Speaking to AFP, a US military official, who chose to remain anonymous, said that alarms had gone off and that "likely impact sounds" could be heard near the US embassy and Union III base, where troops from the international anti-jihadist coalition are stationed.

"We are still awaiting official reports regarding casualties and damage to infrastructure, if any. We are also awaiting official reporting on the type of attack," the official said.

The embassy urged the Iraqi government to protect its diplomats. "We again call on the government of Iraq... to protect diplomatic and coalition partner personnel and facilities," an embassy spokesperson said in a statement.

This is the first attack against the US embassy in Iraq since the Israel-Hamas war started on Oct 7. Since mid-October, there have been several rocket or drone strikes by pro-Iran groups against American or coalition forces, mainly in Syria.

Friday's attack came a day after Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said during a phone call with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Baghdad rejected "any attack on Iraqi territory."

According to a statement from Sudani's office, he also said that the government was committed to ensuring the safety of the international coalition advisers present in Iraq.

Iraq: Three rockets target US embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone

In a major discovery, twin temples which were built on top of one another were unearthed by archaeologists in Iraq. The newer temple, which was reportedly built in the Hellenistic era and dates back to the fourth century BC, was said to be linked to Alexander the Great.

Inside the temple, the archaeologists found a fired brick which had an Aramaic and Greek inscription, that referred to "the giver of two brothers", which was seen as a possible reference made to the Macedonian king, who had ruled for 13 years from 336 BC to 323 BC and conquered much of the known world.

The archaeologists, who are associated with the British Museum in London, found the older temple during excavations being carried out in Girsu, which is a Sumerian city and is also called Tello in southeastern Iraq.

The excavations were being carried out as part of the museum's ongoing venture called The Girsu Project which focuses on gathering more information about the storied history of the city.

The remnants of the older Sumerian temple were discovered buried "on the exact same spot" as the newer temple which was dedicated to the "Greek god Hercules and his Sumerian equivalent, the hero-god Ningirsu [also known as Ninurta]," said Sebastien Rey, an archaeologist and curator of Ancient Mesopotamia at the British Museum, who headed the excavation, while responding to Live Science.

The researchers said that the temple was built on the same site where one stood 1,500 years earlier and it was no coincidence. They added that the site must have some significance for the people of Mesopotamia.

"It shows that the inhabitants of Babylonia in the [fourth] century BC had a vast knowledge of their history. The legacy of the Sumerians was still very vibrant,” said Rey.

Inscription of Zeus on the coin

The archaeologists, while exploring the dual temple site, discovered a silver drachm (an ancient Greek coin) which was buried underneath an altar or shrine, along with a brick with the two brothers' inscription.

"The inscription is very interesting because it mentions an enigmatic Babylonian name written in Greek and Aramaic," said Rey. "The name 'Adadnadinakhe,' which means 'Adad, the giver of brothers,' was clearly chosen as a ceremonial title on account of its archaizing tone and symbolic connotations. All the evidence points to the fact that the name was extraordinarily rare,” he added.

The inscription found appeared to be that of Zeus, the Greek sky god, who has been a symbol of a lightning bolt and an eagle. The two symbols were found on the coin, which is likely to have been struck in Babylon "under Alexander the Great's authority," said Rey.

"It shows Hercules in a youthful, clean-shaven portrait that strongly recalls conventional representations of Alexander on one side, with Zeus on the other,” he added.

Zeus also "famously acknowledged Alexander as his son through the agency of the Ammon oracle,” he added. "He became quite literally the 'giver of brothers' because he affirmed a fraternal bond between Alexander and Heracles,” said Rey.

Pro-Iranian Iraq militia Kata’ib Hizballah (KH) on Saturday (Nov 18) denounced the sanctions imposed by the United States earlier this week over the recent attacks on American troops in Iraq and Syria. In a statement released on Telegram, Kata’ib Hizballah spokesperson Abu Ali al-Askari said attacks by "the Islamic resistance in Iraq" were part of a "strategy of attrition", dismissing sanctions as ineffectual. "The inclusion of certain brothers in the so-called 'American sanctions list' is ridiculous," Askari said, adding such would not dissuade "our courageous fighters." Days after the Israel-Hamas war started on October 7, American troops have been attacked over 50 times in Iraq and Syria, as per the Pentagon. KH behind a spate of attacks on US & partners On Friday, the US Treasury Department said in a statement that it sanctioned six individuals affiliated with Kata’ib Hizballah and the leader of another pro-Iranian group in Iraq which Washington said was also involved in attacks against US troops. "Trained, funded, and supported by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF), KH is behind a spate of recent attacks against the United States and partners in Iraq and Syria following the horrific attacks by Hamas against Israel," the statement said. The KH was previously designated by the State Department as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) in 2009 for having been responsible for numerous terrorist attacks against American and Iraqi government targets in Iraq, many on behalf of the Government of Iran and the IRGC-QF. Who are the individuals sanctioned? The six individuals who have been sanctioned are - Imad Naji al-Bahadli (member of KH's governing Shura Council), Habib Hasan Mughamis Darraji (KH's foreign affairs chief), Ja’afar al-Husayni (KH's media spokesperson), Khalid Kadhim Jasim al-Skeni (Senior KH military commander), Basim Mohammad Hasab al-Majidi (KH's commercial development chief) and Mojtaba Jahandust - an IRGC-QF official who facilitates the travel and training of KH fighters in Iran. "...all property and interests in property of the designated persons described above that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons are blocked and must be reported to OFAC. In addition, any entities that are owned, directly or indirectly, individually or in the aggregate, 50 per cent or more by one or more blocked persons are also blocked," the Treasury Department also said in its statement. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on surprise visit to Iraq, condemns attacks on American troops

Around 900 more troops from the United States have arrived in the Middle East or are heading there to bolster air defences for the American military personnel amid a surge in attacks by Iran-affiliated groups, said the Pentagon on Thursday (Oct 26).

American and allied forces in Iraq and Syria have been attacked at least 16 times this month, said US officials. The update also comes a day after the Pentagon confirmed that a total of 21 US service members reported “minor injuries” following drone and rocket attacks on military bases in Iraq and Syria.

Rise in attacks

The latest attack, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told journalists, took place in the autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq on Thursday. However, “no casualties” were reported and “some minor damage to infrastructure.”

Since October 17, “US and coalition forces have been attacked at least 12 separate times in Iraq (and) four separate times in Syria,” said Ryder, referring to the international coalition against the Islamic State.

When asked who is behind the attacks, he said, “We know that these are Iranian-backed militia groups that are supported by Iran and of course, we hold Iran responsible for these groups.”

This comes as tensions soar over the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the region. The attacks have led US troops to be constantly on alert. During a false alarm at Al-Asad air base in Iraq on Thursday, a civilian contractor died after a cardiac arrest.

“Between Oct. 17-18, 21 US personnel received minor injuries due to drone attacks at Al Assad Airbase, Iraq, and Al-Tanf Garrison, Syria,” Ryder said on Wednesday (Oct 25). He added, “All members returned to duty.”

US to send troops, warships and fighter aircraft

Following the recent attacks, the US, in addition to sending troops – whose number is now in thousands – also deployed warships and fighter aircraft to the region since the conflict erupted on October 7 which includes two aircraft carriers in a bid to deter Iran and Iran-backed groups.

Since the beginning of the war, Washington has been one of the biggest supporters of Israel with multiple high-ranking US officials, including President Joe Biden visiting the country in a show of support.

Rise in attacks The latest attack, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told journalists, took place in the autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq on Thursday. However, “no casualties” were reported and “some minor damage to infrastructure.” Since October 17, “US and coalition forces have been attacked at least 12 separate times in Iraq (and) four separate times in Syria,” said Ryder, referring to the international coalition against the Islamic State. He added, “All members returned to duty.” US to send troops, warships and fighter aircraft Following the recent attacks, the US, in addition to sending troops – whose number is now in thousands – also deployed warships and fighter aircraft to the region since the conflict erupted on October 7 which includes two aircraft carriers in a bid to deter Iran and Iran-backed groups. US forces in Iraq, Syria attacked 13 times in a week, two dozen military personnel injured

The United States on Sunday (Oct 22) urged its citizens not to travel to Iraq due to terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, civil unrest, and Mission Iraq’s limited capacity to provide support to citizens. Issuing a travel advisory, the Department of State said that on Friday, it ordered the departure of eligible family members and non-emergency government personnel from the embassy due to increased security threats against Washington's government personnel and interests.

"US citizens in Iraq face high risks to their safety and security, including the potential for violence and kidnapping. Terrorist and insurgent groups regularly attack Iraqi security forces and civilians. Anti-US militias threaten US citizens and international companies throughout Iraq," the advisory said.

"Do not travel near Iraq’s northern borders due to the continued threat of attacks by terrorist groups, armed conflict, aerial bombardment, and civil unrest. US citizens should especially avoid areas near armed groups in northern Iraq, which have been targeted with aerial strikes by neighbouring countries’ militaries," it added.

The department said that due to security concerns, US government personnel in Baghdad were instructed not to use the Baghdad International Airport.

"Due to risks to civil aviation operating in the Baghdad Flight Information Region, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has extended for an additional two years its Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) prohibiting certain flights at altitudes below 32,000 feet," it said.

In case American citizens were planning to travel to Iraq, they should establish their own personal security plan, discuss a plan with loved ones and share important documents, login information, and points of contact with them. Such citizens should also visit the department's website for Travel to High-Risk Areas.

US orders citizens not to travel to Iraq due to terrorism, armed conflict

The American troops stationed in Iraq and Syria have been attacked in recent days in the wake of regional tensions that erupted following the state of war in Israel that began October 7, the US officials said on Thursday (Oct 19).

The US has deployed its naval power in West Asia in the past two weeks, including two aircraft carriers, other warships and about 2,000 Marine personnel with the objective of bolstering Israel's maritime strength in the region.

During a false alarm at Al Asad airbase in Iraq, a civilian contractor died from a cardiac arrest, news agency AFP reported.

Earlier this week, the American troops reportedly thwarted multiple drones targeting troops in Iraq.

On Thursday, drones and rockets targeted the Ain al-Asad air base, which hosts the US and other international forces in western Iraq, and multiple blasts were heard inside the base, the AFP report added.

"While I'm not going to forecast any potential responses to these attacks, I will say that we will take all necessary actions to defend US and coalition forces against any threat," Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told reporters on Thursday (Oct 19) during a routine conference with journalists.

"Any response, should one occur, will come at a time in a manner of our choosing," Ryder said.

An American Navy warship travelling near Yemen on Thursday (Oct 19) intercepted missiles and several drones that were launched by what Ryder said was the Iran-aligned Houthi movement. But the missiles were 'potentially' heading towards Israel.

A destroyer intercepted the three "land-attack cruise missiles and several drones", said a spokesman, while speaking to the reporters. The attack was launched from Yemen and "potentially toward targets in Israel," he added.

The spokesman stated that the missiles were fired from Yemen were the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have been fighting with a government backed by a Saudi-led coalition.

According to the spokesman, no US casualties were reported and "we cannot say for certain what these missiles were targeting, but they were launched from Yemen, heading north along the Red Sea."

"Our defensive response was one we would have taken for any similar threat in the region," he said.

"We have the capability to defend our broader interests in the region and to deter regional escalation and broader expansion of the conflict that began with Hamas' attack on Israeli civilians," he added.

Israel has called up a record 360,000 reservists and is intensifying its retaliatory action against Hamas in the thickly-populated Gaza Strip following a brutal attack by the militant group on Israeli civilians on October 7, which killed about 1,400 people, mostly Israeli civilians.

At least 3,785 Palestinians have been killed and 12,493 wounded in Israeli strikes on Gaza, the health ministry in Gaza said.

Potential link between Israel-Hamas war and attacks on US troops

Pentagon said he did not see a link between the rise in attacks and the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

"At this point, again, the information that we have does not show a direct connection to the Hamas attacks on October 7," Ryder said.

The United States has 2,500 troops in Iraq, and 900 more in neighboring Syria, on a mission to assist local forces in combating Islamic State.

Across the region, the scale of Israel's retaliatory action in Israel has stoked massive anti-Israel sentiment. In Iraq, the country's top Shi'ite Muslim cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, last week called on the world to stand up to the "terrible brutality" in Gaza.

US warship intercepts missiles headed towards Israel; Washington reports attacks on its bases in Iraq, Syria

The American forces in Iraq were targeted in two separate drone attacks on Wednesday. One of the Armed drones caused minor injuries to the Troops. Even though the American Military has managed to intercept the unmanned aerial vehicle Washington at this moment is on heightened alert for activity by Iran-backed groups.

Washington on heightened alert for activity by Iran-backed groups

The US military successfully prevented an attack on its troops in Iraq early on Wednesday (Oct 18) by intercepting two one-way drones that were aimed to strike the al Asad air base, where American troops are stationed, reported Reuters citing two sources. This marks the first such attack on US forces in Iraq in over a year. While the US officials, who provided this information anonymously to Reuters, did not specify who was responsible for the attack, it has raised concerns about potential activity from Iran-backed groups.

This comes amid escalating tensions in the West Asian region due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. The drone attack was thwarted hours after a Gaza hospital blast brought further instability in the region.

In the days leading up to the attack, Iraqi armed groups aligned with Iran had threatened to target US interests with missiles and drones if the US intervened in the Israel-Hamas war.

“Our missiles, drones, and special forces are ready to direct qualitative strikes at the American enemy in its bases and disrupt its interests if it intervenes in this battle,” Ahmad “Abu Hussein” al-Hamidawi, head of the Kataib Hezbollah militia, reportedly said in a statement.

This situation has added complexity to US President Joe Biden's visit to Israel, where he intends to show support for Israel in its war against Hamas.

Citing state media, Reuters reported the fire ripped through a large events hall in Al-Hamdaniya town after fireworks were lit during the celebration. Preliminary information indicated that the building was made of highly flammable construction materials, contributing to its rapid collapse. Ambulances & medical crews dispatched to site Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out at around 10.45 pm local time (19.45 GMT) and that hundreds of people were in attendance at the time of the incident. As per official statements, ambulances and medical crews were dispatched to the site by federal Iraqi authorities and Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the main hospital in Al-Hamdaniya saw several ambulances arriving with sirens blaring and dozens of people gathering in the courtyard to donate blood. Some people were also seen gathering at the doors of a refrigerated truck carrying several black body bags. 'We saw the fire pulsating...' Speaking to Reuters, Imad Yohana, a 34-year-old who escaped the inferno, said that those at the site saw the fire pulsating, coming out of the hall. "Those who managed got out and those who didn't got stuck," Yohana added. Civil defence authorities reported the presence of prefabricated panels that were "highly flammable and contravened safety standards" inside the event hall. "The fire caused some parts of the ceiling to fall due to the use of highly flammable, low-cost construction materials," an official statement said. At least four people were killed and 15 others were injured after clashes erupted between ethnic groups in the northern Iraqi oil city of Kirkuk, reported news agency AFP citing officials, on Sunday (September 3). This comes a day after the clashes between Kurdish residents on one side and Turkmen and Arabs on the other were reported.

What do we know about the clashes?

The violence was preceded by reported week-long tensions between the two groups over a dispute that centres on a building in Kirkuk that was once the headquarters for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Iraqi army has used as a base since 2017.

The building has also historically been disputed between the federal government in Baghdad and authorities in the autonomous Kurdistan region of the north.

Recently, the central government planned to return the building to the KDP in a show of goodwill but Arab and Turkmen opponents set up a camp outside the gate last week in protest.

According to the police, the violence sparked when a group of Kurdish protesters approached the camp on Saturday. This was after the local media reported that Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani had ordered the site to be handed over to the KDP.

Sudani has since called for a commission of inquiry into the incident. The Kirkuk police, as per Reuters said that people were injured after stones were thrown and metal bars used to attack.

On Sunday morning, General Jabbar Naeema al-Taee, Kirkuk’s top security official, told AFP that the building at the centre of the dispute was “under the control of the army” of Iraq and that the sit-in was over.

Death toll rises

At least four Kurds were killed and 15 others were injured due to the clashes, said Amer Shuani, the local police spokesman, on Sunday. Health officials said at least three out of the four victims were shot dead. Police and hospital sources had said earlier that one Kurdish protester was killed.

Police and security officials in the city said they are investigating the circumstances of the deaths, including who opened fire.

Curfew lifted

After the clashes, the Iraqi PM ordered a city-wide curfew to prevent an escalation of the violence and called on “political parties, social organizations, and community leaders to play their part in preventing strife and preserving security, stability, and order”.

On Sunday, General Kawa Gharib, the police chief in Kirkuk, told AFP that the curfew has since been lifted and that the “situation is now stable throughout the city.”

Iraq: At least four killed, over a dozen injured after clashes between ethnic groups in Kirkuk

At least one civilian was killed and eight other people were injured Saturday during rival protests in the multi-ethnic Iraqi city of Kirkuk, a local official said, amid days of brewing tensions.

The identity and the circumstances surrounding the death were not immediately clear, the director of the local health authority Ziad Khalaf told AFP, adding that those injured had been hit by bullets, stones or glass.

He said a member of the security forces was among the injured.

Kirkuk police spokesperson Amer Shuani told regional broadcaster Kurdistan 24 that the toll was "one dead and five injured".

A curfew was instated in the evening after rival protests -- between Kurdish residents on one side and Turkmen and Arabs on the other -- descended into violence.

Earlier in the day, police had been deployed to act as a buffer and keep apart the rival groups.

Warning shots were fired to force Kurdish demonstrators to disperse. An AFP correspondent said vehicles on a main avenue were set on fire.

Tensions have been brewing for nearly a week in Kirkuk, which has historically been disputed between the federal government in Baghdad and the authorities in the autonomous Kurdistan region in the north.

Arab and Turkmen demonstrators staged a sit-in near the headquarters of the Iraqi security forces in Kirkuk province on Monday, after reports that Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani had ordered them to hand over the site to the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), which used to occupy it.

Kurdish protesters tried to reach the headquarters on Saturday, an AFP correspondent said.

After the violence, Sudani ordered a curfew in Kirkuk and "extensive security operations in the areas affected by the riots", a statement from his office said.

He called on all parties to "play their part in preventing strife and preserving security, stability, and order in Kirkuk Governorate".

Sudani, who is also commander-in-chief of the armed forces, ordered security forces in the province "to fulfil their responsibilities in maintaining security and upholding the rule of law".

In 2014, the KDP and the peshmerga, the security forces of the Kurdistan region, took control of Kirkuk, an oil-producing region of northern Iraq.

However, federal troops expelled them in autumn 2017 following an abortive referendum on Kurdish independence.

Despite a history of rocky relations and tensions, Sudani's government has generally managed to maintain cordial relations between Baghdad and Arbil, the Kurdish capital.
