Two men accused of trying to "bewitch" the president of Zambia have been arrested. The police said they had in their custody the "witchdoctors" who had been assigned the work "to use charms to harm" President Hakainde Hichilema. Jasten Mabulesse Candunde and Leonard Phiri were held in the capital, Lusaka.
Witchcraft is prevalent in the southern African country and people often fear the worst owing to it. Police said that Nelson Banda, the younger brother of MP Emmanuel "Jay Jay" Banda hired Candunde and Phiri.
Banda was reportedly arrested last month in Zimbabwe over robbery charges. He has claimed innocence in the matter and has not been seen in public since then. Earlier in August, while waiting for a court appearance, he is said to have escaped from custody. Emmanuel Banda has been an independent MP since 2021 and was previously associated with former President Edgar Lungu.

Lungu leads the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) party that previously alleged that the charges against Banda are politically motivated. Notably, Lungu lost the presidency to Hichilema that year.
The police said Candunde and Phiri were found in possession of "assorted charms", including a live chameleon. They have been charged under Zambia's Witchcraft Act with "possession of charms", "professing knowledge of witchcraft" and "cruelty to wild animals".
An official statement by the police states that the two had been promised more than two million Zambian kwacha ($73,000) to complete the "mission".
The two men are currently in police custody and will be presented in court soon, the police said. No official date has yet been issued for the same.

The body of a seven-year-old boy, missing since the collision between a tourist ferry and an Indian Navy boat off the Mumbai coast on 18 December, was recovered on Saturday (December 21) after a three-day search operation, officials told news agency PTI.
The boy, identified as Johan Mohammad Nisar Ahmed Pathan from Goa, had been aboard the ferry with his mother, who also lost her life in the incident.
A combined search-and-rescue mission involving naval boats, a helicopter, and Coast Guard vessels led to the recovery of Johan’s body.
With the recovery of his body the death toll in the Neel Kamal ferry collision has risen to 15. Of the 113 people on board the vessel, 15 have died, while 98 others, including two injured, were rescued.
The Navy craft involved in the collision had six crew members, of whom two survived, officials added.

On Thursday, the body of a 43-year-old man was also recovered as part of the ongoing operation.
The collision happened on 18 December when a Navy vessel undergoing engine trials lost control and hit the Neel Kamal ferry near Mumbai harbour.
The ferry, carrying more than 100 passengers, was travelling from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist spot known for its ancient caves.
Probe revealed that the ferry was licensed to carry only 84 passengers and six crew members but was overloaded, violating the Inland Vessel Act. Following the incident, the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) revoked the ferry’s license.
Colaba police have filed a case against the Navy craft’s operator under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for negligence, reckless navigation, and endangering public safety.
The Navy has launched its own internal inquiry into the collision, one of the most serious accidents in Mumbai’s harbour area. The Navy craft involved is currently in custody, authorities told PTI.

The teaser featured Corenswet as Man of Steel and his alter ego, Clark Kent, who is a reporter for the newspaper The Daily Planet.

Kapadia's film has earned a spot in former US President Obama's annual list of favourite movies. 
Taking to his X handle, Obama shared his list of favourite films, and the first spot was Kapadia's movie.

There are three states to the mind, which the modern sciences acknowledge - the conscious, the unconscious and the subconscious state. The fourth state, which modern science does not acknowledge, is the superconscious state or the turaiya state.

When you do dhyan practices like Sanatan Kriya as prescribed, over some time you can still the senses, and as a result, higher senses awaken.

Dhyan can only be done with a Guru as the purpose of Dhyan is to take you towards reality, and only someone who has the experience of reality can steer you there.

Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has landed in a controversy after an arrest warrant was issued against him. The warrant was issued after Centaurus Lifestyle Brands Pvt Ltd., of which Uthappa is the director, failed to deposit provident funds in excess of INR 20 lakh (2 million).
The clothing company is based out of Bengaluru and has INR 23,36,602 (approx 2.3 million) in dues to PF department. Uthappa has till 27 December to pay the dues or face arrest.

The outstanding amount is Rs 23,36,602, including Rs 6,550 towards recovery."
"You are kindly requested to execute the enclosed warrant of  arrest for Robin Uthappa, director of the establishment, through the station in charge under whose jurisdiction the employer resides," it further added.
The police, when arrived to deliver the order, found out that Uthappa has vacated the mentioned address.
"We received the letter from the PF office a week ago, requesting the execution of the arrest warrant. Uthappa previously lived in an apartment on Wheeler Road in Pulakeshinagar. Our staff visited the address and learned that he vacated the property a year ago and now resides in Dubai," read a report by news outlet Times of India, citing a police officer in the case.
As no formal complaint has been filed yet in the case so no FIR has been issued so far, the TOI further reported.

Former India batter Robin Uthappa faces arrest over unpaid Provident Fund dues

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja says that retirement of veteran off-spinner Ravi Ashwin is a 'golden opportunity for a youngster.' Ashwin retired from international cricket after the end of the third Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Series, which was held at Gabba in Brisbane on Wednesday (Dec 18). 
"We just hope that we get a better all-rounder and bowler than Ashwin. It's not like nobody can replace a player. Everyone goes, but you do get the replacement. We have to move on. In India, we always have good talents; it is not like anyone is irreplaceable. We will have to move on. It is a golden opportunity for any youngster to grab this opportunity," said Jadeja while talking to the reporters outside Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Saturday (Dec 21).

After the meeting, a statement from Syria's new leaders said they wanted to contribute to regional peace.
"The Syrian people stand at an equal distance from all countries and parties in the region... Syria rejects any polarisation," the statement said.
Leaf said she told Sharaa of the "critical need to ensure terrorist groups cannot pose a threat inside of Syria or externally, including to the US and our partners in the region."

The US delegation also included Roger Carstens, the US pointman on hostages. He said he worked on Friday with the new Syrian leadership to search a location where American journalist Austin Tice could have been held, and "we'll be working with the interim authorities" to examine other locations.
Tice was kidnapped in Syria in August 2012.
<h2>US strikes IS </h2>
On a regional tour prior to the Aqaba talks, Secretary of State Antony Blinken had stressed the need to prevent a resurgence of Islamic State group (IS) jihadists.
The US military said on Friday its forces had killed an IS leader and another operative in Deir Ezzor province, part of escalated US military action against the group since Assad's overthrow.
The US embassy said Leaf also met with Syria's White Helmet rescuers, civil society leaders, activists and others "to hear directly from them about their vision for the future of their country".
Below a photograph of Leaf and others with a memorial wreath, the embassy said she had also commemorated the tens of thousands of people murdered, tortured, disappeared or detained under Assad.
"The US commitment to hold accountable those responsible for these atrocities is unwavering," the embassy said on X.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who backed Assad's opponents, has stressed reconciliation and restoration of Syria's territorial integrity and unity.
Turkey has been putting pressure on Kurdish-led forces in Syria, and Erdogan said Friday it was time to destroy "terrorist" groups operating in the country, specifically IS and Kurdish fighters.

US scraps $10mn bounty on Syria’s new leader after talks in Syrian capital

A 27-year-old man, Alal Uddin, has been arrested in connection with the Polashkanda temple attack, reported Daily Star newspaper, citing Abul Khayer, Officer-in-Charge of Haluaghat Police Station.
Uddin reportedly confessed during interrogation and was subsequently remanded in custody.  
According to an ANI news agency report, another man, a 37-year-old male named Azharul, has been arrested "for vandalising Hindu idols in the Shakuair area."
<h2>Concerns for minorities in Bangladesh</h2>
These vandalism attacks are part of a broader pattern of violence targeting Hindus in Bangladesh.
Recently, India's junior foreign minister Kirti Vardhan Singh, in a written reply to a question in lower house of parliament Lok Sabha revealed that over 2,200 incidents were reported this year in Bangladesh.

Pentagon on Thursday (Dec 19) released its annual congressionally mandated report on China's military and security developments. The report talked about China's nuclear arsenal, its air force, its plan to expand its overseas footprint, and the pressure on Taiwan. 
The report said that China's military- which has been working to modernise itself for several decades- has made recent advances. However, its efforts to improve the armed forces have been hampered by corruption that led to the removal of top leaders.

&gt; The Pentagon also said that China was developing new intercontinental ballistic missiles that would significantly improve its nuclear-capable missile forces and require increased nuclear warhead production.
&gt; China is looking to expand its overseas infrastructure and logistics to "project and sustain military power at greater distances" beyond its base in Djibouti, the Pentagon said. 
&gt; The PLA (People's Liberation Army) has likely considered having military logistics facilities in countries from Myanmar, Pakistan and Bangladesh to Kenya and Nigeria, among others.

Reacting to the Pentagon's report, the Chinese foreign ministry urged Washington to stop issuing "irresponsible reports." 
"This US report, like previous similar reports, ignores facts, is full of bias, and spreads the China threat theory. It is just an excuse to maintain its military hegemony. China is determined to be a force for peace, stability, and progress in the world. At the same time, we also resolutely defend national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters.
“We urge the United States to abandon its Cold War mentality and hegemonic logic, look at China's strategic intentions and national defence construction objectively and rationally, stop publishing such irresponsible reports year after year, and take practical actions to maintain the stability of the relations between the two countries and the two militaries,” Lin added.

He further claimed that his wife and her parents started being aggressive towards him and asking him to leave the job in Bengaluru. “Along with my 73-year-old mother, I faced threats and abuse,” the man said.
He said his wife lodged a fake case against him in Delhi and Bengaluru.
The man claimed his wife earns ₹80,000 monthly but still demands big amounts in compensation. He even alleged that she and her family are not letting him meet his 10-month-old son. 
“Knowing that my son is my weakness, she began using him against me. Whenever I tried to video call to see my son, she refused, saying the child was asleep,” the man said in the post.

He further alleged that it's been 18 months since their marriage and for 13 months they have been living separately. Still, his wife has not filed for a divorce as she might not be able to get what she has been demanding in terms of money, he claimed.

To do this, senators dropped normal procedure to fast-track the package to a vote, halting government shutdown preparations and saving Christmas for more than 800,000 workers at risk of being sent home without pay.
Earlier the same day, the House of Representatives had passed the bill with just hours left before federal operations were set to grind to a halt. The measure was passed with rare bipartisan backing, managing to keep the lights on for a few more months.

Although Republicans control the House, their internal divisions forced them to rely on Democrats to avert a shutdown.
The bill, which extends government funding through mid-March, passed with the help of almost all Democrats, even as 34 from the Republican Party voted against it.

The bill, as per AFP news agency, includes $110 billion for disaster relief and agricultural aid but omits a contentious two-year suspension of the debt ceiling demanded by President-elect Donald Trump.

Yemen's Iranian-backed Huthi rebels have repeatedly launched missile attacks against Israel since the war in Gaza began more than a year ago, most of which have been intercepted.
In return, Israel has struck multiple targets in Yemen -- including ports and energy facilities in areas controlled by the Huthis.
"A short time ago, reports were received of a weapon falling in one of the settlements within the Tel Aviv district," Israeli police said Saturday.
According to Israeli media, the projectile fell in the town of Bnei Brak, east of Tel Aviv.
Israel's emergency medical service said 14 people had been injured.
"Additional teams are treating several people on-site who were injured while heading to protected areas, as well as those suffering from anxiety," a spokesman said.
The Huthi rebels say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians and last week pledged to continue operations "until the aggression on Gaza stops and the siege is lifted".
On December 9, a drone claimed by Houthis exploded on the top floor of a residential building in the central Israel city of Yavne, causing no casualties.

In July, a Huthi drone attack in Tel Aviv killed an Israeli civilian, prompting retaliatory strikes on the Yemeni port of Hodeidah.
The Huthis have also regularly targeted shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, leading to retaliatory strikes on Huthi targets by US and sometimes British forces. 
The rebels said Thursday that Israeli air strikes that day killed nine people, after the group fired a missile toward Israel, badly damaging a school.
While Israel has previously hit targets in Yemen, Thursday's were the first against the rebel-held capital Sanaa.
"The Israeli enemy targeted ports in Hodeida and power stations in Sanaa, and the Israeli aggression resulted in the martyrdom of nine civilian martyrs," rebel leader Abdul Malik al-Huthi said in a lengthy speech broadcast by the rebels' Al-Masira TV.
Israel said it struck the targets in Yemen after intercepting a missile fired from the country, a strike the rebels subsequently claimed.
Huthi spokesman Yahya Saree said they had fired ballistic missiles at "two specific and sensitive military targets... in the occupied Yaffa area", referring to the Jaffa region near Tel Aviv.

Berlin's international film festival will next year present Scottish actress Tilda Swinton with a lifetime achievement award, organisers said Friday.
The decision to give Swinton the Honorary Golden Bear prize was taken in recognition of her "breathtaking" range and status as "one of our modern filmmaking idols", Berlinale director Tricia Tuttle said in a statement.
"To cinema she brings so much humanity, compassion, intelligence, humour and style, and she expands our ideas of the world through her work," Tuttle said. 
The award will be presented at the festival's opening ceremony in the German capital on February 13.
The Berlinale, running February 13-23, ranks along with Cannes and Venice among Europe's top film festivals.
The 2025 edition of the festival will open with the premiere of "Das Licht" ("The Light") by German director Tom Tykwer.
Swinton said in the statement from the Berlinale that "to be honoured in this way by this particular festival is deeply touching for me".
She recalled that the Berlinale was "the first film festival I ever went to, in 1986 with Derek Jarman and the first film I made, his Caravaggio".
"It was my portal into the world in which I have made my life's work -- the world of international filmmaking -- and I have never forgotten the debt I owe it," she said.
Born in London in 1960, Swinton's early career was marked by appearances in European arthouse movies, appearing in several works directed by the late British filmmaker Derek Jarman.
She rose to international prominence in 1992 when she starred in Sally Potter's Oscar-nominated "Orlando".
Swinton won an Oscar in 2007 for her role in "Michael Clayton" and has starred in no fewer than 26 films at the Berlinale over the course of her long and illustrious career.

One Nation One Election: Parliamentary panel of 39 members to scrutinise proposed bills

The Enforcement Directorate on Friday filed a money laundering case against BRS leader K T Rama Rao and some others in a case linked to alleged payment irregularities during the Formula-E race held in Hyderabad in February 2023, official sources said.
An Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) has been registered under various sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act taking cognisance of a Telangana Police Anti-corruption bureau (ACB) FIR filed on Thursday, the sources said.
The accused in the ED case are the same as those mentioned in the ACB FIR, they said.

BRS leader and party working President K T Rama Rao, the son of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, has been named as accused number one followed by senior IAS officer Arvind Kumar and retired bureaucrat BLN Reddy as accused number two and three in the ACB complaint.
This is the second money laundering case against the family of BRS chief Chandrashekhar Rao as his daughter K Kavitha was questioned and later arrested by the ED in the Delhi excise policy case.
Kavitha is now out on bail and the case is before the court.
The probe against 48-year-old Rama Rao, popularly known as KTR, pertains to alleged payments of about Rs 55 crore, some of it in foreign currency without approvals, to conduct a Formula-E race in Hyderabad during the previous regime in February last year.
He had denied any wrongdoing, saying, "Where is the corruption in this? We have paid Rs 55 crore. They (Formula-E) acknowledged the payment." He added that it was a "straightforward" account.

"The HMDA (Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority) has an account in the Indian Overseas Bank and money has been transferred from that account..." KTR had said reacting to the ACB case.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy also attacked Rama Rao for these alleged irregularities, saying about Rs 500 crore was saved with the state government under him deciding against further transfer of funds to the organisers of the racing event.
Rama Rao, who was the Municipal Administration minister during the BRS regime, was instrumental in hosting the race last year in Hyderabad.
Though the race was supposed to be held in February this year as well, it was cancelled after the Congress government assumed office in December 2023.
In a linked development, the Telangana High Court on Friday directed the ACB officials not to arrest Rama Rao till December 30 as part of their investigation into the case.
High Court judge Justice Natcharaju Shravan Kumar Venkat was hearing a Lunch Motion petition moved by Rama Rao seeking to quash the FIR filed against him by the ACB.
Governor Jishnu Dev Varma had recently granted permission to the ACB to register the case against Rama Rao.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola confident of Erling Haaland finding form

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday confirmed the appointment of veteran Labour politician Peter Mandelson, a former minister and EU trade commissioner, as the next ambassador to the United States.
Mandelson, 71, will take up the post "early next year", Downing Street said, just as US president-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House for a second term.
"The United States is one of our most important allies and as we move into a new chapter in our friendship, Peter will bring unrivalled experience to the role and take our partnership from strength to strength," Starmer said in a statement.

Mandelson's appointment comes amid reported unease within the UK government about the prospects for London's so-called "special relationship" with Washington during Trump's second presidency.

The UK leader has been criticised heavily this year by Trump confidant Elon Musk.

But in a sign of the likely fraught nature of transatlantic ties under Trump, the choice drew an immediate rebuke from a senior figure within his presidential election team.
Campaign co-manager Chris LaCivita took to X to note Mandelson's previous description of the Republican leader as "little short of a white nationalist and racist".
"This UK govt is special -- replace a professional universally respected Ambo with an absolute moron -- he should stay home! SAD!" he posted. 
The stinging criticism follows Trump's campaign team accusing Starmer's Labour Party of interference during the recent US election over claims party staffers were helping his Democratic rival Kamala Harris.
Meanwhile, Mandelson's critique of Trump is reminiscent of disparaging remarks made by Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who previously called the incoming US president a "tyrant" and "xenophobic".
Lammy on Friday praised Mandelson's "wealth of experience in trade, economic and foreign policy from his years in government and the private sector".

“We have transferred the case from local police to the Crime Branch,” a senior officer said, adding that police are likely to record the statements of Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput and may also call Gandhi for questioning.

Meanwhile, police have sought legal advice on registering a separate FIR in response to a complaint filed by the Congress, accusing BJP MPs of misbehaving with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge on the Parliament premises.
“We are taking legal opinion if the Congress leaders’ complaint can be converted into the FIR,” another police officer said, adding that a decision on this will be taken soon.
Talking about the investigation in the case against Gandhi, the officer said police would seek access to CCTV footage of the area where the incident occurred and also reach out to media houses to inquire about any video evidence they may have.
Police will also recreate the scene of crime if required during the investigation, the source said.
On Thursday, BJP MP Hemang Joshi, accompanied by party colleagues Anurag Thakur and Bansuri Swaraj, visited the Parliament Street police station and filed the complaint.
The Congress strongly rejected the claim, alleging that BJP MPs pushed Kharge and “physically manhandled” Gandhi.
The Congress also lodged a complaint in connection with the matter on Thursday.
A delegation of Congress MPs, including Digvijaya Singh, Mukul Wasnik, Rajiv Shukla and Pramod Tiwari, filed the complaint visiting the station in person.
After political protests turned ugly, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday banned demonstrations by MPs and political parties at any of the gates of Parliament, sources said.
“Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has issued strict instructions that no political party, Member of Parliament or groups of members will hold any dharna and demonstration at building gates of Parliament House,” parliament sources said.
