After missing out on all action in World Cup 2023 with a left hip injury, champion player Ben Stokes will return to contention for selection for the crucial South Africa clash in Mumbai. England captain Jos Buttler declared him ‘almost fit’ ahead of the Afghanistan CWC match in Delhi, but upon regaining full fitness, Stokes will resume batting in nets to push for a case in the XI.

A 2019 World Cup winner with England, Stokes, unretired from the ODIs earlier this year to remain available for the marquee event. After his record-breaking 182 against New Zealand at the Oval in September, Stokes is out of action since and even sat out of England’s first three CWC games, wherein they lost two of them.

Stokes will participate in the practice sessions on Thursday evening and Friday morning.&nbsp;

Speaking to the BBC about his preparations ahead of a crucial game against South Africa, Stokes admitted to being frustrated with the timing of the injury.&nbsp;

But on the flip side, he seemed excited for his first game of this campaign, saying he worked hard to be here.

"[It was] a frustrating little niggle to get before the tournament starts," Stokes told BBC on Thursday. "But I have worked very hard to get back to where I am and making myself ready to be available for selection."

"We have had a few days off since the last game and the first training session here in Mumbai. [I will] give it a good push but, yes, I think everything is pretty good. I am in a good place,” the star all-rounder added.

Given their stance on the points table, England found itself in a tricky situation considering sealing the semis berth.&nbsp;

However, Stokes believes there's a lot of cricket left in the tournament, and England can make a comeback.

"We are only three games into a tournament," Stokes said. "There is still a long way to go. It [the loss to Afghanistan] was disappointing in the moment, but at the end of the day, we have lost a game of cricket in a World Cup.&nbsp;

“Everyone is going to lose games, and it's one of those things we had to deal with quickly, understand that we didn't perform well but move on, and understand we have a lot more cricket left to play,” Stokes added.

World Cup: England receive boost as champion Ben Stokes declared fit for crucial South Africa clash

Following hosting the second match of the World Cup 2023 between Bangladesh and Afghanistan, the HPCA Cricket Stadium in Dharamsala has come under severe scrutiny over patchy and sandy outfield, deemed ‘average’ by ICC on Sunday. On Monday, on the eve of the second match at this venue, England captain Jos Buttler voiced his concerns over an injury scare for anyone, let alone his side’s players, playing on this outfield.

Afghanistan’s head coach, Jonathan Trott, also sounded worried for Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman, who, during the game against Bangladesh, escaped suffering a knee injury after visuals showed how his knee got jammed into the patchy outfield while fielding near the boundary.&nbsp;

However, upon inspection by an independent pitch consultant, Andy Atkinson, authorised by the ICC, he, alongside the match referee, Javagal Srinath, appeared ‘comfortable’ with the playing conditions at the venue.

Speaking to the media ahead of the second England game in this World Cup, Captain Jos Buttler didn’t look ‘okay’ with the patchy outfield, especially near the boundary line, urging his players to be careful while fielding in the deep.

"I think it's poor, in my own opinion," Buttler said.&nbsp;

"I think any time you're talking about being careful diving, or maybe being careful when you're fielding, it goes against everything you want to be as a team.

"You want to dive through a row of houses to save a run. That's obviously not ideal, the way the surface is, the outfield. But we won't use it as an excuse. We'll adapt to it. But certainly, if you feel like you're having to hold yourself back, it's not a place you want to be as a team, or as a player, or in a World Cup match,” England’s captain said.

<h2>‘Fielding becomes a risk</h2>

Given the nature of the sport, any injury at this point can hamper a side’s World Cup campaign, and Buttler is no different in fearing the worst.

Seemingly worried about players not putting in their 100% while fielding, the English captain said, "You want to put your body on the line and be trying to save every single run and have confidence in the field. It's not as good as it could be, or should be.”

"Naturally, you want to be instinctive in the field: if you see a ball, you want to dive for it. So, it's unique, to be honest, and I know it's going to be the same for both teams. But if you're having to hold yourself back, you shouldn't have to feel like that. Hopefully, fingers crossed, no one on either side picks up an unfortunate injury," he added.

Meanwhile, England lost their opening match to New Zealand by nine wickets, whereas, Bangladesh stood tall against Afghanistan, winning by six wickets.

World Cup: The way the surface is, outfield is, that’s not ideal: Jos Buttler on Dharamsala ground situation

In the opening game of CWC 2023 edition, in Ahmedabad, England faced New Zealand where the Kiwis thrashed the defending champions by nine wickets in pursuit of 283 on Thursday evening (October 5). Jos Buttler-led England were asked to bat first and the batting-heavy line-up only managed 282 for 9 in 50 overs which was later chased down by New Zealand with nine wickets and 82 balls to spare.&nbsp;

With the ball, England got an early wicket in the form of Will Young for 0 (1) before Rachin Ravindra (123*)-Devon Conway (unbeaten 152)'s 273-run second-wicket stand ended the game in a jiffy.&nbsp;

Speaking on SENQ Breakfast, Australia's former Test captain Tim Paine reacted to England's heavy defeat and stated that most Australian cricket fans would have enjoyed England getting 'smashed' like they&nbsp;did. "They smashed them. I watched it. I wanted to have a bit of an early night last night, we got home from Allan Border field at about 10 o'clock and I thought, ‘I'll have a good sleep’, but it was just too good to watch. Watching England get smacked around the park. I stayed up for most of it and enjoyed it like I'm sure most Australian cricket fans did and hopefully it continues," Paine said.

Paine also pointed out that dew had set in at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday evening, making it easy for New Zealand batters Rachin and Conway to go after Mark Wood -- England's pace spearhead.&nbsp;

"In India, that can be the issue. The faster you go over there, the harder it is to defend grounds. They're small grounds. They're very flat wickets. It looked like last night, it was sort of a bit dewy. So, it was sliding onto the bat, and he was bowling 150 km/h. It looked like if he didn't hit the stumps, it was just flying away for four whether they hit in the middle of the bat or not."

Wood ended with figures of 0 for 55 in five overs. For England, they will like to forget this match at the earliest as they next face Bangladesh in Dharamshala&nbsp; on Tuesday (October 10).

'Just too good to watch': Tim Paine on England's humiliating loss vs New Zealand in CWC '23 opener

England skipper Jos Buttler has played down the champion's tag as his side enters the ODI World Cup in India. Buttler, who will lead England in ODI World Cup will see his team face New Zealand in the curtain-raiser clash on Thursday (Oct 5). According to him, his side is not trying to defend anything despite entering the tournament with the champion's tag. The ODI World Cup will kick start on Thursday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad with England and New Zealand playing in a repeat of the 2019 edition’s final.

"We're not trying to defend anything. We're trying to go there and win a World Cup. We're in exactly the same position as every other team,” Buttler said on the eve of the tournament.

"I have said lots of times, I don't see us as defending champions.”

Buttler’s England has been in fine form recently where they beat New Zealand 3-1 in the ODI series and will have momentum on their side. Buttler could become the second captain to win the ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup after India’s MS Dhoni, with the Indian star completing the set in 2011.

On the horizon, England could also become the third team to defend the ODI World Cup after West Indies and Australia. They are in fine form ahead of the World Cup opener but will sweat on the fitness of star man Ben Stokes. The returning star is not 100 per cent going into the match, with the final call to be taken on match day. England’s warm-up matches saw them draw a blank against India after rain played spoilsport while the Bangladesh contest saw them win by four wickets on the DLS method.

In the opposition, Kane Williamson will be a big miss for New Zealand who won’t play the opening clash while Tim Southee will also miss out. New Zealand will eye for revenge on multiple fronts having lost the final in the 2019 edition in an excruciating manner. The curtain-raiser clash will start at 2:00 PM IST with the toss taking place at 1:30 PM at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This will be the 11th meeting between the sides at the ODI World Cup, with both England and New Zealand winning five matches each.

CWC 2023: England skipper Jos Buttler plays down champions tag, says 'we're not trying to defend anything'

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that Jos Buttler-led defending champions have it in them to replicate their 2019 success in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Vaughan feels England are mentally tough and, thus, can win the title once again in the ongoing edition. Buttler &amp; Co. are one of the contenders and have entered the 50-over showpiece event as the No. 5 ranked side.&nbsp;

In his column for The Telegraph, Vaughan wrote, "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for this group. They can do it because England are very tough mentally. In a difficult situation, one of the players will stand up and do something to drag the team over the line."

"They generally blow teams away but when it gets spicy – such as the 2019 World Cup final and the must-win games in that tournament – they are mentally stronger than the rest," he further stated.

However, Vaughan sounded a bit concerned about the English bowling. In this regard, the 48-year-old added, "The doubt is whether the bowling (can) maximise conditions and take wickets at key times. We know the white ball in the UK does a bit early on and the likes of Chris Woakes and Curran are such a threat. But will the wickets nullify those two?"

England have kicked off the CWC 2023 edition against New Zealand in the tournament opener at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. They will be eager to start off with a bang and build on the momentum. They have two big games in the latter half of the tournament, versus India (on October 29 in Lucknow) and against arch-rivals Australia (on November 4 in Ahmedabad). The result of the two games will determine England's road ahead in the mega event.

'England can win World Cup 2023 as...': Former England captain Michael Vaughan's BIG claim

England's World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan feels winning the CWC 2023 edition, which kicks off on October 5 (Thursday) in India, would be a bigger achievement for Jos Buttler-led defending champions after their 2019 success. In the last edition, held in England and Wales, Morgan-led England won the ODI World Cup for the first time ever, beating New Zealand in terms of boundary count in an epic final at Lord's on July 14.

Buttler-led England will start the tournament as one of the favourites. Morgan believes winning the title this time around would be a bigger achievement as he feels the white-ball captain&nbsp;Buttler has not had the same level of support in the build-up to this World Cup as Morgan had ahead of the 2019 edition. Back then, England were revamping their white-ball teams following a disastrous 2015 World Cup. Thus, the priority was white-ball cricket.

In recent times, Test cricket has regained priority in England cricket due to Ashes 2021/22 and Ashes 2023. A lot of times, Buttler has not been able to field the main XI with many being rested for Test cricket. Even in last year's T20 World Cup, which Buttler &amp; Co. won in Australia, a lot of the regulars featured together after a long gap. Thus, Morgan believes it will be a bigger achievement for England to win this upcoming edition, which is also being played in&nbsp;unfamiliar conditions.

In his column for Sky Sports, Morgan wrote, "The challenges for me going into 2019 were completely different to what Jos has gone through coming into this tournament. Between 2015 and 2019, our sole focus was trying to win the ODI World Cup at home. There was a clear emphasis on having your best players available in the year leading up and trying to get absolute role clarity in every position possible. Jos has not had that."

"All things considered, it would without a doubt be a bigger achievement for England to win this World Cup than when we won in 2019. The nature of the schedule has not allowed them to have the type of preparation they would like and being away from home, especially in India where India are so strong, is tough. Winning here would carry a lot more weight than winning at home. I am still extremely hopeful that England can defend the title, though," Morgan added.

Winning the ODI World Cup is certainly not easy but defending it is much more difficult. Only West Indies (1975 and 1979) and Australia (who won three in a row in 1999, 2003 and 2007) have managed to defend their titles. Hence, England have a herculean task -- despite having one of the strongest squads -- to win the upcoming edition in India.

England's World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan feels winning the CWC 2023 edition, which kicks off on October 5 (Thursday) in India, would be a bigger achievement for Jos Buttler-led defending champions after their 2019 success.

Morgan believes winning the title this time around would be a bigger achievement as he feels the white-ball captain Buttler has not had the same level of support in the build-up to this World Cup as Morgan had ahead of the 2019 edition. Even in last year's T20 World Cup, which Buttler & Co. won in Australia, a lot of the regulars featured together after a long gap. Thus, Morgan believes it will be a bigger achievement for England to win this upcoming edition, which is also being played in unfamiliar conditions. Jos has not had that." Also read: New Zealand's Tim Southee 'hoping to be right in time' post injury for ODI World Cup opener against England × "All things considered, it would without a doubt be a bigger achievement for England to win this World Cup than when we won in 2019. Winning CWC '23 in India would be bigger achievement for England than 2019 title, says ex-captain Morgan

Legendary former India player Sunil Gavaskar has backed Jos Buttler’s England to clinch the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. The 1983 World Cup winner from India backed England to win the marquee tournament in 2019 and has asserted his faith in England for the upcoming edition. England are the defending champions having beaten New Zealand in a close final while they are also the T20 World champions, having won the title in 2022.

<h2>Gavaskar backs England</h2>

“The defending champions, England, because of the kind of talent that they have at, at the top of the order, the batting order, they've got two or three world-class all-rounders who can change the game with both bat and ball. They've also got a very good bowling line-up, an experienced bowling line-up, so at the moment in my book certainly,” said Gavaskar while speaking to Star Sports.

It is worth noting, that India will take on the defending champions on Saturday in their first warm-up game at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. A win for either side in the warm-up match will be a statement considering both have been in fluent form. India beat England in the three-match ODI series in July 2022, but plenty of water has gone under the bridge since as both will look to start the campaign on a high.

Both camps have been plagued with injuries with veteran stars returning to the fold for the World Cup. For India Ravichandran Ashwin will be in the squad having played only three matches during the last 18 months in ODI format. On the flip side, England also managed to bring back Ben Stokes out of retirement as he will be part of the squad.

India will start their World Cup campaign against five-time champions Australia in Chennai on Sunday, October 8 while England will take on New Zealand in the curtain-raiser on Thursday. The latter clash will be a repeat of the 2019 edition’s final as New Zealand will have a score to settle against Buttler’s army.

ODI World Cup 2023: Sunil Gavaskar backs Jos Buttler's England to defend title on Indian soil

The cricketing fraternity is eagerly waiting for the commencement of the ICC ODI World Cup, which gets underway on October 05 in Ahmedabad. The mega event will be held entirely in India. Many former cricketers and experts of the game have shared their predictions for the showpiece tournament. Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn, who ended his career with 439, 196 and 69 wickets in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively, has also predicted the finalists of the CWC 2023 edition.

Speaking on Star Sports ahead of the 2023 edition, Steyn said, "It’s a tough one, you know my heart wants to go with South Africa making the final. I would love them to make the final, their team, a lot of their players play in the IPL, they play in India regularly. They got some guys like in David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen who really started to figure out those conditions and bat well there. Then, there is KG Rabada who has been bowling there for ages and a lot of their other senior players have played a lot of cricket there. So I feel like they have got the ability to go on and get to the finals with getting those players."

"I feel like the favourites would probably be India, I feel like India is going to be one of the finalists and probably England. But my heart wants to say South Africa and India but I am kind of leaning towards India and England,” the former South Africa speedster&nbsp;added.

In the same discussion, ex-India fast-bowling all-rounder Irfan Pathan has also backed Temba Bavuma &amp; Co. He stated, "See, on logic you can’t drop England from the finalists spot because they have a very strong team, and the way they are playing cricket with their all-rounders like at number 9, they have an all-rounder batsmen like Chris Woakes, so I know that but I have a hunch in my heart which says that South Africa will do great in this World Cup."

South Africa will play two warm-up games -- on September 29 (Friday) versus Afghanistan and October 02 (Monday) versus New Zealand in&nbsp;Thiruvananthapuram -- before their CWC '23 opener versus Sri Lanka in New Delhi on October 07 (Saturday). The Proteas are entering the World Cup on the back of a stunning 3-2 ODI series win, at home, over Australia after trailing 0-2.

Not India vs Pakistan, South Africa vs Australia, England vs New Zealand! Steyn predicts CWC '23 finalists

In an effort to eliminate the possibility of franchise teams acquiring England's top cricketers, the England Cricket Board (ECB) has proposed special three-year contracts, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

The contracts are an update to the previous central contract structure, which only included one-year contracts, and they come at a time when Indian Premier League (IPL) ownership has expanded to other T20 tournaments around the world, allowing clubs to hire players exclusively for their needs all year long.

As per ESPNcricinfo, 26 contracts have been offered. The 20 contracts out of 26 are multi-year, with a group of top players including Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and Mark Wood in receipt of three-year packages.

The star pacer Jofra Archer could be in line for a three-year deal.

"It's certainly not negative, it kind of gives you a bit of security,"&nbsp; Ben Duckett was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"The security of players wanting to keep playing for England is perfect. For me the main thing is walking out and representing my country, it's not really a contract but that's a bonus," he added.

England's players will now decide whether to accept the contracts. While the basic remuneration has been agreed upon, those offered multiple years may request 12-month deals to give themselves greater flexibility.

These contracts, which will come into effect from the start of October, represent a significant step forward for the ECB after a month of back and forth with the England team. There will inevitably be kinks to iron out and disgruntled players who have narrowly missed out on the initial batch. But by and large, the situation is regarded as more beneficial, particularly for those who go on to sign lengthier contracts.

ECB likely to bring in multi-year contracts for England players

England made a hard decision to drop Jason Roy from the ODI World Cup squad despite selecting him in the provisional squad a month ago. The batsman, however, couldn't play the next four ODIs for England against New Zealand due to back spasms and lost his place in the team to Harry Brook.&nbsp;

England skipper Jos Buttler, speaking on Roy's omission, said that it was his responsibility to call the batsman and inform him about being dropped from the side.

"It was a really tough [phone] call to make," Buttler said to the PA news agency at a Castore event.

"I don't think any time is easy. It's part of the job as captain that is not enjoyable, whether they're great friends or not, it's not a nice job to do.

"I certainly feel like it's my responsibility to give that news. He's a really great mate of mine so it was a really tough call to make," added Buttler.

The England skipper, however, made it clear that Roy, the member of their 2019 World Cup wining team, will be a reserve batter for the squad but won't travel to India.

"Jason will be the top-order reserve, absolutely," Buttler said. "Harry, we do feel gives us versatility: he can cover Nos. 1 to 6 in the batting order, which is obviously something that's advantageous in a squad.

"But good players miss out, it's the very brutal nature of sport. There's plenty of people outside the 15 who will have felt that they were in with a really good chance of a spot.

"It's a bad headache to have but a good problem as a selection committee when you have a deep pool of players to choose from."

'Not a nice job to do': England skipper Jos Buttler on informing Jason Roy about his World Cup squad omission

From Nicholas Pooran to Jos Buttler: Five batters with most sixes in ODIs since CWC '19

Joe Root is gearing up for England's three-match ODI series opener versus Ireland, on September 20 (Wednesday) at Headingley, Leeds. The former England Test captain voluntarily added him to the squad for the first ODI&nbsp;as he needs more game time in the&nbsp;format ahead of the CWC 2023 edition, which kicks off with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad on October 05. Root's decision comes on the back of a horrible run in the four ODIs against New Zealand,&nbsp;at home, where he ended with scores of 6, 0, 4, and 29.

Ahead of the Ireland series, where Zak Crawley will lead a second-stringed side, England's regular captain Jos Buttler lauded Root's 'hunger to play' and backs him to regain form before CWC 2023.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Buttler said, "It just shows his hunger to play. He's someone who, over the last four years because of the schedule probably hasn't played as much 50-over cricket as he would like. He's an experienced guy and he knows what he needs. He's arguably the best player in our team and he just knows what he needs to get ready. It was very simple for all involved."

Meanwhile, England's chief selector Luke Wright also lauded Root for requesting for more game time and&nbsp;added, "It's great for someone to have that desire to keep wanting to do more. He just wanted a bit more time. It's a great thing for someone to still have that desire to keep wanting to do more and more. It shows where he's at with his game and what makes him such a world-class player that, when he doesn't feel quite right, he still wants to tinker and do more. As much as we probably thought he needed a break as well, he just wanted another go."

Root has batted only 16 times in ODIs since the 2019 World Cup, won by England in a thrilling final, at Lord's, versus the Black Caps. Hence, he is desperate to regain his rhythm before the upcoming ICC event in October-November.

England's final squad for the 2023 World Cup:&nbsp;Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.

Arguably best player in our team: England captain Jos Buttler lauds under-fire Joe Root ahead of CWC '23

Ben Stokes, who recently came out of ODI retirement for the upcoming 50-over World Cup in India, slammed a career-best 182 as England romped past New Zealand in the third and penultimate ODI at The Oval, London. Opting to bowl first, Tom Latham-led Kiwis made a bright start with the Jos Buttler-led hosts reeling at 13 for 2 before Stokes-Dawid Malan (96) stitched a match-winning 199-run third-wicket stand as England posted a mammoth 368 all-out in 48.1 overs. In reply, the Black Caps folded for a paltry 187 in 39 overs.

With the win, England have now taken an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series. For Stokes, he registered the highest individual score for England in the shorter format, going past opener Jason Roy's 180 versus Australia in early 2018. The left-hander has, thus, kicked off his second stint in the format in style ahead of the marquee event in India starting next month.&nbsp;

From NZ's perspective, their bowlers started off nicely but England's positive approach kept them at bay as they conceded runs at regular intervals. While they managed to restrict them under 370, courtesy of Trent Boult's 5 for 51, they were never in the hunt in the steep run-chase. Chris Woakes (3 for 31), Liam Livingstone (3 for 16) and Reece Topley (2 for 31) starred with the ball as England attained a massive win and went 2-1 up in the series.

After the match, Player-of-the-Match Stokes said at the post-match presentation, "Really pleased. Apologise to Jason (Jason Roy - for breaking his record of highest individual score for England). We spoke about putting New Zealand under pressure and get to a good start and even after losing those early wickets, we wanted to be positive."

He opined, "Once we got going, we didn't want them (bowlers) to settle. As experienced players, we need to guide the younger players. He (Malan) is a very consistent player, he is a very quality player, rotates the strike very well as well and missed out on the milestone after getting a strangle down leg. I'm feeling much better, Test matches are a bit longer but ODIs surely are not that demanding."

Meanwhile, captain Buttler stated, "Really pleased with the performance. Spoke at the toss about wanting to be more aggressive. Malan and Stokes had a brilliant partnership to put the pressure back on. There are levels we can keep achieving. There's more in the tank as well, which is exciting. That's the England way."

On Stokes, he added, "Stokesy's innings was incredibly special. Dawid's done brilliantly well everytime he's got his chance. That opening spell was as good as it gets from Woakes and Topley. Really pleased with today. Most important thing was that message of being aggressive. Feels we're heading in the right direction."

The fourth and final match takes place on Friday (September 15) at the&nbsp;Lord's Cricket Ground, London. Both sides will meet at the iconic venue for the first time in this format since&nbsp;the epic 2019 ODI World Cup final.&nbsp;

With the win, England have now taken an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series. For Stokes, he registered the highest individual score for England in the shorter format, going past opener Jason Roy's 180 versus Australia in early 2018. The left-hander has, thus, kicked off his second stint in the format in style ahead of the marquee event in India starting next month. Stokes stars with 182 in England's mammoth win vs New Zealand, hosts take unassailable 2-1 lead in ODI series

England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, is one of the modern-day’s most destructive batters. Having won two World Cups (one ODI, one T20) in three years, Buttler is referred to as a top player in world cricket. The right-hander, who has scored three ODI hundreds in less than 50 balls in each innings,&nbsp;is touted to be among the players to hit the most runs in the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023.

Currently playing his trade in England’s newest competition – The Hundred, Buttler is gearing up for a packed-away winter. England will face New Zealand in a home series before taking on Ireland and then flying to India for the ten-team marquee event starting October 5.

Speaking with ESPNcricinfo in an exclusive chat ahead of the New Zealand series, Buttler talked in detail about his favourite T20I and ODI knocks, and whom he looks forward to watching in white-ball cricket.&nbsp;

While for a batter who has scored ample hundreds across both formats at astonishing rates, choosing favourites could take some time, Buttler was quick to handpick his best outings.

He also revealed the names of three cricketers, including two active Indian batters, whom he loves to watch, picking their favourite shot.

Starting with his favourite T20 innings, Buttler said his hundred against Sri Lanka at Sharjah during the 2021 World Cup tops the chart. He also mentioned one IPL inning that stands out for him.

“The hundred in Sharjah [at the 2021 T20 World Cup] would definitely be one, especially in those sort of conditions. I found the first half of that inning very tough. I got 94 not out against Mumbai Indians in the 2018 IPL at the Wankhede - that's probably one of the best I have batted. I was in a nice run of form, and that was one of those days where things clicked,” Buttler told ESPNcricinfo.&nbsp;

On his best ODI knock, the England captain said,&nbsp;“The 116 in Dubai [vs. Pakistan in November 2015] is definitely one of my favourites. And then the hundred I got in Sydney [vs. Australia in January 2018]. That was one of the best I have played,” Buttler added.

<h2>Buttler loves to watch ‘these two Indian players’</h2>

Having played enough IPL cricket over the years and against India across several tours, Buttler knows more about Indian cricketers and what shots they love than most players from other countries.

When asked to handpick his favourite players and what shots from their collection&nbsp;he would like to adapt, Buttler said,

“Quinton de Kock - the way he picks it up off his legs. Rohit Sharma's pull shot. Rishabh Pant's mindset, that fearless [nature]. He's fun to watch,” he added.

Jos Buttler reveals his best T20I and ODI knocks, picks two Indians as favourites in white-ball cricket

England’s limited-overs skipper Jos Buttler has urged Harry Brook to not give up for a place in the national team for the ODI World Cup despite his omission from the squad. Brook, dropped for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, smashed a 41-ball ton in The Hundred as he made a statement to the selectors on Thursday, August 24. The sensational all-rounder was dropped from the England squad in favour of Ben Stokes, with the expectation of the same 15-member team set to feature in the World Cup.

<h2>Buttler urges Brook</h2>

"There's still a long time before everyone is meant to get on the plane, so we'll wait and see what happens," Buttler said after Brook’s statement hundred.

"We all know Harry's a fantastic player and we saw what he can do the other night. It's not like it's a surprise: we know what a brilliant player he is, he's just the unfortunate one at the moment to not be in that squad at the moment,” Buttler added.

Brook was a surprise exclusion from England’s team for the New Zealand series that could see him miss out on the World Cup. However, Buttler thinks there is still time for the Northern Superchargers man to come into the team as he has great potential to make a mark. The 24-year-old scored an unbeaten 105 from 42 deliveries against Welsh Fire.

Stokes has returned to the England side for the time in a year after initially announcing his retirement from the game. He will be part of the England squad for the New Zealand tour while he is all but guaranteed a place in the squad for the World Cup.

<h2>Ben Stokes in contention</h2>

"Of course, Ben Stokes coming back and being available just as a batter sort of changes the dynamic a little bit. Ben's a fantastic player to be able to welcome back, so it's a really tough selection."

England are hopeful of naming the same 15-member squad for the World Cup before the September 5 deadline. If this is the case Brook will miss out on a place in the team, having featured prominently in the T20 World Cup success in 2022 in Australia.

Jos Buttler urges Harry Brook not to give up on ODI World Cup berth, says 'there's still a long time to go'

Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has predicted the highest run-getter in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023&nbsp;being held in India. The forthcoming mega event will kick off in the subcontinent on October 05 with the defending champions Jos Buttler-led England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad whereas hosts Rohit Sharma-led India face Australia, in Chennai, on October 08.

Kallis, a legend who represented South Africa in 166 Tests, 328 ODIs and 25 T20Is, feels England captain Buttler will end up as the leading run-scorer in the upcoming edition. In the last edition, in England and Wales, Rohit Sharma ended with 648 runs -- most by any batter.

"I think Jos Butler will be the leading run scorer. An outside call, but I fancy him in those conditions. Along with England having a good World Cup, I think, um, me, he's going to be the one guy that stands up," said Kallis while speaking to the ICC.

Buttler has played 165 ODIs for the Three Lions, scoring&nbsp;4,647 runs at a strike rate of&nbsp;117.97 along with 11 tons and 24 fifties. He has a lot of experience of playing in India, thanks to his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he plays for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Overall, he&nbsp;has scored 3,223 runs from 96 IPL matches, at an impressive strike-rate of 148.32.&nbsp;

However, Buttler doesn't have a good ODI record in India -- having managed&nbsp;83 runs in eight matches so far at an average of&nbsp;11. Thus, he has a task to improve his record and help England successfully defend their title. The one-time winners have a plethora of superstars in their line-up, such as Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Moeen Ali, etc. Having already led England to the championship in his only ICC event as captain, during the 2022 T20 World Cup, Buttler will feel confident leading the English line-up in the upcoming big-ticket event.

Other batters who can end up as the highest run-getter in CWC '23 are Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Babar Azam, Quinton de Kock, David Warner, etc.

CWC '23: SA legend Jacques Kallis predicts THIS English star to be the leading run-getter

Ben Stokes deciding to unretire from ODIs and making himself available for selection for the upcoming World Cup 2023 was perhaps the best news of the week so far. Knowing what he brings to the table, England, who were already among the favourites for the title, will further fancy their chances of retaining the World Cup. ODI captain Jos Buttler, who, as per British media, played a role in convincing Stokes to return for the mega event, made a stunning revelation.

Speaking to the media for the first time since ECB roped in Stokes for the New Zealand ODIs and the World Cup 2023, Jos said Ben decided to come out of ODI retirement and help his team in the title defence in India.&nbsp;

Stokes retired from the 50-over format in 2022, citing ‘too much cricket’ as one of the reasons. A two-time World Cup winner with England (2019 – ODI, 2022 – T20) Stokes is a full-time Test captain and remains available for the T20I format.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, when asked to detail what happened behind the scene with Stokes, Buttler revealed knowing Ben, he decided himself instead of anyone persuading him – something that wouldn’t have worked in the first place.

"To be honest, it was Ben's call," Buttler said. "You all know Ben pretty well by now - I don't think anyone talking to him would persuade him."

"We had some conversations quite a while ago about it and just left it to him to come to me, basically, if he wanted to come back. We're delighted that he feels ready to come back, and any time you can welcome him back into the team is great,” Buttler added.

<h2>‘Ben takes his decisions’</h2>

Having revealed on several occasions earlier that he has no interest in returning to play the ODIs, Ben reversed his call in no time after the end of home Ashes, where ironically, he had asked Moeen Ali to come out of retirement, which he did and played the Ashes.

Talking about Stokes, Buttler said Ben takes his decisions, and although both did have some conversations around it, Buttler said he left the ball in Stokes’ court, only for him to agree in the end.

"Ben is very much his own man; he makes his own decisions. I've played with him for a very long time, I'm good friends with him. Me badgering him and saying 'come back, come back' is not really the way things work with Ben. He very much makes up his own mind and decides."

"We had some conversations around it and just left it in his court. I'm sure the lure of playing in a World Cup is quite big for someone as competitive and as driven as he is to play in an England shirt. I'm delighted he felt up to it and could come back,” Buttler said.&nbsp;

Coming out of ODI retirement was Ben Stokes’ call, persuading him wouldn't have helped: Jos Buttler

There were strong rumours&nbsp;this weekend that England's white-ball captain Jos Buttler is set to talk to his Test counterpart Ben Stokes to convince him to reverse his ODI retirement call for the forthcoming World Cup, in India. Well, it looks like the English Test skipper is ready to make a U-turn and come out of 50-over retirement for the ICC event.&nbsp;As per fresh reports, Stokes is now considering to come out of ODI retirement&nbsp;if asked by white-ball skipper Buttler.

According to a report in Telegraph Sport, Stokes if willing to risk missing IPL 2024 if he needs ample recovery time in his schedule. He represents the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the premier tournament in India.

It is to be noted that the all-rounder called it quits from the shorter format in July 2022, citing&nbsp;‘exhaustion due to too much cricket’. While he was asked about a return in ODIs during the recently-held Ashes 2023, in the United Kingdom, the 32-year-old gave a fitting response.

"I'm retired," Stokes reiterated, as quoted by the ICC. "I'm going on holiday after this game and that's as far as I'm thinking."

However, he had a different view after starring in England's T20 World Cup 2022 final win, over Pakistan, with a gritty 52* at the MCG, Melbourne last November. Back then,&nbsp;he was asked if he is inclined to return to the ODI format.

To this, Stokes&nbsp;stated, "… who knows how I might feel towards a World Cup at the time. Going to a World Cup is an amazing thing to do, to represent your country. But at the moment I'm not even thinking about that."

England's white-ball coach Matthew Mott recently opened up on Stokes' ODI future&nbsp;and told Mail Sport, "Jos (Buttler) will probably lead the way on that communication, but Ben's pretty straight with all of us. It will be interesting to see if Stokes features&nbsp;in&nbsp;the 50-over mega event in India, which kicks off on October 05 with England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Recently, England's spin-bowling all-rounder Moeen Ali came out of Test retirement for Ashes 2023 and played a pivotal role for Stokes &amp; Co. in the five games which ended in a&nbsp;2-2 stalemate versus Australia.

There were strong rumours this weekend that England's white-ball captain Jos Buttler is set to talk to his Test counterpart Ben Stokes to convince him to reverse his ODI retirement call for the forthcoming World Cup, in India.

There were strong rumours this weekend that England's white-ball captain Jos Buttler is set to talk to his Test counterpart Ben Stokes to convince him to reverse his ODI retirement call for the forthcoming World Cup, in India. Well, it looks like the English Test skipper is ready to make a U-turn and come out of 50-over retirement for the ICC event. As per fresh reports, Stokes is now considering to come out of ODI retirement if asked by white-ball skipper Buttler. According to a report in Telegraph Sport, Stokes if willing to risk missing IPL 2024 if he needs ample recovery time in his schedule. He represents the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the premier tournament in India. It is to be noted that the all-rounder called it quits from the shorter format in July 2022, citing ‘exhaustion due to too much cricket’. While he was asked about a return in ODIs during the recently-held Ashes 2023, in the United Kingdom, the 32-year-old gave a fitting response. "I'm retired," Stokes reiterated, as quoted by the ICC. "I'm going on holiday after this game and that's as far as I'm thinking." However, he had a different view after starring in England's T20 World Cup 2022 final win, over Pakistan, with a gritty 52* at the MCG, Melbourne last November. Back then, he was asked if he is inclined to return to the ODI format. To this, Stokes stated, "… who knows how I might feel towards a World Cup at the time. Going to a World Cup is an amazing thing to do, to represent your country. But at the moment I'm not even thinking about that." We will see if he's keen. There has not been a clear direction on what he's going to do yet, but we are still hopeful. I've always said his bowling would be a bonus, but just look at what he brings with the bat, even in the field." England's Ben Stokes set to come out of retirement for World Cup 2023 - Reports

England white-ball captain Jos Buttler is said to be speaking with Ben Stokes and requesting him to reverse his retirement call for the upcoming World Cup 2023, as England will announce the 15-man squad for the mega event soon. As per a report in the British media, England camp is keen on bringing Stokes on board for the 10-team tournament despite the Test skipper stating he will not return to playing ODIs again.

Stokes, who led England’s charge in the 2019 WC Final against New Zealand, playing an unbelievable knock, retired from the 50-over format the last year, citing ‘exhaustion due to too much cricket’ as the major reason. Though he continues to play in the shortest format, Stokes is now a full-time Test captain.

Matthew Mott, England’s white-ball coach, feels though Ben had cleared his intentions earlier, the camp is hopeful of a reversal on his ODI retirement.

"Jos (Buttler) will probably lead the way on that communication, but Ben's pretty straight with all of us. We will see if he's keen. There has not been a clear direction on what he's going to do yet, but we are still hopeful. I've always said his bowling would be a bonus, but just look at what he brings with the bat, even in the field," Mott told Mail Sport.

Mott said that given how Stokes performed in the recently-concluded Ashes, which ended in the Oz retaining the urn, his presence made all the difference on the field for the hosts. For what he brings to the table as a batter, a bowler, an exciting fielder, and, more importantly, as a leader with experience on his back, Stokes is an asset for any team in any format.

"Watching him throughout the whole Ashes series, he had such a great presence. He's done it for years when it comes to performing in one-day cricket, and so he's an invaluable commodity," Mott added.

<h2>Stokes-less England ready for title defence</h2>

The defending world champions are upbeat about their chances of retaining the World Cup in India. Possessing one of the most lethal white-ball sides in the world, England has a real chance of doing a West Indies (of 1975, 1979) and Australia (1999-2007) this time.

While the attention of the world is on the ODI World Cup and the qualifiers, RR have secretly turned their attention to Jos Buttler as they plan to keep him for another four years with the team. According to a report, the franchise is set to offer a four-year lucrative deal to Buttler having shined for the side in the IPL.

<h2>Buttler set for big contract</h2>

Buttler, 32, led England to their second T20 World Cup success in 2022 and had a stellar year with the IPL franchise as well. Buttler won the Orange Cap in the 2022 season and led the franchise to their first final in 14 years of the IPL in 2022. <h2>Buttler’s IPL heroics</h2>

Astonishingly, he scored four IPL hundreds in 2022 along with four fifties with a best of 116. However, the 2023 IPL season was below-par for him as he ended with just 392 runs from 14 matches while scoring four fifties. RR also failed to reach the playoffs of the IPL having faced elimination after the final league game.

Away from the spotlight of the Ashes 2023, Buttler will be a key member of the England squad for the ODI World Cup. He will lead the side in the championship&nbsp;in India and could become just the second captain to win both the ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup after MS Dhoni of India. England, under Buttler, will enter the ODI World Cup in India as the defending champions, having got the better of New Zealand in the 2019 showdown.

<h2>The final slump</h2>

Buttler, however, gave an indication of coming back to form at the time Royals needed it the most as he scored 95 and SRH in 11th game of the season. The hope although was short-lived as the 95th run against Hyderabad became Buttler's last run of the regular season.

Buttler admitted to Level 1 Offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct, while it is speculated that an instance after that run-out must have led to the breach. ALSO READ: IPL 2023: Yashasvi Jaiswal dazzles at Eden Gardens as RR crush KKR by nine wickets “Mr. Buttler admitted to the Level 1 Offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the IPL Governing Council said in a statement past midnight. What is the Level 1 Offence under Article 2.2? Meanwhile, in the case of level 1 offence, the match referee’s decision is final. Jaiswal steals the show at Eden Gardens During the RR inning, it was Buttler who sacrificed his wicket for the young Jaiswal, who went on to score the fastest fifty in the tournament’s history off just 13 balls. Jaiswal's second-best score this season – 98* from 47 also helped RR chase down a modest 150 in just 13.1 overs with nine wickets in hand. In the next couple of overs, he hit a few fours and sixes and brought his fifty off just 13 balls – breaking KL Rahul’s record of a 14-ball fifty against Delhi Capitals in Mohali. Jaiswal decided against putting brakes on his inning and accompanying him on the other end, Sanju Samson also joined the party with a quickfire 29 from 48 balls, including five sixes and two fours. Jaiswal’s knock earned him praise from all across, with former India coach Ravi Shastri saying the young batter could make his India debut soon. Also, with the win, RR has climbed to the third spot on the points table with 12 points from as many games. For RR to qualify for the playoffs, they need to win their remaining two matches in the group stage. (With inputs from agencies)

IPL 2023: Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler fined 10% of match fee for breaching code of conduct

Rohit Sharma has only managed 184 runs in 10 innings for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2023 edition. The right-hander has only managed one fifty-plus score (65) and got dismissed for cheap more often than not. The 36-year-old has looked for early runs but throwed his wicket as he has five single-digit scores in this year's IPL, with him failing to open his account in the last two encounters.

Rohit has scores of 0, 0, 3 and 2&nbsp;in his last four outings before MI gear up to host the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in match 54 of IPL 2023 on Tuesday evening (May 09). After Jos Buttler's magnificent 95, off 59 balls, in Rajasthan Royals (RR)'s shocking loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in match 52 on Sunday evening (May 7), former New Zealand all-rounder-turned-commentator Scott Styris asked Rohit to take a leaf out of Buttler's book to regain form and rhythm.&nbsp;

Before his knock versus SRH, Buttler didn't have a great outing in his previous few games after a promising start. However, the Englishman returned to his scoring ways after taking some time in the initial overs in the RR-SRH tie in Jaipuir. Thus, Styris said on Jio Cinema on Sunday, "When you think about Jos Buttler, he is a player who knows he has the power game to comeback (after a slow start). We have been talking about it for a few games that Rohit Sharma needs to take a leaf out of that book. Exactly the innings that he should look to play. Take 20 balls and then go through the gears because Rohit Sharma is a talented man like Jos Buttler. Buttler showed maturity for Rajasthan."

Speaking about Buttler's interview with the broadcasters after his knock, Styris pointed out, "His interview was brilliant. It gave us an insight into his methodology and his thought process. He said he hadn’t quite got into his rhythm, he did not use the word form but he said he did not have rhythm with the way he had been playing in the last few games. He said he put his ego to the side and worked his way until he felt he could start going after the bowlers."

Rohit has scores of 0, 0, 3 and 2 in his last four outings before MI gear up to host the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in match 54 of IPL 2023 on Tuesday evening (May 09). After Jos Buttler's magnificent 95, off 59 balls, in Rajasthan Royals (RR)'s shocking loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in match 52 on Sunday evening (May 7), former New Zealand all-rounder-turned-commentator Scott Styris asked Rohit to take a leaf out of Buttler's book to regain form and rhythm. Buttler showed maturity for Rajasthan." Also Read: IPL 2023: Abdul Samad's last-ball six pulls off a miracle win for SunRisers Hyderabad against RR in Jaipur Speaking about Buttler's interview with the broadcasters after his knock, Styris pointed out, "His interview was brilliant. It gave us an insight into his methodology and his thought process. He said he hadn’t quite got into his rhythm, he did not use the word form but he said he did not have rhythm with the way he had been playing in the last few games. He said he put his ego to the side and worked his way until he felt he could start going after the bowlers." At present, Rohit-led MI occupy the sixth position in the IPL 2023 points table with five wins and equal number of defeats in ten games.

IPL 2023: 'Rohit should take a leaf out of Buttler's book' - Former NZ all-rounder on MI captain's form

Abdul Samad’s last-ball six pulled off the highest successful run-chase for SunRisers Hyderabad as they hunted down 215 against Rajasthan Royals with four wickets in hand.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first looked like the best call for Rajasthan Royals. The batter in hottest form, Yashasvi Jaiswal, started from where he left, leaving everyone, including the commentators in awe of his game. His partner, and perhaps the best T20I batter, Jos Buttler, finally found his lost mojo as he smashed the bowlers to all parts of the ground.&nbsp;

Following Jaiswal’s wicket inside the Powerplay, captain Sanju Samson joined Buttler in the middle, and what happened next turned heads all over. Both made sure they put up a show worth remembering for all the viewers as they stitched a 138-run stand that saw Buttler approaching his first hundred of the season.

He, however, fell shy of the three-digit score by just four runs as Bhuvneshwar Kumar trapped him in the middle on a well-made 96. Sanju remained unbeaten on 66 from 38 balls, hitting four fours and five sixes as Rajasthan scored a daunting 214 for two in 20 overs.

SunRisers Hyderabad – whose batting unit hasn’t clicked this season, brought in the impact player Anmolpreet Singh alongside Abhishek Sharma to open the innings. Anmol had the run rate going for them, scoring 33 before Yuzvendra Chahal picked him in his first over.&nbsp;

Promising Abhishek Sharma delivered with the bat again as he completed his second fifty of IPL 2023. A strong partnership with Rahul Tripathi kept SRH in the chase. Ravi Ashwin, RR’s best bowler, then accounted for Abhishek’s wicket as he got out on 55 from 34 balls.

South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen joined in and went about his business straightaway. As he looked like taking the game away from the hosts, Chahal, with a flighted delivery, picked him up on 26 from 12 balls. Tripathi, who then took the onus on himself, hit a few boundaries before falling prey to Chahal’s deceiving flight that helped him bag his third wicket of the night.&nbsp;He added one more to kitty by removing SRH captain Aiden Markram just two balls later.

New Zealand’s Glenn Philips, who replaced Harry Brook in the XI, made all the difference as he hit 22 runs from the 19th over to bring the equation to 19 from seven balls. It took an incredible effort from Shimron Hetmyer in the outfield to dismiss him.

The drama unfolded in the final over as SunRisers Hyderabad pulled off their highest-ever run-chase in IPL. With five needed&nbsp;off the last ball, Sandeep Sharma dismissed Abdul Samad, caught in the deep long-off, only to discover that he overstepped. With four now required off the last ball, Samad smashed one over Sandeep's head to hand his team a famous win by four wickets.

IPL 2023: Abdul Samad's last-ball six pulls off a miracle win for SunRisers Hyderabad against RR in Jaipur

Rajasthan Royals faced a reality check after they crumbled for 118 against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In the repeat of the last year’s IPL final, RR and GT were expected to stage a mouth-watering clash but the likes of Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler failed to deliver against a resolute GT attack led by Rashid Khan as he scalped three wickets.

<h2>RR face reality check</h2>

Having opted to bat first in the challenging conditions of Jaipur, the decision backfired on skipper Sanju Samson as they lost wickets at regular intervals despite a decent start. RR lost Buttler (8) in the second over but they recovered well with Samson (30) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (11) and were 47/1. However, GT was struck with venom as Jaiswal and Samson were dismissed in quick succession which led to a horrible collapse.

Soon RR were 77/6 and looked dead and out as the triple-figure mark looked out of reach for them. A decent knock from Trent Boult (15) helped RR reach the 100-run mark and mount a decent challenge. In the entire innings, only four batters entered double figures before they lost way to get bowled out for 118.

Rashid Khan was the chief destructor for RR as he scalped three wickets while his Afghanistan colleague Noor Ahmad ended with two wickets as well. Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya and Joshua Little all scalped a wicket to break the RR back.

With points looking out of hand, RR will look forward to the next game when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Sunday, May 7 before they take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). On the flip side, GT will take on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday while Mumbai Indians await them on Friday.

IPL 2023: RR face reality-check as Buttler, Samson crumble against champs GT in own backyard

Royal Challengers Bangalore bowler Mohammed Siraj is in top form this IPL season with 12 wickets in six matches and bowled RR's Jos Buttler for his 13th wicket in Royals' first over of the chase.

The bowl was full and straight angling in with Buttler's feet not moving at all. The bowl came in bit and snuck past the gap between Buttler's bat and pad, uprooting the middle stump. Have a look at the video here:

IPL 2023: Mohammed Siraj clean bowls Jos Buttler with a jaffa in RCB vs RR - WATCH

Virat Kohli has so far scored two fifties in three games for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2023. The three-time runners-up will rely on Kohli throughout the season as they look to end their IPL-trophy drought this time around in IPL 2023. In 2016 edition, the then RCB skipper Kohli was in sublime form as he ended with a whopping 973 runs in 16 games -- including four centuries - as he took his franchise to the final, where they lost to the eventual champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Kohli's 973 runs remains the most scored by a batter in any IPL season. Recently, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri named India's young star Shubman Gill, who represents the one-time winners Gujarat Titans (GT), to break Kohli's massive IPL record.&nbsp;

Speaking during a Q/A session on&nbsp;Star Sports, Shastri said, "He has to be an opening batsman, because only then will he get many opportunities to score runs. I feel it is Shubman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays at the top of the order. So he will get a good number of opportunities to score runs."

Shastri further opined, "The pitches are good, so if he can score 80-100 runs consecutively in two or three innings, then at that point only he will already have 300-400 runs.

"According to me, it is very difficult to break the record, because 900-plus runs is huge. But one thing is opening batsmen will get two extra matches and two extra innings, so they can only break this record if it is possible", he&nbsp;added.

Gill has so far scored 116 runs, including a fifty, at a strike rate of 145. Meanwhile, Gill-starrer GT have won twice and lost a game after three encounters as they occupy the fourth spot in the points table.&nbsp;

Will in-form Gill break Kohli's record in IPL 2023 or the upcoming seasons? Only time will tell...

In 2016 edition, the then RCB skipper Kohli was in sublime form as he ended with a whopping 973 runs in 16 games -- including four centuries - as he took his franchise to the final, where they lost to the eventual champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Kohli's 973 runs remains the most scored by a batter in any IPL season. Recently, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri named India's young star Shubman Gill, who represents the one-time winners Gujarat Titans (GT), to break Kohli's massive IPL record. Speaking during a Q/A session on Star Sports, Shastri said, "He has to be an opening batsman, because only then will he get many opportunities to score runs. I feel it is Shubman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays at the top of the order. So he will get a good number of opportunities to score runs." Also Read: 'From 42 to 50...' - After Babar, Doull slams Virat Kohli for being 'concerned about personal milestone' Shastri further opined, "The pitches are good, so if he can score 80-100 runs consecutively in two or three innings, then at that point only he will already have 300-400 runs. "According to me, it is very difficult to break the record, because 900-plus runs is huge. But one thing is opening batsmen will get two extra matches and two extra innings, so they can only break this record if it is possible", he added. Gill has so far scored 116 runs, including a fifty, at a strike rate of 145. Meanwhile, Gill-starrer GT have won twice and lost a game after three encounters as they occupy the fourth spot in the points table. Will in-form Gill break Kohli's record in IPL 2023 or the upcoming seasons? Only time will tell...

Not Dhawan or Buttler! Shastri names THIS Indian youngster who can break Kohli's 973-run IPL record

Three wickets each to Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal helped Rajasthan Royals beat Delhi Capitals by 57 runs in game 11th of IPL 2023 on Saturday. While DC skipper David Warner entered record books with his 65 off 55 ball-inning, he still couldn’t see his team through in Guwahati.&nbsp;

Asked to bat first after losing the toss, Rajasthan Royals, for the second time in two games, got off to a flyer with both openers Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal completing a 50-run stand inside the Powerplay. More so that the young Jaiswal even hammered Khaleel Ahmed for five fours in his first over.&nbsp;

The pair added 98 for the first wicket as Jaiswal completed his successive fifty, scoring 60 off 31 balls this time, that included 11 fours and a six. Later,&nbsp;two quick wickets might have pulled things back for the hosts, they still managed to stay on top of Delhi. With an excellent cameo of 39 off 21 balls from Shimron Hetmyer and 79 off 51 deliveries from Jos Buttler, Rajasthan posted a handsome total of 199 for four in 20 overs.

Much like how they began in the first innings, RR was all over DC with the start they got in the second innings – with Trent Boult removing Prithvi Shaw and Manish Pandey out on zero in the first over. Rilee Rossouw also lost his wicket to Ravi Ashwin inside the Powerplay.&nbsp;Captain David Warner and right-handed batter Lalit Yadav stitched a 66-run stand for the fourth wicket, but that didn’t count for much as Delhi lost wickets in a cluster in the middle overs.&nbsp;

Veteran Warner kept going alone on one end as he created history by becoming the quickest (in terms of innings) and third overall batter to complete 6000 runs in IPL in his 165th inning.&nbsp;

In the end, he scored 65 as Delhi fell short of the target by 57 runs. With this., they lost their third game in a row and are sitting in the bottom half of the points table.

IPL 2023: Trent Boult, openers see Rajasthan Royals home despite Warner's record-breaking outing

Not everything is going right for certain franchises as both Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals are set to be without their key players for the coming days in the Indian Premier League.&nbsp; According to several reports, Jos Buttler of Rajasthan Royals and Mitchell Marsh of Delhi Capitals will miss the upcoming clashes for two different reasons.

<h2>Buttler out with injury</h2>

The England limited-overs captain was the recipient of the Orange Cap in 2022 with 863 runs but will likely have to warm the bench for Rajasthan against Delhi due to an injury. Buttler, injured his finger while taking a catch in the contest against Punjab Kings on Wednesday. Buttler sustained the injury while taking the catch of Punjab Kings batsman Shahrukh Khan and had to undergo multiple stitches.

The injury forced him to sit out of the batting duties and therefore Ravichandran Ashwin was promoted to open the innings. However, the experiment failed and resulted in Buttler batting in the second over, but failed to make an impression as he was unable to bat at his 100 percent.

Delhi Capital’s star man Mitchell Marsh is also reported to be out for a week, but not with injury. It is reported that he will be getting married. Marsh will get married in Australia and will miss a week out while it will be an opportunity for someone to fill in. Rovman Powell could be back in the team, as there are suggestions he might have to sit out of the team.

"He [Marsh] is not going to be available for the next few games. He is getting married," Hopes told the media ahead of the Capitals clash with Royals in Guwahati.

The clash between Delhi and Rajasthan will take place on Saturday, April 8 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. After Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals will take on Mumbai Indians in Delhi on Tuesday and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru on April 15.
