Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris said that abortion rights are being attacked across the country in a speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that upheld the right to an abortion until it was reversed last year.

"The right of every woman in every state in this country to make decisions about her own body is on the line," Harris said. "Republicans in Congress are now calling for a nationwide abortion ban... How dare they?"

In the 2023 legislative session, 60 anti-abortion legislation have been submitted, according to White House officials last week, and more than 26 million women presently reside in places where abortion is illegal.

"The majority of Americans oppose these attacks," Harris said, adding voters in states including Kansas, California, Michigan, Montana, Kentucky, and Vermont affirmed abortion rights in ballot proposals.

In a speech in Tallahassee, Florida, Harris also spoke in favour of federal legislation to safeguard reproductive rights, which Democrats tried to pass in the previous year while they were in charge of both chambers of Congress but failed to do so. Republican lawmakers, who now have a slim majority in the House of Representatives, are unlikely to embrace the idea.

As per AFP, the group of almost 85 men, women and children were largely made up of Columbians and Nicaraguans who had crossed into the US near the Eagle pass in Texas.

Political 'stunt': 85 migrants dropped outside VP Kamala Harris' house amid -18 degree temperature

Military veterans in the United States can now avail of free treatment when stuck in an “acute suicidal crisis”. Free treatment, including inpatient care of up to 30 days, and outpatient care of up to 90 days will now be available to them.

The mental health care plan was announced by the Department of Veterans. Announcing the move on Friday, Secretary for Veterans Affairs (VA) Denis McDonough in a statement that is available on the VA website said, “Veterans in suicidal crisis can now receive the free, world-class emergency health care they deserve–no matter where they need it, when they need it, or whether they’re enrolled in VA care.”

“This expansion of care will save Veterans’ lives, and there’s nothing more important than that,” he added.

As per the release, the care can be availed in both VA and non-VA healthcare facilities, and even those veterans that are not enrolled in the VA system can avail of the benefit.

Veterans who were discharged from the military after a minimum of two years of service are eligible for this care facility. However, those who were dishonourably discharged are not eligible.

Additionally, “former members of the armed forces, including reserve service members, who served more than 100 days under a combat exclusion or in support of a contingency operation either directly or by operating an unmanned aerial vehicle from another location who was discharged under conditions other than dishonourable,” can also avail the suicide care.

The policy will also apply to veterans who suffered “a physical assault of a sexual nature, a battery of a sexual nature, or sexual harassment while serving in the armed forces”.

According to the release statement, the policy will pay directly or reimburse treatment costs of eligible veterans.

The move is reportedly a key part of the Joe Biden- Kamala Harris administration plan for reducing military and veteran suicides.

Every year, hundreds of veterans haunted by their time in the army, suffering from mental health issues like PTSD, take their own lives. Suicide, as per a VA report, is the 13th leading cause of death among former army personnel. As per the report, in 2020, 6,146 US veterans died by suicide. Another report, this one by the US Defence Department, shows that in 2021, 519 US service members, including active duty, Reserve, and National Guard troops, died by suicide.

US Vice President Harris to visit Palawan on the edge of the South China Sea

On Monday, amid her ongoing visit to the Philippines, United States Vice President, Kamala Harris met with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the presidential palace in Manila and reaffirmed Washington’s “unwavering” commitment to defend its ally in the event of an attack in the South China Sea.

“We stand with you in defence of international rules and norms as it relates to the South China Sea,” said Harris to Marcos during their meeting. She added, “An armed attack on Philippine armed forces, vessels or aircraft in the South China Sea would invoke U.S. mutual defence commitments…that is our unwavering commitment to the Philippines.”

Meanwhile, Marcos said that he does not see a future for Manila “that does not include the United States”. Ahead of the high-level talks, on Sunday, a Philippine military commander accused a Chinese coast guard ship of “forcefully” retrieving a piece of suspected rocket debris floating in the ocean which was being towed by a Philippine vessel in the South China Sea.

However, China has since denied these allegations and said that it was taken after “both sides had a friendly negotiation at the scene”, following which the Philippines “handed over” the object to the Chinese, said Beijing's foreign ministry spokeswoman, Mao Ning, on Monday during a press briefing.

The vice president then will visit Palawan province along the South China Sea to meet fishermen, officials, the coast guard and the locals. The province is also seen at the forefront of the long ongoing territorial disputes involving China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

Washington with this visit is trying to strengthen its military alliance with the Philippines, including a mutual defence treaty and a 2014 pact which will allow the US to store its defence equipment and supply one to five Philippines bases.

Beijing has long claimed some of the territories off the coast of Palawan and much of that sea is China’s citing historical maps. However, an international arbitration, in 2016 said that their claims have no legal basis and ruled in the favour of Manila.

Harris will also deliver a speech before the Philippines’ police, coast guard, military and government officials and highlight the importance of international law, unhindered trade and navigation freedom in the South China Sea, said spokesperson, Commodore Armand Balilo.

United States Vice President Kamala Harris told Asian leaders on Friday that the "United States is here to stay” referring to the country's interest in the region both as an economic as well as strategic partner. During her address at the ongoing Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, Harris once again emphasised the commitment showed by the US towards its Asian allies and said that the country has a “vital interest in promoting a region that is open, interconnected, prosperous, secure and resilient.”

“The United States has an enduring economic commitment to the Indo-Pacific, one that is measured not in years, but in decades, and generations,” she said according to Reuters.

'US is here to stay': Kamala Harris reaffirms position on Asia at APEC summit

US Vice President Kamala Harris will visit the Philippine islands of Palawan that lie on the edge of the disputed South China Sea, a senior administration official told Reuters on Tuesday. US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met each other just at the G20 Summit in Bali and this announcement now is likely to anger Beijing.

When Harris visits the islands next Tuesday, she will become the highest-ranking American official to visit the island chain. It may be noted that China has dredged the sea floor to build harbours and airstrips on the Spratly Islands, while Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also claim parts of the area.

China claims some territories in the waters off Palawan and much of the South China Sea, citing domestic historical maps. But an international arbitration ruling in 2016 found no legal basis for the Chinese claims. The South China Sea contains massive oil and gas deposits and ship-borne trade worth $5 trillion is conducted across it each year.

"In Palawan, Harris will meet with residents, civil society leaders and representatives of the Philippines Coast Guard," the senior administration official said.

The official added that the trip will reinforce the administration's "commitment to stand with our Philippine ally in upholding the rules-based international maritime order in the South China Sea, supporting maritime livelihoods and countering illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing."

On Tuesday, Manila had announced that Washington would spend $66.5 million for training and warehouse facilities at three of its military bases there under a 2014 joint security deal.

This will be Harris's second trip to Asia in three months and strategically aims to discourage any aggressive steps by China, including in self-ruled Taiwan. She will also stop in Thailand for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders meeting.

During her last trip to the region, Harris accused China of actions to "coerce and intimidate" neighbours.

However, South China Sea expert Gregory Poling told Reuters that instead of angering Beijing, the visit could send a strong message to the Philippines since she is not visiting a disputed territory.

"It will be reassuring to the Philippines by sending a clear signal that, even with Ukraine and Taiwan at the centre stage, the United States still recognises the South China Sea as central to the future of the U.S.-Philippine alliance," said Poling, who is the director of the Southeast Asia Programme at Washington's Center for Strategic and International Studies.

For the second time this week, a bus from Texas dropped down roughly 50 migrants outside Vice President Kamala Harris' apartment at the Naval Observatory in Washington, DC on Thursday.

US: Bus carrying migrants arrives outside Kamala Harris' residence again

The motorcade of US Vice President Kamala Harris met with an accident on Monday. However, this neither made headlines in the papers nor was it breaking news on any channel in the United States because the US Secret Service allegedly tried to cover it up.

US: Kamala Harris' motorcade met with an accident, transferred to another vehicle

US vice president Kamala Harris was involved in a car accident on Monday that the Secret Service incorrectly labelled as a "mechanical failure."

The vice president was shifted to another car after her motorcade hit a curb on the route to the White House, according to a report published on Wednesday by The Washington Post.

Director of the Secret Service Kim Cheatle voiced worry that the incident had been "mischaracterised" as a "mechanical breakdown," according to the report.

Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi claimed in a statement to USA Today on Wednesday that one of the motorcade's vehicles "had a little overcorrection and clipped a curb."

The vehicle's occupant, Harris, was moved to another vehicle and driven to the White House, as reported by the Independent.

“Initial radio traffic indicated this was a mechanical failure and that was communicated to agency leadership by personnel supporting the motorcade movement,” Guglielmi said.

“After the protective movement was completed, leadership was verbally updated with additional pertinent facts that the vehicle struck a curb.”

An official motorcade was purportedly seen approaching the tunnel and going inside in a social media video that was allegedly shot after the collision.

US President Joe Biden and top White House officials announced new guidelines and grants to protect abortion and contraception rights on Tuesday. Biden met with doctors and politicians to discuss guidelines which will make abortion and contraception more accessible to the common people. According to Reuters, the government will be spending $6 million in new grants to protect access to reproductive healthcare services.

He further said that the overturning of Roe v Wade by the Supreme Court has “curtailed the women’s rights” in the country. It has been 100 days since the judgement and Biden said that it is extremely important to protect abortion and contraception rights in the US.

At a meeting of the reproductive rights task force, Biden also said that the decision to make abortion harder to access for women in the US “has had frightening ripple effects in some states”.

WION Dispatch: Kamala Harris meets Yoon Suk-yeol amid North Korea threat

The military in Seoul said on Thursday that North Korea had launched an unidentified ballistic missile. This was Pyongyang's third launch in less than a week, and it occurred only hours after US Vice President Kamala Harris left South Korea.

According to a statement from Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff, North Korea launched an unidentified ballistic missile into the East Sea, often known as the Sea of Japan.

In addition, the Japanese coast guard reported a potential North Korean ballistic missile launch, according to information from Tokyo's defence ministry.

As part of a mission to fortify the security pact with Seoul, Harris visited South Korea's strongly guarded border with the nuclear-armed North.

Speaking at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), Harris claimed that the US was "ironclad" in its commitment to South Korea's defence and that the partners were "aligned" in their approach to the North's growing arsenal of weapons.

In order to defend South Korea from the North, Washington has stationed around 28,500 troops there, and this week, as a show of strength, the allies are conducting a sizable joint naval exercise.

In the days prior to Harris's arrival, Pyongyang launched two prohibited ballistic missiles, extending a record-breaking run of weapons tests this year.

N Korea fires third ballistic missile this week, hours after Harris leaves from S Korea

US Vice President Kamala Harris was headed to Seoul and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the Koreas on Thursday, just hours after North Korea test-fired missiles and underscored ongoing regional tensions.

Aides said the visit is intended to show unwavering US commitment to South Korea's security but took on new urgency after the two short-range ballistic missiles were shot off North Korea's east coast on Wednesday.

US President Joe Biden's aides have been shoring up alliances to manage China in the region, including over Taiwan. But South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol told CNN in an interview aired on Sunday that in a conflict over Taiwan, North Korea would be more likely to stage a provocation and that the alliance should focus on that concern first.

The missile test is the second since Sunday and comes two days after South Korea and U.S. forces conducted a military drill in waters off South Korea's east coast involving an aircraft carrier.

North Korea's Kim Jong Un has said it is developing nuclear weapons and missiles to defend against US threats.

Following a stop at a military base in Japan, Harris called recent missile launches part of an "illicit weapons programme which threatens regional stability and violates multiple UN Security Council resolutions."

Harris' visit to the DMZ is the first by a senior Biden administration official and is expected to follow a meeting with Yoon.

Several former U.S. presidents, and Biden himself before he became president, have visited the DMZ, but former President Donald Trump became the first to have met a North Korean leader there when he held a third meeting with Kim Jong Un in 2019 as part of his unsuccessful effort to persuade Kim to give up his nuclear and missile programs.

The DMZ is often described as the world's last Cold War frontier and has existed since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a armistice rather than a peace treaty.

The DMZ is often described as the world's last Cold War frontier and has existed since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a armistice rather than a peace treaty. US VP Kamala Harris visiting Seoul, Korean DMZ hours after Kim Jong Un's missile test

Just hours after North Korea tested missiles, US Vice President Kamala Harris and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol denounced North Korea's escalating nuclear rhetoric and weapons tests during meetings on Thursday in Seoul.

Harris met Yoon after landing in the South Korean capital early on Thursday amid simmering tensions in the area over North Korea's missile launches and China's moves in the Taiwan Strait. She also visited the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) aimed at strengthening the security alliance with Seoul.

On Wednesday, North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast. The country also passed a new law earlier this month that formalised its authority to employ nuclear weapons as a kind of preemption.

The White House said Harris and Yoon reaffirmed their shared commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and denounced Pyongyang's "provocative nuclear statements and ballistic missile tests."

"They discussed our response to potential future provocations, including through trilateral cooperation with Japan," the White House said in a statement.

Harris also reaffirmed the U.S. extended deterrence commitment to the Asian ally, including "the full range of U.S. defence capabilities," it added.

Both parties also discussed potential adjustments to American electric vehicle subsidies that South Korea worries may hurt its auto industry.
