Pakistan has always tried to reach out to India for peace, Pakistan’s former high commissioner to India Abdul Basit told WION in an exclusive conversation on Thursday, adding that it is high time that New Delhi reciprocates the gesture.

Basit spoke to WION in response to a report that Pakistan is unveiling its new National Security Policy, one of the agendas of which is to end hostility with India “for the next 100 years” and restore commercial ties.

“Pakistan has always tried to reach out to India. Let’s hope that in response to this new policy, India also understands and reaches out to Pakistan,” Basit, who was speaking after a long interval to an Indian-based channel, said.

He said that both countries need to trust each other again, adding that the desired peace won’t come to fruition until core problems are resolved.

And for that, Basit added, India and Pakistan must resolve the Kashmir issue “once and for all”.

“Mutual trust can't be built unless the fundamentals are attended,” Basit emphasised. “We have tried [in the past], it hasn’t [happened].”

When asked if trading and business activities can be restored between the two nations, as spelt out in Pakistan’s new policy, even if the lingering border issue persists, Basit expressed pessimism.

“Geo-strategic and geo-economics [issues] are interlinked. One must work on both these fundamentals. We can’t isolate,” he said.

“This has been the case with India and Pakistan for so many years,” Basit said, asserting, “In my view, the geo-strategic and geo-economic issues have&nbsp;to go hand-in-hand.”

He also spoke about Pakistan’s chequered history of no elected prime minister having ever completed their five-year term.

When asked if the issue of political stability can be taken care of in the new security policy, Basit said, “Civil-military relationship is improving. Since 2008, the party in power have been able to complete their terms.”

“The culture of ‘yes prime minister’ has changed,” he said, adding, “It does take time. It’s a gradual process.”

When asked if the Imran Khan-led government would be able to take the opposition on board since they weren’t consulted while formulating the new policy, Basit responded, “Let's hope that they are able to discuss in parliament and it is incorporated. The opposition has to be taken on board as without them, it's not going to work.”

Even as India faces the prospect of inviting CAATSA sanctions by the US against the purchase of the Russian-made S-400 missile system, a top official from Biden's administration has indicated that New Delhi may be exempted under the American law.

James O’Brien, the nominee for Coordinator for Sanctions Policy, on Wednesday said that despite aspersions cast by some senior officials, “there are important geostrategic considerations, particularly with the relationship to China” and “so, I think, we have to look at what the balance is”.

O’Brien was summoned before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for his confirmation hearing.

During the hearing, Republican Senator Todd Young was asking O’Brien about sanctioning India under the Countering America`s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) which requires sanctions against countries buying Russian defence equipment.

“India’s vital ally in our competition against China, and that’s why I believe we should resist taking any actions that might drive them away from us and the Quad. I’m therefore strongly supportive of waiving CAATSA sanctions against India, given our shared foreign policy interests,” Young said.

Chuck Schumer, the leader of the majority Democratic Party in the Senate, has previously expressed opposition to waivers while Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Bob Menendez has been ambivalent about it.Young, along with fellow Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Roger Marshall introduced a bill last year to help India evade the CAATSA sanctions.

S-400 deal: Will India get exemption from CAATSA sanctions? Here's what Biden’s nominee said

There was no breakthrough in the 14th round of talks between the militaries of India and China, and the two sides agreed to maintain dialogue via military and diplomatic channels to work out a "mutually acceptable resolution" of the remaining issues.

The two sides said in a joint statement on Thursday that they have agreed that the next round of border talks should be held at the earliest.
Indian Army Chief General M M Naravane had said on Wednesday that India was hopeful of resolving issues related to disengagement at Patrolling Point 15 (Hot Springs) in eastern Ladakh in the 14th round of talks.

The latest round of talks took place days after India hit out at China for building a bridge across Pangong lake in eastern Ladakh and said it is in an area that has been under illegal occupation of that country for around 60 years.

The 14th round of Corps Commander-level meeting was held on Wednesday at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

The joint statement said that the representatives from the defence and foreign affairs establishments of the two sides were present at the talks.

There was a "frank and in-depth" exchange of views for the resolution of the relevant issues related to the LAC in the western sector (Ladakh border), it said.
The two countries agreed that both of them should follow "the guidance provided by the state leaders" and work for the resolution of the remaining issues at the earliest, according to the statement.

"It was noted that this would help in restoration of peace and tranquillity along the LAC in the Western Sector and enable progress in bilateral relations," it mentioned.

The two countries also agreed to consolidate on the previous outcomes and take effective efforts to maintain the security and stability on the ground in the Western Sector including during winter, it said.

"The two sides agreed to stay in close contact and maintain dialogue via military and diplomatic channels and work out a mutually acceptable resolution of the remaining issues at the earliest," it mentioned.

The two sides agreed that the next round of the commanders' talks should be held at the earliest, the statement said.

Along with Hot Springs, India has been talking with China about a quick disengagement on all the remaining friction points including resolution of issues in Depsang Bulge and Demchok.

Last week, India described China's renaming of some places in Arunachal Pradesh as a "ridiculous exercise" to support "untenable territorial" claims, asserting that the state has always been and will always remain an "inalienable" part of India.

In their virtual diplomatic talks on November 18 last year, India and China had agreed to hold the 14th round of military talks at an early date to achieve the objective of complete disengagement in remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh.

The 13th round of talks had taken place on October 10 last year and it had ended in a stalemate with the Indian Army saying after the dialogue that the "constructive suggestions" made by it were neither agreeable to the Chinese side nor it could provide any "forward-looking" proposals.

The eastern Ladakh border standoff between the Indian and Chinese militaries erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong lake area.

Both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry.

As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process last year in the north and south banks of the Pangong lake and in the Gogra area.

Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the sensitive sector.&nbsp;

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent announcement to extend the road in the Lipulekh region has provoked outrage in Nepal with many top leaders calling the ongoing construction ‘illegal’.&nbsp;

During an election rally in the Haldwani area of Uttarakhand on December 30, Modi had announced that his government has extended a road to Lipulekh and further expansion work is going on.

Lipulekh, which lies at the tri-junction between India’s northern Uttarakhand state, China and Nepal, is claimed by Kathmandu.

Former prime minister and the senior leader of the CPN-Unified Socialist, Jhala Nath Khanal—one of the ruling alliances in the Nepal government—condemned the construction activity.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The Indian government knows very well that the area of Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura are the sovereign territory of Nepal. Any development activity conducted there without consultation of the Nepalese government is totally illegal and it is a violation of our territorial integrity and national sovereignty,” he said in a statement.&nbsp;

He&nbsp;requested the government to take necessary measures to “protect the territory”.

Iran has offered to transfer Indian wheat to Afghanistan. The proposal was made by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian during his telephonic conversation with India's Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar. The conversation took place on Saturday (January 8) and came as India sent 3rd humanitarian support to Afghanistan after Taliban captured power in August 2021.

Afghanistan was the key focus during the talks, both Indian and Iranian readouts confirmed. Iranian readout said that Iran foreign minister "stressed the need to form an inclusive government in the country" and while referring to India's humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, announced "measures and cooperation by Iran to transfer this aid in the form of wheat, medicine... to the country".

Last week, India sent 2 batches of humanitarian aid to the country.&nbsp;First one was sent on&nbsp;January 1st and the second was sent on January 7th. The aid consisted of medical assistance. November 2021 saw India delivering 1.6 tons of medical assistance to Afghanistan through World Health Organization (WHO).

Tweet by EAM Jaishankar on the talks said, "discussed the difficulties of Covid, challenges in Afghanistan, prospects of Chabahar and complexities of the Iranian nuclear issue."

Future supplies to Afghanistan will be made via Chabahar port. The port has huge Indian investment. It was on December 24, 2018 that Indian company, India Ports Global Limited, a subsidiary of India Ports Global Chabahar Free Zone (IPGCFZ) took over operations of the Chabahar port. Since December 2018 the port has handled 160 vessels, 14,420 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) and 3.2 million tons of bulk and general cargo. Before the fall of Kabul, India has been sending relief to Afghanistan on a regular basis via the Chabahar port.

India has committed to providing 50,000 MT of wheat, essential lifesaving medicines and Covid Vaccines to Afghan people. One of the proposals to send the supplies had been via Pakistan. While Islamabad has publicly stated it will allow movement of supplies, no transfer has started even as New Delhi and Islamabad continue to discuss the modalities of transfer.

Last week, India sent 2 batches of humanitarian aid to the country. First one was sent on January 1st and the second was sent on January 7th. The aid consisted of medical assistance. November 2021 saw India delivering 1.6 tons of medical assistance to Afghanistan through World Health Organization (WHO). Tweet by EAM Jaishankar on the talks said, "discussed the difficulties of Covid, challenges in Afghanistan, prospects of Chabahar and complexities of the Iranian nuclear issue." A wide ranging conversation with my Iranian colleague, FM @Amirabdolahian . Discussed the difficulties of Covid, challenges in Afghanistan, prospects of Chabahar and complexities of the Iranian nuclear issue. — Dr. S. Jaishankar (@DrSJaishankar) January 8, 2022 × Future supplies to Afghanistan will be made via Chabahar port.

Indian Naval Ship Kesari arrived at the port of Moroni, Comoros on Friday to extend technical assistance to the Comorian Coast Guard.

The visit came in response to the request made by the Chief of Comorian Coast Guard Commander Moudjib Rahmane Adane to the Indian Navy during his visit to India in November last year to participate in the Goa Maritime Conclave.

The request was to provide technical assistance in repairing a grounded patrol vessel P002-M' kombozi.

A release by Indian mission to Antananarivo, which is also concurrently accredited to Comoros, said," India has always been a reliable responder to the requests made by Comoros", adding, "Visit of INS Kesari reflects India’s commitment to work together with Comoros, its maritime neighbour and partner in the Indian Ocean Region."

India remains committed to further strengthening its development partnership with Comoros that aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of SAGAR that stands for Security And Growth for All in the Indian Ocean Region, the release stated.

Interestingly, the ship docked on the day when Chinese foreign minister (FM) Wang Yi was in the country.

The Chinese FM is on a visit to Africa and had earlier visited Ethiopia and Kenya. The visit to Comoros comes even as Beijing has been trying to increase its presence and engagement in the Indian Ocean and the African continent.

Comoros is strategically located at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean Region, between northern Madagascar and northern Mozambique.

This is not the first time that INS Kesari docked in Comoros.

In June 2020, the Indian Naval Ship had supplied a consignment of COVID-19 related essential medicines from India. Arrived on board were a 14-member Indian Medical Assistance Team to work with the Comorian health authorities in dealing with the pandemic and dengue fever.

Other than INS Kesari, March 2021 saw Indian Naval Ship Jalashwa delivering 1000 metric tonnes of rice to the island country.

There has been a spurt in high-level engagements between the two countries recently.

India's vice president Venkaiah Naidu visited the country in 2019 during which 6 MoUs were signed, including in Cooperation in the Field of Defence.

Comoros foreign minister Dhoihir Dhoulkamal visited India in February 2021 to participate in the Aero India 2021 and IOR Defence minister conclave in Bengaluru. &nbsp;

Last year, India trained 12 diplomats from the country during the first Special Course for diplomats from the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) organised by Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS), Delhi.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday slammed China, even as Bejing continued to indulge in provocative behaviour with New Delhi. Calling Chinese govt issuing new names for 15 locations in Arunachal Pradesh as a "ridiculous exercise to support untenable territorial claims", MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "instead of engaging in such antics China will work constructively with us to resolve the outstanding friction points in areas along the Western Sector of the LAC in India-China border areas."

China has been involved in a military buildup at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh since 2020. That year also saw the Galwan incident in which India lost 20 of its soldiers, while China claimed to have lost only 4 soldiers, a figure which is doubted given the country's non-transparent record.&nbsp;

MEA spokesperson reminded Bejing that, "Arunachal Pradesh has always been and will always remain an inalienable part of India" and calling Tuting as “DouDeng” or River Siyom as “XiYueMu” or even Kibithu as “Daba” &nbsp;won't "alter the fact". &nbsp;

China sees the Indian state as the so-called "South Tibet", and has been in the past indulging in such moves. China had also sought to assign names to places in Arunachal Pradesh in April 2017.

Last year saw disengagement at areas like Pangong lake, Gogra in eastern Ladakh but tensions remain high as China continues to undertake rapid infrastructural development works on its side of LAC.

Reacting to development of bridge being made at the Pangong lake, spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "this bridge is being constructed in areas that have been under illegal occupation by China for around 60 years now" and "India has never accepted such illegal occupation."

India has improved development of border infrastructure significantly. Around 100 bridges, roads, tunnels constructed by Border Road Organisation (BRO) have been inaugurated in 2021. BRO constructed road over Umling La Pass, in Eastern Ladakh, at 19,024 ft above sea level. It is the highest motorable road in the world and was inaugurated virtually by Indian defence minister on December 28, 2021.

Asked about the letter written by Political Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy to Indian MP for attending Tibet event, spokesperson said, "substance, tone and tenor of the letter are inappropriate" and "Chinese side should note that India is a vibrant democracy and Hon’ble MPs, as representatives of the people, undertake activities as per their views and beliefs."

In a major crossing of a milestone, India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has said that India has achieved its non-fossil fuel-based energy target, something that was to be completed by 2030

“At COP-21, as part of its NDCs, India had committed to achieving 40 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil energy sources by 2030. The country has achieved this target in November 2021 itself,” MNRE said in a statement released last month

The Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with total non-fossil based installed energy capacity was 157.32 gigawatts (GW). This is 40.1 per cent of the total installed energy capacity of 392.01 GW

In the last 7.5 years, India has shown a tremendous rate of growth and has added maximum capacity for renewable energy among large economies.

As per REN21 Renewables 2020 Global Status Report, there was a total investment of USD 64.4 billion in India's renewable energy programmes and projects. USD 11.2 billion were invested in the year 2019 alone.

Government data shows that India's non-conventional energy sector received USD 7.27 billion through foreign direct investment from the year 2014-15 up to June 2021. Out of this, FDI of USD 797.21 million trickled in during 2020-21.

Days after China released a propaganda video of PLA soldiers unfurling their national flag in Ladakh's Galwan Valley, the Indian Army hit back on Wednesday by sharing pictures of the soldiers hoisting the tricolour in the region.

The photographs were also posted by Union Law and Justice minister Kiren Rijiju on Twitter with the caption "brave Indian Army soldiers in Galwan Valley on the occasion of #NewYear2022."

The images were shared three days after the Chinese state media put up a video on social media, showing PLA soldiers unfurling their flag allegedly in the valley.

The Indian Army shared the photos in order to discredit propaganda run by China which sought to falsely potray that Beijing claims Galwan valley as its own territory.

In one of the photos, released by the sources in the Indian security establishment, around 30 Indian soldiers were seen with the national flag.

Another photo showed the group with four of them holding the national flag and another tri-colour flying high on a flagpole adjacent to a temporary observation post.

It is being said that the photographs were of January 1 in the Galwan Valley.

The Indian security establishment had debunked the video, saying that&nbsp;the Chinese soldiers celebrating the New Year is in a depth area on the Chinese side near the Galwan Valley region and that it is not at all close to the buffer zone created in the region following the deadly clashes on June 15.

The eastern Ladakh border standoff between the Indian and Chinese militaries erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong lake areas.
Both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry.

As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process last year in the north and south banks of the Pangong lake and in the Gogra area.

Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the sensitive sector.

On December 21, the Income Tax department had carried out search and seizure operations across India after receiving a tip-off on select foreign-controlled mobile communication and mobile handset manufacturing companies and their associated persons.

Several premises in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bihar, Rajasthan and Delhi NCR were covered.

“The search revealed that two major companies have made remittance in the nature of royalty, to and on behalf of its group companies located abroad, which aggregates to over Rs 5,500 crore. The claim of such expenses does not seem to be appropriate in light of the facts and evidence gathered during the search,” the I-T department said in a statement without naming the Chinese mobile manufacturers, but media reports confirmed the names Xiaomi and Oppo.

“It is gathered that both these companies had not complied with the regulatory mandate prescribed under the Income-tax Act, 1961 for disclosure of transactions with associated enterprises. Such lapse makes them liable for penal action under the Income-tax Act, 1961, the quantum of which could be in the range of more than Rs 1,000 crore (US $ <a name="_Hlk91924825">134&nbsp;</a>million approx.),” the CBDT statement added.

South Africa captain Dean Elgar scored an unbeaten 52 against India as the hosts showed a dogged determination to stay in the fight on a spicy wicket and closed the fourth day on 94 for four in the first test at Centurion Park on Wednesday.

South Africa are still 211 runs off their record victory target at the venue of 305 on a wicket that is treacherous for the batsmen with sideways movement, but also variable bounce.

Some deliveries are staying low and others spitting off the surface with exaggerated bounce.

They will need to negotiate the skilful India attack on the final day as the tourists attempt to secure a victory on the way to a hoped for first ever series win in South Africa with tests in Johannesburg and Cape Town to follow.

South Africa lost Aiden Markram (one), Keegan Petersen (17), nightwatchman Keshav Maharaj (eight) and Rassie van der Dussen, who showed great patience for his 11 from 65 balls before he was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah (2-22) with a superb in-swinger while not offering a shot.

The highest fourth innings score to win at Centurion Park is 251 for eight by England in 2000, an infamous test where both teams agreed to forfeit an innings after rain to force a result.

The next best successful chase is 226 for four by South Africa against Pakistan in 1998.

India were earlier bowled out for 174 in their second innings, the South African seamers expertly using the conditions with Kagiso Rabada (4-42) and 21-year-old left-arm debutant Marco Jansen (4-55) the chief wicket takers.

None of the tourists’ batsmen were able to get settled at the crease with Rishabh Pant (34) the top scorer as he tried to take the attack to the bowlers.

There was more disappointment for India captain Virat Kohli (18) as he chased a wide delivery for the second time in the test and was caught by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock off the bowling of Jansen.

In 14 tests since the start of 2020, Kohli has scored 652 runs at an average of 26.08, almost half his career average before this test of 50.65.

A day after a controversy broke out over the Central government refusing to renew the Missionaries of Charity's license to accept foreign donations, top officials of the organisation said work in its orphanages, hospices and shelters for the poor were "going on as usual."

Officials from the Mission, founded by Mother Teresa here in 1950, said that talks were on with auditors and experts to try and resolve the situation, indicating an appeal against the Centre's decision to cancel the license under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act would be made.&nbsp;

"Work in all our orphanages, shelters, homes are going on as usual," the official said, adding that "in India we have been sustaining all these years with love and support of people in this country. So we will continue to serve the poor, destitute, ailing, aged with the same gusto in the same way."&nbsp;

A large portion of the money spent in India comes from donations sourced locally, officials said while pleading ignorance of the exact amounts received as donation locally or through foreign donations.&nbsp;

The MoC headquartered in Kolkata has over 250 bank accounts in the country for utilising foreign funds, another official of the organisation said.&nbsp;

"We are in talks with experts and auditors to resolve the situation," the official said. MHA said in a statement on Monday that renewal of the FCRA license was refused on December 25, Christmas day, for not meeting eligibility conditions, indicating that there issues with its audit report.&nbsp;

The Ministry also said 'no request has been received from Missionaries of Charity for review of this refusal of renewal.'

The cancellation order came within weeks after a police complaint was registered against the director of a children's home run by the Missionaries of Charity in Gujarat for allegedly attempting to convert inmates. The late Mother Teresa who was who was canonised a Saint in September 2016, and the Missionaries of Charity which she founded, shot into prominence after she won the Ramon Magsasay Peace Prize in 1962 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

The organisation today is spread over 139 countries and runs orphanages, homes for the dying and lepers besides looking after refugees, blind, disabled, aged, alcoholics, poor and homeless and victims of floods, epidemics and famine.

The world's economic output will exceed $100 trillion for the first time next year and it will take China a little longer than previously thought to overtake the United States as the No.1 economy, a report showed on Sunday.

British consultancy Cebr predicted China will become the world`s top economy in dollar terms in 2030, two years later than forecast in last year`s World Economic League Table report.

India looks set to overtake France next year and then Britain in 2023 to regain its place as the world's sixth-biggest economy, Cebr said.

"The important issue for the 2020s is how the world economies cope with inflation, which has now reached 6.8 per cent in the U.S.," said Cebr deputy chairman Douglas McWilliams.

"We hope that a relatively modest adjustment to the tiller will bring the non-transitory elements under control. If not, then the world will need to brace itself for a recession in 2023 or 2024."

The report showed Germany was on track to overtake Japan in terms of economic output in 2033. Russia could become a Top 10 economy by 2036 and Indonesia looks on track for ninth place in 2034.

Indian foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who is on a two-day visit to Myanmar, held meetings with the military junta chief, Min Aung Hlaing, and members of Aung San Suu Kyi’s political party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), on Thursday and conveyed India’s interest in seeing “Myanmar’s return to democracy at the earliest.”

Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing had launched the coup in February and ousted the country's charismatic leader Aung San Suu Kyi to become the prime minister.

In a statement, India’s ministry of external affairs said, “During his meetings with all concerned, foreign secretary emphasised India’s interest in seeing Myanmar’s return to democracy at the earliest, release of detainees and prisoners, resolution of issues through dialogue, and complete cessation of all violence.”

The statement added that India expressed its support to the five-point consensus of the ASEAN on Myanmar and “hoped that progress would be made in a pragmatic and constructive manner”.

India had requested for a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi but it not materialised. During the visit, the foreign secretary&nbsp;had meetings with envoys of the US, Australia, Norway, Czech Republic, Cambodia, Thailand, Japan-based out of the country.

During the meeting, India also raised “matters related to India’s security” in view of the recent Churachandpur incident and called on Myanmar’s military leadership to put an end to any form of violence and maintain peace and stability in the border areas.

“Both sides reiterated their commitment to ensure that their respective territories would not be allowed to be used for any activities inimical to the other,” the statement said.

Last month, insurgents had attacked a convoy of Assam rifles killing its Commanding Officer Colonel Viplav Tripathi, his wife and his five-year-old son, along with four personnel in northeastern Manipur state, which borders Myanmar.

The People’s Liberation Army and the Manipur Naga People’s Front claimed responsibility for the incident.

Notably, the release pointed out that “any developments” in Myanmar “have a direct impact on India’s bordering regions. Peace and stability in Myanmar remain of utmost importance to India, specifically to its North Eastern Region.”

Recently, Myanmar had handed over five insurgents to India, the second time in two years that such a development has taken place.&nbsp;

On the connectivity front, projects like Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project and the Trilateral Highway were also discussed with New Delhi retreating its “commitment for expeditious implementation of ongoing connectivity initiatives”.

India has been developing projects like the Rakhine State Development Programme and Border Area Development Programme for Rohingya refugees, which the MEA statement has categorically called “people of Myanmar”.

As part of the development programme, India has handed over pre-fabricated houses to displaced returnees.

During the visit, Shringla also handed over 1 million doses of “Made in India” vaccines to the Myanmar Red Cross Society and a grant of 10,000 tons of rice and wheat.

Notably, Myanmar was the first country to get Indian made vaccines when New Delhi started its vaccine export program in January this year. The first consignment of vaccines was sent to the country on January 22 this year. So far, India has sent 4.7 million doses of vaccines to the ASEAN country.

The past two years have seen a drastic change in the work culture after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic started spreading across the world at the beginning of 2020, forcing countries to implement partial or complete lockdown.&nbsp;

Business and offices were shifted online and work from home became the new normal. Globally, many sectors are still practising the work from home culture or have introduced a hybrid system, where employees are coming to offices on one or two days of the week as the Covid variants continue to wreak havoc.&nbsp;

India also imposed lockdowns, allowing only individuals associated with the essential services to continue working as usual but with the following necessary measures, like using face maks, social distancing, sanitising, etc. to curb the spread of the deadly virus.&nbsp;

But is India planning to implement reforms in labour codes, intending to bring about changes on a larger scale? And if it happened, how will it impact individual employees?&nbsp;

Will it change the in-hand salary of employees, working hours, and the number of weekdays? Here's a report:

A report by news agency PTI has stated that four labour codes on wages, social security, industrial relations and occupation safety, health and working conditions are likely to be implemented by the next fiscal year.&nbsp;

"The four labour codes are likely to be implemented in the next financial year of 2022-23 as a large number of states have finalised draft rules on these," an official was quoted by PTI as saying.&nbsp;

"The Centre has completed the process of finalising the draft rules on these codes in February 2021. But since labour is a concurrent subject, the Centre wants the states to implement these as well in one go," he added.&nbsp;

How will it impact individuals?

The report mentioned that the central government has notified four labour codes likely related to wages, social security, occupational safety, health and working conditions.&nbsp;

Hindustan Times has published a report, citing experts as it speculated that the reformed codes might give employees in India a privilege of a four-day workweek instead of five days from next year.

However, there's a catch, if it happens, the employees might have to work for 12 hours on those four days. For the unversed, the labour ministry has indicated that the 48-hour weekly work requirement will be in place.&nbsp;

There's also a possibility that there will be a reduction in in-hand salary and if it happens, the employees' Provident Fund (PF) will be impacted.&nbsp;

When the codes are likely to be implemented?

India's Union Labour Minister Bhupender Yadav in a reply to the Rajya Sabha earlier this week had said that the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code is the only code on which the least number of 13 states have pre-published the draft rules.&nbsp;

However, the Centre as well as states are required to notify rules under the four codes to enforce these laws in respective jurisdictions.&nbsp;

Under the Codes, the power to make rules have been entrusted to the Central Government, State Government and appropriate Government and there is a requirement of publication of Rules in their official Gazette for a period of 30 or 45 days for public consultation.&nbsp;

Pakistan didn't take action against terrorists as groups targeting India continue to operate: US report

US President Joe Biden’s nominee for envoy to India, Eric Michael Garcetti, has vowed to double-down America’s efforts to strengthen “India’s capacity to secure its borders and defend its sovereignty” while noting that New Delhi is situated in a “tough neighbourhood”.

His comments came during testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee following the confirmation hearing for US Ambassador to India.

“India is situated in a tough neighbourhood. If confirmed, I intend to double-down on our efforts to strengthen India’s capacity to secure its borders and deter aggression through counterterrorism coordination,” the envoy-desginate.

India in a tough neighbourhood, will help secure its borders, says Biden’s envoy pick Garcetti

President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind is all set to pay an official visit to Dhaka from December 15-17 to participate in the ongoing Victory Day celebrations currently underway to observe the golden jubilee of the birth of Bangladesh in 1971 – a happening which was largely possible due to India’s direct and indirect intervention both diplomatically, and militarily. &nbsp;

Similarly, India too, December 16, which is marked as the Victory Day (Vijay Divas in Hindi), is celebrating in a big way holding meetings, workshops, photo exhibitions commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh as a free and liberated nation. While Dhaka is all spruced up to receive the Indian President, on its part, India sending its President to Bangladesh is an extraordinarily huge gesture signifying the importance India accords to Bangladesh. Such a gesture and the subsequent visit is bound to further reinforce the bilateral ties between the two friendly countries.&nbsp;

Bangladesh also seems enthusiastic to welcome the Indian President and his entourage and is thus reciprocating the gesture in equal measure&nbsp;in Dhaka. Other than being present in the Victory Day celebrations, President Kovind will hold talks with his Bangladesh counterpart, Abdul Hamid and will also be called upon by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Home Minister, other Cabinet Ministers and top dignitaries of the Bangladesh government.

Regarding this high-profile upcoming visit of the Indian President, it will not be impertinent to remind the readers about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bangladesh visit (March 26 – 27, 2021) to take part in the centenary celebrations of the founding father of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the visit was impactful. Yet, there were mischievous elements backed by Islamic fanatics, who went into a violent mob frenzy after the commencement of the visit which sadly saw trails of destruction of Hindu property including vandalization of the Ustad Alauddin Khan musical academy in Brahmanbaria that shows that the communal elements are still active in Bangladesh primarily to target Indian cultural places due to the former’s religious intolerance and a radical mindset. &nbsp;

This is being mentioned to prime the host authorities to be extra vigilant on the Indian President’s visit as anti-India forces, ostensibly with the tacit support of the forces in Bangladesh, i.e. Pakistan ISI and pro Pakistan elements, may try to sabotage the atmospherics by engaging into unpleasant activities.&nbsp;

Some quarters may feel that such an apprehension is perhaps far-fetched or unrealistic, yet, an alert law and order apparatus needs to be on its toes to ensure that no untoward incident is allowed to happen in an attempt to impair Indo-BD relations or foment a communal divide. &nbsp;This seems more imperative in view of the recent reports when pro-Pakistan supporters donning jerseys and carrying Pakistani flags were seen in the stadium cheering the Pakistani team in the cricket tourneys.&nbsp;

In sum, this means pro-Pakistan, and by implication, anti-India forces are still active and their nefarious plans to dampen the bilateral ties this should not be permitted to succeed. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

To tie up the loose ends on the emerging visit of the Indian President, the Indian Foreign Secretary, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who has also been the Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh, not very long ago, paid a visit to Dhaka which was considered significant as he carried an important communication from the Indian government.

Amid these rejoicings, however, there was a sudden dampener for Bangladesh when the US recently imposed sanctions on Bangladesh’s prestigious security outfit the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and its top officials including the top cop, Benazir Ahmad. &nbsp;

In total, six current and former officials have been indicted by the US on the International Human Rights’ Day. &nbsp;

However, Bangladesh was quick to react and protested against the US for slapping sanctions/bans. Bangladesh Foreign Secretary, Masud Bin Momen summoned the US Ambassador in Dhaka, Earl R Miller to register a formal protest against the US decision. In the same vein, Dr Hasan Mahmud, the Bangladesh Information and Broadcasting Minister charged (December 11) the US for first peeping into its own track record of human rights’ abuses before casting aspersions on Bangladesh. &nbsp;

From these angry reactions, it would appear that Bangladesh will not accept such diktat from the US and continue to make a noise. Bangladesh is more upset on the US decision for revoking the visa of former Army Chief Gen Aziz Ahmed for his alleged charges of corruption and irregularities. These developments are unlikely to affect the President’s visit but are worth taking note of to get a holistic picture of the prevailing scenario.

In the meantime, to keep up the atmospherics and also in line with keeping up the spirit of the two countries alive, the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, Vikram Doraiswamy stated (December 10) that the secular identity of Bangladesh is intact and the country had, changed the `ideological map’ of South Asia through it’s liberation in 1971.

He further said that Indo-BD friendship is guaranteed because a nation that is comfortable on its own identity that Bangladesh is, will always be a friend to its neighbor. Such articulations on a clear note of optimism, is a perfect backdrop under which President Kovind’s visit to Bangladesh is afoot and this is expected to open a new vista in the bilateral relations further cementing ties, also proving to be an example to other nations in South Asia. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Indian President's visit to Bangladesh on 'Victory Day' is a huge gesture

India on Monday voted against United Nations Security Council's draft resolution which aimed to 'securitize' climate action undermining hard-won consensus in Glasgow. India's Permanent Representative to UN TS Tirumurti explained India's position at the UN

Ambassador TS Tirumurti in his speech also spoke against drawing a separate link between security and climate change.

The draft resolution that has been co-authored by Ireland and Niger states that the adverse effects of climate change can "lead...to social tensions..., exacerbating, prolonging, or contributing to the risk of future conflicts and instability and posing a key risk to global peace, security, and stability".

"India is second to none when it comes to climate action and climate justice. But the UN Security Council is not the place to discuss either issue. In fact, the attempt to do so appears to be motivated by a desire to evade responsibility in the appropriate forum and divert the world’s attention from an unwillingness to deliver where it counts," Tirumurthy said.

The climate resolution was seen as an attempt by the western countries to evade its responsibility on climate finance that has been dominating the climate change debate, especially at the recently-concluded Glasgow climate summit.

"Developed countries must provide climate finance of $1 trillion at the earliest. It is necessary that climate finance be tracked with the same diligence as climate mitigation. And the reality, Mr President, is that the developed countries have fallen well short of their promises. This is particularly important to recognise because today’s attempt to link climate with security really seeks to obfuscate lack of progress on critical issues under the UNFCCC process," the Indian envoy highlighted.

At the high table, out of 15 countries, 12 supported the resolution, two countries—India and Russia—voted against it&nbsp;and China&nbsp;abstained from it. Russian veto led to the non-adoption of the resolution.

Interestingly, this was the first usage of veto by any permanent member of the council this year. And despite 12 voting in support, all was not picture perfect. Three countries of the council did not co-sponsor it—France, which is a permanent 5 member of the UNSC, Kenya and Vietnam.

Essentially, the resolution did not find any takers from three Asian members of the council—India, China and Vietnam.

Pointing to the "manner in which this issue has been brought before the Council", Envoy Tirumurti said,&nbsp; "Honest answer is that there is no real requirement for this resolution, except for the purpose of bringing climate change under the ambit of the security council. &nbsp;And the reason for that is now decisions can then be taken without the involvement of most developing countries and without recognizing consensus. &nbsp;And all this can be done in the name of preserving international peace and security."

He added, "Many of the UNSC members are the main contributors of climate change due to historical emissions. &nbsp;If the security council indeed takes over the responsibility on this issue, a few states will then have a free hand in deciding on all climate-related issues. This is clearly neither desirable nor acceptable."&nbsp;

US, China—both permanent members of the UNSC—are the top 2 emitters globally.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is a larger platform to discuss the climate issue and has 197 countries as parties to it as compared to 15 at the council.

Before the resolution was taken&nbsp;up, several attempts were made to defuse the situation. Russia, India&nbsp;and China suggested a presidential statement on the Sahelian countries and climate change.

The Sahel is referred to as a large region in northern Africa having a semi-arid climate, and Niger is part of that region. Brazil, which will become a non-permanent member of the UNSC from January 1, had also written a letter.&nbsp;

This is not the first time Russia, India, China and Brazil have taken a similar approach on the issue. In 2011, when Germany had raised the issue at the council, BRICS had taken a similar position. All members of the grouping were members of the council that year. This year, despite attempts to find an amicable solution, the west seems to be thrusting through, and the intent was seen as 'take it, or leave it' approach.

Brazil, which will become a non-permanent member of the UNSC from January 1, had also written a letter.

It is learnt that both the Indian government and the Afghan embassy in Delhi coordinated to arrange for the flight.

According to reports, the flight is likely to fly back over 90 Afghan nationals stranded in India along with some medical supplies.

Puneet Singh Chandhok, president of Indian World Forum, in a statement earlier, said it's a matter of pride that the "three holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji from historical Gurdwaras in Afghanistan and Hindu religious scriptures, including Ramanaya, Mahabharat and Bhagavad Gita," from the fifth century Asamai Mandir in Kabul are being brought to Delhi.

Last week, the Government stated in Lok Sabha that India has evacuated 565 stranded persons from Afghanistan since after Taliban ousted the civilian government in mid-August.

Answering a question from Congress MP Hibi Eden, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said officials of the Ministry of External Affairs were in contact with the Indians left behind.

The statement, however, did not elaborate if the airlifted individuals also included some Afghans.
