India's electricity shortage from March 1 to March 30 was its worst since October, a Reuters analysis of government data shows.

A surge in power demand in March has forced India to cut coal supplies to the non-power sector and put on hold plans for some fuel auctions for utilities without supply deals due to a slump in inventories.

Many northern states suffered hours-long power outages in October, when a crippling coal shortage caused the worst electricity deficit in nearly five years.

Shortages in the eastern state of Jharkhand and Uttarakhand in the north surpassed those of October, the latest data showed.

The western state of Gujarat, one of the country's most industrialized, has ordered a staggered shutdown of "non-continuous process" industries in key cities next week, according to a government note reviewed by Reuters.

A Gujarat energy department official said the move was due to power shortages and to facilitate continuous power supply to farmers, adding a similar strategy was last used in 2010. He declined to comment on how long the staggered shutdown will be in place.

The official declined to be named as he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The southern state of Andhra Pradesh and the tourist resort state of Goa, which registered marginal shortages in October, suffered deficits several times larger in March.

The deficit in March was 574 million kilowatt-hours, a measure that multiplies power level by duration, a Reuters analysis of data from federal grid regulator POSOCO showed.

That amounted to 0.5 per cent of overall demand for the period, or half the deficit of 1per cent in October.

The northern states of Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab and the eastern state of Bihar, some parts of which suffered widespread outages in October, accounted for most of the deficit in March, but shortfalls were lower, the data showed.

India's March electricity shortage worst since coal crisis in October

The New York Times has drawn the ire of Twitter users, especially in the Indian Twitter space for its coverage and characterisation of the general strike.

National trade unions in India have called for a two-day general strike beginning on Monday (March 28). On the same day, NYT published a story with the headline 'General strike throws India into confusion'.

The strike called by trade unions in India is focussed on their two demands

1. Rolling back proposed changes to the labour law

2. Slowing down privatisation

Although the strike had been called on a national level, there were no reports of any widespread disruption in the daily lives of citizens barring in a few pockets of the country.

In the southern Indian state of Kerala and the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, there were partial shutdowns. However, even there, essential services were not affected.

In most other parts of the country, cars were moving freely on the roads, trains were plying as usual and government offices were functioning as usual.

There were no reports of mass rallies from these regions, there was no violence and certainly no 'confusion' as the NYT chose to put it.

Airport operators GMR Airports, Groupe ADP together with Airbus, Axens and Safran signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to conduct joint study on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and their potential in India.

"The objective of the study is to understand and evaluate the demand, the challenges and opportunities of supply, infrastructure and fueling, as well as to prepare a business case for SAF production and use in India for all kind of aviation purposes," said a press release.

What is SAF?

As per the release, the SAF is a clean substitute for fossil jet fuels. Rather than being refined from petroleum, SAF is produced from sustainable resources such as waste oils from a biological origin, agri residues, municipal solid wastes or algae.

SAF produced using the most advanced pathways can provide CO2 emission reduction of up to 85% across the entire SAF lifecycle.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) has the potential to make Indian aviation future-ready. India already has 3rd largest domestic aviation market in the world and it is projected to grow at the rate of 9 per cent per year.

SAF may aid India's efforts to achive the stated goal of reduction in carbon emissions and net-zero target by the year 2070.

A Vietnamese man who tried to row 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) from Thailand to India to see his wife was in custody Thursday after being rescued off the Thai coast, a senior navy official told AFP.

Ho Hoang Hung set off from the Thai holiday island of Phuket in an inflatable rubber dinghy, equipped with water and instant noodles but no navigation system, planning to cross the Bay of Bengal near the start of cyclone season.

A fishing boat found the 37-year-old on Wednesday near the Similan Islands, about 80 kilometres off the Thai mainland, and contacted the navy's maritime security unit, which came and rescued him.

Ho told officials he was trying to reach his wife, who works in Mumbai, after spending two years apart because of Covid travel restrictions, Captain Pichet Songtan from the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre told AFP.

Pichet said the man was found with no map, compass, GPS or change of clothes, and only a limited amount of water.

He had initially flown to Bangkok but found that without a visa he could not travel on to India, and so took a bus to Phuket, where he acquired the dinghy.

India on Thursday said references made to it at a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Islamabad were based on "falsehoods and misrepresentation".

The strong reaction by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) came a day after the OIC at its foreign ministerial meeting in Pakistan criticised India for its policy on Kashmir.

Iron Man of India, Sardar Patel's stature is far more taller in the hearts of the people than the 182 metres tall Statue of Unity at Kevadiya, said President Ram Nath Kovind while addressing the Gujarat state assembly on Thursday, where a function was organised as a part of 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav'.

"Iron Man Sardar Patel gave a new vision to Independent India and strengthened the pillars of the country. The 182 metres tall statue of Sardar Patel at Kevadiya in Gujarat, is the tallest statue in the world. But in the eyes of the nation, Sardar Patel's stature is far more taller than the statue. This image of his, is a small gift in remembrance of that great son of India," said Ram Nath Kovind.

"Gujarat's contribution to India's freedom struggle is immense. Among the top leaders who were dreaming of an independent Bharat, were from this land. People like Dadabhai Naoroji and Pherozeshah Mehta raised their voices for the rights of the people. The state of Gujarat constantly increased its presence in voicing people's concern, culminating that fight into achieving the freedom, under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi. Not only did Mahatma Gandhi extraordinarily led the freedom struggle, but gave a new direction, a new thought and a new vision to the entire world," added Kovind.

"Today, wherever the world is witnessing violence, Mahatma Gandhi's original 'Mantra' of non violence is remembered. Gujarat`s history is unparallel. The land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel is also called as the land of Satyagraha -- seen as a mighty weapon against empirical rule," added Kovind.

The President appreciated economic development Gujarat has achieved over the years. "Right from its inception in 1960, Gujarat has carved out a niche in economic development. I appreciate all the former Chief Ministers, deputy Chief Ministers in achieving this. Gujarat has also been leading the chart in milk revolution, which has made India one of the top milk producers in the world," added Kovind.

After two years of painstaking efforts by the Art Recovery International & the India Pride Project, a 3rd century artefact that was stolen from India has been handed over to the Indian mission in Brussels, Belgium.

The sculpture, which was part of the ruined stupas in Andhra Pradesh’s Nagarjunakonda, was handed over to the Indian envoy in Brussels, Santosh Jha, earlier this month.

The Indian mission in Belgium in a tweet said, "We are grateful for their efforts of Art Recovery International (ARI) and India Pride Project (IPP) & working with ASI to arrange its return to India."

Earlier this year, India Pride Project co-founder S Vijay Kumar informed Art Recovery International Founder and lawyer, Christopher A Marinello, that the stolen limestone sculpture had been offered for sale in 2018 by the Belgian Asian Art Trade.

According to the ARI release, the purchaser had relied on a certificate of clearance from a UK based organisation that "regularly mints such documentation for the art trade as a substitute for proper due diligence without conducting provenance research on well documented and published antiquities."

The artefact was housed in an Indian museum until it was stolen in or around 1995.

It depicts the life of Buddha and shows a court scene from the stûpa 3 in Nagarjunakonda. It also shows a royal couple sitting on a throne attended by servants standing behind while a female servant and a child play with a ram in the foreground.

The development comes as Australia on Monday repatriated 29 antiquities to India. The antiquities range in six broad categories as per themes – Shiva and his disciples, Worshipping Shakti, Lord Vishnu and his forms, Jain tradition, Portraits and decorative objects.

These antiquities come from different time periods from 9th to 10th century CE.

India is reviewing its standard operating procedures for weapons systems and will immediately fix any shortcomings after accidentally launching a missile into Pakistan last week, its defence minister said on Tuesday.

Pakistan said it was not satisfied and reiterated a demand for a joint investigation into the incident by the nuclear-armed arch rivals.

Although tensions between India and Pakistan have calmed in recent months, military experts have previously warned against the possibility of accidents or miscalculations by the South Asian neighbours, who have fought three wars.

The missile, released around 7 p.m. last Wednesday during routine maintenance and inspection, landed in Pakistan without causing any casualties, India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told parliament.

"We attach the highest priority to the safety and security of our weapon systems," Singh said in the first public statement by an Indian official on the incident first reported by Pakistan's military on Thursday.

"I would also like to state that a review of the standard operating procedures for operations, maintenance and inspections is being conducted," Singh added.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said at a news conference that the statement was "incomplete and insufficient".

"Pakistan cannot be satisfied by the explanation given, and I reject it," he said, adding that Islamabad wanted a joint probe.

Pakistan has demanded New Delhi give details about the safety mechanisms in place to prevent accidental missile launches and asked the international community to help maintain regional stability.

China urged the two countries to set up a reporting mechanism to avoid such incidents and share information, said Zhao Lijian, a spokesman at its foreign ministry.

"Pakistan and India are both important countries in South Asia, bearing responsibilities for maintaining regional security and stability," he told reporters on Monday.

While Pakistan appreciated China's statement, Qureshi said that the U.S. State Department spokesperson had "skirted the issue" a day earlier and had not taken a position on the matter, which he stressed could have lead to war.

He added he had written to the UN Security Council too, but said the international community was not taking the matter seriously enough.

Delivering short statements in both houses of India's parliament, Singh said the safety procedures and protocols for the country's missile systems were of the highest standard and reviewed periodically.

"I can assure the House that the missile system is very reliable and safe," he said, without saying which missile had been accidentally launched.

Pakistan on Saturday said it was not satisfied with India's "simplistic explanation" on the "accidental firing" of a missile that landed in Pakistan's Punjab province and demanded a joint probe to accurately establish the facts surrounding the incident.

Foreign Office spokesperson said Pakistan has taken note of the Press Statement by India's Press Information Bureau's Defence Wing regretting the accidental firing of the Indian-origin missile into Pakistani territory on March 9 due to technical malfunction and the decision to hold a high-level Court of Inquiry.

Pakistan summoned India's Charged Affaires here on Friday and conveyed its strong protest over the unprovoked violation of its airspace by an Indian missile.

Pakistan's National Security Advisor Moeed Yusuf on Friday questioned India's ability to handle sensitive technologies and said the Indian government did not bother to inform Pakistan about the accidental missile firing incident.

The Foreign Office said the incident raises several fundamental questions regarding security protocols and technical safeguards against accidental or unauthorised missile launch in a nuclearised environment.

"Such a serious matter cannot be addressed with the simplistic explanation proffered by the Indian authorities, it said, adding that some of the questions should be answered.

Indian decision to hold an internal court of inquiry is not sufficient since the missile ended up in Pakistani territory. Pakistan demands a joint probe to accurately establish the facts surrounding the incident, it said.

India must explain the measures and procedures in place to prevent accidental missile launches and the particular circumstances of this incident, the FO said, adding that India must clearly explain the type and specifications of the missile that fell in Pakistani territory.

The Indian missile landed near Mian Chunnu city in Pakistan's Punjab province on Wednesday evening without causing damage to civilian property.

"It is learnt that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident," India's Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Friday.

Pakistan also sought the flight path/trajectory of the accidentally launched missile and how it ultimately turned and entered into Pakistan.

It asked if the missile was equipped with a self-destruct mechanism and why it failed to actualise.

It asked if the missile was equipped with a self-destruct mechanism and why it failed to actualise. It further asked India if its missiles were kept primed for launch even under routine maintenance. "Students, this is perhaps one of the happiest moments of in my life. Because I finally see all of you safe and sound."

These emotional words from Indian Envoy to Ukraine Partha Satpathy while addressing Indian students well encapsulated the trials and tribulations of evacuation from Sumy.

Indian authorities on Tuesday were able to evacuate over 500 Indian students from the besieged city of Sumy in Ukraine which was the most challenging of all evacuations under Operation Ganga. Under operation Ganga, India has been able to bring back over 18000 of its citizens from the war-torn country in special flights.

Speaking to Indian students at Lviv railway station, the Indian envoy said, "what I wanted to share with you, it has been difficult for all of you, 7-8 days in the bunker, but it has been equally difficult for all of us, who have been trying to get you out."

The Indian students will now travel to Poland from where they will be brought back to India. Sharing a personal anecdote, envoy Satpathy said, "The only message I have, when I would feel really difficult, how to get my boys out, my daughter will call me and say, Papa, think that I am there with them. This believe me is the attitude all of us have worked in the embassy, we all believed our children are out there"

The Indian students in Sumy have been in dire conditions for days as the shelling of the city continued. Earlier this week, the Russians and the Ukrainians agreed on a humanitarian corridor that led to evacuation of Indian students. The Indian envoy had earlier met Governor of Lviv Maksym Kozytskyi and the Mayor of Lviv City Andriy Sadovyi.

During his address at the railway station, envoy lauded the role played by Ukrainian authorities and said, "I have just one request for all of you, this has been a very difficult time for people of Ukraine too. They have helped you, railways has helped you, the border point will help you. Please be patient, and appreciate what they have done".

India was in touch with both Kyiv and Moscow for safe evacuation of Indian nationals. The envoy also had a message for parents, in which he said, "We promised to bring every Indian back, this was the PM's direct objective. Get every Indian back. This is what we have done, and I am so happy you will be all with your parents."

'Happiest day of my life': Indian envoy in Ukraine Satpathy to evacuated students from Sumy

Slovak Republic's state secretary Martin Klus has said that cooperation with India will continue amid the Ukraine war while emphasising on the role played by his country in the evacuation of many Indians.

Many Indians were evacuated from the Slovak Republic as they crossed over from war-torn Ukraine.

Speaking to WION’s Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal, state secretary of the ministry of foreign and European affairs of the Slovak Republic, Klus said, “Slovakia has taken extraordinary measures to facilitate the entry of Indian nationals who were fleeing Ukraine. We have also extended maximum support to all repatriated Indians from Slovakia in the last few days. "

Slovakia, along with Poland, Romania, Hungary and Moldova, has played a key role in housing stranded Indians. Under India's ‘Operation Ganga’, ministerial-level envoy Kiren Rijiju was sent to oversee the evacuation from Slovakia, and PM Modi held talks with Slovakia's PM Heger.

Over 20,000 Indians have left Ukraine since the Russian invasion of the country that started in February.

On the Russian invasion, Klus, who is one of the top diplomats of the country, said, "We are facing the greatest security crisis in decades. The threat to Ukraine is a threat to Europe. The unity of the West is of utmost importance. It makes the Russian regime increasingly nervous when considering the calibration of our response towards Russia – the interruption/termination of cooperation."

WION: How is Slovakia helping in the evacuation of Indian citizens from Ukraine?

Martin Klus: The Slovak Republic allows entry to all nationalities coming from Ukraine, even those not complying with entry conditions under regular circumstances. Our ties with India strengthened further recently during the evacuation of Indian nationals from Ukraine via Kosice.

WION: What kind of coordination has been happening between the 2 countries in terms of political engagement in the aftermath of the war?

Martin Klus: There is no particular future scenario in cooperation with India in terms of political engagement in the aftermath of the war. We must cooperate with India now in the war situation.

Slovakia has taken extraordinary measures to facilitate the entry of Indian nationals, fleeing Ukraine. We have also extended maximum support to all repatriated Indians from Slovakia in the last few days. We stand together with India as friends and partners, and we will give continuous support to Indian nationals in the coming days as well.

These assurances were given by our PM E Heger to Indian PM Modi during their telephonic conversation on February 28. On the other hand, we would like to appeal to all countries to engage against the war and support the UN resolutions, reject illegal Russian actions and express support for territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty.

Slovakia and India are both are fully subscribed to the core principles enshrined in the UN Charter, notably the sovereign equality and territorial integrity of States; the inviolability of internationally recognised borders; refraining from the threat or use of force; and the freedom of States to choose or change their own security arrangements.

These principles are neither negotiable nor subject to revision or re-interpretation.

WION: How catastrophic has been the Russian invasion of Ukraine for Europe and your country. Especially in terms of refugee influx in your country?

Martin Klus: We are facing the greatest security crisis in decades. The threat to Ukraine is a threat to Europe. Slovakia strongly condemns the armed attack by the Russian Federation on Ukraine. Russia violated the territorial integrity of sovereign Ukraine. This of course brought war back to Europe and brought back very sad images that we thought were forgotten. I sincerely think that Russia’s aggression created a significant shift in European history.

On the one hand, it not only triggered unity amongst European allies, but it also re-connected the democratic world. On the other hand, Ukraine is our neighbour, and it needs our comprehensive support and full-fledged assistance.

Currently, we are seeing an influx of more than 150 000 refugees at our borders. However, we expect the situation to deteriorate. Slovakia is fully aware of this, and we will deliver. Our government has already approved three packages of military assistance worth €8.7 mn and humanitarian aid. We will continue to do our utmost. A humanitarian disaster in Ukraine must be prevented. This is of key importance.

WION: What efforts Slovakia has been leading to deal with Russia. We have seen sanctions against Putin. How effective they will be?

Martin Klus: The unity of the West is of utmost importance, and it is unprecedented. It works and makes the Russian regime increasingly nervous. When considering the calibration of our response towards Russia – the interruption/termination of cooperation – I understand that when the forest is cut down, branches fly. We have successfully voted against Russia at the UNGA resolution. Russia is still intensively reaching out to countries.

Slovakia was among the countries that appealed to the ICC prosecutor to launch an investigation concerning crimes related to the ongoing conflict. The perpetrators must be brought to justice. We are also imposing heavy and effective sanctions on Russian assets through various European Union mechanisms. I´m very happy that we have targeted not only Russian financial assets, but also persons directly connected to the invasion. Furthermore, we have been able to shut down transmission from Russian channels spreading disinformation and lies.

WION: How do you see the situation panning out? In terms of its impact in the region.

Martin Klus: Right now, all I can say is that it is very hard to make a prediction of Putin´s aggression and plans. Firstly, we are doing our best with offering the best services to refugees coming to Slovakia from Ukraine. We are in full solidarity with Ukrainians, and we hope the senseless aggression will stop as soon as possible.

Secondly, the Russian aggression only reaffirms the importance of strengthening our defence capabilities. The European Parliament has voted to set up a European Defence Fund, and the member states have created the European Peace Facility that is mobilising to provide weapons to Ukraine. In the coming weeks, the European Council will adopt the Strategic Compass. With the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, we must amplify our reflection, adjust our means and anticipate our responses. It is no longer a luxury, it’s an urgent necessity.

Supreme Court of India on Wednesday (March 9) granted bail to convict for the assassination of country's former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. The court granted AG Perarivalan, the convict, a bail noting that he had spent more than 30 years behind bars.

A bench of Justices L. Nageswara Rao and BR Gavai said: "Taking into account, the appellant has spent more than 30 years of incarceration, he is entitled to be released on bail despite vehement opposition of the Additional Solicitor General (representing the Centre), the appellant is directed to be released on bail."

The bench noted during the hearing that decision on Perarivalan's mercy petition had been delated.

It queried Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, representing the Centre, what is the role of the Governor in sending the remission plea to the President, and does the Governor have any independent discretion in a decision taken by the state cabinet.

The bench also noted that there is sufficient material on record in connection with his conduct during imprisonment, along with his educational qualifications.

Perarivalan was represented by senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayan in the apex court. He informed the court that his client was released on parole thrice and there was no complaint regarding his conduct.

The bench also noted the Central government`s submissions that the state government does not have power to take a stand on mercy petition, especially when the death was commuted to life.

Nataraj, opposing bail to Perarivalan, submitted that he has already availed the benefit of a mercy petition once, and his death penalty was commuted to life sentence by the top court in 2014, against the backdrop of delay in considering the mercy petition. He added that his remission application has been submitted before the Governor who, in turn, said the competent authority to decide is the President.

Granting bail to Perarivalan, the bench said it will be subject to the satisfaction of the trial court`s conditions and directed him to report to the local police, during the first week of every month.

In February last year, the Union Home Ministry had informed the Supreme Court that the Tamil Nadu Governor has recorded that the President is the competent authority to deal with the pardon plea of Perarivalan.

Parole to Perarivalan, who has been in jail since his arrest in 1991, was granted and extended by the Tamil Nadu government periodically.

In 2014, the top court had commuted his death penalty, for aiding in making the bomb, which killed Rajiv Gandhi, to life imprisonment on the ground of delay in deciding their mercy petitions.

On various occasions, the Supreme Court had expressed its dissatisfaction over the pendency of the pardon plea of Perarivalan for over two years with the Tamil Nadu Governor. Perarivalan had moved the top court seeking premature release and remit of his sentence. He had also cited the recommendation made by the state government in 2018 for his release.
