Florida shooting: Gunman chased off Black university campus before targeting store

Tropical storm Idalia is nearing hurricane strength and is forecast to become a hurricane, as it continues to be on track toward the Gulf Coast of Florida after lashing western Cuba. To know more watch this interview with Meteorologist and atmospheric scientist Dakota Smith.

Tropical storm approaches Florida

The US forecasters have said that Tropical Storm Idalia is expected to transform into a Category 3 hurricane on Monday (Aug 29) as it fast approaches Florida gulf coast.

The storm is currently about 90 miles off the western tip of Cuba, and is expected to make landfall on Wednesday (Aug 30) morning near the Big Bend of Florida, the National Hurricane Center said.

“Idalia has been moving erratically and is nearly stationary,” the hurricane centre said.

“A motion toward the north-northeast and north is expected to begin later today, bringing the centre of Idalia over the extreme southeastern Gulf of Mexico by tonight,” it added.

State of emergency declared in Florida

On Sunday night, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 33 counties as the Florida Division of Emergency Management mobilised response personnel to deal with the storm.

“These things can wobble, so Floridians along our Gulf Coast should be vigilant even if you’re currently outside the [forecast zone] cone,” DeSantis said from the Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee, according to CNN.

He said that around 1,100 National Guard members had been dispatched and command centres have been set up to deal with power outages and other damages.

President Joe Biden spoke with DeSantis on Monday (Aug 28) and approved an emergency declaration for the US state as Tropical Storm Idalia approaches, the White House said.

Tropical Storm Idalia to strengthen into hurricane and make landfall in Florida, say US forecasters

A white man driven by racial hatred shot dead three Black people in a Florida discount store Saturday before taking his own life after a standoff with police, authorities said.

Florida gunman targeted black people, killed 3 in a case of racial hatred

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has suspended his campaign trail for the party presidential nomination after three Black people were killed in a Jacksonville shooting, while a tropical storm intensified in the Gulf of Mexico, a CNN report has claimed.

Although DeSantis' campaign did not provide an update on his future political travel, he told reporters on Sunday (August 27) that he was "locked in" on the storm and that "we're gonna get the job done". He reportedly cancelled a town hall scheduled on Monday (August 28) in South Carolina, as well as his keynote address at South Carolina Rep. A pilot operating a scheduled LATAM Airlines flight from Miami to Santiago in Chile died after falling sick in the plane, three hours after takeoff. The aircraft subsequently diverted to Panama City, where Captain Ivan Andaur, 56, was pronounced dead upon arrival. US: 9-year-old child fatally shoots 6-year-old in Florida, police say

The United States Republican lawmaker from the state of Florida, Greg Steube announced that he has filed articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden on Friday (August 11) for “high crimes and misdemeanors.” Republican lawmakers’ new bid to impeach the incumbent comes as House Republicans continue to investigate Biden and the business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden.

New impeachment articles filed against US president

In a statement, Steube’s office said he filed the articles against the president “for high crimes and misdemeanors.” The four articles filed feature accusations of abuse of power, bribery, extortion and honest services fraud; obstruction of justice; fraud; and financial involvement in drug and prostitution activities.

The allegations stemmed from claims of illegal business dealings and tax crimes. “It’s long past time to impeach Joe Biden,” said the Florida Republican lawmaker’s office. He added, “He has undermined the integrity of his office, brought disrepute on the Presidency, betrayed his trust as President, and acted in a manner subversive of the rule of law and justice at the expense of America’s citizens.”

Earlier this year, Steube announced his backing for former US President Donald Trump for his 2024 White House bid and said he is the only one who can fix the “disastrous policies of the Biden administration,” as quoted by The Hill.

During an interview with Newsmax, on Thursday, he also referred to various investigations that House Republicans have conducted since gaining the majority and also spoke about Hunter Biden’s former business partner Devon Archer’s recent testimony.

Mega Millions ticket sold in Florida wins $1.58 billion, the third-largest lottery prize in US history

United States 2024 presidential hopeful and rightwing Florida governor Ron DeSantis faced wide condemnation after he stated that if he gets elected to the White House, he will “start slitting throats” in the country's federal bureaucracy from the first day he comes in power.

National Treasury Employees Union president Tony Reardon called the comments of hardline Republicans “repulsive and unworthy of the presidential campaign trail”.

As reported by The Guardian, American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) President Everett Kelley said, “Governor DeSantis’ threat to ‘start slitting throats’ of federal employees is dangerous, disgusting, disgraceful and disqualifying.”

Among other commentators, columnist Max Boot said that the words of DeSantis were “deranged” while founder of the Bulwark, a conservative site, Bill Kristol said that the governor was “making a bold play to dominate the maniacal psychopath lane in the Republican primary”.

DeSantis has been clearly in second place in the Republican primary but is lagging behind Donald Trump by more than 30 points in most averages, notwithstanding proliferating legal jeopardy of the former president, which includes 78 criminal charges.

The comment about slitting throats was made by DeSantis at an event in the second state to vote New Hampshire, as reported by The Guardian.

“On bureaucracy, you know, we’re going to have all these deep state people, you know, we’re going to start slitting throats on day one and be ready to go,” DeSantis stated. “You’re going to see a huge, huge outcry because Washington wants to protect its own,” he added.

DeSantis uses line ‘slitting throats’ often

The line “slitting throats” has been used by DeSantis even before. Last week, he had said to rightwing columnist John Solomon that he wished to appoint a defence secretary who can “slit some throats” and be “very firm, very strong”.

Condemning remarks of DeSantis, Kelley said, “Federal employees – over a third of whom are veterans now wearing their second uniform in service to their country – have dedicated their lives to serving their fellow Americans.”

“They support our military, provide healthcare to our nation’s veterans, enforce our laws, safeguard our communities, deliver benefits to America’s most vulnerable citizens, keep our skies safe for air travel, protect human health and our environment, and much more,” he added.

“These public servants deserve respect and commendation from our nation’s leaders. No federal employee should face death threats from anyone, least of all from someone seeking to lead the US government. Governor DeSantis must retract his irresponsible statement,” he stated.

United States 2024 presidential hopeful and rightwing Florida governor Ron DeSantis faced wide condemnation after he stated that if he gets elected to the White House, he will “start slitting throats” in the country's federal bureaucracy from the first day he comes in power.

As reported by The Guardian, American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) President Everett Kelley said, “Governor DeSantis’ threat to ‘start slitting throats’ of federal employees is dangerous, disgusting, disgraceful and disqualifying.” Among other commentators, columnist Max Boot said that the words of DeSantis were “deranged” while founder of the Bulwark, a conservative site, Bill Kristol said that the governor was “making a bold play to dominate the maniacal psychopath lane in the Republican primary”. ALSO READ | Trump widens lead over DeSantis with record 54% support even as legal challenges mount DeSantis has been clearly in second place in the Republican primary but is lagging behind Donald Trump by more than 30 points in most averages, notwithstanding proliferating legal jeopardy of the former president, which includes 78 criminal charges. DeSantis uses line ‘slitting throats’ often The line “slitting throats” has been used by DeSantis even before. Last week, he had said to rightwing columnist John Solomon that he wished to appoint a defence secretary who can “slit some throats” and be “very firm, very strong”. Condemning remarks of DeSantis, Kelley said, “Federal employees – over a third of whom are veterans now wearing their second uniform in service to their country – have dedicated their lives to serving their fellow Americans.” WATCH | ‘Peaky Blinders’ team condemns Ron DeSantis campaign's ‘homophobic’ post “They support our military, provide healthcare to our nation’s veterans, enforce our laws, safeguard our communities, deliver benefits to America’s most vulnerable citizens, keep our skies safe for air travel, protect human health and our environment, and much more,” he added. “These public servants deserve respect and commendation from our nation’s leaders. No federal employee should face death threats from anyone, least of all from someone seeking to lead the US government. Governor DeSantis must retract his irresponsible statement,” he stated. Extreme heatwaves: Deadly summer of 2023 | WION Wideangle

The surface ocean temperature in and around Florida Keys in the US has risen to hot tub levels this week as global weather monitors continue to warn about the dangerous impact of warming waters on ecosystems.

A water temperature buoy in the Everglades National Park recorded a high of 101.19 degrees Fahrenheit (38.44 Celsius). The temperature was recorded in the waters of Manatee Bay. Other buoys nearby topped 100ºF (38ºC) and the upper 90s.

According to United States' National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), normal water temperatures for the area during this time of the year should be between 73ºF and 88ºF (23ºC and 31ºC). The NOAA published the findings from the National Data Buoy Centre.

These reading have been obtained close on the heels of previous warnings over heating up of Florida's waters. Prolonged heat has continued to bake other parts of the country.

Global, human-driven climate change is fuelling extremes in the weather. The growing frequency and intensity of severe weather is considered to be symptomatic of climate change.

United Nations' World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said earlier this month that temperatures in the global seas have reached monthly record highs since May. This is also driven in part by El Nino weather phenomenon.

The WMO and NOAA have both said that the temperatures like those recorded in South Florida can prove to be deadly for marine life. This in turn can threaten ocean ecosystems. The rising temperatures can also impact human food supplies and livelihoods of those who depend on the seas to earn their money.

As he worked his knife to filet fish hauled into Key Largo on Tuesday, fishing boat captain Dustin Hansel said the catch has been getting "slower and slower" for the past five summers. He's also been seeing more dead fish in waters around Key Largo.

"As far as all of our bay waters, any near-shore waters, everything is super, super hot," Hansel told Reuters.

Earlier this month, NOAA warned that warmer water around Florida can supercharge hurricanes and tropical storms. Such storms gain more energy over warmer waters. Rising temperatures are also severely stressing coral reefs, the agency said.

(With inputs from agencies) You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
A jury in South Florida, US on Friday (July 21) awarded $800,000 in damages to the family of a little girl after she suffered second-degree burns when a flaming-hot McDonald's Chicken McNugget fell on her thigh in 2019. Her family had sought $15 million in damages.

The decision to award the money comes a little more than two months after the jury found McDonald's and its franchise holder, Upchurch, liable for the ordeal suffered by the girl.

The family was awarded $400,000 for the suffering and mental anguish suffered in the past four years as well as $400,000 for the future, according to BBC.

The 2019 incident

The incident took place in August 2019 when Holmes took her son and daughter to a Tamarac McDonald’s and bought the Happy Meals. However, she was given no warning that the food might be scalding. After receiving the food from the drive-thru window, she passed it along to her daughter and son in the back seat and drove away.

Her daughter, Olivia, an autistic child who was four years old at the time, did not testify during the trial. However, according to Holmes' version, she did not realise at first why her daughter was screaming in the back.

Upon pulling up into a nearby parking lot to help the child, she noticed the burn and took photos on her iPhone, which included audio clips of the child’s screams.

Both the photo and the audio were presented during the trial. The attorneys representing the fast-food giant, however, argued that food had to be hot to avoid salmonella poisoning. They added that nuggets were not meant to be pressed between a seat belt and human flesh for more than two minutes.

Though both sides agreed that the nugget was the cause of the burns, the family's lawyers argued that the temperature was above 93 Celsius while McDonald's said it was no more than 71 Celsius.
