Israeli hostage calls for pressure on Netanyahu government in video shared by Hamas ally

A majority of Gazans believe Hamas' decision to launch the October 7 attack on Israel was incorrect, according to a poll published on Tuesday pointing to a big drop in backing for the assault that prompted Israel's devastating Gaza offensive.

The poll, conducted in early September by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR), found that 57 per cent of people surveyed in the Gaza Strip said the decision to launch the offensive was incorrect, while 39 per cent said it was correct.

It marked the first time since October 7 that a PSR poll found a majority of Gazan respondents judging the decision as incorrect. It was accompanied by a drop in support for the attack in the West Bank, though a majority of 64 per cent of respondents there still thought it was the correct decision, the poll found.

PSR's previous poll, conducted in June, showed that 57 per cent of respondents in Gaza thought the decision to be correct. The military claimed that an Israeli attack had hit Hamas command centres, but Gaza's civil defence service said that the strike had struck two schools in Gaza City on Sunday, killing at least 30 people. Based on a count of tolls previously provided by Hamas officials, these make up the total number of schools in Gaza that have been attacked since July 6 at least 11, killing around 150 people. "The number of martyrs in the massacre of the Hassan Salameh and Al-Nasr schools' bombing has risen to 30. Dozens were also wounded," civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP. According to a civil defence spokesman, women and children made up the majority of the wounded and deceased. He stated that the schools housed Palestinians who had been displaced as a result of the continuing conflict between Israel and Hamas terrorists. The two schools were the target of an attack that was verified by the Israeli military. According to the civil defence agency, a similar Israeli attack happened on Saturday in Gaza City, hitting another school compound and killing at least 17 people. Hamas has been accused by the Israeli military on many occasions of hiding its commanders and militants and utilising civilian buildings as command and control centres. Hamas refutes these accusations According to an AFP count based on official Israeli data, 1,197 people, mostly civilians, lost their lives in the October 7 attack by Hamas militants in Israel, which marked the start of the Gaza War. Militants also abducted 251 persons, 111 of whom are still hostages in Gaza, including 39 who the IDF claims are dead. During the October 7 attack, terrorists affiliated with Hamas killed approximately 1,200 people, predominantly civilians, and abducted about 250 others. Since then, roughly half of the hostages have been released, primarily through exchanges for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel during a weeklong ceasefire in November, 2023. Israel says that approximately 100 hostages still remain in Gaza, as also the bodies of around 30 others. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to uproot Hamas and secure the release of all hostages, but has encountered minimal success. On Friday (May 24), Netanyahu spoke about Israel's obligation to do everything possible to bring back those abducted, whether dead or alive. The International Court of Justice is expected to deliver a ruling on South Africa's urgent plea to halt Israel's operations on Friday afternoon. Israel is unlikely to comply with any such order, potentially increasing pressure on the country, already facing isolation. The US military has confirmed on Friday (May 17) that the first aid shipment has reached Gaza via the temporary pier. According to a post on X by US Central Command, aid trucks began moving ashore around 0900 local time.

"This is an ongoing, multinational effort to deliver additional aid to Palestinian civilians in Gaza via a maritime corridor that is entirely humanitarian in nature," the post stated, stressing that no US troops went ashore.

The US started constructing the floating base weeks ago to facilitate aid delivery to Gaza amidst Israel's military campaign against Hamas.

What's the process of dispatching aid?

This announcement follows reports that hundreds of tonnes of aid had arrived in Cyprus on Wednesday (May 15), where it undergoes screening before being loaded on to commercial ships for delivery to the pier.

Once at the pier, smaller US military vessels, capable of carrying five to 15 lorries of aid, will transport it to a floating pier several hundred metres long, fixed to Gaza's beach.

The lorries will travel along the pier and drop off the aid at a marshalling yard on the beach.

According to authorities, University of Arizona police were compelled to use tear gas or another chemical munition to break up anti-Israel demonstrations on campus.

The University of Arizona Police said that there was an unlawful gathering at University Park early on Friday morning, advising individuals to "leave immediately" or "avoid the area" completely.

Subsequently, the police department said on X that they used "chemical munition" to clear the gathering.

"Police instructing unlawful assembly to disperse. Chemical munitions deployed. Avoid the area & follow directions of police," they tweeted on X.

"The University of Arizona Police Department is enforcing our campus use policy to remove an unauthorized encampment. A structure made from wooden pallets and other debris was erected on campus property after 5 p.m. in violation of the policy. University officials issued warnings to remove the encampment and disperse. The warnings were ignored," a statement from the college read.

The statement further stated that in order to safeguard the campus, students, professors, visitors, and university activities, University President Robert C Robbins has implemented a zero-tolerance enforcement strategy.

"Anyone found in violation of the law faces arrest and legal action. To guarantee the security of those attending the Centennial Hall convocation, university officials have taken steps," the statement added.

This came after the riot gear-clad police raid on an anti-Israel camp in Tucson, where they detained many individuals early on Wednesday.

At that time, school administrators were instructed by President Robert Robbins to "immediately enforce campus use policies."

Republican senator from Arizona's 17th District, Justine Wadsack, demanded "mass arrests" in response to the "disorderly" protest.

When questioned by a user of X about whether the demonstrators were "committing actual crimes," she said that many individuals had attacked law enforcement.

Participants, according to her, were "trespassing" and "committing disorderly conduct."

"This is not a peaceful protest when they are trespassing, stealing fencing for barriers, committing disorderly conduct, assaulting police by throwing frozen water bottles at their heads, spraying people with a mixture of CocaCola & yeast while shooting off fireworks!" Wadsack tweeted.

At the 96th Academy Awards, several influential figures, including Billie Eilish, director Ava DuVernay, Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, and more, made a powerful statement by wearing red pins in support of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The pins were part of an effort launched by Artists4Ceasefire, which is a group of artists working in the entertainment industry who recently penned an open letter to Joe Biden to demand an immediate and permanent cease in Gaza. Signatories of the letter included Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Stewart, Mahershala Ali, Jennifer Lopez, and Ava DuVernay.

The pins feature an orange hand adorned with a black heart and surrounded by a red circle. According to a press release, the pin symbolises collective support for "an immediate and permanent cease-fire, the release of all of the hostages and for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza".

In a red carpet interview, Ramy Youssef emphasised the need for safety, justice, and peace for the Palestinian people, stating, "We're all calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. We're calling for the safety of everyone involved. We really want lasting justice and peace for the Palestinian people. We really just want to say, 'Let's just stop killing children.' There’s so much there to process and it feels like the easiest way to have the conversations that people want to have is when they're isn't an active bombing campaign happening."

Former adult star Mia Khalifa recently got into an altercation with a Jewish woman. Mia shared the video of her argument with the woman on social media which has since then gone viral.

The video has been shared on X (formerly Twitter) and Mia claimed in the caption that the unknown woman was following her.

Hamas launched a deadly attack inside the Israeli territory on October 7 last year, in which more than 1,200 people were killed. Since the attack, Mia has expressed her support for Palestinians whom she has described as "freedom fighters". Her comments have prompted a backlash.

In her X post, shared on Tuesday, Ms Khalifa said, "The Zionists are losing the plot. She followed me through the lobby calling me slurs and didn't stop the entire time she was waiting for her UberPool at the Antique Jewelry Fair. She's a vendor- something she made abundantly clear so I guess this is what her business stands for."

The 43-second clip that Mia posted has the woman saying "That's right." The former porn star then addresses the young man next to her asking, "You proud of your mom?"

"Am Yisrael Chai," the woman says in response, a cry widely used in solidarity with Jewish people. The woman is heard repeating the same phrase several times in the video.

She also reveals her necklace and asks Mia, "You see that?" However, Mia tells her, "Are you waiting for the bus? Because I'm waiting for my valet."

The woman then approached Mia behind, exposed her necklace, and said, "Am Yisrael Chai."

At this point, the adult star starts walking away and says, "You smell like knockoff falafel."

The confrontation led to a huge debate on social media, with some users showing solidarity with Mia Khalifa, while others disagreeing with her behaviour.

Israel-Hamas war: Several killed in strike near south Gaza hospital; UN asks Israel to ‘end unlawful killings’

United States President Joe Biden said he did not talk about a ceasefire during his phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as he pressed the latter to ensure the civilians in Gaza are protected.

“I had a long talk with Netanyahu today [Saturday] and it was a private conversation,” Biden told reporters on Saturday (Dec 23).

“I did not ask for a ceasefire,” he said, in response to a shouted question.

The White House in a statement later, said that Biden and Netanyahu discussed Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, including its “objectives and phasing”.

Biden asks Netanyahu to protect Gaza civilians

Biden “emphasised the critical need to protect the civilian population including those supporting the humanitarian aid operation, and the importance of allowing civilians to move safely away from areas of ongoing fighting,” said the statement.

“The leaders discussed the importance of securing the release of all remaining hostages.”

The telephone call between the two leaders came a day after the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding "safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance at scale”. However, it did not mention a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas militants.

The US and Russia abstained from the vote, whose impact on the ground, aid groups fear, will be close to nil.

On December 20, Netanyahu had ruled out a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip until the "elimination" of the Palestinian terror group Hamas.

Netanyahu not keen on ceasefire

He reiterated his country's long-standing position on the war saying that the fighting wouldn't stop at all unless Hamas was "completely destroyed" and hostages were released safe and sound.

He said Hamas was given "a simple choice — either to surrender or die" as they did not "have any option".

In an interview with Qatar-based Al Jazeera news, Hamas spokesperson Ghazi Hamad said, “Some people are looking for a small pause -- a pause here and there for one week, two weeks, three weeks. But we want to stop the aggression (completely). I think we will not play this game.”

Malaysia on Wednesday (Dec 20) imposed a ban on Israeli-flagged cargo ships from docking at its ports in response to the ongoing war in Gaza.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim himself announced the decision, singling out ZIM, Israel’s largest shipping firm.

The PM added that the ships on their way to Israel will also be barred from loading cargo at the Malaysian ports.

The decision has further raised concerns regarding the impact of the Israel-Hamas war on global shipping amidst increasing attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea by the Iran-backed Houthi group.

A Canadian youth was charged and arrested with terrorism related offences in connection with antisemitism activity, which has been witnessing a spike across the world after the Israel-Hamas war.

The police arrested the youth, whose information has not been shared citing the accused’s age, on Friday (Dec 15) for facilitating terrorist activity by communicating instructional material related to an explosive substance, CTV News reported.

The accused is further charged with knowingly instructing a person to carry out terrorist activity against "Jewish persons”, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a press release.

Noting the rise of using the internet in terrorism-related activities, the police said it has arrested five young people on such offences since June 2023.

The police said that these activities are especially prevalent among young people, urging the adults in authority positions to watch for early warning signs of radicalisation.

Hamas releases 24 hostages on first day of amid temporary truce in Gaza

In the shadow of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Hollywood's role as a bastion of free expression and diverse perspectives is under scrutiny, revealing a disconcerting bias against those who dare to speak up for Palestinians. While the Israel-Palestine issue is undeniably complex, the punitive measures taken against pro-Palestinian celebrities in Hollywood are raising questions about the industry's commitment to genuine inclusivity and freedom of speech.

Celebrities like Melissa Barrera, Susan Sarandon, and Bella Hadid have found themselves facing professional consequences for daring to take a stand on the Israel-Hamas conflict. Barrera's dismissal from the Scream franchise and Sarandon being dropped by her talent agency, UTA, send a chilling message: expressing pro-Palestinian views may cost you your career in Hollywood.

It's crucial to acknowledge the complexity of the Israel-Palestine issue, a geopolitical quagmire with deep historical roots and multifaceted layers of conflict. However, Hollywood, an industry that often prides itself on being a liberal haven, should be a place where diverse opinions are not only accepted but encouraged. The apparent silencing of pro-Palestinian voices contradicts the industry's supposed commitment to freedom of expression.

This isn't merely a matter of political correctness; it's a stark departure from Hollywood's self-proclaimed role as a progressive space for social justice causes. The industry has long been a vocal advocate for various movements, championing LGBTQ+ rights, racial equality, and gender parity. Yet, when it comes to the Israel-Palestine conflict, the same industry appears to have drawn a line in the sand, marking certain perspectives as taboo.

Contrary to the American far right's claims that Hollywood is a breeding ground for liberal indoctrination, the entertainment industry has not historically been a place where people lose their jobs for speaking their minds. It has thrived on the diversity of thought, providing a stage for artists to voice their opinions on a wide array of issues. However, the current treatment of pro-Palestinian figures challenges this perception, exposing a double standard that undermines Hollywood's credibility as a beacon of progressive values.

In an era where calls for justice and equality echo louder than ever, Hollywood's selective tolerance becomes all the more glaring. The entertainment industry must confront this internal contradiction and reaffirm its commitment to fostering an environment where all perspectives are heard, even when it comes to the contentious and deeply divisive Israel-Palestine conflict.

As we navigate through the fallout of the Israel-Hamas conflict, Hollywood's role in stifling pro-Palestinian voices demands introspection. It's time for the industry to live up to its reputation as a haven for diverse viewpoints and, in doing so, to redefine its commitment to genuine freedom of expression, unbound by geopolitical affiliations.

Hollywood's silence on Palestine: A crack in the façade of free expression?

Amid unrelenting strikes, the international community's sluggish response to hostage and aid negotiations, the dire state of Palestinians in Gaza is exacerbated by Israel's operations on the ground. Trapped within a 'circle of death,' Gazans now face the wrath of the rain Gods, rendering their densely populated enclave nearly uninhabitable.

The consequences of this persistent rain are grim, with flooded tents, sewage inundating the streets, and leaky tarp roofs defining the meagre shelters of the Gazans. The overarching question lingers: once this crisis subsides if it does, what will remain of Gaza? The answer remains elusive, overshadowed by the harsh reality Gazans endure.

The besieged enclave is severed from crucial supplies—fuel, aid, water, and food. In this grim reality, bread has become a luxury, while bombs – a grim reality. The blockades and restrictions put in place, have seen a mere 300 trucks enter Gaza—a stark contrast to the pre-war volume and a far cry from what is necessary to meet the enclave's basic needs – whatever is left of it.

Calls for a ceasefire have yielded little relief, with sporadic aid deliveries providing only temporary respite. These deliveries, sometimes agreed upon only on paper as 'tactical pauses,' serve as a brief reprieve until the inevitable cycle of ceasefire calls and subsequent uproar resumes. Gaza, in its current state, remains a testament to the urgent need for sustained international attention and humanitarian assistance, especially considering the impact of Israel's "mowing the lawn" strategy.

With the United States and Israel unequivocally dismissing the possibility of a ceasefire, the sole concession for the people of Gaza appears to be Israel's allowance of two trucks of fuel entering the besieged enclave daily. This limited supply is critical for maintaining the operational functionality of Gaza's water and sewage systems amid the ongoing air and ground siege imposed by Israeli forces.

The decision to permit 140,000 litres (37,000 gallons) of fuel every two days was made by Israel's war cabinet in response to a "special request" from the United States. This humanitarian gesture underscores the severity of the situation in Gaza and the challenging conditions faced by its inhabitants.

Is the authorisation of these limited fuel supplies merely a temporary measure to appease current unrest, possibly reflecting Israel's aim to maintain its activities in Gaza? This interpretation seems plausible. After all lack of sanitation, clean drinking water, food, and medicines will have far-reaching consequences. Some argue that the outbreak of a larger health crisis in the enclave – say an epidemic in Gaza would not only impact the local population but also pose a threat to Israeli troops, potentially compromising their fighting capability. Additionally, is it a stretch to think that this decision provides diplomatic manoeuvrability for Israel to continue advancing its military operations in a bid to weed out Hamas?

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken engaged with members of Israel’s war cabinet, cautioning that the fuel shortage presented a serious risk of a humanitarian catastrophe among Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, according to a statement from a State Department official.

US officials have persistently urged Israel to allow the entry of fuel for an extended period. After weeks of non-compliance, it is now perceived that acceding to this request from the US may alleviate international criticism. This is because it is becoming abundantly clear that the international community, including Israel’s staunch allies, are getting jittery over its operations on the ground in Gaza.

But where will the Gazans go when the limited fuel does get the engine running? The answer, for now at least, remains buried in the rubble.

Israel-Hamas war: Two fuel tankers a day keep ceasefire calls at bay?

Pop sensation Halsey recently took to Instagram to address critics who labelled her a 'coward' for not speaking out earlier on the Israel-Palestine conflict. In a candid and heartfelt post, the singer opened up about the challenges she faced during her tour, revealing that past threats, including instances of violence and swatting at her home, influenced her decision to stay silent initially.

Halsey acknowledged the criticism, admitting, "A few people have suggested that it's cowardice. And to be completely honest, it is." She elaborated on the security measures taken during her tour, including the presence of snipers in the sky, highlighting the genuine fear she experienced. The singer expressed regret for not voicing her support sooner but affirmed her commitment to the liberation of the Palestinian people.

Despite the personal concerns for her family's safety, Halsey talked about the dissonance in allowing those concerns to hinder her from advocating for families enduring far worse violence in the Israel-Palestine conflict. She condemned violence, antisemitism, and Islamophobia while expressing her unwavering commitment to the principles of freedom and safety for all.

The response to Halsey's Instagram stories was mixed, with some fans expressing support and understanding while others were not satisfied with her explanation. Halsey's openness shed light on the complexities artists confront when addressing politically charged issues, especially in the context of ongoing conflicts like the Israel-Palestine situation.

The Israel-Palestine conflict, which erupted on October 7, 2023, has garnered attention from various public figures, including Hollywood stars.

The conflict, now in its fifth iteration, has resulted in a devastating toll, with over 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and more than 11,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, losing their lives. The ongoing hostilities have sparked accusations of war crimes against both Israel and Hamas, with the United Nations reporting widespread civilian displacement, shortages of essential resources, and failing healthcare systems in Gaza.

Global protests have erupted, demanding a ceasefire and the release of hostages. Pro-Palestinian anti-war protests have been described as the largest since those against the Iraq War. The United States' veto of a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire has further fuelled international discussions on the complex and sensitive nature of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
