<p>"When you get the opportunity to play in an Ashes series, then you try and take it with both hands," Woakes told Sky Sports. "I feel like last week went very well for myself and the team, and when you win a game of cricket, you obviously want to be part of the next game.</p>

<p>"I'm obviously desperate to be part of next week, but at the same time, I'll get there, try and perform well in practice, do my right prep, and the selection is out of my control. What will be will be, but hopefully I get the nod," the all-rounder said.</p>

<p>Talking about the third Test, at Leeds, Headingley, the match once again saw the momentum shift from one team to the other before Ben Stokes &amp; Co. finally got off the mark in the riveting series. In the series opener, at Edgbaston, England paid the price for some silly mistakes in the end moments before Stokes held out as the&nbsp;lone warrior in&nbsp;pursuit of 371 in the second Test&nbsp;at Lord's.</p>

<p>Nonetheless, the addition of Mark Wood and his raw pace jolted Australia as the home side managed to narrow down the Aussies' lead to 2-1.&nbsp;The fourth and penultimate Test is more than a week away.</p>

<h2><strong>RECAP OF THE HEADINGLEY THRILLER</strong></h2>

<p>Before we dig into how England won the third Test, let us revisit the match. Opting to bowl first, England rode on Stuart Broad and Wood's early strikes with&nbsp;Australia reeling at 85 for 4. EXPLAINED: How Mark Wood's all-round performance at Headingley kept Ashes 2023 alive for England

<p>It’s been only two days, and we are nearing the result of the ongoing third Ashes Test in Leeds. With England bouncing back in the second innings after picking Australia’s top four batters including Steve Smith – who is playing his 100th Test, batting all-rounder Moeen Ali feels the hosts are in a better position to win the match.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Australia, in their second innings, are reeling at 116 for four, with 142 runs.</p>

<p>Claiming his 200th Test wicket on Friday, removing star batters in Marnus Labuschagne and veteran Smith, Ali opines England had a good day despite batters suffering early jolts in the first session. Ali, who also contributed a little with the bat, stitching a 44-run stand with captain Ben Stokes, added the hosts have a good chance of turning the tides and making a comeback in the series.</p>

<p>"We have a good chance. It's pleasing the day actually ended up quite nicely, and we're still in a winnable position,” Moeen told BBC's Test Match Special after the second day’s play.</p>

<p>With Australia in command of the situation with centurion Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head at the crease, Moeen thinks irrespective of what total England have in front of them, they will be up for it.</p>

<p>Giving a guess on what score could be within their reach, Moeen said, "Whatever they get we are going to have to try and chase. It's still a decent wicket."</p>

<p>"We've got some brilliant players, the outfield is rapid, and it takes a couple of guys to get in. I don't know about the score - from this position, we'd ideally like to chase 260,” Moeen, who picked two wickets in the second innings so far, said.</p>

<p>Brought into the side as James Anderson's replacement for this Test, Wood ended up with figures of five for 34, picking four wickets after tea. Speaking to the British Broadcasters Sky Sports after the day's play that saw England trailing behind by 195 runs, Wood said he was elated to put up a show when his team needed him the most.</p>

<p>With the disparity in his bowling average (away 24.18 and home 40.71), Wood was visibly delighted to perform on the home soil.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I was really happy that I could show in home conditions that I can bowl as well," Wood told Sky Sports after the first day's play in Leeds. "I'm delighted. Obviously, I haven't played a Test match in a while, but to be able to come back fairly fresh and produce that was pretty special."</p>

<p>Following the previous two Tests, where the wickets offered were deemed flat by players and experts, a greener track was on display for the third Test in Leeds, and per Wood, that added spice to his spells. Expressing his views on what brought him success in the presence of exceptional seam bowlers Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad, Wood said it was the movement.</p>

<p>"Movement, that's what's deadly I think. If you just bowl fast, these top players are just used to that. They face dog-stick guys [throwing the ball] off 17 yards, so they're used to facing quick bowling. So, I the thing that helped today was the movement really.</p>

<p>"I'm usually on the flat ones, to be fair, and my record is much better away from home. On wickets like today, when the ball moves around, you're automatically thinking Anderson, Broad, Robinson, Woakes. They are your top guys who can trouble people in these conditions," Wood added.</p>

Ashes 2023, 3rd Test: Movement, not pace, helped me trick Aussie batters, says day one hero Mark Wood

<p>After what unfolded inside the Long Room at Lord's during day five of the second Ashes Test, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) brought in stricter rules, further distancing the MCC members from interacting with the players.</p>

<p>Following Jonny Bairstow's dismissal just at the stroke of tea on day five, wherein keeper Alex Carey stumped his counterpart from quite a distance, trigging the English fans over the mode of it, the Australian players, while on their way to the dressing room, got booed, abused by some of the MCC members.</p>

<p>This instance brought shame to the entire Marylebone Cricket Club, and Carnegie-Brown - the MCC Chairman, in a lengthy address said the probe into the matter and against those who hurled abuses at Australian players is already underway. He further criticised the ones who made the videos of the drama, which got viral in no time.</p>

<p>"The video footage captured on Sunday (including some which was taken in clear breach of our regulations) is there for all to see," Carnegie-Brown said. "The members shown on camera have brought shame on MCC. Their actions hinder our efforts to promote the positive things our club does to promote and celebrate the game."</p>

<p>As a result of the Long Room chaos, the MCC will provide a wider roped-off space for players to walk through the corridor away from the members. The newer rules will also restrict MCC members to be on the stairs when players come on and off the pitch.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Moreover, the MCC has suspended three members who came in direct contact with the Australian players and also asked other members to identify the culprits.</p>

<p>"The behavioural issue amongst members that day does not end there," Carnegie-Brown said. "Were more evidence to come to light, and additional witness statements gathered, further disciplinary sanctions would undoubtedly be warranted.</p>

<p>"We encourage any member with information that could lead to the identification of others involved to come forward.</p>

<p>"It is unacceptable for any of us to point the finger of blame at others unless we are willing to intervene ourselves when we see behaviours which fall short of what is expected of members."</p>

<p>The Australian camp is hopeful for all-rounder Cameron Green to recover from the ‘low grade’ hamstring strain he sustained ahead of the third Test in Leeds on Thursday. With him getting ruled out from the ongoing Test, the Aussies brought in Ashes winner Mitchell Marsh as his replacement.</p>

<p>While Green had a lengthy batting session on Tuesday, he didn’t bowl a single over in the nets and didn’t even show up at the final training session on the game day. With Nathan Lyon getting injured in the first innings of the Lord's Test, missing all the remainder of action, Green shouldered the responsibility and bowled 22 overs.</p>

<p>His quota of overs was crucial for Australia, who somehow managed to put brakes on Ben Stokes’ innings on day five and helped his team win the Test by 43 runs and take a 2-0 lead in the series. Green’s form with the bat in hand hasn’t been impressive either, with the lanky hard-hitter managing a decent 38 and 28 in the first Test at Edgbaston.</p>

<p>Though there wasn’t much of a gap between the second and the third Test, there is a nine-day gap between the third and the fourth, given the ongoing Test ends on day five, giving Green more time to regain fitness.</p>

<p>The fourth Test begins on July 19 at Old Trafford in Manchester.</p>

<p>Having last played a Test at the Kia Oval four years ago in 2019, returning with a five-for in that match, Mitchell Marsh returned to the Test side to fight for a place in the XI.</p>

In the first two Tests, the 40-year-old only claimed three scalps and looked completely out of sorts. Meanwhile, Stuart Broad has picked 11 wickets whereas Ollie Robinson has ten scalps so far. Even Josh Tongue, who made his debut in the Lord's Test, also returned with 3 for 98 and 2 for 53 in the two innings. Thus, Ponting feels the veteran speedster can be dropped for the Leeds Test with the series on the line for Stokes &amp; Co.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A lot has been said and written about Bairstow's departure. Now, former England captain Andrew Strauss -- who also served as the Director of Cricket for England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) --&nbsp;slammed Bairstow for being dozy.</p>

<p>Speaking to Sky Sports, Strauss stated that Australia will be termed as 'villains' by English fans and their skipper Pat Cummins will get 'plenty of stick'&nbsp;for the remainder of the series, but criticised Bairstow, calling his dismissal fair.</p>

<p>"Australia are the villains, as far as England fans are concerned - especially Cummins and his decision not to withdraw that appeal of Bairstow. Cummins will get plenty of stick for the rest of the series, I would've thought, off the back of that," said Strauss.</p>
