Uruguay's top musical export Jorge Drexler overshadowed megastar Bad Bunny's hype at Thursday's Latin Grammys, scoring seven trophies including Best Record during the gala that saw Spain's Rosalia take home the coveted top album award.

The Puerto Rican reggaeton phenom Bad Bunny had been tipped as the favourite coming in with 10 nominations, though he was unable to attend the 23rd edition of the awards held in Las Vegas as he continues his massively popular world tour.

The 28-year-old -- currently the highest-grossing and most streamed artist on the planet following the release of his album 'Un Verano Sin Ti'&nbsp;-- did nab five trophies but fell short of the night's most prestigious prizes.

"Are you sure?" asked a surprised Drexler as he took the stage to accept the award for Song of the Year for 'Tocarte,'&nbsp;a track that also featured Spanish rapper C. Tangana.

Along with Bad Bunny -- whose smash 'Titi Me Pregunto'&nbsp;ultimately scored two awards in the "urban" categories --, the 58-year-old was up against stacked competition including Rosalia, who won four awards including for her critically acclaimed album "Motomami," and Colombia's Karol G.&nbsp;

In his speech Drexler acknowledged the massive reach of Latin urban music including reggaeton, dedicating the award "to everyone who does urban music in Spanish because you've taken our music to places it was never in before."

Drexler was the big winner but in some respects, it was Cuban Angela Alvarez who stole the show: at 95 years old the singer scored a gramophone for Best New Artist.

"It's never too late," said Alvarez, bringing the auditorium to tears in accepting the award that she shared in a tie with the Mexican artist Silvana Estrada.

"I want to dedicate this award to God, and to my beloved Cuba, which I will never forget. And to those who have yet to make their dreams come true, know that although life is hard, there's always a way out and with faith and love everything can be achieved," Alvarez said.&nbsp;

The Recording Academy said it was adding a prize for songwriter of the year (non-classical), which would recognise "the most prolific non-performing and non-producing songwriters for their body of new work released during an eligibility year". 
 
New categories also include best alternative music performance, best Americana performance, best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media and best spoken word poetry album. 
 
The Recording Academy also said it would introduce a special merit award for best song for social change, for which submissions needed to "contain lyrical content that addresses a timely social issue and promotes understanding, peacebuilding and empathy". 
 
The winner will be chosen by a committee and ratified by the Recording Academy Board of Trustees. 
 
"We`re so excited to honor these diverse communities of music creators through the newly established awards and amendments, and to continue cultivating an environment that inspires change, progress and collaboration," Recording Academy Chief Executive Harvey Mason Jr. said in a statement. 
"The Academy`s top priority is to effectively represent the music people that we serve, and each year, that entails listening to our members and ensuring our rules and guidelines reflect our ever-evolving industry."

They had a fashion faceoff in matching Versace outfits which they showed they weren’t aware of but we all know how unlikely is that!&nbsp;

For Grammys 2022, the pair stunned us in the same black dress and shiny leggings. They accessorised the look in similar fashion too – with oversized safety pins and chunky jewellery.

After Oscars 2022, it was&nbsp;Grammys 2022 that chose to not mention legendary Indian playback singer Lata Mangeshkar's name in the Memoriam section.&nbsp; 
 
Last week, the Academy had failed to mention Mangeshkar and Dilip Kumar in the Memoriam section and the Recording Academy which organises the Grammys seems to have followed suit. 
 
Grammys Awards took place in Las Vegas on Sunday and the Memoriam section paid tribute to songs by the late Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, performed by Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Platt and Rachel Zegler. Taylor Hawkins and Tom Parker were also remembered but strangely enough, Mangeshkar did not get a mention - who perhaps has a bigger repertoire of songs than any of these musicians had in their lifetime.&nbsp;

Jon Batiste is a married man. The man who took home five Grammy awards on Sunday reportedly tied the knot with his longtime partner Suleika Jaouad back in February this year.&nbsp; 
 
The news of their marriage was revealed on Sunday by Jaouad during an interview with CBS show Sunday Morning. She is the best selling author of the cancer memoir 'Between Two Kingdoms'. She revealed that the couple wanted to tie the knot after she was diagnosed with leukaemia for the second time.&nbsp; 
 
"We got married the day before I was admitted to the hospital to undergo my bone marrow transplant," she told the outlet.

"We have known that we wanted to get married, I think, from the first week that we started dating. That's when Jon first brought up the topic of marriage to me. So, we've had eight years," Jaouad added. "This is not, you know, a hasty decision!"

The US gambling capital is hosting the ceremony for the first time ever, after organizers postponed the original January 31 event over a surge in Covid-19 cases and then moved it out of Los Angeles.

The timing of the Grammys just one week after Will Smith stunned the world by slapping Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars adds an extra layer of unpredictability to what is already usually one of the more bizarre nights on the showbiz awards circuit.

Justin Bieber will vie for eight trophies at the ceremony hosted by late-night television personality Trevor Noah, as will R&amp;B favourite H.E.R. and singer-rapper Doja Cat.

Grammys darling Billie Eilish is in the running for seven prizes. The same holds true for Olivia Rodrigo, a former Disney channel actress who exploded onto the pop scene last year with her breakout smash hit "drivers license."

The 19-year-old Rodrigo landed expected nods for her much-touted debut album "Sour," and is a near shoo-in for the Best New Artist prize -- she is up against Eilish's brother Finneas, rapper Saweetie and experimental pop act Japanese Breakfast, among others.

Like Eilish in 2020, Rodrigo has the opportunity to sweep the top four categories on the same night, which would make her only the third artist to do so. The first was singer-songwriter Christopher Cross.&nbsp;

But it is Jon Batiste -- the jazz and R&amp;B artist and bandleader, who won an Oscar last year for his soundtrack to the Pixar animated movie "Soul" -- who has the most chances at Grammys gold, snagging 11 nominations including in two top categories.

The artist born into a prominent New Orleans musical dynasty will compete mainly on the strength of his album "We Are" and its rousing single "Freedom."

The sleeper nominations leader is up for awards in fields spanning genre and medium, including R&amp;B, jazz, American roots and contemporary classical, along with nods for Best Music Video and his composition work on "Soul."

He appeared briefly on the red carpet at a pre-Grammy gala Friday, hamming it up for photographers before telling AFP he was feeling "great" ahead of Sunday's awards.

"I'm so happy," he said with a loud whoop. "My granddad came to town!"

&nbsp;Recognition across the board -

The Grammys field is wide open -- especially after the Recording Academy expanded the top four categories yet again, this time to include 10 nominees, in a bid to improve diversity.

"I guess in this instance, expansion of the categories does mean more women, more marginalized people getting recognized," said Brandi Carlile, who is up this year for five gramophones.

"Some things improve in certain areas, they slip in other places," she told AFP, but added: "I'm watching it change and evolve and get better every year, and I'm heartened by it."

The expansion has also resulted in one of the most eclectic crops of Best New Artist nominees in recent memory, even if Rodrigo is widely tipped to win.

"Pop just has a bigger footprint, but I love that they're diving into other genres," country singer Jimmie Allen, a nominee in the category, told AFP.

"Win or lose, I'm just happy to be nominated."

Angelique Kidjo, who has four past Grammys under her belt and has three chances to win this year in the global performance categories, said the Recording Academy had made strides in recent years but that there was a "long road" ahead.

"It's a work in progress," she told AFP. "There's goodwill on their part. How do we bring that into action?"

Korean pop juggernauts BTS scored one nomination in the pop categories for the huge commercial hit "Butter" -- less than expected for the massively popular boy band that has struggled to make inroads at the Grammys.

But BTS is slated to perform at an event watched as much for its staging as the actual awards, as will Rodrigo, Eilish, Batiste, H.E.R. and Lil Nas X.

As per Variety, the outlet stated that it had obtained a copy of the earlier list. Mason told the outlet that the artists added to the list were simply the ninth and tenth most voted by the Academy`s members.&nbsp; 
 
As to whether ratings for the multimillion-dollar Grammy telecast were a consideration for the Swift-West addition, he responded, "A thousand per cent no. That was not a consideration." 
 
Academy co-president Valeisha Butterfield Jones added, "While it may seem rushed, it really was a thoughtful, well-intentioned process that was also data-driven." 
 
Other questions about the final nominations were being raised this week by recording artist Linda Chorney, who said she awoke this week to Google alerts linking to news stories showing she had been nominated for best American roots performance for her song 'Bored'.&nbsp; 
 
Yet when the official list was disseminated, Chorney's song was not among the nominees, and a song by Rhiannon Giddens took the spot that seemingly had been hers. 
 
Chorney says she wrote to some of the reporters who published a story claiming a nomination for her and heard back apologetically from one that the information had been cut-and-pasted from an incorrect source, but she hasn't gotten any feedback on what that source was. With no explanations forthcoming about why erroneous news accounts might have credited her with a nod, Chorney believes she did earn a nomination and that it somehow got axed.
