The University of Arizona Police said that there was an unlawful gathering at University Park early on Friday morning, advising individuals to "leave immediately" or "avoid the area" completely.

Subsequently, the police department said on X that they used "chemical munition" to clear the gathering.

"Police instructing unlawful assembly to disperse. Chemical munitions deployed. Avoid the area &amp; follow directions of police," they tweeted on X.

"The University of Arizona Police Department is enforcing our campus use policy to remove an unauthorized encampment. A structure made from wooden pallets and other debris was erected on campus property after 5 p.m. in violation of the policy. This came after the riot gear-clad police raid on an anti-Israel camp in Tucson, where they detained many individuals early on Wednesday.

At that time, school administrators were instructed by President Robert Robbins to "immediately enforce campus use policies."

Republican senator from Arizona's 17th District, Justine Wadsack, demanded "mass arrests" in response to the "disorderly" protest.

When questioned by a user of X about whether the demonstrators were "committing actual crimes," she said that many individuals had attacked law enforcement.

Participants, according to her, were "trespassing" and "committing disorderly conduct."

"This is not a peaceful protest when they are trespassing, stealing fencing for barriers, committing disorderly conduct, assaulting police by throwing frozen water bottles at their heads, spraying people with a mixture of CocaCola &amp; yeast while shooting off fireworks!" Wadsack tweeted.

United States President Joe Biden said he did not talk about a ceasefire during his phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as he pressed the latter to ensure the civilians in Gaza are protected.

Malaysia on Wednesday (Dec 20) imposed a ban on Israeli-flagged cargo ships from docking at its ports in response to the ongoing war in Gaza.

Israel-Hamas war: Malaysia bans Israeli-flagged cargo ships from its ports 

A Canadian youth was charged and arrested with terrorism related offences in connection with antisemitism activity, which has been witnessing&nbsp;a spike across the world after the Israel-Hamas war.

The police arrested the youth, whose information has not been shared citing the accused’s age, on Friday (Dec 15) for facilitating terrorist activity by communicating instructional material related to an explosive substance, CTV News reported.

The accused is further charged with knowingly instructing a person to carry out terrorist activity against "Jewish persons”, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a press release.

Noting the rise of using the internet in terrorism-related activities, the police said it has arrested five young people on such offences since June 2023.

The police said that these activities are especially prevalent among young people, urging the adults in authority positions to watch for early warning signs of radicalisation.

<h2>Mayor asks police to tighten security around Jewish institutions&nbsp;</h2>

“Those include dehumanisation of others, extreme anti-government attitudes and clear statements of intention to carry out violent acts,” the statement added.

Reacting to the development,&nbsp;Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe expressed shock over the incident and asked the police to tighten security around synagogues and other Jewish institutions.

“I was shocked to learn the details of a planned attack against Ottawa's Jewish community,” Sutcliffe said on X.

“There has been a rise in antisemitism in Ottawa in recent weeks.”

He added he was grateful that strong investigative work by the RCMP and Ottawa police was able to avert an attack. He said police would continue to patrol synagogues and other Jewish institutions.

Canadian youth arrested on terrorism charges for targeting Jewish community

Israel on Friday (Nov 24) freed 39 Palestinian women and children from prisons in exchange for the first wave of hostages released by the Hamas in Gaza.

The detainees were welcomed by cheering crowds across the West Bank and some marching in the street carrying Palestinian flags.

A few of them also carried the flag of the Hamas group amid chants&nbsp;in support of Abu Ubaida, the spokesperson of the group's armed wing.

"I am happy but my liberation came at the price of the blood of the martyrs," said Marah Bakir, 24, referring to the nearly 15,000 deaths across the Gaza Strip that its Hamas-led government says were caused by Israel's military offensive.

Freedom from "the four walls of the prison" is "magnificent", said Bakir, who had been in custody for eight years.

A total of 39 Palestinian women and minors, who were detained in Israel on various charges, were released under the deal brokered by Qatar to pause the fighting in Gaza.&nbsp;

On the other hand, as a part of the agreement, 24 hostages were released by the Hamas group on Friday, which included 13 Israelis, 10 Thais and a Filipino.

Thirteen Israeli hostages were first handed over to the Red Cross, which then placed them in the custody of Israeli forces after a medical examination.

They entered Egypt through the Rafah crossing and were then handed over to the Israeli forces.

Nearly more than 100 Palestinian prisoners are scheduled to be released over the coming four days and more may be released if the truce is extended.

Hamas stated that a group of 13 Israeli&nbsp;hostages, who were taken captive in the October 7 attack carried out on Israel, were handed over as part of the temporary truce on Friday (Nov 24). 
 
"Half an hour ago, the prisoners were handed to the Red Cross who will take them to the Egyptians,” said a source close to Hamas at the Rafah crossing, while speaking to AFP. 
 
A source from Hamas' military wing confirmed the handover, further stating, "This is the first group under the agreement." 
 
In the first tranche, 13 women and child hostages were released after 49 days of captivity and handed over to the Red Cross, from where they headed back to Israel.

While they were en route to Rafah crossing, the hostages underwent brief medical examinations at a hospital in Khan Younis. The first batch of 13 Israeli hostages entered Egypt through Rafah crossing and were then handed over to the Israeli forces. 
 
Confirming their handover to AFP, a source from Israeli forces said, "The 13 Israeli hostages are now with the Israeli security services.”

Meanwhile, the Red Cross said, "We have facilitated this release by transporting them from Gaza to the Rafah border, marking the real-life impact of our role as a neutral intermediary between the parties."

Qatar, confirming the total tally later,&nbsp;said a total of 13 Israelis, 10 Thais and one Filipino have been released so far. It further confirmed that Israel freed 39 prisoners as per the deal with Hamas. 
 
This was part of the deal which was finalised after weeks of talks which involved Israel, Palestinian militant groups, Egypt, Qatar and the United States. 
 
During the four-day temporary truce, Hamas is set to release at least 50 hostages, which leaves around 190 captives still in the hands of militants. In exchange, Israel is releasing 39 women and children from Israeli prisons, which equals 150 Palestinians prisoners, as per reports.

Israel’s air strikes on Gaza in retaliation to the Oct 7 Hamas attack have been wiping out generations of families. A Palestinian man, while talking to BBC, showed a photo with several kids sitting at a table, claiming that most of them have now been killed in the Israeli offensive.

Ahmed al-Naouq, a Palestinian NGO worker who moved to London four years back, took out at an old selfie with his nieces and nephews and said that most of the children in the photo are now dead. In total, Ahmed lost 21 of his family members, including his father, three sisters, two brothers and 14 of their children.

Since Israel Defence Forces (IDF) started air strikes in Gaza, more than 11,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, including children, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry. The air strikes began after the Oct 7 attack by Hamas, in which about 1200 Israelis were killed and more than 200 taken hostage.&nbsp;

Israel says that it is bombarding Gaza with the intention of rooting out Hamas completely. IDF has accused Hamas of deliberately operating from the heart of densely populated Gaza and using civilians as human shields.&nbsp;

His sister Aya had gone there to take shelter with her children after her own apartment was damaged by an air strike. His other sisters, Walaa and Alaa, were there too with their children. The house was in the centre of Gaza in the town of Deir al-Balah, an area that had never been targeted before. They thought it was safe.

Ahmed moved to London four years ago to work for an NGO and hasn't been home since. The last time he saw the children together was over a video call.&nbsp;

Ahmed knew 13-year-old Eslam the best, who was the eldest among the lot. He was killed alongside his little sisters - Dima (10), Tala (9), Nour (5) and Nasma (2), as well as his cousins Raghdad (13), Bakr (11), Sarah (9), Mohamed and Basema who were eight and Abdullah and Tamim who were six.&nbsp;

A week after the bomb struck the home on Oct 22, communications from Gaza were almost entirely cut off as Israel escalated its attack, and Ahmed couldn't contact anyone.&nbsp;

When the signal was reconnected two days later, he learned that another one of his nieces, Malak (11) had also died. She was found alive under the rubble but succumbed to her injuries later in the hospital.&nbsp;

The expert said that tracking devices have been fitted on these birds which relay information about the human remains of the attack victims back to the military.

The idea was the brainchild of EITAN, a unit within the army's human resources branch which is responsible for locating missing soldiers.

Ohad Hatzofe of Israel's Nature and Parks Authority told AFP that when the war began on October 7, some reservists of the EITAN unit had approached him to discuss the possibility of using the birds to locate corpses.

<h2>Birds scavenge for corpses&nbsp;</h2>

"They asked me if my birds could help with something," said Hatzofe, who heads a programme that tracks endangered griffon vultures that primarily feed on dead animals, as well as other birds of prey.

The programme focuses on studying the migratory patterns, feeding habits and environmental threats faced by the birds by using GPS trackers fitted on them.

On October 23, the army was able to locate the bodies of the victims near Beeri, just outside the Gaza Strip, with the help of a rare sea eagle.

The sea eagle had returned to Israeli skies after spending the summer in northern Russia.

"I sent my data" to the army, Hatzofe was quoted as saying.

"They went to verify it and recovered four bodies," he said, unable to reveal more about the location or identities of the corpses.

<h2>Those missing are yet to be found or identified&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

About 85 residents were found killed in Beeri, a kibbutz or agricultural community when Hamas terrorists stormed across the highly-militarised border to carry out the worst attack since Israel's creation in 1948.

In Beeri, another 30 are missing or presumed to be among the roughly 240 hostages seized by Hamas during its attack.

With the help of another bird, a Bonelli's eagle, the military was able to recover "other bodies inside Israel", Hatzofe said.

On Monday, Israeli police said they had identified the bodies of 843 civilians and 351 soldiers in total.

The Iranian president told PM Modi that Tehran supports any joint global effort for an immediate ceasefire, lifting the blockade and providing relief to the oppressed people of Gaza.

Saudi Arabia intends to review its production levels in the coming month and will consider the options of "extending the cut, deepening the cut, or increasing production," as stated by the Saudi Press Agency.

Russia's Deputy Prime Minister, Alexander Novak, echoed these sentiments in a separate statement.

Recent weeks have seen fluctuations in oil prices due to concerns about the conflict between Israel and Hamas potentially escalating into a larger regional conflict involving major crude producer Iran. On Friday, Brent futures closed just under $85 a barrel in London.

Should a broader conflict ensue, it might prompt both Saudi Arabia and Russia to reassess their planned production cuts. The International Energy Agency has warned about the potential risks posed by high fuel prices to global inflation and the economy. Nevertheless, for now, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its partners remain committed to keeping oil supplies under strict control.

Saudi Arabia, in particular, may be motivated to continue these production cuts as it seeks oil prices as high as $100, according to Bloomberg Economics. Such high prices are essential to fund ambitious projects like Neom, a futuristic city, and the acquisition of prominent athletes for domestic sports franchises. On the other hand, President Vladimir Putin relies on petroleum revenues to finance ongoing efforts related to the situation in Ukraine.

According to Bloomberg, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman previously stated at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh that the kingdom's oil-market strategy has been effective.

Additionally, signs of weakness in physical oil markets may incentivise Saudi Arabia to maintain its course. Declining profits in the fuel-making sector and rising freight costs for transporting crude across regions have posed challenges. Despite industry expectations, substantial inventory declines have yet to materialise, as observed by Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

Eurasia Group, a consultancy, suggests that Saudi Arabia might be compelled to extend its unilateral 1 million barrel-a-day production cut into 2024 if market conditions continue to deteriorate. The International Energy Agency predicts that a new surplus in supply will emerge early next year as demand growth slows significantly.

The entire OPEC+ coalition, comprised of 23 nations, is scheduled to convene for a ministerial meeting on November 26 to review the policy for 2024.

Tunnel warfare is a battlefield challenge as old as time, yet in the modern era, it continues to confound even the mightiest of military forces. Throughout history, from the Battle of Iwo Jima 70 years ago to the relentless persistence of the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, underground tunnels have proven to be formidable obstacles.&nbsp;

In the Battle of Iwo Jima, American forces clashed with fierce resistance on the small island in the Pacific during World War II. The Japanese defenders had burrowed an extensive network of tunnels and underground bunkers, which became a nightmarish obstacle for the U.S. troops. The subterranean labyrinth allowed the enemy to hide, ambush, and wage a prolonged defence, defying conventional tactics and lengthening the battle.&nbsp;

Fast forward to the jungles of Vietnam, where Viet Cong soldiers adopted a similar strategy. They used a vast and intricate tunnel system to resist the might of the United States military during the Vietnam War. These tunnels provided not only shelter but also ingenious pathways for the guerrilla fighters to evade, attack, and disappear, making it one of the most elusive and challenging conflicts in modern warfare.&nbsp;

As Israel stands poised for a possible ground invasion of Gaza, a daunting obstacle looms beneath the surface, threatening to complicate an already complex and treacherous mission. This subterranean challenge is none other than the extensive network of tunnels meticulously built by the Hamas militants, turning the battleground into a nightmare for any invading force.&nbsp;

These tunnels, stretching hundreds of kilometres, have been referred to as the "metro." This hidden challenge has turned Gaza into a nightmarish battlefield for the Israeli military, making an already complicated mission even more treacherous as the 200 hostages are kept in these tunnels. &nbsp;

Over 200 hostages are believed to be hidden possibly in a labyrinth that Hamas has built beneath the enclave, even as Israeli warplanes pound the territory ahead of a threatened invasion, killing more than 5,000 Palestinians.&nbsp;

The extensive tunnel network is more than just a threat; it's a lifeline for Hamas. These passages allow the militant group to endure relentless bombardments, move covertly within Gaza, resupply their forces, conceal hostages, and execute surprise attacks.&nbsp;

These tunnels, often reinforced with concrete and reaching astonishing depths, are wired for electricity and communication, enabling Hamas to operate in the shadows, hidden from the watchful eyes above.&nbsp;Resourceful and tactically adept, Hamas considers itself to be a master of asymmetric warfare, where a smaller force can outsmart a numerically stronger opponent, something that could pose huge problems for Israel if it launches a ground offensive within Gaza. Remember, the Hamas know that the Israelis are coming for them and they are prepared for the guerilla warfare inside the tunnels.

To counter this subterranean challenge, Israel has specialised units, such as Yahalom, dedicated to combating underground warfare. In the past they have also deployed bunker busters, which provide a means to engage the enemy from a distance, minimising the risks to their own forces.&nbsp;

The New Wave band, named after a US bomber aircraft but more famous for their beehive hairdos, will still attend the state dinner as guests. Presidential military bands will provide "instrumental music" instead.

Albanese arrived at the White House on Tuesday ahead of a formal state visit on Wednesday when he is expected to discuss topics including China, Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war.
