Having landed in Sri Lanka on Monday (Jul 22) evening, the visitors were seen sweating out in the humid conditions of Pallekele where they will be based for the T20I series. Players like Rinku Singh, Suryakumar Yadav, Arshdeep Singh and others were seen sweating in the heat as they prepared for the curtain-raiser clash on Saturday. In a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Gambhir could be seen monitoring the players while taking the field.
The T20I series will also mark the start of Suryakumar Yadav’s era as captain having been given the opportunity ahead of Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah in the format. This will also be the first time India will be without both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the T20I format for over a decade. They both however will return for the ODI series having announced T20I retirement after winning the World Cup in June.

Gambhir’s selection choice will be interesting for Saturday’s opener with Shubman Gill set to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal who was unused during the T20 World Cup. Interestingly, despite promotion to the captain’s role in the T20I format, Suryakumar has not been included in the ODI series which starts in the first week of August.
