England Test captain Ben Stokes remains doubtful for the first Test against Pakistan in Multan starting Monday (Oct 10). Opener Zak Crawley, who missed the Sri Lanka series due to a broken finger, is declared fit for the series opener.

Stokes suffered a hamstring injury while playing in The Hundred in August, missing the home Sri Lanka series that followed, which England won 2-1 under the stand-in captain Ollie Pope. If Stokes remains out of contention for the first game, Pope will continue to lead the team, with the seasoned campaigner Chris Woakes expected to come in for Stokes.

Woakes’ inclusion will help him press his case for the next home summer against India (at home) and, more importantly, for the away summer Ashes late in 2025.

Meanwhile, Crawley is confirmed to return to the playing XI for the first game, with the attacking opener admitting that England is placed well in Stokes’ absence.

"We've got a really deep squad, with plenty of options with the ball and with the bat as well. We feel ready. Whatever team comes out, it will be a nice balance either way,” Crawley said ahead of the first Test against Pakistan.

PAK v ENG 2024: Ben Stokes doubtful for first Test against Pakistan, Zak Crawley declared fit

"I think the style will work in Pakistan, for sure," Broad said ahead of the launch of Inside Lord's, Marylebone Cricket Club's (MCC) new digital platform. "I think they're really positive and aggressive, they can find the boundary and don't get tied down by spin.

England veteran Stuart Broad backs ‘Bazball’ to succeed in Pakistan

England all-format all-rounder Moeen Ali announced his international retirement on Sunday (Sep 8). Moeen’s decision had come after the selectors ignored him for the white-ball series against Australia, with the first T20I starting Wednesday (Sep 11). The left-handed batter said he understands his omission from the squad and that 'it’s time for the next generation' to overtake.

"I'm 37 years old and didn't get picked for this month's Australia series," Moeen said during a chat with Daily Mail. "I've played a lot of cricket for England. It's time for the next generation, which was also explained to me. It felt the time was right. I've done my part."

Moeen made his international debut a decade ago (in 2014) and has since played 68 Tests, 138 ODIs and 92 T20Is. He scored 6678 runs, including eight hundreds and 28 fifties across formats. As a part-time right-arm off-spinner, Moeen picked up 366 wickets in international cricket.

His last outing came during the T20 World Cup semi-final against India in Guyana, which the Men in Blue won convincingly.

‘I am leaving with my head held high’

Moeen said he enjoyed his time representing England across formats. Ali admitted that he could have tried hanging around, eyeing a place in the XI; instead, he remained as realistic as possible, knowing that change is inevitable and that cricket, with time, must evolve.

"I'm very proud. When you first play for England, you don't know how many games you're going to play. So, to play nearly 300…My first few years were all about Test cricket. Once Morgs [Eoin Morgan] took over the one-day stuff that was more fun. But Test cricket was the proper cricket.

"Even now, I've tried to be realistic. I could hold on and try to play for England again, but I know in reality I won't. Even retiring, I don't feel it's because I'm not good enough -- I still feel I can play. But I get how things are, and the team needs to evolve into another cycle. It's about being real to myself."

"People forget the impact you make in games. It might only have been 20 or 30, but it was a crucial 20 or 30. For me, it was about making an impact. I know what I brought to the side, on and off the field. As long as I felt people enjoyed watching me play, whether or not I did well, I was happy with that,” he added.

His greatest moment

Reflecting on some of his best moments on the field, Moeen said winning the Ashes and two World Cups top the list.

However, from a personal point of view, Moeen said picking up a Test hat-trick against South Africa at the Oval was his career highlight.

Ace England seamer Mark Wood got ruled out of the upcoming Test tours of Pakistan and New Zealand due to a bone-stress injury to his left elbow. The premier fast bowler withdrew from the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka on precautionary grounds after suffering a right thigh strain during the first Test in Old Trafford. He, however, underwent a routine elbow scan, and following feeling discomfort in his joints, took to his Instagram handle to announce receiving some ‘pretty rubbish news’.

Wood to return with rockets

As a result, the right-arm seamer will miss England’s final six Tests this year – three against Pakistan in October and New Zealand in December. In the meantime, Wood will continue working with the ECB’s medical staff to prepare and be ready for the next ICC event – the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan in February-March.

In Wood’s absence, England recalled seamer Olly Stone in the XI for the second Test against SL at Lord’s, and left-arm quick uncapped Josh Hull made his international debut in the ongoing third Test at The Kia Oval.

Meanwhile, England would want to have fully fit Wood available for the next year, which includes the Champions Trophy, WTC Final (should England qualify for the final), home five-match Test series against India and an away Ashes.

"During what I thought was routine check on a previously troublesome elbow, I was shocked to learn I've got some bone stress in my right elbow," Wood wrote on his social media handle. "After the minor groin injury at Emirates Old Trafford, me and the medical team felt it was a good time to get my elbow looked at as it was a bit irritated," Wood added in his Instagram post. "I'd put that down to the normal niggles every fast bowler gets and which I was playing through. "I'm especially surprised because I've been playing Test cricket and kept my speeds up. "I work incredibly hard on my fitness, putting in extra work with coaches and physios making this even more disappointing. However, I guess this is, 'part of being a fast bowler', like Stokesy says. "I will miss the rest of the year needing time to rest and build up, fully expecting to be back and firing in early 2025. I have been down this path before and will put in all the hard yards behind the scenes. I am very proud to represent my country and there is no better feeling. See you for some rockets in 2025!" Blow to England as Mark Wood ruled out of Pakistan, New Zealand tours with elbow injury

England Test captain Ben Stokes has backed underfire stand-in skipper Ollie Pope, who has received severe criticism for his dry run with the bat. Since Stokes got ruled out of the home summer due to a torn left hamstring, Pope, his vice-captain, assumed the captaincy role, winning his maiden series against Sri Lanka. Though he has taken some brave calls as a skipper in the two Tests, Pope has averaged 7.50 from mere four innings.

From former England captain Michael Vaughan calling Pope ‘an insecure human being’ and ill-equipped to lead a national side to several stars putting him down for his lacklustre show thus far, Pope has a chance to turn the tables against SL, when the third Test gets underway at the Oval.

Stokes, who in the past has faced the wrath of the media and fans during his tenure, knows how to counter this.

Labelling this as an unfortunate case of English culture towards sports, Stokes hailed Pope for how he led the team in the first two games despite not captaining at this stage.

"Unfortunately, it's just English culture towards sport," Stokes said to ESPNcricinfo ahead of the third Test vs Sri Lanka.

"There's always got to be someone in the firing line, and obviously, when you're captain, you are more exposed to that.

"He's won two games out of two in charge. At the end of the day, I think that's the thing that he's concentrated on the most. He obviously wants to be scoring runs and leading from the front. He's openly admitted that.

"People are very quick to jump on anything, to someone who's in the firing line and obviously Pope coming in and being captain whilst I'm injured, you can say he's the easy target there,” Stokes continued.

He’s led the team fantastically: Stokes

Despite getting ruled out from the on-field cricket, Stokes sat inside the dressing room throughout the series and watched Pope captain England to two straight wins.

"But I think he's done fantastically well in leading the team. He's done it his own way, which is something I encouraged him to do, to keep driving the team forward in the way that I've been trying to do, but make sure that you put your own personal touches to it.

"I think he's tactically he's done very well. Let's not forget before that first Test against Sri Lanka, he'd come off the back of fifty, fifty and a hundred (57, 121 and 51 in consecutive innings against West Indies). And then he doesn't have one good game, and everyone's saying he is out of form. It's like 'short memories people, come on!'"

Meanwhile, if England wins the final Test at The Oval, they will finish the home season unbeaten for the first time since 2004.

'Unfortunately, it's just English culture towards sport' - Stokes shields underfire Pope from criticism

The newly-appointed England’s white-ball head coach, Brendon McCullum, outlines his plans when he takes over as the country’s all-format coach early next year. McCullum and Test captain Ben Stokes revived England’s red-ball cricket by injecting aggression into the players and pushing them to play entertaining yet fearless cricket. With him entering the white-ball circuit, McCullum has backed regular captain Jos Buttler to keep his job despite the change in the leadership group rumours.

Speaking to the media for the first time since being named England’s all-format coach, McCullum backed Buttler to enjoy his time in the middle, calling him the country’s greatest ever.

“I am very confident in Buttler as captain. What I want from Jos is for him to enjoy the next few years,” McCullum said during a presser at the Oval ahead of the third and final Test against Sri Lanka, starting on Friday (September 6).

“If he retired tomorrow, he would probably go down as the greatest white-ball player England have produced, so there is a chance for however long he plays to not protect anything and play with a smile on his face. My job is to push him towards that.”

“He has been a little bit miserable at times; he is not naturally as expressive as some, but he has done a great job,” he continued.

McCullum, who played against Buttler multiple times in the past decade, calls him a champion player and someone who is gifted and a team leader.

The former Kiwi skipper admitted his job is to allow Buttler to play freely so it could give confidence to the dressing room, motivating them to play better every time.

“He has won a World Cup as captain [the T20 edition in Australia in 2022] and been part of World Cup-winning teams previously. He is a gifted player and a fine leader.”

"My job is to get the best out of him so players in the dressing room feel bulletproof and 10 feet tall and know the skipper is going to give them that extra pat on the back and enjoy the ride with them,” Buttler said.

What will McCullum bring to the table?

Having impressed one and all with his dynamic coaching style, McCullum vows to instil positivity and style into the already daunting-looking white-ball side that has been through a lot since the past decade.

"I will bring the positivity and style I like to operate with across all formats, and I think it will give us a good chance of being successful."

"The white-ball side has been through a dynasty from when [Eoin Morgan] started it. They have won World Cups, and some once-in-a-generation players have come through at the same time."

"Now, a natural regeneration is required, and that's the bit that excites me. I look around at the talent, and they have learnt how to play from those once-in-a-generation cricketers,” McCullum noted.

"Now, a natural regeneration is required, and that's the bit that excites me. I look around at the talent, and they have learnt how to play from those once-in-a-generation cricketers,” McCullum noted. (With inputs from agencies)

Former England opener and one of their assistant coaches, Marcus Trescothick, admits being undecided over considering the white-ball head coach role.
England's Australian white-ball coach Matthew Mott has resigned from the post with immediate effect ahead of Jos Buttler-led side's home series versus arch-rivals Australia in September. Thus, assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will take charge of the side for the Australia series -- comprising three T20Is and five ODIs -- amid the England Cricket Board's (ECB) search for Mott's successor.

Notably, Mott came into the England setup following a celebrated time with the Australia women's team. He came into the England setup in early 2022, with the national side focusing on split-coaching. While Brendon McCullum took over the Test line-up, Mott became the white-ball coach and led Jos Buttler & Co. to the 2022 T20 World Cup title. Under him, England won the white-ball series against Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, New Zealand, Netherlands and Pakistan but fell flat in the 2023 ODI World Cup. At one point, England also risked not qualifying for the 2025 Champions Trophy during a forgettable ODI WC campaign in India. However, they finished the mega event with a qualification berth. Further, Mott also guided England to the semifinals of this year's T20 WC, in the West Indies and the USA.

Mott summed up his coaching stint with England and said, "I am immensely proud to have coached the England Men's team; it has been an honour. We have put everything into trying to achieve success over the past two years, and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion that the team has displayed during that period, including a magnificent T20 World Cup victory in 2022."

"I would like to thank the players, management, and everyone at the ECB for their commitment, support, and hard work during my time. I leave with many great friendships and incredible memories. Finally, I would like to thank the England fans, who have always backed us and given us fantastic support wherever we have travelled around the world," he added.

Meanwhile, Trescothick, the interim white-ball coach, spoke at length about the future plans, keeping in mind the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and said, "The focus is building towards the series against Australia and our plans for next year's Champions Trophy campaign," Thescothick said. "England cricket is in a strong position, and the potential is huge, given the quality we have available. England's Australian white-ball coach Matthew Mott has resigned from the post with immediate effect ahead of Jos Buttler-led side's home series versus arch-rivals Australia in September.

We have put everything into trying to achieve success over the past two years, and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion that the team has displayed during that period, including a magnificent T20 World Cup victory in 2022." "I would like to thank the players, management, and everyone at the ECB for their commitment, support, and hard work during my time. I leave with many great friendships and incredible memories. Finally, I would like to thank the England fans, who have always backed us and given us fantastic support wherever we have travelled around the world," he added. 'I am immensely...': England's Matthew Mott steps down as white-ball coach ahead of Australia series

England Test captain and star all-rounder Ben Stokes reacted to Fox Cricket’s social media post, poking Stokes for his remarks he made during one of the episodes of a new three-part documentary series 'Ashes 2023 | Our Take' produced by England and Wales Cricket Board. His comments came after the fourth Test at Old Trafford (during last year’s home Ashes) ended in a draw due to rain interruption, with Stokes saying he said those words to inject confidence in the team.

So what did Stokes say?

With two days of rain spoiling England’s chances of winning the fourth Test and levelling the five-match series, which they eventually did after winning the fifth Test, Stokes revealed he said those words to cheer up the disappointment in the dressing room, bashing reports of him talking highly of ‘Bazball’ approach that made headlines since him becoming the Test captain.

England’s Ben Stokes reacts to ‘lucky enough to witness us play cricket’ remarks

England white-ball coach Matthew Mott is ready to take the result chin-up but promises to return ‘bigger, badder and better’ following the T20 World Cup exit. Mott and Captain Jos Buttler faced wrath for an embarrassing outing against India in the second semis of the ongoing showpiece event in the Americas, with local media reports suggesting a change in the leadership group going forward. Although none of the stakeholders have spoken about it, Mott feels he can retain his job and be back in style.

England was there and still not there in their semis clash against India in Guyana. Though they had a couple of daunting wins to boast about in their lead-up to the final four, losses to Australia and South Africa and a washout game against Scotland, where they hit them for 90/0 in ten overs, didn’t present the best picture about their preparations.

We will come back 'bigger, badder and better', says England coach Matthew Mott after T20 WC exit

Veteran England all-rounder Ben Stokes has backed Jos Buttler to retain his job as the white-ball captain despite India hammering in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. T20 World Cup: From one leader to another – Stokes backs Buttler to retain job despite India hammering

Jos Buttler admits India outplayed England in the Guyana semi-final as the defending champions crashed out of the 2024 T20 World Cup after a 68-run loss. Reflecting on how they failed to beat a spirited Indian Team, Buttler said his judgement error of not bowling Moeen Ali on the spin-friendly track is one of the reasons behind the embarrassing defeat.

While for India, their captain Rohit Sharma (57), Suryakumar Yadav (47) and Player of the Match Axar Patel (for his six-ball ten and three wickets for 23 runs in the second innings) made headlines, England’s performers were their two leg spinners – Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone and seamer Chris Jordan, who picked three wickets.

After electing to bowl first following a rain delay, England’s back was against the wall. Rashid and Liam provided some relief later by conceding a combined 49 runs in eight overs, picking a wicket each. Though Buttler ruled out toss as the reason for their thrashing, he admitted that avoiding bowling Moeen on this track proved costly, as India, per him, scored 20-25 runs more to his liking.

“They certainly outplayed us. I think maybe we let them get 20-25 runs too many. That was a challenging surface that they played well on. But they outplayed us and fully deserved the win,” Buttler said at the post-match presentation.

T20 World Cup: Jos Buttler rues judgment error in England’s failed title defence

Pacer Chris Jordan became the first England bowler to take a hattrick in T20 Internationals as he destroyed the USA lower order during the Super 8 clash in Barbados on Sunday (Jun 23).

The right-arm speedster was shoehorned into the playing XI due to the indifferent form of Mark Wood but showed his class by ripping through the inexperienced yet dogged US batting lineup. The milestone was all the more special for Jordan as it came at Jordan's birthplace.

"Unbelievable feeling (to take the hattrick), was good to restrict them. Getting it (hattrick) at a special place is always nice. Glad I was able to hit on the target. Just finished it off towards the end," said Jordan.

"We summed up the conditions pretty well, we knew they will came hard at us in the powerplay, USA have been playing well in the tournament. Rashid set up the game for us," he added.

T20 World Cup, ENG vs USA: Chris Jordan becomes first English player to take T20I hattrick - Watch

England opener Phil Salt credited inputs from Kieron Pollard for his team's eight-wicket win over the co-hosts West Indies in their first Super 8 tie at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Pollard - hired specifically for this tournament as an assistant coach, made his experience count as England chased 181 inside 18 overs, with Salt and Bairstow remaining unbeaten on 87 and 48, respectively.

Speaking to the media on what Pollard brought to the table, Salt admitted the veteran T20 batter helped them work on constructing the run chase.

"Pollard's brought a lot to the group, but I'd say that's the most valuable thing I've taken so far is constructing that run chase," Salt said after his match-winning inning against West Indies.

"We've spoken a lot about taking eights from one side to take twelves from the other, and that's 200. So, it's really simple, it sounds so simple to say it, but putting that into action there wasn't really a point in time out there I knew I was, I slowed down, I knew I hadn't got much strike, but I knew that If I just get through that period, then we're going to be in a good position and I can have a good dip, a good calculated risk at the seamers,” he continued.

‘Win brings momentum’

Following England’s shaky start to the tournament, where they were on the brink of an early exit in the first round, the defending champions changed the narrative with a massive win over the home side. Salt, among their top-performing batter, admitted his confidence-building inning and England’s statement win is perhaps the first step in the right direction.

Answering questions about whether this England win reminds the players and fans of the last edition where they won the tournament despite being in a similar situation, Salt said, “I don't know if you can compare the two but it's definitely the first step in that direction.”

"I've already said, in tournament play, you need a bit of luck at the right time, and you need to build your momentum and confidence, and I feel like that's the first step in the right direction.

"I think firstly, it's a bit of confidence - you're going to get bored of me saying confidence and momentum, but it's a bit of confidence playing on this ground, knowing the conditions, knowing the dimensions, the wind, everything like that. Getting that momentum, that's how I see tournament cricket. The good sides that I've played in have all sort of come to the peak and at the right time,” he added.

Meanwhile, for England to qualify for the semis, they must win at least one of the remaining two matches against South Africa (June 21) and the USA (June 23).

T20 WC: Phil Salt credits Kieron Pollard's inputs for West Indies bashing as England shine in Super 8 tie

England hammered Oman by eight wickets as the reigning champions revived their T20 World Cup campaign with a record-breaking win in Antigua on Thursday.

Needing a heavy victory to bolster their net run-rate as they attempt to overhaul Scotland in the race to qualify for the second round, England dismissed Oman for just 47.

England then made 50-2 in mere 3.1 overs, with captain Jos Buttler 24 not out and Jonny Bairstow, who hit the winning boundary, unbeaten on eight.

This overwhelming Group B victory meant England recorded the largest win in T20 World Cup history in terms of balls remaining.

Oman had no answer to England's attack, leg-spinner Adil Rashid taking 4-11, while express quicks Jofra Archer and Mark Wood both had figures of 3-12 in an innings that ended with nearly seven overs to spare.

Number seven Shoaib Khan (11) was the only Oman batsman to reach double figures after Buttler won the toss.

England's net run rate climbed to 3.081, better than Scotland's 2.16, although they stay third on the points table with three points, behind the Scots' five.

Amid speculation that arch-rivals Australia, undefeated so far in Group B, might ease up in their closing pool game against Scotland to engineer England's exit, Buttler's men now know they will go second if they beat Namibia in their pool finale on Saturday.

Even a win, however, would leave England awaiting the outcome of Sunday's match between Australia and Scotland to discover if they have reached the Super Eights.

- 'Job done' -

"I thought the tone was set really well by the bowlers, picking up the early wickets," said Buttler as England returned to winning ways after a comprehensive 36-run loss to Australia last time out that followed a washout with Scotland.

- 'Job done' - "I thought the tone was set really well by the bowlers, picking up the early wickets," said Buttler as England returned to winning ways after a comprehensive 36-run loss to Australia last time out that followed a washout with Scotland. England smash Oman in record-breaking chase to reignite T20 World Cup campaign

Senior Aussie seamer Pat Cummins has dismissed the possibility of Australia trying to manipulate the Scotland game result, which could result in knocking England out of the T20 World Cup, saying it’s against the spirit of the game. T20 World Cup: Cummins dismisses talk of Australia manipulating Scotland game

England men's cricket team head coach, Matthew Mott, is hoping that Josh Hazlewood was joking when he made the statement about Australia manipulating an early exit for the defending champions.

Speaking on Bairstow’s new role in this campaign, Buttler said Jonny had done this before, and given what he brings to the table with his attacking stroke play, Bairstow will be their best bet at that position.

Eng vs Pak: England captain Jos Buttler to miss third T20I for birth of child

England white-ball captain Jos Buttler learned lessons from last year’s horrible World Cup campaign in India, vowing to push his team to do better on the field in their T20 title defence in the Americas. Following the 1st T20I washout in Leeds, Buttler spoke on how he plans to overturn England’s fortune heading into the 2024 T20 World Cup starting June 2.

England got humbled in India last year, winning three out of their nine contested league matches, facing embarrassment worldwide; however, with the ninth edition of the T20 WC on the horizon, the England captain feels his side is placed better with the dynamite yet balanced squad.

Buttler said the players picked for the 20-team tournament are aware of their game plans. Instead of telling them how to play, more communication on role clarity will make it easier for them to approach this marquee tournament, he added.

"Maybe [there could have been] more communication at times, to make sure people are clear on what is needed from them. But certainly, there are times when I look back and say I'd probably make similar decisions in certain instances, and for whatever reason, they just don't work out.

"Even if there was a lack of clarity, or whatever you want to call it, I'd still expect us to perform better than we did. It's easy to look at results and say there are certain things you would do differently or say differently. We just didn't play well enough.

"It's a chapter in the book; it was obviously a really disappointing World Cup, and your pride and confidence gets dented a bit, but time moves on, and this a really exciting opportunity now with this World Cup coming up,” Buttler continued.

Buttler replies to Morgan’s remarks

Following Eoin Morgan’s remarks on how England will face difficulty recovering from last year’s World Cup debacle, with him hinting at some rift inside the dressing room, Buttler reverted aggressively, saying he doesn’t have a reason why this England squad cannot turn back the clock by just playing good cricket.

"I don't see why not," he said. "You guys are sat here talking as if no one knows what's going on. I'm pretty sure there's some experienced players in there, who know how cricket works and know how to play T20 cricket.

"I don't think it's about trying to reinvent the wheel or trying to give people messages that they've never heard before. It's about playing good cricket. In tournament cricket, you've got to play the crunch moments really well. You've got to come back from adversity really well. You have to read the game, and play well, and be able to adapt.

"There might be games where you need to score in excess of 200, there might be games where you need to scrap and try and defend 140, on a wicket that's holding up and it's tough for batting,” the England captain said.

Buttler replies to Morgan’s remarks Following Eoin Morgan’s remarks on how England will face difficulty recovering from last year’s World Cup debacle, with him hinting at some rift inside the dressing room, Buttler reverted aggressively, saying he doesn’t have a reason why this England squad cannot turn back the clock by just playing good cricket. Meanwhile, the second of the four-match T20Is against Pakistan will take place in Edgbaston on Saturday (May 25).

Jos Buttler ready to bury 2023 WC ghost with ‘good performances’ in T20 World Cup title defence in Americas

England men's T20 cricket team captain Jos Buttler has said international cricket should not clash with the Indian Premier League (IPL), amid criticism coming his way that he left Rajasthan Royals (RR) when the franchise needed him during the playoffs.

Buttler defended the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) decision to pull him out of the franchise tournament, saying his priority remained his country.

“I said, ‘Look, as an England captain, my main priority is to be playing for England,'” Buttler told reporters on Tuesday.

“It’s my personal opinion that there shouldn’t be any international cricket that clashes with the IPL. I think that these games have been in the calendar for a long time. Of course, leading into a World Cup, your No. 1 priority is playing for England and performing for England. I feel like this is the best preparation,” he added.

Former England Captain Andrew Strauss was honest in his goodbye words for veteran seamer James Anderson, who announced his retirement the past week. ‘It's depressing to think he made his England debut before I did...’ – Strauss says goodbye to Anderson

Former Test veteran Stuart Broad said England’s ‘inexperienced’ bowling attack could get exposed in James Anderson’s absence this summer. Anderson, who announced his retirement from Tests, will play his farewell match, his 188th in this format, against West Indies on July 10 at the Lord’s. Broad expressed his concerns, saying if they overlook Woakes and Wood in the side, they could have four players playing together with the experience of 20 Tests combined.

Broad also considered the probability of Test Captain Stokes not bowling, given his knee injury, for which he ruled himself out of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA.

Speaking on the Sky Sports podcast, Broad said, "England could easily go into a Test match this summer with a very, very inexperienced bowling group."

"If you don't play a (Chris) Woakes, Mark Wood has a rest, and there's no Jimmy Anderson, you could have three seamers and a spinner out there potentially with 20 caps between them.

"That's quite scary as a Test captain I would have thought. We don't know how much (Ben) Stokesy's going to bowl - we hope he does.

"But that could leave you a bit exposed. There's only one way to find out with bowlers, and that's to give them a go,” Broad continued.

Broad gives a solution

Having played 167 Tests and picked 607 wickets, Broad explains what England can do to ensure a smooth transition once Anderson leaves. The former seamer said the management must ask the inexperienced unit to communicate better and solve problems during a live Test, helping them gel together.

With an eye on the home five-match series against India next year and, importantly, the 2025 away Ashes, England must find their right balance in the bowling attack till then.

Returning to Anderson, Broad admits that his absence will leave a huge void, and someone has to step up to fill it.

England great James Anderson will take a call on his illustrious Test career following recent talks with Test head coach Brendon McCullum, per the latest reports. Anderson, 41, is the third-highest wicket-taker in Tests with 700 wickets from 187 matches and the leading-most among all pacers to play this game.

Per a Guardian report, McCullum flew from New Zealand to the UK to meet Anderson in person and talk about the future, mainly concentrating on the build-up for next year’s Ashes. Speaking with James over a game of golf, McCullum is said to have conveyed his plans of looking beyond him following the upcoming English summer.

Anderson created history during the away winter India tour earlier this year, completing 700 wickets – most by a seamer and counting. Even at this age, he bowled over 110 overs across seven innings, picking just ten wickets. Although he’s been a revelation with the new ball, both at home and away, Anderson struggled to leave an impact during the home Ashes last year, picking just five wickets at an average of over 85 across four Tests.

Meanwhile, following the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA, England will host West Indies for three Tests in July, with Sri Lanka coming over next for the three-match series. England’s series against Sri Lanka starts with a Test in Old Trafford in August - Anderson’s home ground.

Although this number is impressive considering every era, it’s still third behind McGrath and Warne (1001) and Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas (895).

England great James Anderson to retire from Tests after chat with coach McCullum

On Wednesday (May 1), former England captain Michael Vaughan predicted the semifinalists of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The upcoming edition will be held in the West Indies and USA in June. Many major teams have announced their squads for the mega event and, thus, Vaughan shared his last four for the ninth edition. While many former cricketers and experts have named India and Australia or India and England as the two finalists, Vaughan made a bold claim by not including the Asian giants.

Many major teams have announced their squads for the mega event and, thus, Vaughan shared his last four for the ninth edition. While many former cricketers and experts have named India and Australia or India and England as the two finalists, Vaughan made a bold claim by not including the Asian giants. Neither India nor Pakistan! Vaughan's T20 WC semifinalists are defending champions England, Australia, South Africa and co-hosts West Indies. He wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "My 4 Semi finalists for the T20 WC … England, Austrlalia, South Africa and the West Indies .. #T20WC2024" Here is the post: My 4 Semi finalists for the T20 WC … England,Austrlalia,South Africa and the West Indies .. #T20WC2024 — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) May 1, 2024 × Also read: T20 World Cup: Sunil Gavaskar names THIS India pacer who should have been in Men in Blue's squad Barring the Rovman Powell-led West Indies, all the other three teams have announced their respective squads. Pakistan have also not announced their 15-man squad but they are expected to reveal it by Wednesday, which is the cutoff date for all participating teams. Meanwhile, the BCCI announced India's 15-man squad on Tuesday (April 30). Rohit Sharma will spearhead the Men in Blue with regulars such as Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah also being part of the squad. Rishabh Pant -- who made his return to competitive cricket in the ongoing IPL 2024 edition -- and Sanju Samson have also been picked. Shivam Dube is also part of the main squad, which doesn't comprise Rinku Singh and KL Rahul. The likes of Shubman Gill, Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan and Rinku are part of the reserves.
