However, the Indian cricket board remains open to the idea of shifting the tournament overseas in case the COVID-19 situation in the country worsens.

While UAE is reportedly not being considered as an option due to the extensive dew factor during the month of April, South Africa is one of the strongest contenders to host the tournament if it is moved out of India. As per a report in Cricbuzz, Cricket South Africa (CSA) is currently in talks with the BCCI and has presented a proposal stating that it will be a cheaper option to stage a tournament in the country.

As per the report, Cricket South Africa has presented a lucrative offer to the BCCI in a bid to stage the tournament in the country. CSA has told BCCI that hotels in South Africa will be significantly cheaper than UAE for the ten teams while also insisting that there would be less air travel which will further cut down the expenses of the franchises.

Cricket South Africa has planned to stage the entire tournament in four stadiums which are centred around capital city Johannesburg, where all ten teams can have their bio-bubbles. The matches can be played at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Centurion Park in Pretoria, Willowmoore Park in Benoni and Senwes Cricket Stadium in Potchefstroom which are all within driving distance to each other.

Apart from the four stadiums around Johannesburg, the CSA is also ready to offer to host some matches at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town and the Boland Park in Paarl where India recently played the three-match Test series and three ODIs against the Proteas.

What I have heard is that he is really keen to get into the mix and get involved," said Kirsten on Star Sports` show `IPL Selection Day.

"I think he understands the importance of this tournament. What I have heard is that he is raring to go and get into the mix from a leadership perspective. So, I think that`s really exciting for us to have a player with such a level of skill, motivated to do well in this competition," he added.

When asked about picking Rashid and Gill, Kirsten said: "I am really excited by both of them. They are both high performers - Rashid Khan has gone around the world, proven his value anywhere, so that`s an incredible signing for us. I am very excited to work with him - I haven`t yet - but I have seen him a lot, have met him a few times, but have never really worked with him. So, I am looking forward to that. Certainly, watching him on the field, he`s a very competitive, young man that wants to do well for the franchise that he`s been involved in."

The prospect of hosting the entire tournament in Maharashtra was discussed during a meeting between the BCCI and the owners of the IPL teams on Saturday (January 22). The matches will be played behind closed doors if the tournament is staged in India.

Besides the four stadiums in the two cities, it is believed that Maharashtra has enough hotels as well to accommodate all ten teams during the IPL 2022 season. However, as per Cricbuzz, the final decision on the venue is yet to be made and it is likely to be finalised on February 20 after the board has assessed the COVID-19 situation in the state.

A total of 270 capped, 903 uncapped and 41 players from associate nations have registered their names for the IPL mega auction. The top bracket for the auction is Rs 2 crore (INR 20 million). A number of top Indian and overseas players have opted to register in the highest bracket for the auction.

The 2 crore&nbsp;(INR 20 million) bracket consists of 17 Indians and a total of 32 overseas players. The likes of senior Indian spinner R Ashwin, senior India batter Shikhar Dhawan, veteran batter Suresh Raina and young wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan are among the big Indian names in the top bracket for the mega auction.

On the further breakdown of the list, 61 are capped Indian players while 209 are capped&nbsp;international cricketers. 143 players are uncapped Indians who were a part of previous IPL seasons, while six players are uncapped internationals who were a part of previous IPL seasons. 
 
In terms of uncapped players, 692 players from India and 62 international players have registered themselves. 
 
From the 318 overseas players on the long list, spread across 18 countries, Australia leads with 59 players followed by 48 from South Africa, 41 from West Indies, 36 from Sri Lanka, 30 from England, 29 from New Zealand, 20 from Afghanistan, 15 from Nepal and 14 from USA.

Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun has been appointed to take up the same role for two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders, said the franchise on Friday ahead of the 2022 season. Arun, who played two Tests and four ODIs for India, takes over the role from former New Zealand pacer Kyle Mills with immediate effect. 
 
"I`m very excited and looking forward to becoming part of a highly successful franchise, such as the Knight Riders. I have admired the Knight Riders franchise for not only being very successful in the IPL &amp; around the world in T20 leagues but also for the way it is very professionally run," said Arun on his new coaching role. 
 
Arun was the bowling coach of the India men`s cricket team since 2014 and played a key role in developing the pace attack to world-class levels till his tenure came to an end in November 2021 alongside head coach Ravi Shastri and fielding coach R Sridhar.

The IPL Governing Council on Tuesday decided to issue the Letter of Intent to new IPL franchises Lucknow and Ahmedabad, formalising their entry into the world's biggest T20 league. RPSG Group and private investment firm CVC had successfully bid for the Lucknow and Ahmedabad franchise, respectively, last October. However, the LOI got delayed after it emerged that CVC had links with betting companies outside India.

Vivo won the title rights of the IPL in 2018 for a whopping sum of Rs 440 crore (INR 4.4 billion) till the 2020 season. However, Vivo had to pull out for a year in 2020 due to the tensions after India-China diplomatic standoff. Dream11 was roped in as a sponsor for a year while Vivo's deal was extended till 2023 due to the 1-year pause.

However, the Tata Group will now be the main sponsor for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The Indian Premier League which kicked off in 2008 has gone on to become one of the most lucrative sporting events in the world and is the richest T20 league by a fair margin.

While the entire season was played in the UAE in 2020, IPL 2021 was divided into two phases with the second phase taking place overseas after a COVID-19 outbreak led to the postponement of the first phase of the tournament which was held in India.

As per a report in India Today, a source in the know-how of things has revealed that the BCCI is exploring all options, including hosting IPL 2022 overseas. The source further added that the Indian cricket board's current priority is to host the upcoming IPL mega player auction ahead of the start of the new season.

"We are exploring all options which include overseas IPL as well. But our focus is to host IPL in India for sure. As of now our priority is auction, we will soon take a call," the source was quoted as saying by India Today.

India has been recording a huge spike in COVID-19 cases on a daily basis with the numbers going up each passing day. The source revealed that the BCCI is monitoring the situation closely and a decision on te venue of IPL 2022 will be taken later. The BCCI has already postponed a number of upcoming domestic tournaments in the country, including the Ranji Trophy.
