<p>"When Casper Ruud was [a teenager], Carlos Costa came to me during the French Open and was wondering if he wanted to come [to the Rafa Nadal Academy] and try it out," Christian Ruud said. "It was a big step for us. We are very happy with our relationship with them, and hope it will continue for many years," Ruud's father had recalled in an interview.</p>

<p>Under the roof on Court Philippe Chatrier, one of the biggest matches of the season was cut short at 7-6(8), 6-6, when Zverev had to leave the court on a wheelchair after he badly rolled his right ankle, moving to his right when tracking down a Nadal forehand deep behind the baseline.</p>

<p>"I have a huge respect for him. First of all in terms of a friend, he has a great character," Nadal said of Ruud, who has been training at his academy in Mallorca since 2018. "He`s a great guy, and he has a great family.</p>

<p>Nadal and Ruud have never played a competitive match before, but the duo have hit against each other plenty of times and the Norwegian says he has never won a practice set against his idol.</p>

<p>Ruud, who will rise to a career-high ranking of sixth on Monday, said he has already gone past his pre-season target of making a quarter-final at a major in 2022.</p>

<p>"It is amazing... He is the last player of the Big Three and the very top players in the world I have never played against," Ruud said.</p>

<p>"So I guess this is perfect timing and worth the wait. To finally play him in a Grand Slam final will be a special moment for me. Hopefully a little bit for him as well.</p>

<p>"He has played so many finals, but at least he is playing a student from his academy this time. So it is going to be a fun one hopefully."</p>

<p>"The last three months and a half for me, the only thing that I can say is haven't been easy," said the Spaniard after his epic four-set win over old rival Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. "But I have to keep going." Nadal, chasing a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title to move two in front of Djokovic and Roger Federer, is working constantly to find a cure for the foot issue.</p>

<p>"If we are not able to find an improvement or a small solution, then it's becoming super difficult for me. I am just enjoying every day that I have the chance to be here, and without thinking much about what can happen in the future.</p>

Cilic, who reached his first semifinal at Roland Garros on Wednesday, joined the esteemed group that includes Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray, dug deep to seal a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(10-2) victory and reach the last-four stage at the clay-court Grand Slam."A fantastic achievement for me, and to be, they mentioned to be, just among them (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Murray), one of the only active guys with at least one semifinal on each Grand Slams," he said.<br />

Cilic attributed his achievement to his recent success on the clay court. "I would say, in the last few years coming back from 2017, I started to feel great on clay and then had some great success, but in the end, it`s also such a short season for clay, it`s difficult to time everything every single season. But I`m feeling great on the court, enjoying myself, being me, playing my own game and it`s paying off, and I`m just enjoying the run. And I obviously knew with my kind of level with my tennis in the last several years I`ve been playing, if I`m finding good form, good things are always happening. The Spaniard defeated world no.1 Djokovic in a thrilling four-setter in Paris to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. Nadal and Djokovic produced an enthralling contest which saw the two superstars give their all on the court in a bid to get the better of each other. Djokovic, the 35-year-old winner of 20 Grand Slam titles, conceded an early break to Nadal in each of the first three sets and had two set points in the fourth. But the Spaniard clinched the four-hour, 12-minute contest in the tiebreaker.</p>

<p>"I gave my best," Djokovic told reporters after his 6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6(4) defeat. "I know I could have played better. I`m proud of fighting and staying till the last shot.</p>

<p>"I lost to a better player today. Had my chances. Didn`t use them. That`s it. You know, over four hours` battle, and I have to accept this defeat."</p>

<p>Djokovic defeated Nadal, who has won 13 of his men`s record 21 Grand Slam titles on the Parisian clay, in last year`s semi-finals at Roland Garros before lifting the Musketeers` Cup for a second time in his career.</p>

<p>Nadal arrived in Paris this year after two injuries that had hampered his preparations and came into Tuesday`s contest following a tough five-set win in his last match. But he still found the stamina to beat Djokovic in their 59th career meeting.</p>
