Top 10 world news: Two killed in Florida mall shooting; Pak action after suicide bombing, and more

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is looking into an incident when a two-pound object crashed into a Florida man's house last month. The space agency is analysing whether or not the object came from the International Space Station (ISS). In case it came from ISS, it would be a rare incident of an object falling out of orbit and damaging someone's property, or having the potential to harm a person.&nbsp;

As per local reports, the homeowner said that the object crashed through the roof of his Naples home at 2:34 pm (local time) on March 8. Its sound was recorded by his Ring security camera.&nbsp;

The homeowner, identified as Alejandro Otero, told WINK News, "It was a tremendous sound. It almost hit my son. He was two rooms over and heard it all. Something ripped through the house and then made a big hole on the floor and on the ceiling."&nbsp;

In his social media post earlier, Otero addressed a post stating, "Can you please assist with getting NASA to connect with me? I've left messages and emails without a response."&nbsp;

A report by the European Space Agency (ESA) estimated that the annual risk of an individual human being injured by space debris is less than 1 in 100 billion. It means it is 1.5 million times lower than the risk of being killed in an accident at home, around 65,000 times lower than the risk of being struck by lightning, and three times lower than the risk of being struck by a meteorite.

Falling space debris has never killed anyone, but the incident that happened with Otero could have caused casualties, as the man said that it almost hit his son.&nbsp;

According to the scientific journal Ars Technica, the object was probably from ISS. The journal said that the US space command recorded the re-entry of a piece of space debris over the Gulf of Mexico on a path towards southwest Florida at 2.29 pm (local time) that day. The timing was just five minutes before Otero's Nest home security camera captured the sound of the crash.&nbsp;

"It used to have a cylindrical shape, and you can tell by the shape of the top that it travelled in this direction through the atmosphere," Otero said.

Josh Finch, who is a NASA spokesperson, told Ars Technica that the analysis will take&nbsp;place "as soon as possible to determine its origin".&nbsp;

The top court of Florida upheld the state's 15-week abortion ban which paved the way for the implementation of the six-week ban and it was also decided that a&nbsp;ballot initiative would be held to decide if&nbsp;abortion rights should be enshrined&nbsp; in the state's Constitution.&nbsp;

The six-week abortion ban was passed in 2023 but was kept on hold the judgement on the case of the 15-week ban. The six-week ban will come into effect in 30 days.

<h2>Court gives two rulings on abortion ban</h2>

Florida's Republican-appointed justices on Monday (April 1) agreed by 6-1 that the constitution of the state - especially its privacy protections - did not apply to access to abortion.

The court's ruling upheld the existing 15-week abortion ban which was passed in Florida in 2022.

Florida's Republican Governor Ron DeSantis had almost a year ago signed into law a six-week abortion ban. However, it was decided that the bill would be placed on hold till the legal challenges of the 15-week ban were cleared.

After Monday's ruling, Florida can place into effect the six-week ban within 30 days. Lawsuits challenging the ban have been filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood, which has its own clinics that provide abortions.

The Florida Supreme Court, in a separate ruling on Monday (April 1), also decided by 4-3 that a proposed constitutional amendment which will protect access to abortion in the state can be part of the ballots in November when the country's general election is held.

In the ballot question, the Floridians will have to vote 'yes' or 'no' to a statement that reads, "No law shall prohibit, penalize, delay or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient's health."&nbsp;

Viability refers to the time when an unborn child or foetus is likely to survive outside the uterus, which is generally around 24 weeks.

It added that "this amendment does not change the Legislature's constitutional authority to require notification to a parent or guardian before a minor has an abortion".

Astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson, earlier this March posted a picture of a U.S. map that shows Florida and America's East and Gulf Coasts underwater on X, formerly known as Twitter. The post was captioned, "In Florida, at 345 feet, Britton Hill is the highest elevation — the lowest highest elevation in the United States. This makes Florida supremely susceptible to sea-level rise during Climate Change. An objective truth even if you don’t believe in Climate Change. Just Sayin'." Is Florida really drowning? The map is from National Geographic's September 2013 issue, which depicted what the map of different continents would look like if the sea level rose by 216 feet once all of the world's ice melted. Though scientists believe that this scenario is not imminent and it would take over 5000 years for it to become real. However, a faction believes that if we continue emitting greenhouse gases and increasing our carbon footprints it will become Earth's reality far sooner. In Florida, at 345-feet, Britton Hill is the highest elevation — the lowest highest elevation in United States. This makes Florida supremely susceptible to sea-level rise during Climate Change. An objective truth even if you don’t believe in Climate Change. Just Sayin'. pic.twitter.com/bSf34O8pQc — Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) March 10, 2024 × Florida is not the only area witnessing the affected, but parts of South America would drown in the sea, and Denmark and the Netherlands would be a small set of islands. David Thornalley, a professor of ocean and climate science at University College London, stated that while this scenario is quite extraordinary, it is possible. "In the long term, even under more moderate emission scenarios, sea level rise after a few hundred years is expected to be in excess of 10 meters [33 feet]. So the picture Neil shows is not that far-fetched, it is simply that this scale of sea-level rise will take centuries to millennia to occur, assuming we don't lower GHG levels," he said. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), by 2100 the sea level will rise a few centimeters but the possibility of it rising 2 meters is still there. Projections by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say that even a 3-foot rise in sea level will inundate Florida's coastline and New Orleans would drown in the sea. How will the sea level rise by 213 feet? Different ice sheets have differing levels of vulnerability to melting. The Antarctic ice sheet has the potential to raise sea levels by more than 190 feet and is vulnerable to runaway processes that can result in rapid collapse of the ice sheet over centuries, causing a sea-level rise of several meters. Similarly, Greenland's ice sheet could melt and raise sea levels by up to 23 feet.

A part of Florida could drown by 2100 because of sea level rise, map shows

A dog, while digging in the backyard of her owner to find a bone, ended up discovering something rather unexpected.

Homeowner Mathew Sims said that his pup, named Baby, was playing in the backyard of the house in Jacksonville, Florida when the rusted object was dug up by her near the fence line, said the police.&nbsp;

Speaking to FOX 30, Sims said, "You couldn’t tell what it was until you started pulling it up. Once I got it halfway out, I was like oh, I know what this is, let me gently put this back down."

The metallic item discovered was actually an unexploded military bomb, which was decades old.

Meanwhile, his neighbour Carla Smith said that she was not worried about the strange discovery. Watch: Florida police officer at the right time, right place "We just watched. I wasn’t scared because I’ve been around people who have found artefacts in the land," she said while speaking to the news outlet. "To me, it was interesting to watch. They did their thing and they were out of here in minutes," she added. The antique bomb was found by the dog two months after a man found a rusty rocket in Bellevue, Washington state. It was said to have been an old Cold War nuclear missile. Meanwhile, an unexploded hand grenade was discovered by a nine-year-old boy in his garden in Yarcombe, East Devon, England. The grenade was removed by the police and detonated in a close field. (With inputs from agencies)

In the US state of Florida, children under the age of 14 will now be banned from using social media platforms. On Monday (Mar 25), the state's governor, Ron DeSantis signed a bill that will also require 14- and 15-year-olds to get parental consent to use social media.

<h2>Termination of accounts</h2>

As per reports, the measure, which is supposed to protect children from online risks to their mental health, will require social media platforms to shut down accounts of those under 14 and those under 16 who do not have parental consent.&nbsp;

The bill which will&nbsp;become law on January 1, 2025, also requires the platforms to use a third-party verification system to screen out underage users.

In a statement, DeSantis said, "Social media harms children in a variety of ways," and that his legislation "gives parents a greater ability to protect their children."

While it doesn't name any platforms, the bill targets social media platforms with features such as "infinite scrolling," reaction metrics like likes, autoplay videos, live-streaming, and push notifications. It exempts platforms primarily focused on email, messaging, or texting between specific senders and recipients.

<h2>Parents' rights, criticism of bill, and more</h2>

Previously, in February, the state's Republican-led legislature passed a bill that sought to ban children under 16 from using social media entirely. However, it was vetoed by DeSantis earlier this month, who said that the bill would've limited parents' rights.

The recently introduced amendment allows parents to provide consent for older children to use social media platforms.

Supporters of the bill say that it will stem the harmful effects of social media. However, critics say that it violates the US Constitution's First Amendment protections for free speech. They also state that parents and not the government should make a decision about whether children of all ages should use social media.

Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, also opposed the legislation and said it would limit parental discretion and raise data privacy concerns because of the personal information users would have to provide to be age-verified.

To everyone’s surprise and scare, wildlife conservators recently found 500 pounds of pythons all coiled up together in a Florida forest. The pythons were found last month in Collier County and the pile was one of the biggest to have been found in a single day to date.

The pythons were found in three different breeding aggregations or “mating balls”. All the 11 pythons weighing 500 pounds are Burmese pythons. The mating balls of pythons found on February 21 had one female snake with multiple male snakes, as per the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.&nbsp;

<h2>500 pounds of Burmese pythons found in Florida&nbsp;</h2>

Burmese pythons, as suggested by the name, are native to Southeast Asia and are considered an invasive species in the US. They generally prey on over 72 species of animals in Florida, as per conservancy wildlife biologist Ian Bartoszek.&nbsp;

Burmese pythons are also one of the largest species of snakes in the world.&nbsp;

The species was brought to Florida back in the 1970s through pet trade and ever since became an “established apex predator across the Greater Everglades ecosystem,” according to the conservancy’s website.&nbsp;

"Burmese pythons are thought to be responsible for a 90% decline in native mammal populations across their established range," the conservancy says.

To deal with deteriorating wildlife conditions in Florida, the conservancy has been working on removing these pythons from the area.&nbsp;

In order to capture them in large quantities, the conservancy uses male snakes that it tags with radio transmitters to lead it to female snakes during the breeding season, Bartoszek said.

Once the conservancy captures the snakes in an effort to suppress the local python population, they are euthanised, and their tissue samples are collected to advance genetic studies.

The Feb 21 toll of 500 pounds has been the largest since the Conservancy started its project to suppress the local python population. Since its launch, the conservancy has removed more than 1,300 pythons weighing over 35,000 pounds from an area of about 150 square miles in southwestern Florida, Bartoszek said.

A lawsuit settlement regarding Florida's contentious "don't say gay" statute, announced Monday, marks&nbsp;a significant shift in policy. The settlement, as per reports, affirms the rights of teachers and students to discuss LGBTQ+ issues and access related library materials openly.&nbsp;

This settlement, which is widely being celebrated by rights groups,&nbsp;comes as a win for LGBTQ+ individuals and families who previously had been silenced by the controversial legislation introduced by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis.

<h2>A 'giant step' forward</h2>

Nadine Smith, Executive Director of Equality&nbsp;Florida, hailed the settlement as a "giant step" towards rectifying the harm inflicted by the law on families, schools, and the state.&nbsp;

"Florida has already endured nearly two years of book banning, educators leaving the profession, and safe space stickers being ripped off of classroom windows in the wake of this law cynically targeting the LGBTQ+ community," said Smith.

"This settlement is a giant step toward repairing the immense damage these laws and the dangerous political rhetoric has inflicted on our families, our schools, and our state."

<h2>What happens to the 'don't say gay' statute?</h2>

As per the terms of the settlement, the statute itself remains intact. However, now, because of the settlement, the state must clarify that the statute only restricts classroom instruction on specific subjects — sexual orientation and gender identity — but doesn't prohibit their mere discussion or access to related library books.

Under the terms of the settlement, the Florida Board of Education has been mandated to send instructions outlining these requirements to all 67 school districts across Florida.

Governor DeSantis's administration has described the settlement as a "major win", reports WP. This is because the prohibition of sexual ideology instruction in classrooms has been retained.

However, critics have long argued that the law instilled fear and censorship regarding LGBTQ+ topics in schools. This law, when introduced, led to far-reaching consequences, such as the removal of rainbow flags and the cancellation of student groups advocating for LGBTQ+ rights.

The settlement addresses concerns over the vague language of the law, which led to its misinterpretation by many school districts, resulting in the suppression of LGBTQ+ representation and discourse.

The releasing of balloons into the skies of Florida, United States is likely to be banned if the state's littering laws are tightened successfully.&nbsp;

If the legislation passes, those found intentionally releasing a balloon into the sky in Florida will be fined.

This is part of an effort being made towards changing laws in at least eight states of the United States with the aim to protect turtles, dolphins, birds and other wildlife from the danger of either being eaten up or getting entangled in fallen balloons.

The change has passed through the legislature of the state and has reached the desk of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. &nbsp;If DeSantis signs the legislation, it will go into effect on July 1.

Sea turtles are especially vulnerable to such conditions are they reach the surface to breathe and eat and sometimes eat balloons thinking they are jellyfish, as per the US&nbsp;Fish and Wildlife Service.

The strings which are attached to the balloons also face the chance of getting tangled around birds which either asphyxiates them or ties them to a single spot till they die of hunger.

Few of those balloons are marketed as biodegradable, however, they still take years to break down which puts animals' lives at risk, as per the University of Michigan.

Metallic mylar balloons also float onto power lines which cause thousands of power outages every year.

NASA's Terra satellite recently captured a strange image of the sky above the Gulf of Mexico and just off the coast of Florida, which revealed some odd, eerie holes in the clouds.&nbsp;

This is not the first time that such holes have been spotted. In fact, for more than 60 years, these holes have been puzzling the scientists, some even linking it to paranormal phenomena. However, now scientists have decoded the mystery behind these clouds.

In the photo, which was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) using NASA's Terra satellite last month, a cluster of ellipse-shaped figures or circles appeared which looked like they had been neatly cut out from the clouds. As per NASA, they even depicted "feathery wisps" in the middle of the hole.

<h2>What are these holes and what causes them?</h2>

These holes are called cavum clouds, hole-punch clouds or fallstreak holes. Such holes are caused by aeroplanes which travel through banks of altocumulus clouds, as per NASA, which cited a study published by University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) scientists in 2010 and 2011.

NASA claimed these mid-level clouds are filled with liquid water droplets which are "supercooled." &nbsp;Because of this, the droplets remain in a liquid state even when temperatures fall to the typical freezing point of water.

NASA's Terra satellite recently captured a strange image of the sky above the Gulf of Mexico and just off the coast of Florida, which revealed some odd, eerie holes in the clouds. Also Read: Scientists find oldest fiery-red supermassive black hole from universe’s infancy What are these holes and what causes them? These holes are called cavum clouds, hole-punch clouds or fallstreak holes. Such holes are caused by aeroplanes which travel through banks of altocumulus clouds, as per NASA, which cited a study published by University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) scientists in 2010 and 2011. NASA claimed these mid-level clouds are filled with liquid water droplets which are "supercooled." Because of this, the droplets remain in a liquid state even when temperatures fall to the typical freezing point of water. "Supercooling happens when water droplets are exceptionally pure and lack small particles, such as dust, fungal spores, pollen, or bacteria, around which ice crystals typically form," said NASA. In Florida, Republican legislators have halted a controversial bill that aims to grant new protections to "unborn children," amid fears it could negatively affect women's reproductive rights.

Opponents of the bill have raised concerns over its potential impact on in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatments, even as the bill&nbsp;easily passed through several committees.

Supporters, as per The Washington Post, argue that the bill was necessary to align civil law with existing state criminal law, which already imposes additional penalties for harming pregnant women. However, opponents warned that the bill was an effort to establish "foetal personhood",&nbsp;putting abortion providers and those assisting women in obtaining abortions at risk of lawsuits.

State Senator Erin Grall, the bill's sponsor, acknowledged the need for further work on the policy, stating, "Although I have worked diligently to respond to questions and concerns, I understand there is still work that needs to be done."

"It is important we get the policy right with an issue of this significance," added Grall.

A Senate Rules Committee hearing for a companion bill was removed from the calendar, with no further meetings scheduled before the session ends on March 8, making it unlikely for the bill to advance.

Representative Jenna Persons-Mulicka, who sponsored the bill in the House, emphasised its focus on the "value of the life of an unborn child," stating it was not intended to address protections for IVF and embryos.

However, opponents, like Democratic Representative Dotie Joseph, have raised concerns about the bill's language.

Florida halts 'foetal personhood' bill amid concerns over reproduction rights

Florida lawmakers on Thursday (Feb 22) took a step towards enactment of one of the toughest bans on the use of social media by children in the history of the United States, and the bill – which talks about now allowing kids below the age of 16 on such platforms – has now been sent to the governor.

The controversial law aims at protecting the mental health of children against the "addictive features" of such platforms, in the wake of online dangers like cyberbullying, facing sexual predators, and teen suicide.

The Senate cleared the legislation by 23-14 and the bill then returned to the House where it was passed by a stunning majority of 108-7.

The bill has now reached the governor's table, where for making it a law, the bill needs to be signed by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis.

DeSantis has expressed scepticism regarding the legislation. Other states have made similar efforts which have been blocked by courts.

"We're talking about businesses that are using addictive features to engage in mass manipulation of our children to cause them harm," said the bill's sponsor Republican Erin Grall, while speaking to the Florida Senate on Thursday (Feb 22).

However, DeSantis, who has earlier expressed his sympathies towards the fears of people regarding the impact that social media has on children, expressed concerns regarding parental rights.

"A parent has the right to opt in," he said, in a press conference Thursday (Feb 22). The governor, who earlier ran for president and dropped out of the race in January, has several times said that parents should have more control over decisions which affect their children, especially in the field of education.

Under DeSantis, several laws have been passed by Florida to curtail teaching regarding gender identity and sex education in schools and to stop diversity programmes which were going on in state-funded universities.

The officials have also removed many books from school library shelves in the state in recent months, which were seen as inappropriate for children by school boards and conservative parents.

As per critics, such a law, which targets social media use, will violate the First Amendment of the US Constitution which guarantees freedom of speech.

Florida moves ahead with bill imposing social media ban on kids, governor's nod remains

In a rare incident, a man from&nbsp;Florida, United States,&nbsp;got 150 live bugs removed from his nose, which were bugging him for months.

The doctors in Jacksonville removed 150 live bugs, which were in the larva stage, and were infesting his nose, as reported by First Coast News. The man was a cancer survivor.&nbsp;

As per the report, the man has been feeling “off” since October, but it wasn’t till he suffered swelling on his face and lips on February 9 that he sought help at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital.

"I started getting nose bleeds, constant nose bleeds,” said the man, while speaking to First Coast News. “I couldn’t even get up to go to the bathroom without my nose starting to bleed," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Doctors told the man 'I see movement'&nbsp;</h2>

When the man went for the examination, the doctors said to him, "I see movement."&nbsp;

Speaking to the outlet, Dr David Carlson said he examined the nose of the man using a camera and discovered dozens of bugs feeding inside the nose as well as the sinus cavity and also shedding excrement and tissue which caused the inflammation.&nbsp;

"Size-wise, there’s variations, but the larger ones were as big as the end of my pinky,” said Carlson, speaking about the pests. “There were certain larvae inside the nose that were scurrying around and looking for places to feed and others that had burrowed into tissue," he added.&nbsp;

Carlson said that his team made attempts to remove the bugs using a suction, however, when that got clogged, a different instrument was used by them to remove the pest.&nbsp;

"They were right up against his skull base, right under the brain, had they gone through that it could have killed him,” Carlson said. The doctors sent the insects to an epidemiologist for identification.&nbsp;

The man hypothesised that the pests invaded his nose since he handled dead fish.

"I know that I have to change my lifestyle as far as I handle fish,” he said while speaking to First Coast News. “Before, I would rinse my hands in the river, now I’ll use cleaner to do a better job and not touch my nose or my hand," he added.&nbsp;

Carlson said that, in his entire career as an ears, nose and throat specialist, he has never seen such a case. The rare condition is known as nasal myiasis in which there is infestation of fly larvae.

In Clearwater, Florida, on Thursday night (Feb 1st), a small plane crashed into a mobile home in Bayside Estates, leaving a trail of devastation that claimed multiple lives and ignited a fierce fire that engulfed nearby homes.

<h2>What happened?</h2>

During a late-night press briefing, Clearwater Fire &amp; Rescue Chief Scott Ehlers confirmed the loss of several lives, both in the ill-fated aircraft and within the mobile home.

The precise toll of this tragedy is not known as of now. However, as per a CBS news report, emergency responders were working tirelessly.

"I can confirm we have several fatalities, both from the aircraft and within the mobile home," said Ehlers.

He explained that the aircraft collided with a solitary home, inflicting severe damage, but that the collateral impact of the ensuing fire extended to at least two additional homes.

"We're still working to make sure that there is no additional, and it's limited to what we do know right now."

The crash happened around 7:08 pm local time.

Chief Ehlers said, "The crews did a phenomenal job of getting the fire knocked down quickly."

The world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s 'Icon of the Seas', embarked on its maiden voyage, on Saturday (Jan 27) from the Port of Miami just before sunset. The nearly 1,200-foot-long and 250,800-tonne behemoth left the US state of Florida for its first seven-day island-hopping voyage through the tropics.&nbsp;

<h2>About the ship</h2>

Built over 900 days at a shipyard in Turku, Finland, the world’s largest cruise exceeds the Eiffel Tower in&nbsp;height and has the capacity for accommodating 8,000 passengers – 7,600 guests at full capacity, along with 2,350 crew – across 20 decks.&nbsp;

The cruise ship houses record-breaking features including, a 17,000-square-foot water park, currently the largest at sea; the first cantilevered infinity pool at sea; the largest swimming pool at sea, and the largest ice arena at sea.&nbsp;

The monster ship, registered in the Bahamas, also has more than 40 dining venues and bars and the largest orchestra at sea with 16 pieces and some 50 musicians to serenade guests. Additionally, the Icon of the Seas also includes six waterslides, seven swimming pools, an ice-skating rink, and a theatre.&nbsp;

“Icon of the Seas is the culmination of more than 50 years of dreaming, innovating and living our mission – to deliver the world's best vacation experiences responsibly,” said Royal Caribbean Group President and CEO Jason Liberty, earlier this week.&nbsp;

He added, “She is the ultimate multigenerational family vacation, forever changing the status quo in family travel and fulfilling vacation dreams for all ages on board.”&nbsp;

<h2>‘A step in the wrong direction’</h2>

The world’s largest cruise is full of iconic features to make a passenger’s trip at sea a memorable one, it has not been without criticism and concerns.&nbsp;

“It’s a step in the wrong direction,” said Bryan Comer, director of the Marine Program at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), an environmental policy think tank, according to Reuters.&nbsp;

The mammoth-sized ship has been touted as an eco-friendly one as it is built to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), which burns more cleanly than traditional marine fuel. However, it also poses greater risks for methane emissions.&nbsp;

Therefore, environmental groups have raised concerns about methane leakage from the ship’s engines and called it an unacceptable risk to the climate.&nbsp;

“We would estimate that using LNG as a marine fuel emits over 120% more life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions than marine gas oil,” said Comer.&nbsp;

Notably, methane, a planet-warming gas, is 80 times worse over 20 years than carbon dioxide and reducing such emissions is key to not cross to limiting global temperature warming.&nbsp;

Christian Nolen, a man from Florida, US, recently underwent brain surgery to remove a tumour from his head while fully awake, in fact, he also played guitar.&nbsp;

When one thinks about major surgeries, people mostly opt to be out cold with the anaesthesia procedure, in which medicines are used to prevent pain during surgery and other procedures.&nbsp;

But sometimes they have to be conscious of the procedure. In medical terms, it is known as awake craniotomy, which is a type of procedure performed on the brain while the patient is awake and able to talk to the operative team.&nbsp;

US-based media reports mentioned that the neurological team from the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine wanted Nolen to play notes on the instrument.&nbsp;

They wanted to monitor the progress of the surgery as it is difficult for the doctors to get feedback when the patient is asleep during surgery.&nbsp;

The team said that playing the guitar would help them to evaluate and protect his manual dexterity while being as aggressive as possible in removing the tumour.&nbsp;

While speaking to Fox News Digital about the experience, Ricardo Komotar, MD, director of the brain tumour programme at Sylvester, said: "Christian was having issues with the left side of his body, particularly his left hand."&nbsp;

A woman who has been in a Florida county jail since 2022 got pregnant, provoking an investigation. Her sister and attorney have demanded answers from corrections officials. On Christmas, Daisy Link, 28, called her family to inform them that she was almost four months pregnant, NBC News reported. Link's sister, Crystal Barreto, said, "I could not find words. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Right away, I was concerned about Daisy and her safety." Link, who is currently at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County on the charge of second-degree murder, has not gone to trial yet. She is also charged with battery by a detainee on a visitor or other detainee. Daisy Link's criminal defence attorney, Marlene Montaner, clarified that the second-degree murder was the result of a domestic violence incident. According to Montaner, Link fired a single gunshot while attempting to protect herself from an abusive partner. Her sister and her attorney have been pushing to get her discharged on house arrest, especially now that she is pregnant. However, both have no clue how she got pregnant in the first place. Barreto said her sister had not informed her of what happened. ALSO READ | Miracle! Woman in her 90s pulled out of debris five days after Japan 7.6 earthquake "My sister, when she was able to call us here and there, was trying to tell us pieces of the story, but is very scared to say anything over the phone because her calls are being recorded," Barreto said. "The allegations right now are that it's another inmate's," said Montaner. However, the county jail has separate floors for male and female inmates. Montaner also called the reports by other media outlets "implausible" as they suggested the pregnancy might have been the result of a male inmate passing semen through an air conditioning vent. She has raised questions about the corrections officials, blaming them for Link's pregnancy. According to a spokesperson from Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation, another inmate told the officials that she suspected Link was pregnant. The officials confirmed the pregnancy after a thorough medical examination, and the matter is currently under investigation. They also confirmed that the pregnancy was not the result of sexual assault. "While there is no evidence of sexual battery against our inmate at this time, the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy are currently under active investigation," the spokesperson said. Barreto said Link tried telling officials about her pregnancy earlier, but they mocked her for it. "Nobody should come out pregnant in jail. This is really ridiculous," Barreto said, expressing concerns about her sister's safety. (With inputs from agencies)
