<p>As the engine of the <em>Fast &amp; Furious</em> roars once again with <em>Fast X,</em> the question looms larger than ever: &nbsp;just how many more movies are we in for? The question, of course, is rhetorical. I know there will be least one more movie. The franchise ran out of gas several movies ago and has been running on fumes ever since. I don’t want to sound like a broken record and say that <em>Fast X</em> sucks. Not saying it doesn't (it does). But chances are if you are willingly watching the movie (unlike me, a critic, who has to watch it only to tell you how bad it is) you like the franchise. And since <em>Fast X </em>is much better than the simply unwatchable mess that was <em>F9</em>, It is perhaps a given that you will enjoy this movie.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If that is the case, you might as well stop reading this and rush to your nearest theatre. If you are like me, however, and cannot come to terms with the fact that these movies have millions of fans who love them wholly unironically, well, read on.</p>

<h2><strong><em>Fast &amp; Furious</em>: From humble origins to a globally-popular film franchise</strong></h2>

<p>The series, which began as a humble street racing film back in 2001, has evolved into a global blockbuster phenomenon. Its combination of action, charismatic actors, and over-the-top visuals has clearly struck a chord with many around the world. With each new instalment, F&amp;F has become increasingly divorced from reality, stretching the boundaries of plausibility to the point of absurdity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It became so ridiculous after a point that those in charge embraced the criticism that these films have no regard for the laws of physics. Now, they just do not care and continue to churn out more and more mind-bogglingly impossible action scenes. And since there is a large audience for those, the dollars keep coming.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nobody goes to space in<em> Fast X</em>, so that is a plus.</p>

<h2><strong>What is <em>Fast X</em> about?</strong></h2>

<p>Once again, a ghost from the past comes to haunt Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel, who looked as tired as me). This time it is not an estranged brother, but a man called Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa, perhaps the only good thing about this film) who blames Dom, not without reason, for killing his father. That is the story. That is <em>Fast X</em>. Rest is filler. Oh, and we hear Dom say things about protecting the FAMILY and other members of the said FAMILY also get to do cool stuff, and there are a couple of cameos. But by and large, that is the story.</p>

<p>Like every villain standing opposite Dom, Dante is super-strong and super-smart. He soon gets his army of soldiers and tech wizards from Cipher after he threatens to kill the family members of those men. But if he were working alone, who did he get to do those kidnappings? But who am I kidding? This is not that kind of film, where you stop to think about stuff. It will only erode any enjoyment you might have had.</p>

<p>Anyway, Dante not only desires Dom's demise but also wishes to subject him and his FAMILY to immense suffering before delivering the fatal blow. This motivation is only there to explain why he does not kill his main foe, the man with whom he has nursed hatred for who knows how many years, when he gets so many chances.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>So... is <em>Fast X </em>worth watching?</strong></h2>

<p>If you are a fan of the series and enjoy the extravagant action, charismatic characters, and disregard for realism that the franchise is known for, then you may find entertainment value in <em>Fast X.</em> Despite its flaws, it offers the same familiar elements that have attracted a dedicated fan base.</p>

<p>I don't wish to sound condescending, but I like something more in my cinema. Like: an underlying depth, thought-provoking themes, and nuanced storytelling. Sure, there is space for mindless action and fun in every movie, but that should be a part of the movie —not the movie itself.</p>

<p>The movie's story is lacklustre, and at one point it appeared that it was satirising its own genre and engaging in some self-referential humour. But no, it remained unapologetically serious until the very end. The characters stop to punch, shoot and slam only to deliver trite phrases like "You will never be able to break my family" and "Time to end this" with unwavering sincerity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The acting is terrible too, though many of these actors, I believe, are capable of better. Except for Diesel, of course. He is just bad. He sticks like a sore thumb compared to better performers that inhabit the cast. "I’m coming for you, son!", he tells his boy in the same tone he uses for his enemies when he is coming to get them. For most of the movie, he sports an expression that is somewhere between a full-fledged frown and a stoic indifference (it is hard to tell!) — from which I gathered he was either concerned about his FAMILY or was not bothered that his latest enemy is quite clever.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson are fine in their banter and instill a bit of much-needed wit. Momoa, though, is the only one who I loved watching. Playing against the type, he injects the film with a much-needed dose of energy. Charming and charismatic, Dante has hobbies that range from harmless feminine ones like elaborate hairdos and flashy tunics to painting the toenails of his victims (who are posed in deckchairs with mojitos in hand).</p>

<p>Dante is not interesting in relation to Dom, since his motivations are nothing novel, but he is indeed fun to watch in himself.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong><em>Fast X </em>is a step-up from <em>F9</em>, but does that matter?</strong></h2>

<p>The only fun I had from <em>Fast X </em>was a perverse kind of fun. I imagined that it looks like the actors and director had to live through gruelling production in multiple countries. It is better than <em>F9</em>, but that is like saying you prefer a stubbed toe to a broken leg. In both cases, you are longing for relief.</p>

Now, they just do not care and continue to churn out more and more mind-bogglingly impossible action scenes. And since there is a large audience for those, the dollars keep coming. Nobody goes to space in Fast X, so that is a plus. What is Fast X about? Once again, a ghost from the past comes to haunt Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel, who looked as tired as me). This time it is not an estranged brother, but a man called Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa, perhaps the only good thing about this film) who blames Dom, not without reason, for killing his father. That is the story. That is Fast X. Rest is filler. Oh, and we hear Dom say things about protecting the FAMILY and other members of the said FAMILY also get to do cool stuff, and there are a couple of cameos. But by and large, that is the story. Like every villain standing opposite Dom, Dante is super-strong and super-smart. He soon gets his army of soldiers and tech wizards from Cipher after he threatens to kill the family members of those men. But if he were working alone, who did he get to do those kidnappings? But who am I kidding? This is not that kind of film, where you stop to think about stuff. It will only erode any enjoyment you might have had. Anyway, Dante not only desires Dom's demise but also wishes to subject him and his FAMILY to immense suffering before delivering the fatal blow. This motivation is only there to explain why he does not kill his main foe, the man with whom he has nursed hatred for who knows how many years, when he gets so many chances. So... is Fast X worth watching? If you are a fan of the series and enjoy the extravagant action, charismatic characters, and disregard for realism that the franchise is known for, then you may find entertainment value in Fast X. Despite its flaws, it offers the same familiar elements that have attracted a dedicated fan base. I don't wish to sound condescending, but I like something more in my cinema. Like: an underlying depth, thought-provoking themes, and nuanced storytelling. Sure, there is space for mindless action and fun in every movie, but that should be a part of the movie —not the movie itself. The movie's story is lacklustre, and at one point it appeared that it was satirising its own genre and engaging in some self-referential humour. But no, it remained unapologetically serious until the very end. The characters stop to punch, shoot and slam only to deliver trite phrases like "You will never be able to break my family" and "Time to end this" with unwavering sincerity. The acting is terrible too, though many of these actors, I believe, are capable of better. Except for Diesel, of course. He is just bad. He sticks like a sore thumb compared to better performers that inhabit the cast. "I’m coming for you, son!", he tells his boy in the same tone he uses for his enemies when he is coming to get them. For most of the movie, he sports an expression that is somewhere between a full-fledged frown and a stoic indifference (it is hard to tell!) — from which I gathered he was either concerned about his FAMILY or was not bothered that his latest enemy is quite clever. Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson are fine in their banter and instill a bit of much-needed wit. Momoa, though, is the only one who I loved watching. Playing against the type, he injects the film with a much-needed dose of energy. Charming and charismatic, Dante has hobbies that range from harmless feminine ones like elaborate hairdos and flashy tunics to painting the toenails of his victims (who are posed in deckchairs with mojitos in hand). Dante is not interesting in relation to Dom, since his motivations are nothing novel, but he is indeed fun to watch in himself. Fast X is a step-up from F9, but does that matter? The only fun I had from Fast X was a perverse kind of fun. I imagined that it looks like the actors and director had to live through gruelling production in multiple countries. It is better than F9, but that is like saying you prefer a stubbed toe to a broken leg. In both cases, you are longing for relief. The Hawaiian-born A-lister narrates 'Deep Rising', a new documentary about the frenzied efforts by resource-hungry corporations to scrape valuable metals from vast swathes of the Pacific floor.</p>

<p>Supporters of deep-sea mining claim that pellets of nickel and cobalt -- used in electric car batteries -- can be conveniently scooped off the seabed, helping reduce our fossil fuel reliance.</p>

<p>But conservation groups and scientists fear this could devastate poorly understood marine systems that play a crucial role in regulating the climate, and some nations have called for bans.</p>

<p>"There are moments where I cried and got emotional" narrating the film, Momoa told AFP, before its world premiere at the festival in Utah.</p>

<p>"It's very important, to use your power for good. It's all the things I'm passionate about," added the actor, who took marine biology courses as a student, and is a UN Environment Program advocate for the oceans.</p>

<p>The documentary follows key players in the fledgling industry including The Metals Company, a Canadian group pushing to mine the Clarion Clipperton Zone -- a vast expanse of the seafloor near Hawaii.</p>

<p>The film goes behind the scenes as its chief executive Gerard Barron courts wealthy investors with promises that little harm will be done to "the most barren, desolate part of the planet," in contrast to the devastation that ongoing mining is causing rainforests.</p>

<p>But 'Deep Rising' director Matthieu Rytz told AFP that "we know so little" about the real risk to the deep ocean.</p>

<p>"Extraction on the seafloor, it's just a rush, because we don't have enough science to really understand what's happening there," he said.</p>

<p>Still, The Metals Company has said it expects to be mining 10 million tons of material from the ocean floor every year, starting in 2025.</p>

<p>And it is just one of about 20 research institutes or corporations that hold ocean exploration contracts, awaiting the go-ahead to begin commercial-scale mining.</p>

<p>Rytz's film argues that the energy crisis has no "silver bullet," and that the brewing race to harvest critical metals is not a solution but "the new oil," and could trigger future resource wars.</p>

<p>It shows meetings of the International Seabed Authority, described by Rytz as an "obscure room in Kingston, Jamaica" where delegates decide "the future of 65 per cent of the planet's surface."</p>

<p>"This is beyond national jurisdiction. It's the high seas," said Rytz."It belongs to all of us or none of us."</p>

<p>Rytz speaks in the film with scientists who argue that alternative clean, more abundant energy sources such as hydrogen should be explored for car engines, or that transport options such as high-speed rail should be expanded.</p>

<p>Hollywood actor Jason Momoa is now a pet parent to an adorable pig! The 43-year-old has been sharing videos with the new member of his family since early Monday morning on social media. In the clips, he is seen holding the pig in his hands and introducing his Instafam to his new friend.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In one of his posts, Momoa revealed that he got the pig from 'Slumberland' sets and shared that he doesn't prefer working with animals because he ends up wanting to get them home. For those unaware, 'Slumberland' is based on the comic strip 'Little Nemo in Slumberland' and it revolves around the character Nemo who has a stuffed pig that comes alive at night.</p>

<p>Momoa has been roped in to play&nbsp;a magical character in the film who helps a young girl travel through dreams and flee nightmares in order to reunite with her deceased father,&nbsp;according to the film's synopsis.</p>

<p>Sharing video on his official Instagram handle on Monday, Momoa wrote, "My new friend LAU LAU. or MANAPUA. we haven’t decided yet. this is why i can’t work with animals i want to bring them home. wild and feral like his pops. aloha j. (sic)" Check it out below.</p>

<p>'Aquaman' star Jason Momoa has become the latest Hollywood celebrity to throw his support behind Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brazil's knife-edge election, joining Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and 'Star Wars'&nbsp;actor Mark Hamill.</p>

<p>Lula, Brazil's leftist former president, is facing off against far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, whose policies have been blamed for rampant destruction of the Amazon rainforest.</p>

<p>Momoa, 43, took to Instagram on Monday, posting hearts over a news headline showing Lula's lead widening over Bolsonaro as the pair head into Sunday's all-important run-off.</p>

<p>Fellow superhero actor Mark Ruffalo, who stars as the Hulk in Marvel's 'Avengers'&nbsp;franchise, last month released a video endorsing Lula.</p>

<p>He urged Brazilians to think of the "global implication to your election" with regards to the Amazon rainforest and its role in helping fight climate change.</p>

<p>"What happens to the rainforest and Indigenous people that are there will impact the rest of the world for millennia to come," said Ruffalo.</p>

<p>He added: "Right now, the leader that's best positioned to protect the rainforest is Lula."</p>

<p>With just days to go until the October 30 vote, the two bitter rivals are scrambling to win over undecided voters in a historically tight race.</p>

<p>Lula has 52 percent of the vote heading into the runoff, to 48 percent for Bolsonaro, according to a recent poll.</p>

<p>Momoa is the latest celebrity to come out against Bolsonaro, whose tenure has been marked by increased deforestation, more logging and the supplanting of Indigenous people in the Amazon.</p>

<p>Ahead of the first round of elections, Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill tweeted "The future is YOURS, Brasil", along with a caricature of the former president captioned "Lula Skywalker".</p>

<p>Leonardo DiCaprio, who has a long track record of environmentalism, has encouraged Brazilians to vote, citing the importance of the Amazon.</p>

<p>Bolsonaro is seeking a second term after a four-year mandate in which he was excoriated for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and his controversial statements on women, the press, minorities, and perceived enemies such as the Supreme Court.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Lula, Brazil's president from 2003 to 2010, is seeking a comeback after spending more than a year in jail on controversial, since-overturned charges stemming from the investigation of a massive graft scheme centered on state-run oil company Petrobras.</p>

<p>'Aquaman' star Jason Momoa was involved in a head-on crash on a highway in Los Angeles over the weekend. The 'Game Of Thrones' actor was reportedly driving along Old Topanga Road in Calabasas, California on Sunday morning when a motorcycle crossed the centre line and smashed head-on into his 1970 Oldsmobile.<br />

The motorcycle was being driven by a 21-year-old man who was immediately helped by the actor who got out of his car to check on him. Eventually, a passing driver called 911 and the motorcyclist took to a nearby hospital where was treated for non-life threatening injuries.&nbsp;<br />

According to reports, Momoa was not injured. California Highway Patrol said the motorcyclist hit the left front side of Momoa's car and was ejected from the motorcycle.</p>

<p>So far it is unclear as to why the motorcyclist crossed the central line. No charges of the crash have been pressed by either of the parties.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It appears Jason Momoa will get a huge salary raise to star in the second movie as half-human and half-Atlantean DC superhero Arthur Curry of Aquaman. As per a Variety report, for 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom', Momoa will receive $15 million, a 100 per cent jump from 2018's 'Aquaman', for which the Hawaiian actor received $7.5 million. 'The Lost Kingdom' brings back director James Wan and continues the story of Atlantean DC superhero who was born of Atlantean queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman) and human lighthouse keeper Thomas Curry (Temuera Morrison).</p>

<p>In the original film, written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, Aquaman took on Patrick Wilson's Orm Marius or Oceanmaster for control over the kingdom of Atlantis. Assisting him was his love interest and warrior Amber Heard's Mera, the princess of another underwater kingdom Xebel, ruled by King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren), who will also come back.</p>

He played the role of David Kane or Black Manta, a pirate and mercenary who has created a special suit using his intensive technical knowledge and can shoot destructive beams from his helmet. 'See' season 3 trailer teases an explosive conclusion to Jason Momoa-led sci-fi series

<p>In superhero blockbuster Aquaman, popular Hollywood actor Jason Momoa plays the role of protector of the deep, but with the world`s oceans under threat in real life, he is also taking the fight off-screen.</p>

<p>"Without a healthy ocean life, our planet as we know would not exist," Momoa said with the sea behind him as he took part in an event on a Portuguese beach ahead of the United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon, which starts on Monday.</p>

<p>Around 7,000 people, from heads of state to environmental activists, are expected to attend the conference, which was postponed from 2020 to this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.</p>

<p>Dozens of youth activists from various countries clapped and cheered as Momoa, who will soon become the U.N. Environment Programme advocate for Life Below Water, spoke about the problems facing the world`s oceans.</p>
