Thus, former cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has schooled Gill and asked him to take a leaf out of MS Dhoni, one of the greatest finishers of all-time.

Manjrekar, in conversation with ESPNCricinfo, said, "Champion teams are those who are mindful of their weak areas even when winning matches and tackle the same. Against KKR, there was a clear lesson for Gujarat that on the good pitch don’t play with only five bowlers."

He further opined, "From this game, the takeaway is that if a batter is set, he should try and finish the game in the 18th or 19th over. If you are taking it till the end, show a temperament like MS Dhoni and don’t get out. Shubman Gill might be asked how the game went to the 20th over. Sai Sudharsan scored at a strike rate of around 100. David Miller was also rather quiet."

Gill, too, spoke about his innings and said after the match, "It got slower with the old ball. So we needed to get off to a good start in the powerplay. We lost a bit of momentum when Hardik bhai got out. It wasn't a big score but it was important to rotate the strike and not have dot balls."

At the post-match presentation, Hardik pointed out, "To be very honest I would not appreciate for the game to go this deep. There was definitely a lot for us to learn from this game... If Dhoni fails to recover from the knee issue which has troubled him for a while, he could be unavailable for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clash. However, head coach Stephen Fleming is optimistic about Dhoni’s chances while also stating that he has managed his injury well.

"He comes a month before the tournament starts, so he doesn't get the opportunity to do a lot [before that]," Fleming said.

"He will stay fit, they will do some netting in Ranchi, but his main pre-season [fitness] is done a month before when he comes to Chennai. And he works his way back into match-form and I think you can still see he's playing pretty well. So we never have any doubts about the way he manages himself and he always gets himself up to speed."

In four matches of the IPL 2023 Dhoni has scored 58 runs with a best unbeaten of 32.

In a video published on the CSK Twitter handle, Dhoni was seen given a guard of honour by all the franchise dignitaries along with players and coaching staff. Dhoni was seen walking towards N. Srinivasan, the principal owner of the franchise while he was given a special memorial to mark the occasion. Dhoni brought his spinners Moeen Ali (4 fior 26) and Mitchell Santer (1 for 21) to curb the run-flow and account for regular breakthroughs.

Due to Moeen-Santner's disciplined bowling, using the longer side of the ground to perfection, Dhoni didn't use star spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The former India skipper, however, was full of praise about the wicket and said that he hopes his team continue to play like this in the upcoming matches as well.

"It was a terrific game, high-scoring game. All of us were thinking how the wicket will be. We had that doubt. It was a high-scoring game. Overall I think it was a perfect first game that happened and it was a full house for the first game in 5 or 6 years since we've been here. I thought it will be much slower. It was a wicket where you could score runs but overall it got a bit slower. We'll have to see how it plays over the next six games at home but hopefully we can score here," Dhoni said.

Dhoni, who came into bat in the last, hit two consecutive sixes off LSG's Mark Wood to thrill the Cheapuk crowd. With those two sixes, MSD also became the seventh cricketer in IPL to enter the 5000-run club.

Sehwag also praised Dhoni for being consistent for very long and entering the list despite batting lower down the order.

No player might be able to score so many runs while playing at that number. He is consistent, scores runs and wins matches for his team. He is a very big player," Sehwag added.

Dhoni's CSK eventually scored 217/5 in 20 overs and beat LSG by 12 runs to complete a dream homecoming after nearly four years.
