The Ukrainians started cautiously on Tuesday and let Sweden to pass the ball around. Despite dominating possession, Sweden didn`t pose a threat to Ukraine`s rock-solid defence with only Alexander Isak coming close to scoring with a long-range effort in the 20th minute, reports Xinhua.

Andriy Shevchenko`s side showed no mercy and clinically opened the scoring seven minutes later when Andrey Yarmolenko`s shot with the outside of the boot allowed Oleksandr Zinchenko to break the deadlock against the run of play.

The Swedes responded well with Ukraine goalkeeper Heorhiy Bushcan having to stretch to defuse Sabastian Larsson`s dangerous set-piece moments later.

Sweden continued to attack and were rewarded with the equaliser just before the break as Emil Forsberg got enough time and space to drill the ball from 23 metres past Bushcan into the bottom right corner.

After the restart, both sides came out motivated and created several chances as Serhiy Sydorchuk and Forsberg rattled the right post in quick succession.

Ukraine focused on counterattacks while Sweden remained a constant menace with Forsberg hitting the crossbar from 16 metres in the 69th minute.

Sweden had a golden chance to seal the deal in regulation time but Dejan Kulusevski missed the target from inside the box with only Bushcan to beat.

In extra time, Sweden suffered a huge setback when Marcus Danielson was sent off in the 99th minute.

Outnumbered, the Swedes defended well and hoped to take the match into a penalty shootout, but their resilience was broken in injury time as Zinchenko`s pinpoint cross into the box found Dovbyk, who nodded home the decider from close range.

"Both teams played very well. It was an interesting match. Neither side wanted to lose so we got this drama at the end. With this performance and commitment, our team has deserved the love of the whole country," said Ukraine head coach Andriy Shevchenko.

Ukraine will clash with England in the quarterfinal at Rome on July 3.

England's forward packed with attacking options remained steadfast against the Germans who lacked imagination at the front.

German coach Joachim Loew's side looked out of depth as Gareth Southgate's Three Lions dominated the last crucial 20 minutes as both sides looked to advance into the next stage.

French striker Kylian Mbappe has apologised for missing a crucial penalty due to which France crashed out of the Euro 2020 on Monday. The French striker failed to find the back of the net during the penalty shootout against Switzerland.

The 22-yer-old striker said that France were "incredibly sad" after exiting the tournament and that his miss would keep him awake at night.

"I'm sorry about this penalty. I wanted to help the team but I failed," Mbappe wrote on Instagram.

"It's going to be hard to sleep after this, but unfortunately these are the ups and downs of this sport that I love so much.

"The most important [thing] will be to get back up again even stronger for future commitments. Congratulations and good luck to the Swiss team."

Earlier, French head coach Didier Deschamps defended the PSG star and said that no one was angry at him.

"It will help everyone I think. Kylian, even if he didn't score a goal [at the Euros], he was decisive in many actions that we had, and he took responsibility to take this penalty," he told a news conference.

"No-one is really angry with him. I talked to our players, we know the strength of this team, we've had many magnificent moments together -- today it really hurts, there's lots of sadness," he added.

"The whole group is united in the dressing room. No-one talks about 'you made this mistake' or 'you made that mistake', Kylian knows his responsibility," added Deschamps.

"Today we were against a strong Swiss team, they gave us some problems in the first half, and of course France is used to having compact opponents," Deschamps explained.

"We scored our second goal in the second half which changed everything and, if you want, 10 minutes before the end we could have managed our two-goal advantage better."

Euro 2020- 'Wanted to help the team but I failed': Kylian Mbappe apologises for missing penalty

Amid all the recent recycling of England`s football tournament suffering at the hands of Germany, their Euro 2000 group stage victory in Belgium 21 years ago seems to have slipped from the nation`s collective memory - and with good reason.

Alan Shearer`s second-half goal secured England`s only tournament win over their old rivals since the 1966 World Cup final, but it proved a false dawn and instead did the defeated Germans a lot more long-term good.

As England and Germany prepare for Tuesday`s Euro2020 last-16 meeting at Wembley, their historical footballing relationship can effectively be divided into the period before the 68th minute of their 1970 World Cup quarter-final, and after.

England had triumphed in the 1966 World Cup final and looked to be cruising into the semi-finals in Mexico four years later via goals by Alan Mullery and Martin Peters in what would have been their eighth win in nine meetings with then-West Germany.

However, Franz Beckenbauer and Uwe Seeler levelled the match and Gerd Mueller won it for the then-West Germany in extra-time - and the balance of power shifted seismically.

Two years later the Germans knocked England out of the qualifying stage for the 1972 European Championship, which they went on to win, sparking decades of extraordinary success.

England were left on the outside looking in, not even making another tournament until the 1980 Euros - again won by West Germany - and when they did start qualifying, making little impact.

Finally, in the 1990 World Cup, they made the semi-finals, only to lose to eventual winners Germany on penalties. At Euro96 at Wembley at the same stage it was the same outcome.

Four years later the teams were drawn together in the group stage of Euro2000, but both got off to poor starts in the competition as England lost 3-2 to Portugal after being 2-0 up and Germany drew 1-1 with Romania.

The meeting in Charleroi proved to be a dire encounter, with one pundit likening it to a fight to the death between the last two dinosaurs on earth.

Freshly crowned world champions France, Italy, Portugal and the Netherlands were on a different level despite the presence of the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Michael Owen and Shearer in the England starting side.

Shearer`s 53rd-minute header from a Beckham free kick nevertheless had the nation rejoicing in an unheard of win over the Germans and had them well-placed to advance from the group.

That remained the case until the last minute of their final game against Romania when they conceded a last-minute penalty that enabled Romania to snatch a 3-2 win that sent them through at England`s expense.

The joy of the win over Germany was immediately forgotten, and the fact that the Germans were hammered 3-0 by Portugal to finish bottom of the group merely left the Charleroi success looking even more irrelevant.

Four months later Germany won a 2002 World Cup qualifier at Wembley, sparking the resignation of England manager Kevin Keegan.

Germany had also replaced the hapless Erich Ribbeck and, shamed by their Euros exit, had begun a root and branch review of their footballing development structure.

There was a considerable bump in the road when they were hammered 5-1 at home by England in the reverse qualifier in Munich in 2001, but it was the Germans who kicked on to reach the 2002 World Cup final, as England went out in the last 16.

That revolution of their youth system effectively delivered the team that won the 2014 World Cup, as England continued to fail to get past the quarter-finals anywhere.

The teams` last competitive meeting was in the last 16 of the 2010 World Cup and though England fell apart to lose 4-1, there remains a major "what if" consideration after Frank Lampard`s clear goal that would have made it 2-2 early in the second half was ruled not to have crossed the line after bouncing down off the bar.

That decision, just as the one in England`s favour for Geoff Hurst`s goal in 1966 final, will be endlessly discussed along with all the penalty shoot-outs as fans prepare for Tuesday`s game.

Charleroi 2000 may get less of an airing.

Euro 2020: Spain and Croatia make two changes each for last 16 clash

The Premier League said on Friday it is funding defibrillators at grassroots clubs and facilities to save lives if someone suffers a cardiac arrest in the wake of Christian Eriksen`s collapse at the European Championship.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder collapsed in Denmark`s group opener against Finland. His life was saved when CPR was administered to him on the pitch and his heart was re-started with a defibrillator before he was taken to hospital.

The league said "more than 2,000 sites will benefit" with the first 1,000 units of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to be delivered before the 2021-22 season begins.

"The traumatic incident we all witnessed when Christian Eriksen collapsed during Euro 2020 brings into sharp focus the need for defibrillators to be more widely available across the football community," Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said.

"The welfare of participants and all those involved in football is a priority and this fund will support many people using football facilities not just with the provision of devices but also the training required to use the equipment.

"Sadly, a sudden cardiac incident could happen anytime, anywhere and we hope by enabling more facilities to have a device, it will make the difference in saving someone`s life."

Eriksen was discharged from hospital after an operation to implant a heart starter device.

Former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba, who collapsed on the pitch in an FA Cup match in 2012 and was technically "dead" for 78 minutes, welcomed the initiative.

"I know from personal experience the importance of having access to this type of medical equipment and how vital it is for someone`s survival after suffering from sudden cardiac arrest," he said.

"Educating people how to use defibrillators is crucial."

Brazil went behind for the first time in eight games on Wednesday but responded with a controversial equaliser before netting a dramatic winner deep into stoppage time for a 2-1 victory over Colombia in the Copa America.

Brazil had won their previous nine games coming into the match in Rio de Janeiro, all bar one of them without conceding a goal, but they went behind in the 10th minute thanks to a wonder strike from Luis Diaz.

Juan Cuadrado swung in a cross from the right and Porto midfielder Diaz leapt acrobatically to volley an overhead kick past a helpless Weverton.

Brazil were forced to chase the game and they had most of the ball and almost all the chances, though Colombia did an excellent job of closing them down in the final third.

The hosts eventually got an equaliser with 12 minutes remaining, though it came in controversial circumstances.

With Brazil on the attack, the ball hit referee Nestor Pitana and as Colombia's players paused expecting him to order a drop ball the Argentine, who refereed the 2018 World Cup final, allowed play to continue.

Brazil took full advantage as Roberto Firmino headed home a cross from the left, with goalkeeper David Ospina letting the ball squirm through his hands on the night he tied Carlos Valderrama as Colombia’s most capped male player with 111 appearances.

The Colombian players were incensed but the goal was allowed to stand, even after a check by the Video Assistant Referee.

Colombian coach Reinaldo Rueda refused to be drawn on the decision other than to say, “I think the situation with the referee distracted our players.”

There was worse to come for the visitors.

Their protests after the equaliser led to 10 minutes of stoppage time being added, and in the 100th minute of the match Casemiro headed home from a corner to give Brazil the win.

Captain Casemiro said Brazil fully deserved the three points.

"Brazil deserve congratulations for their mental strength, for being well on top, and getting our reward in the end because we had the coolness to keep plugging away in search of a goal," he added. "That’s the mentality you have to have.

"They came forward once, scored a goal, sat back and it turned into a game of attack against defence."

Brazil had already qualified for the quarter-finals and with four points from four games Colombia join them. Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela are vying for the last two spots from the group.

In Sunday's final group games, Ecuador face Brazil while Peru play Venezuela.

Colombian coach Reinaldo Rueda refused to be drawn on the decision other than to say, “I think the situation with the referee distracted our players.” There was worse to come for the visitors. Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic was overjoyed to have steered his side into the Euro 2020 knockout stages after second-half goals from Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic helped them to a 3-1 Group D win over Scotland at Hampden Park on Tuesday.

Both teams needed a win to advance and after Callum McGregor cancelled out Nikola Vlasic's opener for the Croatians, Modric netted a superb long-range effort before Perisic sealed the win with a glancing header.

It was a much-improved performance by the 2018 World Cup runners-up after tepid displays in a 1-0 defeat by England and a 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic.

"Congratulations to the lads for an effervescent performance that propelled us into the knockout rounds and we will now be ready for whoever comes our way in the last 16," Dalic told a news conference.

"The most important thing is that we will be able to have our fans back because we are much stronger with them roaring us on from the terraces."

The Croatians, who face the Group E runners-up in Copenhagen on Monday, were cheered on by only a handful of fans in London and Glasgow as COVID-19 quarantine rules deterred many from making the trip to Britain.

With Croatian media speculating that Dalic would have been sacked if the team had suffered an early exit, the 54-year-old coach was relieved that his players delivered their best performance when it mattered.

"We were compact and although we let Scotland back into the game late in the first half, we talked things over at halftime and never lost our heads," he said.

"It was a matter of time before we scored the second and what a fantastic goal by Luka, it's amazing how he keeps going a at this level. I am proud to have him as the team captain."

Modric was emotional after a fine individual display reminiscent of his performances in the 2018 World Cup.

Football: Dalic delighted as Croatia step up to reach last 16 at Euro 2020

England delivered an efficient but hardly scintillating display to beat Czech Republic 1-0 with an early Raheem Sterling header on Tuesday to advance to Euro 2020's last 16 as Group D winners, with the Czechs through as one of the best third-placed teams.

Sterling scored his and England's second goal of the tournament in the 12th minute but the initial injection of pace, intensity and crowd-pleasing excitement brought by Jack Grealish and teenage man of the match Bukayo Saka gradually dissipated as the game petered out into an utterly forgettable second half.

Neither side will mind though as they now begin to plot their assaults on the knockout phase.

England return to Wembley on Tuesday to face the runners-up from Group E – likely to be France, Germany or Portugal - while the Czechs must wait to find out which group winner they play.

They were dislodged from second place by Croatia, who beat Scotland 3-1 and will play the Group E runners-up - Sweden, Slovakia, Spain or Poland – in Copenhagen on Monday.

On the positive side of England's balance sheet is two wins and a draw, three clean sheets, a return to Wembley and a good number of players getting a taste of the action.

Conversely, they have scored only two goals - the lowest by any team ever to top a Euros group - were sluggish and over-cautious for long periods of all three games and the midfield combination and approach seemingly remain anything but settled. They also face a potentially daunting last 16 game next.

"We are not fluent but we have moments where we look a good side," said England coach Gareth Southgate.

"The Czechs are a really good side. They use the ball well and are really tough to break down. There is more to come from us, definitely. We have not scored from a set play yet. They are crucial in big matches and we have to get those nailed.

"All of our next opponents will be different games but there are a lot of good things we are doing."

SHARP END

Sterling was at the sharp end of England's early attacks as they began full of energy. He struck a post in the second minute when he lifted the ball past advancing keeper Tomas Vaclik - the third time England had hit a post of the same goal early in each match.

Ten minutes later Sterling found the target with a close-range header from a delicious floated cross by Grealish after a driving run by Saka had splintered the Czech rearguard.

Making his first appearance of the tournament, the 19-year-old wide man showed a willingness to run with the ball that was painfully absent from England’s first two performances and, with Grealish a constant menace, the hosts looked more threatening.

Harry Kane looked sharper too and had a shot well saved late in the first half by Vaclik, but that early promise was gradually replaced by the all-too-familiar caution and England barely mustered another meaningful attempt.

The Czechs were neat and tidy without carrying a huge amount of penalty box threat, though Tomas Holes had a shot palmed clear by Jordan Pickford and Tomas Soucek fired just wide in the first half.

Substitute Jordan Henderson thought he had scored his first goal for England on his 60th appearance five minutes from time after a scramble, only to see it ruled out for offside.

Overall though it was desperately thin gruel for most of the second half, with the loudest cheers reserved for the big screen announcements of Croatia's goals that eliminated Scotland.

Spain were again haunted by their inability to finish off chances as they drew 1-1 with Poland on Saturday after missing a second-half penalty to leave their hopes of making the Euro 2020 knockout stage hanging in the balance.

Alvaro Morata gave Spain the lead in the 25th minute but Poland, who had hit the woodwork twice in the first half, deservedly drew level with a towering header from Robert Lewandowski in the 54th.

Spain were given a penalty soon after but Gerard Moreno blasted his shot against the post and Morata scuffed the rebound wide, leaving Luis Enrique's side cursing their profligacy just as in their goalless opening draw with Sweden.

Saturday's draw left Spain third in Group E with two points and needing a win against Slovakia on Wednesday to guarantee their place in the next round.

Poland are bottom with one point but head into their final game against Sweden with a chance of reaching the last 16.

"We are raging," said Spain captain Jordi Alba.

"We kept on trying until the end but were against a really tough opponent and we lacked a bit of luck."

Morata added: "It's another game that has escaped from our grasp and our next game will be like a final to get through."

Poland felt a huge sense of redemption after losing their opener 2-1 to Slovakia.

"Before this game, hardly anyone believed in us. But sometimes you have to take two steps back to take another one forward," said defender Kamil Glik.

"I'm glad that we will play the real final against Sweden and I hope that -- even if it's a bit late, the tournament started for us today."

SPAIN DIRECT

Spain played less fluid football than against Sweden but were more direct, while Poland showed far more ambition than the Swedes had and came close to taking an early lead when Mateusz Klich let fly from long range and struck the top of the bar.

But it was Spain who went in front when Moreno cut in from the right wing to cross with his stronger left foot and Morata diverted the ball into the net.

The striker was initially flagged offside but a VAR review gave him the goal and he ran to the sideline to embrace coach Luis Enrique, who has shown so much faith in him in the last two weeks after Morata was booed twice by Spain's supporters.

Spain nearly doubled their lead when Moreno flashed a free kick wide but Poland came within inches of equalising when Karol Swiderski's shot skidded off the post and into the path of Lewandowski, who was thwarted by a fine save from Unai Simon.

Spain should have struck again at the end of the first half when Moreno hit the side netting from close range.

Poland kept testing the Spanish defence and deservedly found a way through when Lewandowski soared to head Kamil Jozwiak's cross into the bottom corner.

Spain got an unexpected chance to restore their lead when Moreno was caught by Jakub Moder but Moreno, who scored all 13 penalties he took last season for Villarreal, hammered his spot kick against the post and Morata could not keep his composure either when the ball bounced towards him.

Luis Enrique's side kept looking for a winner but had none of their customary cool and resorted to long balls into the box.

They were not far from finding another goal though, substitute Ferran Torres heading wide and Poland keeper Wojciech Szczesny making two brave saves to thwart Ferran and Morata from point-blank range.

Euro 2020: Wasteful Spain held by Poland, face crunch final group game

Wales captain Gareth Bale dismissed Italy coach Roberto Mancini's comments likening the team to English club Stoke City and said they were ready to challenge them in Sunday's European Championship meeting in Rome.

Mancini, who spent 3-1/2 years as Manchester City manager between 2009 and 2013, is fully aware of the physical demands of a trip to Stoke who were a top-flight team then.

Ahead of Sunday's game, the Italian said Stoke had a very tough style of play and he expected a similar test from Wales, adding Bale's side also possessed the technical skills to trouble his team.

Asked for his reaction to Mancini's comments, Bale told a news conference: "I never knew Stoke were that good."

Wales interim manager Robert Page said that he was not bothered by the comparison.

"We're fully focused on what we can do and how we can hurt teams. As I've said, I couldn't be more proud of that (squad of) 26 and I'll back them every day of the week."

Italy are through to the last 16 after two wins from as many games, while Wales are also unbeaten in Group A with four points ahead of the final round of matches.

"It's going to be a big challenge. We have no doubt, even if that (unbeaten) record wasn't there, Italy are a big footballing nation and always make games difficult," Bale said.

"We're under no illusions, it's going to be a difficult game, but all we can do is plan, prepare and give it our all when we get on the pitch.

"... It's difficult to say where the game would rank if we won but it would for sure be a proud moment for all of us. A great result for Wales and one we're going to try and do."

Euro 2020: Digne only change for France in tested lineup vs Hungary

Denmark is determined to squeeze into the knockout stage of Euro 2020 with a win against Russia in their final Group B match on Monday, after recovering with poise from the shock of Christian Eriksen's cardiac arrest.

Despite losing 2-1 to a Belgian side aided by the return of Kevin de Bruyne, a flood of supportive messages for Eriksen and the catharsis of Yussuf Poulsen's early goal against the world's top side seemed to put the trauma of Denmark's opening match behind them.

Manager Kasper Hjulmand pledged that Denmark, who will benefit from a home advantage against Russia in Copenhagen, would beat Stanislav Cherchesov's side for Eriksen after he underwent an operation to implant a heart-starter device.

The Danish midfielder was discharged from hospital on Friday, six days after collapsing during his side's match against Finland.

Despite so far playing on home turf in St Petersburg, Russia has failed to rekindle the magic of their quarter-final run at the 2018 World Cup in matches that have highlighted a porous defense and a lukewarm attack.

Russia has not reached the knockout stage of a European championship since 2008. Their 1-0 victory against surprise qualifiers Finland on Wednesday was their first win since their opening match at the 2012 tournament.

Denmark, last in Group B with two losses, hopes to capitalize early on defensive lapses by Russia, with Mikkel Damsgaard filling in for Eriksen and forward Martin Braithwaite showing touches of quality against Belgium.

"We're going to get through the group stage," Braithwaite said after the loss to Belgium. "With this team, there are no limits."

To grab the second qualifying spot, Denmark is also relying on Belgium, who have already advanced, to beat Finland on Monday.

DEFENSIVE DRAWBACKS

A Russian win against Denmark, meanwhile, would guarantee them a spot in the knockout stage.

Cherchesov opted to play untested 22-year-old goalkeeper Matvei Safonov against Finland after Anton Shunin's shaky play against Belgium. He also benched defender Andrei Semyonov following an error-strewn performance in their opener.

Russia's lack of depth and the talent gap with Europe's top sides leave Cherchesov with few attacking options beyond captain Artyom Dzyuba.

Dzyuba, a towering striker who is one goal away from tying Alexander Kerzhakov's national team record of 30, has been scoreless in the tournament so far.

Against Denmark, Cherchesov could start Alexei Miranchuk, one of the few Russians who play in a top European league. The Atalanta midfielder, who came on in the 63rd minute against Belgium, scored Russia's goal against Finland.

"With this team, there are no limits." To grab the second qualifying spot, Denmark is also relying on Belgium, who have already advanced, to beat Finland on Monday. Emil Forsberg scored Sweden`s first goal of the Euro 2020 from the penalty spot as they edged out Slovakia 1-0 to boost their qualification hopes from Group E on Friday.

In a game which was short of clear-cut chances, Slovakia goalkeeper Martin Dubravka conceded a penalty in the second half when he tripped up Robin Quaison and RB Leipzig winger Forsberg made no mistake in beating him from the spot.

Sweden top the group with four points from two games, one ahead of Slovakia. Spain (one point) play bottom side Poland on Saturday while the final round of fixtures -- Sweden v Poland and Slovakia v Spain -- will be played on Wednesday.

Both teams threatened to score from set pieces early in the first half but Slovakia`s Juraj Kucka and Sweden`s Mikael Lustig saw their headers sail over the bar.

Sweden were compact at the back, as they were against Spain in their goalless opener, and it was centre back Victor Lindelof who was initiating their attacks with his distribution from a high defensive line, which was at times camped in Slovakia`s half.

Slovakia switched to a five-man defence when they were out of possession, frustrating the Swedes who were unable to string passes in the final third while Slovakia`s defence easily won the aerial duels.

Slovakia eventually made inroads into the final third towards the end of the first half as Sweden retreated but they lacked the creativity to make the final pass count and the first 45 minutes ended with neither goalkeeper tested.

ISAK RUNS THE SHOW

Sweden started the second half on the front foot, with Alexander Isak and Forsberg having shots blocked in the first two minutes.

At the other end, Ondrej Duda found space to pull the trigger at the edge of the box but saw his shot fly inches over the crossbar.

Sweden`s Ludwig Augustinsson brought the crowd to life at the hour mark when he directed a powerful header on target but he was denied by a fine reflex save from Dubravka, who tipped it over the bar.

Isak turned things up a notch, leaping high to win a header which drifted agonisingly over before his nifty footwork allowed him to make solo run from his own half past three defenders to curl an effort that was parried away by Dubravka.

The 21-year-old Isak then turned provider which proved fruitful when he released substitute Quaison, who drew a foul from Dubravka in the box and Forsberg stepped up to convert the penalty and seal the three points.

Euro 2020: Forsberg fires Sweden to 1-0 victory over Slovakia

UEFA has a contingency plan to replace Wembley as host stadium of the Euro 2020 final unless Britain agrees to exempt travelling foreign fans from 10-day quarantine rules, the European soccer governing body said on Friday.

Tournament organisers have been in negotiations with the UK government since it postponed plans to end COVID-19 restrictions on June 21 because of the rapid spread of the more infectious Delta variant.

The London stadium is scheduled to host the final of the competition, which is taking place in 12 cities across the continent, on July 11, as well as both semi-finals over the preceding days.

"There is always a contingency plan but we are confident that the final week will be held in London," UEFA said in a statement.

The Times newspaper reported on Friday that Budapest was the alternative venue being considered if Wembley was not able to accept travelling supporters.

A spokesman for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "We continue to look forward to hosting the semi final and the final here at Wembley."

While it would be a major surprise if UEFA took the unprecedented step of moving a major final at such a late stage, Budapest is hosting its four Euro 2020 games in full stadiums, having sold tickets to Hungarian fans who have been vaccinated or visiting fans with proof of negative COVID-19 tests.

The Hungarian capital also offered itself as an emergency venue for a number of Champions League matches last season when coronavirus restrictions caused complications elsewhere.

"The Hungarian organisers focus on hosting the four Budapest matches," a spokesman for the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) told Reuters.

"However ...MLSZ stands ready to host any high-level football event."

UEFA said discussions with authorities in London centred on allowing fans of participating teams to attend matches "using a strict testing and bubble concept that would mean their stay in the UK would be less than 24 hours and their movements would be restricted to approved transport and venues only."

UEFA said it understood the pressures the UK government faced. It hoped discussions would reach a "satisfactory conclusion" and was delighted that capacity at Wembley was scheduled to go up to at least 50% for the knockout round matches.

Under current regulations in England, fans travelling from countries on the government`s amber list must quarantine for 10 days on arrival, making it difficult for them to fly in for games.

Outside of the three British teams -- England, Scotland and Wales - all other competing countries are on the amber list, except for Turkey which is on the stricter red list. Those arriving from red list countries are required to spend 10 days in a managed quarantine hotel.

The UK government has agreed to increase capacity at Wembley to 50% for the knockout stage, meaning crowds of 40,000 rather than the group stage limit of 22,500.

Wembley will also host two round-of-16 matches with the second one, on June 29th, having a 50% capacity.

As well as access for foreign fans, UEFA is also keen that sponsors and VIPs from outside the UK can avoid quarantine.

"No decisions have been taken but we continue to look forward to putting on the semi-final and final at Wembley and we are working closely with UEFA," said Johnson`s spokesman.

Football: UEFA has contingency plan for London-scheduled Euro 2020 final

Hungary will leave everything on the pitch against world champions France in their Group F match on Saturday in Budapest, coach Marco Rossi said, noting wryly that the French team is worth 15 times more than his side.

"Of course if their squad are worth 900 million euros and we are only worth 60 million cumulatively, then we might actually see that difference on the pitch," Rossi told a press conference.

Hungary are the underdogs in a "Group of Death" with France, Germany and Portugal. They had been holding defending champions Portugal to a goalless draw until the 84th minute in their opener on Tuesday, only to concede three goals in the closing minutes.

It will likely stick to its customary defence-heavy tactics against another team boasting a world-class attacking line, Rossi said.

"When you come up against... players with so much pace on their side, pressing them high will afford them space behind, so you don`t want to stretch the pitch and have space between the different areas.

"If we set up in one way against Portugal it`s more than likely we`ll be in similar fashion against France," he said. "We need to produce a perfect performance form every perspective."

Rossi added that against such teams luck needs to be on Hungary`s side to achieve a surprise.

"We need to make sure, or hope, that France are off their game tomorrow," he said. "We would love to get a good result but I am even more interested in continued progress."

Hungary is widely considered a tough opponent even for top-class teams, with a solid defence and counter-attacks capable of surprising anyone - a far cry from much weaker teams in recent decades.

Rossi said his side, although unlikely to advance, must give their all against a French team that may well rest a few players in preparation for a deep run, possibly all the way to the finals.

He also said that even though the weather is expected to be extremely hot, the team must not allow themselves to succumb to fatigue.

"We need to run more without the ball than them," Rossi said of the expected French possession superiority. "This is going to be more difficult in the heat, so we need to make sure we run intelligently."

"We can`t be tired after just four days. We did everything to be rested... No excuses, no ifs, no buts, we are here and we will go out there, and there is no such thing as fatigue."

Euro 2020: Hungary must leave everything on the pitch against France - coach

Roberto Mancini has said it took "the end of the world" for him to become Italy coach but his side now appear to be in a brave new world following a classy 3-0 win over Switzerland on Wednesday that propelled them into the Euro 2020 knockouts.

After laying down a marker with a stunning second-half display in their opener to beat Turkey 3-0, Italy matched that scoreline but produced an even more assured performance.

Manuel Locatelli was an unlikely figure to give Italy the lead in the first half when he started then finished off a sweeping attack down the right wing and then scored again after the break before striker Ciro Immobile adorned another magical night at the Stadio Olimpico by netting late on.

Locatelli, who had never scored twice in a game before, was the symbol of a side short on household names but bursting with talent which is making its mark at Euro 2020 after their miserable failure to qualify for the last World Cup.

Italy's limp playoff defeat to Sweden in November 2017 ensured they failed to reach a World Cup for the first time since 1958 and prompted much soul-searching, with coach Gian Piero Ventura painted as the scapegoat and booted out.

Mancini, a Premier League and Serie A winner with Manchester City and Inter Milan but who has often been criticised for being too defensive, was an unlikely figure to lead the revolution the country was crying out for, but he has proved an inspired choice.

Italy may have shed their old defence-first persona under previous coaches such as Antonio Conte, but Mancini has taken them to the next level, building a hyper-pressing team that suffocate opponents in their own half.

Mancini may have kept faith with seasoned gladiators such as Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, who have a combined age of 70 and were the only survivors of the defeat to Sweden who played against Switzerland, along with Immobile and Jorginho.

But his side also sparkles with players boasting courage and athleticism.

Their opening goal against Switzerland was made by a combination of skill, pace and quick-thinking from Domenico Berardi down the right flank, beating a Swiss defender by the byline before arrowing a low pass at the feet of Sassuolo team mate Locatelli, who had started the move.

Locatelli, who struck again with a deadly strike from outside the area, has performed so well that Italy have barely missed their one star name in Marco Verratti, who was forced to sit out both their opening games due to injury.

Berardi was a handful for the Swiss down the right wing all game while left back Leonardo Spinazzola, one of the best players against Turkey, was equally dangerous down the other flank, making Italy an unpredictable and terrifying side who became the first to book their place in the last 16.

No team will look forward to meeting them next.

Maguire has been out for more than a month after picking up the injury in Manchester United's 3-1 Premier League win at Aston Villa on May 9.

The United captain missed their last five games of the season including the Europa League final, where they lost to Villarreal.

The 28-year-old was replaced by central defender Tyrone Mings in England's 1-0 win over Croatia at the weekend.

"I feel good," Maguire told British media on Wednesday. "I'm back available, I've been training and I'm looking forward to it.

"Obviously, the injury was a setback club football-wise. Internationally I wanted to come into this with a lot of games under my belt with full fitness.

"I've done a few sessions now and feel like my fitness is there, so I'm available for the game."

Maguire said he may have to play through some pain as he returns to full fitness.

"I'm sure it will niggle me for a few weeks and months," he said. "I haven't had an ankle injury before, but from speaking to players and physios, I'm sure it will be niggling.

"But as long as it's stable and the pain is bearable, then I'm sure I'll be fine."

Euro 2020: England's Maguire declares himself fit for Scotland game

France coach Didier Deschamps was happy with his team's commitment in Tuesday's 1-0 win over Germany at Euro 2020 but said the world champions must look to retain possession better through the rest of the tournament.

France handed a sluggish-looking Germany their first opening-game defeat in the Euros, courtesy of an own goal by Mats Hummels in the 20th minute.

Stats showed that France had just over 40 per cent possession and only four attempts on goal but Deschamps said they were more clinical than Joachim Loew's side.

"I wouldn't say that we did dominate them because we played against a good team in Germany who caused us problems," Deschamps said.

"They had a lot of ball possession, more than us. We were defending very well. It was a match played on a very high level, two titans facing each other.

"We could have done things better, especially in ball possession, and looking at the attitude to show this dominance, to suffer all together, when we showed this commitment on the pitch today against the very strong German side."

France midfielder Paul Pogba accused Antonio Rudiger of "nibbling" him on the shoulder during the game but said he was not looking for the Germany defender to face punishment.

The two players clashed towards the end of the first half, with Rudiger caught on camera putting his face close to Pogba's back before reaching his arms around the Frenchman's chest.

"I'm not crying for cards, yellow, red cards because of such actions," Pogba said. "He nibbled, I think, a little bit on me. But we have known each other for a long time.

"I told the referee and he takes decisions and he took a decision. It's over.

"It was a great match for us ... and I didn't want him to be suspended because of such a situation. It was towards the end of the match. We hugged each other and that's it."

Euro 2020: Deschamps happy with France spirit but sees room for improvement

Many people injured as parachute protest lands on football pitch before France v Germany

Some people doubted whether, after a long and arduous season, 36-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo could still produce the goods for his country, but after Portugal's 3-0 win over Hungary in their Euro 2020 opener on Tuesday, the doubters have their answer.

Portugal, the champions in 2016, came into the rearranged tournament as one of the favourites given the attacking talent at coach Fernando Santos' disposal.

Bruno Fernandes has enjoyed a prolific season at Manchester United and is already one of the club's most crucial players; Diogo Jota has hit the ground running at Liverpool; and Bernardo Silva played a crucial part in Manchester City's Premier League title win.

But as the Premier League trio flattered to deceive in front of a packed, boisterous crowd in Budapest, and Hungary's defence stood firm, Portugal again needed their relentless talisman to pull them through.

He left it late, but he did not disappoint.

It was also a case of another day, another record for Ronaldo. The penalty he converted to put Portugal 2-0 up in the 87th minute ensured he became the first player in European Championship Finals history to reach 10 goals overall, and then 11 with an injury-time strike, overtaking Michel Platini's record of nine - all scored in the 1984 tournament.

It had looked as though it was going to be a frustrating evening for the Juventus forward. He missed a glorious chance in the first half to open the scoring, with his team mates also lacking composure in front of goal.

Jota has now scored one goal in his last 11 matches for club and country, and was replaced in the second half, with the effects of his injury-hit season clear for all to see.

But after Portugal's fortunate opener six minutes from time, it was all about Ronaldo, who added a coolly taken third 177 seconds after firing home from the penalty spot.

The way in which he remained calm before rounding the goalkeeper for his second of the night proved that even when not at his best, his potency in front of goal, when it matters, remains as lethal as ever.

That is now 106 international goals for the veteran, three off the all-time record set by Iran's Ali Daei.

The desire for more goals and records remains stronger than ever. After this imposing start to the tournament, few would bet against Ronaldo surpassing Daei and adding one more accolade to his ever-growing list before Euro 2020 is out.

Some people doubted whether, after a long and arduous season, 36-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo could still produce the goods for his country, but after Portugal's 3-0 win over Hungary in their Euro 2020 opener on Tuesday, the doubters have their answer.

Russia will look to turn the page and forget about a stinging 3-0 loss to Belgium in a tepid performance on home turf, manager Stanislav Cherchesov said after Saturday's match.

Russia face long odds to progress from Group B, with inexperienced goalkeeper Anton Shunin and a lack of depth that often renders the team powerless against strong opposition.

"We are still in the tournament," Cherchesov told reporters "We chose our system, which worked partially but then started to break down. The Belgians scored and then it was difficult to get the ball off them."

Cherchesov said his players were demoralised by Romelu Lukaku's early goal and struggled to regain their composure.

"We would have wanted a better match, both in terms of result and performance," he said.

Despite missing midfield talisman Kevin De Bruyne, Belgium's attack toyed with Russia in a match that highlighted a big gap in quality between the two sides.

Confusion and sloppiness prevailed in Russia's defence, which collapsed under pressure from Belgium's forays as Thomas Meunier and Lukaku added further goals.

Russia's defeat coincided with a public holiday, souring the mood at the start of a three-day weekend.

Cherchesov said Russia needed to regroup before Wednesday's match against Finland, the surprise qualifiers who beat Denmark 1-0 playing in their first major tournament.

"We will get out of the situation," he said. "We put ourselves there, so now we must find a way out."

The Football Association have issued a statement asking England fans to respect the right of players to "take a knee" as a protest against racial injustice, and not boo them before matches at the European Championship.

England players were booed by some fans before two recent friendlies when they knelt - a protest borrowed from American NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and popularised by the Black Lives Matter movement.

"We encourage those that oppose this action to reflect on the message you are sending to the players you are supporting," the FA said ahead of England's opening match of the tournament against Croatia at Wembley on Sunday.

"Please respect their wishes and remember that we should all be united in the fight to tackle discrimination. Together. They will do their best for you. Please do your best for them."

England manager Gareth Southgate, who has participated in the gesture on the touchline, expressed his hope that the nation would unite behind the team during the tournament.

A YouGov poll published this week found that 54% of fans in England supported players "taking the knee" with 39% opposed.

Critics of the protest say it improperly politicises sport and they dislike the gesture's links to the organised element of Black Lives Matter, which some consider a far-left movement imported from the United States.

"Fans understand perfectly well ... they are there to watch a football match, not to be lectured on morality," said Brendan Clarke-Smith, a member of Parliament for the ruling Conservative Party.

The FA also released an emotional plea for fans to unite behind the players in a video on social media

"This is personally important to the players and the values the team collectively represents," the FA statement continued.

"It is not new, and English football has made it very clear that it does not view this as being aligned to a political organisation or ideology.

"There can be no doubt as to why the players are taking the knee and what it represents in a footballing context."

Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Saturday he thought it was "totally wrong" to boo the England team.

France striker Wissam Ben Yedder said the reigning world champions are in the toughest group at the European Championship and that they must make a strong start to their campaign against Germany in Tuesday's opener.

France, who defeated Croatia to lift the 2018 World Cup, are in Group F alongside title holders Portugal, four-time world champions Germany and 37th ranked Hungary.

"It's the group of death. There are really good teams," said Ben Yedder.

"We are going to start the competition with a lot of energy. We are really impatient to start the competition and we are going to give it our maximum.

"We have a really big game as a starting point and we know that we have to be solid together for the first match."

Defender Benjamin Pavard said France face a tough challenge against the Germans, who will be playing in front of their home crowd in Munich.

"The first match is very exciting against Germany," Pavard said. "It is not going to be an easy game against a very good German team. We are not going to put any pressure on ourselves."

Les Bleus are favourites to win the European showpiece, but Pavard said Germany and Portugal are also in contention for the title.

"We are one of the favourites but not the favourite," the 25-year-old said. "We can't just believe it is going to be an automatic win. We have to play match by match and we will see."

Argentina scored twice in the first eight minutes but could not withstand Colombia’s second-half pressure as the hosts rallied for a 2-2 draw in a thrilling World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni made five changes from the team that drew 1-1 with Chile last week and his side got the best possible start when Cristian Romero, playing in just his second international, headed home from a free kick inside three minutes.

Leandro Paredes made it 2-0 five minutes later when he dribbled through a pack of Colombian defenders and slipped the ball past the keeper.

Argentina controlled the first half but their dominance waned just before halftime after their goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was taken off the field on a stretcher with a possible head injury following a goalmouth clash.

Argentina struggled to contain Colombia's Juan Cuadrado as the hosts started to create more opportunities, with Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata both missing chances.

But they did get on the board five minutes into the second half after Argentine defender Nicolas Otamendi used an arm to flatten Mateus Uribe and Muriel converted the penalty.

Argentina too had chances but found Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina in inspired form, twice making great saves to thwart Lionel Messi.

“I think we had the chances,” said Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul. “They have a great goalkeeper. We’re not happy with a draw.”

Just when it looked like Argentina would hold on, substitute Miguel Borja grabbed a deserved equaliser when his header squirmed under the body of replacement goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin deep into stoppage time.

“Unfortunately, we leave with one point when we deserved all three,” said Scaloni.

The result leaves Argentina in second place behind Brazil in the 10-team South American qualifying group. The top four teams qualify automatically for Qatar 2022 and the fifth-placed side go into an intercontinental playoff.

Earlier on Tuesday, Peru got their first victory of the campaign with a 2-1 win in Ecuador. Christian Cueva put Peru ahead after 63 minutes and Luis Advincula made it 2-0 with a minute remaining.

Gonzalo Plata scored in added time for the home side, who had a penalty award rescinded by the Video Assistant Referee early in the second half.

England midfielder Jordan Henderson said fans who booed players for taking a knee before matches proved racism is still an issue and that the team will continue taking a stand against it during the upcoming European Championship.

There were jeers from a small section of spectators at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough when players took the knee before England's friendly wins over Austria and Romania last weekend.

"It shows that if there are still people booing because we're standing together against racism, then there still is a problem and we've still got to fight it and stand together," Henderson said before Sunday's opener against Croatia.

"It shows even more that we have to keep going, keep fighting it. From our side, it's about being together and doing what we think is right."

In an open letter to fans on Wednesday, coach Gareth Southgate said his team will not "just stick to football" during the Euros and that it was his responsibility to put debates such as racial awareness in the spotlight.

Henderson said the Three Lions are determined to lead the fight against racism but their focus was on playing football.

"Of course, everyone knows we stand together and you'll see that in taking the knee, but we want to get on with the football and concentrate on that," he said.

Lionel Messi scored a first-half penalty for hosts Argentina before Chile's Alexis Sanchez equalised as their World Cup qualifier ended 1-1 on Thursday.

Messi converted from the spot midway through the first half after Guillermo Maripan brought down Lautaro Martinez in the box. Chile striker Sanchez levelled in the 37th minute, finishing off a cut back from Gary Medel.

Chile keeper Claudio Bravo made a world class save to keep the scores level just before halftime, tipping a Messi free kick round the post.

Messi also saw a free kick come off the woodwork in the second half.

The match in Santiago del Estero was Argentina’s first competitive outing since November and both sides looked rusty.

Argentina pushed forward as the game went on but Chile's rearguard was solid, even without their talismanic holding midfielder Arturo Vidal, who missed out after contracting COVID-19.

Messi almost snatched all three points in the last five minutes but his shots could not find a way past Bravo.

The draw means Argentina are unbeaten at home against Chile in 35 matches, and have gone 12 games without defeat since losing to Brazil in the 2019 Copa America semi-finals.

"The positive aspect is that this team always stands up to be counted, tries to attack," Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni. "They (Chile) practically never created any chances."

Argentina are second in the 10-team South America qualifying group for Qatar 2022 with 11 points from five games, a point behind Brazil, who play Ecuador on Friday.

Chile are sixth, with five points from five games.

The top four teams qualify automatically for Qatar while the fifth-placed side goes into an intercontinental play-off.

Colombia got their second win in the qualifiers, a 3-0 victory at last-placed Peru.

Yerry Mina put the visitors ahead five minutes before the break and Peru's task became even harder when Miguel Trauco was sent off for a second yellow card offence on the stroke of halftime.

Mateus Uribe made it 2-0 just four minutes into the second half and Luis DIaz added a third six minutes later.

Colombia moved into sixth while Peru remain the only one of the 10 teams still to record a win.

He said: "For more than 20 years, from the first day I arrived in Madrid and wore the white shirt, you’ve shown me your love. I’ve always felt that there was something special between us. "I have now decided to leave and I want to properly explain the reasons. I’m going, but I’m not jumping overboard, nor am I tired of coaching. In May 2018 I left because after two and a half years, with so many victories and so many trophies, I felt the team needed a new approach to stay at the very highest level. Right now, things are different. I’m leaving because I feel the club no longer has the faith in me I need, nor the support to build something in the medium or long term.”

Carlo Ancelotti has returned to Real Madrid as head coach for a second spell on Tuesday after Zinedine Zidane resigned from the position last month. Previously, the Italian coach managed the Los Blancos side between 2013 and 2015.

Previously, the Italian coach managed the Los Blancos side between 2013 and 2015. Ancelotti left Premier League club Everton to re-join his former side (Real Madrid) on a three-year deal. “While I have enjoyed being at Everton I have been presented with an unexpected opportunity which I believe is the right move for me and my family at this time,” Ancelotti said in a statement on the Everton website. In his previous spell with Real Madrid, Ancelotti led the Spanish giants to 'La Decima', which means the 10th European Championship in 2014. He has won the European Cup or Champions League on three occasions, having also led AC Milan to glory in 2003 and 2007.
