Football fans took to Twitter as they expressed their opinions following Zinedine Zidane's open letter to supporters after leaving his role as the manager of Real Madrid. Zidane, in his letter, accused Los Blancos president Florentino Perez of lacking respect.&nbsp;

On the first day of June 2009, Zinedine Zidane strolled into an advisory role&nbsp;in the workplace of Florentino Perez, manager of Real Madrid. In November of the next year, he was designated as an adviser to Madrid's first group on the proposal of then Real Madrid manager, Jose Mourinho.

From brandishing director in 2011 to assistant mentor to Carlo Ancelotti in 2013 to the coach of Madrid's B group in 2014 and to being selected head coach of Real Madrid in January 2016, Zinedine Zidane's managerial career was an exciting ride, yet one focused on his previous club as he deliberately scrambled up from the lower part of the evolved way of life to the top.&nbsp;

It was new surrounding factors for him, strange waters, even, yet Zinedine Zidane was able to show the world that he actually got that sorcery wand he generally waved around on the field as a player. He was all set to compose another fantasy, yet this time around he was able to do it from the hole and, likely this time as well, do it with a glad consummation on the cards.&nbsp;

In an open letter to the Real Madrid fans he said:

"For more than 20 years, from the first day I arrived in Madrid and wore the white shirt, you’ve shown me your love. I’ve always felt that there was something special between us.&nbsp;"I have now decided to leave and I want to properly explain the reasons. I’m going, but I’m not jumping overboard, nor am I tired of coaching. In May 2018 I left because after two and a half years, with so many victories and so many trophies, I felt the team needed a new approach to stay at the very highest level. Right now, things are different. I’m leaving because I feel the club no longer has the faith in me I need, nor the support to build something in the medium or long term.”

Regarded as one of the most decorated Real Madrid managers in history, the 48-year-old Frenchman won three Champions League trophies, two Club World Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two Spanish Super Cups, and two LaLiga titles during his tenure with Real Madrid.&nbsp;Real Madrid won a trophy once every 23.9 games on average during Zinedine Zidane's two spells as manager.

Be that as it may, as the fans all the while commending the remarkable accomplishment of this perfectly tuned symphony of a football crew, Zinedine Zidane announced his resignation.&nbsp;

An enormous part of the football world wars tossed into stun, into absolute mistrust, at the breaking of this news. In any case, for the individuals who have meticulously followed his groundbreaking vocation from a splendid player to an incredible coach, they could just grin and cheer in enthusiasm for a man who has at last taken in his exercise.

He came, he saw, he conquered and he left. His legacy shall remain untouchable in football.

Football: 'He symbolises Real Madrid': Fans left gutted after Zinedine Zidane's open letter to supporters

Hungary will bank on its X-factor to emerge from the toughest group at Euro 2020 alongside defending champions Portugal and the past two world champions in France and Germany.

Hungary, 37th in the world rankings, are clear underdogs, but as Portugal will remember from the last European Championship, they can be difficult opponents.

They played out an exhilarating 3-3 draw with the Portuguese five years ago - taking the lead three times - en route to winning the group with victory over Austria and a draw against Iceland.

That appearance ended a 30-year absence from international tournaments, a dark age for a Hungarian side once considered the world's best and ranked third before crashing out of the 1986 World Cup.

Lacking big-name players, Hungary relies on solid defense and swift counter-attacks to pick apart opponents, though they have been plagued by inconsistency.

In qualifying for the tournament, they beat World Cup runners-up Croatia and Euro 2016 semi-finalists Wales, only to lose twice to Slovakia and finish fourth in the group.

Relegated to the Nations League, Hungary shone once again, beating higher-ranked opponents Serbia (in Belgrade) and Turkey twice.

"It will be a really strange European Championship," said&nbsp;football&nbsp;analyst Janos Kele. "The bigger teams are so World Cup focused that some of them are far from complete. Plus the coronavirus scheduling mess really hurt their planning."

Because of the pandemic delayed and complicated&nbsp;football&nbsp;seasons everywhere, the best players at the biggest clubs will get very little rest before the tournament, and even less time to prepare together.

In matches where exhausted players are thrown together to face lesser-known but fresher and well-coached teams, the difference in ability will be less obvious than usual.

"Rawer opposing game plans are a lot easier to pick apart," Kele said.

Cornerstones of the squad come from one Bundesliga club, RB Leipzig, including goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi and center-back Willi Orban, as well as Hungary's brightest star, midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

Hungary owes their Euro participation to a last-minute solo effort by the 20-year-old Szoboszlai which secured victory over Iceland in the qualification playoff.

Injured since January but now training fully, Szoboszlai should be fit for the tournament.

Italian coach Marco Rossi has boosted the squad with 16 new players and has built a reputation for making good decisions during games. Substitute Loic Nego scored the equalizing goal against Iceland before Szoboszlai's winner.

"Hungary is probably one of the most cohesive teams," said Kele. "This could be the Euro of surprises."

Luciano Spalletti has been named the new coach of Napoli, succeeding Gennaro Gattuso, the Serie A club confirmed on Saturday.

The vastly experienced Spalletti left his last role with Inter Milan in 2019 and enjoyed his most successful spell in Italy at AS Roma, where he won back-to-back Coppa Italias in 2007 and 2008.

Gattuso's widely-expected departure was confirmed this week after Napoli failed to qualify for next season's Champions League following a final day draw at home to Hellas Verona.

"I am delighted to announce that Luciano Spalletti will become Napoli coach on 1 July," Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis said in a short statement. "Welcome, Luciano - we'll do great work together."

Gattuso, who has since taken over at fellow Serie A side Fiorentina, succeeded Carlo Ancelotti as Napoli coach in December 2019 and led them to Coppa Italia glory in 2020.

Although his departure was far from surprising following a reported breakdown in his relationship with De Laurentiis, Gattuso has not discussed the matter recently as the club have imposed a media blackout since February.

UEFA on Tuesday opened formal disciplinary proceedings against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, the three clubs which are still refusing to give up the aborted Super League project.&nbsp;

"Following an investigation conducted by UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors in connection with the so-called 'Super League' project, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona and Juventus FC for a potential violation of UEFA's legal framework," said the governing body of European football in a brief statement.

UEFA appointed "ethics and disciplinary inspectors" on May 12 to conduct a preliminary investigation.&nbsp;

The other nine promoters of the Super League escaped prosecution in exchange for light financial penalties.&nbsp;

UEFA, challenged in mid-April by the launch of the proposed private European tournament at the same time as it announced a major overhaul of its Champions League, has long preferred to negotiate the surrender of the rebels rather than crack down.&nbsp;

But having failed to obtain a surrender from the three holdouts, has opted for disciplinary measures without specifying what offences they have committed.&nbsp;

UEFA's statutes prohibit any "grouping or alliance" between clubs without its authorisation.&nbsp;

Real, Barcelona and Juventus meanwhile retaliated through a Commercial Court in Madrid which referred the matter to the European Court of Justice, asking if UEFA was abusing its "dominant position" by seeking to block a competing tournament.

Football: UEFA opens disciplinary proceedings against hardcore Super League trio

Phil Foden already has eight major trophies to his name before his 21st birthday on Friday. The following day he may have the perfect present in Manchester City's first Champions League crown.

Born and raised in Stockport, just six miles (10 kilometres) from the club's Etihad Stadium, Foden is the homegrown hero among a star-studded international squad bankrolled by the Abu Dhabi owners.

The club that he first started training with as a six-year-old was very different. City had only recently returned to the Premier League after at one stage slipping down to English football's third tier.

"We had limited money, limited resources and we invested in people," City's former academy manager Jim Cassell told AFP ahead of Saturday's Champions League final against Chelsea in Porto.

Manchester United were used to having their pick of local talent, while City also had to fend off interest from Liverpool and Everton for a precocious talent nicknamed the "Stockport Iniesta" for his similarity to the wiry but silky former Barcelona and Spain midfielder, Andres Iniesta.

"Philip just looked different, he looked special," Cassell continued.&nbsp;

"He always had magnificent agility and balance. That's what made him special -- he used to manipulate the ball without touching it because of the way his body was."

The earliest City could officially register Foden was at under-nine level, but he continued to play for his local team, Reddish Vulcans, to foster his competitive spirit.

"We had a very challenging culture," Cassell said. "I've heard people say 'let them play, don't look at results', but when do you turn on the tap to be a winner?&nbsp;

"I don't go along with this 'don't worry about results'. We're in an elite programme. Elite is about being the best, it's about challenging yourself to be the best."

Foden's talent stood out, even to someone used to seeing the best young prospects in the world.&nbsp;

"You are the lucky guys who saw the first game, for the first team for Manchester City, of this guy," City manager Pep Guardiola told reporters after Foden made his debut as a 17-year-old in a pre-season friendly against United in Houston.

<h2>'Game changer'&nbsp;</h2>

Later that year he scored twice in the final of the Under-17 World Cup and was named player of the tournament as England triumphed in India.

Despite media clamour for Foden to play more at City as a teenager or go out on loan, Guardiola has bided his time, gradually increasing his minutes over the past three years.

This season he has established himself as a regular starter, scoring 16 goals and even displacing Raheem Sterling for the latter stages of the Champions League.

"Pep's seen something in him that we did as a six-year-old and he has managed him brilliantly," said Cassell.

"Everybody has been sat on their settees telling Pep Guardiola, 'Phil needs to play more, he needs to go out on loan'. Pep was strong, he stuck with it, he knew what he had and I think we all believe we've probably got a real superstar on our hands at Manchester City."

Off the field, Foden does not carry himself with superstar swagger.

Far from the glitz and glamour enjoyed by some Premier League stars, Foden spends his free time fishing with his Manchester United-supporting father, Phil senior.

"When people find out they say: ‘What a weird sport to enjoy’. They don’t understand," Foden told the City website on his teammates' reaction to his fondness for fishing.

“I think it’s really good after games when you have to rest your legs and I just find it really enjoyable."

But his talent has earned him great respect among his seniors in the City dressing room.

"Phil has become one of our main players. He improved in so many aspects of his game, mainly in taking the right decisions in crucial times which for such a young age is really impressive," said Ilkay Gundogan.

"He's one of the game changers for us and he can be one on Saturday."

"Philip just looked different, he looked special," Cassell continued. "He always had magnificent agility and balance. That's what made him special -- he used to manipulate the ball without touching it because of the way his body was." The earliest City could officially register Foden was at under-nine level, but he continued to play for his local team, Reddish Vulcans, to foster his competitive spirit. "We had a very challenging culture," Cassell said. "I've heard people say 'let them play, don't look at results', but when do you turn on the tap to be a winner? "I don't go along with this 'don't worry about results'. We're in an elite programme. Elite is about being the best, it's about challenging yourself to be the best." Foden's talent stood out, even to someone used to seeing the best young prospects in the world. "You are the lucky guys who saw the first game, for the first team for Manchester City, of this guy," City manager Pep Guardiola told reporters after Foden made his debut as a 17-year-old in a pre-season friendly against United in Houston. 'Game changer' Later that year he scored twice in the final of the Under-17 World Cup and was named player of the tournament as England triumphed in India. Pep was strong, he stuck with it, he knew what he had and I think we all believe we've probably got a real superstar on our hands at Manchester City." Off the field, Foden does not carry himself with superstar swagger. “I think it’s really good after games when you have to rest your legs and I just find it really enjoyable." But his talent has earned him great respect among his seniors in the City dressing room. "Phil has become one of our main players. He improved in so many aspects of his game, mainly in taking the right decisions in crucial times which for such a young age is really impressive," said Ilkay Gundogan. "He's one of the game changers for us and he can be one on Saturday."

Cristiano Ronaldo said he has realised one of the goals he set for himself when he joined Juventus in 2018 and valued everything the club had achieved this season despite their run of nine straight Serie A title coming to an end.

Ronaldo, 36, has one year remaining on his contract at Juventus but there has been a flurry of media speculation that the Portuguese forward could be leaving in the summer.

Juventus were deposed as champions by Inter Milan and only climbed into the top four on the final day of the campaign on Sunday (May 23) to secure Champions League qualification.

"This year we couldn't win Serie A, congratulations to Inter for the well-deserved title. However, I have to value everything that we achieved this season at Juventus, both in collective and individual terms," Ronaldo wrote in an Instagram post on Monday, May 24.

"The Italian Super Cup, Italian Cup and Serie A top scorer trophy fill me with happiness, mainly due to the difficulty they carry with them, in a country where nothing is easy to win.

"With these achievements, I reached a goal I had set myself since the first day I arrived in Italy: to win the championship, the Cup and the Super Cup, and also to be Best Player and Top Scorer in this great&nbsp;football&nbsp;country filled with tremendous players, giant clubs and a very own&nbsp;football&nbsp;culture."

The 36-year-old former Manchester United and Real Madrid player said he was delighted to have won major individual and team honors with clubs in three different countries.

Andrea Pirlo believes Champions League qualification will not be the decisive factor in whether Juventus decide to keep him on as coach for next season.

To clinch a top-four finish, the Turin club must win their final game in Bologna on Sunday and hope AC Milan or Napoli drop points in their games against Atalanta and Hellas Verona.

Failure to reach European soccer’s top club competition would be an enormous disappointment for Juve, winners of nine consecutive league titles before this season, and the situation has resulted in speculation that Pirlo will be replaced.

"I do not think the club will decide based on what happens tomorrow. I think they have an idea of what has been done over the season, what went well and badly," Pirlo told a news conference on Saturday.

"They do not take decisions based on the last match or on one result. It is up to them to decide we will see what happens.

"I like doing this job, it is normal that I would reconfirm my position because I like having this adrenaline and pressure.

"You need to feel the blood running through your veins and I want to continue working with this squad and this club."

Juventus travel to Bologna in a confident mood after beating Atalanta on Wednesday in the Coppa Italia final.

It marked a third consecutive win for Pirlo’s side since a 3-0 defeat by AC Milan earlier in May threatened to derail their top-four hopes.

"We believe. We were dead and buried after the Milan game, but picked ourselves up again. We did that on our own, but the results of other teams also brought us back to life,” Pirlo said.

"We must think first of all about ourselves, looking to play a great game and win, and then see what the others do."

Pirlo also addressed media speculation that Cristiano Ronaldo could depart Juventus if they fail to reach the Champions League.

"I see him still in a black and white shirt and focused," he said.

"He showed that the other night by making sacrifices and chasing because he wanted to win the cup."

Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic is confident he will have a fully fit squad to choose from when he settles on his final 26-man list for the European Championship on June 1.

Only Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Djibril Sow was struggling with a slight injury ahead of the start of the team’s preparations in Bad Ragaz next Wednesday.

“It isn’t a major problem,” said the coach at a news conference on Friday.

Key midfielder Granit Xhaka missed two games for Arsenal with a groin strain this month but returned as a substitute in Wednesday’s 3-1 win at Crystal Palace in a boost for the Swiss.

“He's in a good condition. The two-week break was good for him, even if you can never be happy about an injury. But Granit will come to us fully fit,” Petkovic said.

Petkovic named 29 players in a preliminary squad on Wednesday and intends to wait until the day of the deadline to submit his final selection when he will have to cut three players.

He called up three uncapped players among the 29 -- Gregor Kobel (Stuttgart), Dan Ndoye (Nice), and Andi Zeqiri (Brighton) -- and said they all had a chance to win a place in the final selection.

“These young players can get coaches in trouble - if they do their job well. I want to give new players the opportunity to gain experience," said Petkovic.

Before the last European Championship in France five years ago, he also chose a handful of youngsters to train with the squad in the build-up and was so impressed with the attitude of the then-teenage Nico Elvedi and Denis Zakaria, that he included them in the final squad list.

“It is important that everyone is ready for the first game and gives 120 percent. Then we just want to stay in the tournament as long as possible,” the coach added, admitting that missing out on the last 16 would be a disappointment.

Switzerland faces Group A games against Wales, Italy, and Turkey.

“We want to try to dominate and win - regardless of the opponent,” Petkovic said.

Their first game is against Wales in Baku on June 12.

Barely a week has gone by this season without Diego Simeone pronouncing his mantra of "one game at a time" and now it really rings true, with Atletico Madrid one match away from winning La Liga.

If they beat Real Valladolid on Saturday, they will be crowned champions for the first time since 2014 and few could argue given they will have been top of the table since December.

But Real Madrid are lurking, only two points behind, and ready to dip their neck over the line at the last moment. They have not led La Liga since October 17.

Real Madrid will have to win at home against Villarreal to have any chance but the omens looks good for Zinedine Zidane's side, given their opponents may not be at full strength.

Villarreal are in a three-way battle to finish fifth and sixth, with the team that comes seventh dropping out of the Europa League and into the new and less lucrative Europa Conference League.

But Villarreal could do even better and qualify for the Champions League if they defeat Manchester United in the Europa League final, four days after their game at Valdebebas.

"We will have an eye on the Manchester United game," said Villarreal coach Unai Emery on Wednesday.

A draw for Atletico could mean the top two are tied on points but that would see the trophy returned to Real Madrid, who would sneak it on head-to-head.

In some ways, Atletico might benefit from the situation being clear. They will almost certainly have win to claim the title and can look for victory from the start.

Valladolid might have been relegated already had results gone against them last weekend but instead they are still fighting to be the one team out of three that survives.

Huesca and Elche are the others scrapping to finish 17th, with both of them two points ahead of Valladolid, the trio sandwiched between already-relegated Eibar and Getafe, who are safe.

It means only a win will give Valladolid hope, a scenario that could play into Atletico's hands if it encourages their opponents to attack, opening the spaces that were denied by the defensive approach of Osasuna, who so nearly spoiled Atletico's chances last weekend.

Luis Suarez's 88th-minute winner, which completed a stunning turnaround after Renan Lodi equalised only six minutes before, had the feeling of a pivotal moment, a dramatic twist to prove decisive in who harnesses the prize.

Yet Real Madrid's priority on Sunday was survival and they beat Athletic Bilbao at San Mames to take Atletico to the last day, when the tension will be at its highest.

Simeone admitted "anxiety exists" among his players but in 10 years in charge he has tried to expunge the fatalist tendencies that haunted the club for so long.

Real Madrid have benefitted before, when Atletico conceded in the 93rd minute in the 2014 Champions League final in Lisbon and lost in extra-time. Atletico went close in the 2016 final in Milan too, only to be beaten by Real Madrid on penalties.

Now Simeone's team are within touching distance again, the difference this time that Real Madrid have no control, their own success now depending on what happens at the Jose Zorrilla stadium, 200 kilometres away.

Win or lose, it could be Zidane's final game in charge and there are serious doubts around the future of Ronald Koeman as well, ahead of Barcelona's last match against Eibar.

Barca's disappointing end to the season means they could even surrender third place if they lose while Sevilla will hope for the chance to overcome a two-point gap when they face Alaves on Sunday.

Real Sociedad in fifth are a point ahead of both Real Betis and Villarreal, the tussle for the Europa League still alive. Betis travel to Celta Vigo and Real Sociedad are at Osasuna.

Elche host Athletic Bilbao and to stay up, they will have to better Huesca's result against Valencia at Mestalla. Valladolid must beat Atletico and hope Elche and Huesca both lose.

Russia will allow foreign ticket holders for Euro 2020 matches in St. Petersburg to enter the country without a visa to attend the tournament, the local organizing committee said on Thursday (May 20).

Russia has limited foreigners' entry into the country because of the COVID-19 pandemic, only allowing citizens of countries with which it has resumed international flights to cross its borders.

"In the current difficult conditions, the movement of people has been severely reduced, and we were met with understanding by the federal authorities and were able to open the border to those who are coming to St. Petersburg for a soccer holiday this summer," local organizing committee CEO Alexei Sorokin said in a statement.

Sorokin added that tournament officials and participants would still need to comply with safety regulations and test negative for COVID-19.

St Petersburg residents interviewed by Reuters on Thursday were divided on the decision. One of them said that it could be good as long as fans are following the coronavirus safety rules, and the other said that during the global pandemic it could be better for supporters to watch games online.

The organizing committee also said that visa procedures for foreign officials from European soccer body UEFA, volunteers, media representatives and other tournament participants would be simplified.

St. Petersburg, which has confirmed it will fill its stadium to 50% of capacity for the European championship, is set to host seven matches, including a quarter-final. The 24-nation tournament kicks off next month after it was postponed by a year because of the pandemic.

The 2021 Copa America will no longer feature games in co-host Colombia after the South American&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Confederation (CONMEBOL) decided on Thursday (May 20) to move games away from the country after a wave of civil unrest there.

The 2021 tournament was due to be held jointly by Colombia and Argentina.

It was the first time in its 105-year history that a co-hosting model had been chosen but it appears weeks of protest in Colombia led to Thursday's decision.

The tournament features all 10 South American nations and was due to kick off in Buenos Aires on June 13 and culminate with the final in the Colombian city of Barranquilla on July 11.

"CONMEBOL guarantees the realization of the 2021 Copa America and in the coming days will inform on the relocation of those games that were to be held in Colombia," the organization said in a statement.

CONMEBOL rejected an appeal from Colombia to move the tournament to the end of the year.

Argentina earlier this week offered to host the whole tournament amid weeks of anti-government protests in Colombia which have killed at least 15 people.

Fifteen games had been scheduled for Colombia and 13 games are scheduled for Argentina.

Tear gas fired outside some Colombian stadiums during recent matches led to discomfort for players and condemnation from coaches and officials. CONMEBOL already transferred some games out of Colombia to Paraguay and Ecuador.

The protests that began in late April, originally against a now canceled tax plan, have led to food and gasoline shortages and stymied exports, the government said. Protest demands have expanded to include calls for a basic income, an end to police violence, and more opportunities for young people.

Blockades are still affecting roads in 17 of Colombia's 32 provinces and unions have called for more big protests on May 26 and 28.

This year's Copa America was originally scheduled for 2020 but was held over because of the spread of COVID-19.

The decision to strip Colombia of its games is a crushing blow to a nation that suffered a similar reverse in the 1980s when it was forced to give up the right to host the 1986 World Cup finals, which were moved to Mexico.

And in 2001, the last time Colombia hosted the Copa America, CONMEBOL was so worried about security there they canceled the tournament only to change their minds a few days later.

However, Argentina and invited guests Canada withdrew, citing their own concerns over security.

South America has been hit hard by the pandemic, with more than 444,000 people dying in Brazil, and new surges causing consternation in Argentina and Uruguay, amongst other places.

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez on Thursday announced a strict lockdown beginning on Saturday and lasting until at least May 31.

The move includes a ban on all sporting, religious and social events, in addition to closing schools and non-essential commerce.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson will leave the club at the end of the season after deciding to step down from top-flight&nbsp;football, the 73-year-old confirmed on Wednesday.

The much-traveled Hodgson joined Palace in September 2017 and has kept them in the Premier League for four seasons in a row. His assistant, Ray Lewington, is also leaving, Palace said.

Hodgson's final game in charge will be against Liverpool, one of his former clubs, at Anfield on Sunday.

"After more than 45 years of coaching I have decided that the time is right for me to step away from the rigors of top-flight Premier League&nbsp;football," Hodgson said.

"It's been a particularly rewarding period of my&nbsp;football&nbsp;life and career to have been able to spend these last four seasons with Palace.

"I feel now that at the end of another successful season, in which we have secured our Premier League status, the moment is right for me to step down from my responsibilities of being a full-time manager."

Hodgson's coaching career began in 1976 in Sweden and he went on to manage the likes of Inter Milan, Malmo, Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion, Fulham, the Swiss national team, and England.

He took England to the Euro 2012 Championship and the 2014 World Cup finals but left after his side were knocked out of Euro 2016 by Iceland.

While Hodgson has won no silverware in England he took Fulham to the Europa League final in 2010.

He commands huge respect in the game with Palace chairman Steve Parish paying tribute.

"It has been an absolute privilege and pleasure to work alongside Roy, who is both a magnificent human and an outstanding&nbsp;football&nbsp;manager," he said.

"His record with us simply cannot be overstated, he is the only Palace manager to secure four years in the Premier League and he has helped give us stability in the most turbulent of times. We'll be forever grateful for his immense contribution."

Hodgson's last home game in charge of his boyhood club will be on Wednesday when 6,500 Palace fans will be allowed in to say a fond farewell to one of the game's greatest servants.

While saying he is stepping away from top-flight&nbsp;football, Hodgson did not rule out remaining in the game.

"I have had so much support from my wife and family throughout my career and I have been contemplating this decision for some time, and now I believe the time is right to consider them and to see what the future holds for me," he said.

The 42-year-old former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is one of the early favorites to be named as Hodgson's successor.

Portugal's&nbsp;football&nbsp;league has scrapped plans to welcome fans back into stadiums for the final round of fixtures on Wednesday.

In a statement released on Monday, the Liga Portugal cited the timing and uncertainty surrounding requirements that the country's health authorities will set out, as well as questions over fairness given only home teams would be allowed fans.

"In today's meeting, Board members unanimously decided that conditions will not be met for test-pilot events to take place and thus they are not authorising the return of fans," a Liga Portugal statement read.

"Given the uncertainty remaining about the conditions that health authorities will put in place, it would be impossible to prepare an implementation plan just one day before the games take place.

"This important reason is also compounded by the fact that the penultimate round of games did not have any fans in the stadiums.

"Now, given different objectives are still up in the air, allowing only one of the teams to have fans in the ground would be a grave distortion of sporting integrity and fairness amongst the sides."

The statement did, however, confirm the league would begin talks with the relevant authorities to ensure that fans could return to grounds for the beginning of the 2021-22 season.

Earlier this month Sporting won their first Primeira Liga title since 2002 but the relegation places are still to be decided with three points separating second-bottom Farense from Portimonense in 14th. Nacional have already been relegated.

This is the first season where there will be a relegation playoff, with the team that finishes third from bottom pitted against the third-placed team in the second division.

Porto's Estadio do Dragao stadium is due to host this season's Champions League final on May 29 between English clubs Manchester City and Chelsea.

European&nbsp;football's showpiece event was scheduled to be in Istanbul but UEFA shifted the final to Porto after Turkey was placed on the British government's red-list for travel, meaning English fans would not have been able to attend.

The 50,000-seater stadium will house 6,000 supporters from each team.

Portugal on Monday allowed British tourists to re-enter the country without undertaking a period of quarantine and is also on the UK's green list for travel.

Tottenham Hotspur interim manager Ryan Mason is reluctant to single out players for praise but said the performance of midfielder Dele Alli in Sunday`s 2-0 Premier League win over Wolverhampton Wanderers deserved special mention.

Alli, often overlooked by former manager Jose Mourinho but who has started the last three games under Mason, showcased his attacking skills and tricks as well as getting stuck in with defensive duties to help Spurs climb to sixth in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old will likely have made a good impression on England coach Gareth Southgate, who was among those watching at the stadium as he looks to put his squad together for the European Championship.

"I can`t speak in terms of what Gareth is thinking," Mason said of Alli.

"But for me, Dele was excellent. I don`t really like singling out players but it`s hard not to.

"He ran, he pressed, he created opportunities. I`m sure he`s disappointed he didn`t get a goal himself but it was an excellent No. 10 performance so I`m really pleased."

Sixth place should be enough to qualify for the Europa League next season, though Spurs are level on 59 points with West Ham United with two games left.

Spanish fans of both&nbsp;football&nbsp;and music breathed a sigh of relief on Monday after La Liga announced a third set of fixture changes in 12 hours to ensure no matches overlap with Saturday's Eurovision Song Contest.

La Liga has now moved all games involved in the title race, the relegation struggle, and the battle for places in next season's European competitions to 6:00 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Saturday.

The Eurovision Song Contest, which usually draws a global television audience of around 200 million, starts three hours later.

In the first fixture change, La Liga brought forward Eibar's match with Barcelona from Sunday to Saturday following Eibar's relegation. Just over an hour later, the match was moved back to its original time because it transpired the result could have an impact on who else is relegated.

In a third change, La Liga said on Monday it was rescheduling several other matches, including bringing forward Villarreal's match against Real Madrid from Sunday to Saturday.

Villarreal Director Fernando Roig Negueroles had earlier accused La Liga of showing a "lack of respect" by not rearranging the match to allow his club more time to prepare for the Europa League final against Manchester United on May 26.

The match against Real, who are still in the title race, will now go ahead on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. - the same time as title rivals Atletico Madrid, who sit two points above their city rivals, travel to Valladolid.

Juventus’ 3-2 win over champions Inter Milan in the 'Derby of Italy' kept their Champions League qualification hopes alive, but the game was overshadowed by a string of contentious refereeing decisions.

Referee Gianpaolo Calvarese awarded two penalties to Juventus and one to Inter and sent off players from both teams, Rodrigo Bentancur and Marcelo Brozovic.

Tensions ran high at the end of the match, when Inter’s 83rd-minute equalizer was ruled out for a foul before the decision was overturned following a VAR review, only for Juve to almost immediately regain the lead when they were awarded and converted a penalty.

The various decisions sparked a huge debate in the media, while Brozovic reacted on social media by calling it a “scandalous match”.

Juve captain Chiellini was later fined 1,500 euros for his protests to Calvarese during the game, while Inter assistant manager Cristian Stellini said at full-time: “the episodes are so clear and evident that it is useless to even comment on them”.

Juventus remain fifth, one point behind Milan in third and Napoli in fourth ahead of the final round.

Milan squandered the chance to book a place in the Champions League for the first time since 2013-14 as they stuttered to a 0-0 draw at home to Cagliari.

They face a tricky trip to Atalanta on the final day, while Napoli host Hellas Verona and Juve go to Bologna.

ATALANTA SECURE TOP-FOUR SPOT

Atalanta became the first club to join Inter in the Champions League next season after a typically entertaining 4-3 win over Genoa made it impossible for fifth-placed Juventus to catch them due to the Turin club’s worse head-to-head record.

It was another remarkable achievement for the small Bergamo club, who will grace the competition for a third consecutive season despite having the 11th-highest wage budget in the division.

“It was difficult to think that we would reach the Champions League three years in a row, especially this season, because repeating the feat is never easy,” coach Gian Piero Gasperini told Sky Italia.

“The team had a great reaction from December onwards, despite very tough competition. This year feels even better than the others because it was the most difficult.”

INZAGHI NEEDS BROTHERLY LOVE

Filippo Inzaghi’s Benevento is perilously close to being relegated after conceding a stoppage-time equalizer to draw 1-1 against already-demoted Crotone.

Spezia and Cagliari’s top-flight security is now safe ahead of the final day of the season, but Inzaghi needs help from his brother Simone, coach of Lazio, to keep Benevento’s hopes of overtaking Torino alive.

Torino, in 17th, are three points ahead of Benevento below them but have a game in hand to come away to Lazio on Tuesday, where a draw would be enough for them to stay up.

If they lose, it will come down to a final-day clash between Torino and Benevento in Turin.

“Lazio will play their game, as Crotone did today despite being relegated. Unfortunately, it is no longer up to us,” Inzaghi said.

Talking points from the weekend in Serie A

Head coach Steve Corica is confident Sydney FC`s foreign strike force can give the defending champions a boost when action in the A-League continues through the up-coming international window.

Australia`s national team, the Socceroos, will play four World Cup qualifiers in Kuwait from June 3 to June 15, with coach Graham Arnold expected to name his squad for the trip to the Middle East on May 25.

A-League matches are scheduled to continue following the squad`s departure for Kuwait, and Sydney are expected to be among clubs affected by the call-ups.

But with Englishman Adam Le Fondre recently returning after a spell with Mumbai City to join Brazilian Bobo and New Zealander Kosta Barbarouses, Corica is hoping his side`s inconsistency up front can be overcome.

"That`s a very positive sign, that we`ll keep all the attacking players, which is good because that`s one area where we`ve probably lacked this year," said Corica.

"We`re not scoring enough goals, as much as we were last year, free scoring. It`s a bit of a problem this year."

Le Fondre was on target from the penalty spot on Saturday as Sydney edged Western United to sit in third place in the current standings, nine points behind leaders Melbourne City, as the battle for places in the post-season finals intensifies.

"You see how tight it is from second to eighth or ninth at the minute, so you need to start picking up three points," said Corica.

"That helps to take a bit of pressure off and it puts pressure on other teams to do it.

"City are well out in front at the minute and it would be hard to peg them back but you want to finish in second spot if you can`t finish top so that`s the plan."

Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne scored to help his side beat 10-man Fiorentina 2-0 and move into provisional third place in the Serie A table on Sunday as they chase a Champions League spot.

The win leaves Gennaro Gattuso’s side on 76 points, one point ahead of AC Milan and Juventus in fourth and fifth respectively, before Milan host Cagliari later on Sunday.

Napoli will be guaranteed a place in next season’s Champions League if they win their final game of the season at home to Hellas Verona next Sunday.

Juve had beaten champions Inter Milan on Saturday to move above Napoli, who therefore travelled to Florence needing a victory to ensure they would go into the final round of fixtures in one of the four Champions League qualifying positions.

Napoli were frustrated by the 13th-placed hosts in the first half as goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano kept out Piotr Zielinski's strike and Insigne’s free-kick rattled the bar, while Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic had a header ruled out for offside.

The breakthrough came after 57 minutes when Napoli were awarded a penalty for a shirt pull at a corner following a VAR review, and Viola substitute Bartlomiej Dragowski was shown a straight red card for protesting the decision.

Insigne’s tame spot kick was saved but he fired home the rebound, and the Italy winger was close to a second when denied by the woodwork again with a low shot that struck the post.

Napoli doubled their advantage on the 67th minute when Insigne laid off a pass to Zielinski, whose first-time strike took a big deflection off Lorenzo Venuti on its way in and was awarded as an own goal to wrap up the points.

Napoli tighten grip on top-four spot with Fiorentina win

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers hailed the "historical achievement" of his side in beating Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday to lift the FA Cup for the first time in the club's 137-year history.

Youri Tielemans's sensational winner was witnessed by 22,000 fans at Wembley.

The largest crowd for a sports event in England since the coronavirus pandemic hit 14 months ago were treated to a goal worthy to win any trophy as the Belgian midfielder blasted into the top corner on 63 minutes.

Five years after the Foxes stunned the Premier League's giants to become champions, Leicester have now claimed English football's other prestigious trophy at the fifth time of asking.

Four times they had previously lost the final, but the last of those was 52 years ago.

"It's a historical day for the football club," said Rodgers. "Winning the FA Cup for the first time. I'm so happy for the players and suppporters. They've lost four finals and now a fifth time we've managed to do it for them."

A historic week for Rodgers's men could get even better as they are on the verge of sealing a place in next season's Champions League.

The sides meet again in three days' time at Stamford Bridge in a pivotal clash to decide who secures a top-four finish in the Premier League.

And Rodgers suggested his side were the neutrals favourites as they aim to upset the applecart of the Premier League's 'big six' once more.

Chelsea were among the clubs to sign up to the failed, quasi-closed European Super League (ESL) project last month, along with Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal.

"The success of this team and club is getting to positions like this and competing. The so-called bigger clubs are expected to win but our success is competing and if we can perform like today we can go and win," added Rodgers.

"After everything that has happened this year, I'm sure there were people hoping from a neutral perspective that we could go on and upset the odds."

Chelsea need a quick response after losing for just the fourth time in 27 games since Thomas Tuchel replaced the sacked Frank Lampard in January.

The Blues also have a Champions League final to look forward to against Manchester City in two weeks' time, but could end the campaign without silverware or a place in Europe's premier club competition next season.

"Of course we are disappointed but we are not angry," said Tuchel. "This performance was enough to win it, today we are simply unlucky. You need luck in this game to be able to win"

Chelsea's success under Tuchel has come thanks to an excellent defensive record, but their struggles at the other end were again exposed as they rarely threatened until going behind.

The welcome return of noise echoing down from 6,000 fans of each side from both ends of the ground helped mask a general lack of quality on the field for the first hour.

One moment of magic proved decisive as Tielemans collected possession midway inside the Chelsea half and strode forward before unleashing an unstoppable strike into the top corner past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Tuchel flexed the strength in depth of his squad in an attempt to find an equaliser as Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Olivier Giroud and Christian Pulisic were all introduced off the bench.

But they were denied by the brilliance of Kasper Schmeichel in the Leicester goal.

Chilwell, whose every touch was booed by the Leicester support, twice nearly came back to haunt his old club as his first effort was turned onto the post by the Dane.

Mason Mount then could not believe his luck as his sweetly struck shot was turned behind by a brilliant stop from Schmeichel.

Even when the Leicester 'keeper was beaten, Chelsea were denied by a VAR review.

Wes Morgan's attempted clearance deflected in off Chilwell, but the England international had strayed offside in the build-up.

"Thank you VAR! What an amazing technology," said Tielemans.

Leicester players and fans celebrated the decision like a goal and were in raptures again moments later after seeing out a nervy finale.

UEFA Women's Champions League final will see either Chelsea or Barcelona crowned champions of Europe for the first time, and though the Catalan club are hot favorites, the London side are also on a roll.

Barcelona crushed everyone in their path en route to the Primera Division title, winning all 26 of their league games this season and scoring 128 goals while conceding only five.

Chelsea may not have been as dominant in winning the FA Women's Super League last week but having won three trophies this term, Emma Hayes's side are full of confidence as they face the 2019 runners-up in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Hayes said it was a dream leading her ladies, who she says are inspiring a new generation of boys and girls alike, as they march into the final.

"They're amazing women that are inspiring generations… And I'm not talking about little girls here. I'm talking about scores of boys too that are becoming big fans of women's&nbsp;football," Hayes said.

"And being in this final, after so many years with an English team not participating, I think it was about time and I'm just delighted that we got the opportunity to do that," she added.

The Londoners have skillful forwards in Sam Kerr, Fran Kirby, and Pernille Harder and they'll be testing their more direct and physical approach with Barcelona's possession-and-passing style.

Barcelona coach Lluis Cortes said his said are hungry for the crown after losing 2019 final 4-1 to Lyon in Budapest.

"We all have renounced so much so we can focus on our project, which is, becoming the best in Europe. That was our goal, our challenge, and we're on the right path," Cortes said.

"Since 2019 we've been working super hard so that we could get another chance and get to another Champions League final. Last year we were knocking on that door, and I think this year everyone is convinced we have a chance," added goalkeeper Sandra Panos.

When I was a kid, Van der Sar was one of the best keepers, and obviously playing with David has been great, so I'd have to put David in there” - he said. Rashford settled on England defender Rio Ferdinand at the back and picked an attacking lineup with Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Wayne Rooney in front. The Manchester United no. 10 showed his humble side by excluding himself in the setup. “At the back, I'd have Rio Ferdinand. I'm all-out attack there. I'd have Paul Scholesy in front of Rio, Ryan Giggs on the right, Ronaldo on the left, and Rooney in front. I'm not putting myself in. Not yet” – he added. Marcus Rashford is a Rooney fan and uncovered that he savored the chance to play close by Manchester United's record goalscorer. The goals have flowed for Matt Derbyshire since the Englishman arrived at A-League debutants Macarthur FC, but it has been his impact beyond his scoring that has most impressed coach Ante Milicic.

The 35-year-old netted twice on Friday in a 3-1 win over Melbourne Victory to take his season's tally to 13 in 22 games since joining from Omonia in Cyprus, and Milicic has been delighted with the performance of the ex-Blackburn Rovers forward.

"He's been excellent," said Milicic, whose side moved up to second in the standings with the win.

"Everyone talks about his goals but his numbers are phenomenal. He works constantly, he starts our press, he's vocal in the change room, he always wants to score.

"He helps the young boys, he's excellent for the young boys who have been given opportunities around our football club.

"He got what he deserved tonight, two well taken goals and he's pleased, but we expect that and he expects that from himself. He's a quality striker and his career has shown that."

Despite his scoring record, Derbyshire rarely receives the praise afforded to other overseas arrivals, although Milicic stressed the 35-year-old is well respected within the Macarthur set-up.

"We all appreciate the work that he does for us, on and off the field and we're very fortunate to have him in the A-League I believe," he said.

Macarthur, who joined the A-League at the start of the current campaign, trail leaders Melbourne City by nine points but are continuing to push to be one of the six clubs who qualify for the end-of-season finals.

"What we've done now is we've put ourselves in a position where we don't need to rely on others," said Milicic.

"We just need to focus on ourselves. There's four games to go and we'll take it one game at a time. Everything's in our hands and I'm just pleased for the boys tonight that they got the win."

Chelsea forward Fran Kirby was on Friday named the&nbsp;Football Writers' Association's Women's&nbsp;Footballer of the Year, making her the first player to win the award twice.

The 27-year-old Kirby, who was the inaugural winner of the honor in 2018, scored 25 goals and provided 18 assists in all competitions to help Chelsea win the FA Women's Super League title and reach the Champions League final.

Chelsea revealed last year that the England international had been out of action since November 2019 because she had been diagnosed with a heart condition called pericarditis.

She returned after six months on the sidelines.

Kirby's personality and attitude had unified fans and media professionals, said Jen O'Neill, the chair of the FWA's women's sub-committee.

"To have overcome a serious health condition and return in such sparkling form is admirable and inspiring," O'Neill said in a statement http://footballwriters.co.uk/editorial/fran-kirby-is-womens-footballer-of-the-year.

"Several players, including many of her Chelsea teammates, have been outstanding in a superb WSL season but there are fewer more joyful sights in&nbsp;football than a smiling, fit, and firing Kirby."

The winner is chosen by a panel of more than 30 experts who specialize in the women's game.

Kirby can help Chelsea add to their trophy haul, which also includes the League Cup, when the club faces Barcelona in Sunday's Champions League final in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Doctors are predicting that Netherlands defender Daley Blind will recover from injury and be ready for the European Championship, coach Frank de Boer said.

The 31-year-old was included on Friday in a provisional squad that De Boer named for the tournament despite not playing since March when he hurt both his ankle and knee in a World Cup qualifying win over Gibraltar.

Blind had surgery to repair torn ankle ligaments, ruling him out of the rest of the Dutch league season, but is in line for a return next month.

"We assume that Daley will make it, given the forecasts of the doctors," said De Boer. "He is also positive about it. But it may be that he is only available during the tournament if he suffers a setback."

Blind's experience could be key for the Dutch in the tournament, where they are drawn against Austria, North Macedonia, and Ukraine, especially after Virgil van Dijk ruled himself out earlier in the week after deciding not to risk his recovery from a long-term knee injury.

"It is especially sad for him. He has never played a final tournament. But the European Championship is just too early for him," said De Boer.

"Let's hope we qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, so he can be there."
