“This is the first measurement of the number of rogue planets in the galaxy that is sensitive to planets less massive than Earth,” he added.<br />

The findings of the team stem from a nine-year survey called MOA (Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics) which has been conducted at the Mount John University Observatory in New Zealand.<br />

“Microlensing is the only way we can find objects like low-mass free-floating planets and even primordial black holes,” stated Takahiro Sumi, Osaka University's professor, and lead author of the paper. “It’s very exciting to use gravity to discover objects we could never hope to see directly,” he added.</p>

<h2><strong>Pint-sized planets</strong></h2>

<p>NASA, in a few decades, has discovered the worlds in our solar system as well as the 5,300 planets outside our solar system. A majority of these newfound worlds are either extremely close to their host star or huge in size, or both.</p>

<p>The results achieved by the team, meanwhile, suggested that rogue planets are generally on the petite side. “We found that Earth-size rogues are more common than more massive ones,” said Sumi said. “The difference in star-bound and free-floating planets’ average masses holds a key to understanding planetary formation mechanisms,” he added.</p>

<h2><strong>Hunt for hidden worlds</strong></h2>

<p>Roman telescope, once launched in May 2027, will reveal solitary planets through microlensing which is extraordinarily rare.<br />

“Roman will be sensitive to even lower-mass rogue planets since it will observe from space,” stated Naoki Koshimoto, who led the paper. “The combination of Roman’s wide view and sharp vision will allow us to study the objects it finds in more detail than we can do using only ground-based telescopes, which is a thrilling prospect,” he added.</p>

<p>According to reports, the DRACO engine would consist of a nuclear reactor, which will be designed and built by&nbsp;BWX Technologies, a company based in Lynchburg, Virginia. The reactor would heat hydrogen from minus&nbsp;420 degrees Fahrenheit to a toasty 4,400 degrees, with the hot gas shooting from a nozzle to generate thrust.</p>

<p>According to recent research by Britain's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), a flight from London to Sydney, which currently takes 22 hours, could be reduced to just two hours by 2033.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The answer lies in suborbital "Earth to Earth" flights that use rockets to propel passengers up to 125 miles into space at speeds exceeding 3,500 mph. Using rockets similar to Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic jet programs, the craft then rapidly descends to the final destination, thereby significantly cutting journey times.</p>

<p>Aviation moguls, and visionaries like Elon Musk, are already investing in suborbital travel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Musk's SpaceX's in 2020 revealed plans for its Starship rocket to transport 100 passengers between continents in less than an hour.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, despite the prospects, suborbital flights face numerous challenges. <p>In a report by The Associated Press, the space station programme manager Joel Montalbano said that there was no danger to the astronauts or the station. He said that backup control systems took over to restore normal communications within 90 minutes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), a 600-kilogram spacecraft smashed Dimorphos, which circles around a bigger asteroid called Didymos. The asteroid was smashed to understand if the orbit of the space rock can be altered as a practice run to divert future dangerous asteroids. The mission to smash the asteroid was a success which decreased the length of Dimorphos’s orbit by around 33 minutes after the impact in September 2022.</p>

The team discovered 37 large boulders, which will range from 1 to almost 7 metres across, and appeared like small sparkles of light in the picture shared.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Hera spacecraft to study cloud of boulders</strong></h2>

<p>It is most likely that these rocks were tied loosely to the surface of Dimorphous, and not the shards released from the body of the asteroid itself. These clouds are moving relatively slowly compared to Dimorphous, at a speed of 0.8 kilometres per hour, and the total mass of the rock is around 0.1 per cent of their parent asteroid.</p>

Symphony of stars: NASA captures sound of space with the help of sonification

<p>In a remarkable display of science and engineering, the Mars Express orbiter has clicked remarkable pictures across a gulf of some 300 million kilometres. At first glance, the view might not look like much, just a fuzzy, out-of-focus image. But, it is the Earth and the Moon captured from a distance of roughly 186.4 million miles and a reminder of our collective duty to preserve the "pale blue dot."</p>

<h2><strong>A blob and another blob</strong></h2>

<p>The sequence of four images showcases a fuzzy grey scene with a white blob representing the Sun and a fainter, smaller blob depicting Earth and the Moon as they move across the sky.</p>

<p>These images, as per Science Alert, were captured by the super-resolution channel of Mars Express's High-Resolution Stereo Camera on 15, 21, and 27 May, and 2 June 2023 and were taken to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Mars Express.</p>

<p>Astronomer Jorge Hernández Bernal of the University of the Basque Country and Sorbonne University emphasised the relevance of these images in the context of the worsening climate and ecological crisis. He said that they "wanted to bring Carl Sagan's reflections back to the present day, in which the worsening climate and ecological crisis make them more valid than ever."</p>

<p>"In these simple snapshots from Mars Express, Earth has the equivalent size as an ant seen from a distance of 100 metres, and we are all in there. Even though we have seen images like these before, it is still humbling to pause and think: we need to look after the pale blue dot, there is no planet B."</p>

<p>Scientists have proposed a reset of the lunar clock after re-evaluating impact craters on the moon's surface, indicating that certain features, such as the iconic "Man in the Moon" formation, could be 200 million years older than previously believed.</p>

<h2><strong>How would this clock reset impact everything we know about the moon?</strong></h2>

<p>As per a report in Space.com, the new dating system has implications on humanity’s understanding of the evolution of the lunar surface. It will also shed light on the early history of the solar system, that is characterised by heavenly bodies like the moon and Earth being subjected to intense bombardment by space rocks.</p>

<p>The research involved a reassessment of two methods of dating the lunar surface: counting the number of impact craters caused by space rocks and analysing moon rocks collected by the Apollo missions.</p>

<p>While traditionally, these methods have yielded different results, particularly for the ages of heavily cratered and mountainous lunar highlands, to “reconcile” the differences, the researchers correlated individually dated Apollo samples with the number of craters in their respective areas.</p>

<p>Professor Stephanie Werner of the University of Oslo explained their methodology during a talk at the Goldschmidt Geochemistry Conference in Lyon.</p>

<p>As per Werney, "It was decided that we had to reconcile these differences, and that meant correlating individually dated Apollo samples to the number of craters in the sample site surrounding area — in effect, resetting the crater clock."</p>

<p>"We also correlated them against spectroscopy data from various moon missions, especially the Indian Chandrayaan-1, to be sure which Apollo sample belongs to the surface in which we counted craters," she added.</p>

<p>The study was presented at the Goldschmidt Conference in Lyon, France, and has been accepted for publication in the Planetary Science Journal.</p>

<h2><strong>What will be affected by this clock reset?</strong></h2>

<p>As per the team, this reset will not change the estimate of the moon’s age — around 4.53 billion years. However, it does change the age of all the areas of the lunar surface, and not in a uniform manner. This will mean that the older regions experience the most significant shifts in age.</p>

<p>For instance, the Imbrium Basin, created by a massive asteroid impact, was previously estimated to be around 3.9 billion years old. The revised dating places the impact and the basin's formation approximately 4.1 billion years ago.</p>

<p>However, unlike Moon, the Earth, has a masked impact record due to geological processes like tectonic plate movement.</p>

<p>Thankfully, the moon's geologically inactive nature has preserved the record of impacts on its surface, which makes it an invaluable source for studying the effects of space rock bombardment minus the influence of geological churning.</p>

<p>NASA's Perseverance rover's new findings have suggested that organic molecules, which are considered as a potential indicator of life, are present in great volume and diversity in the rocks at a locale on Mars, where there was the existence of a lake long ago.<br />

The latest evidence was collected using an instrument called SHERLOC which is mounted on the robotic arm of the six-wheeled rover that enables to carry out the analysis of organic molecules and detailed mapping. Researchers have been reporting about the findings of SHERLOC from 10 places on two geological formations on the Jezero crater's floor.<br />

The researchers collected evidence which indicated organic molecules' presence in multiple rock samples, including a few collected which are likely to return to Earth for future analysis. The researchers stated that the discovery of evidence of such organic molecules does not prove about the existence of life in the past or present on Mars, and added that non-biological processes appear as a more likely explanation.</p>

<p>"Organics are the molecular building blocks of life as we know it, but can also be formed from geological processes not directly related to life. We see multiple signals that appear to vary across the formations of the crater floor and in the minerals they are associated with," stated astrobiologist Sunanda Sharma of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, who was also the research's lead author which was published this week in the journal Nature.<br />

Perseverance landed on the Martian surface at Jezero Crater in February 2021 with a mission to look for evidence of ancient life on Mars and collect samples of soil and rock which can be brought back to the Earth. Jezero Crater is an area located in the northern hemisphere of the planet which was once flooded with water and was home to an ancient lake basin.</p>

<h2><strong>Is Mars a hospitable place?</strong></h2>

<p>Mars was not always as inhospitable as it is today, as liquid water was once present on its surface years ago. Scientists have hinted at the existence of microbial life in the Jezero Crater. They claim that river channels spilt over the crater wall and a lake was created more than 3.5 billion years ago.<br />

The researchers were able to detect signals of organic molecules at all 10 places that were studied by SHERLOC (short for Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals) on the crater floor. The rocks were created igneous – volcanically.</p>

<p>According to new research, the colour of the Earth's oceans is changing because of climate breakdown. The report suggests that the deep blue sea is actually turning greener over time and added that climate change is also affecting areas in the low latitudes near the equator.</p>

<p>“The reason we care about this is not because we care about the colour, but because the colour is a reflection of the changes in the state of the ecosystem,” stated BB Cael, a scientist at the National Oceanography Centre at the University of Southampton and author of the study which was published in Nature.</p>

<p>Earlier research has focused on the changes in the ocean's greenness, using the verdant chlorophyll present in its plankton, to know more about the impacts of climate change. However, the team led by Cael has studied the observations recorded by NASA's Modis-Aqua satellite which is an exhaustive data repository and searched for patterns of change in the colours of the ocean using a fuller colour spectrum, which included red and blue.</p>

<p>By studying the colour changes, scientists can provide clarity over changes in plankton populations across the world. Phytoplankton is important for ocean ecosystems because it remains at the base of many of its food chains.</p>

<p>“We do have changes in the colour that are significantly emerging in almost all of the ocean of the tropics or subtropics,” stated Cael. The changes have been noted in more than 56 per cent of the oceans across the world, which is an area more than all of the land spread on the globe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In many areas there’s a clear “greening effect”, &nbsp;stated Cael, however, he added that there are also water bodies where the blue or red colourings are falling or rising.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“These are not ultra, massive ecosystem-destroying changes, they may be subtle,” stated Cael. “But this gives us an additional piece of evidence that human activity is likely affecting large parts of the global biosphere in a way that we haven’t been able to understand," he added.&nbsp;</p>

However, it remains unclear how strong these changes are and what exactly is taking place inside the ocean which is causing them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Most likely, the measured trends are associated with multiple factors changing in parallel. With answers to these questions, we can then begin understanding what the ecological and biogeochemical implications are,” stated Behrenfeld.</p>

<p>An advanced satellite mission called Pace (plankton, aerosol, cloud, ocean ecosystem) will be launched by NASA in January 204 which will measure hundreds of colours in the ocean. “Making more meaningful inferences about what the changes actually are ecologically is definitely a big next step,” stated Cael.</p>
