Iraq: Bus collision in Baghdad kills 18, most victims were Iranian pilgrims

Iraq has hanged three people convicted for a 2016 bombing that killed more than 320 people in a Baghdad shopping district and was claimed by the Islamic State group, the prime minister's office said on Monday.

The bombing was one of the world's deadliest after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

At least 323 people were killed in the car bombing that sparked raging fires in Baghdad's Karrada shopping area early on July 3, 2016 as it teemed with people ahead of the Eid al-Fitr festival ending the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, during a meeting with victims' families, informed them "the rightful punishment of death sentence was carried out against three key criminals found guilty of their involvement in the terrorist bombing", his office said in a statement.

It was one of the deadliest attacks to ever hit Iraq.

Police Major General Talib Khalil Rahi said at the time that the bomber's minibus had been loaded with plastic explosives and ammonium nitrate.

The initial blast killed a limited number of people, but flames spread and trapped people inside shopping centres which lacked emergency exits, Rahi told a news conference a few days later.

Iraqi authorities issued an order to shut down LED advertisement screens throughout Baghdad following a brazen hack that displayed explicit content. The incident occurred at the heart of the Iraqi capital, Uqba bin Nafia Square, where a hacker managed to project a pornographic film for several minutes before being halted by security forces. This scandalous act, shared widely on social media, forced the authorities to take immediate action.

The provocative hack

On Saturday evening (August 19), an unidentified individual successfully breached the security of an advertising screen in Uqba bin Nafia Square, causing explicit content to be displayed to passersby. The security source, who opted for anonymity, revealed that the hacker's stunt was stopped only after the power cable was disconnected. Shocking videos of the incident circulating on social media ignited public outrage.

Iraq blocks Telegram messaging app over national security concerns

Foreign ministers of Iraq and Kuwait said on Sunday (July 30) that the countries will work towards reaching a definitive agreement about demarcating their land as well as the contested maritime area of the Gulf. This comes as the countries have sought to solve the decades-long issues dating back to Saddam Hussein’s 1990 invasion of the oil-rich country.

What was discussed?

The Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein following the discussions with his Kuwaiti counterpart Salem Al-Sabah in Baghdad on Sunday, said that during their talks they emphasised “on resolving the border issues”.

He also spoke about how the border talks would “continue through various technical committees”. Reportedly, the two countries have also sought to resolve disputes over joint oilfields.

The Iraqi capital city will also host a meeting of a legal committee relating to the talks on August 14 which will also reportedly be followed by a visit from Kuwaiti Oil Minister Saad Al Barrak on September 10.

Meanwhile, Al-Sabah reaffirmed that there was “complete consensus” between Kuwait and Iraq to “resolve outstanding problems between the two countries, particularly the demarcation of maritime boundaries”.

This comes as the Iraqi government under Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani has sought closer ties with Arab Gulf monarchies in a bid to strengthen regional economic cooperation and counter the flow of narcotics.

What is the decades-long border issue about?

The talks on Sunday also came after Iraq in 2021, made the final payment of war reparations for the damage inflicted to its neighbour amounting to $52 billion. In August 1990, Saddam’s forces invaded the oil-rich country and annexed it.

Months later, an international coalition led by the United States drove Saddam’s forces out of Kuwait. Since then, both countries have been meeting to solve their border issues but have made very little progress.

The land border between the neighbouring states was established by the United Nations in 1993, years after Iraq under Saddam invaded Kuwait. While the officials in Baghdad have previously expressed readiness to recognise Kuwait’s land border, the maritime border remains a point of contention.

This comes as Iraq says that the delineation should provide it unhindered access to Gulf waters which is said to be a lifeline for its economy as well as oil exports.

However, given the decades-long dispute, Kuwaiti coastguards regularly detain Iraqi fishermen and seize their vessels for entering Kuwaiti territorial waters “illegally”.

Meanwhile, Iraqi fishermen have complained of harassment by Kuwaiti fishermen and have alleged that they do not respect maritime boundaries.

Unlike other farmers whose crops have been destroyed by Iraq’s scorching heat this summer, a date farmer decided to find an opportunity in this crisis. The intense heat accelerates date ripening, enhancing yield quality. Drought and extreme temperatures have rendered large parts of Iraq virtually uninhabitable during summer months. Recent years have seen record temperatures, exceeding 52 degrees Celsius.

An ancient stone tablet from the Assyrian empire was unveiled by Iraq, on Sunday (June 18) after being returned by Italy as Baghdad moves to recover antiquities looted from its territory. The recently recovered artefact is said to be a 2,800-year-old stone tablet and would be returned to Iraq’s National Museum in Baghdad.

What we know about the tablet

The stone tablet dates back to the Assyrian empire and is marked with the insignia of Shalmaneser III, the Assyrian king who ruled the region of Nimrod (present-day northern Iraq), from 858 to 823 BC. The text on the tablet is said to be written in cuneiform which is the Babylonian alphabet.

Shalmaneser III is said to be one of the greatest Assyrian Kings in the Assyrian state in the north of Iraq “which is of great importance for several reasons,” said the Iraqi Minister of Culture, Ahmed al-Badrani speaking at the Baghdad presidential palace.

He also went on to explain how during the Sumerian civilisation, clay tablets were used as it was easier to write on them but the Assyrian civilization used to engrave stones which is much more difficult to do.

From Italy to Iraq stone tablet returned

It was not clear how Italian authorities agreed to handover the stone tablet back to Baghdad except it was given to Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid during a visit to Bologna over the past week.

“We have with us this important artefact, that was in Italy for a long time, we brought it back with us and are handing it over to Iraq’s national museum,” said Rashid, on Sunday, during the ceremony.

He added, “I would like to thank the Italian officials for their efforts and cooperation in bringing back this piece.” According to the Director of Baghdad’s council of antiquities and heritage, the tablet had arrived in the 1980s in Italy, where it was seized by police.

However, the circumstances behind its discovery were unclear, said al-Badrani. Speaking at the event, on Sunday, the Iraqi president also said that they would continue to work to recover all the archaeological pieces of Iraqi history from across the world. Notably, the country’s antiquities have reportedly been the target of looting which increased after the chaos following the United States-led invasion two decades ago.
