Reuters reported that while the media was kept out of the court session, a lawyer who was present for the proceedings, revealed that Hamdawi did not say anything in the court in response to the judge's ruling.

Hashemi, who, as per AFP, was a well-respected academic and an expert on jihadist groups, was gunned down by gunmen on motorcycles outside his home in Baghdad in July 2020. The murder sparked outrage across Iraq and invited condemnation from several Western countries as well as the United Nations.

One year after the murder, Iraqi state television aired the alleged confession of the mastermind behind the attack. It identified the alleged mastermind by his full name, Ahmed Hamdawi Oueid al-Kenani.

Hamdawi, who was a police lieutenant at that time, admitted to shooting Hashemi with a pistol and also confessed to being the leader of the group that killed Hashemi.

As per AFP, back in 2020, a security source had disclosed that the suspect in Hashemi's murder was believed to have ties to the influential pro-Iranian group Kataeb Hezbollah — which Hashemi had previously criticised in his writings and media comments.

'Even the presence of one American in Iraq is too much': Iran leader Khamenei tells Iraqi president

The presence of even one American soldier in Iraq, according to Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei, is "too much," and Western military interventions are to blame for the region's unrest. The statement was made while Abdul Latif Rashid, the president of Iraq, was in Iran for extensive talks on Saturday.

An Iranian court sentenced 10 members of the armed forces to prison after they were found guilty of their involvement in the crash of a Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) jet, reported the judiciary’s Mizan Online website, on Sunday (April 16). The downing of the Ukrainian airliner resulted in the death of all 176 people on board.

What was the verdict?

According to the report by Mizan, a commander received 10 years in prison while the sentencing for the nine others ranged between one to three years. The verdict also closes the trial which Iran’s judiciary said it opened back in November 2021 for 10 military personnel connected with the Ukrainian jet’s downing.

What happened back in 2020?

In 2020, UIA flight PS752 was shot down by two missiles moments after its takeoff from Tehran on January 8. The incident led to the death of all 176 people on board which included mostly Iranians and Canadians. Initially, Tehran had claimed that the Kyiv-bound passenger plane had crashed and was not until three days later that the Iranian armed forces admitted to downing the plane “by mistake”.

According to reports, the Iranian air defence said that they accidentally downed the Boeing 737 after mistaking it for an incoming missile. Tehran had later called it a “disastrous mistake” by forces who were on high alert, at the time of the incident as tensions between Iran and the United States were soaring.

The Iranian forces were anticipating a US counterattack after Tehran fired missiles at a military base in Iraq that was used by American forces. However, the claims of “human error” made by the Islamic Republic have been questioned by Ukraine, Canada, and various organisations as well as observers.

A report by the Iranian Civil Aviation Organization blamed the incident on the misalignment of a radar system and a lack of communication between the air defence operator and his commanders. However, Ukraine and Canada have rejected these claims, reported Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Among those killed were citizens of Afghanistan, Britain, Canada, Germany, Iran, Sweden, and Ukraine.

In a series of public statements, on Sunday (April 2), Saudi Arabia and other OPEC+ members announced that they would further reduce oil production amounting to around 1.16 million barrels per day. The move, according to the countries, is aimed at market stability. The announcement comes a day before a virtual meeting of an OPEC+ ministerial panel is to convene, reported Reuters.

The unexpected cuts announced by Saudi Arabia, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Algeria, and Oman will begin in May and will last till the end of the year with more than one million barrels per day it will be the biggest reduction since the last one when the oil producers slashed two million barrels per day in October.

The move also comes after oil prices dropped last month to $70 per barrel which was the lowest in 15 months and following concerns that a global banking crisis would affect demand. However, following the pledges on Sunday, the oil prices are expected to surge by at least $10 per barrel, said the head of investment firm Pickering Energy Partners, as per Reuters.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) which includes Saudi Arabia and Russia made the announcement in a series of public statements by different countries and called the move a “precautionary measure”. The statements came a day before OPEC+ is due to hold its Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee meeting virtually, on Monday.

Similarly, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, said that Moscow will extend its voluntary oil production reduction by 500,000 barrels per day until the end of this year. This also comes after Moscow had previously announced production cuts unilaterally in February following Western price caps on Russian oil.

“As responsible and preemptive actions, Russia will extend its voluntary oil production reduction by 500,000 barrels a day until the end of 2023 from the average production level in February established in conformity with independent sources,” said Novak. The Russian minister also talked about how the global oil market is going through a period of high volatility and unpredictability due to the recent banking crisis in the United States and Europe.

Notably, not all OPEC+ members were joining the cuts as many are already extracting much less than the levels agreed upon due to limited production capacity. OPEC+ consists of 13 members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and 11 non-OPEC allied countries.

Production cuts announced by OPEC+ members, as per their official statements:

Russia: 500,000 bpd
Saudi Arabia: 500,000 bpd
UAE: 144,000 bpd
Kuwait: 128,000 bpd
Kazakhstan: 78,000 bpd
Algeria: 48,000 bpd
Oman: 40,000 bpd

According to Reuters calculations, the total volume of cuts by the OPEC+ members would be 3.66 million bpd which amounts to 3.7 per cent of the global demand. This also comes months after OPEC+ had agreed to slash output by two million bdp from the following month, a move which was criticised by the United States as lower supply increased the price of oil.

Washington has also argued that the world needs lower prices to prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin from earning revenue and funding what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Iraqi lawmakers, on Monday (March 27), passed controversial amendments to the elections law which are said to have weakened the chances for smaller parties and independent candidates to win seats in future polls. The country has been facing unrest over the issues surrounding its political system which many have called corrupt.

More than 560 protesters and security personnel have lost their lives since 2019 amid the wave of unrest, reported Reuters. The amendments increase the size of electoral districts and reverse key articles passed ahead of the 2021 federal election which would now lead to redrawing of electoral maps to have Iraq return to one electoral district per each governorate.

The bill was passed by a 206-12 vote in the 329-seat parliament, while others were absent during the hours-long session. The vote which began late Sunday had previously been stalled for weeks by several Iraqi political blocs and independent parliamentarians who have rejected this amendment.

Independent MPs who objected to the law, staged a walkout during the previous session, causing it to be postponed over a lack of quorum. The lawmakers opposing the bills did something similar overnight as they began protesting and disturbed the count before security forces escorted them out of the parliament, reported Al Jazeera.

“Large parties controlling parliament plan to consolidate their powers and remove independents. They want to smash us,” said independent MP Hadi al-Salami, as per Reuters. The amendments also come after anti-government protests which demanded fairer election law and the ouster of Iraq’s ruling elite. According to media reports, on Saturday, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Baghdad against the new election law amendments.

20 years ago, on the 20th of March, 2002, U.S. troops invaded Iraq after then-U.S. President George W. Bush accused Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein of possessing 'Massive Stockpile' of weapons of mass destruction. Those weapons were never found, but millions of futures were lost in that war in Iraq. Listen in Vikram Chandra.

This World | Iraq war: 20 years on | Were the weapons of mass destruction ever found?

It has been 20 years since the U.S. Launched the Iraq invasion to overthrow the country’s dictator Saddam Hussein. But the killings and internal conflict continue, with no respite in the sufferings of a common man in Iraq.

India and Iraq have strengthened their security ties during the visit of Iraq's National Security Adviser (NSA) Qasem AI-Araji to India. The visit marked the first cabinet minister-level visit from Iraq to India in seven years. Both sides have agreed to enhance defence cooperation, counter-terrorism efforts, and strengthen security linkages. On Friday, Indian NSA Ajit Doval and the Iraqi NSA held extensive discussions on vast areas of mutual interest and exchanged views on recent developments in their respective regions.

Apart from security ties, India and Iraq also have a strong economic relationship, with Iraq being the largest supplier of oil to India since 2017 and the fifth-largest trade partner of India. Indian companies have significant opportunities in the upstream, mid, and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry in Iraq.

During his visit, the Iraqi NSA visited Bharat Electronics Limited to witness examples of the "Make in India" initiative and interacted with Indian defence industry leaders.

A second camp is being planned shortly. It is estimated that around 33,000 Iraqis travel to India, mostly for medical treatment, fetching an estimated $170 million to Indian hospitals, second after Bangladesh.

There is also a historical connection between the peoples of the two countries. Many Indian pilgrims visit the holy shrines in Najaf and Karbala and that of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani in Baghdad every year. The visit of the Iraqi NSA to India paves way for increased cooperation and engagement between the two countries, not only in the area of security but also in various other sectors.

Iraqi prime minister's office said on Sunday (March 19) that Iran's top security official has signed a deal with Iraqi authorities for "protection" of their common border. The development has taken place months after Tehran conducted strikes on Kurdish opposition group in northern Iraq.

Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region hosts camps and rear-bases operated by several Iranian Kurdish factions, which Iran has accused of serving Western or Israeli interests in the past.

Iran launched cross-border missile and drone strikes against Kurdish groups in November. It accused them if stoking nationwide protests after the death of Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini.

Ali Shamkhani, who heads Iran's Supreme National Security Council, inked the deal with his Iraqi counterpart Qassem al-Araji during a visit to Baghdad, the statement said.

It comprises "coordination over the protection of common borders", and will also see the "strengthening of cooperation in several areas of security", the statement from the office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani added.

Shamkhani denounced "vicious activities by counter-revolutionary elements" in northern Iraq, a reference to the Kurdish groups operating in the country, according to Iran's state news agency IRNA.

He said the agreement signed on Sunday "can completely and fundamentally end the vicious actions of these groups," which the Iranian government labels "terrorist."

Iran, Iraq ink deal for protection of borders, cooperation in areas of security

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the U.S invasion of Iraq. The war toppled the rule of dictator Saddam Hussein. It drew condemnation from nations across the world but the U.S justified it saying that Hussein had possessed weapons of mass destruction but now poll has revealed that the majority of American citizens believe that the invasion was unjustified.

U.S. Defence secretary made an unannounced visit to Iraq this week, just days before the 20th anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. Austin said he hoped to 'strengthen and broaden' relations with Iraq.

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin visits Iraq, vows defence support against Islamic State

Iraq's customs department on Saturday (March 4) gave orders to start enforcement of alcohol import ban. A law in this regard was passed last month. There were divisions over it.

But the specialist retail stores that dominate alcohol sales in the virtual absence of bars or licensed restaurants remained open for business, at least in Baghdad, as reported by AFP.

Consumption of alcohol in public is frowned upon in Muslim-majority Iraq but it can be readily purchased from liquor shops. Many of them are run by members of non-Muslim communities.

The new legislation, which bans the sale, import or production of alcohol, was originally approved by parliament in 2016 but only became law following its publication in the official gazette on February 20.

"The General Customs Authority has given orders to all customs centres to ban the entry of all types of alcoholic drink," the authority said in a statement.

The new law sets fines of between 10 million and 25 million dinars ($7,700-$19,000) for violations.

But it contradicts a government decree adopted less than a week earlier on February 14, setting duty at 200 percent on all imported alcoholic drinks for the next four years.

Iraq customs gives orders to ban alcohol import

Iraq's customs agency received orders on Saturday to begin implementing a prohibition on the entry of alcohol, despite disagreements over the legislation.

Nonetheless, the specialty retail outlets that dominate alcohol sales in the virtual absence of bars or restaurants with permits continued to operate, at least in Baghdad, according to AFP.

The new legislation imposes fines for violations of between 10 million and 25 million dinars ($7,700-$19,000).

Yet, it is in opposition to a government order that was approved less than a week earlier on February 14, which imposed a levy of 200 per cent on all imported alcoholic beverages for the following four years.

The proposal has come under harsh criticism from parliamentarians and human rights advocates who represent Iraq's shrinking non-Muslim minority.

According to MP Duraid Jameel of the Christian group, five members of parliament filed an appeal with the federal Supreme Court earlier this week, claiming that the prohibition was illegal since it did not respect the rights of minorities.

Although the alcohol ban is a federal law, it is unlikely to apply in Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region, which operates its own customs posts on the northern border with Turkey.

An American archeological mission has uncovered the remnants of what is believed to be a 5,000-year-old restaurant in the ancient city of Lagash in southern Iraq.

An ancient restaurant unearthed by archaeologists in Iraq

In southern Iraq, archaeologists discovered the remains of a bar that dates back over 5,000 years, which they think may shed light on everyday life in the first cities. The US-Italian team discovered the artefacts among the ancient Lagash ruins, northeast of the contemporary city of Nasiriyah, which was already known to have been one of the Sumerian civilization's earliest urban centres.

A large oven, dining benches, 150 serving dishes, and the remnants of a prehistoric refrigeration system were also found by the collaborative team from the Universities of Pennsylvania and Pisa.

The bowls had fish and animal bones as well as signs of beer use, which was common among Sumerians.

"So we've got the refrigerator, we've got the hundreds of vessels ready to be served, benches where people would sit... and behind the refrigerator is an oven that would have been used... for cooking food," project director Holly Pittman told AFP.

5,000-year-old pub found in Iraq, remnants of prehistoric refrigeration system unearthed too

Over the last two years, Turkiye has increased its military presence in Iraq. The advances have attracted a little global attention. But lately, the escalations have ignited fears of worsening instability. @ghadifrancis brings you the full report on this week's #TheWestAsiaPost only on @wionews

The West Asia Post: Turkey's push into Iraq risks deeper conflict

West Asia is known to be a volatile region. The volatility is not limited to politics and economics, rights of one gender are taking a slow death. From Mahasa Amini in Iran, Tiba al-Al in Iraq, to Alaa Salah in Sudan - women of West Asia are speaking up. And with them, people are pouring out on the streets, unifying against far-right governments. The road might be long, but it's a hopeful one!

WION Fineprint: How are women standing up to far-right govts?

Iraqi activists protested Sunday (February 5) to demand a law against domestic violence, days after a YouTuber was strangled by her father in a killing that has outraged the conservative country. Tiba al-Ali, 22, was killed by her father on January 31 in the southern province of Diwaniyah, interior ministry spokesman Saad Maan said on Twitter on Friday.

Maan said there had been an attempt to mediate between the young woman and her relatives to resolve a "family dispute". The father later surrendered to the police and confessed to murdering his daughter.

On Sunday, security forces prevented some 20 activists from demonstrating outside the country's Supreme Judicial Council, and they gathered instead at a road leading to the building, an AFP journalist said.

Some held placards saying "Stop killing women" and "Tiba's killer must be held to account".

"We demand laws to protect women, especially laws against domestic violence," 22-year-old protester Rose Hamid told AFP.

"We came here to protest against Tiba's murder and against all others. Who will be the next victim?"

Tiba al-Ali had lived in Turkey since 2017 and was visiting Iraq when she was killed in a case of 'honour killing' for leaving the country to live alone in Turkiye and planning to marry her Syria-born boyfriend, a security official in Diwaniyah told AFP.

In Turkey, she had gained a following on YouTube, posting videos of her daily life in which her fiance often appeared.

Recordings have been shared on social media by a friend of Ali, and picked up by activists, reportedly of conversations with the father, angry because she was living in Turkey.

Though the nature of the dispute wasn’t revealed by the ministry, local media reports stated that Ali fled her home in 2017 to start a new life in Turkey and had planned to wed her Syria-born boyfriend.

When she returned to Iraq to support her country's football team in the Arabian Gulf Cup in January, her family kidnapped her.

It was reported that she was drugged after she arrived in Iraq and taken back to the family home in Al-Qadisiyyah Governorate.

Her father later turned himself to the police, telling them he had killed his daughter to “wash away the shame”.

Meanwhile, social media erupted in an uproar over the death, with several netizens calling for protests in Baghdad on Sunday to demand justice.

“Women in our societies are hostage to backward customs due to the absence of legal deterrents and government measures – which currently are not commensurate with the size of domestic violence crimes,” Ala Talabani, a veteran politician, said on Twitter.

Hanaa Edwar, a human rights activist, told AFP that, according to voice recordings attributed to Ali, “She left her family … because she was sexually assaulted by her brother.”
