Alligator in Florida ingests homeless woman, bodycam footage released by wildlife authorities

Storms flowing from the gulf of Mexico have swamped south Florida with flash floods. The floods have stalled traffic and forced the cancellation of dozens of flights.

Florida locals begin clean-up after floods, dozens of flights cancelled

Friday marked the end of nearly a week of intense rain in South Florida as a slow-moving weather system dumped over two feet (60 cm) of precipitation in the Everglades and at least one foot in other areas of Miami-Dade County, home to a large population.

On Friday (June 14), USA will take on Ireland in the Florida leg of Group A in the T20 World Cup 2024 edition. So far, Florida has hosted only one game in the ongoing 20-nation tournament, being held in West Indies and the USA. It was a washout encounter between Group D's Sri Lanka and Nepal, where not even the coin toss was possible. The weather forecast isn't encouraging for the remaining three games, however, if the USA-Ireland clash is washed out, it will confirm the team who will be enter the Super 8 along with India from Group A.

From Group A, India have secured a place in the next round with three successive wins whereas Canada are out (who may reach four points -- with a win over India -- but have a very poor Net Run-Rate). USA, with 3 points, are a strong contender to enter the next round. Even a washout against Ireland will secure them a spot in the Super 8.

If the match is abandoned due to rain, USA will end with 5 points from four games. Ireland will have 1 point with a game to go, versus Pakistan (also in Florida on Sunday). The winner of the Ireland-Pakistan clash will end with 3 and 4 points, respectively. Hence, USA will step into the next round even with a washout against the Irish camp on Friday.

Florida, over the years, has become synonymous with the weird antics of its residents. In the latest peculiar news stories from the US state: A priest has been accused of biting a woman.

Why did the priest bite the woman?

The priest, as per CNN, has been identified as Father Fidel Rodriguez. Reportedly, the priest while giving out Communion during a mass in St. Cloud city bit the woman while 'defending' the Communion bread.

Father Rodriguez, according to the police, initially refused to give the woman Communion bread on May 19. Instead, he told her, "she did not do the prior steps necessary" to receive the Communion.

He "advised her to receive the Sacrament of Penance (Confession) before coming back to receive Holy Communion (Eucharist)", said the Diocese of Orlando in a statement.

Law enforcement agencies located and captured a giant alligator in Florida on Thursday (May 16) that was found wandering on a route used by students on their way to school in the southern US state. In an Instagram post, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office reported that a local resident in southwest Florida had alerted them to the "large gator." The pathway is situated along Joe's Creek near 46th Avenue, according to the post, which also described the reptile as an "absolute dinosaur." "We arrived to find a 12.5 foot gator and promptly called MyFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife for their assistance in relocation," the sheriff's department said in the post.
Florida no longer considers Climate Change a priority. Defying "Radical green zealots," Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday (May 15) signed a new legislation that will see Climate Change disappear from state statutes.

The legislation, which is set to take effect from July 1, will also see a ban on power-generating wind turbines offshore or near the state's lengthy coastline.

Critics of the legislation, as per the news agency AP, say that the measure ignores the reality of climate change threats in Florida. This includes projections of rising seas, extreme heat and flooding, and increasingly severe storms.

The new Florida legislation

Starting July 1, the measure, as per a news release from the Florida governor's office, would also boost expansion of natural gas, reduce regulations on gas pipelines in the state and increase protections against bans on gas appliances such as stoves.

The legislation will erase several instances of the word "climate change" from state statutes.
The sections of the existing law that will be erased include a provision for addressing the "potential of global climate change" as a state energy policy, and a provision for the state to "play a leading role in developing and implementing energy management programs aimed at promoting energy conservation, energy security, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions."

It also removes provisions mandating that state agencies shall hold meetings and conferences only in hotels or conference facilities that have received the "Green Lodging" designation from the Department of Environmental Protection "for best practices in water, energy, and waste efficiency standards, unless the responsible state agency head makes a determination that no other viable alternative exists."

As per a legislative analysis of the bill as published on the Florida Gov website, the priority is to ensure "an adequate, reliable and cost-effective supply of energy for the state in a manner that promotes the health and welfare of the public and economic growth".

In a rare incident, a 66-year-old man in Florida, who was prepping for his retirement, was shocked to find that he is not a citizen of the United States.

Klass said he was hoping that the Social Security Administration would send a letter to him in 2020 to inform him about when he can start getting his benefits after working for decades.

However, he was informed that his money was “frozen,” reported News 6 Click Orlando.

“My dad’s roots were in Brooklyn, New York … And two years into my existence, they decided to load up the truck and move to Beverly, so to speak,” said Klass, while speaking to the outlet.

“We moved to Tennessee Avenue in Long Island, to be more specific. And we moved into the house next to my grandparents," he added.

The deputy who shot him has since been placed on administrative leave. However, the department has not disclosed the name of the deputy.

The footage then shows a single deputy approaching the apartment door, knocking, and announcing twice that he is with the sheriff's office.

Fortson was seen holding a gun as he opened the door. The deputy then fired multiple shots as soon as the door opened, telling him afterwards to drop the weapon.

What the Fortson family says

A lawyer for the Fortson family, Ben Crump, said in a news conference, "He was a patriot. He was a US airman, special ops. He was fighting for our way of life. He was fighting for everybody."

The lawyer further informed that at the time of the shooting, Fortson was on a video call with a friend, who described the scene.

It is at this point that Fortson is said to have grown concerned and retrieved his gun, which the lawyer said was legally owned.

News about NASA: NASA on Monday (April 15) confirmed that an object which crashed through a Florida home's roof was actually a piece of space junk which was equipment discarded at the International Space Station.

On March 8, the cylindrical object that tore through the roof of the home in Naples was eventually taken to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral to carry out an analysis.

According to the space agency, the object was a metal support used for mounting old batteries on a cargo pallet for disposal.

"Based on the examination, the agency determined the debris to be a stanchion from the NASA flight support equipment used to mount the batteries on the cargo pallet," said agency officials in an update.

A shooting incident at a bustling shopping mall in Florida has resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to seven others. According to Miami-Dade police, a confrontation erupted at the Martini Bar within the CityPlace Doral premises early Saturday morning (April 6). The altercation led to the fatal shooting of a security guard, who intervened in the altercation, by the gunman. Subsequently, the assailant was also killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement, as reported by Alvaro Zabaleta, a Miami-Dade detective, cited by the Guardian. Six bystanders, comprising five men and one woman, sustained injuries during the shootout, along with a police officer who was shot in the leg, as stated by Zabaleta. “Officers that were working at the commercial establishment at the time immediately responded, and there was an exchange of gunfire,” Zabaleta said during a news conference. “Unfortunately, the security guard lost his life while he was performing his duties, and of course, our heart goes out to that family,” he added. The wounded police officer, who applied his own tourniquet according to CBS News, has been discharged from the hospital. Local residents expressed shock at the violent incident.
