After the disappointment endured in the T20 World Cup, Team India has now started preparations for the 2023 ODI World Cup. After the T20 WC, regular captain Rohit Sharma missed the New Zealand tour whereas head coach Rahul Dravid was also rested. Thus, Shikhar Dhawan led in the ODIs whereas Hardik Pandya took charge of the T20I side.

Since the T20 WC debacle, many have spoken about the need for split captaincy with too much cricket being played. Moreover, there have been talks about having different coaches for different formats. England already have Brendon McCullum as their Test coach whereas Matthew Mott serves as the white-ball coach. In this regard, former Indian cricketer Hemang Badani feels such a change is surely on the cards in the Indian team.

Badani told Times Now, "I am of the opinion that both will happen in time for sure and it should happen. The skillset that a coach is required to have for different formats is not the same. The way you handle a T20 side to the way you handle and prepare for an ODI, or for Test format, is a lot different. I am all for that to happen in the future. Be it captaincy, be it coaching."

Dravid took over as the Indian team head coach after Ravi Shastri post the 2021 T20 WC in the UAE. Under Rohit and him, India have been pretty average. While they have dominated at home, beating New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia and South Africa, they failed to win a Test series in SA, beat England in a one-off Test in Edgbaston, failed to qualify for the Asia Cup final and bowed out of the T20 WC semi-finals.

With questions rising over Rohit Sharma's captaincy, former Indian cricketer Maninder Singh has opined that Shreyas Iyer may be the right candidate to take over from Sharma in the white-ball format.

"I've been saying this for the past three-four years, you know Shreyas Iyer is my favourite," said Singh in an interview with Hindustan Times.

Maninder added that Hardik Pandya can be the stop-gap captain but it should be Iyer that should take the reins in the future.

"For me, I still feel, I've said it earlier Hardik Pandya at the moment - you can make him the captain in white-ball cricket. Former Indian cricketer lends his weight behind Shreyas Iyer as the next white ball captain

After Team India's T20 World Cup 2022 debacle, there were strong rumours of significant changes set to take place in the T20I line-up. With the national side set to focus on the 2023 ODI World Cup and with the second cycle of ICC World Test Championship also going on, many senior players will now shift their focus on the longer formats and reportedly Hardik Pandya is set to take charge of the T20I side.

As per a report in the PTI, BCCI is likely to give the T20I captaincy to Hardik Pandya for a longer duration with the senior players, such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and the likes, set to focus on ODIs and Tests. It added that while the board won't push any senior player towards retirement from T20Is, a fresh team is likely to be given to Hardik.

"The BCCI never asks anyone to retire. It is an individual decision. But yes, with just a handful of T20Is scheduled in 2023, most of the seniors will concentrate on ODIs and Test matches in that cycle," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"You don't need to announce retirement if you don't want to. You will not see most of the seniors playing T20 next year," the source added. Thus, this can mean the end of the road for Rohit, Kohli in the shortest format.

India Vs New Zealand 2nd ODI: Live Cricket Streaming-OTT and Broadcast TV Channel, weather update and line-ups

New Zealand and India will square off in the third and final T20I on Tuesday (November 22). The series commenced on Friday (November 18) with the opening clash being abandoned without a ball being bowled due to persistent rain. The action then moved to the second and penultimate encounter, in Mount Maunganui, the spectators and viewers got to witness a full game where Hardik Pandya-led India rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 51-ball 111 not out, laced with 11 fours and 7 sixes, to post a challenging 191 for 6 and defended it with ease; winning by 65 runs after dismissing New Zealand for a below-par 126 in 18.5 overs.

Being asked to bat first, India started the proceedings with a new opening pair in the form of Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant. Many former cricketers had called for Pant to be promoted up the order so that the swashbuckling left-hander can make the most of the powerplays. However, he struggled to get going and only managed a 13-ball 6. Ishan Kishan played some attractive shots before falling for a 30-ball 36 but India's innings were given a much-needed push courtesy of in-form batter Surya. SKY went bonkers in the last few overs and made heads turn with his blazing shots in all parts of the ground to take India to a winning score, despite Tim Southee's hat-trick preventing him from facing the last over completely. In reply, NZ were in the chase till their second-wicket stand but Deepak Hooda's 4 for 10 and two-fers from Yuzvendra Chahal and Md Siraj turned the tides in India's favour completely.

The third and final T20I between India and New Zealand ended in a tie after both sides ended with the same runs at DLS par score on Tuesday evening (November 22). India-New Zealand final T20I tied on DLS par score, Hardik Pandya & Co. win series 1-0

Hardik Pandya has emerged as the favourite to replace Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian cricket team in T20Is after the Men in Blue's disappointing show in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022. India crashed out of the tournament after suffering a humiliating ten-wicket defeat in the semi-final against England.

Rohit Sharma & Co. once again failed to cross the final hurdle in a major ICC tournament, extending their trophy drought. Ever since the team's exit, questions have been raised on the future of some of the senior players with Rohit's captaincy also coming under the scanner.

While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already sacked the entire selection panel led by former India cricketer Chetan Sharma, Rohit is also reportedly set to face the axe in T20Is. As per reports, BCCI is keen on appointing Hardik Pandya as the captain of India's T20I team keeping the future in mind.

While many have backed Pandya to lead the Indian team in the shortest format, former Pakistan team captain Salman Butt is far from convinced of his leadership qualities. Don't know who is seeing Hardik Pandya as captain: Ex-Pakistan skipper urges India to not sack Rohit Sharma

India is gearing up for their upcoming three-match T20I series versus New Zealand, starting on November 18. In the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya is set to captain India in the T20I series. While Rohit will return for the Bangladesh tour, former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels Hitman can continue to lead in Tests and ODIs whereas the national side can have a separate T20I captain given the amount of cricket being played in a calendar year.

During a select media call organised by Prime Video, Shastri opined, "For T20 cricket, there is no harm in having a new captain. Because the volume of cricket is such that for one player, to play all three formats of the game is never going to be easy. If Rohit is already leading in Tests and ODIs, there is no harm in identifying a new T20I captain and if his name is Hardik Pandya, so be it."

'What do you need that many breaks for' - Shastri not in favour of Dravid being granted frequent rests

India's stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya said the team doesn't need to prove anything to anyone while responding to Michael Vaughan's criticism of the Men in Blue. The former England captain labelled India as the most underperforming team in white-ball cricket after their disappointing loss against England in the semi-final of the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2022.

India were the table-toppers in Group 2 in the Super 12 stage being the only team to have won four out of their five matches but failed to cross the final hurdle in the semi-finals. Rohit Sharma & Co. suffered a crushing 10-wicket defeat in the semi-final against England where they failed to defend a total of 178 runs.

In his column for The Telegraph, Vaughan criticised India's approach in white-ball cricket and said the talent their performances on the pitch don't justify the kind of talent they have at their disposal. The former England captain urged India to take inspiration from England's white-ball template while calling them the biggest underperformers.

"India are the most underperforming white-ball team in history. I am just staggered by how they play T20 cricket for the talent they have. They have the players, but just do not have the right process in place. They have to go for it. Why do they give the opposition bowlers the first five overs to bed in," Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

Hardik was recently asked about Vaughan's comments during the pre-match press conference ahead of the start of the T20I series between India and New Zealand. The stand-in skipper said the team is aware that there is room for improvement but they don't need to prove anything to anyone.

"Obviously when you don't do well, people will have their opinion, which we respect. I understand people have different points of view. India's stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya said the team doesn't need to prove anything to anyone while responding to Michael Vaughan's criticism of the Men in Blue.

The stand-in skipper said the team is aware that there is room for improvement but they don't need to prove anything to anyone. "Obviously when you don't do well, people will have their opinion, which we respect. I understand people have different points of view. Being at the international level, I don't think we need to prove anything to anyone. It's a sport, you keep trying to get better and eventually when the result is supposed to happen it will happen. Don't need to prove anything: Hardik Pandya responds to Michael Vaughan's criticism of Team India

After the disappointments of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, Team India is now gearing up for their upcoming three-match T20I series versus hosts New Zealand. With many regulars not being part of the tour, Hardik Pandya will lead the side with Rishabh Pant as his deputy.

With a semi-final defeat in the recently-concluded T20 WC, in Australia, India will now look to revamp and restart with the next edition of the World Cup to be held in 2024. The NZ series can give a sneak peak into the mindset of the team. With regular skipper Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and others not part of the tour, the young batters are expected to take more responsibility and get more chances at the top order. Amid all this, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa has suggested a new batting slot for Pant.

"The next World Cup is in two years' time. So, keeping the conditions there in mind, I feel Rishabh Pant should bat in the top 3," he told Sportskeeda. "If you look at his IPL records, his best performances have come when he has opened or when he has batted at No. 3. So, you have to give him the opportunity to become a match-winner in that position," he further opined.

'His best performances have...' - Ex-India batter suggests batting spot for Rishabh Pant ahead of NZ T20Is

India's run in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition ended with a heavy defeat at the hands of eventual winners England in the semi-finals. Being asked to bat first, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Rohit Sharma-led India rode on half-centuries from Virat Kohli (40-ball 50) and Hardik Pandya (33-ball 63) to post an at-par total; 168 for 6. Nonetheless, it wasn't enough as England openers Jos Buttler (40-ball 80) and Alex Hales (46-ball 87 not out) chased down the target with an unbeaten 170-run opening stand with four overs to spare.

With this performance, India's T20 WC dreams were shattered and many have raised fingers at the team selection, captaincy and India's playing template in the shortest format. As wholesome changes are expected going ahead, former Indian chief selector and 1983 ODI World Cup-winning member Kris Srikkanth has named his choice on who should lead India in T20Is in the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and USA.

"See if I was the chairman of the selection committee, I would say that Hardik Pandya should be the captain of the 2024 World Cup, straight away, I had put it that way – number one," the former chief selector said in an interaction with Star Sports.

Srikkanth also stressed the fact that India desperately need more fast bowling all-rounders. "You need more fast-ball all-rounders. Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant? Former chief selector names India's captain for 2024 T20 World Cup

After the end of India's T20 World Cup, where they once again faltered in the semi-finals, head coach Rahul Dravid has been rested for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. In his absence, VVS Laxman will take don the coach's hat for the white-ball tour of NZ.

In addition, a PTI report has claimed that the duo of Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Sairaj Bahutule will join the New Zealand-bound squad, taking up the roles of batting and bowling coach respectively. Earlier, Laxman -- who succeeded Dravid as the NCA chief in December 2021 -- served as the interim head coach in Dravid's absence during a second-stringed India's tour of Ireland (comprising two T20Is), three ODIs in Zimbabwe (mid-August) and last month's three-match 50-over series versus South Africa at home. Moreover, India's U-19 team had also won the 2022 ODI World Cup under Laxman's guidance.

Thus, Laxman is all set to take over the head coach's position in the absence of his former teammate Dravid. The latter has had a busy few months and has been given some break post India's ten-wicket loss to England in the second semi-final of the ongoing T20 WC in Australia.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya will lead the T20I line-up in the three-match series versus Kane Williamson's Black Caps, starting on November 18. Shikhar Dhawan will captain India in the following three ODIs during the NZ tour.

Dravid is expected to return for India's tour of Bangladesh, in December, comprising two Tests and three ODIs.

T20 WC 2022: Virat Kohli becomes first player to achieve unique feat during IND-ENG semi-final

England rode on some good bowling from Chris Woakes (1 for 24), Adil Rashid (1 for 20), and Chris Jordan's 3 for 43 to restrict India to 168 for 6 in 20 overs in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, on Thursday (November 10). He returned for a 33-ball 63 whereas Kohli made a 40-ball 50 but India's 168/6 just wasn't enough on the day. Now, Pakistan and England will lock horns in the T20 WC 2022 final at the MCG, Melbourne on Sunday (November 13).

Is it a bird... is it a plane? Kagiso Rabada takes stunner to dismiss Hardik Pandya in T20WC - Watch

India and Pakistan produced a humdinger of a clash when they locked horns in the Super 12 round of the Men's T20 World Cup (T20 WC) on Sunday (October 23), at the iconic MCG, Melbourne. Bowling first, India restriced Pakistan for 159-8 riding on three-wicket hauls from Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya.

In reply, India were on the back foot and tottering at 31 for 4. Virat Kohli (82 not out) and Hardik (37-ball 40) revived the run-chase with an impressive 113-run fifth-wicket stand before the last over started with India needing 16 for a win. Hardik fell and Dinesh Karthik also returned back to the pavillion, with India requiring two from the final delivery.

R Ashwin came out in the middle. Holding his nerves, Ashwin confidently left a delivery from Md Nawaz, which was called a wide to level the scores. After that, he smacked a four on the last ball of the contest to take India to a famous four-wicket win at the jam-packed stadium.

Recalling that Nawaz delivery which was a wide, Ashwin hilariously stated on BCCI.TV during an interaction with Hrishikesh Kanitkar, "If that ball of Nawaz turned and hit my pad then only one thing I do was back to dressing room and picked my Twitter and write 'Thank you so much, It was wonderful my cricketing career and Journey and thank you all (laughs)'."

Team India started their T20 World Cup 2022 edition with a memorable win over arch-rivals Pakistan at the iconic MCG, Melbourne on Sunday (October 23). Having won the toss and opting to bowl first, India rode on three-fers from Arshdeep Singh and all-rounder Hardik Pandya to restrict Pakistan to 159 for 8.

In reply, India were tottering at 31 for 4, losing their skipper Rohit Sharma (4) and vice-captain KL Rahul for cheap. However, Virat Kohli produced a masterclass, 82 not out off 53 balls, and was well-supported by Hardik (40) to take India past the finish line courtesy of a four from R Ashwin's blade on the last ball of the contest. Now, the action shifts to the Netherlands face-off as India will aim to keep their winning streak alive.

India will take on the Dutch line-up, at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney. This will be the first face-off between both sides in the format. So far, India have faced Netherlands twice in ODI World Cup -- in 2003 and 2011. Hence, a new challenge will be infront of the Indian team when they take the field versus the Netherlands line-up.

Given Ireland stunned 2010 winners England on Wednesday (October 26), India won't take the Netherlands lightly. With no experience of playing them whatsoever in the format, India will start cautiously before trying to explode. As per the conditions, a used pitch will be on offer for the India-Dutch encounter, given it is the second encounter of the day (after South Africa vs Bangladesh). A similar sort of pitch can be expected, as it was in the Super 12 opener featuring Australia and New Zealand, but with lesser bounce. Thus, slower bowlers can come to play. Toss will be crucial and the captains can look to bat first, on a surface which might get slower. However, with rain forecast, bowling first is also an option.

Team India at T20 World Cup 2022: Squad, schedule, timings - Everything you need to know

It has been over a month since Deepti Sharma ran Charlie Dean out, at the non-striker's end, as the batter was taking unfair advantage for backing up too far. Since then, Deepti's act has been talked about a lot and has led to divided opinions. While many have backed and lauded Deepti, and fairly blamed Charlie, the English and Aussie cricketers refrain from considering it as a legitimate form of dismissal -- although the International Cricket Council (ICC) and MCC have included it to the run-out law from unfair play -- all-rounder Hardik Pandya joined the bandwagon and shared a strong response in this regard.

Speaking on the latest episode of ICC Review podcast, the 28-year-old Hardik said, "Because you gave the example, we need to stop making a fuss about this. It's a rule, simple as that. To hell with the Spirit of the Game, if it's there, remove the rules, simple as that. The ones who have problems, good for them, that's fine."

'To hell with the Spirit of the Game': Hardik Pandya shares his take on run out at non-striker's end

Team India pulled off a heist versus Pakistan in an epic Super 12 clash at the T20 World Cup on Sunday (October 23) at the iconic and jam-packed MCG, Melbourne. In pursuit of 160, India were on the back foot and reeling at 31 for 4 before Virat Kohli-Hardik Pandya stitched an impressive 113-run fifth-wicket stand which revived the run-chase and took their side past the finish line, by four wickets, on the last ball of the contest.

Kohli-Hardik joined in, and rotated the strike before both accelerated and set the stage for a thrilling finish.

With 48 needed off 18, India brought down the equation to 16 off six balls. The last over, bowled by Md Nawaz, comprised two wides, free-hit, six off a waist-high delivery, no-ball, and two wickets falling before R Ashwin smacked a four on the last ball to take India home. Thus, emotions were running away in the middle and even at the stands -- filled with supporters from both sides.

Pointing out his leadership skills in IPL where he led Gujarat Titans to a title triumph earlier this year, Akram said Hardik is mentally strong and knows how to deal with pressure. “Hardik Pandya has captained for the first time in the IPL and led his team to the title,” said Akram. "He knows how to handle the pressure. He has the finisher's role in the team and you can be a finisher only when you are mentally strong and have self-belief. He knows how to read the game and take it deep," he added. Younis agreed with Akram and said he wouldn't be surprised if Hardik is made the captain of the Indian team after Rohit. “I won’t be surprised if he is the next Indian captain," said Younis. Kohli had revealed after his enthralling knock that it was Hardik who kept speaking to him and asked him to take the game deep. The senior batter said Hardik always believed he could chase it down if the game went down the wire. With 16 runs to get off the final over, India had a poor start but luck favoured the brave as they managed to get over the line. T20 WC: Hardik Pandya reveals text he sent to his family before Indo-Pak clash at the MCG

Virat Kohli produced another masterclass while chasing as India beat Pakistan by four wickets in a thrilling Super 12 clash at the T20 World Cup 2022 edition. Playing at the iconic MCG, Melbourne, India asked Pakistan to bat first and restricted them to 159-8. In reply, India were 31 for 4 before Kohli's 82 not out, along with Hardik Pandya's 37-ball 40, propelled India to a four-wicket win on the last ball of the run-chase.

Kohli, at No. 3, joined the run-chase with KL Rahul being out for 4. Soon, skipper Rohit Sharma also joined Rahul back in the pavillion and India were reduced to 31 for 4. Hardik-Kohli stitched a 113-run fifth-wicket stand and took the game deeper. While Hardik was the aggressor at the start, he somehow fell behind but Kohli timed his acceleration and played some unbelievable shots at the backend of the innings to take India to a stunning win.

Kohli was adjudged the Player-of-the-Match for his breathtaking 53-ball unbeaten 82, lacked with 6 fours and 4 sixes. At first, he was struggling and started slowly as he was 12 off 21 balls. Nonetheless, he attacked the likes of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf (Pakistan's best bowler of the evening) and Md Nawaz to help India open its account in the tournament, in Australia.

Speaking to Star Sports after the match, Kohli recalled his initial struggles and said, "Honestly, I was feeling a lot of pressure at that stage. But then when he came in and he hit a few boundaries, I kind of opened up. That partnership, we didn't even realise when we got to our 100. We kept talking, we kept running hard and kept watching their body language. We knew it would turn at some stage, it turned quite late to be honest. We would have liked to do it earlier."

"All these things look great at the end, to be honest. When I was 12 of 21, I was like 'I am really messing this game up. I am not putting ball in the gaps'. But when you have experience and understand the value of batting deep, that's always been my role-playing for India. I know that I can do a lot of the power-hitting towards the end of the innings," the former captain asserted.

'When I was 12 of 21...' - Virat Kohli thought he was 'messing the game up' during MCG blitz vs Pakistan

After much hullabaloo, India and Pakistan squared off in the fourth game of the Super 12 clash at the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, on Sunday afternoon (October 23). Playing in front of a jam-packed Melbourne Cricket Stadium, Melbourne, the clash was a humdinger which saw Rohit Sharma-led India beat Pakistan by four wickets in a last-over thriller, courtesy of Virat Kohli's majestic 82 not out.

Opting to bowl first, India was off to a good start. The opening bowlers, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh got some movement and bounce and curtailed the run-flow. As a result, Pakistan captain Babar Azam shuffled off Arshdeep but was trapped lbw, after missing the ball completely, to be out for a golden duck. Rizwan also followed suit, surprised by a well-executed short ball from Arshdeep (3 for 32).

Shan Masood steadied the ship after the fall of the Pakistani openers. Iftikhar Ahmed, on the other hand, took on Axar Patel and went bonkers with some lusty blows. With Iftikhar adding some vital runs, Rohit brought Md Shami back into the attack and he dismissed him for a 34-ball 51. From thereon, some vital blows from Shaheen Afridi (8-ball 16) and Masood's cautious 42-ball 52 not out took Pakistan to a competitive 159 for 8 in 20 overs. Apart from Arshdeep, Hardik also impressed and returned with 3 for 30.

In reply, Indian openers were tentative and dismissed for cheap inside the powerplay overs. KL Rahul chopped it onto the stumps, off Naseem shah, whereas Haris Rauf removed Rohit for 4. In-form batter Suryakumar Yadav showed a lot of promise and took the scoreboard forward with some confident strokes before falling for 15, off Rauf. After being promoted to No. 5, Axar Patel was involved in a mix-up with Kohli and luck favoured the Men in Green as he was run out for 2.

From thereon, Hardik (40 off 37) joined Kohli as the duo stitched an impressive 113-run fifth-wicket stand. While Hardik slowed down as the partnership progressed, however, Kohli -- who has an impeccable record versus Pakistan in T20 WC history -- took on the likes of Shadab Khan, Shaheen, and Md Nawaz to keep India in the hunt.

With 48 needed off 18, Kohli's timely hits brought the equation down to 16 off 6 balls. There was a lot of drama with a wicket, waist-high delivery (which went for a six), a no-ball, a free-hit, etc. bringing down the equation to two off an equal number of balls.

Dinesh Karthik faced the penultimate ball but was stumped out. Eventually, R Ashwin came out to face the last ball. Nawaz bowled a wide before Ashwin struck a boundary to take India home in what was a riveting clash. In an epic thriller, India beat Pakistan by four wickets to open its account in the ongoing T20 WC with a memorable victory.

Kohli's 82 not out, off 53 balls, was laced with 6 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 154.72. He returned with the Player-of-the-Match award.

T20 WC: UNBELIEVABLE! Head coach Rahul Dravid goes bonkers after India's epic win over Pakistan - Watch

India were tottering at 31 for 4, in pursuit of 160, in their T20 World Cup opener versus Pakistan at the MCG, Melbourne on Sunday (October 23). After opting to bowl first, Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue restricted Pakistan to 159-8 but found them way behind at the halfway mark, with 115 to get off 60 balls.

Nonetheless, Virat Kohli was joined by all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who instilled a lot of belief in their 113-run fifth-wicket partnership and played the aggressor's role. While Hardik did slow down a bit towards the end overs, Kohli took the mantle and pressed the accelerator with his timely and unbelievable strokes, taking on Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, etc., to take India past the finish line in a thrilling last-over run-chase.

Hardik was dismissed for 40 (37) but Kohli kept his cool and ended the run-chase for India, with R Ashwin hitting the winning shot on the final ball of the contest. After the riveting encounter, at the MCG, Melbourne, Kohli and Hardik got together and relived their match-winning stand.

"I would have taken a bullet for you at that point of time, but I would not have let you get out. My goal was simple, whatever I can do to make your life easier, I'll do it. You have done it so many times and no one is better at handling pressure than you," said Hardik in a video posted by BCCI.

'I'd have taken a bullet for you but not have...': Hardik Pandya tells Virat Kohli after duo's MCG heroics

The D-day has finally arrived. India and Pakistan are set to meet in the Super 12 round of the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 edition, at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne on Sunday afternoon (October 23). This will be the second clash of the day, with Ireland-Sri Lanka face-off at Hobart being the first encounter.

India and Pakistan do not meet in bilaterals ever since the strained political relations between both sides. Hence, both the sides now only square off during multi-nation or ICC events. Thus, the clash becomes even more special for cricket lovers from both countries. This year, India and Pakistan have already met twice, during the 2022 Asia Cup. Back then, both teams won and lost a game each.

During their last T20 WC face-off, India lost their first-ever World Cup game to their arch-rivals Pakistan. Babar Azam-led Men in Green rode on Shaheen Afridi's 3/31 and unbeaten half-centuries from Babar-Md Rizwan to thrash India by ten wickets. Since then, India have revamped their T20I playing style and have enjoyed considerable success in the format in 2022.

India vs Pakistan, T20 WC 2022: Predicting Rohit Sharma & Co.'s likely playing XI for high-voltage clash

There was drama, there was thrill and emotions peaked in the final over as India and Pakistan played out an absolute nail-biter at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in their T20 World Cup 2022 opener on Sunday. Virat Kohli produced yet another chasing masterclass as India clinched the last-ball thriller by four wickets to get off to a winning start in the tournament.

Kohli was the main architect of India's famous victory as he played one of the best knocks of his career so far. Kohli was just 11 off 20 balls when India were reeling in a spot of bother having lost as many as four wickets with just 31 runs on the board in the tricky chase of 160 runs.

However, the king proved why he is regarded as one of the greatest of all time by taking India home in a sensational manner. Kohli ended up scoring as many as 71 runs off his next 33 balls to keep India in the hunt till the end and help them pull off an improbable victory in the high-pressure chase.

Kohli began the real onslaught in the 18th over where he took Shaheen Afridi to the cleaners with three fours before smashing Haris Rauf for back-t-back sixes in the penultimate over to bring the equation down to 16 required off the last over. However, what unfolded in the final over kept the fans and the players on the edge as India secured a dramatic win on the last ball.

With 16 to get, Hardik was sent back by Mohammad Nawaz on the first ball as he miscued his shot and was caught by Babar Azam. Dinesh Karthik, who is India's designated finisher in the tournament, arrived in the middle with a perfect situation for him to shine and prove his critics wrong.

However, Karthik could only manage a single off the next ball before Kohli converted a single into two on the third delivery to reduce the equation to 13 needed off the last three balls. Kohli smacked a high full-toss from Nawaz for a huge six next and luck favoured India as it turned out to be a waist-height no-ball.

With the equation now down to 6 needed off the final three deliveries, Kohli was clean-bowled on the free-hit delivery. However, India managed to sneak three runs in byes to leave two to get off the last two balls. Just when it seemed, India had it in their bag after pulling off the unthinkable on the first four balls, Karthik was stumped by Rizwan on the penultimate delivery as more drama unfolded at the SCG.

R Ashwin arrived in the middle with India needing two off the last ball with Pakistan once again favourites. However, Nawaz ended up bowling a wide ball under pressure and Ashwin did well to leave it and tie the scores.

With millions around the globe glued to their TV screens and the spotlight on Ashwin, he nonchalantly lofted the final delivery for a single to wrap up a thrilling victory for India after a nerve-wracking last over. Following the winning run, a pumped-up Kohli punched the ground after letting his emotions flow and was later lifted and hugged by his teammates.

With his knock, Kohli also went past Rohit Sharma to become the leading run-getter in T20Is and will be hoping to continue his purple patch when India take on Netherlands in their next Super 12 clash on Thursday (October 27).
