India celebrates its 75th Republic Day on January 26 and thus, it is an opportune moment for Bollywood to serve a patriotic film to its audience for the Republic Day weekend. Sidharth Anand's <em>Fighter</em>- a story about a bunch of Indian Air Force fighter pilots - has all the elements of a nationalist film. Chest-thumping patriotism, histrionics, an underdog hero, tokenism and a&nbsp;story that is all too familiar. So does it work? Let's find out.<br />

<p><strong>The story of <em>Fighter</em></strong><br />

The Indian Airforce assembles a group of its best fighter pilots to train for a special operation after getting intel&nbsp;on a planned terror attack on Srinagar. The pilots include Patty (Hrithik Roshan), Mini (Deepika Padukone), Bash (Akshay Oberoi) and Taj (Karan Singh Grover). The group is being trained by Group Captain Rocky (Anil Kapoor) who encourages the pilots to spend more time even when they are not training, to grow a bond. A brooding Patty takes the maximum time to open up as he has past baggage that haunts him but his gang and a flirtatious Mini help him open up.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The pilots are exceptionally gifted and brave and under the leadership of Rocky and Patty (who is the best fighter pilot in the Airforce we are told) they excel in successful missions. On one such mission, two of their pilots enter the POK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir) and are declared as missing. Does the Indian Airforce manage to bring back their soldiers from the enemy camp forms the rest of the story.</p>

<p><strong>What works</strong></p>

<p>The film heavily depends on VFX throughout and it does not disappoint. Sure, some shots remind you of the <em>Top Gun</em> series (possibly the best film on fighter jets and pilots) with the way the stunts are performed and even some of the plot points but the writers then Indianise the narrative to a great extent, slipping in a word of gender equality, patriarchy and more. These points may seem slightly unnecessary when there is an impending threat from the enemy but <em>Fighter </em>only touches the tip of every issue and doesn't delve deeper.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The first half is spent establishing the characters, their camaraderie, and why Patty is such a loner and a brooder. The action, thankfully, picks up in the second half when the airstrikes are shown indulgently on screen. I watched it on IMAX 3D and can safely say the makers have done a credible job with its action sequences.&nbsp;<br />

<strong>What does not work</strong><br />

While what is shown on screen is enjoyable and entertaining, one can't help at how predictable the film is. You know what will happen next in almost every scene. The thrills are only thanks to the aerial stunts- all VFX-enabled. But tokenism, the jingoistic lines and the predictable screenplay hinders<em> Fighter</em> from becoming an extraordinary film.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong><em>Fighter </em>wastes Hrithik and Deepika's potential</strong><br />

It also wastes the potential of actors like Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone. Even though the film centers around Roshan's character- a man who likes to break rules for the love of his nation and also a recluse- this role doesn't need the actor to flex much of his talent. He sleepwalks through the film - as does Padukone, who looks gorgeous and shares good chemistry with Roshan- but her potential as an actress is never capitalised. The lazy writing makes both their performances middling.&nbsp;<br />

Anil Kapoor on the other hand is over the top. His character Rocky has issues with Roshan's character and the two share cold relationship throughout the film. But Kapoor goes over the top on many occasions to assert his angst. Similarly, once a star on TV, Karan Singh Grover's goofy act also seems slightly forced and over the top.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Who is the greatest enemy?</strong><br />

The makers also tread a middle path with its messaging. On some occasions, it goes all out to bash the neighbour, while in others, quickly resorts to how the nation is not bad but terrorists of any kind are the worst. During the climax, the word play around the phrase 'Jai Hind' may make some of the cynics eye roll but it will surely lead to applauses in packed theatres. It plays to the gallery.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
<em>Fighter</em> is Anand's first release after the blockbuster <em>Pathaan</em> which incidentally released in 2023 on the same day. <em>Pathaan </em>created box office history with a wafer-thin&nbsp;plot. <em>Fighter</em> at least has a credible story- even if it is predictable, it still has moments to enjoy. It doesn't serve as a comeback vehicle for a superstar which <em>Pathaan </em>very ably did.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
<em>Fighter</em> isn't extraordinary in any way but still enjoyable. You know how the story will pan out from the beginning, but you still indulge the makers. Hrithik and Deepika look great, the VFX is praiseworthy and it makes for a good Republic Day watch.&nbsp;</p>

Fighter review: Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone's film gets it right despite predictability 

<p>Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone's much-awaited movie&nbsp;<em>Fighter</em> is here. The movie was released in&nbsp;theatres on Thursday (Jan 25), a day before Republic Day 2024.</p>

<p>Helmed by <em>Pathaan </em>director Siddharth Anand, the movie has an ensemble cast comprising Anil Kapoor, Karan Singh Grover, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Akshay Oberoi, and Ashutosh Rana, among others.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>What Fighter is all about?</strong></p>

<p>The movie's plot revolves around an elite group of Air Force officers, including Squadron Leader Shamsher Pathania (Hrithik), Squadron Leader Minal Rathore (Deepika), and Group Captain Rakesh Jai Singh (Anil), among others.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per CBFC, escalating militant activities along the Line of Control form the core of the plot of the film. In response, the Air Force establishes a special unit named Air Dragons at a base in Srinagar. Comprising Sukhoi 30 fighter jets and ALH helicopters, Air Dragons is an elite unit featuring the best combat aviators from the Indian Air Force.</p>

<p>Another exciting factor about the movie is the lead pair. The film brings together the two stalwarts of Bollywood, Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, for the first time.</p>

<p>One of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov's close allies on Thursday publicly criticised Russia's most prominent mercenary, casting Yevgeny Prigozhin as a blogger who yells all the time about problems, drawing a stern rebuke from a top Wagner fighter.</p>

<p>Addressing Prigozhin in a video message using the diminutive of "Zhenya" and the familiar Russian form of you ("ty"), Adam Delimkhanov, a close ally of Kadyrov, told Prigozhin:</p>

<p>"Where did such familiarity come from: who gave you the right to use the address 'ty' and 'Zhenya'?" Utkin said in a message which Prigozhin reposted on Telegram. "Certain citizens should be put against a wall for the SHAME that we have."</p>

<p>"We are always ready to talk man to man," Utkin said.</p>

<p>The UK government on Thursday said it was "deeply concerned" after Russian news agencies reported pro-Moscow separatists had sentenced to death two British fighters captured by Russian troops while fighting for Ukraine.</p>

<p>"We're obviously deeply concerned by this. We've said continually that prisoners of war shouldn't be exploited for political purposes," said a spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson.</p>

<p>"Under the Geneva Convention, prisoners of war are entitled to combatant immunity, and they should not be prosecuted for participation in hostilities. So we will continue to work with Ukrainian authorities to try and secure the release of any British national who was serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces and who are being held as prisoners of war," He added.</p>

<p>Two Britons and a Moroccan were sentenced to death by a court in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), one of Russia's proxies in eastern Ukraine.</p>

<p>The court found the three men - Britons Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner and Moroccan Brahim Saadoun - guilty of "mercenary activities and committing actions aimed at seizing power and overthrowing the constitutional order of the DPR."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The three men were captured while fighting for Ukraine against Russia and Russian-backed forces that entered the country on Feb. 24. In court, they admitted they were mercenaries. Their lawyer said they will appeal the decision.</p>

<p>British Foreign Secretary Luz Truss tweeted: “I utterly condemn the sentencing of Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner held by Russian proxies in eastern Ukraine. They are prisoners of war. This is a sham judgment with absolutely no legitimacy.”</p>

<p>British citizens Aslin and Pinner were captured by the Russian-backed forces in Mariupol in April, during a bitter fight for control of the city. Moroccan Saadoun surrendered in March while fighting in a small town between Mariupol and the regional capital of Donetsk.</p>
