Israel carries out preemtive strike on Iran, about 30 targets hit

Israel has named its latest operation against Iran “Lion’s Roar,” a title chosen personally by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The decision came after the Israel Defense Forces confirmed it carried out what it described as preemptive strikes on Iran, triggering explosions in Tehran and prompting a nationwide emergency. Citing officials, The Times of Israel reports that the IDF had initially settled on its own operational designation. Netanyahu opted instead for a name that carries clearer symbolism and a reference to the June 2025 strikes against Iran. A senior Iranian official has claimed that Israel deployed “the occult and supernatural spirits” during its recent 12-day war with Iran, according to Iran International. Abdollah Ganji, former editor of the IRGC-linked newspaper Javan and now an advisor to the mayor of Tehran, stated on X that a 'strange phenomenon' occurred during the conflict. “After the recent war, several pieces of paper were found on the streets of Tehran containing talismans with Jewish symbols,” Ganji wrote.

The claim follows earlier remarks from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, who in 2020 alleged that 'hostile countries and Western and Hebrew intelligence services use occult sciences and jinn entities for espionage.' This quote was later removed from some official transcripts. During the conflict, which began with Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities on 13 June, Iran accused Israel of blending conventional attacks with alleged supernatural methods.
Response from Israel
The Mossad’s official X account in Persian responded dismissively to Ganji’s claims: “Using drugs and talking to the jinn are not desirable traits for someone leading a country.” Israeli diplomat Waleed Gadban reposted the message, adding in Farsi: “Jinn, jinn are everywhere,” along with a ghost emoji. The debate over jinn has a deeper history in Iranian political discourse. Clerics on Iranian state television have previously discussed the idea that Israel uses jinn for espionage. In March 2023, Quranic scholar Hojjat ol-Eslam Valiyollah Naghipourfar claimed that Iran’s intelligence services had thwarted Israeli infiltration efforts conducted via jinn. Some clerics treat these entities as literal threats; others, including modernist theologians, interpret them metaphorically.
Strange patterns in the desert
Adding to the speculation, social media users circulated satellite images showing geometric patterns, including Stars of David and triangles, etched into a desert near an Iranian missile base. The origin of these markings remains unclear. Iranian authorities removed the symbols after they were discovered, but Gadban reposted an image with the caption: “We are closer to you than your jugular vein.” The recent confrontation concluded after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered strikes on three key Iranian nuclear sites on June 23, before brokering a ceasefire.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made his first public appearance on Saturday (Jul 5) since the start of his country's 12-day war with Israel. The Iranian supreme leader was seen attending a religious ceremony in central Tehran, state media reported. Dressed in traditional black mourning robes, the 86-year-old leader was seen on state television greeting a large crowd at the Imam Khomeini Mosque, where Shia Muslims were marking the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammed's grandson Imam Hussein.
Why did Khamenei go missing?
The Iranian supreme leader has been missing from the public for quite a while. His absence during the Israel-Iran conflict had given rise to speculations over his health. However, as crowds chanted, "The blood in our veins for our leader!" Khamenei on Saturday was seen waving and smiling, he appeared physically stable.Earlier, amid the conflict between Israel and Iran, which the US entered later, Mehdi Fazaeli, head of Khamenei's archives office, during an interview with The New York Times, was asked about Khamenei's well-being: "People are very worried about the Supreme Leader." To this, Fazaeli, without offering a direct answer, ominously said, "We all should be praying."He assured the host that the people who are responsible for protecting the Supreme Leader were doing their job well, and said, "God willing, our people can celebrate victory next to their leader, God willing."
Khamenei absent from action
The appearance marked Khamenei's first in-person event since June 11 — just two days before Israel launched surprise airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites on June 13. The Israeli airstrikes ignited the most direct military confrontation between the two countries in decades. On June 11, Khamenei met with members of parliament, and just last week, he released a pre-recorded message. However, his lack of public presence during the height of the conflict had drawn global attention. Meanwhile, reports suggested that the Supreme Leader had been hiding in a secure underground bunker and was avoiding all electronic communication to prevent assassination attempts. Khamenei's public reappearance may just be Iran's attempt at projecting stability and control after the so-called 12-day conflict.

There have been speculations about its true nature and size since it was first made public in 2009.
All about Fordow nuclear facility
The main halls of the facility are an estimated 80 to 90 metres beneath the ground, to make it safe from any aerial bomb known to be possessed by Israel. It further makes it nearly impossible to destroy the site. The construction of the facility began around 2006 and it became operational in 2009, the same year Iran publicly acknowledged its existence. The site is reportedly protected by Iranian and Russian surface-to-air missile systems. But, those air defenses have likely been already struck in the Israeli attacks.
Can bunker-buster bombs help in this?
If Israel wants to destroy the Fordow nuclear facility, the US has to intervene and help in attacking the site. The US has to provide "bunker-buster bombs" to Israel, which are believed to significantly damage the Fordow nuclear fuel enrichment plant. The bunker buster is a wide term, used to describe bombs that are designed to penetrate deep below the surface before exploding. The bomb has to be dropped from an American aircraft, which could have wide-ranging ramifications. In this particular case, it refers to the latest GBU-57 A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator bomb in the American arsenal.Roughly, it is the 30000-pound precision-guided bomb, and is guided to attack deeply buried and hardened bunkers and tunnels, according to the US Air Force. Moreover, the bomb is believed to be able to penetrate about 200 feet below the surface before exploding and these bombs can be dropped one after another, which can effectively drill deeper and deeper with successive blasts.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that they are attacking Iran to eliminate its missile and nuclear program, calling it an "existential threat to Israel.""This entire operation ... really has to be completed with the elimination of Fordo,” Yechiel Leiter, Israel's ambassador to the US told Fox News.

Iran accused the United States of being complicit in strikes launched by Israel on the Islamic Republic at the United Nations Security Council on Friday (June 13), adding that it would “be wise” to negotiate over its nuclear program. Israel-Iran war: Tehran accuses US of being ‘complicit’ in Israeli strikes at UN

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has confirmed that Iran informed the agency about Israeli attacks on two of its nuclear sites, Fordo and Isfahan.Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, Grossi said that “parts of the Natanz facility have been destroyed,” including “the above ground plant where Iran was producing uranium enriched up to 60%.” He added that while there is radiological and chemical contamination inside some facilities, it is “manageable” with the right measures. Also read: Explosions near Khamenei’s residence: Israel strikes Tehran’s 'most guarded' Pasteur neighbourhood - Report
Natanz uranium plant suffers major damage
Grossi confirmed that the Israeli strikes had destroyed the aboveground nuclear fuel production site at Natanz.
