North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the ocean off its east coast in advance of upcoming military exercises involving South Korean and American forces and an aircraft carrier as well as a visit to the area by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris.

A single short-range ballistic missile was launched just before 7 a.m. from a location close to North Pyongyang's Taechon area, according to South Korea's military.

Japan's defence minister Yasukazu Hamada stated that the missile may have flown on an erratic trajectory and that Japan believed it reached a maximum altitude of 50 km. There were no reports of maritime or air traffic issues, according to Hamada, and it was outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone.

The launch took place as the nuclear-powered USS Ronald Reagan arrived in South Korea to take part in joint exercises with South Korean forces and before Harris's upcoming trip to Seoul this week.

After launching eight short-range ballistic missiles in a single day at the beginning of June, the North carried out its first launch of this kind, prompting the United States to ask for more sanctions for violating U.N. Security Council resolutions.

North Korea has attacked prior joint drills by the United States and South Korea as evidence of their hostile actions and opposes U.N. resolutions as an infringement of its sovereign right to self-defence and space exploration.

Russia and China, who have urged all parties to avoid taking actions that would heighten regional tensions, have also criticised the drills and called for a relaxation of the sanctions.

Following an unprecedented number of missile tests by North Korea earlier this year, which included the first use of its intercontinental ballistic missiles since 2017, the United States and South Korea declared they would increase their military exercises and displays of strength in an effort to deter Pyongyang.

Can bused, flown migrants live in United States? Here is all you need to know

The US vice president's house in Washington, DC, receives another busload of nearly 50 migrants, including a month-old infant, as part of the latest unannounced cross-country transfer by Republican-led states.

The Texas governor, considering most of them to be Venezuelan, dropped off the migrants outside of the Naval Observatory, the traditional residence of Kamala Harris, US Vice President. A similar group of migrants flew to Massachusetts, sent by the Florida governor.

With these transfers, Democratic politicians and immigrant activists demanded to look into possible human trafficking offences. The vice president accused the Republican elected leaders of playing games involving human lives.

In conversation with Vice News, Harris said, "I think it is the height of irresponsibility much less, just frankly a dereliction of duty when you are an elected leader, to play those kinds of games with human life, and human beings, The Guardian reported.

Similar instances of sending migrants to other states and vice president's residences have occurred. Last week, Abbott, Texas's governor, sent three full buses to New York and also sent 100 migrants to Harris's residence on Thursday (Sept 15).

The two chartered planes sent to Massachusets by Florida's governor, including infants, prompted the island's residents to hustle to help with food and other necessities for this unexpected influx of people. Further, Florida's governor, DeSantis, stated that all American communities, not just those near the border with Mexico, should share the load, saying Biden's border strategy was a failure. Abbott also supported and claimed to have sent migrants to "sanctuary cities."

On the other hand, the president criticised the Republicans for using people as political props and stated that what they are doing was completely wrong.

According to several immigration organizations, these transfers are misled about their intended destinations, making Republican governors essentially traffickers. Racheal Rollins, US attorney for Massachusetts, promised to look into the matter for possible human trafficking.

Since April, Texas has bussed nearly 8,000 people to Washington, including Harris's residence, with 300 bussed to Chicago and over 2,000 to New York. Arizona also bused over 1,500 migrants to Washington.

United States Vice President Kamala Harris weighed in on how the nation is being made weaker by the anti-democratic forces that have apparently emerged in the mainstream of American politics. As per Harris, such forces are also undermining the legitimacy of the country overseas. She described it as a major threat.

During an interview that was aired on Sunday on NBC News' "Meet the Press", Harris was asked a question related to the tragic 9/11 tragedy.

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed when hijacked jetliners crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.

The US vice president was asked whether the threats from within the United States pose a risk equal to or greater than what the nation faced 21 years ago on 9/11.

During the interview, Harris noted the oaths of the office she had taken as a prosecutor, California's attorney general, a senator and vice president to uphold the Constitution "against all enemies, foreign and domestic — and we don’t compare the two."

She said, "It is very dangerous and, I think, very harmful. And it makes us weaker."

She added, "I think what it sends is a signal that causes people to question, 'Hey, is America still valuing what they talk about?'. I think that through the process of what we’ve been through, we’re starting to allow people to call into question our commitment to those principles. And that's a shame."

US VP Kamala Harris says threats from within country harming America at home and abroad: Report

The US Senate has passed Democrats-endorsed $750 billion health care, tax and climate bill, in a major victory for President Joe Biden ahead of crucial midterm elections in November.

After a 27-hour marathon discussion over the weekend where the Republicans tried to derail the package, the Senate on Sunday approved the legislation known as the Inflation Reduction Act by a 51-50 party line vote with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote.

The bill will be tabled next in the Democrat-controlled House, which is expected to take on Friday. After it gets passed, the bill will be sent to the White House for Biden’s signature. In a statement, Biden said he looked forward to signing the bill into law.

“Today, Senate Democrats sided with American families over special interests. I ran for President promising to make government work for working families again, and that is what this bill does — period,” Biden said in a statement from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

He urged the House to pass the bill as soon as possible. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said her chamber would “move swiftly to send this bill to the president’s desk.”

The legislation, if signed into law, would allocate $369 billion to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and investing in renewable energy sources.

Further, it will lower healthcare costs for millions of Americans by allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices and capping Medicare recipients’ out-of-pocket prescription drug prices at $2,000 a year.

Those who receive health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act marketplace are also expected to see lower premium costs.

The bill also proposes a new corporate minimum tax, a 1 per cent excise tax on stock buybacks and stricter enforcement by the Internal Revenue Service.

Bitter China hosts dialogue with Pacific island nations on the same day as Pacific Island Forum meeting

The United States launched a major push into the Pacific on Wednesday, seeking to hold off China’s advance in the region, with Vice President Kamala Harris announcing $600 million in funding at a key regional summit.

Harris also revealed the US will open two new embassies -- in Tonga and Kiribati -- during an unprecedented address to the Pacific Islands Forum in Fiji.

The US will also appoint its first-ever enjoy to the Pacific and launch an inaugural national strategy for the region.

The US-China rivalry has brought intense interest to this year's forum, which brings together leaders from across the strategically vital Pacific.

It marks the first time regional leaders have met together since the Solomon Islands signed a controversial security pact with China earlier this year.

Harris' video-link address was a diplomatic coup for the US, with China not yet invited to make a similar appearance at the summit.

At least one official from the local Chinese embassy was in the room for Harris' address, causing a minor stir among organisers.

The US vice president thanked Fiji President Voreqe Bainimarama for inviting her to speak at the summit and said the US was ready to "embark on a new chapter" in the Pacific.

Harris said she and US President Joe Biden acknowledged the Pacific may not have previously received enough focus in the past.

"We are going to change that," she promised, adding the US wanted to "significantly deepen our presence in the Pacific region".

Alongside a US$60 million pledge for economic assistance to the Forum Fisheries Agency, she said the US would also relaunch the Peace Corps in the Pacific.

She said the US wanted to collaborate on maritime security, disaster relief and infrastructure projects that "do not result in insurmountable debt".

"We are really happy that the US will be opening an embassy in Tonga, it will be the first time," Tongan Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni told AFP.

"It is a big milestone. We are very happy we are finally having a US presence in Tonga."

US VP Kamala Harris launches $600m push in Pacific nations, with eye on China

US President Kamala Harris announced on Tuesday a fresh USD 1.9 billion in private sector funding aimed at boosting jobs in hopes of reducing migration from Central America. The announcement was made at a Latin America summit in Los Angeles. Leaders of Mexico and other affected countries have snubbed the summit.

Tackling root causes of rising migration to the US has become a top priority for US President Joe Biden and the task has been handed to Harris.

Republican Party has seized upon the issue of migration. Donald Trump, former US president who was from Republican Party wanted to build a physical wall along southern border of the USA to deter migration.

At Latin America Summit in Los Angeles, Harris' unveiling of USD 1.9 billion in business commitments has come a day before President Biden is due to be present. The fresh funding is in addition to USD 1.2 billion announced last year.

The funding is aimed at creating economic opportunities in the impoverished so-called Northern Triangle of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras

During her announcement, Harris also announced creation of "Central American Service Corps" funded through US aid to mentor young people

A White House statement said that the investments aim "to provide hope for people in the region to build safe and prosperous lives at home."

Interestingly, none of the Northern Triangle leaders are attending the summit. Mexican President Obrador is absent too But Prime Minister Ariel Henry of Haiti -- another rising source of migrants as the country further descends into violence -- will attend.

The United States Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday (May 28) said 'enough is enough' and called for an assault weapons ban in the country. She attended the funeral of 86-year-old Ruth Whitfield, who was killed two weeks ago during the Buffalo supermarket shooting. Her comments come days after another mass shooting shocked the country. Recently, an 18-year-old gunman entered an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. He opened fire, killing two teachers and 19 children.

Harris said, "What happened here in Buffalo, in Texas, in Atlanta, in Orlando, what happened in the synagogues, this is a moment that requires all good people, all people who love God, to stand up and say, 'We will not tolerate this. Enough is enough!'"

"We will come together and not let those people, who are motivated by hate, drive us apart or make us afraid," she added. Harris spoke after Reverend Al Sharpton asked her to reflect on mass shootings during the past several years and said the US is experiencing "an epidemic of hate."

The recent mass shootings in the United States have reignited the debate over gun control, especially the Texas shooting, where small children died. The Texas shooting is the worst shooting at an elementary school since the 2012 Sandy Hook attack in Connecticut. At that time, 20 children and six staff were killed.

"We will not let those people who are motivated by hate to separate us or make us feel fear," Harris said at the funeral.

She also urged US lawmakers to take action on guns. "Congress must have the courage to stand up, once and for all, to the gun lobby and pass reasonable gun safety laws," Harris tweeted.

US Vice President Kamala Harris tests positive for COVID-19

Since he took office in 2021 and in the past few days in particular, US President Joe Biden, 79, has been the butt of online jokes and trolling for his so-called gaffes.

Sample some of the latest: Biden calls Vice President Kamala Harris, the president. Biden has bird poop on his jacket but carries on with his speech. Biden speaks about Afghanistan and Pakistan but is diverted away by an Easter bunny. Biden appears to shake hands in the air with nobody, yet goes ahead with it anyway.

But look at these facts.

What happens when a person ages?

Human cognitive activity declines with age but there are variations. Generally, it starts at age 60 but some people can be fine even into their 80s.

Brain power declines with age with shrinking of the organ starting from the 30s or 40s in some cases and worsening from the 60s onward in most cases.

Our memory - short term and long term - starts fading, and it’s perfectly normal and a consequence of lesser brain activity caused partly by the shrinkage.

Age-related forgetfulness is not always a cause of Alzheimers’ disease or any such ailment. It just happens.

And the involuntary loss of muscle mass, which in fact starts in the 30s, becomes worse in the 60s onwards and leads to several mishaps and accidents that lead the elderly to be less active, wheel-chair bound, or bed-ridden.

Bone density starts to decline in the 50s.

I can go on, but you get the idea.

Now, what's a typical day for the president of the United States?

Much of it is not known to the public, but let's take a random day from what is.

The schedule of Biden on 21 April 2022 looks something like this:

9:00 AM -Receives the President’s Daily Brief; 9:45 AM - Provides an update on Russia and Ukraine at Roosevelt Room; 10:20 AM - Departs the White House en route Joint Base Andrews; 10:40 AM - Departs Joint Base Andrews en route Portland, Oregon; 3:40 PM - Arrives in Portland, Oregon; 4:05 PM - Visits Portland International Airport ; 5:10 PM - Delivers remarks on the investment that has been made thanks in part to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law; 6:30 PM - Participates in a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee; 7:25 PM - Departs Portland, Oregon en route Seattle, Washington; 8:15 PM - Arrives in Seattle, Washington; 9:30 PM - Participates in a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee

I’ve cut some parts to bore you less, but you get the point. It’s a 12-hour work day. Some days are less packed than the others, but it’s generally a busy schedule.

This is in addition to the many other news interviews, speeches, public appearances, planned and unplanned media interactions.

Biden is no stranger to any of these. He is one of the longest-serving senators, and is not new to the White House, as he has been vice president before.

It's OK to make a political point against him. But to stalk his every move and troll him for being an elderly man smacks of ageism.

Such micro-analyses may have cost Hillary Clinton the presidency when she contested against Donald Trump. When on the grueling campaign trail, a video caught her appearing to faint. She said she is fine, but the damage had been done, and may have contributed to a perception she's not fit to be president. Ageism, mixed with sexism, is a deadly cocktail.

Similar attacks were made about Trump being overweight, having lost his marbles and being out of touch. But then, Trump kind of invited such criticism, almost reveling in it, as long as he is the headline.

Watch: Biden interrupted by Easter Bunny while answering questions on Afghanistan

Old people can rule

The issue here is the public perception that elderly people are senile. So let’s now look at the oldest heads of governments and heads of state.

A random check reveals many of them ruled past 80.

Queen Elizabeth II of Britain just turned 96. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is 83. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is 86. The age range of the top 10 oldest leaders currently living and ruling is from 96 to 83. I rest my case.

May be the cultural insensitivity towards older people is what's reflected in the constant attention to Biden's gaffes.

So, what is ageism?

Simply put, it is the mental or attitudinal bullying of people based on their age. It may be active, passive, or passive-aggressive.

World Health Organization defines ageism as “the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on age.”

We live in a youth-obsessed society. Looking younger and fitter than your age is a million-dollar industry.

At the same time, we also live in a world where several countries have ageing populations, and it’s also an era of medical advancements that makes longevity possible.

And the younger ones should not forget that, with some luck, we will all reach where Biden is now.

The schedule of Biden on 21 April 2022 looks something like this: 9:00 AM -Receives the President’s Daily Brief; 9:45 AM - Provides an update on Russia and Ukraine at Roosevelt Room; 10:20 AM - Departs the White House en route Joint Base Andrews; 10:40 AM - Departs Joint Base Andrews en route Portland, Oregon; 3:40 PM - Arrives in Portland, Oregon; 4:05 PM - Visits Portland International Airport ; 5:10 PM - Delivers remarks on the investment that has been made thanks in part to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law; 6:30 PM - Participates in a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee; 7:25 PM - Departs Portland, Oregon en route Seattle, Washington; 8:15 PM - Arrives in Seattle, Washington; 9:30 PM - Participates in a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee I’ve cut some parts to bore you less, but you get the point. Watch: Biden interrupted by Easter Bunny while answering questions on Afghanistan Old people can rule The issue here is the public perception that elderly people are senile. World Health Organization defines ageism as “the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on age.” We live in a youth-obsessed society. Looking younger and fitter than your age is a million-dollar industry. At the same time, we also live in a world where several countries have ageing populations, and it’s also an era of medical advancements that makes longevity possible. And the younger ones should not forget that, with some luck, we will all reach where Biden is now. Watch | How did Joe Biden become so unpopular?
