A man in the US state of Florida has discovered a huge fossilised jawbone of a mammoth, believed to be at least 10,000 years old. John Kreatsoulas, a self-proclaimed fossil junkie made the discovery while diving in the alligator-infested waters of the Peace River, near the city of Arcadia.

Kreatsoulas, who runs Fossil Junkies Dig and Dive Charters, an organisation specialising in hosting fossil-hunting trips, made the discovery of the lifetime by innocuously stumbling upon the item, which he initially thought was a log. However, upon closer inspection, he realised it was a mandible.

"I grabbed onto it just to hold on for a second, and I realised, 'wait for a second, that's not a tree, that was a mammoth jaw,'" Kreatsoulas was quoted as saying by NBC2.

Moreover, it was tenacity that led to the discovery as a day earlier, one of Kreatsoulas' friends had to pull him out of the river after spotting an alligator nearby.

An "abrupt and unexpected loss of heart function leading to loss of consciousness and collapse" is what causes a sudden cardiac arrest, a potentially fatal emergency. If not treated within minutes, it is deadly.

According to healthychildren.org, sudden cardiac arrests are rare in young people, but they can still happen. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 2,000 young, seemingly healthy people under age 25 in the United States die each year of sudden cardiac arrest.

As per a paper published in the National Library of Medicine, "About 25 per cent of cases of sudden cardiac death occur during sports. Young people with sudden cardiac death (SCD) have underlying heart disease, with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and coronary artery anomalies being the most common in most series."

Regular wellness visits to the doctor can help identify risk factors that may contribute to sudden cardiac arrest. Early CPR and widespread availability of AEDs could prevent about 25 per cent of sudden deaths in young people, especially teenagers.

Young people with sudden cardiac death (SCD) have underlying heart disease, with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and coronary artery anomalies being the most common in most series." Regular wellness visits to the doctor can help identify risk factors that may contribute to sudden cardiac arrest. Early CPR and widespread availability of AEDs could prevent about 25 per cent of sudden deaths in young people, especially teenagers. (With inputs from agencies)

During an infrastructure project in Florida's northeastern city of St. Augustine, construction crews made a remarkable find: the remnants of a shipwreck dating back to the 19th century.

Last week, the construction crew from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) were working on a $42 million drainage improvement initiative in the downtown area, when they uncovered the historic wooden fragments, reported TV station WFLA.

The find

Described as a single-masted, shallow-draft sailboat used for coastal fishing, the recovered ship's lower hull measured between 24 and 28 feet originally. The excavation team has recovered 19 feet of the intact remains.

Alongside the vessel, various artifacts were found. According to the Guardian report citing Jacksonville Today, these include the base of a kerosene lamp, two coconut shells likely repurposed as drinking cups, leather shoes presumed to belong to a crew member, and 19th-century coins.

Bomb scare turns diaper drama: Panama to Florida flight gets caught in weird situation

A Florida father and his three sons are set to spend time behind bars after being convicted on fraud charges related to their audacious scheme of selling bleach as a COVID-19 cure from a fake church. Mark Grenon, aged 66, and his son Joseph Grenon, aged 36, initially fled to Colombia when federal charges were first announced against them. However, they were eventually extradited back to the United States and sentenced to the maximum term of five years behind bars. This sentence was agreed upon between the US and Colombia.

Meanwhile, Mark Grenon's other two sons, Jonathan Grenon, aged 37, and Jordan Grenon, aged 29, received more severe penalties, each being sentenced to 12.5 years in prison. Their charges included defrauding the United States by "distributing an unapproved and misbranded drug," as per New York Post.

Three-year-old, two adults shot dead in Florida over apparent sale of dog

In a startling incident, a massive 13-foot alligator in Florida drew attention after it was allegedly seen carrying what appeared to be human remains. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office swiftly responded to reports of a body in a waterway near 134th Avenue North and 121st Street in Ridgecrest, Florida. Collaborating with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, authorities took the necessary steps to "humanely kill" the enormous alligator. Media reports said that there was blood near the alligator.

What did the eyewitness say?

JaMarcus Bullard, an eyewitness, reportedly recounted to Spectrum Bay News 9 about his shocking observation, stating, "I could tell there was a body in his mouth, so I started recording." Bullard promptly reported the incident to the fire department.

"I threw a rock at the gator just to see if it was really a gator and like it pulled the body, like it was holding on to the lower part of the torso, and pulled it under the water," Bullard said. The discovery has left some locals unsettled. A local, Jennifer Dean, told a media outlet that her children frequently walk by the canal.

US: Florida's Broward County announces November as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’

US Republican Governor from the state of Florida, Ron DeSantis, on Thursday (September 7) got into a heated argument with an audience member during a press conference, who blamed him for the racially motivated mass shooting that left three Black people dead in Jacksonville, last month.

What happened?

According to reports, the exchange which lasted not more than three minutes, started out cordial with both DeSantis and the unidentified man thanking each other for their military service. However, the unidentified man went on to accuse DeSantis of enacting policies “that hurt people like myself and the people that I love,” including his children.

The person also said that the policies the Florida governor backs have led to weapons going to “hateful people.” Subsequently, a visibly angry DeSantis said, “You don’t get to come here and blame me for some madman.” He added, “That is not appropriate and I’m not going to accept it.”

In another shocking development, electric vehicles burst into flames in Florida after coming in contact with saltwater swirled up by Hurricane Idalia. The firefighters in Palm Harbor, Florida, citing the incidents that involved Teslas took to social media and warned hybrid car owners that their vehicles could combust if exposed to saltwater.

"If you own a hybrid or electric vehicle that has come into contact with saltwater due to recent flooding within the last 24 hours, it is crucial to relocate the vehicle from your garage without delay," the department said in a Facebook post. "Saltwater exposure can trigger combustion in lithium-ion batteries. If possible, transfer your vehicle to higher ground."

The warning was also issued for the owners of electric golf carts, scooters and bicycles, with lithium-ion batteries as these vehicles are also at a potential risk of catching fire when they get wet.

Saltwater poses a threat to such vehicles even when the water dries out as the salt residue can create "bridges" between the battery's cells, which can further create electrical connections that can ignite a fire.

Hurricane Idalia: Electric vehicles catch fire in Florida after being exposed to saltwater

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will not be meeting President Joe Biden when he visits the state on Saturday (September 2) to inspect the regions most impacted by Hurricane Idalia.

“We don’t have any plans for the governor to meet with the president tomorrow," DeSantis’ press secretary, Jeremy Redfern said.

“In these rural communities, and so soon after impact, the security preparations alone that would go into setting up such a meeting would shut down ongoing recovery efforts,” he added.

Earlier, during a briefing in Tallahassee, DeSantis said he told Biden on a phone call that the president's visit could be disruptive.

“One thing I did mention to him on the phone is where these communities are the hardest-hit communities - it would be very disruptive to have the whole security apparatus that goes because there are only so many ways to get into these places,” said DeSantis.

While DeSantis and his office refuse the meeting between the two leaders, White House Homeland Security Adviser Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall said she expected a Biden-DeSantis meeting.

“We’re just planning the visit, but I will say that every time I’ve been to Florida with the president, he has met, of course, with Gov. DeSantis and traveled the disaster zone, whether it’s from last year’s hurricane or when the Surfside condominium building collapsed,” Sherwood-Randall said.

Biden to visit Idalia-hit Florida as people survey hurricane damage

Idalia turns deadly wreaks havoc from Florida to the Carolinas. Fierce storm surge engulfed homes and caused destruction along Florida’s gulf coast.

Idalia: Florida assesses storm damage amid sense of relief

Hurricane Idalia, after turning powerful and dangerous in Florida on Wednesday (August 30) causing a potentially catastrophic storm surge to coastal communities and disrupting power supply for thousands, moved to neighbouring Georgia. It is now moving towards South Carolina.

However, Idalia has now weakened to a tropical storm that has led to the region receiving rainfall of up to 10 inches (25 centimetres) and causing life-threatening inundations from rising water which is entering islands, said officials.

The officials called Idalia and its dangerously high-surging waters 'a once-in-a-lifetime event' for the area around northwest Florida. No deaths were reported in Florida due to the hurricane and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis emphasised "that very well may change," given the storm's magnitude.

State officials stated that the first responders, which includes search and rescue teams, have been operational. However, the officials said that it may take more time to enter the remote areas which has been blocked by high water or fallen trees.

Idalia weakens to a Category 1 hurricane

Even though Idalia weakened to a Category 1 hurricane and slowly became a tropical storm which had winds at a speed of 70 miles per hour as it travelled towards Georgia, the residents were warned by the authorities of the aftermath and the dangers of high tide.

The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said that the water levels were more than six feet above normal in Cedar Key, as a number of Florida islands jutted into the Gulf of Mexico, and said that the coastal waters were increasing rapidly.

Threat not over: Biden

Few Floridians also suggested that they had dodged a bullet as the projected ferocity of Idalia diminished. "We were really spared and blessed," said Sheriff Robert McCallum of Levy County, just south of the landfall zone, in a press briefing, adding that the storm surge was "not near what we had expected."

US: 100-year-old oak tree falls on Florida governor's mansion as Hurricane Idalia strikes

On August 30, Hurricane Idalia barreled into Florida at the rate of a speeding train, slicing trees in half, ripping off hotel roofs, and turning little cars into boats. After that, the hurricane swept into Georgia as a still-potent storm that flooded roads and forced locals to seek higher ground.

'Don't mess with this storm': Idalia makes landfall as Category 3 hurricane in Florida with 125 mph winds

A rapidly intensifying Hurricane Idalia crawled towards Florida's west coast on Wednesday (August 30), leading to flood alerts and mass evacuation orders as authorities issued a warning of the storm strengthening to "extremely dangerous" levels before landfall.

The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) stated that Hurricane Idalia, which is a Category 2 storm with winds travelling at a speed of 105 mph, was moving towards the southwest shore of Florida, and leading to flooding in Havana and tropical storm conditions to western Cuba.

The Gulf of Mexico's warm waters are likely to turbocharge Idalia into an "extremely dangerous major hurricane before landfall on Wednesday," said the NHC, while warning of "storm surge inundation of 10 to 15 feet (3-5 meters)" in coastal areas.

NHC further stated that parts of the state’s Gulf Coast will be hit by the “life-threatening” storm.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appeals 'leave now'

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that the people present in the evacuation areas along the Gulf Coast must leave "now."

“I want to tell everybody in Florida – listen to your local officials. If they asked you to evacuate, please do so, and it doesn’t mean you have to go hundreds of miles. It could just be 10 or 20 miles inland to get out of that main area,” he said in a press conference, appealing to the coastal residents still present in the 23 counties where evacuation orders have been issued to go to hotels or seek shelters in places which are out of the danger zones.

Idalia is likely to make landfall towards the north of the coast, in the Big Bend area, which is big marshy land unlike Florida's other coastal areas and does not have barrier islands.

"We've not really had a hurricane strike this area for a long, long time," DeSantis said while speaking to reporters. "You are going to see a lot of debris -- there's a lot of trees along that track," the governor added, after suspending his presidential campaign to manage the crisis.

In its latest advisory, the NHC said that the forecasts were increasingly confident that Hurricane Idalia is likely to "reach the coast of Florida adjacent to Apalachee Bay Wednesday morning."

On Monday, DeSantis spoke with US President Joe Biden after which the latter approved an emergency declaration for the state, hence unblocking resources and federal funds. Meanwhile, staff has been deployed by the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Ahead of the arrival of Idalia, Tampa International Airport has been closed while flights have been disrupted along the US East Coast because of another hurricane Franklin which is churning in the Atlantic.
