US President Joe Biden on Friday (September 22) announced his administration was setting up a new office of gun violence prevention at the White House. The aim of the office is to provide coordination on the issue and implement existing laws while working with local authorities to pass gun safety legislation at the state level.

"I'm proud to announce the creation of the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, the first office in our history. Created by executive order, I'm determined to send a clear message about how important this issue is to me and to the country," said Biden during the announcement ceremony at the White House.

Despite the new push, the White House does not have unilateral power to meaningfully limit gun use in the United States, such as by banning assault weapons. Additionally, the new office lacks any kind of enforceable power to tackle the menace of gun violence.

Others surveyed also questioned Biden’s ability to understand and address issues affecting future generations of the country. US Vice President Kamala Harris slams Florida 'extremists' over education guidelines about slavery

United States Vice-President Kamala Harris matched a record in US history. The 101-year-old record is of casting tie-breaking votes as vice-president. In her latest move, Harris backed nomination of Indian-origin Kalpana Kotagal to be member of a federal agency.

Harris, who made history as first woman of colour to be vice president in 2020, has now equalled the record held by Senator John C Calhoun, who was a Democratic-Republican vice president to John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson from 1825 to 1832.

Vice President Harris cast her vote for nomination of Kotagal for as member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The commission is responsible for enforcing federal laws which make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.

There was a 50-50 tie in the Senate on the nomination of Kotagal, which Harris broke. This brings the number of total tie-breaking votes cast by her to 31. This has matched the record set by Calhoun who was an avowed proponent of states' rights and slavery.

The US vice president has a constitutional role in which he/she presides over the Senate and breaks ties if the house is deadlocked.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer mentioned Harris’s accomplishment on the floor on July 12 evening.

“I want to note that this is a history-making moment for the United States Senate,” he was quoted as saying by the Hill newspaper.

“When it’s mattered most, Vice President Harris has provided the decisive vote on some of the most historic bills of modern times, from the American Rescue Plan to the Inflation Reduction Act to so many federal judges who now preside and provide balance on the federal bench. She’s carried out her duties with supreme excellence,” he added.

Harris' earlier tie-breaking vote came on June 21. The vote broke a 50-50 tie over advancing Natasha Marle's nomination to serve as a judge fo Eastern District of New York. Another one was a 48-48 tie on confirming Araceli Martinez-Olguin to become a judge for North District of California.

In first two years after Harris assumed the vice-presidential office, the Senate was evenly split. This made the nickname of '101st Senator' a reality. Her first tie-breaker was just three weeks into the job in February 2021. In her first year, she cast 15 tie-breaking votes. Compared to Harris, her predecessor, former US vice-president Mike Pence, cast 13 such votes in all four years on the job.

Joe Biden, Kamala Harris woo donors for presidential election 2024 re-run

You can soon expect some fireworks on the TV as US Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to sit for a sit-down interview with actress Jennifer Hudson on her daytime talk show. This will be the first time that an elected US leader will appear as a guest on The Jennifer Hudson Show which has previously seen actors grace the hot seat. Reports suggest that the interview will discuss issues like the recent slate of school shootings, LGBTQ rights, climate change, and a possible TikTok ban. These are however just tentative topics and the show makers haven’t revealed anything yet.

Prior to this, Kamala Harris was seen getting into an interview with Stephen Colbert on his late-night talk show. During the show, Kamala discussed laws that are being passed about reproductive rights, as well as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ comments on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

During the Stephen Colbert show, Kamala was heard talking about Roe vs. Wade last year (law on reproductive rights) as she said, “I think it’s the height of irresponsibility. In fact, in many cases [it’s] inhumane what has been happening in states around our country that are passing laws that would criminalize health care providers, literally provide for jail time for doctors and nurses who provide reproductive health care, that would punish women for simply seeking the kind of care that they choose, that they need.”

Meanwhile, she has not spilled beans on whether she and US President Joe Biden plan on running for re-election in 2024 but instead, Biden said that he “intends to run” and if he does, Harris will be “running alongside him.”

US Vice President Kamala Harris to appear on Jennifer Hudson's talk show

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris travelled to Nashville on Friday to assist Tennessee state legislators who were expelled for breaching the rules by holding a pro-gun control rally on the floor of the statehouse following a recent school tragedy. Two young Black MPs who led demonstrators into the House floor well last week were ousted from the Tennessee House of Representatives on Thursday by the party in charge, while a resolution to boot a white representative failed by one vote.

United States Vice President Kamala Harris, on Friday (April 7) flew to Nashville, in the state of Tennessee to support recently ousted Democratic party lawmakers, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson from the state house. The two young Black lawmakers were expelled, while the third Democrat, Gloria Johnson avoided expulsion by a single vote on Thursday.

The Republican-controlled statehouse said that the trio had brought “disorder and dishonour to the House”. The lawmakers in question had staged a rule-breaking demonstration for gun control on the statehouse floor after a recent school shooting last week.

The March 27 attack at a Nashville School killed six people, including three nine-year-old children. According to reports, the US VP received applause and standing ovations for her remarks at the gathering at Fisk University, a historically Black school.

“The issue, which gets back to these three, is that we need leaders who have the courage to act at state houses and in Washington, DC, in the United States Congress. Have the courage to act instead of the cowardice to not allow debate,” said Harris.

She added, “Let’s not fall for the false choice — either you’re in favour of the Second Amendment or you want reasonable gun safety laws.
The US Vice President Kamala Harris visited the Gopalan family home in Lusaka and paid tribute to her maternal grandfather PV Gopalan, a member of the Indian Foreign Service, while on a visit to Zambia.

"My visit to Zambia has a special significance for me, as many of you know, and for my family. As you know, I visited Zambia, Mr President, as a young girl when my grandfather worked here," Vice President Harris told reporters in Lusaka at a joint news conference with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, reported the PTI.

Vice President Harris said in the news conference that her grandfather was a civil servant in India. "And in 1966, shortly after Zambia's independence, he came to Lusaka to serve as a director of relief measures and refugees. That was his title. He served as an adviser to Zambia's first president, Kenneth Kaunda. And he was an expert on refugee resettlement," she said.

"I remember my time here fondly. I was a child, so it is the memory of a child. But I remember being here and just how it felt, and the warmth and the excitement that was present. And, in fact, I was talking with my aunt recently, and she was reminding me of the relationships that she made when she was working at -- then it was called Lusaka Central Hospital -- when she was working there with the physicians there," Vice President Harris added.
