As the Biden administration clamours on the imminent Russian invasion of Ukraine, the United States has said that it expects India to side with the West if Kremlin goes ahead it with its alleged insurrection plan.

Even though Russia has said that it is drawing down troops near its neighbour’s borders, US has viewed the claims with scepticism.

America claimed that Russia has added 7,000 more troops near the Ukraine borders in recent days, with Biden saying that the possibility of Russian invasion remains “very high”.

While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that there was a discussion on Russia and Ukraine during the recently concluded Quad ministerial in Melbourne that saw the participation of foreign ministers from Australia, India, Japan and the US.

India, the world's largest democracy and second most populous nation had a huge challenge when Covid pandemic hit its shores. The sheer size and complexities within the country made it quite a task to battle the disease. There was no medicine, no vaccine available during initial months. Priyam Gandhi-Mody, in her book 'A Nation to Protect: Leading India through the Covid crisis', has described how India battled and emerged from the deadly crisis under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Efforts of all Indians created a compounding effect under a strong leadership that made tackling the pandemic possible.

The launch of 'A Nation to Protect' took place on February 18 at Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in New Delhi. The book was launched by Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare along with Professor Shamika Ravi (Economist) and Dr VK Paul (member of NITI Aayog).

What followed was a discussion moderated by Sudhir Chaudhary, Editor In Chief of WION. The discussion saw Priyam Gandhi-Mody and the eminent panel discuss aspects of India's fight against the pandemic.

"I was able look at the situation in top-down manner," said Priyam Gandhi-Mody as she talked about her book. When asked about her approach she said that she attempted to capture the Indian response to the pandemic from an outsider's perspective.

In her opening remarks, Gandhi-Mody noted that doomsday predictions were made about India worldover.

"It was said that because of India, global Covid response would take a hit," she said. She expressed displeasure at 'political partisanship' that was observed in Indian political arena just when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was leading the country out of the grips of the pandemic.

Sudhir Chaudhary noted that a section of media was trying to cash in on the frenzy to target the establishment.

"Do you think they did a disservice to the nation through their coverage?" asked Chaudhary.

"It is often said that 'sadness is sexy'. But how sexy is it if you are going to do it at the expense of your country?" replied Gandhi-Mody. "A section of political leaders and media made this into 'us versus them' battle"

Union minister Mansukh Mandaviya said he believed that 'A Nation to Protect' describes the reality as it unfolded during last two years.

"We have seen what happens when there is a true leadership with a vision," said Mandaviya referring to PM Modi.

"So do you think Covid is man-made?" Sudhir Chaudhary asked Priyam Gandhi-Mody towards the end of the session. She said that she would like more information to come out.

India's crude oil imports in January slipped from one-year highs hit in the previous month, though fuel demand is expected to recover as several states ease coronavirus restrictions after a decline in cases.

It's impossible to ignore the impact of the Omicron variant of coronavirus and that along with high oil prices hampered fuel demand in January, said Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at OANDA.

On January 31, India abstained from the United Nations Security Council vote on Ukraine.

Ten states, namely the US, UK, France, UAE, Ghana, Albania, Norway, Brazil, Mexico and Ireland, voted in favour of taking up the Ukraine issue.

On the other hand, only Russia and China voted against it. Whereas three member states —India, Gabon and Kenya skipped.

Giving reasons, India’s permanent representative to UNSC, TS Tirumurti said, “India's interest is in finding a solution that can provide for immediate de-escalation of tensions taking into account the legitimate security interests of all countries and aimed towards securing long term peace and stability in the region and beyond. We have also been in touch with all concerned parties. It is our considered view that the issue can only be resolved through diplomatic dialogue.”

The abstention is being viewed as a repeat of 2014, when in the aftermath of Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, India abstained from a resolution backed by Ukraine, the US and the EU that sought to condemn Kremlin's actions in the General Assembly vote in March, 2014.

Many analysts, especially from the West, at that time and even now termed India as a “fence-sitter”, meaning India is not committed to the issue.

However, India’s move was rather well-calculated and thought-out. It was actually engaging “both sides of the fence”, trying to balance its ties with Moscow and Washington.

For India, the Ukraine crisis is one of the biggest foreign policy issues, potential to have massive ramifications politically and economically.

There are probably three reasons why.

Military equations

Moscow makes up about half of India’s total weapons import. India needs Russia to service its arms, and also for joint products, like the Brahmos missile.

Hence, abandoning Russia is not an option for New Delhi. And at the same time, siding with Russia could incur American sanctions, i.e., CAATSA (The Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act).

The Biden administration is in the process of making a decision on whether to sanction India for its purchase of the S-400 Russian missile systems or to process a waiver, considering the close India-US defence ties.

If New Delhi openly sides with Russia, then Biden may reconsider imposing sanctions.

China factor

In recent years, China has become the biggest threat for India—openly acknowledged by Indian Army chief MM Naravane.

Hence, India needs both Russia and US to counter China.

America is China’s rival while Russia is an ally. One brings deterrence, whereas the other brings leverage.

Russia could be effective in tempering China’s aggression and America, on the other hand, will undermine its designs.

So, it’s a win-win for India. But that advantage disappears if India picks a side.

Economic fallout

The India-Russia bilateral trade is worth $8 billion, while the India-Ukraine trade is worth around only $2.7 billion.

If a war breaks out, supply chains are going to be disruptive. And the one product that will worry India is oil, both as a fuel and cooking oil.

Last year, India bought 1.8 million tonnes of sunflower oil and 74 per cent of that came from Ukraine. So, if a war breaks out cooking oil may become more expensive.

India is already preparing for this eventuality and new markets are being explored, like Brazil and Argentina.

Then comes the petroleum. Brent crude has already breached the 90$-mark, which the possibility to reach even the $100-mark.

Russia makes up around 20 per cent of the global supply of natural gas. If Ukraine is attacked, the prices of natural gas is going to skyrocket

And this could disrupt India’s energy plans. So, India has a lot at stake in this conflict.

India: Army teams mobilised to rescue trekker stuck in crevice for 30 hours

China on Wednesday lambasted against the upcoming Quad Foreign Ministers' meeting on Friday and accused the members, including India and US, of creating a bloc confrontation and having a “cold war mentality.”

In a media briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the four-nation alliance should stop driving wedges between regional countries.

"We oppose exclusive blocs to create bloc confrontation,” Lijian said while answering a question on the Foreign Ministers' meeting of the Quad.

"We hope that the US and relevant countries can get a clear picture of the situation, feel relaxed, abandon the Cold War mentality, stop driving wedges between regional countries and contribute to regional peace, stability and prosperity,” he said.

The Quad came into being in November 2017, when the US, Australia, India and Japan gave shape to the long-pending proposal of setting up the Quad to develop a new strategy to keep the critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific free of any influence, amidst China's growing military presence in the strategic region.

The foreign ministers from the four countries will be participating in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue in Melbourne on Friday.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that it will be an opportunity for the ministers to follow up on their virtual meeting held in February last year and exchange views on regional strategic issues given their shared vision of a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

The Quad meeting comes amid heightened tension over Russia’s military buildup on the Ukrainian border.

The four countries are expected to reaffirm the importance of the rules-based order and discuss the challenges posed to it by China, said Daniel Kritenbrink, the assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs while speaking to reporters in Washington on February 4.

He also said the Ukraine situation, in which it is feared Russia will further invade its neighbouring country, could be a topic to be dealt with in the Quad context, given that the four countries are key democracies in the Indo-Pacific and the issue involves a threat to the rules-based global order.

“In this era of intense competition, changing strategic landscapes, economic coercion and, of course, this very difficult global pandemic, there is no greater global partnership than what we’re trying to accomplish through the Quad,” the official said.

The last Quad foreign ministerial meeting held in person was in October 2020 in Japan. The leaders of the Quad met at the White House in September last year, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is planning to host the next summit in his country in the spring.

Indian officials have held heated discussions with Google, Twitter and Facebook for not proactively removing what they described as fake news on their platforms, sources told Reuters, the government's latest altercation with Big Tech.

The officials, from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B), strongly criticised the companies and said their inaction on fake news was forcing the Indian government to order content takedowns, which in turn drew international criticism that authorities were suppressing free expression, two sources said.

The sources, who were familiar with the proceedings at the virtual meeting on Monday, described the conversation as tense and heated, signalling a new low in ties between American tech giants and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration.

The officials did not issue an ultimatum to the companies at the meeting, the sources said. The government has been tightening tech sector regulations, but wants companies to do more on content moderation.

The meeting was a follow-up to the I&B ministry's use of "emergency powers" in December and January to order the blocking of 55 channels on Google's YouTube platform, and some Twitter and Facebook account.

The government had said the channels were promoting "fake news" or "anti-India" content and that the disinformation was being spread by accounts based in neighbouring Pakistan.

The I&B ministry did not respond to a request for comment on the meeting, which was also attended by Indian content-sharing platforms ShareChat and Koo, which have millions of users in the country.

The idea was summarily rejected by the government officials, who said the takedowns also publicise how the companies weren't doing enough to tackle fake news on their own, the person said.

Indian officials have held heated discussions with Google, Twitter and Facebook for not proactively removing what they described as fake news on their platforms, sources told Reuters, the government's latest altercation with Big Tech.

Though China did not reveal the number of casualties in the Galwan fight, it did award posthumous medals to four soldiers who died in the combat, according to the article. However, only four names were published, while the total number of losses was up to 38.

The Klaxon assembled an independent team of social media researchers for this inquiry, who discovered that China's casualties went much beyond the four soldiers named by Beijing.

China suffered a huge loss in the Galwan Valley clash, ‘fabricated’ stories to the world: Australian newspaper

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up to launch its third Lunar exploration mission Chandrayaan-3. The mission will be launched in August 2022. India's Minister of State for Science and Technology told this to the Indian Parliament in a written reply. He was responding to a question about the status of the mission.

He said that realisation of Chandrayaan-3 is in progress based on analysis of learnings from Chandrayaan-2 mission.

"Many related hardware and their special tests are successfully completed, the Launch is scheduled for August 2022" he added.

Following a lull in launch activity during two years of the pandemic, India has now planned for 19 missions in calendar year of 2022. The minister said that these would include eight launch vehicle missions, seven spacecraft (satellite) missions and four technology demonstration missions.

Notably, in a recent webinar, DR AS Kiran Kumar, former chairman of ISRO had explained that Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 and is meant to demonstrate lunar landing and roving capability. He said that the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft would consist of a lander and rover carried on a propulsion module. He also added that the factors that led to unsuccessful Lunar landing of the Chandrayaan-2 lander were being taken care of in the latest mission.

About scientific payloads that are being carried on-board the lander and rover, he said, "The payloads on lander are Langmuir probe, Chandra's Surface Thermo Physical Experiment (ChaSTE) and Instrument for Lunar seismic activity (ILSA). The rover payloads are Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) and Laser Induced Breakdown spectroscope (LIBS)."

The former Chairman also elaborated that the Chandrayaan-3 lander is planned to perform an in-situ ChaSTE experiment of surface and sub-surface measurements of temperature.

It is meant to help understand the thermal exchange and physical properties of the uppermost Lunar soil. A thermal probe of 10cm length would be deployed on the Lunar surface to perform the experiment. On the uniqueness of the mission, he said that it was the only instrument in contact with Lunar surface/ subsurface and that is was the first-ever in-situ thermal measurement of the Lunar High Altitude region.

India's Lunar exploration journey began with a maiden mission Chandrayaan-1 in 2008 and a second mission in 2019. While the 2008 mission was a success, the 2019 mission Chandrayaan-2 failed to land successfully on the Lunar surface. As of today, only an orbiter from this mission continues to circle the moon and is expected to perform remote sensing and mapping operations and relay the data back to earth for the next few years. However, the lander and the rover it contained perished on impact with the lunar surface, after the crash landing.

Around 2024-25, India and Japan are expected to launch a joint Lunar mission dubbed as 'LUPEX' or Lunar Polar Exploration Mission. This probe is meant to land at the Lunar South pole with a rover that weighs upto 350kg.

This rover is expected to carry science experiments made by Indian and Japanese teams and conduct in-situ sample analysis. This mission is expected to have a life of upto 6 months. The details regarding this mission that is in the planning stage were revealed by Dr Kiran Kumar, in the webinar.

India's third Lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 slated for August 2022 launch

Myanmar's Ambassador to India Moe Kyaw Aung has confirmed that they have handed over five Indian insurgents to the Indian government in December last year and reaffirmed that his country will “never allow any insurgents to use its soil to engage in any hostile activities” against New Delhi.

Speaking to WION's Sidhant Sibal exclusively, envoy Aung, in a rare interview, said, “Myanmar and India have been traditionally enjoying a close friendship and amity based on mutual respect."

The relations between India and Myanmar have grown close over the years. Both countries had agreed to implement and operationalise connectivity projects like Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project, Trilateral Highway and operationalisation of the Sittwe Port.

Last year, Indian foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla visited Myanmar to hand over more medical supplies, including Covid vaccines.

In fact, Myanmar has been one of the first recipient countries to receive India-made vaccines in January 2021 when New Delhi began exporting.

The envoy highlighted, “Myanmar has received a total of 15 million doses of Covisheld vaccines purchased from Serum Institute of India (SII) and completed the deal already last year".

WION: How do you see India-Myanmar ties? And what kind of engagement has been happening in the last one year, since the Indian Foreign secretary’s visit. One of the key focuses has been on connectivity. What is the latest development? And have Kaladan Multi-Modal project, Sittwe Port, been operationalised?

Moe Kyaw Aung: Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Myanmar and India on 4 January 1948, Myanmar and India have been enjoying traditionally close friendship and amity based on mutual respect, mutual understanding, and time-tested friendly relations under the regional and multilateral frameworks.

Myanmar’s independent, active and non-aligned foreign policy and India’s Act East Policy coupled with its ‘neighbourhood first’ policy contribute to forging closer cooperation between the two countries.

For India, Myanmar is not only the gateway to the ASEAN region, but also the only state adjoining India with both land and maritime boundaries. Successive governments of both countries have maintained close and friendly relations in line with the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence.

In the last one year, there have been many engagements and cooperation in different sectors such as defence, energy and power, connectivity, trade, health and education, etc. Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and officials from the Ministry of External Affairs were on a working visit to Myanmar from December 22 to 23.

The chairman of the State Administration Council, Prime Minister, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing received the top official. Connectivity is one of the focuses in the discussion. Singla expressed India's continued support for people-centric socioeconomic developmental projects, as well as their commitment for expeditious implementation of ongoing connectivity initiatives such as the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project and the Trilateral Highway.

The operationalisation of Sittwe Port is underway. Myanmar’s Ministry of Construction is undertaking necessary steps for the construction work starting from 109.2 Km (Myanmar – India border) to southwards of Myanmar. The project will contribute to the promotion of trade and connectivity between the two countries by shortening the distance from Kolkata to Sittwe by approximately 1,328 kilometres.

WION: Covid has been another issue. India recently sent vaccines. Have you requested more? What is the situation in your country?

Moe Kyaw Aung: Apart from the initial donation of 1.5 million doses of Covishield and 2 lakhs doses of Covaxin in the first quarter of 2021, the Indian government has donated additional 1 million doses of Covishield to Myanmar on October 9, 2021.

Myanmar is one of a few countries which received vaccines once the Indian government lifted the restriction on exports of the Covid-19 vaccine. Also, Shringla handed over 1 million Covaxin jabs to the Myanmar Red Cross Society during his visit in December 2021.

Myanmar has received a total of 15 million doses of Covisheld vaccines purchased from the Serum Institute of India (SII) and completed the deal already last year.

Likewise, during the second wave of Covid pandemic faced by India, the State Administration Council donated a total of 8.85 tons of relief materials, including 500,000 surgical masks, 20,000 goggles, 50,000 face shields, 100,000 pairs of examination gloves, 100 5L oxygen concentrators and 20 power air-purifying respirator system to India on May 18, 2021.

Myanmar’s Ministry of Health received a total of 46.1 million of COVID-19 vaccines purchased from abroad and a total of 16.4 million doses as donations, totalling to 62.5 million doses.

COVID-19 vaccines are being given daily to people as per the targeted groups of 18 years and above. Apart from the targeted group of 18 years and above, students aged 12 years and above and displaced persons are also being vaccinated over the targeted scheduled plan since January 2022.

The health workers and people in need are also getting booster doses. As of January 25, 21.8 million people have been vaccinated against. About 18.4 million people have received two doses of the vaccine and 3.4 million people have received the first dose. Around 40.25 million people have been inoculated against COVID-19 in Myanmar.

The figure of Omicron cases has risen to 283 in total in Myanmar till January 29, 2022. Myanmar’s Covid situation is still controllable at this moment. However, I assume that Myanmar will further cooperate with the Indian government and India’s pharmaceutical companies for further vaccine supplies.

WION: Security has been another key issue. We know that India's northeastern states faced a number of attacks, and India and Myanmar have had a long-standing security cooperation. What has been the stance of Myanmar on India's concerns over the insurgent groups

Moe Kyaw Aung: Geographically, Myanmar shares a long land border of over 1,600 km with India. It connects four northeastern states of India: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. It also shares a maritime boundary through the Bay of Bengal. In this regard, cooperation in the security and defence sector of both countries has strengthened over the years.

Myanmar has reaffirmed our firm commitment to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India. Myanmar has clearly reiterated that it will never allow any insurgents and negative elements to use its soil to engage in any hostile activities against its neighbouring country. Myanmar also appreciates India’s stance to uphold the same principle. Myanmar and India are on the same page as both agree that terrorism constitutes a significant threat to peace and stability in the region and should be confronted in all its forms and manifestations.

Both countries share the view that it is important to maintain security and stability along the India-Myanmar borders, which is essential for the socio-economic development of people living in the border areas. The Myanmar Armed Forces handed over a group of 22 Indian insurgents to the Government of India on May 15, 2020, and additional 5 Indian insurgents on December 15, 2021. They were linked to insurgent groups in Manipur, namely, the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), the People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK-Pro), Kanglei Yawol Kunna Lup (KYKL) and the People’s Liberation Army of Manipur (PLA), the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB-S) 5 and the Kamtapur Liberation Organization (KLO). This reflected the deepening ties between the two armed forces of Myanmar and India.

WION: How has been Myanmar's engagement with other neighbours, especially China.

Moe Kyaw Aung: In line with the 2008 Constitution, Myanmar practices independent, active and non-aligned foreign policy and shall not commence aggression against any nation. No foreign troops shall be permitted to be deployed in the territory. The five principles of peaceful co-existence— which Myanmar, India and China initiated in 1954—still act as fundamental principles for Myanmar in its relations with its giant neighbours, both India and China. Myanmar has been cooperating with both countries in the spirit of good neighbourliness and time-tested friendly relations under the regional and multilateral frameworks.

What has been the stance of Myanmar on India's concerns over the insurgent groups Moe Kyaw Aung: Geographically, Myanmar shares a long land border of over 1,600 km with India.

Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba has said Ukraine saw space for the Indian role to defuse the ongoing crisis in Eastern Europe. He said that "it will make an impact". India has a close relationship with Russia and US and both countries have kept New Delhi in loop amid the unfolding situation in Eastern Europe.

At a virtual press conference on Wednesday, foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba, in response to WION's question, said India can tell in "a very clear manner to Russia, the following, that Ukraine is a friend and a partner of India and India will find any attempt of Russia to solve the current crisis by military means or to continue to destabilize Ukraine from inside unacceptable. If Russia hears that from Indian govt, it will be a very strong message of support and it will make an impact"

The comments came even as India called for peaceful resolution of the situation through sustained diplomatic efforts. India, along with Gabon and Kenya had abstained from a UNSC procedural vote calling for discussion on the issue on Monday. US had led the initiative on the issue at the UNSC, which Moscow called as "megaphone diplomacy". Russia wants "security guarantees" from the West that Ukraine doesn't join NATO.

Asked about the Indian students in Ukraine in light of the escalating situation, FM Kuleba said, "When it comes to Indian students in Ukraine, firstly happy to receive all your compatriots they are great people and they study all across the country."

"We really appreciate their presence and contribution to life in Ukraine".

He pointed out, "I can tell them one thing, there are many many much more complicated and dangerous places across the world compared to Ukraine. They can feel safe, continue their studies and enjoy their life and be confident in the future. "

There are about 20,000 Indian students studying in Ukraine, mainly in the field of medicine. Indian business professionals work predominantly in the fields of pharmaceuticals, IT, engineering, medicine, education, etc.

‘India Club’ founded by Indian expats in 2001, actively engages the Indian diaspora in Ukraine.

The Indian mission recently started collecting data and details of Indians in the country in view of the ongoing situation and prepare for any eventuality.

India's message to Russia will make impact, says Ukraine foreign minister

It was 30 years ago that India and Israel established full diplomatic ties.

Since the upgradation of relations in 1992, defence and agriculture formed the two main pillars of the bilateral engagement between India and Israel.

In recent years, the relations have seen rapid growth across a broad spectrum of areas and the future vision of the cooperation is of a strong hi-tech partnership as befits two knowledge economies.

Notably, in 2017, the relationship was upgraded to a strategic level when Narendra Modi undertook the historic first-ever visit by an Indian PM to Israel.

Speaking to WION exclusively, the Indian Ambassador to Israel, Sanjeev Kumar Singla, underscored some of the key achievements between the two countries over the past three decades.

WION: India and Israel are celebrating 30 years of full diplomatic ties…what do you see as the key achievements between the two countries over the past 3 decades?

Singla: There are two specific achievements: Political and economic. Earlier, the ties were underplayed. But today, that's a thing of the past. The PM’s historic visit marked a turning point four and a half years ago.

Today, we have a strategic partnership. The relationship is on a completely different trajectory.

In the economic domain, we tried to lay the foundation for partnership, especially in agriculture, three decades ago. Today, we can build on that on a much greater scale.

WION: People often talk of shared values between the two countries – and practically every Israeli family knows someone who’s spent time in India. What do you think it is that unites Israelis and Indians, apart from a love of Indian food?

Singla: It's a question which has fascinated a lot of people. When our External Affairs Minister (S Jaishankar) was here 3-4 months back, PM Bennet asked him the same.

For Israelis, India offers that rare space where there hasn't been any anti-semitism. They have not only contributed and thrived but there has been a shared empathy for the growth of Israel

WION: As well as shared values, unfortunately, the two countries also share similar challenges. I’m particularly thinking about counter-terrorism. What can India and Israel learn from each other in this respect?

Singla: The most important lesson is the ability to work together at an operational level. That flows when you share a common outlook of zero tolerance of terrorism.

During the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, some Israelis were targeted and that's something which we must never let happen again. It's a universal menace which both countries must fight together.

WION: India and Israel have signed a number of cooperation agreements. What more can we expect going forwards over the coming years?

Singla: Agreements are facilitators to nudge things forward. In short term, we are looking to conclude our FTA, hopefully by the mid of this year.

WION: The Quad - which India, Israel, the US and UAE launched during Minister Jaishankar’s visit to Israel in 2021 – has the potential to take innovation and trade to a new level globally. What’s being planned for the Quad over the coming year?

Singla: It is still early days for Quad. Immediate idea is to identify infra projects and then involve the private sector to execute them.

We are looking forward to an in-person Quad in the next few weeks, possibly in March in Dubai where more activities and specific goals would be discussed.

WION: Finally, what do you envisage for relations between India and Israel in 30 years’ time – what’s the long-term vision?

Singla: Long term vision is to take the ties much more organic, especially in the areas of trade, tech, innovation collaboration. The idea is to take the relations to a point where the government does not have to act as a catalyst any longer.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), such as dengue, lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, and leishmaniasis, are called "neglected," because they generally afflict the world's poor and historically have not received as much attention as other diseases.

NTDs are found in several countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. NTDs are especially common in tropical areas where people do not have access to clean water or safe ways to dispose of human waste.

India joins other countries to observe World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day

Every year on January 30, India observes ‘Shaheed Diwas’ or ‘Martyr’s Day’. The day marks the death anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, or Mahatma Gandhi.

On this day, India pays homage to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives to secure freedom for India from the oppressive British regime.

Why is Martyr’s Day is observed on January 30?

Mahatma Gandhi is regarded as the Father of the Nation. He led India’s struggle for freedom and is revered by everyone for his non-violent approach against the British Raj.

However, there were many who opposed Gandhi's ideas, and blamed him for the partition of India.

On January 30, 1948, just five months after India gained independence, Gandhi was shot three times at point-blank range during a prayer meeting at Birla House compound in New Delhi. He was 78.

He was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. Gandhi died at the spot.

Since then, India observes that day as ‘Martyr’s Day’ to mourn the loss of its greatest freedom fighter.

How is ‘Martyr’s Day’ celebrated?

Every year on this day, the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Defence Minister, and the three Service Chiefs —Army, Air Force, and Navy—pay tribute at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial at Raj Ghat in Delhi.

As per the government’s directions, two minutes of silence is observed in states and UTs on January 30 in the memory of martyred freedom fighters.

People across India observe seven Martyr's Day in a year. The day is celebrated to honour the martyrs of the nation.

The seven days are: January 30, March 23, May 19, October 21, November 17, November 19, and November 24.

What does Gandhi represent?

Gandhi is the symbol of non-violence. Many world leaders regard him as their inspiration.

Martin Luther King Jr, the African-American civil rights movement leader, Nelson Mandela, the great leader of the South African people, Dalai Lama and Albert Einstein, among many, revere Gandhi.

Gandhi's philosophy is based on three principles: non-violence, the fight for truth (satyagraha) and individual and political freedom (swaraj).

In his fight for peace, he sought advice from the teachings of Buddha and the Prophet Mohammed.

Gandhi believed that pure faith could unite people of different religions. “I can see that in the midst of death, life persists. In the midst of untruth, truth persists. In the midst of darkness, light persists. Hence, I gather that God is life, truth, light. He is love. He is the supreme good.”

India helps Afghanistan by sending 4th batch of medical assistance

It took more than two decades for India and Sri Lanka to finalise the deal to build Trincomalee oil farm tanks, a move expected to boost energy security for both countries and set the stage for further economic cooperation.

The Trincomalee oil farm consisting of 100 oil storage tanks involves three agreements.

The first agreement pertains to modernising 61 British-era tanks, where the Indian Oil Corporation will hold a minority stake of 49 per cent while the rest is with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) which will also operate the remaining tanks.

The lease will be valid for 50 years.

India had for long wanted to secure the Trincomalee farm tanks as it was averse to a foreign company operating them in their backyard.

Talks were being held since 1987, but the major breakthrough emerged when Sri Lanka found itself in the midst of an economic crisis this year.

Talking exclusively to WION, Sri Lanka’s energy minister Udaya Gammanpila revealed why it took both countries so long to conclude the deal.

“Well, India wanted to have all 99 tanks in their control and then sublease to Sri Lankan entities who want to use these tanks. So when I became the minister, I realised that India's interest is not commercial but it’s a security concern. This oil tank farm has 100 tanks with a capacity of 10,000 metric tons each, 8 million barrels of oil can be stored in this oil tank farm. If an enemy of India takes control of these tanks, the enemy can attack India without any uninterrupted break because of the unlimited fuel supply on their ships, planes and submarines. So, this is India’s worry that they don't want to develop this,” he said.

“This is my own assessment — If they (India) could bomb and destroy this, their problem is over. I realised this and I agreed with them that we will not allow a third party to involve in the development of these tanks without the Indian consent. That's what they exactly wanted,” he said.

Gammanpila said that they had to change the proposals to include India’s concerns.

“So, I changed the frame, and our counter-proposal was accepted by India. It was a tough negotiation. We had 22 rounds of negotiations during the period of 16 months. There were heated exchanges and somehow, in the end, we have reached a consensus and the entire oil tank farm will now be used for the first time since the second world war,” he said.

The minister also discussed at length the electricity crisis currently plaguing the island nation.

The energy minister acknowledged that the government was unable to match the rising demand and failed to develop thermal and renewable energy resources.

“Usually, from Jan to April, dry season takes place in Sri Lanka and our water level goes down drastically. At that time, we usually rely on thermal plants, but unfortunately, since we didn’t add either renewable energy or thermal energy during the last 8 years, there weren’t sufficient supplies to cater to the increasing demand. I have predicted that there will be power cuts probably from mid-February,” Gammanpila said.

With power production coming down, Sri Lanka was looking to increase the operations of existing thermal power plants, but the foreign reserve crisis prevented the country from purchasing diesel and furnace oil.

“We need US $500 million to meet the energy requirements of the country. This is something we can't bear because we are in a foreign currency crisis. That's why we are facing this difficulty,” he said.

Sri Lanka has foreign debt obligations exceeding $7 billion in 2022, including repayment of another bond worth $1 billion in July.

Shortages of cash have hindered imports of essentials and raw materials for manufacturing, and shortages have worsened inflation, which surged to 12.1% in December from 9.9% in November.

'India's ideas are changing': PM Modi applauds the fact that more girls are joining NCC

As part of the outcome of the first India-Central Asia summit on Thursday, both sides have announced to establish joint working group on the use of Chabahar port and on Afghanistan issue.

The five Central Asian countries— Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan—and India have been closely following the Afghanistan crisis.

During the virtual summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said, “We all have the same concerns and objectives for regional security. We are all concerned about the developments in Afghanistan. In this context also, our mutual cooperation has become even more important for regional security and stability.”

The joint working group on Afghanistan will be formed at the senior officials’ level.

Notably, the latest development comes ahead of the Shanghai Corporation Organisation (SCO) conference that will be hosted by Uzbekistan in July this year to discuss the Afghanistan crisis.

Three Central Asian countries—Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan—share a land border with Afghanistan and are worried over the spillover effects from the Taliban takeover.

During the one-and-half-hour-long virtual summit, Afghanistan was discussed in detail with the leaders reaffirming the importance of UNSC Resolution 2593 that was adopted in 2021.

The resolution on Afghanistan was passed last year under the Indian presidency of the security council which says that Afghan territory should not be used to shelter terrorists and calls for the formation of an inclusive government.

Chabahar Port has been a key part of India's foreign policy to facilitate trade between India and Central Asia.

During his address, the PM highlighted, "Central Asia is central to India’s vision of an integrated and stable extended neighbourhood and as part of a roadmap will adopt integrated approach for regional connectivity and cooperation for the next 30 years."

There are plans are to include the Chabahar Port under the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) that connects Mumbai to Moscow.

Many of these Central Asian countries are landlocked and view the INSTC as a key project to bolster trading activities.

Other key outcomes of the summit includes conducting the summit every two years, the establishment of India-Central Asia centre which will act as a secretariat, and more ministerial engagement at foreign, trade and cultural ministers' level.

Also, India will host a 100-member youth delegation from the Central Asian countries every year to promote greater understanding.

It has also been proposed that Joint Counter-Terrorism Exercises will be held between India and interested Central Asian countries.

To highlight the common linguistic and spiritual linkages, both sides have agreed to commission a ‘Dictionary of Common words used in India and Central Asian countries and showcase Buddhist exhibitions in Central Asian countries.

Russia has delivered to India all the contracted 70,000 AK-203 Kalashnikov assault rifles as envisaged under a contract signed late last summer between India and Kalashnikov.

The entire delivery was made earlier this week. A source explained, "delivery was fast tracked," pointing to the short time gap between the signing of the contract and its fructification.

The Indian Ministry of Defence intends to procure 670,000 AK-203 assault rifles, and the 70,000 delivered are part of that total.

The rest of the 600,000 will be manufactured in India's Amethi under a joint venture, the contract for which was signed on December 6, 2021.

The day saw the first India-Russia 2+2 meeting at the level of foreign and defence ministers, as well as Russian President Putin's visit to the annual summit in Delhi.

The total cost of the contract is around Rs 50 billion.

As part of India's localisation of defence manufacturing, a special purpose joint venture called Indo-Russian Rifles Private Ltd (IRRPL) has been created for the production of 600,000 AK-203 in India. The Joint Venture is between India, represented by the Defence PSUs-Advanced Weapons & Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) & Munitions India Limited (MIL) and Russia, represented by Rosoboronexport (RoE) & Concern Kalashnikov (CK).

The 7.62 x 39mm calibre AK-203 rifles will replace the in-service INSAS rifles that were inducted over three decades ago. The AK-203 assault rifles have an effective range of 800 meters, are light in weight, and are seen as being as easy to use as modern assault rifles.

Schools resumed physical sessions for classes 1 to 12 in India's Maharashtra on Monday and the state government expressed hope that students would enjoy being back to their classrooms in a safe atmosphere.

Last week, the Maharashtra government allowed the offline classes to resume from January 24 after Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray approved a proposal to this effect that was sent to him by the school education department.

Schools across the state were closed in the first week of January due to a spike in the coronavirus cases and in the wake of the emergence of the highly infectious Omicron variant. However, a number of parents, activists in the field as well as teachers had strongly opposed the move to shut the schools, saying it would adversely affect the students.

In Mumbai, the local civic body had earlier announced the closure of schools for Classes 1 to 9 till January 31.
But, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) assessment later indicated that the cases of Omicron infection were not on the rise, and it had said the curve was flattening. It had prompted officials to propose the reopening of schools for physical attendance.

Germany’s Ambassador to India Walter J Lindner has said that his country will intensify cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

His comments come even as German frigate FGS Bayern (F217) made a port call to Mumbai as part of its seven-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific region.

He said, "It is the beginning of intensified cooperation…”

Germany, along with other European countries like France, UK, have upped the engagement in the region.

Asked if Germany will join any diplomatic group or exercises such as the Malabar exercises, the top German envoy said, “Not going in details. In general, we will be more active in the Indo-Pacific region. We will see what kind of organisation it means and includes—whether it’s a military organisation or a diplomatic organisation. It shows that our focus is shifting more to the region than it was before.”

The Malabar exercise is an annual naval exercise between India, US, Australia and Japan in the region.

In 2020, the German government announced its policy on the Indo‑Pacific with the aim to strengthen the country's role in the region in the long term.

Envoy Lindner, who was on the visit of the frigate, explained, that it’s a “symbolic act that we walk the talk, we are just not issuing nice papers in strategy, but we send a symbol”.

The visit of the German frigate to Mumbai marks the last stop of its deployment, after a decade-long presence in the Indo-Pacific.

The ship also helped enforce the UN-administered arms embargo against North Korea prior to its journey through the South China Sea.

The envoy’s visit coincided with the visit of the chief of the German Navy, Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schönbach to Delhi.

Commander Tilo Kalski of the frigate, who was also present at the virtual presser, said, “This tour has been kind of an ice breaker, kind of the beginning of new era”.

Indo-Pacific has emerged as one of the key focuses of the world leaders, given that it houses more than 50 per cent of the world population, and a substantial trade passes through its waters.

Speaking on China, the envoy said that Beijing is a “partner in some respect for the global challenges" it is also an "economic competitor and a systemic rival which means we have a different system. We have a democratic system just like India has.”

On the Chinese aggressiveness in the region, he said. “We don’t turn a blind eye on (such) behaviour that threatens international law...We are in favour of respect for the rules-based international community.”

A family of four, including an infant, believed to be from India died due to exposure from extreme cold weather near the US-Canada border, officials said, indicating it to be a case of human trafficking.

Officials on Thursday said that the bodies of four people — two adults, a teen and an infant — were found on the Canadian side of the US/Canada border near Emerson on Wednesday.

Authorities believe it was a failed crossing attempt during the freezing blizzard.

The bodies were discovered amid vast snowdrifts on Wednesday, when the temperature was -35 degrees Celsius (-31 degrees Fahrenheit), accounting for the wind, officials said.

The US Department of Justice has said the four dead were “tentatively identified” as separated members of a group that had been detained earlier in the day while wandering in the snowy fields near the border.

On Thursday, US authorities said a Florida man identified as Steve Shand, 47, had been charged with human smuggling in connection with the group.

According to reports, a US border patrol in North Dakota stopped a passenger van carrying 15 people just south of the Canadian border on Wednesday.

It said that Shand was driving the van with two undocumented Indian nationals.

Around the same time, five other people – all undocumented Indian nationals – were spotted by law enforcement in the snow nearby.

The group said it had been walking for more than 11 hours outside in the freezing and disorienting conditions.

One of the men in the group was carrying a backpack that had baby supplies in it. He told officers it belonged to a family who had become separated from the group overnight, according to court documents.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Jane MacLatchy told a news conference in Winnipeg on Thursday that once the officials were notified that the family may still be in Manitoba, officers immediately began to search the area.

After a difficult search in nearly impossible terrain, she said the officers found three bodies together — a man, a woman and a baby — just 10 meters from the border near Emerson. The search continued and a teen boy was found a short distance away. It is believed they died from exposure.

“It is an absolute and heartbreaking tragedy,” MacLatchy said.

Meanwhile, India’s external affairs minister S Jaishankar expressed shock over the tragedy and asked India’s envoys to the US and Canada to respond to the situation.

A family of four, including an infant, believed to be from India died due to exposure from extreme cold weather near the US-Canada border, officials said, indicating it to be a case of human trafficking.

Two Indians were among three dead in a suspected drone attack in AbuDhabi on Monday. The drone attack set off a blast and fire. Third person who was killed was a Pakistani.

Three petrol tanks exploded near the storage facility of oil giant ADNOC, while a fire ignited in a construction area at Abu Dhabi airport.

Police said "small flying objects" were found at both places, suggesting the sort of deliberate attack that is unheard of in the wealthy UAE, a renowned safe haven in the volatile Middle East.

"Preliminary investigations indicate the detection of small flying objects, possibly belonging to drones, that fell in the two areas and may have caused the explosion and fire," police said in a statement, adding that the incidents were under investigation.

Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels did not claim the attacks. But the Huthis' military spokesman announced a "military operation" in the UAE, a partner in Yemen's pro-government coalition, in what would be a major escalation in the seven-year war.

Yahya Saree tweeted that the rebels' armed forces had said they would "announce an important military operation in the UAE in the coming hours".

Drone attacks are a hallmark of the Huthis' assaults on Saudi Arabia, the UAE ally which is leading the coalition fighting for Yemen's government in a grinding civil war.

The rebels have previously threatened to target Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the gleaming crown jewels of the UAE which last year opened its first nuclear power plant.

The Huthis' latest statement comes two weeks after they seized a UAE-flagged ship, the Rwabee, off the Yemen coast, and released footage purporting to show military equipment on board.

The UAE said the Rwabee, whose 11 crew are now hostages, was a "civilian cargo vessel" and called the hijacking a "dangerous escalation" in the busy Red Sea shipping route.

The rebels later rejected a UN Security Council demand for the ship's immediate release, saying it was "not carrying... toys for children but weapons for extremists".

Yemen's conflict has been a catastrophe for millions of its citizens who have fled their homes, with many on the brink of famine, in what the UN calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

The UAE joined the coalition against the Huthis before announcing a change of tack in 2019.

The pro-government Giants Brigade, backed by the Saudis and UAE, recently delivered a significant blow to the rebels by retaking three districts in Shabwa governorate.

The clashes were part of a surge in violence in the shattered country, where the war is being fought on several fronts.
