Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer Umran Malik earned his dream maiden call up to the Indian team on Sunday (May 22) as the selectors announced India's squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home. Malik enjoyed an impressive campaign for SRH in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and has also been deemed one of the finds of the tournament.

The 21-year-old fast bowler has been consistently clocking over 150 kmph with the ball and has impressed with his raw pace. He was on the selectors' radar ahead of the squad announcement and has been rewarded for his bowling exploits in IPL 2022. Umran is among a host of players who have made the cut in India's squad on the back of their brilliant show in IPL this season.

While he has been fast-tracked into the Indian team for the South Africa ODI series, it remains to be seen if Umran will make the cut in India's playing XI for the first T20I against the Proteas directly. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri recently shared his views on the chances of Umran's inclusion straightway in India's playing XI.

Shastri believes going by his current form Umran deserves to be included in the playing XI for the series opener between India and South Africa which will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on June 09.

"On current form, they might just play (him). If he is bowling well in the nets, doing the right things, they will unleash him at the earliest against South Africa. His (Umran) association with the team is the absolute right thing because at least he can be groomed properly," Shastri said on ESPNCricinfo.

Umran made his IPL debut for SRH last season but did enough to impress the team management as he was retained ahead of the mega auction this year. He featured in all 14 matches for the franchise this season and finished the season as the highest wicket-taker for the Kane Williamson-led side with 22 wickets in 14 matches.

However, Umran's bowling heroics failed to inspire SRH to the playoffs as Williamson & Co. could only manage 12 points in 14 matches in IPL 2022.

Can Umran Malik make his India debut against South Africa? Former head coach Ravi Shastri gives his take

Team India's squad for the five T20Is versus South Africa was announced on Sunday (May 22). While the regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested and Ravindra Jadeja-Suryakumar Yadav are injured, BCCI's selection committee announced a strong 18-member squad which will be led by all-format vice-captain KL Rahul.

In the Rahul-led India squad, many young guns and uncapped players have been included for the series versus Temba Bavuma-led Proteas. Among them, Dinesh Karthik's comeback has been highly-talked about. At 36, not many would've given him a chance to return to the national team, who last played in 2019. However, Karthik's magnificent run in IPL 2022 has changed the script in his favour.

In 14 games, Karthik has so far amassed 287 runs at an average of 57.40 and a strike rate of 191 playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Thus, he is expected to come good even in the playoffs for RCB and then feature in India's playing XI for the SA series. Nonetheless, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra snubbed DK and Kuldeep Yadav from his probable line-up for the upcoming home series.

On his Youtube channel, Chopra said, "What is the composition of the XI you are going to see? I feel you might see Ishan Kishan opening alongside KL Rahul. But there are a lot of keepers, so he might not open, you can open with Ruturaj Gaikwad and not Ishan Kishan, that's a choice." Chopra then named vice-captain Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya as automatic starters in the middle-order and called for Shreyas Iyer as well as Deepak Hooda's inclusion.

He added, "After that, you will keep Axar Patel in the team because you want a little depth in the batting. So Axar as a left-arm spinner and a batter. If you play Axar, you will only be able to play Yuzi Chahal." His pace department comprises Bhuvneshwar Kumar, one among Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel and either of Umran Malik or Avesh Khan.

India vs SA T20Is: Former Indian opener snubs Dinesh Karthik in his probable XI for KL Rahul & Co.

Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) ended their run in IPL 2022 with a five-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who finished in the eighth position. As Punjab have managed to reach the playoffs only on two occasions since the inaugural season, they will be hugely disappointed as Mayank & Co. looked a strong unit on paper but never gained consistency throughout the season.

Despite their failure to enter the playoffs, Punjab still have quite a few positives in the form of performances from Arshdeep Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Liam Livingstone, etc. Due to his economical returns despite bowling the tough overs, Arshdeep reaped rewards and was named in India's 18-man squad for the upcoming T20Is versus South Africa, to kick off on June 09.

Following Arshdeep's inclusion, former Punjab and Team India opener Virender Sehwag lauded the pacer and compared him to former Indian speedsters Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra. "Arshdeep has impressed me because he bowls two of the last three overs for Punjab Kings. He may not have that many wickets, but his economy rate is brilliant. He is the bowler who bowls one over with the new ball and two in the slog overs. I have only seen Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra do that during my time. Now, its Arshdeep and Bumrah, and Bhuvneshwar as well. It is a very difficult job to bowl in the slog overs,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Talking about Arshdeep's numbers in IPL 15, he ended with 10 scalps from 14 games at a splendid economy rate of 7.70. Despite his consistency, Punjab failed to live upto expectations and have bowed out of the 15th season. Arshdeep, meanwhile, will now shift his focus to delivering for Team India in the SA T20Is at home.

'I've only seen Zaheer, Nehra do that during my time' - Virender Sehwag lavishes praise on Punjab pacer

On Sunday (May 22), the BCCI selection committee announced an 18-member Team India squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series versus South Africa, starting from June 09. While the big guns such as regular captain Rohit Sharma, former skipper Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested, KL Rahul will lead the line-up, which also sees the comeback of Dinesh Karthik.

Karthik, who had donned the commentator's hat last year, has seen his career getting revived in IPL 2022, where he is representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Karthik got a new lease of life at the RCB, where he has made heads turn being a fantastic finisher for the three-time runners-up and rescuing them from several precarious situations. In 14 games, Karthik has amassed 287 runs at an average of 57.40 and a strike rate of 191.

Thus, Karthik's IPL 15 knocks have helped him make a comeback in Team India setup. In a video shared by RCB, the veteran keeper-batter thanked Bengaluru's top brass Sanjay Bangar, Mike Hesson and Indian captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid for instilling faith on him.

"Very happy. Very very very satisfying. I must say this has been my most memorable comeback because a lot of people had given up on me and for me to do what I did, practice with the way I did with my coach Nayar. So many special things in the lead to the auction and how I practiced post that. I lot of credit also to Sanjay Bangar and Mike Hesson. The clarity that they gave me to execute the role that I wanted to, in many ways I am indebted to RCB for picking me and believing in me," said Karthik who was roped in by the francse for 5.50 crore at IPL mega auction.

"A lot of credit must go to the selectors, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid because these days with so many young boys putting their names for selection, to see the skillset that is there and then to believe that this is the guy we need for the World Cup, it is a very very humbling feeling. I know the journey is still there to the World Cup but to be a part of the scheme of things and giving me an opportunity to showcase my skills and I am very proud of it," Karthik added.

'A lot of people had given up on me' - Dinesh Karthik reacts after his memorable Team India comeback

Emerging stars like Umran Malik and Mohsin Khan could be rewarded for their IPL performances while old-horses Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik are likely to return to the T20 set-up when the India squad is picked for the home series against South Africa on Sunday.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who has not played for India since the T20 World Cup last year, has shown form and fitness in the IPL and is set to be included in the squad for the five-game series beginning June 9. He is finally back to bowling regularly, which was critical in his national comeback bid.

After a two-month-long IPL and with the Test team due to depart for England on June 15, some of the all-format players including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah could be rested for the home series.
A similar squad is also expected to be picked for the two T20s in Ireland later in June.

If that is the case, the captaincy responsibility could go to either Dhawan, who led in Sri Lanka last year, or Hardik who has impressed as a leader in his debut season for Gujarat Titans. The IPL continues to unearth future stars and this season has been no different.

While Umran impressed with his raw pace for the Sunrisers, left-arm pacer Mohsin, has stood out both for his speed and accuracy. As his Lucknow Super Giants skipper K L Rahul said left-arm pacers are always in demand at the highest level, Mohsin could get his big break on Sunday.

Another left-arm pacer in the reckoning is Arshdeep Singh, who once again had a good season for Punjab. He had one of the best economy rates in the death overs and displayed the ability of landing yorkers at will, which is always welcome in an unforgiving format like the T20.

In the batting department, Tilak Verma showed a lot of promise in his maiden IPL season and might get a look in for the South Africa series, considering his Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma, who is also the India captain, had reserved high praise for the left-hander.

The likes of Deepak Hooda and Venkatesh Iyer were tried in the middle-order over the West Indies and Sri Lanka series and it remains to be seen, if either of them retains his place or if selectors give preference to IPL form.

Dinesh Karthik, who has made a strong case for the finisher's role with his exploits for RCB, is also expected to make his umpteenth comeback in the Indian team.

Rahul Tewatia, who has finished games for Gujarat from improbable situations this season, can also be given an opportunity in that position. The form of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav has also attracted a lot of attention, potentially making way for the return of 'Kulcha'.

It is still early days in a T20 World Cup year but the South Africa series should give the team management enough idea to decide its core group of players for the ICC event Down Under in October-November.

Umran Malik, Mohsin Khan and Dinesh Karthik likely to be picked in India's squad for South Africa T20 series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Team India's squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa on Sunday (May 22). A number of senior players have been rested from the series which will be played following the conclusion of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

Captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah have all been rested from the T20I series and will be travelling to England for the one-off Test against the hosts. In Rohit's absence, KL Rahul has been appointed as the captain of the Indian team for the T20I series against the Proteas.

While the senior players have been rested, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is all set to make his comeback post a big layoff following India's disappointing show at the T20 World Cup 2021 last year. Hardik has been excellent as captain for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022 and has also started bowling regularly which made his return to the team inevitable.

Apart from Hardik, veteran wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik will also be making his comeback for the Indian team for the first time since 2019. Karthik has been in the form of his life for RCB this season and has played numerous finishing cameos for his team to earn a recall to India's T20I squad.

Maiden call up for Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh

Umran Malik has been one of the finds of IPL 2022. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) speedster has impressed many with his raw pace and ability to trouble the best of the batters. Umran has been consistently clocking over 150 kmph this season and also holds the record for bowling the fastest delivery in IPL 2022.

He was touted by many to make the cut in India's squad for the South Africa T20Is and has deservingly made the cut along with Punjab Kings (PBKS) pacer Arshdeep Singh, who has also been impressive throughout the season. The left-arm fast bowler has been excellent in death and has been garnering praise with his performances in the IPL for quite some time now.

While Umran has 21 wickets in 13 matches for SRH this season, Arshdeep has managed 10 wickets in 13 games for Punjab Kings so far this season. There were reports that Lucknow Super Giants pacer Mohsin Khan can also be in the fray for selection after his impressive show but he has not been picked by the Chetan Sharma-led selection panel.

Along with skipper Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan are the other two openers in the side. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma rested as India announce squad for T20I series against South Africa

Team India will return to action very soon after the conclusion of the IPL 2022 edition. The Rohit Sharma-led national team is set to lock horns with South Africa in a five-match T20I series at home, starting from June 09. With India also set to resume Test rivalry with England in the fifth and final match of the 2021 series, the marquee players are reportedly set to miss the SA T20Is.

Thus, Indian selectors are most likely going to announce a second-stringed side for the South Africa series, followed by a white-ball assignment versus hosts Ireland. Amid all this, the South African team recently announced a strong squad for the India T20Is, comprising regulars such as Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Lungi Ngidi, skipper Temba Bavuma, Anrich Nortje, etc. Despite many of them currently being a part of the IPL 2022 edition, the Proteas line-up boosts a strong squad. Thus, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has urged the national selectors to not rest India's regulars for the upcoming bilateral T20Is.

"If you were thinking that an experimental squad can be put out for this series and take June lightly before the tour of England, just think again. South Africa have tied India's hands now and will win the series if an ordinary team is put out. India have to play pretty much everyone," Chopra said on his Youtube channel.

"So, a request to the selectors, if the South African players don't need rest, then don't rest your main players either. If you take this lightly, then you will lose the series at home," Chopra added.

India have a hectic schedule once again en route the 2022 T20 World Cup. They host South Africa at home, before playing Ireland in two T20Is in their own den, an all-format tour of England which will be followed by a white-ball tour of West Indies and a home T20I series versus Australia in September.

'Don't rest your main players' - Former Indian opener makes special request to national selectors for SA T20Is

Team India's cricketing calendar will resume as soon as the IPL 2022 edition concludes, on May 29. The senior men's team's hectic schedule will once again see two teams in action at the same time, as was the case last year. A white-ball squad will face South Africa at home and Ireland in their own backyard, whereas the red-ball team will be on the England tour in June-July.

Thus, the Indian team will have two captains leading the national side simultaneously along with two coaching staff at work. In head coach Rahul Dravid's absence, who will be with the Test line-up, National Cricket Academy's (NCA) current head VVS Laxman is likely to step in his former teammate's role and act as the head coach for the white-ball assignments versus SA and Ireland. Earlier this year, the former Test specialist had assisted the victorious Yash Dhull-led India U-19 team in the Junior World Cup in West Indies.

“We now have a warm-up game against Leicestershire on June 24 before the Birmingham Test. Rahul Dravid and team will leave on June 15th or 16th. We will be asking VVS (Laxman) to step in for India South Africa T20’s and Ireland T20’s," a top BCCI official was quoted as saying by InsideSport.in.

In mid-2021, a similar such arrangement was made within the Indian team. In June-July, the then head coach Ravi Shastri was with the Virat Kohli-led Indian team in the United Kingdom for the WTC final and England Tests. On the other hand, the previous NCA chief Dravid took over the coaching role for the Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian side touring Sri Lanka, during the same time in late July.

NCA chief VVS Laxman likely to don head coach's hat for SA, Ireland series in Rahul Dravid's absence: Report

The Chetan Sharma-led selection panel is reportedly set to pick two separate squads for Team India as they gear up to face South Africa in a five-match T20I series at home followed by a full-fledged tour of England post the conclusion of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. India will play a one-off Test, 3 T20Is and as many ODIs against England.

Last year, India had selected two separate squads when the Test team toured England while Shikhar Dhawan led the T20I team in a series in Sri Lanka. As per a report in Cricbuzz, a similar situation is expected to arise this time around. The senior players are likely to be rested from the T20I series against South Africa and will leave for England for the one-off Test.

As per the report, the likes of captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah are likely to be rested from the T20I series against South Africa which gets underway from June 09 and will conclude on June 19. The senior players will leave for England on June 16.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who was dropped from the Indian Test side earlier this year, is expected to make his comeback to the squad after his brilliant performances for Sussex in county cricket in England. Meanwhile, the T20I squad against Sri Lanka will see a mix of youth and experience.

While the likes of Hardik Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are expected to feature, youngsters like Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Ruturaj Gaikwad and others might get a chance as well. The selectors are likely to announce both squads by the end of this week. As per the report, Dhawan might lead the Indian team against South Africa in the T20I series.

Ajinkya Rahane to miss England tour

Veteran batter Ajnkya Rahane was part of the Indian squad which had taken a 2-1 lead in the Test series against England last year before the final game was called off due to COVID-19. However, Rahane is unlikely to make the cut in the squad this time around for the 5th Test.

As per Cricbuzz, Rahane has suffered a Grade III hamstring injury and is set to miss the England tour. He was dropped from the Test squad along with Pujara and Wriddhiman Saha earlier this year but was expected to return. However, the injury has come as a huge setback for the right-hander.

Rahane suffered the injury while playing for his IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders in their last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 14. He got injured while batting and didn't come out to filed during the game. While Rahane's absence isn't a huge concern, picking two squads can be a challenging task for the selectors.

Selectors likely to pick two squads for England tour, South Africa series; Ajinkya Rahane likely to miss out

South Africa have recalled fast bowler Anrich Nortje and all-rounder Wayne Parnell, and handed a first Twenty20 International call-up to batsman Tristan Stubbs, for the five-match tour of India starting on June 9.
Nortje, 28, returns to the squad after a hip injury forced him out of the home series against India and Bangladesh earlier this year. He has proven his fitness for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Parnell, 32, returns to the T20 set-up after five years away having also recently featured in the One-Day International side following a long absence. Stubbs, 21, is rewarded for fine domestic form this season which also saw him get a surprise call up to the Mumbai Indians camp for the IPL.

"Tristan Stubbs is an exciting prospect and we’re keen to see what he’s made of," convener of selectors Victor Mpitsang said in a statement from Cricket South Africa on Tuesday. "The country can also join us in a collective sigh of relief at the return of Anrich Nortje, who has been working hard to recover from a frustrating injury."

Anrich Nortje, Wayne Parnell return for South Africa’s T20I series vs India

Virat Kohli is likely to be rested from India's upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home following the conclusion of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Kohli has been enduring a rough patch for his side Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL this season and has been struggling to score runs consistently.

He has had a disappointing tournament so far with the bat having managed only one half-century in 12 matches for RCB. Kohli has bagged three golden ducks already this season and has only 216 runs to his name at a poor average of 19.64 and a strike rate of just over 111.

As per PTI, Kohli is set to be rested as he has been playing cricket for a long time now, the BCCI will also adopt a periodic resting policy for the senior players in the team. The senior players will be given adequate breaks to ensure they can manage their workload better in times of playing cricket in bio-bubbles due to COVID-19.

“Virat Kohli in all probability will be rested for the South Africa series. He has been playing a lot of cricket and has been in the bubble for a long time. It has been a policy decision regarding Kohli and other senior players that they will be given periodic breaks from time to time," a BCCI official was quoted as saying by PTI.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) fast bowler Umran Malik has been taking the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 by storm with his impressive performances. Malik has been clocking good pace consistently and has been one of the best bowlers for SRH this season. The 22-year-old is gifted with natural pace and he has left many in awe with his ability to clock over 150 kmph regularly.

Malik has been dubbed as the next big thing in Indian cricket by many as he continues to make waves with his lethal pace. The youngster recently breathed fire with the ball in SRH's last game against Gujarat Titans where he cleaned up Wriddhiman Saha with a stunning 153 kmph yorker and went on to bag his maiden five-wicket haul.

SRH lost the game by five wickets as they failed to defend a strong total of 195 runs despite Malik's heroics with the ball. However, the tear-away quick stole the show with his brilliant fifer as he grabbed headlines for his sensational effort. Out of the five dismissals, Malik cleaned bowled four GT batters in his memorable fifer.

The young fast bowler is reportedly already on the radar of the Indian selectors, who are likely to give him a chance in the upcoming T20I series between India and South Africa at home.

Umran Malik on selectors' radar for South Africa T20I series afer impressive IPL 2022 campaign - Report

Team India have a hectic schedule in the calendar year. Soon after the completion of IPL 2022, the Indian senior men's team will soon gear up for a home series versus South Africa. Temba Bavuma-led Proteas will arrive in India for five T20Is, from June 09-June 19, as the bilateral series will be a preparation for both sides for the 2022 T20 World Cup.

As per reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keen on doing away with bio-bubbles and also getting rid of hard quarantine for the South Africa home series. As per the board's senior official, bio-bubbles are taking a hard toll on cricketers and, hence, it is likely that the players will benefit with more freedom given to them this time around.

For the unversed, the bilateral series for India, prior to the ongoing IPL season, have all been played under bio-bubbles. In fact, even IPL 2022 is being conducted within the bio-bubble environment. Thus, this will be a welcome change for players if a change is implemented by the BCCI.

Some players have got periodic breaks but if you look at the bigger picture, living in bio-bubble one series after another and now two months of IPL is simply exhausting for the players," he added.

India vs SA: BCCI to do away with bio-bubbles and hard quarantine, senior players to be rested - Report

On Sunday (March 27), the Mithali Raj-led Indian team bowed out of the ICC Women's World Cup in New Zealand. Playing South Africa in a must-win game, i.e. their last league stage encounter, for a place in the semi-finals, the Indian eves gave their all but ended on the losing side on the last ball by the barest of margins.

Opting to bat first at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, India rode on a perfect 91-run opening stand between half-centurions Shefali Verma and Smriti Mandhana. After losing two quick wickets, India posted 274 for 7 courtesy Mithali's 68 and vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur's 48. In reply, South Africa chased it down with three wickets to spare courtesy Laura Wolvaardt's 80, Lara Goodall's 49 and an unbeaten 52 from Mignon du Preez along with cameos from Marizanne Kapp and Chloe Tryon.

It was a riveting contest that went down to the wire as Deepti Sharma's last-over no-ball titled the equation in Proteas' favour. Nonetheless, India could have also scored a lot more than they did (less than 40 runs) in the last five overs whereas their fielding wasn't upto the mark during the crunch moments of the game.

At the post-match presenstation, skipper Mithali pointed out, "I personally feel the girls gave it all, it was an important game, was a good game, it ended our campaign, but I'm proud of the girls for coming so far. With the bowlers we had, I thought 275 was a good total, we had defended similar totals in the past. Her experience (on missing Jhulan Goswami) would have added a lot, but this was an exposure for the other girls to step up. Everything should come to an end, it'll take time to settle the emotions, but that is sport. We are proud of you: Virat Kohli reacts after Mithali Raj-led India bow out of Women's World Cup

Mignon du Preez scored the winning runs for South Africa on the final ball of the 50th over as the Proteas beat India in a last-ball thriller to qualify for the semi-finals of the ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2022 at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Sunday (March 27). Mithali Raj & Co. produced a splendid fight and took the game down to the wire but ended up falling short at the end to bow out of the tournament.

Du Preez turned out to be the hero for the South Africa women's team as she played an unbeaten knock of 52 runs off 63 balls under pressure and took her team over the line. She was awarded the Player of the Match award as South Africa's win confirmed West Indies' spot in the top four and sent India crashing from the tournament.

India had set up a target of 275 runs for South Africa in the must-win game with a spot in the semi-final on the line. However, the total never proved enough for the Women in Blue as they struggled to contain the South African batting line-up.

South Africa lost opener Lizelle Lee cheaply on 6 off 15 balls at the start of their run-chase after a terrible run-out but Laura Wolvaardt combined with Lara Goodall to steady the ship for the Proteas women. While Wolvaardt played a sensational knock of 80 off 79 balls, Goodall scored 49 off 69 balls.

The duo added a brilliant stand of 125 runs for the first wicket after a poor start to set up a comfortable run-chase for South Africa. However, South Africa lost both the batters in quick succession to find themselves in a bit of trouble but were rescued by Du Preez (52) and Marizanne Kapp (32), who added 47 runs for the 5th wicket to take their closer to the finish line.

Harmanpreet Kaur brought India back into the game by running out Kapp in the 45th over before Close Tryon (17) was dismissed by Rajeshwari Gayakwad in the 47th over. It went down the wire with South Africa needing 7 runs to win off the last over. No.8 Trisha Chetty was run out on the second ball of the final over while trying to steal a double before Deepti Sharma got Du Preez caught on the penultimate ball of the 50th over.

However, it was deemed a no-ball which brought the equation down to 2 needed off the last two balls for South Africa. Du Preez and Shabnum Ismail held their nerves to steal singles of the last two deliveries to take their team home and dump India out of the tournament.

Earlier, batting first, India rode on half-centuries from openers Smriti Mandhana (71) and Shafali Verma (53) along with crucial knocks of 68 and 48 runs from skipper Mithali and Harmanpreet respectively to post a fighting total of 275 runs on the board. However, the total didn't prove enough as South Africa managed to get over the line in the run-chase.

South Africa beat India in last-ball thriller as Mithali Raj & Co. crash out of Women's World Cup 2022

Their destiny in their own hands, India will go all out to brush off an inconsistent run and seal a semifinal berth in the Women's World Cup when they play South Africa in a do-or-die match here on Sunday.

So far in the tournament, the 2017 runners-up haven't fired in the manner they would have like to.

With three wins and as many losses India, who are in the fifth spot with six points in the overall standings, find themselves in a must-win situation heading into their final league match.

Their semifinal chances were dented when West Indies, who are also vying to advance to the knockout stage, and South Africa's match was washed out with the former moving up to seven points earlier this week.

A win on Sunday will see India advance to the last four, and a point from the game will also work for the Mithali Raj-led side, as they have a superior NRR (+0.768) than West Indies (-0.890).

In case India lose to South Africa, their only hope of advancing to the semifinals will be if England, who have a better NRR (+0.778), also lose their last league stage match to Bangladesh and finish on a lower NRR. That seems unlikely, though.

But the 'Women in Blue' would want to hold all the cards and also get a two-match winning momentum going into the semifinals.

India's inconsistent batting came to the fore yet again in an otherwise 110-run win against Bangladesh, and skipper Raj would be keen to improve on that aspect against a challenging South African bowling attack.

"Tomorrow is a crucial game and everyone knows that. They are all ready to give their 100 percent. Whoever goes out to bat goes out thinking we have to get partnerships and back each other," Shafali Verma said at the pre-match press conference.

"We want good partnerships in tomorrow's match as a batting unit. The bowling and fielding has become quite good. We have improved as a team," she added.

Raj herself has been struggling with the willow. She has four single-digit scores in the tournament.

Potentially playing her last game for India should they not make the semis, the 39-year-old veteran would be eager to get some runs under her belt, and ensure that her team makes the cut.

Smriti Mandhana, barring the century against West Indies, has also looked scratchy. Shafali got some much-needed runs against Bangladesh while Yastika Bhatia has slotted herself perfectly at No. 3.

Vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been India's most consistent performer with the bat while all-rounders Pooja Vastrakar and Sneh Rana have shown they can be counted on to score quick runs down the order.

The batters will need to fire as a group to get the better of South Africa who have only lost one match in the tournament.

The bowling department, which has looked lacklustre at times, put up a much-improved show against Bangladesh. The move to bring in spinner Poonam

Yadav in place of pacer Meghna Singh paid off for India.

However, it remains to be seen if India persist with two pacers, three spinners strategy at the Hagley Oval, which has a balanced track where the bowlers will have to be disciplined with their line and lengths.

South Africa, on the other hand, have already qualified for the semifinals. They sit second in the overall standings, behind Australia.

However, batting remains a concern for the Proteas. Laura Wolvaardt has been South Africa's stand-out batter. Skipper Sune Luus has three half-centuries while Marizanne Kapp has played a few cameos.

The teams (from):

India: Mithali Raj (c), Harmanpreet Kaur (vc), Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Yastika Bhatia, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (wk), Sneh Rana, Jhulan Goswami, Pooja Vastrakar, Meghna Singh, Renuka Singh Thakur, Taniya Bhatia (wk), Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav.

Women's World Cup: Semifinal berth at stake as India face South Africa in do-or-die clash

The race for the semi-finals have intensified with each passing day in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup in New Zealand. While Meg Lenning-led Australia were the first team to book a slot in the semis, they have been joined by South Africa as the Proteas Women made it to the top four following their washout encounter versus West Indies on Thursday (March 24).

Talking about the West Indies-South Africa clash, only 10.5 overs of play was possible before rain played spoilsport to allow the South Africans to go through. West Indies also moved up to occupy the third spot in the points table and remain alive in the semi-finals race, however, they will need either India or England to lose a game to qualify. Before talking about Mithali Raj-led India's chances for the semi-finals, here's a look at the points table:

With Australia and South Africa already through to the semis, the remaining two spots have three contenders in the form of West Indies, England and India. Pakistan is out of the tournament whereas Bangladesh have an almost impossible task even if they win both games (against Australia and England, respectively) as their NRR is very poor. Hosts New Zealand need a humongous win and, hence, are almost out.

Defending champions England need to win their remaining game to get to 8 points and hope India lose to South Africa. Finally coming to the two-time runners-up Women in Blue, the result in the West Indies-South Africa game is a huge blow to India's chances. They not only need a win in their last league stage encounter -- versus South Africa -- but even with a victory, India might lose out on a semi-final slot as England have a better NRR after a thumping win versus Pakistan. A defeat against the Proteas and England's win will knockout Mithali & Co.

EXPLAINED! How things have complicated for India in CWC 2022 semi-finals race after SA-WI washout

Mithali Raj-led India have had a topsy-turvy ride so far in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup. The two-time runners-up thrashed Pakistan in their tournament-opener before falling flat against hosts New Zealand. India bounced back in style versus the daunting West Indies line-up before losing to England in their fourth outing in the showpiece event in New Zealand.

On Wednesday (March 16), India faced defending champions England at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. Opting to bowl first, England rode on Charlotte Dean's 4 for 23 as the big guns such as Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, Mithali, Deepti Sharma and the likes fell flat as India were dismissed for 134 in 36.2 overs. In reply, England finished the run-chase with four wickets in hand in 31.2 overs. Natalie Sciver's 45 and skipper Heather Knight's 53 led the charge of England as they finally opened their account after three successive defeats.

After the defeat, India find themselves in a tight spot to enter the semi-finals of the CWC 2022 edition. With three big games left, Mithali & Co. will need to revamp at the earliest to finish at the top four. Here's how they can make it to the semi-finals despite the England drubbing:

For the unversed, a total of 4 wins are deemed enough to qualify for the knockouts. Thus, India need two more wins -- from three games -- to enter the semis. With India to play Australia, Bangladesh and South Africa, respectively, they are still very much in chance to enter the next round even if they lose to the invincibles and so far unbeaten team Australia. As long as the Women in Blue do not lose by a huge margin versus the Aussies, wins against the other two opponents should be just enough to enter the semi-finals. Nonetheless, the face-offs versus the Bangla Tigers and South Africa won't be a cakewalk by any means whatsoever.

Talking about Bangladesh and South Africa, the former has only one win -- having beaten Pakistan -- whereas the Proteas are unbeaten, so far, after three outings. Thus, India have their task cut out to win at least two and not lose any game by a big margin.

Above all, they need to address their inconsistency and pull up their socks to progress ahead and become serious contenders.

After the England loss, Mithali said at the post-match presentation, "We definitely didn't have partnerships and it didn't go our way despite getting what we wanted after losing the toss. When you lose you always think you are short on runs. Getting 200 could have had the match go either way. Every game we've done well as a fielding unit. It is a department where we have improved. We need to work very hard with our batting. It is an honour to play alongside Jhulan Goswami. It is difficult for any fast bowler to play at this level consistently."

EXPLAINED! Here's how Mithali Raj's India can make it to CWC 2022 semi-finals after England drubbing

India endured a disappointing outing in the recently-concluded tour of South Africa as the visitors lost both Test and ODI series against the hosts. India got off to a great start in the three-match Test series with a comprehensive win in the series-opener in Centurion before losing the next two games in a row to concede the series 2-1.

India were deemed favourites against a South African team currently in transition after the retirements of some of the greats like AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis among others. However, India failed to live up to their favourites tag despite making a brilliant start as their dreams of clinching a maiden Test series win in South Africa were left shattered.

India were expected to bounce back strongly in the three-match ODI series. However, South Africa continued their winning run and registered a 3-0 whitewash against the KL Rahul-led side. India's defeat has led to severe criticism from all corners with many questioning the team's morale and composition in the aftermath of Virat Kohli leaving captaincy across all formats.

However, former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes the criticism is too far-fetched and that winning and losing is part of the game. Shastri cited how India have dominated in Test cricket over the last 5-6 years and continue to be one of the best Test teams in the world despite not managing to beat the Proteas in their own backyard.

"If you lose one series, you people start criticising. You can't win every game, there will be wins and losses," Ravi Shastri told the PTI.

"How can the standard go down suddenly? For five years, you have been the number one side in the world. When you have a win ratio of 65 per cent over the last five years, what is there to worry about? What is there to worry about, our rival teams should worry," he added.

India head coach Rahul Dravid had earlier termed the ODI series loss in South Africa an 'eye opener' for the team ahead of the ODI World Cup next year. Dravid also lamented the absence of all-rounders like Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja in the squad which would have provided balance to India's middle-order in the ODI series.

'How can the standard go down?': Ravi Shastri reacts to India's Test and ODI debacle in South Africa

India suffered a heartbreaking 4-run defeat in the third and final ODI of the three-match series against South Africa at the Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday (January 23). India came close to securing a comfortable win but ended up falling short at the end as the hosts completed a 3-0 whitewash in the ODI series. Deepak Chahar's sensational cameo of 54 runs had put India in a closing distance of the target but his dismissal led to India enduring an agonising defeat.

India head coach Rahul Dravid defended stand-in captain KL Rahul after India's 3-0 series loss and said there is scope for him to improve as a leader going forward. Rahul was appointed as the captain of the Indian team in ODIs in the absence of permanent skipper Rohit Sharma, who was ruled out due to a hamstring injury. India failed to even open their account in the ODI series in Rahul's captaincy as they suffered three back-to-back losses in the three games.

Rahul has been facing intense scrutiny over his poor captaincy after India's disappointing show in the series. Dravid came to the rescue of the Indian skipper and extended his support to him. "He did a good job. It's not easy to end on wrong side of the result," Dravid said when asked about Rahul's captaincy.

"He is just starting out and I think he did a very decent job. He will constantly get better as he captains," the India head coach added.

The India head coach said the whitewash at the hands of South Africa was a 'good eye opener' for the Indian team ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. India lost the first game against the Proteas by 31 runs before suffering a comprehensive seven-wicket defeat in the next game. The Men in Blue came close to bagging a consolation win in the final third encounter but ended up losing by 4 runs.

"This is a good eye-opener but we haven't played a lot of ODI cricket. We last played against England in March (after that second-string side played against Lanka under Dravid's coaching). We will play a lot of white-ball cricket before next year's World Cup. The guys who play at 6, 7, and 8 weren't available for selection and when they come back, the side will have a slightly different look," Dravid said.

Kohli's wife and Bollywood star Anushka Sharma was present in the stands at the stadium to cheer the former India captain as he played a fantastic knock for the visitors after being dismissed for a duck in the last game. It was a special moment for Kohli and his family but pictures and videos of Vamika soon went viral on social media.

Kohli and Anushka, who had recently celebrated the first birthday of their daughter earlier this month, have always made sure to not reveal her face in the media. The star couple has been seen requesting media persons not to click pictures of their daughter and respect their privacy on several occasions.

However, on Sunday, as Kohli dedicated his fifty this daughter Vamika, the cameras soon panned towards Anushka, who was standing with her daughter in the stands. The videos and pictures flooded on social media in no time. Several fans came out in the support of the star couple and slammed those sharing pictures and videos of their daughter.

It was a brilliant knock from Kohli, who had faced immense criticism from all corners after being dismissed on a duck in the second ODI against the Proteas which India lost by seven wickets. The former India captain bounced back in style and scored 65 runs off 84 balls laced with five fours.

Team India ended their disastrous tour of South Africa on Sunday (January 23). While Virat Kohli-led India were 1-0 up after winning the tour opener, i.e. the Centurion Test, everything went downhill from thereon. Kohli & Co. lost the Test series 2-1 and went onto be whitewashed by the Temba Bavuma-led South Africa in the preceding ODIs.

In limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma's absence, KL Rahul led the Men in Blue in the three ODIs. Under Rahul, India remained winless by putting up a listless performance in the 50-over leg. After the tour, Rahul believes India have done many things right in the limited-overs formats in the last few years but their white-ball cricket needs a transformation right now.

Rahul told Sports Today in an exclusive chat, "It's a huge honour and it's a dream come true to represent my country and lead my country. Yes, the results didn't go our way but I think there were massive learning. We are at a stage right now where we have World Cups as the focus and we are working towards getting better as a team. I feel like we have played very good cricket over the last four or five years but it's also time for us to get better and transform our white-ball cricket."

During the three ODIs, Rahul's captaincy was heavily criticised. The 29-year-old's field settings and bowling changes were ineffective, when compared to his South African counterpart Bavuma. The star Indian batter has also not had much success as an IPL captain. Nonetheless, Rahul remains undeterred and feels he is learning and will only get better.

"I don't use that as an excuse for not winning, but I think we are a work in progress as a team. I learned so much while leading. Losses make you so much stronger than starting off with victories. My career has always been that way. I have always got everything slowly. I am confident in my leadership skills and I know that I can bring out the best from my players. I know I can do well for my country and franchise," Rahul added.

It will be followed by two Tests and three T20Is versus Sri Lanka before the action moves to the IPL 2022 edition. It will be interesting to see if Rohit-led India come out with a new approach in the white-ball formats after the SA drubbing.

Time we get better and transform our white-ball cricket, says Rahul post India's listless performance vs SA

KL Rahul had a series to forget captaining India for the first time away from home as the visitors were clean swept 3-0 by South Africa in the recently-concluded ODI series. After back-to-back defeats in the first two matches, India lost the third and final ODI by 4 runs on Sunday to suffer a 3-0 whitewash against the Proteas.

Rahul, who was the stand-in skipper of the Indian team in the absence of permanent skipper Rohit Sharma, faced criticism from all corners for his poor leadership. Rahul was criticised by many for his poor field placements and bowling changes among others as India produced a below-par show in the ODI series.

Rahul failed to win even a single game as captain as India lost all three games in a row. He took to social media on Monday to pen an emotional note after the series defeat and said it was a learning curve for him and the rest of the team.

"Difficult journeys help you to improve and grow stronger. The results might not have gone our way, but we will learn from the mistakes," Rahul wrote in his tweet.

The opening batter added that it was an honour for him to lead the national team in the absence of Rohit and that the feeling of captaining the side can't be described in words. "Leading the country was a great honour, a proud moment which cannot be described in words," he added.

India had gotten off to the worst possible start in the ODI series as they lost the first game in Paarl by 31 runs after failing to chase down a target of 297 runs. They suffered a seven-wicket defeat in the second game before losing the third and final encounter by just 4 runs on Sunday.

After half-centuries from Virat Kohli (65) and Shikhar Dhawa (61) put India in a comfortable position in the 288-run chase in the third ODI on Sunday, the visitors lost the plot after the quick dismissals of Rishabh Pant (0), and Shreyas Iyer (26).

Suryakumar Yadav scored 39 off 32 balls while Deepak Chahar played a stunning cameo of 34-ball 54 but failed to take India home as they lost in the final over.

'Difficult journeys help you grow': KL Rahul pens emotional note after India's 3-0 series loss vs South Africa

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes the Indian team management will have to back Rishabh Pant patiently in order to groom him into a mature finisher for the team. Pant is facing intense criticism from all corners after throwing his wicket away in the third and final ODI against South Africa in Cape Town on Sunday.

Pant came out to bat at number four with Inda 118/3 in the 288-run chase after losing the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan. While he was expected to build a partnership with Virat Kohli, who was batting on the other end, Pant was dismissed by Andile Phehlukwayo as he went for a big shot.

He was caught in the deep by Sisanda Magala as he had to walk back without managing to open his account. Pant, who has often been criticised for his poor shot selection, has since been facing criticism as India lost the game by just 4 runs after falling short in the run-chase.

Former India opener Gambhir shared his views on Pant's swashbuckling approach and said the left-hander will play many match-winning innings for India in the future but will also play rash shots like the one he did on Sunday as it is his natural style of batting. Gambhir said Pant's batting is not like someone like Virat Kohli and he will continue playing in the same attacking manner.

“You have to accept him the way he is. He will play match-winning innings but also play rash shots like today. If the management is patient to back a player like this, then we can see him getting more opportunities," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

"You live by the sword, you die by the sword. Pant will continue playing in the manner that he's currently playing. He's not someone like Virat Kohli, who will slowly build his innings. Yes, the team management can groom Pant to do that but it won't happen overnight... it will take time," he added.

Pant's dismissal cost India big time as the middle-order failed to deliver once again. Suryakumar Yadav (39) and Shreyas Iyer (26) played two crucial knocks but failed to stay in the middle for long which led to the tail-enders getting exposed against the South African pacers.

Nonetheless, Deepak Chahar produced a sensational cameo of 34-ball 54 to keep India in the game till the end. He was dismissed in the 48th over with India needing only ten runs to win but South African bowlers managed to keep their nerves and pulled off a close win to clinch the series 3-0.

'Live by the sword, die by the sword': Gautam Gambhir on Rishabh Pant's agressive batting approach

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has blamed R Ashwin's return in India's limited-overs setup as one of the reasons behind the team's 3-0 whitewash against South Africa in the recently-concluded ODI series. India lost the third and final ODI against South Africa by 4 runs on Sunday (January 24) in Cape Town to lose the series 3-0.

Manjrekar, who has often been critical of Ashwin's performances away from home, has once again come down hard on the senior Indian spinner. Manjrekar believes India paid the price by picking Ashwin in their ODI squad. The off-spinner was not part of India's limited-overs squad since 2017 before making his comeback in the T20 World Cup 2021 last year.

Ashwin returned to India's ODI squad after a staggering five years as he was included in the squad for the ODI series against South Africa. However, he failed to make an impact and returned with just one wicket in the first two games. Ashwin finished with figures of 1/53 in the first ODI before going wicket-less while conceding 68 runs off his spell in the second game.

He was dropped from the playing XI in the third and final encounter as KL Rahul-led India aimed to avoid a clean sweep. However, India suffered back-to-back three defeats to lose the ODI series 3-0 after a disappointing 2-1 loss in the Test series.

“Ashwin strangely came back into India’s ODI plans for some reason. India paid a price for that. He played the two crucial games, did nothing much. (Yuzvendra) Chahal also under the scanner. Prasidh Krishna needs to be backed a bit more. Also, in 50-overs, Mohammed Shami can be a good option," said Manjrekar on ESPNCricinfo.

The cricketer turned commentator also stated that Bhuvneshwar Kumar's time with the Indian team is all but over as the senior pacer has been far from his best for quite a while now. He backed Deepak Chahar to be selected over Bhuvneshwar as the swing bowler in the team.

“Bowling wise, Bhuvneshwar Kumar had given signs even before this series that he is finding it difficult to get back to his best. I guess that issue is closed after seeing his performance in the series. And Deepak Chahar, the one ball to get Janneman Malan, should tell selectors that he is a better option," said Manjrekar.

The former cricketer called India's 3-0 series loss against the Proteas as one of their worst performances in the country.

“The way the match ended sums up the whole trip for India. It has to be one of the poorest Indian tours to South Africa. That’s how it was destined to be. It just wasn’t India’s time in South Africa. It is a bad loss," Manjrekar concluded.

Virat Kohli was left stunned on the other end as Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant threw his wicket away playing a rash shot in the third ODI against South Africa in Cape Town on Sunday (January 24). Recently, Kohli had defended Pant after he was criticised for his poor shot selection during the Test series against the Proteas.

However, Pant, who is known for his swashbuckling and aggressive style of batting, ended up making the same mistake once again. Pant came out to bat at number four after India lost Shikhar Dhawan's wicket on 116 runs in the 23rd over while chasing a challenging target of 288 runs. Pant went for a big shot the very first ball he faced from Andile Phehlukwayo and ended up paying the price.

It was an unnecessary rash shot from the left-hander, who has been often criticised for his poor shot selection for the Indian team. Pant was caught in the deep by Sisanda Magala as he was sent packing on a duck on the very first ball he faced in the game. Kohli, who was batting at the other end, was left stunned and gave a deadly stare to Pant after yet another casual error.

Kohli's reaction to Pant throwing his wicket away with a poor shot soon went viral on social media with fans criticising the left-hander for not valuing his wicket when playing for the country.

India were reduced to 118/3 after Pant's dismissal in the same over as Dhawan before Kohli, who played a fine knock of 65 runs off 84 balls, added a 38-run stand for the 4th wicket with Shreyas Iyer (26). Suryakumar Yadav scored 39 off 32 balls but the middle-order once again failed to deliver.

Deepak Chahar then came up with a sensational cameo of 34-ball 54 to keep India in the race till the end but his efforts went in vain as the visitors fell short by 4 runs to lose the game and concede the ODI series 3-0. India had earlier lost the Test series against South Africa 2-1.

Virat Kohli gives deadly stare to Rishabh Pant after he throws away his wicket for a duck in 3rd ODI - WATCH

India failed to avoid a series whitewash against a South African team in transition despite Deepak Chahar's scintillating 34-ball 54, losing the third One-day International by four runs here on Sunday to end a disastrous tour of the 'Rainbow Nation'.

Asked to bat first, South Africa were all out for 287 after Quinton de Kock's attacking hundred and Rassie van der Dussen's fluent half-century. In reply, India were all out for 283 in 49.2 overs, completely mishandling a chase that should have been completed smoothly.

Having taken two wickets with the ball, Chahar blazed away with the bat and hit five fours and two sixes, but his effort was not enough in the end.

All in all, the limited-overs series turned out to be one of the most disappointing outings for India in recent years, especially after having blanked the Proteas in their backyard in 2018. They began the tour on a rousing note, winning the opening Test by 113 runs but lost the plot thereafter, failing miserably to challenge the South Africans.

Looking to restore some pride in their last match of the tour, India overhauled their playing XI by making as many as four changes, bringing in Suryakumar Yadav, Jayant Yadav, Deepak Chahar and Prasidh Krishna. The ones to miss out were Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Venkatesh Iyer and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The changes did not bring about a change in India's fortunes as Suryakumar was dismissed for 39 off 32 balls.

India were last clean swept in an away ODI series by New Zealand (0-3) in 2020 under Virat Kohli. Incidentally, Rohit Sharma was absent from that series too, with a hamstring injury.

On Sunday, Kohli made a 65 off 84 balls, while opener Shikhar Dhawan struck a 73-ball 61, both scoring their second fifties of the three-match series. And it should have been India's game as it seemed for a good part but the side simply bungled it in the closing stages despite being well ahead on the asking rate thanks to Chahar's blitzkrieg.

Earlier, India rallied to bowl out South Africa under 300 after de Kock and van der Dussen's blazing knocks. De Kock struck 124 off 130 balls and added 144 runs for the fourth wicket with van der Dussen before India put the brakes on the home team's scoring by sending back both the batters in quick succession. After that, David Miller contributed a 38-ball 39 before the innings ended with a ball to spare.

With his sixth ODI century, de Kock equalled AB de Villiers' record of scoring the most hundreds against India by a South African. KL Rahul's decision to bowl first worked straightaway as Deepak Chahar (2/53) had opener Janneman Malan (1) caught behind with just eight runs on the board at the start of the third over.

It was a big wicket for the Indians as Malan came into the inconsequential final ODI on the back of a neat 91-run knock in the Proteas' series-clinching second ODI win at Paarl. And credit for that must go to Chahar who got his fullish delivery to move away after angling it in, leaving Malan clueless.

A direct hit from India skipper KL Rahul from mid-off, ended his in-form counterpart Temba Bavuma's brief stay in the middle as the batter failed to reach the non-striker's end in time. Bavuma making his way back to the dressing room for eight runs was another big break for India as the South Africa captain had scored a century in the opening fixture and also looked solid in the second outing.

After bagging two wickets in the powerplay, India seemed to be headed in the right direction when Aiden Markram's attempted pull shot failed to clear substitute fielder Ruturaj Gaikwad in the deep square leg region, leaving the hosts at 70 for three in the 13th over.

However, the duo of De Kock and Van der Dussen got together and forged an excellent partnership, mixing caution with aggression to deflate the Indian bowling attack. De Kock moved into the 90s with two boundaries and then produced a flat-batted six straight over Prasidh Krishna's (3/59) head. But he got stuck on 99 for a while before finally getting to the three-figure mark by driving Shreyas Iyer to the left of sweeper cover for two runs.

Van der Dussen hit Yuzvendra Chahal through mid-wicket for four, as the two upped the ante with their vast range of strokes on all sides of the wicket. But just when it looked like the two batters were taking the game away form India, the visitors got rid of both of them. De Kock got out to a Jasprit Bumrah (2/52) short ball, giving Shikhar Dhawan a simple catch at deep square leg, and then, Chahal had van der Dussen brilliant caught by Iyer in the deep.

Deepak Chahar's cameo in vain as South Africa beat India by 4 runs in a thriller to clean sweep ODI series

South Africa spinner Tabraiz Shamsi upheld the spirit of cricket with his heartwarming post after dismissing Rishabh Pant in the second ODI between India and South Africa at the Boland Park in Paarl on Friday. Pant had a brilliant outing in the game as he top-scored for India with a stunning knock of 85 runs off 71 balls. The left-hander looked in amazing touch and took the Proteas bowlers to the cleaners during his sensational innings.

After opting to bat first in the must-win game, India were off to a decent start with a 63-run stand between openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan before losing Dhawan and Virat Kohli in quick succession. India were in desperate need of a good partnership when Rahul and Pant combined to steady the ship for the visitors.

While Rahul played the anchor's role to perfection, Pant took the aggressive route and went after the South African bowlers. He enjoyed a great battle with Proteas spinner Shamsi and took him to the cleaners in his initial overs. Pant's onslaught forced South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma to take Shamsi off the attack.

He was brought on later and the move paid off as Shamsi finally managed to dismiss Pant in his 4th over. The spinner celebrated aggressively but didn't forget to laud Pant for his fantastic knock. Shamsi was seen giving Pant a pat on his back for his brilliant knock after dismissing him.

A day after the game, Shamsi took to social media to post a picture of himself with Pant and wrote a heartwarming message. "Work hard... play hard.... but never cross the line," Shamsi captioned the picture where he can be seen appreciating Pant for his 85-run-knock.

'Never cross the line': Tabraiz Shamsi shares heartwarming post after dismissing Rishabh Pant in 2nd ODI

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has issued a warning to Virat Kohli after his flop show in the second ODI against South Africa on Friday (January 21). Kohli was dismissed for a five-ball duck as India lost the game by seven wickets to concede the three-match ODI series against the Proteas. With back-to-back wins in the first two games, South Africa have taken an unassailable lead and clinched the series.

Kohli, who has not been at his best with the willow for a while now, is currently undergoing a rough patch in his international career. From being the captain of the Indian team across all three formats just a few months ago, Kohli is now a part of the side only as a pure batter.

While it was his choice to leave the T20I captaincy last year, he was later replaced as the ODI captain of the side by the BCCI and the selectors before leaving Test captaincy last week. Kohli's place in the playing XI was always safe when he was captaining India across all formats, however, the pressure has increased on him post leaving captaincy.

Harbhajan believes Kohli no more has a guaranteed spot in the playing XI in white-ball cricket and will have to perform consistently to ensure his place in the team is safe. Harbhajan cited the examples of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev while issuing a warning to Kohli that only performances will guarantee him a spot in the team going forward.

"When a captain steps down after seven years, a lot of people feel surprised in and outside the team. I myself was very surprised that he perhaps made this decision in a hurry. But obviously, Virat knows what's in his heart, what are his future plans and what he wants to do in the future. But when you are captain, things are different. As a batter, he'll have a different pressure upon him. We all know he's a big player but when you are captain you don't have to worry about your selection. You are always selected," Harbhajan said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"But no matter how big a player you are - whether you are Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, (Sunil) Gavaskar, or anyone - you feel the pressure when you don't perform. He'll feel a pressure that wasn't there for the past 7 years. But I also want to say that in these seven years he's performed the best in world cricket as a captain. I hope his performance as a batter continues to be equally good and he keeps winning Team India matches as he did as a captain," he added.

Harbhajan Singh issues warning to Virat Kohli: 'When you are captain you don't worry about selection'

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has slammed KL Rahul for the lack of intensity in his captaincy after India's seven-wicket loss in the second ODI against South Africa on Friday (November 21). India failed to defend a total of 287 runs after a below-par bowling show as South Africa clinched the three-match ODI series with back-to-back wins in the first two games.

While the likes of Virat Kohli (0) and Shreyas Iyer (11) were dismissed cheaply, the Indian bowlers were taken to the cleaners by South African openers Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock. Malan slammed a brilliant 91 off 108 balls while De Kock scored a quickfire 78 off 66 balls. The duo posted an opening stand of 132 runs to set up a comfortable win for the hosts and bat India out of the game.

Stand-in skipper Rahul, who has been leading India in the absence of permanent captain Rohit Sharma, has been facing the flak from all corners over the team's poor show. Speaking in a video on his YouTube channel, Kaneria criticised Rahul and said there was no intensity in his captaincy. The former Pakistan spinner also alleged that there appears to be a divide in the Indian dressing room with former skipper Kohli looking disconnected from the team.

"There's no intensity in KL Rahul's captaincy. Virat looks distant, disconnected from the team. When a review is being taken, he doesn't close in as much and he isn't giving a lot of input to the captain. You get to know what's going inside a cricketer's heart by judging their body language," said Kaneria.

"There seems to be a division within the team. Team India isn't showing the intensity and the approach that Virat used to bring to the team (when he was captain). Going by KL Rahul's captaincy, Rohit Sharma should come back as captain. KL Rahul is not ready to lead the team," he added.

After losing the Test series 2-1, India would have hoped to bounce back strongly in the ongoing ODI series against the Proteas. However, the Rahul-led side suffered back-to-back losses in the first two matches to concede the series. India will be hoping to bag a consolation win and finish the series on a high when the two teams meet in the third and final ODI of the series in Cape Town on Sunday.

No intensity in KL Rahul's captaincy, Virat Kohli looks disconnected: Ex-Pak spinner after India's poor show

South Africa bagged their second win on the trot in the ongoing three-match ODI series against India as they thrashed the visitors by seven wickets in the second ODI at the Boland Park in Paarl on Friday (January 21). It was yet another dominant performance from the hosts, who chased down the target of 288 runs comfortably with seven wickets to spare.

Rishabh Pant's brilliant knock of 85 runs went in vain as India lost the game comprehensively and conceded the series with back-to-back defeats. It was a must-win game for the KL Rahul-led side after a 31-run loss in the series opener at the same venue. However, South Africa once again proved too good for the Men in Blue.

Opting to bat first, India got off to a decent start with a 63-run stand for the first wicket between openers Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan. Aiden Markram drew the first blood for the Proteas as he got rid of Dhawan on 29 off 38 balls before Keshav Mahara sent Virat Kohli packing on a duck to pile misery on India.

However, Rahul then combined with Pant to steady the ship as the duo put together a 115-run stand for the third wicket. While Rahul scored 55 off 79 balls, Pant displayed some brilliant strokeplay in his quickfire 85 off just 71 balls. The wicket-keeper batter missed out on a well-deserved hundred but created the record for the highest individual score by an Indian wicket-keeper batter in an ODI in South Africa.

With the help of half-centuries from Rahul, Pant and crucial cameos from Shardul Thakur (40) and R Ashwin (25), India posted a fighting total of 287 runs on the board in their quota of 50 overs. However, the bowlers let the visitors down as South Africa had chased down the target comfortably.

Openers Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock slammed half-centuries apiece to set up an easy chase for the hosts. While De Kock scored 78 off 66 balls laced with seven fours and three sixes, Malan missed out his century by just nine runs as he notched up a superb 91 off 108 balls.

The South African openers took the Indian bowlers to the cleaners and got the hosts off to a perfect start in the run-chase. The duo added a huge stand of 132 runs for the first wicket before handy knocks from skipper Temba Bavuma (35), Aiden Markram (37) and Rassie van der Dussen (37) helped South Africa overhaul the target with 11 balls to spare.
