, air pollution, methane emissions, and tropical cyclones and hurricanes. The agency is also conducting research to reduce planet-warming pollution, such as exploring lower-carbon forms of air travel. Also watch | How El Nino is helping drive heatwaves and extreme weather?
