IPL 2022 Unsold Players' List: Top 5 stars who failed to draw a single bid at mega auction

Team India have often struggled to get rid of the opposition's tail and also not managed contributions from the lower-order at regular intervals, especially while playing away Tests. However, things have changed for the good in the past year with the lower-order often bailing the team out of crisis and adding valuable runs to the scoreboard.

During India's 2021 five-match Test series versus England, in the United Kingdom, the then Virat Kohli-led side played a riveting second Test versus Joe Root-led England at Lord's. During the fifth day, the play started with India 181-6, leading the hosts by 154 runs. The overnight batters -- Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma -- returned back to the pavillion in a jiffy as it seemed like India will manage to set up a target close to 200, or slightly above it.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami joined together in the middle, with India reeling at 209-8, and stitched an unbeaten 89-run ninth-wicket stand, withstanding the short-ball ploy from the English seamers to take the team total to 298-8 (declare). While Bumrah remained unbeaten on 34, Shami registered a memorable fifty (second in whites) to remain 56 not out. Setting up a competitive 272-run target, India beat England by 151 runs after dismissing them for a paltry 124 in the final session of the match.

Recently, during an interview with India.com, Shami reflected back on his vital knock in the Lord's Test and slammed his critics saying that he is scared of short-pitched deliveries. "Let me tell you something. I was never scared of the short ball as many people thought it to be. I have always enjoyed my batting and I do try to contribute as much as possible with the bat and help the team. If I was scared of the short ball, I wouldn’t have scored that half-century at Lord’s. So I don’t think much about it,” the 31-year-old concluded.

Shami, who has an ODI World Cup hat-trick up his sleeves and remains a regular in India's Test line-up, has been rested for the India-West Indies white-ball series at home, which gets underway on February 6.

Senior batters Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane are set to be demoted in BCCI's central contract list. The two senior players have been under the radar for quite sometime, owing to their poor scores in the red-ball format. Pujara's last Test ton came in early 2019 whereas the former vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has not been able to score a hundred following his heroics in the MCG Test between India and Australia in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Rahane's 112 in the MCG Test remains his last Test century and, thus, the right-hander also lost the vice-captaincy post recently. Both Rahane and Pujara were offered a Grade A contract by BCCI in 2021, with a salary of Rs 5 crore each (INR 50 millions).

As per The Times of India, the two will be demoted to Grade B due to their low returns with the bat. The players in Grade B have a salary of Rs 3 crore each (INR 30 millions). In addition, as per the report, veteran pacers Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav are also likely to be dropped in the contract list.

On the other hand, the likes of KL Rahul and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant will not be promoted in the central contract list, the report further adds. While the two players feature in all forms of the game for Team India, they were likely to get a promotion to Grade A+ category. However, the report suggests that it may not happen so soon for them.

The Grade A+ category comprises three players, such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and speedster Jasprit Bumrah. Apart from the contract list, the Indian team for the forthcoming limited-overs series versus West Indies is also set to be announced very soon.

BCCI central contracts: Test specialists Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane likely face demotion - Report

IPL 2022 mega auction: Veteran Indian players who might go unsold

Senior pacer Ishant Sharma has been a regular in Test cricket for India over the years. He has been one of the country's pace spearheads ever since coming into the limelight and continues to remain a vital cog in the fast bowling setup. However, he has struggled with his form and fitness recently which has seen Ishant in and out of India's playing XI.

Ishant is yet to feature in the playing XI for India in the ongoing three-match Test series against South Africa. The senior pacer is no more a certain starter in the playing XI and is unlikely to make the cut in the series-deciding third Test which gets underway from January 11 in Cape Town.

Mohammed Siraj is likely to miss the series-decider after picking up an injury in the second Test with Ishant one of the strongest contenders to take his place in the XI. However, with the likes of Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur above him in the pecking order, Ishant might fail to make the cut.

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer believes Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Siraj are currently India's top three seamers in Tests and Ishant has likely played his final game for the country. Jaffer believes the senior pacer might not play another Test for India in the future.

“I think so [he has played his last Test for India]. If Bumrah, Shami and Siraj are fit, they are the first three seamers. Then you have Shardul and Umesh. Shardul is an all-rounder now so that makes him choose ahead [of other bowlers]. So, definitely, for Ishant, it will be difficult," said Jaffer.

“Obviously, when you are on long tours, the top seamers will be rested or the line-up will be rotated and probably then a place for Ishant will open up. In that case, he will play a few games," he added.

Jaffer believed Ishant, who is in the final lap of his Test career, must be thinking about taking a call on retirement after the ongoing Test series against South Africa. Ishant had picked up 14 wickets in eight Test matches for India in the year 2021.

“But I feel for somebody like Ishant Sharma, who has played over 100 Tests and taken over 300 wickets, I don’t think that is right. So, somewhere I feel he will take a call after the South Africa series. I am sure, he must be thinking about this too," said Jaffer.

India romped past South Africa by 113 runs to win the first Test at SuperSpork Park, Centurion on Thursday (December 30). Setting up a target of 305 runs, Virat Kohli-led India had accounted for 4 wickets of the Proteas in the final innings at stumps on Day 4 and wrapped up the proceedings in the second session of the final day on Thursday.

With this, India achieved their first-ever Test win at Centurion, a venue where South Africa were unbeaten since 2014. Thus, Kohli & Co. have taken a 1-0 lead and will be aiming to win their maiden Test series in the African nation when the second and penultimate Test commences on January 3, at The Wanderers, Johannesburg.

Talking about the Centurion Test win, KL Rahul's 123 and Mayank Agarwal's 60 (both in the first innings) were the top-performers for India with the bat whereas the seamers led the charge with the red cherry. Jasprit Bumrah ended with five scalps in the mach, Mohammed Shami finished with an eight-wicket haul whereas Mohammed Siraj accounted for three wickets and Shardul Thakur took two wickets in the entire contest (taking 18 out of the 20 Proteas scalps). The likes of Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav warmed the bench; depicting the solid bench strength of the Indian pace battery at present.

After the Centurion Test, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra, in a video on his YouTube channel, reserved the title of 'special' for Bumrah. However, when it came to naming the No. 1 speedster in the Indian team taking all venues into account in whites, the former opener picked Shami.

"You look at Bumrah because he's special. But if we equalize every condition, India's number one Test pacer is Mohammad Shami, especially at this point in time. He asks questions with the delivery of his. He took five wickets against this team in Vishakhapatnam as well and now he took a fifer at Centurion," Chopra explained.

"We saw sideways movement from Ngidi, Rabada's pace and saw Bumrah's magic. But what about Shami? Shami doesn't bowl a magic delivery like Bumrah does. But he bowls on dangerous areas consistently and releases the ball with so close to the stumps. Who bowled the most deliveries on fourth stump? Who bowled the maximum deliveries that were hitting on top of off? - It was sensational Shami," he added.

"Jasprit Bumrah is a national asset. He's a treasure. We are so fortunate that our fast bowling unit has matured together. Bumrah took important wickets at important phases of the game. He set the tone by dismissing Dean Elgar in the very first over (first innings). Then, on Day 4 when there was a partnership building up for South Africa, he bowled a magical ball to van der Dussen. Then Keshav Maharaj came to the crease, and mind you, he bats well."

"Bumrah wonderfully bowled a yorker to dismiss him. He then took Elgar out again but with a different kind of a delivery. I mean he (Bumrah) is brilliant, man," the former cricketer opined.

India will now shift their focus to winning the second Test and claim their first-ever series on African soil. In 2006/07 tour of SA, India had taken a 1-0 lead under current head coach Rahul Dravid, however, lost the plot from thereon to lose 2-1. Hence, the national side will be eager for history to not repeat itself this time around.

Shami was the chief wicket-taker for Team India, claiming an impressive 5 for 44 as he was rewarded for maintaining a disciplined line and length throughout. The pacer accounted for the wickets of Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and the likes to handover the advantage to India.

Ind vs SA, 1st Test: Md Shami joins elite list of Indian pacers with 200 wickets during Day 3 in Centurion

The first Test between India and South Africa is set to get underway on December 26 in Centurion. After the ODI captaincy row created a lot of noise in the last few weeks, the focus has now shifted to the cricketing action as Virat Kohli-led India are in South Africa and gearing up for the three-match Test series opener in the African nation.

The No. 1 ranked Indian Test side is well aware that they have a brilliant chance to beat South Africa, who are without pacer Anrich Nortje and are likely to miss Quinton De Kock's services for the last two Tests, and clinch their maiden Test series in the African nation. For that to happen, Kohli-led India will have to start with a bang and their solid pace unit will have to dent the SA batting line-up.

Ahead of the Centurion Test, former BCCI selection committee chief MSK Prasad has picked his four Indian pacers for the tour-opener leaving out experienced speedster Ishant Sharma.

"I think Shardul Thakur is the best choice if they go in with five bowlers as he also gives the option of a steady No.7 batter and we also have Ravichandran Ashwin,” Prasad was quoted as saying by India Today.

"Four bowlers in this line-up are now confirmed if all fit – Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ashwin, and Mohammed Siraj. I don’t think Ishant will be considered ahead of Siraj on current form,” he said.

Ishant was part of India's WTC final and the England Test series. However, his stocks have gone down considerably given his ordinary form and the rise of all-rounder Shardul and Siraj. In this regard, India are likely to go ahead with Bumrah, Shami, Siraj and Shardul in the pace department. Among the spin options, India have R Ashwin, Jayant Yadav and part-time off-spin of Hanuma Vihari.

"Four bowlers in this line-up are now confirmed if all fit – Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ashwin, and Mohammed Siraj. I don’t think Ishant will be considered ahead of Siraj on current form,” he said. However, his stocks have gone down considerably given his ordinary form and the rise of all-rounder Shardul and Siraj. In this regard, India are likely to go ahead with Bumrah, Shami, Siraj and Shardul in the pace department. India vs SA, 1st Test: MSK Prasad picks 4 pacers for Kohli & Co. as experienced campaigner misses out

India are gearing up to take on South Africa in the series-opener of the upcoming three-match Test series which gets underway from December 26. The Boxing Day Test at the SuperSport Park in Centurion will kick off the much-anticipated Test rubber between the two sides. India have been training in Centurion for the past three days after landing in Centurion.

Ahead of the first Tets, the visitors face some major selection headaches with regards to both the batting and the bowling department. While Kohli has preferred to play with five specialist bowlers overseas, the green track and bouncy conditions in Centurion might tempt the visitors to go with an extra batter or include Shardul Thakur in the playing XI as an all-rounder along with R Ashwin.

If India decide to play four bowlers only, an extra batter in the form of Ajinkya Rahane or Shreyas Iyer can be included in the XI. Rahane's spot in the XI is no more certain as he has been replaced as the vice-captain of the team. Rohit Sharma had been named his replacement but in his absence, KL Rahul will be Kohli's deputy in the Test series which means Rahane faces massive competition.

Iyer, who made a stunning debut against New Zealand at home, can be asked to continue batting in the middle-order with Rahul either taking the opener's role or sliding into the middle-order himself. With no Ravindra Jadeja in the squad, Shardul can prove to be a great asset for India as he can be an extra batting option at no.7.

Former chief selector MSK Prasad believes Shardul is the best choice for India, in case the visitors decide to play five bowlers in the Test match. He also named the four pacers India should pick for the game while leaving out senior pacer Ishant Sharma, who has been pipped in the pecking order by Mohammed Siraj after the youngster's recent performances in the whites.

"I think Shardul Thakur is the best choice if they go in with five bowlers as he also gives the option of a steady No.7 batter and we also have Ravichandran Ashwin," Prasad told PTI.

Shardul Thakur in, no Ishant Sharma? MSK Prasad gives his take on India's playing XI for 1st Test against SA

Ishant Sharma's Test career is likely to be cut short after India's upcoming tour of South Africa. The senior pacer is currently one of the most experienced campaigners in the Indian squad and has been spearheading the Indian pace attack for a while now, however, his recent struggles have seen him drop down in the pecking order.

With the emergence of young pacers like Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Navdeep Saini among others, Ishant's future in the longest format faces uncertainty going ahead. While he has been sidelined in white-ball cricket, the 33-year-old has been a regular in Tests and has already played 105 Test matches for India with 311 wickets under his belt.

However, he is expected to remain under the scanner during the South Africa tour along with the likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, as per a report in The Indian Express. While Pujara and Rahane might see their Test careers get extended if they manage to perform well and present a strong case for themselves, the South Africa series is expected to be the last for Ishant in Team India's jersey.

“Rahane’s removal as vice-captain is a clear warning signal to him. As a senior member in the side, he needs to contribute more. Same is true for Pujara also. He too has been around for a long time and now the team expects him to play those crucial knocks in big games," a top BCCI official was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

"In case they score and have a significant impact on the series, they might be able to extend their Test careers. But in the case of Ishant, this could be it,” he added.

Ishant was last seen in action during India's first Test of the home series against New Zealand in Kanpur this month where he went wicket-less in the first innings after bowling 15 overs. He bowled only seven overs in the second innings and remained without a wicket.

The veteran pacer was replaced by Siraj for the second and final Test of the series. The youngster went on to impress as he picked up a three-wicket haul in New Zealand's first innings to inflict a collapse against the visitors and help India script a massive win by 372 runs in the game.

It remains to be seen how will the selectors and the team management deal with Ishant's struggles and if the South Africa series will actually be his last for the national team.

South Africa tour likely to be Ishant Sharma's last assignment for Team India - Report

Ajinkya Rahane is expected to keep his place in the Indian team but whether he would remain vice-captain remains to be seen when the selectors announce the Test squad for tour of South Africa on Wednesday.

It is learnt that announcement of ODI squad could be delayed as the first match is on January 19 and the sensitive issue of Virat Kohli's future as white-ball leader is at stake.

However, Rahane, whose place in the playing XI is under doubt, will find it difficult to retain his vice-captaincy after 12 consecutive failures that led the team management to dropping him from the Mumbai Test on the pretext of hamstring niggles.

If Rahane is stripped of Test vice-captaincy, senior batter Rohit Sharma is the front runner for the job.

Similarly, Ishant Sharma, who has played more than 100 Test matches, doesn't look the force to reckon with anymore and he might not fit in the team, whether it's a three or four-pronged pace attack that India may use.

The likes of Prasidh Krishna and Avesh Khan may join Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav.

With Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill and in-form Hanuma Vihari set for the middle order, one between Priyank Panchal or Abhimanyu Easwaran could be the back up No. 3 for Cheteshwar Pujara.

Likely India Squad (maximum 20 players):

Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Chesteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan/Deepak Chahar, Wriddhiman Saha, Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill, Hanuma Vihari, Abhimanyu Easwaran/Priyank Panchal, Jayant Yadav.

Virat Kohli said nothing about it: Laxman surprised with Rahane, Jadeja and Ishant's injuries for 2nd Test

Virat Kohli is the biggest name in world cricket in the modern-era. The 32-year-old broke into the scene at the highest level in 2008 and was a part of the MS Dhoni-led Indian team which won the 2011 ODI World Cup at home. After the mega event, Team India went through a revamp which saw the rise of King Kohli.

Since then, Kohli continues to be the poster boy of Indian cricket and one of the best batsmen across formats. While many will point out that the right-hander isn't at his fluent best in all forms of the game, having not scored a single century since late 2019, but his records still speak volumes of his abilities. To date, Kohli has 70 international tons and over 22,000 runs.

While the Indian captain plays the game in an aggressive manner, he is totally opposite off the 22-yard cricket strip; fooling around with his teammates and having a blast from time to time even during training sessions. In the past, his ardent fans have often been treated with Kohli's funny side; imitating his Team India players with perfection. So far, Kohli has imitated the body language and playing style of many superstar cricketers, such as MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Harbhajan Singh, Shikhar Dhawan, Ishant Sharma, Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor, etc.

The above video illustrates that while Kohli might be a passionate and aggressive cricketer on the field, he likes to have fun with his teammates off the 22-yard cricket strip and leaves the worries of the game behind him once stepping out of the field.

After Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bowed out of the IPL 2021 edition, on Monday (October 11), the Indian captain will now gear up for leading the Men in Blue -- for the last time in the shortest format -- in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE, from October 17.

Virat Kohli is the biggest name in world cricket in the modern-era. The 32-year-old broke into the scene at the highest level in 2008 and was a part of the MS Dhoni-led Indian team which won the 2011 ODI World Cup at home.

From MSD to Hitman: How Virat Kohli left fans in splits with his flawless imitation of Team India players

Veteran Indian pacer Ishant Sharma had an underwhelming performance at the Headingly. The 32-year-old was the only pacer to have gone wicketless during the third Test between India and England.

He received criticism after conceding 92 runs in 22 overs at an economy rate of 4.18. Now, former India pacer Ashish Nehra said that he was surprised by the flak Sharma was receiving after just one poor match.

“It will be too harsh on Ishant Sharma if we judge and discuss his place in the side after just one Test match. Somebody asked me yesterday, was Headingley Test Ishant Sharma’s last? I was very surprised that somebody even asked me that question,” Nehra said during a select media interaction organised by Sony Sports Network ahead of the fourth Test match at The Oval starting on Thursday.

“You can’t judge someone like an Ishant Sharma on one game performance. Yes, we have good four-five bowlers and there is a competition there but you don’t want to see a different bowler in every Test match,” he added.

Nehra went on to say that India did not lose the Headingly Test because of Ishant Sharma, however, agreed that the pacer was not at his best.

“Ishant is someone who bowls a no-ball here and there so do Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja. Yes, according to me, Ishant Sharma wasn’t looking in the best of the rhythms. We lost that test match so we are discussing that more. Ishant’s rhythm was not the reason we lost it. But don’t forget he missed the first game because of a niggle. In the second, it took him a while but because of experience of playing more than 100 Tests, he got back to his groove quickly and had a good Lord’s Test,” Nehra added.

“Because of conditions in Oval, we might Ashwin get a game in place of a fast bowler, whether it is in place of Ishant or Siraj, only time will tell,” Nehra said.

Thakur sustained an injury on his left hamstring and was ruled out of the Test and Ashwin was considered as the main bowler who would replace him, but the team went ahead with Ishant Sharma.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli explained the reason behind it.

“We announced 12 within the group and Ashwin definitely was part of that. But after looking at the pitch, the conditions and considering how a fourth seamer can be an attacking option, this makes the most sense for us as a team,” Kohli said at the toss when asked about the reasons for not picking Ashwin.

Earlier, Skipper Kohli had mentioned in the pre-match press conference that they will not be looking for an extra batting option while replacing Thakur.

“Everyone wants to contribute, it's about getting into the game as a batsman. We just need to get the job done, whoever it is, that's our main focus. Especially with crowds back in, it's a pleasure to be here. An honour to play in front of crowds for what should be a cracker,” Kohli said.

'Makes most sense for us': Virat Kohli explains reason behind choosing Ishant Sharma over R Ashwin

Simon Doull has explained the reasons for the Indian pacers' struggle on Day 3 of the World Test Championship final against New Zealand.

Doull said that Jasprit Bumrah and other Indian bowlers aren't genuine swing bowlers and rely more upon seam movement, hence couldn't match with their rivals in that ability.

India got two wickets from 49 overs on Sunday, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ishant Sharma being the wicket-takers. Both Bumrah and Ishant looked flat with the new ball while Mohammed Shami looked in rhythm as the first change yet was unfortunate on most events.

Doull likewise added that he expected some more seam movement from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, yet they simply weren't adequately predictable.

In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Simon Doull said: "They are not genuine swing bowlers. We know Jasprit Bumrah can swing the ball, Ishant is more of a swing bowler nowadays, coming round-the-wicket he has that angled wrist with which he takes the ball away from the left-handers, into the right-handers. Mohammed Shami has never really been a genuine swing bowler and he's a seam bowler. That's why they weren't swinging the ball much. I did, however, expected the ball to seam a lot more. Shami and Bumrah at times found it but they probably weren't just consistent enough much like New Zealand weren't yesterday morning."

New Zealand scored 116 runs at the fall of two wickets Tom Latham and Devon Conway. Captain Kane Williamson is standing firm at the close by experienced batsman Ross Taylor.

When asked whether the absence of match practice influenced India's build-up in the WTC final, Doull said that this rationale was presumably overthinking. He referred to New Zealand's two-match series against England which helped them with match-readiness, adding that he expected something similar from Team India. :

"New Zealand went into the first Test at Lord's against England, they had the very same preparation that India had coming into this Test - intra-squad matches, training, practices - and they looked pretty set and ready to go. Tim Southee bowled beautifully and Devon Conway came off ten days of the net session into a double hundred at Lord's. And I thought India would be exactly the same. I think at times you may overthink it and say, 'Did they have enough preparation?' I think they probably did. I am sure in the last 10-12 days they would have bowled enough deliveries to make sure they were raring to go."

Simon Doull, nonetheless, additionally conceded that the lack of proper match practice has its own results.

"It's hard, though, when you can't simulate match practice. You try it in these intra-squad games but it just doesn't work. And that's the key - it's the genuinely hard match practice that makes you better and gets you ready for those matchups" - he concluded.

WTC Final: Not genuine swing bowlers - Simon Doull explains Indian pacers' struggles

Ajit Agarkar has named Mohammed Shami as his first pick in Team India's pace department for the World Test Championship final against New Zealand.

There has been a great deal of hypothesis about India's decision of seamers for the title decider. A spilled brief snippet of Virat Kohli saying he will focus on the Kiwis left-handers with Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj working around the wicket has been doing the rounds.

Also read: Football: Spain coach Luis Enrique wants fans to stop booing players

During a conversation on Star Sports, Ajit Agarkar picked Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Ishant Sharma as his favored seam department for Team India.

"The seamers will play a part and India has got as formidable an attack as any in the world. I think that's been their strength over the last few years. Whether it is a Bumrah, Shami - the No.1 bowler for me for a Test line-up for India and Ishant Sharma, he has gotten better over his career as he has played" - he said

He brought up that the Virat Kohli-drove side can even pick to play the fourth seamer in the event that it is a green top.

"So, those three certainly will start and if it is a green seaming wicket, you might see a fourth one for all you know. We still don't know what the conditions are likely to be but we presume in England, with the Dukes' ball, in particular, there will always be helpful for the seam bowlers. You can't imagine a pitch being very dry in mid-June" - he added.

Team India is probably going to play Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja alongside three pace bowlers, except if the conditions are shifted intensely for the seamers. Shardul Thakur may very well push out Mohammed Siraj if India ends up playing the fourth seamer to add some profundity to the batting line-up.

While expressing that the two sides will tingle to be the victors of the debut ICC World Test Championship, Ajit Agarkar was especially energetic about Team India making the last in the wake of being gone up against with a tough assignment at one phase.

"It is a big deal. Everyone remembers the first person to get to any sort of landmark and that's what makes it special. So, to be involved and particularly in the middle when the rules changed, the percentages came into play when India was way ahead at one point, they still had to get the job done. Both teams will be up for it and both teams will be very excited to be a part of it" - he said.

Ishant Sharma is on the cusp of scripting history as he will become the second Indian pacer, after Kapil Dev, to play 100 Test matches if he starts in the pink-ball Test against England, starting from February 24 at the world’s largest cricket stadium – Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Ishant, who only plays Test cricket for India now, has said that the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) is like a World Cup to him while adding he wants Team India to play the finals against New Zealand scheduled to be held later in 2021 in England. While the third Test against England will be Ishant’s 100th Test for India, the veteran pacer had earlier become the third Indian speedster to have scalped 300 wickets in the longest format of the game. World Test Championship is like a 'World Cup' for me: Ishant Sharma ahead of his 100th Test match for India

On the sidelines of a Ranji Trophy game in 2019, Ishant Sharma had called himself 'the last flicker in a lamp' while politely making his reluctance known to three scribes, who had approached the self-effacing beanpole for an interaction.

Ishant was then standing at 96 Tests. Nearly 14 months later, during which he missed five Tests due to an injury, Indian cricket's most adorable 'lambu' is shining bright.

He is on course to become only the second Indian fast bowler, after the great Kapil Dev, to complete 100 Tests for the country.

'Arre yaar mera interview karke kya karogey? Main toh bujhta huya diya hoon (Why do you want to interview me? I am like the last flicker in a lamp),' Ishant had said at the Kotla.

In terms of sheer talent and craft, Ishant wouldn't be in the same league as Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Shami or Javagal Srinath but with his longevity, he has proved that 'workhorse' isn't exactly an abused word, which is used to sum up the veteran pacer.

'I think I will say this with certainty...,' former India wicketkeeper and Ishant's ex-Delhi teammate and coach Vijay Dahiya said.

'Ishant will be the last Indian fast bowler to play 100 Test matches. I don't see anyone playing 100 Tests. With majority of the fast bowlers preserving themselves for IPL and white ball games, it will be increasingly difficult to play 100 Tests for India,' Dahiya made a statement.

Ishant's mate for the last 16 years, current Delhi captain Pradeep Sangwan felt that even when Virat Kohli and Ishant attended Delhi's U-17 trials, he looked a class apart.

'He was so tall and that long flowing mane of his, we used to pull his leg and tease him, 'dekh le bhai, lamba Shah Rukh aa gaya (watch out brothers, the tall Shah Rukh has come (referring to the actor),' Sangwan said.

'But then even during those U-17 days, he was so tall and generated so much pace, you knew that he was special. And if you see when Virat was leading us at the 2008 U-19 World Cup, Ishant was already a Test player by then and didn't need to play that tournament.' His first 79 Test matches yielded 226 wickets and the last 20 fetched him 76 scalps, which shows how the man from West Delhi's Patel Nagar moulded himself according to the team's needs.

Ishant, as well as the current crop of Indian fast bowling line-up's most memorable three years, started in 2018 in South Africa with the introduction of Jasprit Bumrah in the Test arena.

'MS used him as a defensive bowler who would hold one end up. Ishant was his man to do the job. You know why he has lasted this long: because it's very important to know what your leader wants and deliver accordingly,' Dahiya said.

'He wasn't the wicket-taking bowler but kudos to him, he did the job of bowling 20 plus overs a day with elan, which primarily the spinners do in Tests,' he added.

It's his hardwork and ability to maintain fitness standards that allows him to bowl those 8 to 9 over spells Test after Test.

'He was bowling those 8 to 9 overs spells at 18 years at a pace of 140 plus. Today he is nearing 33 and he is still bowling those long spells consistently in late 130 kmph and cranking it up to 140 kmph at times,' said Sangwan.

First-class cricket has its own set of benefits but there are a few pitfalls, too, and often the example of former England batsman Graeme Hick is cited. Hick played seven years of county cricket before international level and by then, according to experts, the 'bad habits of domestic cricket had crept into his system'.

'Best part about Ishant was that he escaped that grind of first-class cricket and was fast-tracked pretty early.

'The moment a fast bowler is stuck for three plus years in Ranji Trophy, he can stagnate, compromise for pace and also lack quality from the other end. Ishant didn't have to endure that,' said Dahiya, who was also the pacer's senior team coach.

Ishant is probably someone who doesn't feel the need to be funny, interjected Sangwan, narrating an incident during their U-19 days.

'It was Delhi U-19 trials and as you know in DDCA, one approach-wala chap (a typical Delhi term used for back-door entry of boys with influential parents) was thrust upon the sports committee for trials.

'Sunil Dev, who was then the sports secretary, was so angry that he came up to us and told Ishant and myself 'if that fellow scores 20, you two will be out of the team'.

'Ishant was like 'sir, humari kya galti hai ki, isko trials pe bulaya (sir, what is our fault that he has ben called for trials)'.' Dev was unyielding but then, Ishant and Sangwan got him out four or five times and also embarrassed him with a barrage of short balls, which hit him on the ribs. Recalling that story, Sangwan chuckled.

While former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie sorted his wrist position at Sussex, Ishant remains a nightmare for keepers even after playing so many matches. Ask Wriddhiman Saha, who finds Ishant the most difficult to keep as the seam wobbles.

Dahiya, who is known for his self-deprecating humour, hit the parting shot.

'I still tell Ishant that it was his late movement that led to my early retirement as he was young and I was ageing. I tell him tune mere budhaape mein maze le liye (You enjoyed at the expense of my old age).'

On the cusp of 100th Test, Delhi's 'lambu' stands tall

India on Monday reached 39/1 at day four stumps after spinner Jack Leach bowled Rohit Sharma for 12 on a deteriorating Chennai track. India, chasing 420, will resume their innings on day five with Shubman Gill (15*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (12*) at the crease.

Earlier on the day, Ravichandran Ashwin scalped six wickets to bundle out England for 178 with the visitors setting a target of 420.

On a spinner-dominant day, Ashwin picked up his 28th five-wicket haul in England's second innings. The veteran spinner had sent Rory Burns back in the first ball of the innings before striking crucial blows including Ben Stokes.

England skipper Joe Root continued his rich run of form as he scored 40 off 32 balls. He hit 218 in the first innings in what is his 100th Test for England.

Indian spinner Shahbaz Nadeem grabbed two wickets while Dan Lawrence was Ishant Sharma's 300th Test wicket.

Commenting on the achievement, Ishant said: "It's been quite a roller-coaster life. I've had a lot of experience, a lot of mentors who taught me how to bowl in the subcontinent and how to bowl abroad. 300 Test wickets! Ishant Sharma joins elusive list as he achieves iconic landmark

Ajinkya Rahane is a “bowler’s captain” whose calm leadership will come in handy in India’s bid to bounce back in the four-test series against Australia, seamer Ishant Sharma said.

Regular skipper Virat Kohli left Australia to attend the birth of his first child after India’s eight-wicket humiliation in the series-opener in Adelaide inside three days.

Unlike an often-animated Kohli, Rahane maintains a low profile on the field and the bowlers are likely to be consulted more in the last three tests under him, said Ishant.

“He’s very confident and I must say he’s a bowler’s captain,” the right-arm bowler, who missed the tour with a side strain injury, told the ESPNcricinfo website.

“We’ve played so many times together. Whenever Virat was not there, he’d ask me ‘What kind of field you want? When you want to bowl? Do you want to go on (bowling)?’

“He’s a bowler’s captain. He’s not someone who’d say ‘do this or do that’.”

The 32-year-old quick said Rahane, who led India to test victories against Australia and Afghanistan in the past, often acts as a conduit between the bowlers and Kohli.

While it was nearly impossible to match Kohli’s energy on the field, Rahane’s composed presence could help India during pressure situations, Ishant said.

“If there’s a partnership growing and it’s a flat phase when fielders are just going through their motions, one player’s energy level can change the scenario,” he said.

India suffered a mammoth collapse on Day 3 and the last batsman to fall was Mohammad Shami as the player was struck by Cummins on the forearm and was forced to retire hurt.

As per some reports, Shami suffered a fractured arm. According to news agency ANI, Shami has been ruled out of the Test series, though an official confirmation on the same from BCCI is still awaited.

India's former skipper Sunil Gavaskar said that Shami's absence will be a big blow for Team India. “It (Shami injury) is a big problem. he has the knack of taking wickets, he can shock the opposition with his bouncers and yorkers. If he is not playing, then it’s going to be trouble for India,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

Gavaskar went as far as to suggest that India should immediately bring in Ishant Sharma if he is fit. “If Ishant Sharma is fit, I am suggesting to send him to Australia now. If he is capable of bowling 20 overs in a day, the management should send him to Australia on tomorrow’s flight so that he can be ready for the Sydney Test,” he said.

“I am saying India should look at taking a chance because there is no proper back-up now. Navdeep Saini has the potential to pick wickets but the way he bowled in the warm-up matches, it doesn’t look like he will be able to trouble the Australia batsmen,” he further added.

India will take on Australia for the Boxing Day Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

'If Ishant Sharma is fit, send him now', says Sunil Gavaskar after injured Shami ruled out of Test series

India suffered a blow Friday with fast bowler Ishant Sharma ruled out of their Test series against Australia, as skipper Virat Kohli blasted a lack of clarity over the fate of star opener Rohit Sharma.

Ishant has been struggling with a side strain picked up during the Indian Premier League, and while he has recovered officials said he was not match fit.

"While he's building up his workload in order to achieve Test match fitness, Ishant Sharma has been ruled out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy," the Indian cricket board said in a statement.

Senior batsman Rohit hurt his hamstring last month and will have another assessment on December 11, six days before the opening day-night Test in Adelaide.

Complicating matters was his father falling ill in Mumbai, which delayed Rohit's arrival at India's National Cricket Academy to begin his rehab.

Kohli said the way the matter had been handled was "very confusing" and that both players should be in Australia to complete their recoveries.

"It definitely would have increased the chances of both of them playing Test matches," he said in video comments from his hotel room in Sydney ahead of the opening one-dayer against Australia on Friday.

Kohli, who has been undergoing a mandatory 14-day quarantine along with the rest of the India squad, said he was expecting Rohit to be on the plane to Australia with everyone else.

"We had no information whatsoever on the reason why he's not travelling with us," said the skipper, who will return home after the opening Test for the birth of his first child.

"And after that, the only other information officially we've received by mail is that he's in the NCA and he's been assessed and he'll be further assessed on December 11.

"So from the time that the selection meeting happened to the IPL finishing and now when this email came about his assessment in the NCA, there's been no information.

"There's been a lack of clarity and we've been playing the waiting game on this issue for a while now which is not ideal at all. So it's been very confusing and there's been a lot of uncertainty and a lack of clarity around the situation."

India play four Tests against Australia in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane following their six-match limited overs series.

Ishant Sharma out of Australia series as Kohli blasts 'confusing' messages

Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma have been ruled out of the first two Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will have to make quick calls if they want Rohit and Ishant to be available for the last two Tests of the series, which will start on December 16 in Adelaide.

According to ESPNCricinfo, Ishant has regained bowling fitness but still needs another four weeks of workload to be up for the Tests and will have to board immediately to be in contention for the third Test.

The strict quarantine phase of 14 days in Australia allows them to train only after four weeks and then another four weeks of preparatory training can only make Ishant ready for the third Test, which will be played on January 7 in Sydney.

"If there is a T20 game and he needs to just bowl four overs, Ishant is good to go immediately, but for him to get back to Test-match fitness, he needs four weeks of proper bowling still," a BCCI source said.

Whereas, Rohit Sharma can be cleared to travel by the NCA on December 8 – at the earliest. Another 14 days in quarantine will keep him out of training until December 22.

Rohit had suffered a hamstring tear during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 and will take another two weeks of rehabilitation to be “70 or 80% readiness”, as per a BCCI functionary. The official feels Rohit might have been ready for the Tests had he flown directly to Australia from the UAE.

After IPL 2020, Rohit Sharma begins fitness training at NCA

Pacer Ishant Sharma is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that he is fit in time for the Test series against Australia that gets underway with the day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval on December 17. Having worked under the watchful eyes of Paras Mhambrey ever since hitting the National Cricket Academy (NCA), the fast bowler underwent a fitness test on Wednesday.

ESPN Cricinfo tweeted a video of Ishant in which the fast bowler can be seen going through the passes. "Ishant Sharma bowls at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as he looks to prove his fitness for India`s Test series against Australia," ESPN Cricinfo wrote.

With India skipper Virat Kohli available only for the first of the four-Test matches against Australia, there is no doubt that the bowlers will have to take up the extra responsibility of giving India the best chances of winning the series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on November 9 said that Ishant, who is out with a left internal oblique muscle tear, is undergoing his rehab and he will be added to India`s Test squad once he "fully recovers and gains sufficient match fitness".

On Monday, ANI reported that NCA head Rahul Dravid has taken charge to ensure that Ishant works closely with Mhambrey -- the head coach of the U-19 national team and also a pace bowler during his playing days."

As NCA head, Dravid has informed the board that Ishant is working with Mhambrey to be fit in time for the Test matches. Ishant will definitely have a big role to play and his presence will not just give India another strike bowler, but also his experience will bring a lot to the table in Kohli`s absence," a source in the know of developments had said.

Unfortunately, Ishant`s stint at the NCA last time round didn`t go as per plan. The pacer suffered a Grade 3 tear on his right ankle while playing for Delhi in their Ranji Trophy encounter against Vidarbha at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in January 2020. While it was believed he was out of the New Zealand tour as he was prescribed rest for six weeks by the Delhi physio, he hit the NCA and was passed by the fitness team in Bengaluru to join the Indian squad for the two-Test series, starting February 21.

While Ishant did play the first Test, the ankle injury resurfaced and he had to skip the second Test of the series. The coronavirus-induced lockdown ensured that he had time to work on his body and get back strong for the 13th edition of the IPL for Delhi Capitals. But he again injured himself and had to fly back. '

With Dravid keeping an eye on developments, one would believe that a repeat of the February episode won`t take place as India need Ishant to play the full series.

The Indian squad has already arrived in Australia post the IPL and have started training for the limited-overs series which starts with the first ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground on November 27. The two teams will also play a T20I series after the completion of the three-match ODI series.
