Heinrich Klaasen scored a brilliant 46-ball-81 as South Africa defeated India by four wickets to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series on Sunday. Chasing a target of 149 on a tricky pitch, the Proteas lost three early wickets with Bhuvneshwar Kumar claiming all three scalps. However, Klassen looked quite comfortable against the Indian bowlers and with 7 fours and 5 sixes, he was able to clinch the game for the visitors with the help of David Miller. Bhuvneshwar ended up with impressive bowling figures of 4/13 in 4 overs, but it was not enough to stop a second consecutive loss for India.

Klassen was well supported by skipper Temba Bavuma as he scored 35 off 30 balls and with the match getting closer towards the end, Miller continued his brilliant form with 20 off 15 deliveries.

Earlier, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan failed to capitalise on good starts while Anrich Nortje took two wickets as the hosts were restricted to 149/6 in Cuttack. The Indian batsmen failed to score at a steady pace and with Kagiso Rabada bothering them with a strict line and length, they failed to replicate their good start in the previous match in Delhi.

India kept losing wickets at regular intervals as the pitch provided assistance to the pacers and there were a number of good starts but none of them went on to become big knocks. Bhuvneshwar Kumar heroics in vain as India slump to four-wicket loss against South Africa

India went down to Temba Bavuma-led South Africa by four wickets to lose the second T20I after conceding the series opener, on June 09. On Sunday evening (June 12), the Rishabh Pant-led hosts locked horns with the Proteas for the second encounter, of the five-match series, with an aim to level the scoreline 1-1.

However, Pant & Co. were no match to the visiting side who continued their winning run versus India across formats in the calendar year. Being asked to bat first, India rode on Ishan Kishan's 34, Shreyas Iyer's 40 and Dinesh Karthik's unbeaten 30 to post 148-6. In reply, SA was 29-3 before Heinrich Klaasen's 46-ball 81 propelled them to a four-wicket win, with 10 balls to spare.

After the clash, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer opined on Pant's captaincy. Jaffer took note of Pant's IPL captaincy, where he leads the Delhi Capitals (DC), and stated that the 24-year-old panics easily when the situation gets intense in the middle.

In an ESPNCricinfo show, the ex-Indian opener and Punjab Kings (PBKS) batting coach was asked whether Pant changes his plans and strategies too easily. To this, he agreed and pointed out, "Yes, we saw something similar in the IPL as well. I feel the more he captains, the better he'll get. But, yes, at this stage, I think when the match gets tight, he panics a bit."

Pant was criticised for not using Yuzvendra Chahal's full quota of overs in the series opener loss, in New Delhi, India, and in the second T20I, he was lashed out for over-relying on Chahal. Even in IPL 2022, the young wicketkeeper made several errors in judgments as a skipper, including poor usage of DRS and rotation of bowlers (along with dropping some crucial catches), as DC didn't qualify for the playoffs.

At the post-match presentation, Pant said, "We were 10-15 runs short. Bhuvi and the fast bowlers bowled well in the first 7-8 overs. But after that we weren't up to the mark. In the second half we needed wickets, but we couldn't get those wickets. They (Klaasen and Bavuma) actually batted really well. We could have bowled better, hope we improve in the next game. We need to win all the remaining three games now."

'When match gets tight...' - Ex-Indian opener on Rishabh Pant's captaincy after India go 2-0 down vs SA

Rishabh Pant-led India came to the second T20I, of the five-match series, versus South Africa with an aim to level the scoreline after a loss in the first encounter. However, the script remained the same for the home side as they conceded the game by four wickets at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on Sunday evening (June 12).

Being asked to bat first, India rode on Ishan Kishan's 34, Shreyas Iyer's 40 and Dinesh Karthik's unbeaten 30 to post a moderate 148-6 in 20 overs on a difficult batting track. In reply, Temba Bavuma-led SA reached the target in 18.2 overs courtesy of Heinrich Klaasen's rapid 81. With the series now on the line, as Proteas are one win away from taking an unassailable lead, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Rahul Dravid-led thinktank to include Jammu & Kashmir pacer Umran Malik in the playing XI for the decisive third T20I.

"The first player I got excited to see was Sachin Tendulkar. The second player is Umran Malik." Gavaskar said after the match. "He should play," Gavaskar added.

Talking about the 22-year-old Umran, he impressed one and all in his first full IPL season which was held recently. Playing for the one-time winners Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Umran churned out as many as 22 wickets and was also able to clock over 150kph at regular intervals. Thus, Gavaskar feels his extra pace will come in handy for Pant & Co., who have struggled for wickets in the middle overs. For the unversed, Umran was used extensively in the middle overs by SRH and he was quite successful in that phase of the game for the franchise in IPL 2022. Thus, he can be a valuable addition.

'He should play': Sunil Gavaskar urges India to play Umran Malik in 3rd T20I with series on the line vs SA

India and South Africa played the second T20I, of the five-match series, on Sunday evening (June 12) at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack. The venue hosted an international game after a long gap of 2.5 years as it was a jam-packed stadium that saw the Men in Blue go down to the Proteas by four wickets in a moderate-scoring affair.

However, a controversy erupted following the conclusion of the match. It has been brought to notice that the ticket sale scandal broke out for the Cuttack T20I. According to a report by the New Indian Express, the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) had allotted as many as 29,154 seats -- out of the 44,234 -- in the stadium for the second T20I. Out of 29,154, around 8,000 seats were kept for affiliated units/office bearers/BCCI affiliated units. On the other hand, the remaining ones were to be divided between online and offline channel sales for the cricket fans.

Approximately, around 12,093 tickets were available to be purchased on spot via nine designated counters whereas the leftover 9,061 were for solely fans, who could buy the tickets online. The offline tickets were sold out on the opening day itself. Thus, many black marketers broke in and bought tickets at large via online portals as well as off the counters (resorting to brokers and people from the labour class).

After the bulk purchase, the black marketers then sold the passes through websites and social media platforms -- using WhatsApp and other mediums, at much higher rates. For the unversed, according to the rules, one single person could've only bought two tickets. However, many ended up getting over 10 tickets from the site. Moreover, the black marketers also got hold of complimentary passes.

The price of tickets for the second T20I match between India and the Proteas was Rs 900 each for galleries 1, 3 and 5. The cost for gallery 2 was Rs 700 whereas it was ten times the cost for gallery 4 (Rs 7000). Nonetheless, the black marketers had a field day as they sold gallery No.2 tickets for Rs 5000 (for more than Rs 4,000), gallery No. 3 tickets for over Rs 5000 and gallery No.4 tickets went for Rs 15000 (more than double the original price), as per sources.

India vs SA: Black marketers have field day as ticket sale scandal occurs in Cuttack T20I - Reports

India will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they take on South Africa in the second T20I of the ongoing five-match series at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday (June 12). India lost the series-opener by seven wickets against the Proteas in New Delhi after failing to defend a strong total of 211 runs and will be hoping to produce a better show with the ball on Sunday.

In the absence of KL Rahul and regular skipper Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant led the Indian team for the first time in his career but failed to get off to a winning start. Batting first, India got off to a good start and rode on opener Ishan Kishan's brilliant 76 off 48 balls along with crucial knocks from Pant and Hardik Pandya to post 211 runs on the board.

However, the bowlers failed to defend the total and were taken to the cleaners by Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller, who slammed unbeaten half-centuries apiece to help South Africa win with five balls to spare. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel - India's two death overs specialists both conceded a whopping 43 runs each in their quota of 4 overs.

The duo was ripped apart by Miller and Van der Dussen who showed no mercy to the Indian bowlers. While South Africa will be looking to bag their second win on the trot after clinching the series-opener in New Delhi, India will be hopeful of returning to winning ways and levelling the series 1-1.

After the bowling attack's failure in the opening game, the hosts might want to make a few changes. India have young Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh in their squad who were both impressive in the recently-concluded IPL 2022 and can be handed their dream debut.

While Umran can consistently clock over 150kmph, Arshdeep has been exceptional in the death overs with his precise yorkers. India can also look at bringing Deepak Hooda in the line-up to add more stability to their batting line-up. But it remains to be seen who will make way for Hooda in the line-up if he plays.

India vs South Africa, 2nd T20I prediction:

India were expected to defend the 211-run total comfortably in the series-opener in New Delhi but their bowling attack was taken to the cleaners by Miller and Van der Dussen, who made it a cakewalk for the Proteas. India will be hoping not to repeat those mistakes this time around and are likely to level the series 1-1 on Sunday.

IND vs SA prediction: Who will win 2nd T20I between India and South Africa in Cuttack?

South Africa pulled off a stunning run-chase of 212 runs to beat India by seven wickets in the first T20I of the five-match series at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday (June 09). It was a brilliant batting performance from the Proteas, who rode on David Miller's unbeaten 64 off 31 balls and Rassie van der Dussen's 75 not out off 46 balls to chase down 212 runs with 5 balls to spare and give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the series.

Despite the absence of the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul, India named a strong playing XI under captain Rishabh Pant for the series opener. Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad got the team off to a brilliant start with a 57-run stand for the first wicket before the likes of Pant, Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya all made crucial contributions to propel India to 211 runs.

While it was a great batting effort from the Indian team with Kishan playing a standout knock of 48-ball 76, Hardik's actions in the final over of the innings left many baffled on social media. Hardik, who was batting with Dinesh Karthik in the 20th over, surprisingly denied the wicket-keeper batter a single on the penultimate ball of the final over.

Facing Anrich Nortje in the 20th over, Hardik guided a full-length delivery from Nortje towards deep mid-wicket on the 5th ball. A single was easily available but Hardik decided against taking it leaving Karthik seemingly dejected on the other end. The incident soon became a major talking point on social media with fans bashing Hardik for the decision.

Both Karthik and Hardik made their return to the Indian team after impressing in the recently-concluded IPL 2022. While Hardik was the highest run-getter for his side Gujarat Titans, Karthik took the season by a storm with his finishing exploits for RCB. Both the batters will be battling for the finisher's role in the Indian side in the lead up to the T20 World Cup next year.

While Hardik spent a long spell on the sidelines recovering from a back injury post the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021 last year, Karthik had last played for India during the ODI World Cup in 2019. After losing the first game by seven wickets, India will be hoping to bounce back when they lock horns with South Africa in the second T20I of the series on Sunday (June 12).

South Africa pulled off a stunning run-chase of 212 runs to beat India by seven wickets in the first T20I of the five-match series at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday (June 09).

Rishabh Pant-led India faced South Africa in the five-match T20I series opener in New Delhi, India on Thursday evening (June 09). In the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, vice-captain KL Rahul, former skipper Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and some other key players, Pant & Co. couldn't help India achieve a world record of most successive T20I wins (13) courtesy of David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen's fifties in a run-fest in New Delhi, India.

Being asked to bat first, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, openers Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad took their chances and were lucky enough initially -- being rewarded for their positive intent -- as they put on a 57-run opening stand.

Against the run of play, Ruturaj fell but Ishan continued and hammered the bowlers whereas No. 3 batter Shreyas Iyer took on Tabraiz Shamsi. While Ishan fell for a 48-ball 76, and Iyer followed suit, Pant and Hardik Pandya's cameos (12-ball 31*) took India to 211-4, the highest T20I score at the venue.

In reply, South Africa started with some good strokes before skipper Temba Bavuma fell to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Quinton de Kock got a start whereas pinch-hitter Dwaine Pretorius went hard from his end as SA remained in the hunt.

Harshal Patel's change of pace completely outfoxed Pretorius (13-ball 29) as the onus quickly fell on in-form finisher David Miller. He was assisted by Rassie van der Dussen (75 not out), who wasn't at his best, but stood firm with Miller to keep Proteas alive.

Miller (unbeaten 64) got more than he could have asked for from Rassie, who was struggling in the middle, as the latter came to his own and smashed Harshal Patel in the 17th over, accumulating 22 runs (all in boundaries). From thereon, there was no looking back for the Proteas who rode on Miller-Rassie's unbroken 131-run fourth-wicket stand. The Harshal over sealed the deal for the visitors and they also prevented India from achieving a world record with the most successive T20I victories. In addition, Bavuma & Co. recorded their highest successful run-chase ever.

Thus, the trio of Afghanistan, Romania and India enjoyed a 12-match winning streak, however, the latter couldn't create history on Thursday evening.

1st T20I: David Miller, Rassie van der Dussen prevent India from achieving world record, SA win by 7 wickets

Pace sensation Umran Malik earned his maiden call-up to the Indian squad after his impressive show in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Umran took the season by a storm with his sensational pace and finished as the highest wicket-taker for SRH in IPL 2022 with 22 scalps to his name in 14 matches. Umran's ability to clock 150 kmph consistently with the ball makes him a rare commodity and he is likely to soon make his India debut after being included in the squad for the ongoing T20I series against South Africa.

He was not named in the playing XI for the first T20I against the Proteas on Thursday as India went with three pacers in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel and Avesh Khan. Many had expected Umran to feature in the line-up but the Indian team management is probably mindful of not rushing the young gun into the XI.

Former India captain Kapil Dev shared his views on Umran's rise and said he feels it is 'too early' for the young pacer to play for India. The legendary all-rounder said there is no derth of talent in the country but it often happens that good players disappear soon after coming to limelight.

"I am very happy with his selection. But it's too early... you have to give him at least two-three years at this level. We reserve high praise for a player, then he disappears after one year... but there's no lack of talent," Kapil Dev said on Uncut YouTube channel.

"I want Umran to keep himself in a good environment and continue the hard work at the same pace. By seeing his ability, I don't think he lacks anything. He needs to develop a great mindset moving forward, and also needs to consult good bowlers and see footage of their bowling," he added.

Umran was roped in as a net bowler for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL last year before being included in the main squad as a replacemnet for injured fast bowler T Natrajan. He played only a handful of games last season but did enough to impress the team management and get retained for IPL 2022.

He went on to play all matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022 and rattled the batters with his sublime pace. He also bowled the second quickest delivery of the season at 157 kmph and is now just one step away from playing for India.

"He bowls fast and takes wickets as well. We have seen players who can bowl fast but can't pick up wickets. This young guy has done both. Maybe that's why he got a call-up so early. The IPL has opened the door to the national team for many players. But we have to give them two-three years at the international level," Kapil said.

Hardik Pandya denying a single to Dinesh Karthik on the penultimate ball of the final over of India's innings in the first T20I against South Africa became one of the major talking points of the game India lost the game by seven wickets at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday despite posting a strong total of 212 runs on the board as the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

The incident happened in the 20th over of India's innings when Hardik was out in the middle with Karthik. On the 5th delivery from South African pacer Anrich Nortje, Hardik played a shot towards deep mid-wicket and had a chance to run an easy single. However, he decided to keep the strike and not take the run despite a proper batter in Karthik on the other end.

The incident soon became a talking point on social media with many criticising Hardik for his actions. Former India pacer Ashish Nehra was asked for his views on the incident post the match. Nehra is the head coach of Hardik's IPL side Gujarat Titans, who won the IPL 2022 title in their debut season this year.

Nehra came with a funny response and said it was Karthik on the non-striker's end and not him so he won't be able to answer why Hardik didn't opt for the single. "He should have taken a single in that final over. Dinesh Karthik was at the other end, it wasn't me," said Nehra during a discussion on Cricbuzz.

Both Hardik and Karthik made their comeback to the Indian squad after a long time. While Karthik returned to the team after a gap of three years having last played for the Men in Blue during the ODI World Cup in 2019, Hardik spent a few months on the sidelines following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup last year to recover from his back injury fully.

Rishabh Pant didn't have an ideal start to his stint as the captain of the Indian team after South Africa thrashed the hosts by seven wickets in the 1st T20I of the five-match series at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday (June 09). South Africa chased down a massive target of 212 runs comfortably to go 1-0 up in the series and bring an end to India's winning streak of 12 matches in T20Is.

Asked to bat first in the game, India got off to a good start with openers Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad adding 57 runs for the first wicket. After Gaikwad's departure on 23 off 15 balls, Kishan continued his assault from one end and slammed a brilliant 76 off just 48 deliveries laced with 11 fours and three sixes.

He added an 80-run stand for the second wicket with Shreyas Iyer (36) before skipper Pant (29 off 16) and Hardik Pandya (31 off 12) propelled India to 212 runs in 20 overs. While India were expected to defend the target comfortably, the South African batters dominated the proceedings during the run-chase.

With the loss, Pant joined former India skipper Virat Kohli on an unwanted list of captains who have lost their first game for the Men in Blue. Kohli had lost his first match as an India captain against England in Kanpur in 2017. Kohli and Pant are the only two captains to have lost in their respective first matches as captains for India.

While Miller scored a quickfire 54 off 31 balls, Van der Dussen scored 75 off 46 balls to take South Africa over the line with five balls to spare and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Rishabh Pant joins Virat Kohli in unwanted list after India lose first T20I against South Africa by 7 wickets

Ishan Kishan slammed a sensational half-century as India locked horns with South Africa in the 1st T20I at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday (June 09). Asked to bat first after losing the toss in the series-opener, Ishan and his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad got India off to a flying start and added 57 runs for the first wicket. The duo might not have gotten a chance to open in the first game had it not been for an injury to KL Rahul.

India are missing both Rahul and skipper Rohit Sharma in the ongoing five-match T20I series against the Proteas allowing Ishan to open with Gaikwad. While there is no denying the intense competition as far as opening slots are considered in the Indian team, many believe Kishan should be given more chances at the top.

The young explosive left-hander has the ability to take on the bowlers from the word go and can single-handedly destroy bowling attacks on his day. On Thursday, Kishan was in fine form once again as he took the South Africa bowlers to the cleaners wen route to his 48-ball 76 laced with 11 fours and 3 sixes.

The young southpaw was asked if he believes he should be getting regular chances to open for the Indian team going forward. Kishan said he cannot ask the likes of Rohit and Rahul to drop themselves to let him play as an opener for the Men in Blue in T20Is. Kishan said he would like to make the most of opportunities that come his way and leave the rest to the coaches and the Indian team management.

India rode on Kishan's 48-ball 76 and crucial knocks from the likes of skipper Rishabh Pant (29 off 16), Shreyas Iyer (36 off 27) and Hardik Pandya (31 off 12) to post a strong total of 211 runs on the board, batting first. Can't ask Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul to drop themselves to make me play in Team India: Ishan Kishan

Hardik Pandya's captaincy stocks have risen ever since he impressed one and all with his leadership qualities in the IPL 2022 edition. In what was the star all-rounder's first-ever season as captain, the 28-year-old made a huge mark by leading the debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden title, beating Rajasthan Royasl (RR) with ease in the final.

Hardik's calm and composed nature on the field, leading the charge in all departments despite additional responsibility and some tactical decisions stood out as many former cricketers and experts of the game are impressed with his game-reading abilities as captain. Ahead of the India-South Africa T20Is, where Hardik has been promoted as the vice-captain after Rishabh Pant replaced an injured KL Rahul to become the new stand-in skipper, former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh made a huge claim on Hardik.

"One of the biggest revelations in this year's IPL was the advent of Hardik Pandya as the skipper of the Gujarat Titans and the way he led the team from the front to win the coveted title is definitely praiseworthy. His intent and positive captaincy are signs that he can lead Team India in the future," Harbhajan told PTI in an interview.

'He can lead Team India in future' - Harbhajan Singh lavishes praise on Hardik Pandya's leadership

Injury-hit Team India will face Temba Bavuma-led South Africa in the series opener of the five-match T20Is at home on Thursday evening (June 09), in New Delhi, India. On Wednesday evening (June 08), news broke out that stand-in captain KL Rahul has been injured, along with wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, hence, Rishabh Pant will lead India in the five T20Is versus the Proteas.

For the unversed, Pant was already named the captain when the BCCI selection committee named a Rohit Sharma-less Indian squad for the SA T20Is. With big names such as Rohit, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah rested, and now with Rahul's absence, Pant has a huge task to keep India's winning run intact in the shortest format (12), who are one victory away from creating a new world record of most successive T20I wins.

As soon as Pant will enter the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi for the coin toss with Bavuma, he will join an elite list by going past former captains Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. Suresh Raina, the former all-rounder, is the youngest ever Indian captain in men's T20Is (23 years and 197 days), hence, Pant is all set to join him at the second spot. The 24-year-old Pant will then be followed by MS Dhoni (who captained in T20Is at 26), Virender Sehwag (who was 28 when he led India in their first-ever T20I in 2006) and Virat.

Virat led India for the first time in the shortest format in early 2017, when he was 28 years old. Hence, Pant will join some big players on an elusive list as he is set to lead India for the first time ever on Thursday evening.

It will be interesting to see how Pant marshalls his troops, comprising Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Avesh Khan, Umran Malik and some experienced campaigners such as Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Hardik will serve as Pant's deputy in the five T20Is.

India vs SA: Captain Rishabh Pant set to join elite list during 1st T20I, to go past Virat Kohli & MS Dhoni

India and South Africa will lock horns with each other in what is expected to be a mouth-watering five-match T20I series with the opening game to be played on Thursday evening (June 09). While Temba Bavuma-led Proteas are a strong squad, India have been hit with several injury concerns after their famed trio -- regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah -- were rested.

Ahead of the first T20I, news broke out from the Indian camp that regular vice-captain and stand-in skipper KL Rahul has been injured, along with wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Hence, Rishabh Pant is all set to don the captain's hat for the first time ever for Team India whereas the 28-year-old IPL-winning skipper Hardik Pandya will be his deputy for the series. Thus, India have lots riding on them to beat Proteas and also keep their unbeaten streak alive in the shortest format (currently at 12). If India win the series opener, they will create a world record of winning the most consecutive T20Is.

Match prediction for India vs SA 1st T20I: The sweltering heat of a typical June afternoon is set to trouble players from both sides. While the majority of them have played IPL 2022, the heat and humidity has just worsened in the national capital. Dew is, however, expected in the evening game and, hence, both sides' captains will prefer batting second, which has become a trend in the shortest format.

For India, they will have some issues finalising their playing XI after injuries to Rahul and Kuldeep. Nonetheless, they still have a lot of options, especially in bowling, but it will be interesting to see the all-rounders and bowlers who get the nod. In batting, the onus will lie on Ishan Kishan-Ruturaj Gaikwad, Pant, in-form finishers Hardik and Dinesh Karthik (if he plays). For SA, they have their main players but it remains to be seen how they adapt to the conditions and the surface in Delhi.

India vs South Africa 1st T20I: Match prediction and likely playing XIs of both teams

Hardik Pandya made heads turn in the recently-concluded IPL 2022. Under him, debutants Gujarat Titans won their maiden championship whereas Hardik impressed with 487 runs and eight wickets overall. His leadership was exemplary as he brought the best out of his teammates and led with aplomb.

'His leadership was impressive in IPL 2022' - Rahul Dravid all praise for Hardik Pandya ahead of SA T20Is

Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant was in for a surprise on Wednesday (June 08) as he was named captain of the Indian cricket team just a day ahead of the start of the T20I series against South Africa at home. KL Rahul had been appointed as the captain of the side in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma. However, Rahul was ruled out of the five-match series due to an injury on Wednesday paving way for Pant to be named captain.

Pant, who is part of the Indian team's leadership group under captain Rohit, will now geat a chance to lead the team for the first tim in his career. Pant has never captained the Indian team but has been leading the Delhi Capitals (DC) for the past two seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has significant experience behind his back.

Reacting to his appointment as captain of the Indian team, Pant said it was a good feeling overall but he would have liked the announcement to have come under better circumstances. Rahul along with spinner Kuldeep Yadav have been ruled out of the series due to injuries which is a huge blow for the Indian team ahead of the T20I series against the Proteas.

“It is a very good feeling, did not come under very good circumstances but at the same time I am feeling happy. I would like to thank the BCCI for giving me this opportunity to lead the Indian side. I will try to make the most out of it. Thank you to all my well-wishers for supporting me in my journey through the thick and thin of my cricketing career. I will look to make it a base and keep improving and keep making my life better and better each and every day," Pant said during a press conference ahead of the first ODI on Wednesday.

With Rahul no more in the scheme of things, India have been left with fewer options on top of the order. While Shikhar Dhawan is not part of the squad, Rohit has been rested and Rahul is now ruled out leaving India with only two specialist openers in Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Venkatesh Iyer didn't have a great season with KKR in IPL 2022 as an opener and is unlikely to get a chance at the top against the Proteas. When asked about the change in the batting order in Rahul's absence, Pant admitted India do not have many options at the top and it remains to be seen what combination will be the best for the hosts.

“I think there would not be much change in the batting order as KL would have opened. We do not have many openers, we will discuss about it after some time," said Pant.

The stand-in skipper also hinted at a change in India's strategy and approach as far as T20 cricket is concerned. Pant said the hosts are looking to play a different brand of cricket with the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia not far away now.

“I think as a team we have thought about certain goals we want to achieve as a team. At the end, we have the World Cup at the back of our head and we are preparing for that. In the coming days, you will see there will be changes and how we play cricket I guess," Pant added.

'Didn't come under very good circumstances': Rishabh Pant on captaining India for the first time in his career

India have been handed a massive blow ahead of the start of the T20I series against South Africa as captain KL Rahul has been ruled out due to an injury. Along with Rahul, spinner Kuldeep Yadav has also been ruled out of the five-match series owing to an injury. Rahul was supposed to lead the team in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who has been rested for the series.

However, with an injury ruling him out, Rishabh Pant will now replace him as captain for the five T20Is. This will be the first time Pant will captain the Indian team having led Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the last two seasons. Both Pant and Rahul remain part of India's leadership group under regular captain Rohit.

BCCI confirmed the development on Wednesday and said star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will be the vice-captain for the T20I series against South Africa. Hardik enjoyed a phenomenal campaign for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the recently-concluded IPL 2022 by leading them to their maiden title in their debut season.

BCCI confirmed that Rahul has injured his right groin while Kuldeep will miss out after getting hit on his right hand while batting in the nets on Tuesday (June 07). No replacements have been named yet for the duo.

Rishabh Pant to lead India in T20I series vs SA after KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav ruled out due to injury

Umran Malik had made heads turn throughout the IPL 2022 edition. His raw pace, deadly yorkers and some tidy spells changed the complexion of the game in favour of Kane Williamson-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before the one-time winners' group stage exit.

Umran, however, returned with as many as 22 wickets and was the fourth-highest wicket-taker, overall, in the 15th season of the IPL, which ended with Gujarat Titans (GT) being crowned the eventual winners. Further, the Jammu & Kashmir speedster bowled the fastest ball of the match in every game SRH featured in and held the record for bowling the quickest ball of the season (157 kph) before Lockie Ferguson went past him in the final (by clocking 157.3 kph).

After a memorable IPL 2022 season, Umran is now part of India's T20I squad for the home series versus South Africa, which gets underway on June 09 in New Delhi. Before that, the 22-year-old revealed how SRH's bowling coach and legendary SA pacer Steyn had predicted his India call-up before IPL 2022.

"When I got selected for India, Dale sir (Steyn) was with me in the team bus. We were going for the match. Everyone congratulated me and Dale sir said, 'I told you before the IPL that you will get the India call-up after the season'. And that's exactly what happened, by the grace of god. My goal is to give my best for Team India now,” Malik said in the video shared by BCCI.

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has lavished praise on head coach Rahul Dravid ahead of the India-South Africa T20Is, which gets underway on June 09. Pathan, who has played under Dravid's captaincy, hailed The Wall for his knack for being crystal clear with his players in terms of what he wants from them.

In this regard, Pathan feels Dravid must have given role clarity to a new-looking Indian squad which is gearing up to face Temba Bavuma-led Proteas in the five-match T20I series at home and must have communicated what he wants from KL Rahul the batter and captain (in regular skipper Rohit Sharma's absence).

Speaking on Star Sports, Irfan said, "It is extremely necessary and the clarity would have been given. I have been saying that since Rahul Dravid has come as a coach, I have played under his captaincy, his biggest thing is the clarity of role.

“It is not that the earlier coaches have not done that, Ravi Shastri was there and Virat Kohli was captaining, but he (Dravid) will take it one step ahead. I have full belief the communication would have happened and KL Rahul would have been told that if he is the captain, it means he is the next in line,” he further added.

KL Rahul would've been told he's next-in-line: Irfan Pathan on Rahul Dravid's communication with India captain

Umran Malik earned his dream maiden call up in India's T20I squad after an exceptional season with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Malik, who is gifted with natural pace, showcased his skills after being backed by the SRH team management and consistently clocked over 150 kmph to trouble the batters.

While he bowled with express pace, a rare commodity in Indian cricket, Umran also worked on his line and length to continue improving throughout the season. The 23-year-old finished as SRH's highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets to his name to be deservingly named in India's squad for the upcoming T20I series against the Proteas.

Ahead of the first ODI between the two sides at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday, India head coach Rahul Dravid spoke about the chances of Umran's potential debut in the South Africa series. Dravid believes Umran is learning and improving but they need to be realistic when it comes to giving the youngster some playing time during the series as he has a big squad at his disposal.

"Obviously, he is learning. He is a young boy and he is getting better, improving. The more he is able to play, the better he is going to get. From our perspective, (we are) very happy to have someone like him in the mix. We have to see how much playing time we can give him, we need to be realistic, we have a large squad, it is not possible to give everyone playing XI time," Dravid said at the pre-match presser in Delhi.

'We need to be realistic': Rahul Dravid on Umran Malik's potential debut for India in South Africa T20I series

Indian cricket team's head coach Rahul Dravid explained why it was important for captain Rohit Sharma to take a break from the team's upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home. Some experts felt Rohit should have continued playing following the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and have led the side in the five T20Is against the Proteas. Rohit has been rested from the T20I series along with other senior players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.

The Indian players will be returning to action for the first time since the conclusion of IPL 2022 on May 29. The members of the squad got a short break in between before assembling in New Delhi for the series-opener at the Arun Jaitely Stadium on Thursday (June 09). In Rohit's absence, KL Rahul will be leading the side against Temba Bavuma's men.

Explaining why it was crucial for Rohit to get a break, Dravid said the Indian skipper is an all-format player and needs to be provided adequate rest to ensure he is fit and fresh for the challenges ahead. The Indian head coach insisted there will be times when the team will have to rest their best players for a particular series to manage their workload.

“Rohit is our all-format player. It would be unwise to expect everyone to be available all the time. We want them to be fit and fresh as well. There would be times where we would have to rest our big players," Dravid responded to a reporter's query on Rohit at the presser on Tuesday.

Rahul Dravid on Dinesh Karthik's comeback:

Veteran wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik managed to make a comeback to the Indian team after a long gap of three years on the back of his performances for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the recently-concluded IPL 2022. Karthik was phenomenal as a finisher for his team and played a number of crucial knocks down the order.

The veteran batter went on to amass 330 runs in 16 matches at an average of 55 and a brilliant strike rate of 183.33 to impress the selectors and make his return to the Indian team. He last featured for India during the ODI World Cup in 2019. When asked about his return, Dravid said Karthik will have a very clear role in the team of finishing games while batting down the order.

"With Dinesh, it is clear with the role. At the backend of the game, he can make a difference. That's why he has been picked, to bat in those positions and deliver for India as well," said Dravid.

Also Read: Not Sachin or Dhoni! Rahul Dravid explains Karthik's role in Team India, justifies skipper Rohit's decision to skip SA series

India are gearing up to take on South Africa in a five-match T20I series at home starting from Thursday (June 09). The first T20I of the series will be played at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in New Delhi. The Indian players are back on national duty after the gruelling season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) which concluded on May 29 last month. The players will be hoping to hit the ground running in the opening game on Thursday.

In the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma and the likes of Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, KL Rahul will be leading the team. While a number of youngsters have made the cut in the squad after an impressive IPL campaign, the likes of Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik are also back.

Star batter Suryakumar Yadav will also miss the series due to an injury and in his absence, the onus will be on Shreyas Iyer to play a key role for the Men in Blue in the top four. Iyer is likely to bat at number three and will be hoping to continue his fine form with the bat in the five-match T20I series.

Iyer will also be aiming to go past Indian skipper Rohit in an elite list of batters. Iyer is just 191 runs away from completing 1,000 runs in T2OIs for India and can become the 3rd fastest batter to achieve the feat after Virat Kohli (29) and KL Rahul (32). Iyer currently has 809 runs in 36 T20Is at an average of 36.77 and a brilliant strike rate of over 140.

A 'one in 15 million' event, as described UK's air traffic control provider NATS, caused the air traffic meltdown last week. The chief of NATS cited a flight plan with two identically named markers as reason for the air-traffic chaos.

On August 28, 1500 flights were cancelled as a result of which thousands of passengers were stranded abroad for days. The disturbance came during one of the busiest travel periods of the summer.

"This was a one in 15 million chance," NATS CEO Martin Rolfe told the BBC.

"We've processed 15 million flight plans with this system up until this point and never seen this before."

A few days ago Rolfe said that the problem would not be repeated.

On Wednesday, NATS published a report that said that the flight plan included two identically named but separate waypoint markers outside UK airspace, which forced the system to enter fail-safe mode.

"In these circumstances, the system could not reject the flight plan without a clear understanding of what possible impact it may have had. Nor could it be allowed through and risk presenting air traffic controllers with incorrect safety-critical information," NATS said.

It said that the flight plan was complying with Eurocontrol's flight planning distribution system.

UK's Civil Aviation Regulator (CAA) has said that it will review circumstances surrounding the failure.

"If there is evidence to suggest NATS may have breached its statutory and licensing obligations we will consider whether any further action is necessary," Rob Bishton, Joint-Interim Chief Executive at the UK's CAA, said in a statement.

This may mean that NATS would end up footing some of the bill for the chaos that ensued last week.

According IATA, the global airline group, the episode is likely to cost airlines up to 100 million pounds ($126 million) as travellers whose flights were cancelled would claim back expenses for the hotels or the tickets.

Britain-based airline easyJet said the NATS report left some questions unanswered. It added that though it welcomed the review, it believed a more wide-ranging examination of resources and IT systems was necessary.

"A full independent and wide-ranging review of NATS is needed to ensure it is fit for purpose today and in the future," easyJet said.

India vs SA, T20Is: 'He'll do very well' - Suresh Raina makes bold prediction for star Indian batter

Dinesh Karthik was phenomenal as a finisher for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The veteran batter, who hasn't played much competitive cricket in the lead up to IPL 2022, shone with the willow and stood up for his team to bail them under pressure while batting in the lower-middle order. Karthik also managed to earn a call up in the Indian team with his sensational performances for RCB.

The 36-year-old wicket-keeper batter enjoyed a stunning season for RCB amassing 330 runs in 16 matches at an average of 55 and a stunning strike rate of 183.33. Karthik will be making his comeback to the Indian team after a gap of three years as he last played for the Men in Blue in the 2019 ODI World Cup in England.

He was dropped from the side following the conclusion of the World Cup and was not able to make his comeback into the national side. However, his splendid touch in IPL 2022 forced the selectors to recall him in India's squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri recently spoke about Karthik's return to the Indian team and explained how the veteran wicket-keeper batter can cement his spot in the side. Shastri believes India needs someone like MS Dhoni, who can finish games for the team in the lower middle-order.

“This is his opportunity. If and when he gets an opportunity in these games, he has to do it with India colours on. We know he has got the experience, so this becomes extremely vital,” Shastri said on Star Sports.

“You have to see from the team’s point of view, what are they looking for? Do they want a keeper who will bat at the top of the order or do they want a keeper who will be the finisher? I will go for the latter. You need a keeper who will do MS Dhoni’s role, let’s put it that way.

“There is already Rishabh Pant who can bat in the top four or five in T20 cricket, but you want someone who can keep and finish a game because there aren’t too many finishers now with MS (Dhoni) having quit. So, I think that’s where his chances are very very good,” the former India head coach added.

India vs SA, T20Is: BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirms no bio-bubble for home series vs Proteas

The BCCI selection committee announced an 18-member Team India T20I squad for the forthcoming five-match series versus South Africa at home. In the KL Rahul-led Indian team, many regulars such as all-format skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested whereas some seniors have missed out while other key players such as Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja are injured.

Shikhar Dhawan was one notable omission in the young squad. While the senior player has been out of the T20I side since being dropped from the squad for the last year's World Cup, many thought a comeback was on the cards for him after amassing 460 runs for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 14 league stage matches. Nonetheless, the selectors preferred youngsters in place of Dhawan as Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, etc. made the cut. As per a report in InsideSport, Dhawan was informed about his non-selection before the team was announced by head coach Rahul Dravid.

“Shikhar has been a great servant of Indian cricket for over a decade. But in T20s, you have to give chances to youngsters who have been doing well. Rahul had to make the tough call and we all agreed. Shikhar was informed by Rahul before the team was announced on Sunday,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by InsideSport.

India vs SA T20Is: Shikhar Dhawan was informed about his omission by coach Rahul Dravid - Report

Virat Kohli entered IPL 2022 after being free from captaincy responsibilities altogether. While he had relinquished Team India's captaincy in the shortest format and also stepped down as Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) skipper post last year's season, he was sacked as India's ODI skipper and he also resigned as the Test captain.

Thus, many thought he would go all-out in the 15th season of the IPL, being held in India. Nonetheless, he ended the league stage with only 309 runs at a strike rate of 117.93 along with two fifties. While he can still turn the tides in the playoffs, after having played his best knock in RCB's last league stage outing, many are concerned about Kohli's form in a T20 World Cup year for the Men in Blue.

However, former Indian spinner-turned-commentator Murali Karthik has backed Kohli to remain in India's T20I scheme of things as he can deliver at any time.

"You can't keep such players out of the squad for tournaments like the T20 World Cup because they have earned the right to be there for what they are and what they can do at the end moment," Kartik said on 'CricChat Season 2' on ShareChat Audio Chatrooms.

After returning with a match-winning 54-ball 73 in RCB's eight-wicket win over table-toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) in their final group stage fixture, Faf du Plessis-led Bengaluru will now play the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Eliminator and hope for some consistency from Kohli in the fag end of the IPL 2022 edition.

Kohli has been rested for India's upcoming five T20Is versus South Africa, at home, from starting June. Thus, he will take some time off before going all-out for India in an important calendar year, comprising the T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November.

'You can't keep such players....' - Former India spinner backs Virat Kohli amid batting concerns

On Sunday (May 22), the BCCI selection committee released an 18-member Team India squad for their upcoming five-match T20I series versus South Africa, which is set to be held in India from June 09. While regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested, KL Rahul has been given the task to lead the side comprising some young and veteran cricketers.

While some uncapped players such as Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh have been rewarded following their performances in IPL 2022, Ishan Kishan managed to hold onto his place despite an ordinary run in the 15th season for the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI). Being the most expensive player in this year's mega auction, the 23-year-old Ishan ended the 15th edition with 418 runs at a strike rate of 120.11 in 14 matches. He wasn't at his consistent best and surely felt the pressure of a heavy price tag.

Thus, many raised concerns about seeing Ishan's name in the 18-man squad, however, former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has backed the selection of the MI and India opener. He cited examples of Rohit and Virat's ordinary runs with the bat in the ongoing season and defended Ishan. For the unversed, Rohit ended with not even a single half-century whereas Kohli too struggled for runs but has managed two half-centuries in 14 games with his IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) still alive in the competition with a hard-earned playoffs ticket.

Even Rohit, Virat haven't scored runs: Former Pak captain defends Ishan Kishan's selection for SA T20Is

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced Team India's squad for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa at home. India will take on South Africa in a five-match T20I series starting on June 09 after the conclusion of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

While senior players like Virat Kohli, captain Rohit Sharma and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah were rested from the T20I series, several youngsters also made the cut in the squad owing to their impressive performances in IPL 2022. Young pacers Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh were handed their maiden call ups for the T20I series.

Among the biggest talking points from the squad announcement was the return of Dinesh Karthik to the Indian squad after a gap of three years. Karthik last featured for India during the 2019 ODI World Cup in England and has managed to make his comeback to the team owing to his finishing exploits for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2022.

Besides Karthik, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya also made his comeback after a long layoff while the likes of Ishan Kishan and Venkatesh Iyer were selected despite average performances from the duo this season. The likes of Sanju Samson, Rahul Tripathi and Shikhar Dhawan were among the notable exclusions from the squad.

Former India batter Suresh Raina questioned Dhawan's absence from the squad despite the veteran batter's prolific run in the ongoing season. Dhawan finished as the highest run-getter for Punjab Kings this season amassing 460 runs in 14 games at an average of 38.33 and a strike rate of over 122.

Raina believes Dhawan also deserved a spot in India's T20I squad if Karthik was picked after his performances this season. The former India batter said Dhawan must be sad over his non-selection as he has been scoring runs consistently for the last few seasons.

"Obviously, Shikhar would have been disappointed. Every captain wants a player like him in the team. He is fun loving person who brightens up the environment. And he has always scored runs - be it domestic, international or T20," Raina said on Star Sports.

"If you've brought Dinesh Karthik back in the team, Shikhar Dhawan deserved a place too. He has performed runs the last 3-4 years and has scored runs non-stop. Somewhere deep down, he must be sad," he added.

Dhawan had lost his opening slot to KL Rahul in both ODIs and T20Is before the emergence of the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan ensured he didn't get a chance to make his comeback in the team despite his purple patch in the IPL. Kishan, Rahul and Gaikwad are the three openers India have selected for the T20I series against South Africa.
