England player Ben Stokes has hinted at hanging up his boots in the 50-over format once again, following the culmination of the World Cup for the defending champions. Stokes said he would have to take a tough call, owing to the busy Test cricket season next year.&nbsp;

Stokes was speaking after England thumped Pakistan at the Eden Gardens on Saturday (Nov 11) to walk away on a high, in a campaign that was marked by a string of disastrous results.&nbsp;

"I think to answer that one it goes back to my initial reason for stepping away from this format, to ease my workload. As Test captain, there is a lot of stuff coming up. There's a lot of stuff that I want to do with that Test team," Stokes told Sky Sports.&nbsp;

"It will be a decision that I'm probably going to have to think about, quite hard, to produce an outcome. You never know the body might be in a lot better position than it was in the last 18 months," he added.&nbsp;

While Stokes mulls his ODI cricket future, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Sunday (Nov 12) released the 15-member squad for the upcoming West Indies tour. Not surprisingly, Stokes was not included in the ODI list where only six players from the World Cup found a spot.&nbsp;&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: Ben Stokes mulls ODI retirement once again ahead of busy Test season

Pakistan's hopes of qualifying for the knockout stage of the World Cup in India were dealt a cruel blow after England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday (Nov 11) afternoon.

The men-in-green needed to bat first to keep alive the slim chances of making it through but all hopes took a blow after captain Babar Azam called out the wrong side of the coin during the toss.&nbsp;

Wearing his disappointment well, Babar, with a smile on his face accepted the fate of his side and said the team will hope to put a good performance.&nbsp;

"We wanted to bat first as well. But the toss is not in our hands, obviously. We have a good bowling attack. We need to bowl well and get them out as quickly as possible. We have one change. Hasan Ali is not playing, and Shadab Khan comes in," said Babar.&nbsp;

"We are looking forward to another Fakhar innings. He has batted beautifully, and everyone has enjoyed his batting in the dressing room. Let us see how it goes," he added.

<h2>Can Pakistan still qualify?</h2>

Pakistan can still qualify for the semis but it would take some impossible cricket from both sides to make it happen.&nbsp;

The current scenarios under which Pakistan can qualify are:&nbsp;

Restrict England to 20 and chase within 1.3 overs
Restrict England to 50 and chase within 2 overs
Restrict England to 100 and chase within 2.5 overs
Restrict England to 150 and chase within 3.4 overs
Restrict England to 200 and chase within 4.3 overs
Restrict England to 300 and chase within 6.1 overs

As of the last update, England crossed the 150-run mark, meaning Pakistan could only reach a maximum of 132 runs in the stipulated 22 balls, barring extras.&nbsp;&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: Pakistan's semifinal hopes all but over after England bat first

England captain Jos Buttler is frustrated with his and his team’s performance in the ongoing World Cup 2023, but remains firm to continue leading the team in the T20Is and ODIs, starting with the Caribbean tour later this year. With questions raised over Buttler’s leadership after what transpired in this marquee event, the England veteran plans to speak with decision-makers about his future.&nbsp;

England’s 160-run win over the Netherlands helped them climb up on the points table to the seventh position with better NRR than three other eliminated teams – Dutch, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It means even if Pakistan beat England on Saturday, the defending champions will be among the top eight sides, qualifying for the 2025 Champions Trophy.&nbsp;

Robert Key, England's managing director of men's cricket, will land in India soon, and Buttler and the coaching staff plan to sit and have constructive conversations around future of English cricket, considering next year’s T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.

"I'd like to [lead in the Caribbean]," Buttler said. "I know Rob Key arrives in India today. We can have some good conversations with him and the coach and everyone, and make a plan for that tour. But yeah, I'd like to."

Regarded as one of white ball’s greatest batters, Buttler had a torrid time in this CWC campaign, managing 111 runs from eight innings, averaging 13.87. His five off 11 against the Netherlands added salt to the injury. Visibly frustrated with his form, Buttler admitted he was meant to lead from the front but hasn’t happened.

"You want to lead from the front and do that in your own performance," Buttler said. "I'll stick to the stuff that's served me well over a long period of time when I've had these little runs of form and hopefully I'll come out the other side of it very soon."

Most of the CWC-bound players are likely to sit out of the West Indies’ white-ball series as the ECB is likely to pick a relatively younger squad, with Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed to return to the set-up.&nbsp;

Considering England’s T20I scheduling that will see them play limited matches before next year’s event, the onus would fall on preparing a strong team for the title defence, with Buttler and coach Matthew Mott stern to stick around.&nbsp;

'Frustrated' Jos Buttler wants to continue leading England in T20Is, ODIs following World Cup slump

Match 40&nbsp;of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition saw the defending champions England beat the Netherlands by 160 runs at the MCA Stadium, Pune on Wednesday (Nov 8). Jos Buttler &amp; Co. have had a pathetic run in the ongoing ten-team tournament and endured a five-match losing streak before beating the Dutch line-up convincingly, courtesy of Ben Stokes' maiden World Cup ton (108).

The win comes at a very crucial time for the one-time ODI WC winners. England were eliminated from this year's World Cup after a 33-run defeat to Australia but need to sign off with two back-to-back wins in order to secure&nbsp;qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Thus, they turned up against Scott Edwards &amp; Co. on Wednesday. Batting first, they rode on Dawid Malan's 87, Stokes' 108 and Chris Woakes' 51 to post 339 for 9 before bundling out the opposition for a paltry 179 (with Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid taking three wickets each).

After the game, captain Buttler made it clear that Stokes -- who recently confirmed that he will undergo knee surgery post the World Cup -- is here with the side till the end of their run&nbsp;as he wants&nbsp;the team to make it to the Champions Trophy.

Buttler said in the post-match presser, "No, it's not his style at all (to leave the tournament and regain full fitness for next year's away Tests versus India). He's here to play in the World Cup. He wants to be here and they say it's important for us to try and qualify for that Champions Trophy and he wants to make sure we try and achieve that."

At the post-match ceremony, Stokes said, "More pleased with the victory (than scoring a century), it has been a tough World Cup for us. It was a nice wicket to bat on, had some tennis-ball bounce. We (Woakes and himself) built a good partnership, whenever there was pressure building I had a look at the scoreboard and reminded myself there was a lot of time remaining (in the innings). Tried to take it deep and cash in later. He (Woakes) is a genuine all-rounder for us, he has been a great cricketer for England over the last 2-3 years and today he proved it."

CWC 2023: Ben Stokes wants to make sure England qualify for 2025 Champions Trophy - Jos Buttler

Former England bowler Steve Harmison finds no sense in the team playing Ben Stokes despite getting knocked out of the World Cup 2023. Harmison argues knowing Ben is confirmed to undergo knee surgery following the marquee event, and England must send him home to protect him and prepare him for the India Tests in January next year. England is due to face the Netherlands and Pakistan in their remaining two matches.

Harmison added it requires strong leadership to let Stokes leave the World Cup at this hour and head home for surgery on his troubled left knee. The lanky seamer suggested it should be ECB's director of men's cricket, Robert Key, to step ahead and take this call.

"I am amazed Ben is still in the country, I don't see any point in him being there," Harmison told PA.

"I'm sure that conversation has been had but it needs strong leadership. It needs someone to say, 'Ben, you're going home. Here's a ticket, there's the plane, get on it'.

"I think Rob Key, as director of cricket, should probably take that decision and if I was (Test coach) Brendon McCullum I'd be doing everything I could to encourage him,” Harmison added.

Protect Ben Stokes for India Tests and send him home from World Cup: Steve Harmison to England management

An ageing England Team, the defending World Champions, exited the ongoing campaign following a 33-run loss against Australia in Ahmedabad. Moeen Ali, the most aged player in the star-studded side, shared his opinion on what could be the way out going forward.&nbsp;

Ali, who was part of the 2015 CWC campaign that turned fortunes for England cricket for good, which saw them lifting the World Cup four years later, suffered a contrasting fate this time.&nbsp;

Summarising their campaign, Ali put it in one line, saying, "Everything good comes to an end."

England’s 2023 title defence was in shambles despite them almost picking their best squad, barring injury exceptions. While the 36-year-old Dawid Malan was the lone centurion (against Bangladesh), the torrid form of some regular starters, including Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Captain Jos Buttler, led them to this point.&nbsp;

Disappointing runs from Livingstone (averaging 10 thus far in CWC 2023) and retiring David Willey added salt to injury, as England failed miserably to play as a unit and deliver even against the lower-ranked teams.&nbsp;

The return of Ben Stokes didn’t add any value to the side either, as earlier, he remained on the bench owing to a knee injury, while upon his return, he failed to put in match-winning performances. Against Australia, Stokes came close to replicating past heroics against Australia, hitting 64 off 90 balls.&nbsp;

"I just think everything good comes to an end at some point. It's very exciting because going forward we've got some really good players we know will come back into the squad with that fearless [style]. That start we had in 2015 could start again," Moeen Ali said.

<h2>What future holds for England’s ODI cricket?</h2>

Speaking in detail about his future in the ODI format, Moeen said he’d speak with the captain and the coach.&nbsp;

"I'm obviously going to speak to Jos and Motty and see what they want from me, whether they want me around or whatever," Moeen said. "I don't know. If they say, 'Look, we're going to go with younger players and start again' then I'm more than happy. I get it; I understand… everything good comes to an end at some point."

"If I was in charge, I'd play the younger guys. I'd just start again, and I'm sure they're going to do that. It's common sense, more than anything. You want that fearless approach again, and it's a great time to start again,” Ali added.

Meanwhile, England has two matches remaining in their CWC campaign, against the Netherlands on Wednesday and Pakistan on Saturday.

Falling back to youngsters is the way out: Moeen Ali opines after ‘aged’ England exit World Cup 2023

England captain Jos Buttler said the defeat against Australia at the ongoing World Cup in India was a low point in his captaincy. England crashed out of the tournament after succumbing to a sixth loss&nbsp;as Australia won the match by 33 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday (Nov 4) evening.&nbsp;

Speaking at the post-match conference, Buttler wore a dejected look and said he was disappointed due to the loss.&nbsp;

"Disappointment, we are having the same chat after the match. Improvements today, more with the bat, but we were still well short, no complaints if you lose by 30 runs," said Buttler.&nbsp;

"Certainly low point, definitely as a captain to be stood in this position, had high hopes but incredibly disappointing, hurts a lot. We certainly haven't done ourselves enough justice, coming into the tournament, we fancied ourselves to do well to go all the way, there's so much hard work but we let ourselves down and people back home," he added.&nbsp;

Buttler said his poor form with the bat was one of the reasons why England struggled in the tournament.&nbsp;

"I haven't played as well as I can, in such a pivotal position, I think I let myself and my team down. Only way to come back is to put in the hard yards at the nets and come back better in the next game."&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: 'Hurts a lot,' says captain Jos Buttler as champions England crash out of tournament

England's Ben Stokes is set to undergo&nbsp;a surgery on his troublesome knee after the ODI World Cup, the all-rounder and Test captain said on Friday (Nov 3). The 32-year-old has not been bowling regularly due to his knee issues, which also hampered his run at the IPL 2023. He, however, expects to return in time to lead England in the five-match Test series versus hosts India early next year.

Ahead of Jos Buttler-led England's World Cup clash versus Australia in Ahmedabad on Saturday (Nov 4), Stokes told reporters, "I’ll be fine for the Test series in India. But yes, I am having surgery after the World Cup."

He added, "Not bowling makes it seem a lot longer than what it normally is. But over the last 18 months, it’s been ‘will I, won’t I? It’s probably the first time since I’ve had this knee issue where it’s been quite clear that I’m not going to be bowling."

Stokes has had injury issues since the start of the year. He was out of the second half of IPL 2023, where he represented MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK), after playing just two games and didn't bowl.

He somehow managed past the entire home Ashes series, but bowled just 29 overs in five games (taking three scalps).

With the bat, he was at his best, scoring 405 runs including a century and&nbsp;two fifties.

Stokes returned to ODIs, after a shock retirement last year, for the World Cup in India but has not managed to inspire the defending champions as Buttler &amp; Co are reeling at the bottom with only one win from six games.

He has not got big runs playing just as a batter in the mega event.

England men's cricket team's attacking brand of cricket under coach Brendon McCullum, commonly referred to as 'Bazball' has been added to Collins English Dictionary for 2023. The word Bazball is one of the 10 new words to have found a space in the prestigious dictionary.&nbsp;

The entry in the dictionary reads as follows:&nbsp;“Bazball [ˈbæzbɔːl] noun a style of test cricket in which the batting side plays in a highly aggressive manner. Word origin: C21: after Brendan McCullum, known as Baz (born 1981), New Zealand cricketer and coach.”

The word was first coined by ESPNcricinfo's UK editor Andrew Miller on a podcast ahead of the England vs New Zealand series in June 2022. Baz is the nickname of McCullum, coming from his middle name 'Barrie', with the&nbsp;addition of' ball' an&nbsp;equivalent of any high-profile drama or investigation that adds the word ‘gate’ to a phrase.

Since then, the word has gained immense popularity and&nbsp;is used interchangeably to describe positive intent shown by any team, across sporting disciplines.&nbsp;

<h2>Origins of the word</h2>

While attacking form of cricket has long been played by different teams, McCullum took it a notch above with the England red-ball team. The Three Lions had been playing a conservative brand of cricket, especially in Test matches, which was not bringing the desired results.&nbsp;

Looking for answers, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) turned to McCullum and appointed him the coach in 2022. Immediately after,&nbsp;he inculcated the habit of playing fearless cricket alongside captain Ben Stokes.

Apart from instructing players to go for their shots, Bazball's core philosophy lies in giving the players a long rope and confidence that they will not be dropped, come what may.&nbsp;

While Bazball was a McCullum-Stokes&nbsp;invention for the Test format, it has carried over to the limited-overs format as well. It was one of the reasons why England were able to get rid of T20 World Cup voodoo and emerged victorious in the 2022&nbsp;edition.&nbsp;

Despite the popularity of the word, coined after his name, McCullum is not an impressed man. On multiple occasions, he has called the usage of the word rather 'silly'.&nbsp;

“I don’t really like that silly term that people are throwing out there. Because there’s actually quite a bit of thought that goes into it," said McCullum.&nbsp;

The ultra-positive side of Bazball, however, is a double-edged sword as England found it in the Ashes earlier this year and during the ongoing World Cup in India.&nbsp;

Cricket: 'Bazball' officially added to the Collins English Dictionary

Defending champions England have been a pale shadow of themselves in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition in India. In six games, England have managed only a solitary win and have lost to England, New Zealand and India by big margins. Thus, they are pretty out of the semi-finals race and are alive in the tournament only mathematically. English opener Dawid Malan opened up on England's struggles and feels one should not blame head coach Matthew Mott.&nbsp;

"Motty is not the one walking out on the field. We are being given everything we need to perform. As players, we need to take responsibility when we cross that rope," Dawid Malan told BBC after England's 100-run loss to hosts India in Lucknow on Sunday (Oct 29).&nbsp; He said, "The facilities and work, everything is being done as it always has been. We just haven't been able to find a way to get wins on the board. It has been frustrating from a players' point of view because we know we're better than that."

Malan further stated that players need to take more onus and give their all in the remaining three games -- with 2025 Champions Trophy qualification at stake. "I'm not involved in selection or any of those things, so I don't know how that works or who is in charge of all that, but as players, we need to take responsibility when we cross that rope," he opined.

The left-hander, who has one century under his belt in the ongoing ten-team tournament, feels only good performances can bury the outside noise and stated that the group still remains close knit despite the horrible campaign. Malan mentioned, "I guess whenever you have a poor campaign there is always someone who's going to be targeted whether it be the captain, players, coach or selectors. People's jobs are being scrutinised and players' careers are being scrutinised. The only way we can get the noise off the coach is by performing. And it is up to us in the next three games to win these games and take that narrative away because we have not performed."

"I know people say that a lot when their backs are against the wall but genuinely, we still back each other, we're still here for each other. We just haven't been able to put those performances out on the pitch," he further added.

'He is not...': Dawid Malan says coach Matthew Mott should not be blamed for England's CWC '23 debacle

England captain Jos Buttler was highly disappointed after his team squandered a golden opportunity to win the World Cup game against India after restricting the hosts to a below-par total of 229. England lost the match by 100 runs as the batting lineup folded for a timid total of 129.&nbsp;

Speaking at the post-match ceremony, Buttler reflected on the poor performance by the defending champions and said the batters did not put their hands up today.

"Very disappointed. At the halfway stage, chasing 230 seeing how well we bowled as well, we should have fancied ourselves.&nbsp;Same old story," said Buttler.&nbsp;

"I wasn't sure if the dew would come or not. Just the gut feel said that we had to chase. I think we've bowled this tournament to create pressure for wickets. If we were given 230 at the halfway stage we'd have been happy with that," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Were 20 runs short: Rohit Sharma&nbsp;</h2>

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was adjudged Player of the Match for his brilliant 87-run inning and astute captaincy. With the pitch playing a bit slow, the Indian skipper curbed his natural game and soaked in the pressure when the team lost early wickets.&nbsp;

"It was a challenging pitch, it got better to bat on as the game progressed, but happy with that win. I have got experience, it's not only about going out there and playing my shots (got to assess the conditions and situation) as well. It was necessary for me to create that partnership with KL," said Sharma.&nbsp;

Sharma added that India were 20 runs short despite the win as a few players, including him, threw their wickets at the end.&nbsp;

"A couple of guys threw it away at the end including myself. All I was thinking of was to be positive and put away the ball in my area. But yeah we were a few runs short. It's not something you see every day when you have a total like that."&nbsp;

With the win, India have climbed to the top of the points table and have one foot in the knockouts. Meanwhile, England continue to languish at the bottom and have all but crashed out of the tournament.&nbsp;

Defending a modest target of 230, England were flattened for 129 as India won the contest by a 100-run margin. Fans were ecstatic after the win as Indian bowlers showed their class and pushed the defending champions to the brink of a WC exit. Chasing 230, with dew around, it had to be England's game. But such is their descent in this tournament that they never looked like getting these. It is an astonishing dismantling of a very good white ball team. — Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) October 29, 2023 × We lose the toss, lose early wickets, put a low score, and have to defend with much dew on the ground. World Cup 2023 | 'Utter domination': Fans rejoice as India crush England by 100 runs

Current ODI World Cup champions England might be on the brink of not qualifying for the Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in 2025 in Pakistan. The top seven sides at the end of the league stage at the ongoing World Cup in India will qualify for the eight-nation tournament, according to an ESPNcricinfo&nbsp;report.&nbsp;

An ICC spokesperson confirmed to the publication that the qualification for the Champions Trophy rests on the World Cup group standings and that it was approved by the ICC Board in 2021. After it was stated that the 2017 edition was the last iteration of the Champions Trophy, ICC in 2021 brought the global tournament back, to be held in the 2024-31 cycle.&nbsp;

<h2>Cricket boards surprised</h2>

The development, however, has come as a surprise to several cricket boards. Teams who are currently in India as well as those who did not qualify for the World Cup were unaware that ICC had set group stage standings as the basis for qualification.&nbsp;

The qualification method means that the likes of West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Scotland and other nations will not have an opportunity to even stake a claim for a spot in the tournament.&nbsp;

Notably, for the 2013 and 2017 editions of the Champions Trophy, the top eight teams in the ODI rankings at a cut-off date qualified for the event.

Fans expressed confusion regarding the qualification process after Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan during a post-match conference highlighted the importance of finishing in top-eight.&nbsp;

"I mean, not the semi-final hope. It is not a semi-final possibility.&nbsp;At least, do a little better. Suppose, you have to be in the [top] ranking 8 if you want to play in the Champions Trophy. So, there are still three matches left considering that in mind," said Shakib.&nbsp;

Currently, England find themselves at the bottom of the points table with only one win in five games. Hence, England's match against India, currently underway at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow assumes paramount importance for the Three Lions. A defeat against India would mean an uphill task for the WC champions to climb out of the bottom.&nbsp;

Apart from the World Test Championship, the Champions Trophy is the other global tournament that England is yet to emerge victorious in. If England fail to make the cut, it will be embarrassing for the reigning ODI and T20 World Cup champions, who have dominated the white-ball format for the major part of the last half-a-decade.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: England win toss and bowl first in Lucknow; both teams unchanged

England’s World Cup-winning captain, Eoin Morgan, feels something is unsettling in the dressing room, as England - a side full of talent and match-winners is on the brink of the CWC 2023 exit with four losses in five contested matches. As England gear up for the marquee India match in Lucknow on Sunday (Oct 29), Morgan expressed his displeasure over watching the team underperform at this stage.

England is sitting in the bottom half of the points table after five games, and even if they beat India and win their remaining three matches later, the chances of them qualifying for the semis will still be in grim.

Having had everything fall in place for them in the lead-up to the World Cup 2023, Jos Buttler was expected to take his team to the finals; however, the opposite happened as they now stare at the exit door with around a dozen matches left in the tournament.

Tearing into England’s approach, which left them with nothing but pride to play for, Morgan said he had never come across a sports team that underperformed like this team did, leaving him and everyone disappointed.

"I've never come across a sports team that has underperformed like this England team, given the level of expectation that is on their shoulders," Morgan said on Sky Sports.

"There's something within the team that is definitely unsettled. The method, which they're trying to use and given the substantial nature in which they've lost the game[s], it is definitely called into question, the morale within the changing room and the confidence. It must be at its lowest that it's been for a considerable period of time now," the ex-England captain added.

<h2>Selection has somewhere cost England</h2>

England chief selector, Luke Wright, was confident that the team he picked for this CWC edition would do wonders, but nothing of that sort happened thus far. With several first-team players unavailable with injuries, including Jason Roy and Jofra Archer, England found it hard to fill in the right players in their places, as the result is there for everyone to see.

"They've made mistakes with selection: they've really struggled to find a balanced side and one that's effective enough to compete, never mind win this tournament. It's been unbelievably challenging for Jos and his team… they have to regain the confidence in the method that they've used for so long that has made them double world champions," Morgan added.

Meanwhile, India is one win away from guaranteeing themselves a spot in the final four, whereas, for the defending champions, the road ahead is full of obstacles.

I've never come across a team that underperformed like them: Eoin Morgan on England's dismal World Cup run

The two former winners, India and England, will lock horns in the marquee World Cup 2023 clash in Lucknow on Super Sunday (Oct 29). Sitting on the contrasting ends of the points table, with India in the top two with five wins in as many matches, while England in the bottom half with just one win in five games, both teams have a lot to play for as the fight for semis spots continues. Here is the match preview and result prediction of the India vs England World Cup 2023 match.

<h2>Unbeaten India ready for England challenge</h2>

Given how the Men in Blue are performing on this World Cup stage, they don’t look like doing anything wrong. Across all departments, be it batting, bowling and fielding, this Indian unit is getting better with each game. Although there are a few flaws that need to be ironed out, India will walk into this contest as absolute favourites.

Having won their last match against New Zealand by four wickets in Dharamsala, courtesy of Mohammed Shami’s five-for and Virat Kohli’s match-winning 95, India will likely go ahead with the winning combination.

In Hardik Pandya’s absence, the management is reported to have tried several options as backup bowlers in the training sessions earlier, with Kohli, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav being the ones.&nbsp;

<h3>England to play for&nbsp;pride</h3>

An unlike England performance from the defending champions has them on the mat in this tournament thus far. Apart from beating Bangladesh in a one-sided contest earlier, England failed to click as a unit against all other teams.&nbsp;

From losing the curtain-raiser against the Kiwis by eight wickets to going down against under-performing Sri Lanka in their last match, this England side has looked out of sorts.

With nothing seeming to work in tandem for England, it’d be interesting to see what approach they would deploy against India in this marquee tie.&nbsp;

<h3>Result Prediction</h3>

Although England is hurt and their chances of sealing the semis spot look bleak, given their standings on the points table, they can still, on the day, cause upset and hand India its first defeat of this World Cup.&nbsp;

Predicted XIs of both teams –

India - Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj

World Cup 2023, India vs England: Match preview and result prediction

England’s World Cup title defence is down to ashes as they are on the brink of a World Cup exit following their fourth loss in six matches thus far. Although Matthew Mott,&nbsp;England’s head coach, remains concerned about his side’s dismal run despite all the talent and resources available, he is sure of turning the tables in the remaining matches as England gear up for a Super-Sunday clash against host India in Lucknow.

England’s latest defeat came at the hands of Sri Lanka in Bengaluru, a team that has beaten England on past four straight occasions in World Cups. However, less for the result and more for the efforts put into the match, Matt expressed his concerns whilst admitting everyone’s position comes under scrutiny following such results.

In May 2022, Rob Key – England’s managing director of men’s cricket, appointed Mott on a four-year contract, with strict instructions that he’d be judged on the team’s performances in the ICC events and not by results in bilateral series.&nbsp;

"Jos and I are incredibly aligned and united," Mott said after England's latest defeat, an eight-wicket thrashing by Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.&nbsp;

"Rob Key has been an amazing support to us [but] when you lose tournaments like this, everyone's under scrutiny; everyone's place will be questioned.

"I'm fully determined that we can turn this around. I've got great faith in Jos: he's hurting now, and he'll be feeling like there's a lot on him. I certainly feel like I could have done things a lot better. But I've been in the job for 18 months: we've won a World Cup and lost a World Cup. I think I've shown the capability that I can coach this team,” he added.

<h2>India favourites in Lucknow – Mott</h2>

England’s head coach is aware of the challenge that awaits them – the high-flying Indian Team. The Men in Blue are the team to beat in this tournament, having won all five matches, and have beaten&nbsp;Australia, Pakistan and New Zealand among the top sides.

Mott feels for England to restore pride, they must go all guns blazing against India in Lucknow and win the match.

"[They] are probably raging favourites at the moment," Mott said. "That's an opportunity to restore some pride and confidence in the group, and every opportunity we get to play together is vital now to try and find our mojo again."

On what he thinks is England’s priority at the moment, Mott said, "We'll just try and keep picking our best side for the conditions - as we've tried to do all the way throughout.&nbsp;

"What we need to get our heads around is restoring pride… that is our first priority at the moment: to make sure we come out and give India a good scrap, and hopefully perform a lot better than we have,” the head coach added.

In May 2022, Rob Key – England’s managing director of men’s cricket, appointed Mott on a four-year contract, with strict instructions that he’d be judged on the team’s performances in the ICC events and not by results in bilateral series. ALSO READ: Arthur urges PCB to stop ‘witch-hunt’ in wake of Pakistan’s poor run, backs team to come back stronger in CWC "Jos and I are incredibly aligned and united," Mott said after England's latest defeat, an eight-wicket thrashing by Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. India favourites in Lucknow – Mott England’s head coach is aware of the challenge that awaits them – the high-flying Indian Team. The Men in Blue are the team to beat in this tournament, having won all five matches, and have beaten Australia, Pakistan and New Zealand among the top sides. Mott feels for England to restore pride, they must go all guns blazing against India in Lucknow and win the match. "[They] are probably raging favourites at the moment," Mott said. "That's an opportunity to restore some pride and confidence in the group, and every opportunity we get to play together is vital now to try and find our mojo again." On what he thinks is England’s priority at the moment, Mott said, "We'll just try and keep picking our best side for the conditions - as we've tried to do all the way throughout. "What we need to get our heads around is restoring pride… that is our first priority at the moment: to make sure we come out and give India a good scrap, and hopefully perform a lot better than we have,” the head coach added. World Cup 2023: Beating India will be challenging but we must to restore our pride, says Matthew Mott

Defending champions England are having a disastrous ODI World Cup 2023 with three losses in four games, two of which came back-to-back against Afghanistan and South Africa. England now are in danger of getting eliminated from the tournament altogether but would hope to get their campaign on track in the match against Sri Lanka.

Speaking ahead of the clash against Lanka on October 26 in Bengaluru, England vice-captain Moeen Ali&nbsp;agreed that the intent from the English team hasn't been there. Moeen has played in only the opening game against New Zealand and will be returning to the side against Sri Lanka.

Moeen also said that the spark is also missing from the England team and that the players are taking certain situations too seriously.

"Our intent hasn't been there," Moeen said. "When you see it from the outside, it's just like that spark is missing; that thing is missing where they're enjoying taking bowlers down and enjoying going out to bat. The situations haven't always been easy but still: I feel like it's a game of cricket, at the end of the day, and I think we're probably taking it too seriously in certain ways."

"It's almost having that carefree kind of attitude: who cares? It's a game of cricket. If you're going to make mistakes, you might as well make them doing what you're good at doing. And we're making mistakes anyway, so do it with a smile on your face… I think we as a group have been overthinking too much," added the all-rounder.

The Englishman agreed that the situation isn't ideal for the defending champs, but said that they'd like to go out with a bang if they were to exit.

"We've been in this position before - probably not to this degree - but we know everything is a must-win," Moeen said.

"There's no point playing the way we're playing and then [we will] go out and go home and have regrets. I've always believed - and I believe still - that if we play how we play and we know we can play, most teams, we'll beat… let's at least go out with a bang if we're going to go out. And be entertaining. That's really important because that's something we haven't been at all," added Ali.

ODI World Cup 2023: Moeen Ali reveals key REASON for England's disastrous performance

England cricketer Moeen Ali admits that lack of aggression by the team has cost them big time during the ongoing World Cup in India. The defending champions are currently languishing at the bottom of the points table and look a pale shadow of their former selves.&nbsp;

Ali, speaking on the eve of the league stage match against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, said England needed to play with an aggressive intent in the remaining matches.&nbsp;

"We've been playing aggressive cricket since 2015 and done it quite well. I think the lack of that way of cricket has probably cost us a little bit in this tournament," said Ali.&nbsp;

"I think we need to play that way, but without slogging the ball, but just be that really aggressive side that we know we can be," he added.&nbsp;

One of the biggest strengths of the 2019 World Cup-winning England side was its devastating top order. The likes of Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root obliterated bowling attacks in the first few overs and set a platform for the remaining batters, something which England have been unable to do this tournament.&nbsp;

Reflecting on the same, Ali said: "If you get your openers and your top three firing, it certainly helps everybody else and you get in the big scores aside."

"We've spoken about it, and it's not always easy. We know you can't do it all the time. But the guys are due for some runs, and hopefully, it's going to come now," he added.

While the intent is certainly lacking, injuries haven't helped England's cause either. The team has lost Reece Topley and didn't have Jofra Archer to begin with. All-rounder Ben Stokes sat the first few matches out due to injury and is yet to achieve full match fitness.

The English side has now lost three of the four games played with one of the defeats coming against Afghanistan. With the fight for the no. 4 spot heating up, England's World Cup campaign is hanging by a thread now and any more slip-ups would mean curtains on the endeavour.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: Moeen Ali reveals why England have been struggling in this tournament

England player Jonny Bairstow has opened up for the first time about the controversial stumping by Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey during the second Ashes Test earlier this year. In extracts from&nbsp;Lawrence Booth and Nick Hoult’s soon-to-be-published book 'Bazball: The Inside Story of a Test Cricket Revolution’, Bairstow said Australia claimed illegal catches during the series.&nbsp;

The English wicketkeeper-batter had strayed from his crease following the last ball of an over on the final day's play at Lord's when Carey lobbed the ball underarm at the stumps.

“The decision was that I was out, and I moved on,” Bairstow said. “I’ve not brought it up since. I’ve kept quiet. It’s on them. If that’s how they want to go about it and win a cricket game or what have you, then so be it.”

Bairstow said he wasn't attempting to gain an advantage when he ventured out of the crease and that he wouldn't want such a dismissal to reach the grassroots levels of cricket.&nbsp;

“If you try to gain an advantage, then it’s fair game. But if you’re starting in your crease, you’ve ducked, tap, tap, scratched. I’ve even dragged my bat, looked up, and then gone.

"I've never seen it happen from someone starting in their crease. I don't think you want that filtering down into kids' cricket."

<h2>Bairstow accuses Australians</h2>

The right-hand batter cast aspersions over the catch taken by Steve Smith to dismiss Joe Root on day two at Lord's, stating&nbsp;that the ball had hit the ground.

"The one that 'Rooty' fell to at Lord's, when [Smith]&nbsp;said his fingers were underneath the ball. However, they were splayed widely. But that was given out, that's fine — it's part and parcel of the game and the decisions the umpires give."

He also went on to question whether&nbsp;Marnus Labuschagne had caught Harry Brook cleanly in the second innings of the first Test at Edgbaston.

"There's conjecture around everything.&nbsp;Fingers underneath the ball when the ball's still touching the ground. Celebrating when the ball has touched the ground. Marnus celebrated at Edgbaston at short-leg," he said.

Although the series was drawn 2-2, England were left lamenting the chances they had to take the lead over their perennial Down Under rivals. The English side declared on the first day of the first Test with two wickets in the bag which turned out to be the turning point as Australia went on to win the match.&nbsp;

During the fourth Test, England were on the cusp of a famous victory but rain intervened and the match was called off.&nbsp;

'I’ve kept quiet...': Jonny Bairstow opens up for the first time regarding controversial Ashes stumping

England has roped in lanky seamer Brydon Carse as a replacement for injured Reece Topley, who got ruled out with a broken finger, in the World Cup 2023 squad. Referred to as ‘Junior Liam Plunkett’ by Joe Root, Carse will join the England Team in Bengaluru ahead of their next clash against Sri Lanka, scheduled on Thursday. Having last played a competitive cricket match around four weeks ago, Carse is unlikely to get considered for selection.

For England, Carse impressed everyone in the T20I series against New Zealand in September, earning himself a spot in one of the following four-match ODI series. The pacer also played in England’s second-string side against Ireland in the lead-up to the World Cup 2023. Since his debut in 2021, Carse has played three T20Is and a dozen ODIs.&nbsp;

Speaking highly of him, veteran batter Joe Root said, "He's a brilliant all-round package. He can score some handy runs for you, is very dynamic in the field and has a unique wicket-taking ability. He's got that [Ben] Stokes element to him where sometimes, you feel like nothing is happening, and he'll pick up wickets."

Referring to him in the same breath as Liam Plunkett, who helped England win the last edition in 2019, Root said Carse comes across as a ‘Jr Plunkett’, being similar in terms of bowling but a batter to the now-retired England seamer.&nbsp;

"He almost feels like a junior Plunkett," Root said. "He's very similar. Pudsy [Plunkett] might not like me saying this, but he's probably got even more to offer with the bat as well."

<h2>Must-win games await England</h2>

Following their worst thrashing against South Africa in terms of runs (229 runs) in Mumbai, England reached Bengaluru for their next match. They will train on Tuesday and Wednesday before taking on Sri Lanka on Thursday.

After that, England will fly to Lucknow to face the home team – India, against whom they play on Sunday (Oct 29).&nbsp;

Meanwhile, being aware of the position they find themselves in, Root remains optimistic of results falling in their favour in the games to come.

"The situation we find ourselves in now, we've got to make sure that we're ready and in the best possible place to perform well in the next game," Root told Sky Sports. "We'll look at that as a World Cup final now - then do the same for the game after that, and the game after that. All we've got to do is really focus on Sri Lanka.”

‘Jr Liam Plunkett’ Brydon Carse to replace Reece Topley in England’s World Cup squad

England's problems continue to go from bad to worse. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Sunday (Oct 22) confirmed that left-arm pacer Reece Topley had been ruled out of the remainder of the ODI World Cup due to the finger injury he sustained in the last match.&nbsp;

During England's fourth league match against South Africa on Saturday (Oct 21), Topley bowled a length ball to&nbsp;South Africa batter Rassie van der Dussen who dispatched it powerfully to him. Attempting to stop the ball, Topley got hit on the fingers and had to walk back to the pavilion to nurse the injury.&nbsp;

Although Topley returned to bowl and even picked up three wickets, doubts remained over his long-time availability in the tournament. He did not come to bat as England succumbed to a 229-run defeat.&nbsp;

ECB released a statement and said Topley had fractured his 'left index finger' and that a replacement will be announced soon.&nbsp;

"England and Surrey seamer Reece Topley has been ruled out of the rest of the ICC Men’s World Cup after fracturing his left index finger during England’s defeat to South Africa on Saturday," read the statement.&nbsp;

"Scans in Mumbai on Saturday, after the match at the Wankhede Stadium, revealed the full extent of the injury. Topley will return to the UK in the next 24 hours. He will work closely with the England and Surrey medical teams in respect of his rehabilitation. A replacement will be announced in due course."

World Cup 2023: Reece Topley ruled out of WC as England's problems mount

Reece Topley has a suspected broken finger, ruling him out of the remainder of the World Cup 2023. Topley suffered another injury blow during the game against South Africa in Mumbai, having recovered from the shoulder injury before the start of the tournament. With him injured now, England will look to replace him, but it cannot be Jofra Archer, who is already in India as part of the travelling reserves as he continues to recover from an elbow stress fracture.

Topley has been England’s best bowler in this World Cup. After picking four wickets against Bangladesh in his side’s only win thus far, the lanky left-arm seamer picked three against the Proteas (two with a broken finger) but didn’t come out to bat in the innings. Topley accounted for dangerous Quinton de Kock, captain Aiden Markram and David Miller.

On the last ball of his fourth over, Topley tried stopping a fierce drive by Rassie van der Dussan, only for it to hit the tip of his left index finger and injure it. Topley left the field immediately and Joe Root completed his over. Upon getting treated, the seamer returned and removed two batters but leaked runs at the end, as South Africa smashed the highest ODI score against England (399 for seven).

Matthew Mott, England’s coach, acknowledged the heart and spirit shown by Topley, saying,&nbsp;"I thought Reece Topley going back out to bowl with a broken finger showed great spirit. We're still waiting on that, but it's very much looking like it's a crack. Certainly, that's the early diagnosis, but we'll find out properly with X-rays,” Mott told Sky Sports after the game that England lost by 229 runs.

<h2>Who will replace Topley?</h2>

Although an official confirmation on Topley is not out yet, with England awaiting the results of the scans, the question arises who will replace him in the squad?

Commenting on why Jofra cannot be considered for selection despite training with the team, Mott said,&nbsp;"Jof (Jofra) is actually not going to be considered for selection," Mott confirmed. "He's come out, he's reported to the medical staff, but he's not going to be able to play a part in the end of this campaign."

While there is no stipulation as to having a like-to-like replacement for an injured player in the squad, right-arm seamer Brydon Carse is expected to be called up when a decision on Topley comes out.

A loss at the hands of South Africa will hurt England as their chances of sealing the semis spot have further reduced. For them to fight for a place in the final four, England must win their remaining five matches, two of which are against India and Australia.

Reece Topley likely to miss rest of World Cup with broken finger; Jofra Archer to NOT join in as replacement

When Ben Stokes heard an uncomfortable bone-cracking ‘pop’ sound in his left hip during his gym session at the Radisson Blu hotel in Guwahati, he feared the worst, thinking he was done, gone even before the tournament started. However, he has fully recovered and is in contention for a much-anticipated comeback in the XI for his first game of the World Cup 2023 against South Africa on Saturday.

Shortly after landing in India for the marquee event, Stokes and England’s strength and conditioning coach, Andy Mitchell, were alarmed by a distressing sound during a fitness session, which later turned out to be Stokes "ripping the fascia off my muscle". Although scans have cleared him of any danger, Stokes admitted to believing for the next 36 hours that his ODI and CWC return is over.

"When I initially did it, I thought I was done," Stokes said on Thursday, "because it's not good hearing a pop. Thankfully, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as what we initially thought… we got a programme in place straight away and it went really well. I'm here now, physically being available for selection, so it's pretty good."

<h2>Stokes ready to share responsibility</h2>

Stokes is England’s Test captain and one of the persons behind the invention and execution of Bazball cricket.

Speaking to the media on shouldering responsibility with Jos Buttler, given what England has gone through since the Afghanistan defeat in Delhi, Stokes said,&nbsp;"Jos and Motty have got a lot on their shoulders with it being a World Cup," Stokes said. "I try and help out as much as I can without stepping on Jos and Motty's toes in terms of how they want to lead this group. I know that people do listen when I talk. I don't try and speak too much but I try and speak when I feel it's the right time."

<h2>England ready for Proteas challenge</h2>

Two teams, England and South Africa, are still among the favourites to reach the semis, and Stokes believes playing on a fresh Wankhede pitch will suit his team’s style of play.

"There have been some pretty slow wickets, especially under the sun," Stokes said. "A fresh wicket at Wankhede might be completely different."

Meanwhile, if Stokes returns to the XI, Harry Brook is perhaps the one to sit out, with England opting for two all-rounders in Liam Livingstone and either Moeen Ali or Sam Curran for a cushion in batting and bowling.

I thought I was done, gone: Ben Stokes on hearing hip ‘pop’ during gym session ahead of World Cup 2023

After missing out on all action in World Cup 2023 with a left hip injury, champion player Ben Stokes will return to contention for selection for the crucial South Africa clash in Mumbai. England captain Jos Buttler declared him ‘almost fit’ ahead of the Afghanistan CWC match in Delhi, but upon regaining full fitness, Stokes will resume batting in nets to push for a case in the XI.

A 2019 World Cup winner with England, Stokes, unretired from the ODIs earlier this year to remain available for the marquee event. After his record-breaking 182 against New Zealand at the Oval in September, Stokes is out of action since and even sat out of England’s first three CWC games, wherein they lost two of them.

Stokes will participate in the practice sessions on Thursday evening and Friday morning.&nbsp;

Speaking to the BBC about his preparations ahead of a crucial game against South Africa, Stokes admitted to being frustrated with the timing of the injury.&nbsp;

But on the flip side, he seemed excited for his first game of this campaign, saying he worked hard to be here.

"[It was] a frustrating little niggle to get before the tournament starts," Stokes told BBC on Thursday. "But I have worked very hard to get back to where I am and making myself ready to be available for selection."

"We have had a few days off since the last game and the first training session here in Mumbai. [I will] give it a good push but, yes, I think everything is pretty good. I am in a good place,” the star all-rounder added.

<h2>‘Still a long way to go'</h2>

Given their stance on the points table, England found itself in a tricky situation considering sealing the semis berth.&nbsp;

However, Stokes believes there's a lot of cricket left in the tournament, and England can make a comeback.

"We are only three games into a tournament," Stokes said. "There is still a long way to go. It [the loss to Afghanistan] was disappointing in the moment, but at the end of the day, we have lost a game of cricket in a World Cup.&nbsp;

“Everyone is going to lose games, and it's one of those things we had to deal with quickly, understand that we didn't perform well but move on, and understand we have a lot more cricket left to play,” Stokes added.

World Cup: England receive boost as champion Ben Stokes declared fit for crucial South Africa clash

Afghanistan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz has expressed gratitude towards former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja for helping the team by being an invaluable asset during the World Cup campaign. Jadeja is&nbsp;currently serving as a mentor for the&nbsp;Afghanistan men's team and his inputs have seemingly helped the subcontinent team take their game a notch above.&nbsp;

Gurbaz, speaking after Afghanistan soundly defeated champions England in the league encounter, reflected on Jadeja's role and heaped praises on him.&nbsp;

"He (Jadeja) is a man who always gives happiness to you. He's made cricket easy for us. He always says just go and enjoy. We love him, and he is someone special for us. He tells us to keep things simple, just go and enjoy. That's the most important tip for us," Gurbaz was quoted as saying by Republic.&nbsp;

Notably, Jadeja was appointed as the team mentor before the start of the World Cup. Alongside head coach Jonathan Trott, Jadeja appears to have worked miracles with the talented Afghan side. As a mentor, Jadeja's role is little more than just focusing on the technical side of things. He is expected to work individually with players regarding the psychological side of their game, as well as impart&nbsp;tactical acumen.&nbsp;

<h2>Gurbaz lauds Indian fans&nbsp;</h2>

Apart from Jadeja, Gurbaz also lauded the Indian crowd and fans who have been supporting the Afghanistan team wherever they go across the country.&nbsp;

"We always say that India is our second home. We love the crowd and they give a lot of love to us, that's the main reason we love India. And wherever we go, like in every city, they come for us and they cheer for us and support us. So we are really happy with all the crowd and of course, we respect the crowd coming from Afghanistan, from different parts to the ground."

Owing to the upheaval in Afghanistan, the men's team has made India its base, with BCCI providing all the necessary amenities. The Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida has become a second home for the Afghan side over the years and the players have become part of the Indian fabric.&nbsp;&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: Afghanistan batter thanks former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja for win against England

It may have taken 10 days but the ODI World Cup in India has its first 'upset' - one that will be cherished by the whole of Afghanistan for years to come, especially in light of recent devastating events.

It may have taken 10 days but the ODI World Cup in India has its first 'upset' - one that will be cherished by the whole of Afghanistan for years to come, especially in light of recent devastating events. Afghanistan, playing a near-perfect game, pinned defending champions England on the mat to win the contest by 69 runs in front of a vociferous Afghan-supporting crowd gathered at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Fine bowling performances from Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan ensured that England never really got a whiff of victory, chasing a challenging target of 285. Fazalhaq Farooqi struck first upfront when he trapped Jonny Bairstow in front of the stumps before Mujeeb weaved his magic to send danger man Joe Root (11) back to the hut. Harry Brook (66), who parachuted into the World Cup squad at the eleventh hour, was the sole man who fought against the Afghan attack but could not make it count as he succumbed under pressure as well. Mujeeb, brought in for a new spell, extracted some turn from the pitch and got the Englishman's outside edge which was snaffled up with utmost glee by Ikram, behind the sticks. For England, it was a continuation of poor planning, inability to adapt to the wicket and deviating from the strategy that had brought them great success over the last few years. The champions repeated the mistakes of the first match against New Zealand where they played timidly and were made to eat the humble pie. While most might term it an 'upset', it feels a disservice to Afghanistan to dub their victory one - for they had been knocking on the door to produce such a performance against one of the top teams for some time. Even India in the previous game had to bring their A-game to get over the line, though the scoreboard might suggest otherwise. Afghanistan's flying start, collapse and rebuild Asked to bat first on a rather belter of a Delhi pitch, Afghanistan batters were off the block in a flying manner. Both English opening bowlers, Reece Topley and Chris Woakes failed to hit their mark and were duly punished by the pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. The former was particularly severe as he manoeuvred the white ball around the turf with a composed yet deadly technique. Consequently, Afghanistan raced to 79 in the first 10 overs and looked unstoppable for a big score. Things went downhill quite quickly though. Ibrahim Zadran was the first to go and Rahmat Shah didn't last long. Gurbaz, who was looking so good, was tragically run out the very next ball for 80. The wickets continued to fall as Afghanistan slumped from 114/0 to 190/6 in no time. Adil Rashid, Joe Root and Liam Livingstone - all three English spinners spun a web around the Afghan batters and reaped rich dividends for it. Just when it looked like Afghanistan's innings might come to a tame end, Ikram Alikhil put his hand up and stitched a little partnership with Rashid Khan to take his team to a respectable total of 284, which, in hindsight, proved to be enough. The defeat leaves England to do some intense soul-searching as the side looks devoid of ideas and aggression on the field - two tenets which dictated their maverick 2019 World Cup campaign. World Cup 2023: Afghanistan stun defending champions England, win by 69 runs

England captain Jos Buttler admitted after the defeat that his team were 'outplayed' by Afghanistan at the ongoing ODI World Cup in India. England lost the match by 69 runs after failing to achieve the challenging target of 285, primarily due to poor execution by the batters against the Afghan spinners.&nbsp;

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Buttler was critical of his team, especially after winning the toss, putting Afghanistan to bat first and not capitalising on the conditions.&nbsp;

"Disappointing to win the toss and concede that many, me missing that first ball down the leg side set the tone. Credit to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today. It came down to execution, we weren’t quite at the level we’d like to be with both bat and ball," said Buttler.&nbsp;

Buttler lauded the Afghan bowlers for keeping a tight lid on the English batters&nbsp;by bowling 'dead straight' lines.&nbsp;

"They have some fantastic bowlers, the dew didn’t come in as much as we expected, and the ball held up a bit too. They bowled dead straight and kept the stumps in play, we just weren’t quite good enough," said the English captain.&nbsp;

Quizzed how his team would bounce back from the setback, especially after suffering two defeats in the opening three games, Butter said players needed this defeat to hurt them.

"You got to let these defeats hurt, there’s no point in getting over things too quickly, we need to reflect. There’s a lot of character in this group, we need to show a lot of resilience and come back stronger. We need to have guys being able to perform under pressure and that’s what all of us will be working hard towards."

<h2>This was just the first one&nbsp;</h2>

Meanwhile, an elated Afghanistan captain&nbsp;Hashmatullah Shahidi said his side would look to build upon this win, going further into the tournament.&nbsp;

"I want to say that the belief, trust and talent is there. Last couple of games we didn’t finish well but the belief is there. This is just the first win, we are looking for more in the tournament. This was just the first one, not the last one."

While each Afghan player contributed to the victory, it was Mujeeb Ur Rahman who stood out with his bowling exploits and was rightfully adjudged the Player of the Match. After the win, he dedicated the award to the people of Afghanistan who recently braved a devastating earthquake.&nbsp;

"This trophy is for the people back home who are affected by the earthquake in Herat. This whole win is for them."

World Cup 2023: 'They outplayed us', England captain Jos Buttler concedes Afghanistan were superior on the day

Afghanistan men's cricket team scripted history on Sunday (Oct 15) evening by pulling one of the greatest World Cup victories against defending champions England at the World Cup stage by 69 runs. The subcontinent team was dominating from the start and after years of knocking around, finally managed to topple one of the top teams of the sport.&nbsp;

After the win, netizens, overwhelmed by the underdog story of Afghanistan, took to social media and celebrated the incredible victory and moment.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: 'A fairytale win', fans rejoice Afghanistan's stunning victory against England

Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan believes England should bring all-rounder Ben Stokes into the playing XI, even if he is not fully fit, at the ongoing World Cup in India.&nbsp;

Pathan's remarks come after England suffered a morale-downing defeat against Afghanistan on Sunday (Oct 15) where the team sorely missed someone like Stokes to steer the ship when things went south.&nbsp;

"Bring in Ben Stokes even if he is 99 per cent&nbsp;fit. You need him. You brought him for his experience. They won't have a chance to come back if they lose the next match. It won't happen every time," said Pathan.&nbsp;

Pathan reflected on England's 2019 WC Campaign where the team lost three games in the league stage and yet managed to emerge with the ultimate prize.&nbsp;

"In the 2019 World Cup, England lost three matches. They lost to Sri Lanka, Pakistan and one more match. They became the world champions despite that. So it's not that everything is over but if they get too late in playing their main team and their better bowlers, they will not be able to catch the wagon."

<h2>Stokes unretired&nbsp;for WC</h2>

The former England captain has missed all three World Cup games so far due to a hip injury. There were rumours that Stokes would start the match against Afghanistan as he was seen warming up at the Arun Jaitley Stadium but the playing XI had his name missing.&nbsp;

Stokes had retired from the ODI format in July last year and only came into the World Cup reckoning less than two months before the start of the marquee tournament when he unretired himself.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Despite struggling with the bowling load, Stokes can deliver a few overs in the middle if required and simultaneously play as a specialist batter. His knack for bailing the team from tricky situations is something that England desperately want, especially in the subcontinent conditions, cricket pundits argue.&nbsp;

On Sunday (Oct 15), a maverick Afghanistan beat world champions England by 69 runs, whilst defending a target of 285 on a flat Delhi pitch. The Afghans dominated the match from the beginning as openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran smashed English bowlers to all parts of the park.&nbsp;

During the chase, the Afghan spinners weaved a web around the English batters and neutralised them completely to walk away with a historic win.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: Former Indian cricketer wants England to play Ben Stokes even if he's not fully fit

England are not off to a great start in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition, being held in India. The Jos Buttler-led defending champions lost to Afghanistan in match 13 on Sunday (Oct 15) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi and have now conceded two out of their three games so far.&nbsp;

Opting to bowl first, England bowlers weren't on the money as Afghanistan rode on opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz's 80&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ikram Alikhil's 58 and cameos from Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman to post a challenging 284 in 49.5 overs. In reply, England were bundled out for&nbsp;215 in 40.3 overs as the Asian side pulled off a huge upset. Despite the shocking loss, former England captain Michael Vaughan remains optimistic of his national side&nbsp;reaching the semi-finals in the ongoing edition.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Vaughan issued a bold claim and said, "England in the World Cup semis." Reacting to Vaughan's viral post on the microblogging site, former&nbsp;Indian opener Virender Sehwag reminded the Englishman of his national team's forgettable record in 50-over World Cups, where they have not made it to the semis in 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and also added 2023.

“Not in 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2023. Just one in 8 attempts,” Sehwag trolled Vaughan on X.&nbsp;

Earlier, Sehwag had mentioned that England and Australia, five-time winners, might be make it to the last four. "Looks like Eng and Aus are going to struggle to reach the top 4. #ENGvsAFG," Sehwag had stated. Pat Cummins-led Australia are yet to get off the mark in the ten-team tournament with two heavy defeats on the trot.&nbsp;

<h2>'You got to let these defeats hurt,&nbsp;no point in getting over things too quickly'</h2>

After the Afghanistan defeat, Buttler said at the post-match presentation, "Disappointing to win the toss and concede that many, me missing that first ball down the leg side set the tone. Credit to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today. It came down to execution, we weren’t quite at the level we’d like to be with both bat and ball. They have some fantastic bowlers, the dew didn’t come in as much as we expected, the ball held up a bit too. They bowled dead straight and kept the stumps in play, we just weren’t quite good enough. You got to let these defeats hurt, there’s no point in getting over things too quickly, we need to reflect. There’s a lot of character in this group, we need to show a lot of resilience and come back stronger. We need to have guys being able to perform under pressure and that’s what all of us will be working hard towards."

England will now lock horns with South Africa, who have two wins from equal number of games, in match 20 on Saturday (Oct 21) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
