Two 'weekend tornadoes' hit the Atlantic coast of the US in Florida and Virginia causing damage over the weekend. The tornadoes caused heavy rains and powerful winds in the states.

In Florida, the tornado wreaked havoc on Saturday (April 29) as it overturned vehicles and uprooted trees in parts of the city of Palm Beach Gardens.

Eyewitness footage and photographs obtained by Reuters showed cars stacked onto one another in an open parking lot and damaged buildings, including one with its facade ripped off and another with a falling gutter.

The twister caused winds that gusted up to 100 mph. The tornado struck near Palm Beach Medical Center, according to officials in weather services office in Miami.

"This was a fairly active weather pattern as a warm maritime air mass and within that, a lot of moisture," were among the causes of the tornado, according to Shawn Bhatti, a meteorologist quoted by USA Today.

"It seemed like just a thunderstorm, then suddenly you could see the cone develop and come quickly towards us. From when it formed to when it hit was a matter of minutes,” said a Palm Beach resident Spencer Caesare, whose residential building was struck by the tornado.

"It resulted in lots of power line sparking and arcing, which even continued after it passed," said Caesare. He was quoted by Reuters.

Caesare added that all residents in his complex were unharmed.

Police in the palm beach area did not report any major injury or fatality.

In Virginia, the tornado was confirmed just after 6 pm ET in Virginia Beach. USA's National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning. The twister landed three hours after the warning.

City Manager Patrick Duhaney told USA Today that total number of homes damaged was 50 to 100. He declared a state of emergency on Sunday evening.

Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis—widely expected to run for president in 2024—has signed a bill that prohibits women who are into six weeks of pregnancy from getting abortions.

The bill became law late Thursday night after DeSantis’ nod, just hours after Florida's Republican-led House of Representatives approved the ban, with 70 voting for and 40 voting against. It had been passed in the state Senate on April 3.

The legislation will take effect only if the state's current 15-week ban is upheld in an ongoing legal challenge currently before the Florida Supreme Court.

“We are proud to support life and family in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said after acceding to the bill.

He claimed the law would "defend the dignity of human life and transform Florida into a pro-family state".

The move comes months after the Florida Supreme Court agreed to take up a legal challenge to the state’s 15-week abortion ban on a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union, and a handful of abortion providers challenging the recently-passed law.

The conservative top court had previously upheld the right to abortion by citing a decades-old privacy clause in the state constitution that extends those rights to abortion.

Florida has been considered a safe haven for those seeking abortion since Roe v. Wade—which gave women the constitutional right to abortion—was overturned in June last year.

Florida: Battle on abortion pill Mifeprinstone heads to Supreme Court

So far, at least dozens of states have enforced total bans on abortions. They are: Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.

Georgia, too, has enforced a law that restricts pregnant women from getting an abortion at around six weeks.

Expectedly, the bill was criticised by Democrats and abortion-rights groups who called the proposal “extreme” because “many women do not yet realize they are pregnant until after six weeks.”

The bill, though, contains some exceptions, including saving the woman’s life. Abortions for pregnancies involving rape or incest would be allowed until 15 weeks of pregnancy, provided a woman has documentation such as a restraining order or police report. DeSantis has called the rape and incest provisions sensible.

There has been a national debate over abortion rights in the US since a federal judge suspended the original approval of a widely used abortion drug, mifepristone, last week.

That suspension was later blocked by an appellate court, and the Biden administration has said it will ask the Supreme Court to restore full access to the drug.

Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis—widely expected to run for president in 2024—has signed a bill that prohibits women who are into six weeks of pregnancy from getting abortions.

Florida: Battle on abortion pill Mifeprinstone heads to Supreme Court So far, at least dozens of states have enforced total bans on abortions. Expectedly, the bill was criticised by Democrats and abortion-rights groups who called the proposal “extreme” because “many women do not yet realize they are pregnant until after six weeks.” The bill, though, contains some exceptions, including saving the woman’s life.
A school teacher in Florida, United States, has been fired for asking students to write their own obituaries. Jeffrey Keene, the dismissed teacher, taught psychology at Dr Phillips high school in the Orlando area. As per a Guardian report, the assignment didn't have malicious intent, rather the teacher just wanted his students to reflect on their own lives as they participate in an active shooter drill. In Florida, a state that in recent days has been plagued by mass shootings, preparations for gun attacks have become commonplace.

Keene had assigned his 11th and 12th-grade students to write their biographical obituaries. As per the 63-year-old teacher, while giving them the assignment, he told the students, "This isn't a way to upset you or anything like that."

Talking to NBC News, Keene said "It wasn't to scare them or make them feel like they were going to die, but just to help them understand what’s important in their lives and how they want to move forward with their lives and how they want to pursue things in their journey."

Amid spike in US gun violence, Florida teacher asks students to write their own obituaries; gets fired

Even as the United States reels under the burden of copious amounts of mass shootings and deaths due to firearms, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday signed a bill, allowing residents to carry concealed guns without a permit. The bill as per ABC News gives the Republican a legislative victory as he prepares to run for US president next year. The governor reportedly signed the bill in a private ceremony in his ceremony.

The bill comes five years after the then-governor Rick Scott, a Republican, signed a bill imposing gun restrictions in the state. This step was taken after 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz on February 14, 2018, opened fire on students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the Miami suburban town of Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people including students and faculty.

Reacting to DeSantis' bill, Fred Guttenberg, father of Jaime, a 14-year-old girl who was killed in the high school shooting, said "I am pissed."

Addressing reporters during an online news conference, he said: "I will chase him down across the state as well as possibly across the country ... because Ron DeSantis today put his signature to a bill that guarantees there will be more Jaimes."

"Somebody in Florida may die ... because of this legislation. That will be because of you, Ron DeSantis," he said.

Along the political lines, reactions were divided. While Republicans applauded the bill and said that "law-abiding" citizens should have the right to protect themselves, Democrats and gun safety advocates booed the decision. 'Hands where we can see them': Cops arrest 9-foot alligator loitering in the streets of Tampa Bay, Florida

A Florida aquarium has decided to release a large killer whale held in captivity for more than 50 years. The aquarium has reached a deal with animal welfare advocates to release Lolita, a 5000-pound (2,268 kg) killer whale on Thursday. Lolita, also known by her Native American name Tokitae, is being returned to the ocean after a 2013 documentary highlighted her plight in captivity.

The aquarium named Miami Seaquarium said it had reached a ‘binding agreement’ with the nonprofit Friends of Lolita to return the whale to an ocean habitat in the Pacific Northwest within two years. Her plight was widely publicised in the 2013 documentary called Blackfish, which highlighted the captivity of orcas.

The orca, aged 57, retired from performances last year when ownership of the aquarium was changed. She was captured at the age of four in 1970 from a cove off Seattle. She then spent decades performing for paying crowds before falling severely ill.

Her mother orca, called Ocean Sun continues to swim free with other members of their clan, known as L pod and is estimated to be more than 90 years old now.

The process to return Lolita to her home was a long and dreadful one, beginning with the transfer of the aquarium’s ownership to The Dolphin Co, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at a news conference. The company later partnered with a non-profit organisation to provide medical care to the whale.

Animal rights advocates for years fought unsuccessfully in court to obtain Lolita's freedom after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration added orcas to the endangered species list in 2015. Killer whales are highly social mammals that have no natural predators and can live up to over 80 years.

“I think she’ll be excited and relieved to be home - it’s her old neighbourhood.”

The process to return Lolita to her natural habitat will require federal approval and her release could take 18 to 24 months and the cost could reach $ 20 million.

The plan is to transport Lolita by plane to an ocean sanctuary in the waters between Washington and Canada, where she will initially swim inside a large net while trainers and veterinarians teach her how to catch fish.

Also Read | Schengen visa procedure to get fully digitised, here's what will change The orca, aged 57, retired from performances last year when ownership of the aquarium was changed. The plan is to transport Lolita by plane to an ocean sanctuary in the waters between Washington and Canada, where she will initially swim inside a large net while trainers and veterinarians teach her how to catch fish. Florida aquarium to release oldest orca, Lolita after more than 50 years in captivity

A 16-year-old boy from Florida was sentenced to life imprisonment for fatally stabbing his 13-year-old classmate over 100 times on Mother’s Day in 2021.

On Friday, Circuit Judge R Lee Smith handed out the verdict to Aiden Fucci, who had pleaded guilty in February to the first-degree murder of Tristyn Bailey.

Bailey's body was found on May 9, 2021, after her family had reported her missing the previous day. According to the state attorney, she was stabbed 114 times and sustained 49 defensive wounds on her head, hands, and arms.

Fucci was a juvenile when the killing occurred and was not eligible for the death penalty. US media reports said that his sentence can be reviewed after he spends 25 years behind bars.

"This case is probably the most difficult and shocking case that this county, St. Johns County, has dealt with," Judge Lee R Smith said before ordering Fucci to prison for life, according to CBS News.

During the sentencing, Judge Smith said that he factored in several facts while pronouncing his verdict. He said that he took into account Fucci’s young age, the “heightened level” of premeditation, and that he was the “sole participant” who was not pressured by anyone to commit the “devastating crime”.

He noted that Fucci was considered of “average maturity” by his peers and that he understood the consequences of his actions.

Fucci has 30 days to appeal the sentence if he intends to do so, the judge said.

The judge noted that there was no reason for Fucci to murder Bailey, adding that he just had an “internal desire to feel what it was like to kill someone”.

“This was not done out of greed. It was not done in retaliation or retribution or revenge. It was not a crime of passion. It was not a crime that was committed because he felt rejected by her. It was not done in a fit of uncontrollable anger. There was no reason. There was no purpose,” Judge Smith said.

“It was done for no other reason than to satisfy this defendant’s internal desire to feel what it was like to kill someone. This leads this court to the conclusion that there is only one appropriate sentence in this case,” he added.

Florida man bitten by alligator when he opened front door after hearing bump

Lawmakers in Florida are planning to draft a law that would ban school instruction on menstrual cycles before sixth grade. Florida's legislature, dominated by lawmakers from the Republican Party, has already passed several laws that limit discussion of gender and sexuality in public schools.

The latest proposal, outlawing discussion on menstrual cycle in schools before grade six, has come from Stan Mclain. The proposal reportedly says that it would allow discussion and instruction on "acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), sexually transmitted diseases, or health education" only in grades six through 12, generally children aged 12 to 18.

Girls typically have their first periods between the ages of 10 and 15, but some do so as young as nine.

"Imagine a little girl in fourth grade, going to the bathroom and finding blood in her panties and thinking that she is dying," state representative Ashley Gantt, a Democrat, said in a video posted on Instagram.

"She doesn't actually know what's going on. And her teacher does not even have the ability to tell her that this is a part of life." During a subcommittee hearing, when McClain was asked by the media whether the proposal would keep teachers from discussing menstrual cycles with girls younger that 12, he replied, "it would" He made his defence saying that the bill would make sex education more uniform statewide and would give parents more leverage over curricula. Florida bill seeks to ban discussion on menstruation in schools before grade six

A new regulation that prohibits minors from undergoing gender transitioning procedures has taken effect in Florida, even as Republican state lawmakers plan to strengthen the restrictions even further.

From Thursday, doctors performing gender transition surgery or prescribing puberty blockers to treat gender dysphoria to those under 18 could see their medical license getting revoked.

Although minors who are currently getting treated with puberty blockers or hormone therapies before Thursday would be allowed to continue the treatment, however they won’t be able to undergo sex reassignment surgeries under the new rule.

Moreover, GOP politicians are currently pushing through a bill in the Florida Senate that will make it a felony to provide any such gender-affirming care to minors, as well as ban state funds from being used to cover the same care for adults, reports CBS News.

Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who is expected to run against Joe Biden in 2024, is among the GOP lawmakers nationwide targeting gender-affirming care for minors.

The Democrats have said that they will file a lawsuit in the coming months and challenge the rule.

The proponents of the rule argue that that gender-affirming treatment for youths is experimental and not backed by robust clinical research.

Earlier, Joe Biden criticised the regulation saying that it's not like a child wakes up one day and decides to change their gender.

“It’s just terrible what they’re doing,” Biden told “The Daily Show” earlier this week.

“It’s not like, you know, a kid wakes up one morning and says, ‘You know, I decided I wanted to become a man,’ or ‘I want to become a woman’ … I mean, what are they thinking about here?”

“It’s cruel,” the President added.

DeSantis hit back, tweeting, “It is not ‘sinful’ to prohibit the mutilation of minors. It is not acceptable for the federal government to mandate that procedures like sex change operations be allowed for kids.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called on U.S. President Joe Biden to allow Novak Djokovic to compete at this month's Miami Open despite the world number one being unvaccinated for COVID-19.
The Serbian, 35, formally withdrew from Indian Wells on Sunday. Florida Senator Rick Scott said that U.S. officials had denied Djokovic's request.
Florida’s blogger registration bill has set off a massive political controversy in the United States. The bill is introduced by Florida state senator Jason Brodeur. It demands bloggers who write about “elected officials” to register themselves with the government. The bill also provides for a maximum fine of $2500 in case of violation. The bill has drawn heavy criticism from advocates of press freedom. In fact, top GOP leader and former US Speaker Newt Gingrich has also voiced his concerns about the “embarrassing” bill.

All details including the total amount of money received and sites where the content is posted must be furnished by the respective bloggers.
