A Florida duo, popularly known as the "Glades Boys", successfully captured the longest-ever recorded Burmese python in the state, which measured 19 feet long and weighed 125 pounds. A local environmental conservancy verified the record catch of the invasive species.

The snake was found by 22-year-old Jake Waleri in Big Cypress National Preserve at around 1 am on July 10. In the video, the man was seen pulling the python out from roadside grass and wrestling with it as the vicious reptile made several attempts to bite him.

'Giant is an understatement'

As recommended by wildlife officials, the snake was later killed. "Giant is an understatement for this beast," wrote Waleri and his partner in catching snakes Stephen Gauta on Instagram. "She clocked in at 579 cm/ 19 feet flat and 125 lbs. Even just being able to see a snake this large would be a dream,” they added.

A new, terrifying drone footage captured off the coast of California has shocked the netizens, showing how close the great white sharks swim to humans. The footage shot by wildlife photographer Kevin Christopherson at San Onofre State Beach, a popular surfing destination in San Diego shows the moment unsuspecting surfers received the company of these sharks.

In the video, at least three huge great white sharks can be seen swimming around at least a dozen surfers. Most of them did not seem to have any clue that the apex predators were a few metres away from them.

This is not the first instance when sharks have been spotted near the beach. Last year in October, during one of the surfing competitions, veteran surf photographer Jordan Anast managed to capture a great white rocketing out of the water and then splashing down.

Notably, a recent study by California State University found that sharks swim much closer to humans than previously imagined. The researchers arrived at the conclusion after conducting over 1,500 drone flights spanning two years in southern Santa Barbara County and central San Diego County.

"In both spots, the sharks were observed swimming near humans on 97 per cent of the days surveyed, and often within 50 yards of wave breaks. The sharks generally came closest to surfers and stand-up paddle boarders," the study revealed.

Watch: Horse stuck in swimming pool rescued by Florida firefighters

Broward County in Florida has been placed under quarantine following the discovery of a giant African land snail, as reported by CBS News. These snails, known for their invasive nature, can grow up to eight inches (20.3 centimetres) in size and lay thousands of eggs at once. Their shells have sharp edges capable of puncturing vehicle tires, while their presence poses a serious risk to humans due to the parasite they carry, which can cause meningitis.

The giant African land snail is highly destructive to the environment, feeding on plaster, paint, and stucco, and poses a significant threat to vegetation, according to CBS. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) warns that these snails could cause extensive damage to tropical and subtropical environments, making their presence a matter of great concern.

What does the quarantine period entail?

The quarantine encompasses approximately 3.5 square miles (9.1 square kilometres) of Broward County, including the city of Fort Lauderdale, and went into effect on Tuesday. During the quarantine period, it is strictly prohibited to move any giant African land snails or regulated items, such as plants, plant parts, soil, yard waste, debris, compost, or building materials, within or from the designated quarantine area without a compliance agreement, as stated by FDACS.

FDACS plans to employ a metaldehyde-based molluscicide, commonly known as snail bait, to treat the infestation. The agency assures that this treatment is approved for residential use. Importing or possessing giant African land snails in the United States is illegal, and their presence has been a cause for concern since their initial sighting in Miami back in 1969. Efforts were made to eradicate the snails in 1975 and again in 2021, but the recent discovery in Broward County indicates that preventing their spread has not been entirely successful.

ABC News reports that swift action is necessary to address the issue, mitigate the damage caused by this invasive species, and prevent further infestation. Enforcing the quarantine measures strictly and utilising appropriate treatments are crucial to safeguarding the environment and preserving the agricultural industry in Florida.

Also read | Power napping could be a simple solution to lower dementia risk: Study FDACS plans to employ a metaldehyde-based molluscicide, commonly known as snail bait, to treat the infestation. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Florida's nightmare: Massive paint-eating snails pose grave threat to agriculture

In a significant legal victory for transgender rights, US District Judge Robert Hinkle on Wednesday (June 21) struck down a Florida rule and statute that prohibited state Medicaid payments for transgender healthcare. This marks the second defeat in two weeks for anti-transgender legislation in Florida.

What the judge said

Judge Hinkle declared the state's practices invalid, stating that they violated the constitutional right to equal protection under the 14th Amendment, as well as the federal Medicaid statute and the Affordable Care Act's prohibition of sex discrimination.

The ruling, as per Reuters, was not unexpected. Judge Hinkle had already issued a partial block on Florida's ban on gender-affirming care for individuals under 18 on June 6.

In his 54-page ruling, Judge Hinkle emphasised the reality of gender identity. He said that those who oppose transgender existence "tend to disapprove all things transgender and so oppose medical care that supports a person's transgender existence."

He also noted that gender identity is a real aspect of a person's life.

"The elephant in the room should be noted at the outset. Gender identity is real. The record makes this clear," he wrote in his ruling.

The reptile menace in Florida

In April, a similar-sized alligator, loitering the streets of Tampa Bay was attested by the police near the Raymond James Stadium where the NFL team Tampa Bay Buccaneers play.

According to The New York Post report, when the officers approached the alligator and poked it with a baton, the slithery creature started whipping its tail aggressively.

“Tape his front legs together … like behind his back, like you’re handcuffing him," one of the officers can be heard saying in the video. “Then you’re gonna do the same thing with his back legs.”

The gator was later handed to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) to find a more suitable home.

According to various estimates, Florida has over 1.3 million alligators and their population has led authorities to establish a statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP) to capture the troublemaker gators.

However, now that massive clumps of the 13 million tonne sargassum belt known as the Great Atlantic are washing up on Florida beaches, scientists are warning of a real-life hazard posed by the heaps of rotting algae, notably high concentrations of the flesh-eating Vibrio bacteria hiding in the vegetation.

The disturbing discovery by marine scientists at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) gives the invasion of brown seaweed—which is already threatening to ruin the state's lucrative summer tourism season—a perilous new dimension. Coatings of decomposing goop emit a strong odour resembling that of rotting eggs.

Even more concerning, according to the experts, is how ocean pollution contributes to the growth of the bacteria, which, if ingested, can lead to illness and even death. As a result of the plastic debris's interaction with the bacteria and algae in the samples studied from the Atlantic's Caribbean and Sargasso Sea, a "perfect pathogen storm [with] implications for both marine life and public health" was created.

“Our lab work showed that these Vibrio are extremely aggressive and can seek out and stick to plastic within minutes,” Tracy Mincer, assistant professor of biology at FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and Harriet L Wilkes Honors College told the Guardian.

A restaurant owner in Florida's Orlando has sued the state and Governor Ron DeSantis over a bill that restricts drag show performances. Hamburger Mary's in Orlando has hosted “family friendly” drag shows since 2008, and the owner claims that the bill signed into law by DeSantis violates its First Amendment rights to free expression. The owner on Thursday filed a lawsuit in federal court.

Hamburger Mary's claimed that none of its drag shows featured sexually explicit demonstrations, thus making the event children-friendly. The lawsuit filed by Hamburger Mary's read, “the performances are suitable for children, as there is no lewd activity, sexually explicit shows, disorderly conduct, public exposure, obscene exhibition, or anything inappropriate for a child to see."

However, the bill passed by the state of Florida imposes a blanket ban on the involvement of children in such drag shows. According to a statement by Hamburger Mary's, “The statute is too vague and overly broad, thereby limiting expression in violation of the First Amendment”.

The bill explicitly states, "Patients who are below 18 years of age are prohibited from receiving sex-reassignment prescriptions and procedures."

House Bill 1069: In addition to this bill, House Bill 1069 is set to expand the existing Parental Rights in Education law, which has been criticised by opponents as the "Don't Say Gay" law. The updated measure seeks to restrict classroom teachings related to gender identity or sexual orientation from prekindergarten through 8th grade. For students in grades 9 to 12, any such content should be "age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate, in accordance with state standards."

House Bill 1521: Furthermore, House Bill 1521 is proposing a requirement for transgender individuals to utilise restrooms that align with the gender assigned to them at birth.

Senate Bill 1438: Another bill, Senate Bill 1438, aims to prohibit minors from attending any form of "adult live performances," potentially affecting drag performances. The legislation defines "adult live performance" as any live presentation before an audience that involves depictions or simulations of nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, specific sexual activities, lewd conduct, or the lewd exposure of prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts. Additionally, it includes various provisions regarding the interest, conduct, and value of such performances.

Jenna Barbee, a fifth-grade teacher in the Hernando County School District, revealed that a complaint was lodged by a student's mother after she showed the film Strange World to her class.
On Thursday, a court jury in South Florida ruled that McDonald's and its franchise holder were responsible for the second-degree burns that a little girl suffered after a flaming-hot Chicken McNugget fell on her thigh in 2019.

The jury decision was split as it found the franchise holder liable for negligence and failure to warn customers about the risk of hot food and McDonald's USA for providing proper instructions regarding the safe handling of the food. However, McDonald's USA was not found negligent and the jury dismissed the argument that the company's product was defective.

A second jury will now sit to determine how much McDonald's USA and the franchise owner owe to the child and her mother, according to The Associated Press.

The 2019 incident

The incident transpired in August 2019 when Philana Holmes took her son and daughter to a Tamarac McDonald’s and bought the Happy Meals. However, she received no warning that the food might be scalding. After receiving the food from the drive-thru window, she passed it along to her daughter and son in the back seat and drove away.

On Thursday, a court jury in South Florida ruled that McDonald's and its franchise holder were responsible for the second-degree burns that a little girl suffered after a flaming-hot Chicken McNugget fell on her thigh in 2019.

“Our sympathies go out to this family for what occurred in this unfortunate incident, as we hold customer safety as one of our highest priorities,” McDonald’s owner-operator Brent Upchurch said in a statement. “We are deeply disappointed with today’s verdict because the facts show that our restaurant in Tamarac, Florida did indeed follow those protocols when cooking and serving this Happy Meal.” WATCH | McDonald's temporarily shuts US offices, to announce layoffs × The 2019 incident The incident transpired in August 2019 when Philana Holmes took her son and daughter to a Tamarac McDonald’s and bought the Happy Meals. However, she received no warning that the food might be scalding. After receiving the food from the drive-thru window, she passed it along to her daughter and son in the back seat and drove away. Her daughter, identified in court as Olivia Caraballo, an autistic child who was four years old at the time, did not testify during the trial.
A recent shooting incident that occurred in South Florida, United States, and left one boy dead and another man wounded was called a “random act” by sheriff’s officials, on Friday (May 5), as they continue to investigate what led to the shooting.

According to Broward County Sheriff’s officials, a gunman fatally shot a 12-year-old boy and wounded a man before turning the gun on himself inside a South Florida convenience store reported the Associated Press.

“Detectives do not believe there is any connection between the gunman and the victims; this does appear to be a random act,” said sheriff’s spokesman Carey Codd at a press conference on Friday. He added, “There does not appear to be a connection between the two victims.” However, further investigation into the incident is underway.

The report citing the county’s sheriff’s deputies, said a 29-year-old later identified as Darren Rosenthal, shot a man sitting in his car outside a 7-Eleven in South Florida’s Dania Beach. The police received an alert about the shooting at around 11:00 pm (local time), on Thursday.

Subsequently, Rosenthal reportedly went inside the suburban Fort Lauderdale store and killed the 12-year-old boy before killing himself. The names of the 12-year-old boy killed and the man injured have not been released. Meanwhile, a store worker Maximo Limas said Rosenthal gave no warning before he started shooting, as per AP.

The man wounded was “chilling in his car, minding his business,” before Rosenthal allegedly shot him in the neck, said Limas, as quoted by the US media reports. He added, “He killed a…boy and he just killed himself”.

“He shot a customer (and) the kid just wanted to buy ice cream. That's all he was doing,” said Limas. According to the officials, the boy died on the scene. Media reports citing Miami-Dade County court records have reported that the perpetrator had several misdemeanour drugs and alcohol-related arrests about eight years ago.

Florida principal, forced to resign over Michelangelo's ‘David’, visits sculpture

A school principal in Florida has been forced to resign after a parent complained that students of class 6 were exposed to pornography during a lesson on Renaissance art which included Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. Citing a report from the Tallahassee Democrat, the news agency Associated Press reported on Friday (March 24) that principal Hope Carrasquilla of the Tallahassee Classical School resigned this week after an ultimatum from the school board’s chairman.

Speaking to the Tallahassee Democrat, Carrasquilla said she was saddened that her time at the school had to end this way.

The principal added that one parent complained the material was pornographic and two other parents said they wanted to be notified of the lesson before it was given to their children.

The instruction also included Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam” painting and Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus.”

The kerfuffle in Florida also prompted users on social media to point out similarities to an episode of popular sitcom "The Simpsons" where characters debate the censorship of the David statue.

The statue's nudity has been a part of a centuries-old debate about art pushing boundaries and the rules of censorship. In the 1500s, metal fig leaves covered the genitals of statues like David when the Roman Catholic Church deemed nudity as immodest and obscene.

In 2016, a controversy erupted when officials erected wooden panels to shield nude statues at Rome’s Capitoline Museums during a visit by then-Iranian president Hassan Rouhani. Italy's then culture minister Dario Franceschini criticised the decision to cover up the statues by saying that neither he nor then prime minister Matteo Renzi were informed about it.
