Former United States President Donald Trump and his attorneys were ordered to pay more than $937,000 in sanctions for suing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over disputed assertions that the 2016 presidential elections were rigged.&nbsp;A US&nbsp;district judge John Middlebrooks, who discarded Trump’s lawsuit in September, said the sanctions were warranted because the former president had shown a pattern of misusing the courts to further his political agenda.

Intended for a political purpose, none of the counts of the amended complaint stated a cognizable legal claim," Middlebrooks wrote in the 45-page written ruling, Reuters reported.

The judge also noted that a number of allegations made by Trump in the lawsuit were exemplifying ‘abusive litigation tactics’.&nbsp; 
 
"I find that the pleadings here were abusive litigation tactics. The complaint and amended complaint were drafted to advance a political narrative; not to address legal harm caused by any defendant," Middlebrooks wrote of Trump’s lawsuit.

Trump sued Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, claiming that she and other Democrats sought to rig that election by accusing his campaign of links to Russia. Trump has repeatedly called the accusation to be false.&nbsp;

Middlebrooks had dismissed the case in September, calling the lawsuit “a two-hundred-page political manifesto outlining his grievances against those that have opposed him”.

Donald Trump, a Republican, sought re-election in 2020 but was defeated by Democrat Joe Biden, after which he repeatedly made false claims blaming widespread voting fraud for his loss.

Trump has launched a run for the 2024 presidential election, setting up a potential rematch against Biden to reclaim the seat of power in the White House.

One Afghan woman hiding from the Taliban recently spoke to former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton on a podcast show hosted by BBC on women and war called ‘Women Building Peace’.

In the show, she shared what her life used to look like before the Taliban takeover.

“Before Taliban occupation, I had a beautiful life with multiple opportunities. My life was good. I had the right to education and the right to my civil activities. I had the right to work in my country. I had the right to choose my favourite candidates in the presidential election and also in the parliamentary elections. But after Taliban took over, my life completely changed,” said Lama (named changed to protect her identity), who is placed in a safe house after fleeing Kabul.

“My clothing style changed after August 15. I started to wear burka. In short, I couldn’t use my identity. I should always hide my identity,” she added.

In response, Hillary empathised with the woman and promised to put “international pressure” on the Taliban government to have a lenient approach towards women’s education and work.

I will certainly do everything I can to&nbsp; try &nbsp;to provide whatever support, even though it’s from a long distance, that you and other women, particularly young women like yourself, deserve.”

Clinton&nbsp;was admitted on Tuesday evening to the hospital south of Los Angeles with a non-Covid-related blood infection.

The New York Times, quoting an aide, reported Clinton developed a urinary tract infection that turned into sepsis.

Sepsis is an extreme bodily reaction to infection that affects 1.7 million people in America annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It kills 270,000 of those infected every year.

The infection was the latest health scare for America's 42nd president. In 2004, at age 58, he underwent a quadruple bypass operation after doctors found signs of extensive heart disease.

Six years later he had stents implanted in his coronary artery.

This prompted him to adopt a vegetarian diet and to speak out publicly about how his change in food consumption helped him get healthier.

"Maybe if I had... not eaten so many hamburgers and steaks, which I love, maybe if I had, you know, had slightly less stress in my life... maybe it would have been different," Clinton told ABC News in 2004 after his successful heart surgery.

In the two decades since leaving the White House after two presidential terms he has thrown himself into numerous humanitarian and diplomatic causes.

He traveled the world, not just to receive generous speaking fees and to attend conferences but to visit disaster areas or raise funds for the fight against AIDS.

Ellis, a 42-year-old elementary school teacher, lived a quiet life in the Vermont town of Essex Junction,&nbsp;until Wednesday.

She was teaching a class online like any other day, as Biden was being sworn in when her phone started pinging with texts.

The messages were all the same, Ellis said&nbsp;via a video interview: "Bernie&nbsp;Sanders is wearing your mittens!"

Not your typical hand warmers, they are made from repurposed wool sweaters and fleece made from recycled plastic bottles for the inside lining.

The ones Sanders wore are big and thick and in shades of brown and beige. And they have story behind them.

Ellis, a fan of Sanders, sent him a pair of mittens after he lost to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary, as a consolation gift.

She learned through a common acquaintance that Sanders liked the mittens.&nbsp;

Last year, as Sanders was running again for president, Ellis learned that he was wearing the mittens, "people were calling them his oven mitts", but had lent them to someone else.

Ellis said she was so touched by this that she sent Sanders another 10 pairs.

That earned her a buzz of notoriety but it was nothing compared with the fuss since the inauguration when people saw Sanders wearing the mittens.&nbsp;

And Sanders's overall look, in a frumpy winter coat, his legs crossed, no glamour whatsoever, prompted a gush of light-hearted memes.

Ellis' phone will not stop ringing and her email inbox is exploding.

One of the memes placed Sanders on a bench next to Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump", another put him in detention with the teenagers from "The Breakfast Club" and he also made it into numerous "Star Wars" scenes.

"I mean, people are so funny. And that's what we need right now: it's a very tough time for a lot of people, people have had a rough year, and they need something to laugh about that's totally harmless and not political," Ellis said.

"The thing that I wish for everybody is more joy," she added. "And you know, if you have something and you give it away, and it brings somebody joy and then it blows up and the entire world experiences joy, that's amazing."

Ellis could make a lot of money because in two days she says she has received around 13,000 emails from people who want to buy her mittens.

"Not just one pair,&nbsp;people want lots of them," she said.

But she could never satisfy that demand, with her 30-year-old sewing machine, and her job as a second-grade teacher. And she does not even want to.

"I think it would just ruin the beauty of it if I started price gouging people," she said.

She prefers to spend time with her family, including her five-year-old daughter.

And if others are out there selling mittens on the internet, she wishes them well.

On Friday, some websites were advertising mittens they said were identical to Ellis's creation, for $85 a pair.

"Michigan is your got-to-win state," said Adam Hollier, an African-American state senator from Detroit who is backing Biden.

Biden parlayed his popularity with black voters into huge gains on Super Tuesday, winning 70% of African-American voters in Alabama and Virginia and 60% in North Carolina and Texas, according to exit polls from Edison Research.

They will be crucial in Michigan, where they comprise almost 14% of the population. Some areas of Detroit are 80% African-American.

"When you look at what he did all across the South, those same demographics are going to be at play in Detroit," Hollier said.

Sanders cancelled plans to campaign in Mississippi this weekend, focusing instead on Michigan.

UNION LABELS

Sanders may have better luck with union voters in manufacturing-heavy Michigan. He won the state's white working-class voters in 2016, and they remain a reliable part of his base.

Richard Cassel, 28, lost his job as an auto engineer in Detroit last month. That same week, he walked into a Sanders campaign office and volunteered to work the phones.

"For me, Biden is just more of the same. The middle class is working professionals, and everyone else is slowly drowning," Cassel said.

But Biden has long-standing ties to labour unions and routinely talks about how the middle-class and union members built the nation.

The powerful United Auto Workers Union has yet to endorse any candidate, but its spokesman, Brian Rothenberg, said it supports the idea of universal healthcare. Sanders has made a government-run healthcare system, Medicare for All, the heart of his campaign.

"The high cost of healthcare is one of the impacts when you're bargaining, so universal healthcare would actually give you a better ability to bargain at the table," Rothenberg said.

Not all of Sanders' positions play well with the state's unions, though. In particular, he has called for the closure of a 66-year-old crude oil pipeline that runs below portions of the Great Lakes, as part of his sweeping plan to swiftly end the U.S. fossil fuel economy to fight climate change.

"It's going to cost (Sanders) a lot of support in our union," said Terry Gilligan, business manager of Detroit Pipefitters Local 636.

And two Michigan chapters of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union endorsed Biden on Friday.

Sanders is running ads in Michigan criticizing Biden over his past support for global trade deals such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Biden, in turn, argues that he was a key player in the 2009 auto industry bailout that rescued jobs in the state.

RURAL RUN

In 2016, Sanders performed surprisingly well in the wealthy suburbs outside Detroit and blew Clinton away in rural counties. But there is evidence he won’t do that again this time.

On Super Tuesday, Biden consistently beat Sanders in suburbs outside of cities including Charlotte, North Carolina, and Houston.

And in rural regions of Minnesota, a Midwestern state like Michigan with a largely white population, Biden smashed Sanders, 43% to 19%, according to exit polls.

This weekend, Biden's campaign will deploy former presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar, a senator from Minnesota, to stump in Grand Rapids – and area that Sanders won in 2016.

Dawn Bryant, 40, a General Motors Co &lt;GM.N&gt; factory worker who was laid off earlier this year, said she was torn between Sanders and Biden.

"I'm divided. I'm not sure. I'm going to keep watching and weighing my options on both of the candidates," she said. "It's a tough, tough call."
