Ever since India lost the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals, versus eventual winners England, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not featured in India's T20I squad. While nothing official has been announced regarding Rohit and Kohli's T20I future, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer recently shared a bold prediction with regard to the two stalwarts of Indian cricket.

Jaffer believes that the 34-year-old Kohli might still have a chance to play in the 2024 T20 World Cup, but insisted that doors for a comeback are more or less closed for Rohit.Speaking after India's recent T20I series win over New Zealand, in Ahmedabad, Jaffer said during an interaction on Pakistan cricket coach Basit Ali's official Youtube channel, “Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were rested seeing the bigger picture, with the Tests against Australia coming up. India can qualify for the WTC final. And rightly so." "(However) Looking at the future, this game is for youngsters. I actually don't see Rohit Sharma playing in the next T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli may play, but Rohit Sharma definitely won't play the next edition. He's already 35. So, looking at the bigger picture, it's important that they are mentally fresh for the Australia series," Jaffer further added.

With no Kohli and Rohit in India's T20I setup, India have been led by Hardik Pandya in the shortest format following the 2022 T20 WC in Australia. Under Hardik, India have defeated New Zealand (home and away) and Sri Lanka (home). While he has not been named as the official T20I captain, Hardik is being touted to take over from Rohit and an official announcement can be made later this year.

For now, Rohit, Kohli and other senior players have shifted their focus to the longer formats. The duo will be seen in action in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy where India will lock horns with Australia with the seris opener starting on February 09.

On Wednesday (February 01), Hardik Pandya-led India thumped New Zealand by a whopping 168 runs in the third and final T20I at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad to clinch the series 2-1. After losing the series opener in Ranchi, the Men in Blue won a low-scoring thriller in Lucknow before wrapping up the series without dropping any sweat following Shubman Gill's record-breaking ton. Gill continued his rich vein of form versus the Kiwis -- having already scored a double hundred in the three ODIs -- to score his maiden ton in the format and take India to 234/4. During the NZ run-chase, early wickets and Suryakumar Yadav's stunning catches dented Mitchell Santner & Co. as the fate of the contest was out in no time.

Winning the toss, India opted to bat first with Umran Malik coming in place of Yuvzendra Chahal. Gill's first fifty came off 35 balls and the next off mere 19 deliveries as he created havoc in front of a jam-packed stadium in Ahmedabad. Rahul Tripathi's 22-ball 44 set the tone for the Indian innings and allowed Gill to take some time before he launched onto the poor deliveries. He remained unbeaten on 126, off 63 balls, striking at a whopping 200 along with 12 fours and 7 sixes. He was immaculate against the pacers, with his timely pulls, drives, flicks, etc., as India reached a mammoth total in 20 overs.

'The future is here': Virat Kohli lauds Shubman Gill after his 3rd T20I heroics vs New Zealand

India's newly appointed T20 captain Hardik Pandya is seeking to fill big shoes. After India won the T20I series against New Zealand on Wednesday, Pandya said he was emulating the role of former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the finisher of the team. "I don't mind playing the role that somewhere down the line, Mahi used to play. At that time, I was young and hitting all around the park. But since he's gone, all of a sudden, that responsibility is onto me," said Pandya. "I don't mind that. We are getting the results. It's okay if I have to play a little slow." Pandya, who started off as a bowling allrounder has evolved in his overall gameplay over the years. With T20 cricket being micro analysed by fans and team strategists alike, aggressive intent has become the keyword. However, Pandya is not confining himself to the same notions. The 29-year-old said he is willing to slow down and bat for the team, unlike his previous self. “I’ve always enjoyed hitting sixes. But that’s life; I’ve to evolve. I’ve believed in partnerships and want to give my batting partner and team some assurance and calmness that I’m there," said Pandya, who incidentally won the Player of the Series award for his performance. "I’ve played more games than any of these guys; I’ve learned how to accept and swallow pressure and make sure everything is calm." India, courtesy of a stellar hundred from Shubman Gill and a 30-run cameo from Pandya managed to post a mammoth 234 on the board. Defending the target, Pandya led from the front yet again and scalped four wickets as the Kiwis could never really get going. Riding on his maiden hundred in the format, India posted 234 for 4 and defended the score with NZ were dismissed for a paltry 66 in 12.1 overs, to lose by 168 runs. While it was Gill who led the charge with the ball, captain Hardik broke the backbone of Kiwis' batting line-up with 4 for 16. However, Suryakumar Yadav also contributed with three stunning catches; including two sharp ones in the slip cordon. As Hardik dismssed dangerman Finn Allen for cheap in the first over, SKY made heads turn as he timed his jump to perfection and held onto a stunning catch. During the Indian innings, he also made a mark with an entertaining 13-ball 24 studded with 1 four and 2 sixes. At the post-match presentation, Hardik reflected on his team's big win and said, " I don't mind winning (man of the series award), but there were so performances here that were exceptional. This Man of the Series and trophy goes out to the whole support staff, I'm happy for all of them. (On doing things out of the box) Not to be honest, I always play the game like this. I try to read what is required, not have preconceived ideas. In my captaincy, I look to keep it simple and back my gut. I have a simple rule - if I go down, I will go down on my terms. We've spoken about taking challenges. When we played the IPL final, we felt the second innings was more spicy but on this surface today I wanted to make it a normal game because it was a decider. Hence, we batted first. Hopefully, we can continue performing like this."

If reports are to be believed, the pitch curator at Lucknow's Ekana Stadium has got the sack after preparing a horrid pitch that Indian captain Hardik Pandya termed a 'shocker of a wicket'. According to an Indian Express report, the sources in the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) confirmed the decision of the curator's sacking. It is being reported that the pitch curator, who goes by the name Surinder, was asked at the eleventh hour by the Indian team management to prepare a new pitch. While the curator had two black soil pitches ready to go, the request by the top Indian management threw a spanner in the plans as the pitch could not be readied in time. “At the behest of a last-minute request from team management three days prior to the match, the curator had been asked to prepare a fresh pitch made of red soil instead. The new pitch could not be adequately prepared on short notice, and led to even slower conditions," said the publication. After India just about managed to hold their own in the second T20I to level the series, skipper Pandya did not mince his words in the criticism of the pitch. "To be honest, it was a shocker of a wicket. Both the games we have played so far. I don't mind difficult wickets. I am all up for that, but these two wickets are not made for T20. Somewhere down the line the curators or the grounds that we are going to play in should make sure they prepare the pitches earlier," he said. "Even 120 would have been a winning total here. Dew didn't play much of a role because if you see they were able to spin the ball more than us. It was a shocker of a wicket. The ball was flying for even the fast bowlers." Batting second, India were expecting the dew to make matters easier for the batters. However, the ball started turning square during the chase which allowed New Zealand spinners to come into the act and eventually win the match. Even the visitors were surprised to see the extent of spin they were able to extract out of the pitch. "We were surprised with the turn, in the first innings too and we were fortunate to bowling second and the turn was still there," said off-spinner Michael Bracewell. Lucknow pitch curator gets the sack for preparing below par wicket: Reports

The pitch on offer during the second T20I between India and New Zealand was no less than a shocker, said India’s stand-in captain Hardik Pandya. As India somehow managed to chase down a mere target of 100 just inside 20 overs, captain Pandya didn’t mince his words while going hard on the curators for preparing a surface he felt wasn’t best for T20 cricket. With a six-wicket win on Sunday in Lucknow, India levelled the three-match T20Is 1-1 with the decider to be played in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, February 1st.

Deciding to bat first after winning the toss, New Zealand batters felt the wrath of the pitch at the Ekana Stadium from the word do. So much so that only five fours were hit during Kiwi innings, let alone hitting a six. As Indian bowlers made most of it, they held New Zealand to paltry total of 99 for eight in 20 overs.

India’s chase wasn’t easy either. The openers had their struggles as Gill got out on 11 while both Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tripathi ate many balls just to put up 19 and 13 to their names, respectively. Suryakumar Yadav, who is known to accelerate from ball one, could find just one boundary. Pandya and Washington Sundar also contributed little with bat as India hunt down 100 runs with just one ball to spare.

As the T20I series is now levelled with one match to go, India will aim to finish it on a high with a win to their name. While India will be involved in a Test series after this, their next white-ball assignment will be against Australia at home in the three-match ODIs, starting March 17th in Mumbai.

Indian T20I team captain Hardik Pandya was a surprised man after his team lost the first T20I match against New Zealand. Pandya said the amount of spin the NZ bowlers extracted in the second innings, made life tough for the Indian batters. "No one even thought the wicket would play like that, New Zealand clearly played better cricket and they are the deserved winners. The ball was turning more with the new ball than the old one, caught by surprise by the bounce and turn." Still in the nascent stages of his international captaincy career, Pandya, however, was blunt in his assessment of the bowling performance. He said the bowlers conceded a little too many at the fag end of the New Zealand innings. "On hindsight, I don't think this wicket was 177, we were poor with the ball and we ended up giving 25 runs more than the par," said Pandya at the post-match ceremony. "We're a young group, we make mistakes but we need to learn from it, that's how we're looking at it as well." However, the opposite transpired. The dew wasn't as heavy and New Zealand started with Micahel Bracewell. The off-spinner got the ball to turn and bounce as opener Ishan Kishan was outfoxed by a pearler that kissed the top of off. Bracewell seemed amazed like Pandya and said, "We were surprised with the turn, in the first innings too and we were fortunate to bowling second and the turn was still there." Such was the control of spinners that opposition captain Mitchell Santner managed to bowl a maiden over to Suryakumar Yadav, of all batters. "It was a bit of a shock for everyone involved as to how much it spun in the second innings. It was a great game, pretty tight in the end. And it was nice to see the ball spin a bit more," said Santner. 'No one thought...': Hardik Pandya surprised after defeat against New Zealand in first T20I

Ahead of the start of the three-match T20I series against New Zealand, newly-appointed India’s T20I captain Hardik Pandya said the returning Prithvi Shaw will have to wait for his chance as the man-in-form Shubman Gill will be preferred over him for the Ranchi game, scheduled to begin on Friday, January 27th. Gill became the youngest batter to register a double hundred against the Kiwis in the first ODI in Hyderabad, hitting 208, while in the final One-Dayer in Indore, he scored yet another century – ending the three-match series with 360 runs at an average of 180.

"Prithvi Shaw will have to wait for his opportunity as Shubman Gill has done very well and was already part of the T20 team," Hardik Pandya said in the presser in Ranchi.

Gill, who got preferred over Ishan Kishan before the start of this series at a time when Kishan had notched up the fastest double hundred in ODIs against Bangladesh in his last game, will again be played ahead of Shaw. Prithvi, who kept pressing his case for a place in the team owing to remarkable performances in the domestic cricket, finally got picked for New Zealand T20Is. He, however, falls second in the pecking order when it’s compared to Gill in white-ball cricket.

Meanwhile, both Shaw and Gill were part of India’s Under-19 World Cup squad that won the title in 2018 against Australia in the finals. Though Shaw got his chance first as he scored a debut Test hundred against the Windies, Gill took some time before getting roped into the Indian team. His main contribution, however, came during the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar series in Australia where he scored 259 runs in three Tests opening against the best pace attack in the world.

It was on that tour only when Shaw failed to deliver across two Tests and was later dropped. The team persisted with Gill across formats after that and it paid dividends as Gill kept scoring runs at consistent rate against top teams in different conditions. Going by how he is playing at the moment, it would be hard to look beyond Gill in the opening slot.

Indian allrounder Hardik Pandya was dismissed in a rather controversial manner during the first ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

The incident transpired in the 40th over of the innings when Pandya was facing medium-pacer Daryl Mitchell. With wicketkeeper Tom Latham up on the stumps, Hardik seemingly got beaten on the fourth delivery of the over.

The ball passed perilously close to the top of off and landed in Latham's gloves. The zing bails, however, lit up a nanosecond later, thereby suggesting that the ball had dislodged the bails.

The on-field umpires went upstairs to third umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan for confirmation. The umpire, after multiple viewings gave Pandya out on the big screen, much to the dismay of the viewers and the batter himself.

The replays showed that the ball had passed the stumps without making any contact. However, Latham's gloves had brushed the bails and after he lifted them to collect the ball, they were dislodged.

Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri who was in the commentary box at the time said Mitchell and New Zealand should be 'happy' that it was given out.

Being asked to bat first, India rode on captain Rohit Sharma's 83, Shubman Gill's 70 and Virat Kohli's 87-ball 113 to post a mammoth 373 for 7 and later defended the total with Sri Lanka managing 306 for 8 in their full quota of overs. Thus, India kicked off their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations in style with an easy 67-run win as former captain Kohli set the platform with his 45th ton in the format, 73rd overall.

Kohli came out to bat, at No. 3, with India well-placed courtesy an impressive 143-run opening stand between Rohit and Gill. Kohli stitched handy stands with Shreyas Iyer (28) and KL Rahul (39) to slam an impressive ton. His inning was a mixture of finding the boundaries and running hard between wickets but the former skipper wasn't pleased with vice-captain Hardik Pandya turning down a run during their 27-run fifth-wicket stand. The incident took place in the 43rd over when Kohli and Hardik completed a run but the former was keen to sneak in another single. Just then, he looked at Hardik and tried to persuade him but the vice-captain refused and turned down the chance to complete a double. Kohli wasn't impressed with Hardik and gave him a stare. The video of the incident has now gone viral on social media platforms:

WATCH: Virat Kohli stares at Hardik Pandya after he turns down second run in 1st ODI vs Sri Lanka

A lot has been said and written about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's T20I future following the T20 World Cup, which took place last year in Australia. Following India's ten-wicket defeat at the hands of eventual winners England in the semi-finals, many thought it was the end of the road for Rohit and Kohli, two of India's finest batters, in the shortest format of the game. While nothing official has been annonunced, it seems the BCCI selectors have started to move on from the two senior pros as they are believed to shift their focus solely on this year's ODI World Cup, in India, whereas India have relied on Hardik Pandya to lead a young and inexperienced T20I team since the T20 WC debacle.

With Hardik being touted as the next T20I captain, also the next white-ball skipper after Rohit, and BCCI selectors relying on young guns for the shortest format, there is uncertainity regarding Rohit and Kohli's future in the format. Ahead of the India-Sri Lanka ODIs, which gets underway on Tuesday (January 10), Karim told News Sports, "I feel there is no need to pick them currently. Yes, they can be considered if they do well in the IPL,” said Karim. He added, “There is a chance that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will have a fantastic IPL season. If that happens, the selectors will not be able to look beyond them. The same happened in Dinesh Karthik's case last year."

Ahead of the SL ODIs, captain Rohit has confirmed that he hasn't given up on the T20I format. It will be interesting to see if the selectors consider bringing back the senior duo in the upcoming series or after IPL 2023. Given that India have started preparations for the ODI WC, to be held in India in October-November, Rohit and Kohli have shifted their focus on the 50-over format.

'No need to....' Former Indian stumper opines on Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli's T20I future

Number one T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav cannot do anything wrong at the moment. Against Sri Lanka in the third and final T20I in Rajkot, SKY, as his fans often call him, slammed his third hundred in the format. Looking at the different array of shots he plays, one wonders if cricket really comes this easy to him. Running out of words to explain what it means to have a player like Surya in your team, India’s new T20I captain Hardik Pandya said SKY continues to impress everyone with what he does.

Speaking during the post-match presentation, Hardik said if he’d be bowling to him (SKY) at this moment, he’d rather be disheartened; adding Surya keeps on playing blinders after blinders – which is now becoming a habit for him.

"If I was bowling to him, I'd be disheartened...because of the kind of shots he has been playing," Pandya said during the post-match presentation ceremony. "He's been surprising everyone every evening and he's letting everyone know that you know what, this batting is very easy, you know. He's been actually playing blinders after blinders and, which is now becoming a habit and, which is fantastic for him,” Pandya said.

Talking more about him, Hardik said SKY is an experienced player and understands the game situation very well, and that he doesn’t need to be told about his batting by anyone.

"I leave him alone. You don't need to tell much was to him. He's quite experienced now, he's aware of this situation, he knows what exactly is happening. And whenever he finds a situation where he's not sure, we always have a chat and, you know, always find a solution," Hardik added.

During his innings of 112* of 51 balls, the right-handed SKY hit nine massive sixes and seven fours. Explaining on how he manages to do that with such ease, the 32-year-old said he keeps putting extra pressure on himself and keeps trying different shots during net practices.

"I think it's really important for you to put pressure on yourself when you're preparing for any game," Suryakumar said. "In your practice sessions, it is very important what you do, what process and routines you follow. And if you put a lot of pressure on yourself when you are doing practice and during the sessions, then it gets a little easier when you're playing a game.

"Of course, there is a lot of hard work involved, but at the same time, you've got to be doing some quality practice sessions as well. You know, you should know what your game is and at the end of the day, how you're gonna get your runs on the ground? And I just try and keep things very simple," Suryakumar concluded.

After the T20I series, the action will move to the One-Dayers that are beginning on January 10th in Guwahati.

'He's surprising everyone...' Hardik Pandya lauds Suryakumar Yadav following Rajkot win against Sri Lanka

Following team India’s 2-1 T20I series win over Sri Lanka in Rajkot on Saturday, the newly-appointed captain Hardik Pandya spoke about his rise and success as a shorter-format skipper. Crediting the former India seamer and his IPL franchise, Gujarat Titans’ (GT) coach, Ashish Nehra for the same, Hardik said it was Nehra who made a huge difference in his life mainly because of his mindset. Getting introduced for the first time in the IPL in 2022 itself, the Gujarat Titans broke shackles and won their maiden league title last year beating Rajasthan Royals in the finals.

Speaking in detail about the bond and partnership with Nehra at GT, Hardik said it was all about getting the assurance from the coach and once he got it, he could pull things off. Nehra’s presence not only helped him get what he wanted, Hardik claimed that it added value to his captaincy as well.

"What has been very important from Gujarat point of view is the kind of coach I worked with. Ashish Nehra made a big difference in my life, because of our mindsets. We might be two different personalities, but we have very similar cricketing thoughts," Hardik said after leading India to a series win over Sri Lanka.

"Because I was with him, it added value to my captaincy. It helped me to get exactly what I know. It was just about getting that assurance, once I got that... the awareness of this game I always knew. It was all about knowing and backing what I knew already. It has definitely helped me," the star all-rounder added.

It was after India’s embarrassing T20 World Cup semifinal loss to England that the selectors decided to go with a young and separate team for this format. This meant Rohit Sharma was scrapped from the T20I captaincy and Hardik Pandya was handed over the role to lead the new-looking side.

Under his first major assignment, Hardik has shown glimpses of a natural leader in him as he guided the Men in Blue to win the first series of this 2023. He would now be leading the team against New Zealand in the upcoming home T20Is as well.

Hardik Pandya credits Ashish Nehra for captaincy success, says 'we have similar cricketing thoughts'

India and Sri Lanka met in the second and penultimate T20I on Thursday evening (January 05) at the MCA Stadium, Pune. In a high-scoring thriller, Hardik Pandya & Co. lost by 16 runs as Sri Lanka levelled the series with the final encounter on Saturday (January 07). Dasun Shanaka's 22-ball 56 and two wickets along with handy contributions from Kusal Mendis (52), Dilshan Madushanka, and Kasun Rajitha (two scalps each) led to the Islanders' win.

India did put up a good fight, after reeling at 57 for 5, courtesy of Suryakumar Yadav's (51) and Axar Patel's (31-ball 65 not out) 91-run sixth-wicket stand but their bowlers' ordinary show and loss of early wickets in a steep chase put them behind. Arshdeep Singh, who didn't play the series opener due to illness, made heads turn with the ball by returning with 2-0-37-0; comprising five no-balls (three on the trot). Thus, he has now bowled the joint most no-balls by any bowler from a Full Member side in the format and most by an Indian. After the match, fingers were pointed at Arshdeep but head coach Rahul Dravid has backed the 23-year-old youngster, who was India's star performer in the T20 World Cup last year.

“Nobody wants to bowl wides (no-balls) in any format. Especially in T20s, they can hurt you. We need to be patient with lot of these young kids. There are a lot of youngsters playing in this team, especially our bowling attack. They are young kids; they will have games like these at times. We all need to be patient with them and understanding. Of course, they are working hard, and we keep trying to help them, support them technically, and also just create the right environment for them to be able to get the best out of their skills,” Dravid said in the post-match conference.

Dravid added, "It’s tough. It’s not easy learning in international cricket and you have to learn on the job. The good thing is, with the focus on the ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship, at least in the T20Is, it gives us an opportunity to try out a lot of the younger guys."

After the closely-fought second T20I, captain Hardik told in the post-match presentation, "Going for runs is fine but no balls aren't. Not blaming or being hard but he (Arshdeep) needs to go back and make sure these basic errors don't happen at this level. It's not about blaming but no ball is a crime."

"Both bowling and batting - powerplay hurt us. We made basic errors which we shouldn't do at this level. Learning should be the basics we can control. You can have a bad day but shouldn't be going away from basics," added the 29-year-old Hardik.

Overall, India gave away 12 runs in extras, including four wides and seven no-balls, as SL have levelled the series. The third and final match will be held at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot on Saturday evening.

'We all need to be...' - Rahul Dravid backs Arshdeep Singh after pacer's horror show in India-SL 2nd T20I

After missing the series opener due to illness, Arshdeep Singh was named in India's XI for the second and penultimate T20I versus Sri Lanka, in Pune, on Thursday (January 05). The 23-year-old left-armer had a forgettable outing, returning with 2-0-37-0 including five no-balls (three on the trot). Thus, Arshdeep has now bowled the joint most no-balls by any bowler in the format from a Full Member team and most by an Indian.

Indian bowlers, in general, were expensive and off the mark as they conceded 12 extras (four wides and seven no-balls) as Sri Lanka rode on Kusal Mendis' 52 and Dasun Shanaka's 22-ball 56 to post 206 for 7 after being asked to bat first. In reply, India were 57 for 5 before Suryakumar Yadav's 51, Axar Patel's 31-ball 65* and Shivam Mavi's 15-ball 26 brought the hosts back before they fell short by 16 runs. After the game, lots of fingers have been pointed at Arshdeep. Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has now schooled the young pacer and said 'not bowling a no-ball is definitely in the bowler's control'.

"As a professional, you can't be doing this. We often hear today's players say, things aren't in our control. Not bowling no ball is in your control. What happens after you deliver the ball, what the batsman does, is another thing. Not bowling a no ball is definitely in your control," Gavaskar said during his commentary stint on Star Sports.

Dravid has also hinted that India won't chop and change a lot for the final T20I, on Saturday (January 07) in Rajkot, with the series on the line.

Also read: 'We all need to be...' - Rahul Dravid backs Arshdeep Singh after pacer's horror show in India-SL 2nd T20I Meanwhile, head coach Rahul Dravid called for patience and defended Arshdeep despite his horror showing. Dravid told in the post-match conference, "Nobody wants to bowl wides (no-balls) in any format. Especially in T20s, they can hurt you. We need to be patient with lot of these young kids. There are a lot of youngsters playing in this team, especially our bowling attack. They are young kids; they will have games like these at times. We all need to be patient with them and understanding. Of course, they are working hard, and we keep trying to help them, support them technically, and also just create the right environment for them to be able to get the best out of their skills." Dravid has also hinted that India won't chop and change a lot for the final T20I, on Saturday (January 07) in Rajkot, with the series on the line.

India and Sri Lanka faced each other on Thursday evening (January 05), in Pune, in the second and penultimate T20I. With India being 1-0 ahead, Hardik Pandya & Co. aimed for an unassailable lead but fell short due to their bowlers' ordinary show and the top order's failure. Inviting SL to bat first, the Islanders rode on Dasun Shanaka's 22-ball 56 and Kusal Mendis' 52 to post 206/7 whereas India only managed 190/8, with Dilshan Madushanka, Kasun Rajitha, and Shanaka ending with two scalps each.

Among the Indian bowlers, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, and Shivam Mavi were the most expensive with the former bowling five no-balls. Overall, India conceded four wides and seven no-balls (12 extras in total). While Arshdeep bowled three no-balls on the trot in his first over, he bowled two more in his second and final over. Bowling the 19th over, he got rid of SL captain Dasun Shanaka -- who was caught at long-on by Suryakumar Yadav -- but didn't get the wicket as he once again overstepped. Following Arshdeep's repeated mistakes, Hardik was in shock and covered his face in disbelief. Here's the video:

Indian cricket team captain Hardik Pandya was not a pleased man after his side surrendered the advantage in the series on Thursday. Pandya was especially not happy with the bowlers and pointed at Arshdeep Singh to get his basics right. During the post-match presentation ceremony, Pandya reflected on the extras bowled by his bowlers and called the players to tighten up their basics of the game. "Going for runs is fine but no balls aren't. Not blaming or being hard but he (Arshdeep) needs to go back and make sure these basic errors don't happen at this level. It's not about blaming but no ball is a crime," Pandya told Murli Kartik. The left-arm medium pacer had an off day in the field as he bowled as many as five no-balls during his two-over spell. Singh leaked 37 runs and became the first bowler in T20I history to bowl three no-balls on the trot. "Both bowling and batting - powerplay hurt us. After the wicket, India managed to claw their way back into the game as the Sri Lankan innings appeared going nowhere at the end of the 16th over as the scoreboard read 138/6. However, skipper Dasun Shanaka stepped onto the plate and single-handedly changed the course of the match. Striking at 254.55, the right-handed batter smoked six sixes and two fours en-route to his 22-ball 56. Courtesy of his magnificent knock, Sri Lanka managed a steep-looking score of 206 for six in 20 overs. Chasing the total, India got off to the worst possible start four wickets fell in the powerplay. 'He needs to go back...': Hardik Pandya has advice for this bowler after loss against Sri Lanka

Hardik Pandya's India started 2023 with a bang by defeating Sri Lanka by two runs in the first T20I of the three-match series, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on Tuesday (January 03). Hardik & Co. were asked to bat first and rode on Ishan Kishan's 37, Deepak Hooda's 41* and Axar Patel's 31* to post 162-5. In reply, Shivam Mavi's 4 for 22 and Umran Malik's 2 for 27 led to SL being all-out for 160 on the final ball to lose by two runs.

Ahead of the second and penultimate tie, to be held in Pune on Thursday (January 05), former Indian stumper and selector Saba Karim has shared words of wisdom for new captain Hardik.

Speaking to India News, Karim pointed out, "I think he needs to focus on his attitude. Everyone likes him as a player because of his attitude. As a captain, if you show a lot of emotions on the field, players will get fearful. I don’t think that’s the right thing for a team to grow. You have to trust your players."

Karim further opined, "I liked two things about captain Hardik Pandya. He said that he wanted to bat regardless of the toss. It means he knows the challenges ahead; bilateral matches are aside, but you have to learn something in every match and put your team in a tough situation."

Shivam Mavi made a dream debut with a relentless display of fast bowling as his four-wicket haul made the difference in India's narrow two-run win over a spirited Sri Lanka in the first T20I on Tuesday.

India batters found the Sri Lankan spinners hard to put away before Deepak Hooda (41 not out off 23) and Axar Patel (31 not out off 20) took the hosts to 162 for five.

The Sri Lankans surely had the firepower to chase down 163 but Mavi's strikes at the front and back end of the innings tilted the game in favour of the home team.

The game went down to the wire with spinner Axar Patel managing to defend 13 runs in the final over. Mavi ended with envious figures of four for 22 in four overs.

The fighting knocks from skipper Dasun Shanaka (45 off 27) and Chamika Karunaratne (23 not out off 16) went in vain as Sri Lanka ended 160 all out in 20 overs. This is the lowest total India have defended at the high-scoring Wankhede Stadium.

Skipper Hardik Pandya decided to bowl the first over and the pressure created by him helped debutant Mavi at the other end. Hardik bowled full tilt and hardly gave anything away, conceding only 12 runs in his three-over spell.

Mavi's moment to cherish came in his first over as he showed remarkable composure to strike back after being hit for two fours by Kusal Mendis. Having already got a life in Hardik's first over, Pathum Nissanka had no clue about Mavi's beauty of a delivery that jagged back in to shatter the stumps.

In his second over too, Mavi got hit for a couple of fours before he had Dhanajaya de Silva caught at mid-on. It became 47 for three in the eighth over when Ishan Kishan took a brilliant catch running backwards after Charith Asalanka mistimed a pull off Umran Malik.

Pacer Harshal Patel got lucky with his first wicket as a dangerous-looking Mendis found the deep point fielder before getting rid of Bhanuka Rajapaksa with a slower ball, leaving Sri Lanka struggling at 68 for five in the 11th over. Hardik had to leave the field briefly after taking Rajapaksa's catch.

Hasaranga and skipper Shanaka made the game interesting with a quickfire 40-run stand off 23 balls. Hasaranga put the pressure back on the Indians by smashing Yuzvendra Chahal for back-to-back sixes over mid-wicket, reducing the equation to a very gettable 56 runs off 36 balls.

Mavi was brought back to break the threatening partnership and that is what he did by having Hasaranga caught at mid-off. Shanaka kept Sri Lanka in the game singlehandedly before falling to Umran in the 17th over.

The game somehow went down to the last over with Chamika Karunratne providing a ray of hope for the visitors. With Hardik unable to bowl his fourth over after a fall on the field, Axar was called in to defend 13 in the final over.

Earlier, Hooda and Axar shared an unbeaten 68-run stand off 38 balls for the sixth wicket after India found themselves at a shaky 94 for five at the high-scoring Wankhede Stadium.

Playing his first international innings since the double hundred in Bangladesh, Kishan (37 off 29) went ballistic in the first over itself that yielded 17 runs.

Searching for some swing, right-arm pacer Kasun Rajitha pitched it up and Kishan was quick to flick it over deep square leg for a massive six. Then a slower ball was hit down the ground for four before Kishan pulled Rajitha for another boundary.

Shubman Gill (7), who made his T20 debut alongside Mavi, began his innings with a delightful cover driver off Dilshan Madhushanka.

Shanaka introduced spin in the third over via Maheesh Theekshana and he delivered with the wicket of Gill who missed a straighter one from the mystery spinner to be trapped in front of the stumps. Hoping against hope, Gill wasted a review in the process.

India's best T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav (7) too perished cheaply, leaving the hosts at 41 for two in the powerplay. Playing his first game in front of his home crowd, Surya went for his usual scoop shot but mistimed it to be caught at short fine leg by Bhanuka Rajapaksa off Chamika Karunaratne.

Sanju Samson (5) wasted another opportunity by mistiming a slog off Dhananjaya de Silva.

The spinners stemmed the flow of runs in the middle overs with India collecting only 26 in overs 10-15 with the loss of Kishan and skipper Hardik Pandya (29 off 27), who could not find his range after starting with a couple of exquisite stokes on the off side.

Coming in at number six, Hooda tried to change the course of the innings with back-to-back sixes over deep midwicket off Theekshana. He targeted the same area against Hasaranga in the next over, depositing him for a maximum.

He had good support from Axar as the duo helped India get to a fighting total.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Hardik, Rishabh’s teammate across all formats since his debut, sent love and prayers to Pant on behalf of his team and hoped for his speedy recovery.

"What happened is very unfortunate, no one can control such things. As a team, we wish all the best, our love and prayers are always with him. Wish him a speedy recovery," Hardik Pandya said.

It was during the wee hours on Friday morning (December 30th, 2022) when Pant, who was reported by the police later to have fallen asleep, met with a serious accident after his car ramped into the roadside dividers before getting flipped and catching fire.

While Pant escaped the scene without suffering any life-threatening injuries, he still endured several cuts and bruises including ligament tears in his right knee. With the extent of his leg injuries remaining unknown for now, it was still reported that Pant could be out of action for at least three to six months.

This means Pant will be missing the upcoming Test series against Australia at home and the IPL 2023 as well. With doubts looming over his participation in the home World Cup later this year as well, Hardik Pandya said Pant was crucial part of the plan going forward and his absence comes as a blow for the team.

"Coming to the point, obviously he was a very important part of (Team India's plans in the world Cup year). But, now everyone knows the situation. There are a lot of people who can get opportunities. I am seeing that if Rishabh also would have been there, he could have made a huge impact. But now, let's wait and see what the future holds for us," Hardik added.

'As a team, our love and prayers are with him' - New T20I captain Hardik Pandya on Rishabh Pant's accident

The Indian senior men's cricket team will kick off their 2023 schedule with a three-match T20I series versus Sri Lanka on home soil, starting on Tuesday (January 03) in Mumbai. The T20I squad doesn't comprise many senior players and will be led by Hardik Pandya -- who is touted to be the next captain in the shortest format. Hardik will lead a young squad with the likes of Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar, etc. at his disposal.

Ahead of the T20I series opener, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, the 29-year-old Hardik revealed his new year resolution. Just like every Indian's dream, the star all-rounder also wants India to win the 2023 ODI World Cup. After 12 years, India will be once again be hosting the 50-over World Cup -- for the first time as the sole hosts -- and will like to replicate their 2011 heroics, when they defeated Sri Lanka in the final (back then, the tournament was co-hosted by India, SL and Bangladesh). While speaking to Sportstar, Hardik spoke about his NY resolution and said, "The biggest new year resolution is to win the World Cup."

Hardik has so far featured in five ICC events for Team India. While he has made produced some glittering performances, India have not been successful in ending their nine-year-long ICC-title drought. India's last major tournament win came in 2013 under former captain MS Dhoni. Thus, the senior player will be hopeful of firing on all cylinders and taking the Men in Blue to the coveted title later this year. During the 2011 ODI WC campaign, Yuvraj Singh was India's star performer, with 362 runs and 15 scalps. Thus, Hardik will like to follow Yuvraj's footsteps and deliver for India.

Hardik has also been promoted as the ODI vice-captain. Thus, the team management is fully backing the star all-rounder and he will be desperate to pay rich dividends in the forthcoming mega event at home.

IND vs SL T20Is: Every Indian's dream! Biggest new year resolution is to win ODI WC, says Hardik Pandya

Last week, the BCCI selection committee announced India's white-ball squads for the home T20Is versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on January 03 in Mumbai. Hardik Pandya was named the T20I captain whereas regular skipper Rohit Sharma will return from a thumb injury to take charge of the ODI line-up versus the Lankans. While nothing has been revealed whether Hardik is set to become the next T20I captain, it is believed that the official announcement will follow suit sometime later this year (with seniors focused on 2023 ODI World Cup). Moreover, he is also being touted as Rohit's successor in limited-overs. He is also named as the ODI vice-captain despite KL Rahul's presence (who held onto the post for a year until the recent squad announcement).

Hardik has impressed many with his calm demeanour as captain -- especially during IPL 2022 for the eventual champions Gujarat Titans. As a result, he has led India on a few occasions last year. While talks are on with many supporting Hardik as a long-term captaincy option, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has pointed out a crucial factor which needs to be taken into consideration before promoting the 29-year-old all-rounder.

Speaking during an interaction on Star Sports, Pathan said, "The captaincy Hardik has done, whether it was for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL or at the start for India, I felt the communication was extremely good. He was seen as very agile." He added, "When there was talk about his captaincy, I was extremely impressed with his approach but along with that India will have to keep in mind that if you are making him the long-term captain, they will have to concentrate a lot on his fitness, whether you talk about him or the team management. It will be very crucial going ahead."

Hardik will lead a young T20I team when India take on Sri Lanka in the series opener on Tuesday (January 03) in Mumbai. It will be the start of a new era with many senior players not being part of the series. It will be interesting to see how Hardik manages himself and continues to perform the role of an all-rounder when leading the side (he bowled in excess of 30 overs and batted at No. 4 mostly during IPL 2022) as he continues to make rapid strides as a leader.

'They'll have to...' - Irfan points out 'crucial' factor if Hardik Pandya becomes India's long-term skipper

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced India's squads for the white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway next year on January 03 in Mumbai. As expected, Hardik Pandya has once again been named as the captain of the T20I squad with no big guns available whereas Rohit Sharma will return to take charge of the ODI line-up after his thumb injury during the Bangladesh tour. Hardik has also been promoted as the new ODI vice-captain (despite KL Rahul's presence).

Some of the notable factors from the T20I line-up is that Suryakumar Yadav has been named as the vice-captain, which doesn't include the likes of Rahul, Rishabh Pant, etc. Meanwhile, it is a young squad including the likes of Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar (recently bought by Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023 mini-auction for INR 5 crores), etc. It gives one a sneak peek of the selectors' mindset keeping in view the next edition of the T20 World Cup, in the West Indies and USA, in 2024.

Talking about the ODI squad, Pant remains absent from it as well. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is also not part of both squads. The biggest omission is Shikhar Dhawan, who has struggled for runs and has seen a sharp decline in his strike rate amid rising stocks of Kishan and Gill. Meanwhile, Md Shami also returned whereas the likes of Rahul and Kohli will feature straightaway in the 50-over series. There's no mention of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja as the duo are expected to return for the New Zealand white-ball series at home.

BCCI's official Twitter handle released the squads via separate posts:

IND vs SL: Hardik Pandya to lead in T20Is, promoted as ODI vice-captain with Shikhar Dhawan dropped

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named India's T20I and ODI squad for their forthcoming white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka. The new year starts with India hosting Sri Lanka in three T20Is and ODIs each before New Zealand's white-ball tour and Australia's visit to the Asian country for four Tests and three ODIs. Hardik Pandya was appointed as the T20I squad whereas Rohit Sharma will return for the SL ODIs with the former being named his deputy despite KL Rahul's presence.

With Rahul being demoted and Hardik's stocks rising as captain, veteran Team India keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik feels Rohit and the star all-rounder will be the captain and vice-captain leading into the 2023 ODI World Cup. During a conversation in Cricbuzz, the 37-year-old pointed out that 'Hardik has thrown his name strongly in the mix' and will remain in the leadership group for quite long.

Karthik told, "Absolutely. I think leadership definitely, for me, is a close call. And I think it will be between Rohit and Hardik Pandya. These two are the big names. I know KL Rahul has been the white-ball vice-captain, but I do think Hardik Pandya has thrown his name strongly in the mix and it will be captain vice-captain role between a Hardik and a Rohit in the coming 12 months, because I think he has shown his skills in the IPL as a leader and that might be coming through soon for Team India as well."

"So, for the moment, it looks like even though there are a lot of other leaders who have captained India in the recent 12 months because of the amount of cricket played with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant. All these players donning the captain's hat for a bit. Jasprit Bumrah as well. But for the moment, it will be a toss up between Rohit and Hardik Pandya or rather Rohit and Hardik Pandya will be the captain and vice-captain leading into the World Cup for sure," concluded the keeper-batter.

On Tuesday (December 27), the BCCI selectors announced India's T20I and ODI squad for the Sri Lanka home series, which gets underway on January 3 in Mumbai. It will be India's first assignment in the upcoming year with the focus primarily on the 2023 ODI World Cup at home. The series will be followed by New Zealand's white-ball tour of India before Australia arrives for four Tests and three ODIs in the run-up to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition in India.

Hardik Pandya is set to lead the T20I side with big guns such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul absent whereas Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the vice-captain. Regular captain Rohit will return for the ODIs, after a thumb injury he suffered in the Bangladesh tour, and will have Hardik as his new deputy despite Rahul's presence. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is missing from both squads whereas Shikhar Dhawan has been dropped from ODIs. Rishabh Pant is also not part of the series, reportedly due to fitness concerns. A young T20I squad will take on the Lankans first -- as a transition has started for India in the format -- before the three ODIs from January 10. Sri Lanka tour of India 2023: From schedule to live telecast - Everything you need to know

Hardik Pandya can replace Rohit Sharma to become the new white ball captain of the Indian cricket team, according to reports. The disappointing run in the ICC T20 World Cup and an ODI series loss against Bangladesh has put the team under a lot of pressure and a change in captaincy can be the first step towards rebuilding. Media reports claim that Rohit has been suffering from a number of injuries in the recent past and as a result, Hardik may become captain on a permanent basis.

Rohit became the T20I captain in 2021 during the home series against New Zealand and later in the year, he replaced Virat Kohli to become the ODI skipper. However, he has been plagued by injuries since then and he has also not played any part in the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh.

Pandya has been a revelation since making his return from injury as the all-rounder produced couple of good performances in the domestic circuit and followed it up with a brilliant display in IPL 2022. He was one of the top performers for the debutants Gujarat Titans and in his first year as skipper, he led by example to clinch the trophy. Reports claimed that Pandya has already been informed about the plan to replace Rohit and the BCCI are waiting for his availability in both T20Is and ODIs.

The all-rounder has led the Indian cricket team in 5 T20I with the team winning four. India will host Sri Lanka in January 2023 and although Rohit is all set to make his comeback from injury, there is a chance that the BCCI may opt for a change in leadership.

Hardik Pandya likely to replace Rohit Sharma as India's white ball captain: Report

While India’s T20I captain Hardik Pandya and opening batsman Shubman Gill could be promoted in the BCCI’s annual central contract list, veteran seamer Ishant Sharma and batter Ajinkya Rahane could lose their spots. Alongside them, keeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha could also be part of that list. As the board’s apex council meeting is set to take place on December 21st, star T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav could also see him getting promoted.

Among the 12 items on the agenda that will be discussed in the meeting via a video conference, ‘Retainership contract’ of senior men and women cricketers is one huge point. It is understood that out-of-favour Test specialists Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma could face axe in the new list while Saha, who had already been told by the management that he won’t feature for India again, might suffer the same fate as well.

As the contract is divided in four different categories – A+ (7 crores), A (5 crores), B (3 crores) and C (1 crores), we could see some shuffling happening. As per an unnamed senior BCCI official, Suryakumar Yadav, who is currently listed in Group C, will be promoted given his splendid run-of-form in the shortest format this year; while newly-appointed T20I captain Hardik Pandya could also return to Group B from C. Shubman Gill, who is now a regular starter in both Tests and ODIs is likely to get promotion from Group C to Group B.

Ishan Kishan, who has had a fair amount of run in white-ball cricket this year, could well enter the list. The dynamite opener recently smashed a double-hundred against Bangladesh in the ODI series.

"Surya was in Group C but his performance in the last one year warrants a promotion to Group B at least, if not A. He is currently world No. 1 in T20I ICC rankings and is a serious contender in ODI team also," a senior official, who is privy to the developments, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
