Having landed in Sri Lanka on Monday (Jul 22) evening, the visitors were seen sweating out in the humid conditions of Pallekele where they will be based for the T20I series. Players like Rinku Singh, Suryakumar Yadav, Arshdeep Singh and others were seen sweating in the heat as they prepared for the curtain-raiser clash on Saturday. In a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Gambhir could be seen monitoring the players while taking the field.

The T20I series will also mark the start of Suryakumar Yadav’s era as captain having been given the opportunity ahead of Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah in the format. This will also be the first time India will be without both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the T20I format for over a decade. They both however will return for the ODI series having announced T20I retirement after winning the World Cup in June.

After the T20 World Cup in June, both Rohit and Virat announced their retirement from the format for India, but are back in the national side for the ODI series. Rohit will be the team captain while Virat will serve as an important member of the ODI and Test side. However, on Tuesday the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced the team which marked the return of two key players. Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Perera returned missing the former returning to the squad after February 2022 having missed a chunk of white-ball cricket during that period.

Chandimal’s last ODI match was in November 2022, but could now help regain the attention of the selectors ahead of the Champions Trophy, which starts in less than six months. The biggest news however was the selection of Asalanka as the new skipper of the T20I series as tries to fill the shoes of Hasaranga who led the side during the poor T20 World Cup campaign. Asalanka was the likely choice of the selectors having been with the team for the last few years. Interestingly, there was no place for former captain Angelo Matthews having been overlooked for white-ball cricket yet again.

According to reports, his white-ball career is all but over with him being only considered for the Test series.

Indian Army on Friday (Jul 19) stated that two terrorists killed recently in the Keran sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district, along the Line of Control (LoC), were foreigners.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The terrorists were neutralised on Thursday (Jul 18) around noon when the troops observed them through thick&nbsp;foliage on the Indian side of LoC.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“On 17 July, a credible input was received from JKP, further corroborated by intelligence agencies, regarding a group of foreign terrorists likely to infiltrate through Keran Sector," an army spokesman said.&nbsp;

After spotting the rogue elements, shots were fired&nbsp;between the two sides, leading to an intense fight. Two terrorists were killed as the army recovered weapons and a Pakistani identity card from them.&nbsp;

“This was the third such successful anti infiltration operation on the Line of Control over the last few weeks and underscores the Indian Army’s unwavering commitment to maintain the sanctity of the Line of Control and the robust counter-infiltration posture towards maintaining peace in Kashmir Valley,” the spokesman added.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to Jammu and Kashmir Police, there are around 70 to 80 active foreign terrorists in the Union Territory and a fresh batch of 25-20 terrorists have recently infiltrated the region.&nbsp;

Up until a few years ago, terrorists targeted Kashmir Valley and made it the epicentre of their terror operations. However, they had seemingly changed their strategy now by making Jammu a hub of their activities.&nbsp;

On Thursday, a live grenade was found on the rooftop of a government building in the Poonch district. A bomb disposal squad was called after the bomb's discovery triggered panic and fear among residents of the government quarters.&nbsp;

"My kids kept telling me that something was on the terrace and when I went to check, I saw that an object was lying in the corner. My younger son said that he found the object suspicious," a resident of Gulfam told news agency PTI.

The security agencies suspect that the grenade was thrown by a terrorist which fortunately did not explode. The bomb disposal experts defused the grenade while an investigation was&nbsp;launched into the matter.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A bomb disposal squad was called after the bomb's discovery triggered panic and fear among residents of the government quarters. "My kids kept telling me that something was on the terrace and when I went to check, I saw that an object was lying in the corner. My younger son said that he found the object suspicious," a resident of Gulfam told news agency PTI. The security agencies suspect that the grenade was thrown by a terrorist which fortunately did not explode.
