"The same train will continue," Suryakumar said in the pre-match press conference. "Only the engine has changed. The bogies (carriages) are the same."

"It's now been 10 years since we've been working together, even though I went into a different franchise in 2018 and he also went to another. We used to keep in touch, talk about the game, even if we were on different teams. There have been learnings in the last six years too when I was not with him,” Suryakumar added.

This will be India’s second series without senior guns like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja who all announced their retirement from the format after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup. The Men in Blue will be looking to start a fresh cycle under the leadership of Suryakumar who has been an ever-present in the T20I squad for India.

Interestingly, despite being named as the captain of the T20I squad, there is no place for Suryakumar Yadav in the ODI squad while Hardik Pandya also faces an axe in the format. They both still have a pivotal role to play in the T20I set-up but are unlikely to be involved in the ODI set-up, meaning they are unlikely to be considered for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
