Watford secured promotion to the Premier League on Saturday with two games to spare, after a 1-0 win over Millwall in the second-tier Championship at Vicarage Road. Watford has secured an immediate return to the top flight -- which has been worth at least 160 million pounds ($221.3 million) in previous seasons -- having finished second-bottom of the Premier League in the 2019-20 campaign. Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane hailed interim manager Ryan Mason for settling the team and securing his first win following Jose Mourinho's departure and hoped that the club can celebrate with the League Cup on Sunday.

Spurs sacked Mourinho on Monday after 17 months in charge of the London club and six days before they face Manchester City in the League Cup final. They appointed former midfielder Mason as caretaker boss until the end of the campaign.

After his first game in charge ended in a 2-1 Premier League victory over Southampton on Wednesday, Mason described a feeling of "massive relief" and Kane backed his former teammate to take the next step.

"Ryan's been great. It's been strange for him, a bit of a roller-coaster coming in at late notice and taking on the job," Kane told Sky Sports.

"He's done incredibly well; how he's handled the whole situation, how he's handled the boys, and obviously getting his first win against Southampton was a massive moment.

"It's given everyone a buzz going into the cup final. I and Ryan are good mates, we've known each other a long time, on and off the field we are really close.

"I'm buzzing for him to have this opportunity and to have the experience to manage one of the best clubs in the world. Hopefully, we can try and win on Sunday and experience a truly special moment together."

Harry Kane said he enjoyed a great relationship with Mourinho and wished the Portuguese well.

"I was surprised (by Mourinho's sacking). I probably found out 5-10 minutes before it was announced," Harry Kane said.

"But he knows as we know football can be cut-throat and we just have to look forward. We have a big final to prepare for now and we're looking forward to that."

Newcastle United substitute Joe Willock equalised in the dying seconds of stoppage time to earn his side a precious point in a 1-1 draw away at Liverpool on Saturday that dented the home side`s Champions League qualification hopes.

Liverpool had opened the scoring at Anfield inside three minutes when Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark failed to clear a cross, allowing forward Mohamed Salah to control the ball and fire a left-footed half-volley into the roof of the net.

But despite dominating the ball possession and making 22 attempts on goal, Liverpool failed to extend their advantage.

Newcastle forward Callum Wilson had a strike ruled out for offside in the 90th minute but Steve Bruce`s side continued to pile on the pressure.

They were rewarded in the 95th minute when Willock found the net for the third league match in a row with virtually the last kick of the match.

"We pushed hard in the second half. Apart from the sloppy goal we gave away, I thought the boys did really well," Willock, who is on loan from Arsenal, told BT Sport.

"Hopefully, it is more the performance we need to keep up. I don`t feel like we were showing what we can earlier. What we are showing now is brilliant, and if we continue like that we will be safe for sure."

The result left Liverpool in sixth place, one point behind both top-four rivals West Ham United and Chelsea who meet at the London Stadium later in the day.

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara said the team must show hunger to deserve a place in next season`s Champions League.

"We have no words to explain the disappointment we have," he said. "We had a lot of chances to win in the first half.

"It doesn`t change that we want to win and want to be in the Champions League but for that we have to deserve to be there."

Newcastle stay 15th in the table but they are now nine points clear of the relegation zone.

Even if Tottenham Hotspur break their 13-year trophy drought by winning the League Cup on Sunday it might not be enough to satisfy the ambitions of captain Harry Kane, former Spurs defender Jonathan Woodgate said.

Kane, who broke into the Spurs' team in 2014 and has scored 219 goals in all competitions, signed a six-year extension in 2018 but British media have linked him with a move to a host of top clubs, including Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Spurs came up short in the League Cup final in 2015 and the Champions League final in 2019 but Kane, 27, will have another shot at silverware when they face Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday.

Woodgate, who scored an extra-time winner for Spurs against Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final, said the club needed to start delivering trophies given the talent within the squad.

"They have to (win trophies now) in terms of the stadium they have built and with the players they have got," Bournemouth manager Woodgate told British media.

"They've got the best striker in England with Harry Kane so they need to start winning trophies for him."

Woodgate said Spurs had to show Kane they were serious about challenging for titles by bringing in more quality and that a Cup win might not be enough to stop his head from being turned.

"I'm not sure, I think they'll need more investment," said Woodgate. "He's been unbelievable again this season, scored so many goals and even evolved as a player by making so many assists. He's an incredible talent."

Interim manager Ryan&nbsp;Mason&nbsp;hopes Tottenham Hotspur's talismanic striker Harry&nbsp;Kane&nbsp;will have recovered in time from an ankle injury to face Manchester City in Sunday's&nbsp;League&nbsp;Cup&nbsp;final.

Harry Kane&nbsp;missed Spurs' come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Southampton on Wednesday after picking up an injury in last week's 2-2 draw with Everton -- Jose Mourinho's last game before his dismissal.

Mason, at 29 the youngest ever Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;manager, has been put in charge until the end of the season and stands one win away from being the unlikeliest of men to end Tottenham's trophy drought.

Juande Ramos was the last Spurs manager to deliver silverware in the 2008&nbsp;League&nbsp;Cup.

Mason's chances of emulating the Spaniard would improve considerably if Harry Kane&nbsp;is&nbsp;fit&nbsp;to lead the line. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

"With Harry, it is just about taking it each day as it comes," said&nbsp;Mason&nbsp;after the victory over Southampton.

"We know he is doing absolutely everything he can to be back out on the football pitch.

"On Wednesday he wasn't but hopefully by the end of the week we will know a bit more about that."

Spurs' victory kept them in the race for a Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;place next season -- they are two points off fourth-placed Chelsea though their London rivals have a game in hand on&nbsp;Mason's side.

He is delighted, though, to go into Sunday's match against the holders and runaway&nbsp;league&nbsp;leaders with a morale-boosting win after a traumatic week.

Mourinho's sacking on Monday and&nbsp;Mason's appointment at his boyhood club, for whom he made 70 appearances, came amidst a torrent of fan fury at the club signing up to the European Super&nbsp;League.

By Tuesday Spurs had backed out of the proposed breakaway&nbsp;league.

When&nbsp;Mason&nbsp;leads Spurs out at Wembley it will be another remarkable chapter for him after having to retire aged just 26 due to a fractured skull, an injury which almost killed him, while playing for Hull.

"When you go into a big game like Sunday it is always ideal to go into it with a win," he said.

"I thought the manner in which we won the game says a lot about the group, the belief, the commitment, the energy. It was outstanding in the second half and I am very proud of the group for the effort they showed."

Real&nbsp;Madrid coach Zinedine&nbsp;Zidane&nbsp;hailed forward Karim Benzema after the Frenchman's double in their 3-0 victory over Cadiz sent them top of La Liga.

Karim Benzema's goals also put him at level with club legend Raul Gonzalez as having scored against 35 different La Liga opponents throughout his career in Spain.

"I'm&nbsp;really pleased with what he's doing. He's such an important player for us, for our game, not only scoring goals, but he helps bring so many others into play,"&nbsp;Zidane&nbsp;said.

"We are enjoying him and I&nbsp;really hope&nbsp;Real&nbsp;Madrid can continue enjoying him a lot longer.

"He's so important for getting in between the lines, and he can be found so easily. And then when he scores, perfect."

Karim Benzema netted the opener from the penalty spot - the first time the reigning champions have been awarded a spot-kick in La Liga since October - after VAR spotted a foul on Vinicius.

He then showed the other side to his game as his run and cross teed up Alvaro Odriozola for a maiden senior league goal.

The victory took the Real&nbsp;top of the table on 70 points, above Atletico Madrid - who have played a match fewer - due to their superior head-to-head record.

Gravitas: The 'Super League' saga

Top English and Italian clubs were strongly linked again on Sunday to a breakaway European Superleague, a rival competition to UEFA`s Champions League which could have massive ramifications for the game.

UEFA is due to sign off on its own plans for an expanded and restructured Champions League on Monday but less than 24 hours before the meeting reports emerged of a new attempt at creating a rival competition involving the continent`s top clubs.

The board of Italy`s Serie A league held an emergency meeting on the threatened Super League. Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan have been linked with the breakaway in media reports.

A Serie A source told Reuters that the league had recently become aware of the plans for a breakaway project.

Shortly after the Serie A meeting finished, The Times newspaper reported that five of England`s top clubs had signed up to the plans for a breakaway.

The paper said Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to join the new league.

The only member of the "big six" not to have signed up is Manchester City, the paper said, citing sources with knowledge of the development. Other media reports said City were part of the project.

Neither City, nor any of the other Premier League clubs immediately responded to requests for comment.

20-TEAM LEAGUE

There have been reports of a breakaway for a number of years and they returned in January with several media reported a document had been produced outlining the plans for a 20-team league including Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

In October, then Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said the club had accepted a proposal to join a breakaway league.

In January, Spanish league president Javier Tebas told Reuters that Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Liverpool had been the driving forces behind the project, adding that it was vehemently opposed by other clubs in Spain and worldwide.

Those reports led FIFA and UEFA to warn that they would ban any players involved in a breakaway from playing in the World Cup or European Championship.

The move is a surprise after the European Club Association (ECA), which represents 246 of the continent`s leading clubs, gave their backing to UEFA`s reforms which are on the agenda for Monday`s executive committee meeting.

UEFA has proposed an increase to 36 from 32 teams, and an overhaul of the group stage into a single table rather than the current groups of four clubs.

Teams would play 10 matches each in the group stage rather than the six they currently play and a playoff round would also be introduced before the last 16.

But while there has been a broad consensus and those reforms, the ECA made a late push to have changes to the governance and control of the competition.

Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward told investors last month that he expected such an outcome.

"We look forward to seeing the full final proposal from UEFA that we anticipate will include a greater involvement of clubs in the governance and control of the competitions," Woodward said.

The ECA is already involved in UEFA’s club competition structures, including the second-tier Europa League through a joint company, known as "UEFA Club Competition SA" or UCC.

UCC is a subsidiary company of UEFA where half the members of the board are appointed by the governing body and the other half by the ECA.

It was created following the signing of a five-year agreement between UEFA and the ECA in 2018, a deal which will run out before the proposed new Champions League format begins in 2024.

20-TEAM LEAGUE There have been reports of a breakaway for a number of years and they returned in January with several media reported a document had been produced outlining the plans for a 20-team league including Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. \Police Scotland are seeking to prosecute Slavia Prague defender Ondrej Kudela for racially abusing Glen Kamara in a Europa League encounter last month, the Rangers midfielder`s lawyer said on Thursday.

Kamara complained of being racially abused by Kudela during the second-leg of a last-16 tie where Rangers were eliminated and Europe`s soccer governing body UEFA banned the Czech defender for 10 matches on Wednesday.

"Today Police Scotland confirmed that a case against Ondrej Kudela was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal for consideration, relating to a match played between Rangers and Slavia Prague on March 18," Kamara`s lawyer Aamer Anwar said in a statement.

"The police believe they have sufficiency of evidence for a criminal charge of `racially aggravated conduct` by Kudela, towards Glen Kamara," Anwar said.

Kudela could be fined or even sentenced to up to six months in prison of both if found guilty, Anwar said.

Police Scotland were expected to question Kudela when he was set to travel to London to play Arsenal in the quarter-finals last week, but the club said he was not fit to travel, with UEFA handing him a provisional one-match suspension hours later.

"It is disappointing that to date Mr Kudela has failed to co-operate with Police Scotland, has not attended any police interviews, and has failed to provide a full statement to Police Scotland," Anwar added.

"We would strongly urge Mr Kudela to co-operate with officers carrying out their investigations into his alleged criminal conduct."

Reuters was unable to immediately reach Kudela`s lawyer for comment.

While Kudela said he was "startled" by UEFA`s ruling, Slavia President Jaroslav Tvrdik said the club respected the verdict and apologised to Kamara for "a situation that has clearly caused distress to him and his team mates".

British sports chiefs say they would accept the introduction of coronavirus "vaccine passports" as a means of allowing full capacities at stadiums.

In a letter to lawmakers, a number of bodies including the Football Association, Premier League, Rugby Football Union and England and Wales Cricket Board said current social distancing rules would be "insufficient to end sport's Covid financial crisis".

Test events are being launched over the coming weeks as part of the government's roadmap out of lockdown, with an FA Cup semi-final and the FA Cup final among pilot events for a "Covid status certification" scheme.

The system would show whether people had been vaccinated, had antibodies for Covid-19 or had tested negative.

Vaccine and testing passports are opposed by a group of MPs but Prime Minister Boris Johnson and opposition leader Keir Starmer are among several politicians to be told by sporting organisations that they are a "credible option" to achieve full venues.

"All of our sports can see the benefit that a Covid certification process offers in getting more fans safely back to their sport as quickly as possible," the joint letter says. "We know that our stadia can only be fully filled with an assurance process.

"This process must ensure that everyone can access stadia and must include arrangements that would verify a negative Covid test or an antibody test or vaccination certification.

"The final approach must not be discriminatory, should protect privacy, and have clear exit criteria."

Under current plans, from May 17 stadiums in England will be allowed to open with a 25-percent capacity limit, up to a maximum of 10,000 spectators.&nbsp;

The current plan is for all restrictions on social contact to be lifted on June 21.

Britain has administered around 32 million first vaccine doses -- around 60 percent of the adult population -- in one of the world's most successful inoculation drives.

But even with the swift rollout, full venues at major sports events are understood to be unlikely until late in the English sporting summer at the earliest.

Premier League executive director Bill Bush told the BBC on Friday that a certification system was necessary in the absence of unrestricted access to stadiums.

"The alternative (to certification) is not freedom," he said. "The alternative is social-distancing, tiny crowds, major restrictions on people's movement and ability to eat, drink, travel. Away fans banned, for example.

"So to end those restrictions of freedom, we believe that something like this is an acceptable burden to give fans the freedom to attend."

A government spokesman, responding to the letter, said: "We welcome the constructive approach from major British sports as we explore how testing Covid certification and other steps can help get more fans back into stadiums and other large events safely.

"We want as many fans as possible to be able to enjoy a great British summer of sport, safely."

This month`s League Cup final between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur will be allowed to host 8,000 spectators as part of pilot events to pave the way for the return of large crowds to stadiums, the British government said on Sunday.

The final will be held at London`s Wembley Stadium on April 25. It was due to be played on Feb. 28 but was pushed back in the hope that a later date would allow fans to attend.

"The Department of Culture, Media and Sport has given the green light for 8,000 spectators to attend as part of the UK Government`s Events Research Programme," City said in a statement.

Tickets will be made available to both Tottenham and City fans as well as local residents around the stadium and the National Health Service (NHS) workers.

The trial, to be run at nine events including the FA Cup final and one semi-final, will be used to assess whether large events can be held in closed settings without social distancing.

The FA Cup semi-final between Leicester City and Southampton on April 18 will be allowed to host an audience of 4,000, while a crowd of 21,000 will be permitted for the final on May 15. Both matches will be held at Wembley.

World Cup Qualifiers: Belgium hit eight, seven for Dutch, Portugal survive scare

Cristiano Ronaldo was left fuming after Portugal were controversially denied a late winner at the weekend in the World Cup qualifier against Serbia. The Portuguese skipper received a yellow card for his protests and at the final whistle, he stormed off the pitch and threw his captain's armband to the ground.

A steward at the stadium picked it up and immediately contacted a regional sports channel with the idea of auctioning it for charity. He told AFP that he suggested raising funds required to treat a six-month-old baby, Gavrilo Djurdjevic, who is suffering from a rare disease.

"He (Ronaldo) threw the armband three metres away from me, and the idea immediately occurred to me that this (sale) could be a good opportunity," the man told AFP by phone.

"I realised we had some attention and could do something nice for Gavrilo", he added.

Four-times winners Germany enjoyed a 3-0 win over Group J rivals Iceland in Duisburg thanks to goals from Leon Goretzka, Kai Havertz and Ilkay Gundogan.

The German team followed the example of Norway on Wednesday in making a protest before the start of the game, lining up in Tee-shirts spelling out "Human Rights". The 2022 World Cup finals will be held in Qatar, who have been criticised by human rights groups.

"We want to make it clear to society that we are not ignoring this but say clearly what the conditions are," Goretzka told RTL television.

After the Norway protest, FIFA said it would not be sanctioning the team, saying it supported free speech.

The Germans took the lead after a delightful move as Joshua Kimmich found Serge Gnabry with a perfectly weighted pass and he touched it back for Goretzka to volley home in the third minute.

Havertz made it 2-0 after another defence-splitting pass from Kimmich released Leroy Sane who squared it back for the Chelsea forward to curl in a low shot.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored twice and Ollie Watkins marked his debut with a goal as England crushed San Marino 5-0 at Wembley.

San Marino, who have never won a competitive game, held out for 13 minutes before James Ward-Prowse opened his England account with a smart finish and Calvert-Lewin made it 2-0 with a header.

Raheem Sterling made it 3-0 just after the half-hour mark at which point it seemed England might run riot.

But San Marino's mostly part-time players dug deep with Calvert-Lewin's second goal the only addition to the score until substitute Watkins slotted in late on as England moved top of Group I.

In Parma, Roberto Mancini's Italy had a tougher task but also made a positive start with a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland in Group C.

Two goals inside the first 39 minutes from Domenico Berardi and Ciro Immobile settled Italy's nerves as they look to banish the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Northern Ireland rallied in the second half, forcing Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into several saves.

FRUSTRATING NIGHT

A frustrating night for Spain in Granada began promisingly when Alvaro Morata opened the scoring for the hosts after 32 minutes, moments after Dani Olmo had rattled the crossbar.

However, shortly before the hour mark, substitute Inigo Martinez - on for captain Sergio Ramos - was penalised for a rash tackle on Greek midfielder Giorgos Masouras.

Anastasios Bakasetas smashed the ball in from the spot to stun Luis Enrique's side.

Robert Lewandowski struck a thunderous 83rd-minute equaliser as Poland fought back to earn a 3-3 draw with Hungary in a pulsating Group I game in Budapest.

Hungary led 2-0 thanks to goals from Roland Sallai and Adam Szalai before a triple substitute inspired a rapid revival from Paulo Sousa's side with Krzysztof Piatek and Kamil Jozwiak making an instant impact.

Piatek connected with a low cross from Gregorz Krychowiak to beat Peter Gulacsi and moments later Hungary's defence crumbled, allowing Jozwiak to slot the ball into the net.

Hungary regained the lead through Willi Orban only for Bayern Munich forward Lewandowski to earn his side a point with a rasping drive.

Jonas Wind inspired Denmark to a 2-0 win over Israel in Tel Aviv, with his flick setting up Martin Braithwaite for a clever chip for the opener. Wind volleyed the second after the break, his third goal for his country in his fifth appearance.

Scotland twice came from behind to snatch a 2-2 draw with Austria in Group F.

A spectacular overhead kick from John McGinn five minutes from time salvaged a potentially vital point for the Scots, who like Austria last qualified for the World Cup in 1998.

Germany, England, Italy win but Spain held in World Cup qualifying

Steven Gerrard said he was surprised by England coach Gareth Southgate's decision to drop Trent Alexander-Arnold from the squad for their World Cup qualifiers and described the Liverpool defender as the "best English right back in the country".

Alexander-Arnold was left out of Southgate's 26-man squad last week for this month's 2022 World Cup qualifying matches against San Marino, Albania and Poland.

The 22-year-old has been a regular in the England squad since breaking into the side ahead of the 2018 World Cup but Southgate said his form had cost him his spot.

Southgate has an abundance of options at right back and named Manchester City's Kyle Walker, Atletico Madrid's Kieran Trippier and Chelsea's Reece James for the upcoming games.

Rangers manager Gerrard, who spent 17 seasons at Liverpool as a player, said the defender needed support to get him back on track.

"I think Trent is the best English right back in the country," former England midfielder Gerrard told British media.

"One thing I've learnt from being a player is you can't always be 10 out of 10. When you do come off, you need that support, love and attention from your manager more than anyone else.

"So I was surprised by the decision but that's my opinion and my opinion is not important in this. Gareth Southgate makes the decisions there. I don't necessarily agree with that decision, but I’m not the England manager."

Xabi Alonso to be named the new manager of Borussia Monchengladbach: Reports

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters on Friday said that the English league could open gates for 10,000 fans for the final two rounds of matches this season.&nbsp;

Last month, the UK government set out a four-stage easing of England's COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. According to the third stage, very large outdoor stadiums will - if all conditions are met - from May 17 be able to have up to 10,000 people or 25% capacity, whichever is lower.

"Hopefully the final two fixtures of our season will have up to 10,000 supporters in them all," Masters was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"We've got to go past those first initial steps in the government's roadmap to get there, so hopefully that will be a fantastic finale to end the season."

May 15 and 23 are listed as the final two weekends of the Premier League season.

Masters said the suspension of the 2019-20 season and the absence of fans amid the COVID-19 crisis came at a heavy cost.

"Towards the end of this season we'll get towards 2 billion pounds ($2.78 billion) lost since the start of the pandemic in matchday and broadcast revenue," said Masters.

"Clubs have continued to invest in competitive match-day squads and the Premier League has continued to make good all of its contributions throughout the pyramid and wider football.

"But the ramifications are that ultimately if there's less money coming into football, then there'll be less money going out in the short term."

Should the vaccination programme in the UK go according to plan, Masters is optimistic football in Britain could be back to normal next season.

"From the beginning of next season, our goal is to have full stadia and the Government’s roadmap offers us that opportunity," he explained.

Masters went on to talk about 'No Room for Racism' campaign.&nbsp;

"You will see for the rest of this season more anti-racism messages on player's shirts and the continuation of taking the knee until the end of the season," he told Sky Sports.

"We will discuss with the players in the close season what we are going to do to continue to make our feelings clear about anti-discrimination messaging going forward."

'Fantastic finale': Premier League chief says fans can return by end of season

Chelsea&nbsp;moved into the Premier League's top four as Mason Mount's superb first-half goal earned them a 1-0 win at champions Liverpool who suffered a club-record fifth straight home league defeat on Thursday.

Mount cut in to curl a low shot past Liverpool keeper Alisson in the 42nd minute, after Timo Werner had earlier had a goal disallowed, to give&nbsp;Chelsea&nbsp;a deserved halftime lead.

Thomas Tuchel's side then showed great defensive discipline to stand firm in the second period as Liverpool improved.

Liverpool, who substituted a disgruntled Mohamed Salah in the second half, struggled to carve out clear chances, though, and managed only one effort on target.

Chelsea, unbeaten since Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard in January, have 47 points from 27 games, one more than Everton who had briefly gone fourth by beating West Bromwich Albion.

Liverpool's title defence is in tatters and Juergen Klopp's side have slumped to seventh spot with 43 points from 27 games. Remarkably, their five successive home league defeats have come after they had lost none of the previous 68 games at Anfield.

"It's very tight around the top four and these big games we need to win," Mount said. "Tonight maybe we could have had a couple more goals. We had to be brave and win the ball back high and that's where the goal came from."

Tuchel is now unbeaten in 10 games in the Stamford Bridge hot seat and Thursday's victory was another tactical masterclass by the German who last week crafted an eye-catching 1-0 win at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

RELENTLESS PRESSING

His side's relentless pressing was too much for Liverpool in the first half, while they cleverly mixed up the angle of their attack to keep Klopp's side firmly on the back foot.

Werner should have put&nbsp;Chelsea&nbsp;ahead in the 12th minute but failed to connect with a volley and the German striker then latched on to a long pass forward and nicked it past the out-rushing Alissson before rolling the ball home.

Liverpool were spared by an agonisingly tight VAR offside decision on that occasion but did not learn their lesson.

Just before halftime N'Golo Kante's long pass found Mount on the left. The young midfielder cut in past Trent Alexander-Arnold and arrowed a right-footed shot inside the far post.

Liverpool did show more of their trademark intensity after the break but&nbsp;Chelsea&nbsp;were unruffled, although there was one anxious moment just after the restart when Roberto Firmino's cross struck the hand of Kante but they survived a VAR check.

Chelsea&nbsp;looked far sharper Hakim Ziyech had an effort cleared off the line while Werner also had the chance to make the points safe but was denied by Alisson.

Liverpool's only attempt on target came late on as Georginio Wijnaldum shot straight at Edouard Mendy while defender Ozan Kabak also had a half chance.

"It was a well-deserved win, a big performance and a big result," Tuchel said.

RELENTLESS PRESSING His side's relentless pressing was too much for Liverpool in the first half, while they cleverly mixed up the angle of their attack to keep Klopp's side firmly on the back foot. Werner should have put Chelsea ahead in the 12th minute but failed to connect with a volley and the German striker then latched on to a long pass forward and nicked it past the out-rushing Alissson before rolling the ball home. Liverpool did show more of their trademark intensity after the break but Chelsea were unruffled, although there was one anxious moment just after the restart when Roberto Firmino's cross struck the hand of Kante but they survived a VAR check. Chelsea looked far sharper Hakim Ziyech had an effort cleared off the line while Werner also had the chance to make the points safe but was denied by Alisson. Liverpool's only attempt on target came late on as Georginio Wijnaldum shot straight at Edouard Mendy while defender Ozan Kabak also had a half chance. "It was a well-deserved win, a big performance and a big result," Tuchel said.

Sevilla FC's Youssef En-Nesyri is having a good run with the club having scored 19 goals this season (in all competition). The La Liga hotshot has attracted a lot of attention from the Premier League and Serie A clubs.&nbsp;

According to 90min, Liverpool and Manchester United are asking to be kept informed of his situation at Sevilla after his impressive performances in La Liga this season, whilst West Ham also reportedly approached the January transfer window.

The Morrocan striker has shown promising signs ever since his arrival in January 2020. Inter are also keeping a close eye on Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, according to a Spanish media report.

Sevilla FC's sporting director Monchi replied to WION's query regarding En-Neysri's transfer rumours during a media interaction, where he said: "Well, we are worried about the present. Barcelona in the league, Barcelona in the cup. But En-Nesiry's performance as a striker is very good and a lot of other clubs are looking at him."&nbsp;

"But we are a club that historically, whenever there has been a very good offer, we've never been worried about selling players because we've always been able to have substitute or replacement in mind at the moment."&nbsp;

"We are working with a lot of different names. I don't have any specific name, the way I work is to have a series of names so that we can calmly study them all and make a decision together with the coach," he added.&nbsp;

In recent months, Sevilla FC has shown the potential to challenge Spanish giants (Barcelona and Real Madrid) and are in contention to win the La Liga. They reached the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League but suffered a home loss against Borussia Dortmund in the first leg. But the team will travel to Dortmund on March 10 hoping to turn the aggregate result in their favour.&nbsp;

During the conference, WION asked Monchi regarding any special strategy to stop in-form Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho in the upcoming fixture. He said: "We have to try not to make the same mistakes that we did on the first leg and then we will have to strengthen our virtues which maybe there weren't so obvious in the first leg. Not to make any mistakes and improve our football techniques."&nbsp;

Never worried about selling players: Sevilla's Monchi on La Liga hotshot En-Nesyri's future

Ferland Mendy put Real Madrid within touching distance of the&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;quarter-finals on Wednesday with the late strike that sank 10-man Atalanta 1-0 in Bergamo.

The French left-back's curling effort came four minutes from time in a last 16, first leg clash in which the hosts had to play a man down for over 70 minutes, giving Zinedine Zidane's side the advantage heading into the second leg in Madrid on March 16.

"We didn't have a great game tonight, but the most important thing was the result, scoring away was important for us," said Zidane.&nbsp;

"It's a very good result against an Atalanta team even at ten, because they defended very well.

"The tie is open. We are going to have a great return match."

Atalanta had attacked early but the game was transformed when Swiss midfielder Remo Freuler was harshly send off in the 17th minutes for tripping Mendy at the edge of the penalty area.

Gian Piero Gasperini's woes continued with forward Duvan Zapata limping off after half an hour with a muscular problem with midfielder Mario Pasalic coming off the bench.

"The game was ruined," said Gasperini.&nbsp;

"I don't know what would have happened 11 against 11.

"I just got banned for saying something in Serie A, if I say something now then UEFA will ban me. But this is football suicide.&nbsp;

"Enough of these referees who've never played a game and don't know the difference between a challenge and a foul."

<h2>Advantage Madrid&nbsp;</h2>

Spanish midfielder Isco got a rare start up front for injury-hit Real Madrid playing alongside Marco Asensio and Vinicius.

The 13-time European&nbsp;champions&nbsp;were without striker Karim Benzema due to an ankle problem with an injury list also including Sergio Ramos, Eden Hazard and Dani Carvajal.

"It's true that there are many casualties, but the players who are here are doing well, committed, every time there is a change we adapt," added Zidane.&nbsp;

But Zidane's side failed to truly make the most of the extra man despite coming closest to breaking through in the first half with a Casemiro header, with Nacho, Isco and&nbsp;Vinícius Junior also threatening and Luka Modric firing over.

Atalanta continued to attack, with Luis Muriel missing a chance to give the hosts the lead four minutes before the break with a long-range strike that went just wide.

Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini then kept the scores level when he stopped a Casemiro header on a free kick before the half-time whistle.

Josip Ilicic came on in place of Muriel after 56 minutes.

The Slovenian scored five goals against Valencia at this stage of the competition last season, but was substituted four minutes from time after a poor display.

Soon afterwards Madrid broke through thanks to Mendy, who beat Gollini with a stylish, curling effort into the top corner.

Madrid have the advantage going into the second leg having missed out on the quarter-finals for the last two seasons.

"Normally there are a lot of goals in games against Atalanta, we were expecting a difficult game but after the red it was normal they would defend deep," said Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.&nbsp;

Atalanta need a historic effort in the away leg to reach the last eight for a second successive year.

The Bergamo side won their last 16, first leg clash against Valencia 4-1 a year ago in front of 45,000 spectators in Milan's San Siro.

That match was considered to have been one of the reasons behind the acceleration of coronavirus in Italy with Bergamo at the epicentre of the country's outbreak.

The are in their second&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;campaign, but Wednesday's match was the first knock-out fixture in their home stadium which underwent renovations last season.

And thousands of fans ignored the Italian team's plea to stay away with a party atmosphere outside the stadium with a fireworks display.

Mendy's late strike puts Real Madrid in sight of Champions League quarters

&nbsp;Lionel Messi scored with two scorching strikes as Barcelona hammered Alaves 5-1 on Saturday in La Liga to warm up for their upcoming Champions League clash with Paris St Germain in style.

Portuguese forward Francisco Trincao put Barca in front after a cut-back from 18-year-old debutant midfielder Ilaix Moriba and Messi thought he had doubled the lead later on when knocking in on the rebound but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside against Antoine Griezmann.

Messi then took matters in to his own hands from outside the area and thumped the ball off the far post with such venom that it landed just inside the opposite post.

Alaves's Luis Rioja pounced on a mistake by Ilaix to reduce the deficit in the second half but Barca came roaring back with a second strike from Trincao, another long-range missile from Messi and then a fifth goal crafted by Messi and Griezmann and finished off by left back Junior Firpo.

A seventh consecutive league win took Barca up to second in the standings on 46 points, eight behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

"Messi is in a fantastic moment of form," said Barca coach Ronald Koeman.

"We know how decisive he is and right now he is in the mood. With him playing in this form, everything is easier. If we want to beat PSG, we need Leo and everyone else at the top of their game."

Barca had suffered a painful 2-0 defeat to Sevilla in Wednesday's Copa del Rey semi-final first leg and Koeman rotated his side to make for fresher legs for Tuesday's first leg at home to PSG.

He rested Jordi Alba and started without Sergino Dest, Ousmane Dembele and Pedri but there was no rest for Messi, who unleashed a ferocious shot for his first goal.

He also sparked the move for Barca's third goal, racing on to a through ball and attempting to round keeper Fernando Pacheco, who succeeded in snuffing out Messi but could only parry the ball into the path of Trincao, who tucked it into the net.

Messi was hungry for a second goal of his own, however, and got one less than 60 seconds later, dribbling past two defenders outside the area and rattling a left-footed shot into the far corner.

Now toying with his prey, he released Griezmann with a delicious chipped pass and the Frenchman sent in a low cross for Firpo to complete the thrashing.

Koeman expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance after making several changes and said they were feeling confident ahead of Tuesday's showdown against PSG, who will be without an injured Neymar.

"We believe we can get through the tie. They have some injuries but so do we and we'll have to play very well to knock them out," added the coach.

"We have to be more efficient than ever in attack and strong in defence. I'm sure it'll be a marvellous game."

Barcelona rout Alaves to fire warning shot to PSG

While the security forces at the US Capitol were busy trying to protect the building and the senators from the pro-Trump rioters, the secret service bodyguards had a bigger worry — protecting the 'football'.

During the Capitol riots, that took place on January 06, the Trump supporters had planned to attack the then-Vice President Mike Pence too. While their sole purpose was to injure the man who was declaring Joe Biden as the next President, there's a chance they could have got control of the codes of the nuclear weapons.

The dramatic and violence-filled footage from January 06 riots show how Mike Pence escaped the rioters from 30 metres. It also shows how an air force officer was carrying a large briefcase with nuclear launch codes, that could have been taken by the rioters.

"If the mob had seized Pence’s nuclear football, they may not have been able to order an actual launch but the public may not have known that," said Tom Collina, director of policy at the Ploughshares Fund disarmament advocacy group told a media house. "Parading the nuclear button around would have caused widespread panic and chaos as authorities scrambled to respond."

The briefcase, if seized by Trump's mob, would have given access to the rioters to the codes that are used to identify the vice-president and take his orders and also the encrypted communications equipment that is used to make the call to the National Military Command Centre in the Pentagon.

While the footage shown has increased questions about whether or not such codes and their control should be provided to one man, many also heaved a sigh of relief that the codes were not passed on to the rioters by the disgraced former US President Donald Trump himself. &nbsp;

Plans to reform the Champions League, expanding the competition from 32 to 36 teams and replacing the traditional group stage, face resistance over the allocation of the extra four places.

Europe's biggest clubs have been pushing for those places to favour the traditional powerhouses while smaller leagues and national federations want to see the spots open to them.

The new format, scheduled to begin in 2024, would see those places not available for teams in the qualifying rounds but distributed according to a yet to be agreed new method.

The European Leagues body, which brings together the continent's domestic competitions, is holding an extraordinary general meeting on Friday to discuss the plans after concerns that too much is being given to the big clubs and leagues.

Under the version of the plans discussed by UEFA, one extra place would go to the French league, while the others would be distributed according to UEFA's club 'co-efficient' rankings.

Sources say this aspect is causing concern among non-elite representatives as it would open the door to the Premier League, La Liga, the Bundesliga and Serie A having more than four clubs

The 55 national federations of UEFA will be given a presentation from the governing body next week while the European Club Association is also heavily involved in the talks.

The plan sees the replacement of the round-robin stage, where there are currently eight groups of four clubs with each team playing three opponents at home and away.

That format often results in 'dead rubbers' with the top teams qualifying with a game or two to spare.

UEFA wants to replace it with a single league table in which 36 clubs would play 10 different opponents and qualification would come from one league table.

The match-ups will be based upon a seeding system ensuring that each club faces roughly the same level of 'difficult' and 'easier' matches.

Under the plan, the top eight teams in the 36-team league table would qualify straight to the last 16 while the teams ranked 9-16 would playoff with those who finished 16-24 in a seeded format.

The inclusion of this playoff phase is designed to keep interest in the opening phase of the competition alive for as long as possible but it could result in a team that finishes 24th in a group of 36 advancing.

There is also expected to be intense discussion regarding the revenue distribution method from 2024.
