Gavaskar recalled Shastri's famous words after the defeat in Adelaide to&nbsp;Star Sports&nbsp;and said, "It obviously has got to be the way India bounced back earlier this year after being dismissed for 36 (in Adelaide Pink Ball Test). Because when something like that happens, the team tends to lose belief in itself, there is a sense of disappointment and there is a sense of giving up.

"And that is where Shastri played a huge role because from what I've read, is that he said that 'you wear this 36 like a badge'. And then Ajinkya Rahane, the way he led the side in the three Tests, and of course everyone stepped up. We played almost like an A team, not even the regular team. But every player who played in that, every replaced player came in and did well. And that is again tells you the kind of influence and input that Ravi Shastri had on the younger players and the fringe players who are waiting for their opportunities," added the Little Master.

Cheteshwar Pujara hasn't scored an international ton since early 2019. While the right-hander continues to be an integral part of India's Test line-up and has played some important knocks in the recent past, a three-figure knock continues to evade the red-ball specialist.&nbsp;

On Day 1 of the first Test between India and South Africa, in Centurion, Pujara came out to bat with India off to a fine start courtesy openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. Coming out to bat with India 117/1 after winning the toss, Pujara was expected to take the scoreboard forward and bat throughout the day; tiring the bowlers. However, he fell for a golden duck.

Pujara tried to negate a Lungi Ngidi delivery but got an inside edge and was caught by the short-leg fielder as he walked back to the pavillion for a golden duck. Thus, the right-hander felt dejected as his run of form remains below his own standards. Nonetheless, head coach Rahul Dravid came to his rescue and lifted his spirits in the dressing room.

Rahul and Mayank Agarwal (60) drew the sting from the South African attack with an opening stand of 117 before fast bowler Lungi Ngidi dismissed Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara off successive deliveries.

It was only a temporary setback for the tourists, however as Rahul shared a third wicket partnership of 82 with Kohli (35) before he and Ajinkya Rahane added an unbeaten 73 for the fourth wicket.

Rahul provided a masterpiece of concentration and shot selection, marred only by a difficult chance to long leg off Wiaan Mulder when he was on 60. He faced 248 balls and hit 17 fours and a six.

Rahane, whose place in the team had been questioned after a run of poor form, struck the ball crisply in making an unbeaten 40 off 81 balls with eight fours.

Ngidi was the only successful bowler, taking three for 45.

Kohli said at the toss that India's win against South Africa in the third Test in Johannesburg on their previous tour in 2017/18 had given them the confidence of knowing they could win away from home.

Although they lost that series 2-1, India went on to achieve victories in Australia and England, leaving South Africa as the only major cricket-playing nation where they have not yet triumphed.

Proteas fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the Test series owing to a persistent injury. And there would be pain all over the place.&nbsp;

"So you needed to make adjustments. When the knee pain got excruciating, the next ball I would probably jump less. When I jumped less, obviously the force needs to be produced through the core and the back and the shoulders, so the pubalgia would act up. So the third ball I would be extra side-on to try to use the hips.
