On Thursday (April 18), Raman Subba Row -- former England opener -- passed away at the age of 92. He was England's oldest living men's Test cricketer. The ex-Englishman was mainly known for his role as a cricket administrator, who brought advertisement and changed the game completely. Meanwhile, Subba Row's playing career comprised 13 Tests between 1958 and 1961, including three centuries at an average of 46.85.

Subba Row, son of a London-based Indian lawyer, retired from international cricket at the young age of 29. He, however, remained close to the game, serving as chairman of Surrey. His contributions also helped in establishing the Test and County Cricket Board (TCCB) - the forerunner of the England Cricket Board (ECB).

ECB chair Richard Thompson said, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, "We are extremely saddened to hear of Raman's passing." He further opined, "He was a great cricket man and his remarkable cricket career saw success both on and off the field - as a player, official, administrator and Chair of both Surrey and the Test and County Cricket Board. Our sport owes him an enormous debt of gratitude, and on behalf of the ECB, we would like to send our sincere condolences to Raman's friends and family at this sad time."

Despite the criticism, Row’s reforms were appreciated by those who understood that first-class games were in dire need of income amid shrinking crowds. T20 World Cup: It would be special to emulate 2010 success, says England keeper-batter Jonny Bairstow

Bazball has gone for a toss following England’s 1-4 series loss at the hands of India in away conditions. Captain Ben Stokes and his touring English side won the first Test in Hyderabad but lost the remaining four matches to surrender the five-match series, leading everyone to question their ultra-attacking approach. Ravi Ashwin, India’s protagonist in their massive win, shared his thoughts on why a process that he thinks has a future failed in India this time.

From playing his 100th Test (in Dharamsala) to picking his 500th Test wicket (becoming the second Indian after Kumble), Ashwin achieved several records during the home series against England. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin addressed the reasons behind why Bazball failed in India.

The ace spinner admitted that though England’s newest approach put India under tremendous pressure throughout the series, the Indian Team maintaining the right balance helped them cross the line on four out of five occasions.

“So many people have commented that they lost 1-4, but in my opinion, we really came under immense pressure in the series. If the team manages to get the right balance, it is bound for success,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Citing the example of Zak Crawley’s dismissal in the first innings of the final Test (in Dharamsala), Ashwin explained where England went wrong in their approach and how it affected their game and result.

“Kuldeep’s Zak Crawley dismissal was a beauty. He had hit a boundary between covers and mid-off just on over back. So he was in good flow. The gap still existed as bait for him. He tried again, got cramped, and the ball passed between his gates. He had already hit four-five boundaries. It’s not that we bowled fuller suddenly.

“When such a high-risk shot is played, he loses his wicket. Crawley’s scores in the 60s and 70s are pearls that missed becoming a hundred because of his high-risk cricket,” Ashwin, who picked nine wickets in the last Test, said.

England missed a chance

Seemingly impressed with Bazball and England's road to this India series, Ashwin said England missed a massive opportunity by ruining it themselves and that Stokes and England can learn from this series loss.

“Bazball is about the transfer of pressure onto the opponents. But after the transfer of pressure, what happens? They should be like, ‘We have to make them pay!’ If they manage to do that, then the game is on. This series would have gone their way with the inexperience we had (in our ranks).

“They had a huge chance. Even before they came here, they were down 0-2 in the Ashes and levelled it at 2-2. They then plundered Pakistan at their home. But this series loss is something that Ben Stokes and Co could learn from,” Ashwin concluded.

‘I know many will ask...’: England batter Harry Brook reveals why he pulled out of IPL 2024

Former England captain Geoffrey Boycott has made a big statement, calling Ben Stokes & Co. to look beyond star pacer James Anderson. Anderson recently became the first-ever pacer to claim 700, or more, wickets in Tests during the India series. However, he had an ordinary run in the five-match series versus Rohit Sharma-led hosts, ending with 10 wickets in four games. Boycott believes England 'cannot keep wrapping Anderson in cotton wool and picking him on sentiment forever'.

In his coloumn for The Telegraph, Boycott expressed disappointment in how England used Anderson in the India series and feels they under-bowled him, reducing his impact. He wrote, "Jimmy Anderson deserves all the adulation and plaudits for staying fit to play 187 Test matches and reach 700 wickets but, because of his age, he is used too sparingly. England cannot keep wrapping him in cotton wool and picking him on sentiment forever."

Boycott further opined that Anderson isn't someone who would be very useful Down Under when England tour Australia in 2025/26 for the Ashes. Hence, he feels the team management needs to bring in pacers who can bowl long spells on placid surfaces. Thus, he reckoned, "Josh Tongue played at Lord’s against Australia and took five wickets and has never been seen again. Matt Potts 23 wickets in six Tests but has not played since the Ireland game last summer."

At present, Anderson has not talked about his retirement plans. Talking about Stokes-led England, they are languishing in the eighth place in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points table with six defeats from 10 games.
England Test coach Brendon McCullum is not shying away from accepting the thrashing his team suffered at the hands of India in the recently concluded Test series. After winning the first Test in Hyderabad dramatically, England lost the remaining four Tests to go down 1-4 in what was thought to be a tight contest between two top nations.

Speaking after his team’s loss by an innings and 64 runs in the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala, McCullum admitted that Bazball – a name media gave to England’s fearless and ultra-attacking approach since Brendon and Ben Stokes took over the charge, got exposed big time and, it’s time for some uncomfortable confrontations to ensure players in the dressing room are honest to their motive of providing entertainment to the fans.

"Sometimes, you can get away with things," McCullum said.

"But when you're exposed the way, we have been in the back end of this series in particular, it does require some pretty deep thinking and some adjustment to make sure we're staying true to what we believe in,” the head coach added.

IND v ENG: Nasser Hussain lashes out at Ben Stokes-led England over series loss

England captain Ben Stokes admits to accepting the embarrassing defeat at the hands of India in the recently concluded Test series but claims that it cannot dent the brand of cricket (the world now calls Bazball) that led to his side’s revival in Test cricket. Stokes said while England had their moments in each of the last four Tests that they lost, they failed to turn it around for the better, thus going down 1-4 in this five-match series.

Stokes admitted his team was outplayed by a better side in away conditions instead of looking into excuses that led to this scoreline. He added that they look forward to what awaits them later this year, with Test series against Pakistan and New Zealand scheduled.

"Now that the series has come to an end - I don't give too much away, obviously, whilst the series is going on - but since the first Test match of the series, we're man enough, and we're big enough to say that we've been outplayed by the better team in the series," Stokes said.

"But we've got so much cricket coming up in our summer, and then Pakistan and New Zealand. Taking the positives that we've got from the series is something that I'm really looking forward to. I'm excited to be a part of driving this team even further forward,” Stokes added.

In the lead-up to this series, the English media hyped the Bazball style of play, pushing for them to break the ice of beating India in India. That, however, didn’t happen. Although England won the first Test in Hyderabad, they lost the next four matches to suffer a series defeat.

"…we ain't gonna let the last two years go to waste over this series in isolation," Stokes said.

"When you look at the game as a whole, and the series as a whole, there's been really small moments throughout every Test match where we wrestled a bit of momentum back towards us, but we've not just been able to maintain and keep that going," Stokes added.

Dharamsala Test: ‘As a coach I couldn’t be prouder of this team’ – Dravid on India’s series win over England

Former England captain Alastair Cook lauded emotionless Joe Root for completing his 31st Test hundred and bailing England out of trouble after a jittery start. Cook said Root played like Root, showing composure when required instead of playing an ultra-attacking brand of cricket. Root remained unbeaten on 122 in the first innings as England scored 353 after electing to bat first in Ranchi.

After receiving backlash for playing ‘the worst shot in England Test history’, mentioned by one of the British newspapers, Root kept it calm and took on the Indian attack his way – the Joe Root way in the fourth Test. That helped England take a breather after losing five wickets in the first session on day one.

Cook lauded his former teammate and Test captain for returning to scoring runs without being emotional and getting carried away with Bazball-style cricket.

Until this point in this series, Root was getting out cheaply but now picked up form at the right time.

This is a clip of someone with the shots you’d expect Joe Root to play (Cook was speaking while a video of Root’s innings was being played).
'He played beautifully'

It’s never easy for a batter to pile up runs and stitch partnerships with tailenders, but Root enjoyed his time in the middle with the bowlers, especially with Ollie Robinson, who hit his maiden Test fifty. The pair added over 100 runs for the eighth wicket.

“Root has played beautifully today. It has been a very different Root to what we have seen in the series, one who has been playing with control…It has been very un-Bazball, for those who like the entertainment but very effective,” Cook said.

IND v ENG 2024: Rehan Ahmed returns home mid-tour due to family emergency

England’s plan A has failed, putting them in a spot of bother against India in the ongoing five-match series. Following an embarrassing 434-run beating in the third Test in Rajkot, Captain Ben Stokes is contemplating risking bowling himself in the final two Tests to help England turn the tide.

A day after commenting on his side's chances of making a comeback in the series, despite being down 1-2, Stokes said he felt 'great' bowling in the nets lately and only after consulting with the team doctors that he will take a call on resuming bowling in Tests.

Speaking with media outlet TNT after England’s heaviest defeat in Tests since 1934, Stokes said he felt he could have bowled in Rajkot, but that would have been stupid, considering he is yet to get a green signal from the medical staff. Stokes admitted that his recovery has happened more swiftly than he anticipated and doesn’t rule out him sharing the bowlers’ workload in the final two Tests.

Veteran England seamer James Anderson has no plans to retire from cricket, but whenever he does, he wants to do it on a nice note, bowing out on his terms.
Ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was penalised on day two of the ongoing Rajkot Test against England for running on the protected area of the pitch. The on-field umpires had already warned the home side when Ravindra Jadeja, on day one, did the same; when this incident occurred for the second time, they penalised Ashwin – giving England an extra five-run cushion to start their innings. As a result, England’s scorecard while starting their first innings will read 5/0.

Per the law book, the protected area is referred to as, "that area of the pitch contained within a rectangle bounded at each end by imaginary lines parallel to the popping creases and 5 ft/1.52 m in front of each, and on the sides by imaginary lines, one each side of the imaginary line joining the centres of the two middle stumps, each parallel to it and 1 ft/30.48 cm from it".

IND v ENG, Rajkot Test: Here’s why England will start their first innings with five runs on board

England captain Ben Stokes will be playing his 100th Test when his side takes on India in the third Test in Rajkot, which gets underway on Feb 15 (Thursday). Ahead of the commencement of the third Test versus India, England Test vice-captain Ollie Pope lavished huge praise on Stokes and stated that it is an 'unbelievable achievement' to play 100 Tests. Stokes has been one of the greats of the modern-day game and has 6,251 runs and 197 wickets in 99 Tests.

Ahead of Stokes' 100th Test, Pope addressed the media in the pre-match press conference and said, "Unbelievable achievement to play 100 Tests. Since he has been the captain there have been so many special moments." The English all-rounder has had a remarkable run in international cricket, especially in the purest format of the game. He has won several games from nowhere with both bat and ball and has changed England's playing style completely ever since he took over as the Test captain in early 2022.

Stokes-led England have pushed India to the back foot in the opening two Tests and not given anything to them easily, while relying on their Bazball approach.

In the Test series versus India, Stokes has looked good with the bat but is yet to come up with bigger knocks. He has not bowled yet in the series and Pope indicated that he might bowl in Rajkot. He added, "Not sure if Ben Stokes will be available to bowl in the Rajkot Test, he is working to get his knee right." Stokes is three wickets away from 200 Test scalps and the English captain would love to get to the milestone in his landmark Test.

Ind vs Eng | 'Unbelievable achievement': Pope lauds Stokes as England captain gears up for 100th Test

England suffered a blow to their chances of scripting history in India as their lead spinner, Jack Leach, got ruled out from the remainder of the series with a knee injury. The left-handed orthodox spinner got injured during day one of the Hyderabad Test, playing a limited role in the famous win for the visitors. Jack hurt his knee while trying to stop the ball from going to the boundary. Leach missed the second Test in Vizag.

Meanwhile, the medical staff attended Leach after the first day’s play in Hyderabad and, after examining the swelling on his knees, informed Leach and the England management of his limited contribution to the game. Leach bowled a maximum of four overs in the Test after that, picking Shreyas Iyer’s wicket in the second innings, eventually helping England win the curtain-raiser by 28 runs.

After the second Test in Vizag, which India won by 106 runs, Leach had around ten days to recover from the knee injury, with England management hoping against hope that he would attain full fitness. But that didn’t happen, as Leach is now ruled out of the remainder of the three Tests, starting with the third one in Rajkot on Thursday (Feb 15).

Per the statement released by the ECB, Leach underwent assessment in Abu Dhabi and will now head home for further treatment.

"He will fly home from Abu Dhabi in the next 24 hours, where the England team have been staying ahead of the third Test in Rajkot, which starts on Thursday,” ECB’s latest statement said. "Leach will work closely with the England and Somerset medical teams in respect of his rehabilitation."

Leach’s absence a blow, but no replacement called in

The England management decided against naming Leach’s replacement for the remainder of this series. With three spinners in Rehan Ahmed, Shoaib Bashir, and Tom Hartley, England feel they can get the job done. Besides, batting great Joe Root can contribute with the ball in hand.

Meanwhile, last year, Leach missed the home Ashes owing to a stress fracture, and this time, he will again miss the India series with a knee injury.

In the next Test in Rajkot, England might play with two seamers and spinners, with James Anderson and Mark Wood likely to get paired up.

ALSO READ: 'Will talk about Bazball after series is over,' says India spinner Ravi Ashwin Per the statement released by the ECB, Leach underwent assessment in Abu Dhabi and will now head home for further treatment. "He will fly home from Abu Dhabi in the next 24 hours, where the England team have been staying ahead of the third Test in Rajkot, which starts on Thursday,” ECB’s latest statement said. "Leach will work closely with the England and Somerset medical teams in respect of his rehabilitation." Leach’s absence a blow, but no replacement called in The England management decided against naming Leach’s replacement for the remainder of this series.

IND vs ENG: Blow to England as Jack Leach ruled out of remaining India Tests due to knee injury

England captain Ben Stokes admitted there was a belief in the dressing room about chasing 399 against India on day four of the second Test in Vizag. England lost the game by 106 runs despite valiant efforts from Crawley, Foakes and the lower order. Bumrah and Ashwin starred for India as the hosts made a successful comeback in this five-match series.

"Coming into this last innings, we had full belief in ourselves that we could go and chase that down. The way in which we go about taking on challenges like that is what we're about, and the number of runs that we needed to get was just sort of another thing for us to try and try and chase down,” Stokes said at the post-match presentation.

Ruing the missed chance to go 2-0 up in this five-match series, Stokes said they backed themselves to trust the process and go for the win in the fourth innings. Stokes added with their newest style of attacking cricket, which the world now calls Bazball, they put India under pressure.

While Stokes backs England to approach remaining games in this series with the same fearless mindset, he congratulated India on being the better team on the day and winning when it mattered.

"I know we've got to give credit to [India captain] Rohit [Sharma], the way in which he led, and credit to the bowlers that every time that we would drag the momentum back towards us and sort of felt like we were getting on top of them, they were able to produce something to take the wicket and put us back."

James Anderson reveals Joe Root’s injured finger is not great at the moment, but if needed, the England veteran will come and bat in the fourth innings of the ongoing Vizag Test. The visiting side have a herculean task to beat India, who remain unbeaten in whites at home since their 1-2 loss to England in 2012/13. McCullum feels confident of the side's preparations in Abu Dhabi and emphasised that 'when to stick and when to twist' the nuances of the game will be a fascinating part. Speaking to the reporters in Hyderabad, McCullum said, "India is the land of opportunity and that's what sits in front of us now, we'll take the positive option. Other teams might be better, but we want to be the bravest. We've got to do that and that's got to be factored into selection, too." The New Zealander opined, "The guys walked away from Abu Dhabi with a huge amount of confidence that we've prepared as well as we possibly can. In the end, all you're trying to do is get guys in the frame of mind where they feel 10 foot tall and bulletproof when they walk out to play."
England's red-ball vice-captain Ollie Pope has conceded that there's going to be 'outside noise' about the pitches on their upcoming Test tour of India. England will be playing five Tests on the tour which begins on January 25 in Hyderabad. The pitches have always been the talking point in India given their tendency to turn earlier than expected during the five-day games. The English vice-captain, however, asserted that they need to be well equipped for the same.

“There will be a lot of outside noise,” Pope said while talking to the Guardian.

“And pitches can be a massive talking point. But you have to remember the two teams are playing on the exact same wicket, so we just need to be as well equipped as we can,” he added further.

Former England seamer Steve Harmison opened up on chatting with current Test captain Ben Stokes after publicly criticising the team’s preparation routine for India Tests, starting on January 25 in Hyderabad.

Harmison had earlier slammed the management’s call to train in Abu Dhabi for 11 days and arriving in India just three before the start of the first Test, saying instead the team should have been in India in the first place and play practice matches, something that’d have helped the bowlers in the longer run.

After his comments went viral, Steve and Stokes chatted like old mates and professionals, as narrated by the lanky seamer, and, while the details remain private, Harmison revealed what he made clear to Stokes about his thoughts on the team’s preparation.

“I had a good chat with Ben about it. It was two people talking who have a hell of a lot of respect for each other because I played with him and saw him growing up.
England's former spinner Monty Panesar hailed R Ashwin as a 'brilliant' spinner ahead of both sides' five Tests in the Indian subcontinent, starting on Jan 25 in Hyderabad. Panesar feels Ashwin has adapted to different conditions brilliantly, over the years, to deliver the goods for India in the purest format of the game. It is to be noted that the wily Indian off-spinner is just 10 wickets away from claiming 500 wickets in red-ball cricket.
England are set to tour India early next year for five Tests. On Monday (Dec 11), the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced a 16-member England squad featuring three uncapped players. Surrey speedster Gus Atkinson and off-spinners Tom Hartley (Lancashire) and Shoaib Bashir (Somerset) are part of the squad with England focusing on their spin department in their subcontinental tour. Meanwhile, it also sees the return of Rehan Ahmed who made his debut in the format during England's tour of Pakistan last December.

Talking about some other big points, Chris Woakes and Liam Dawson have been excluded, wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes has been recalled whereas Ollie Pope and Jack Leach mark their return.
After England's disastrous run in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition held in India, all-rounder Moeen Ali has backed the Jos Buttler-led English camp to defend their T20 World Cup title in the upcoming 2024 edition. In the first half of next year, the T20 WC will be held in the West Indies and the USA. England won the last edition, which was held in Australia in 2022. Recently, the national side had a woeful run in the ODI WC, entering as the defending champions and one of the favourites, where they failed to enter the semi-finals and ended seventh.

Moeen believes England is a better T20I side than in ODIs and has firmly backed them to lift the title next year. Speaking to Gulf News on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament, he said, "We want to try and win again. I feel we are a better Twenty20 side. I’m sure we will come back stronger."

Reflecting on England's poor run in the ODI WC, Moeen stated, "We didn’t play well throughout the World Cup. The batters were out of form and it happens in cricket. We’ve been so good over a long period now, but it is just one of those things that we just didn’t perform. It is a World Cup and a special one where all teams were good, but we weren’t just good."

England started the ODI WC with a loss to New Zealand and while they recovered with a big win over Bangladesh, everything went downhill from there on. They lost to Australia, India, South Africa, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka before ending their campaign with two back-to-back wins, over the Netherlands and Pakistan respectively.

England are the second-ranked side in T20Is currently. They will look to make a strong statement in the upcoming T20 WC in June 2024. At present, Buttler & Co. are in the West Indies for three ODIs and five T20Is.

After England's disastrous run in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition held in India, all-rounder Moeen Ali has backed the Jos Buttler-led English camp to defend their T20 World Cup title in the upcoming 2024 edition.

I’m sure we will come back stronger." Jos Buttler pens heartfelt note on failed World Cup title defence, vows to reflect on disappointing campaign

Defending champions England crashed out of the World Cup 2023 with just three wins from nine matches. England’s director of men’s cricket, Robert Key, took responsibility for the team’s below-par showing in India while backing the head coach, Matthew Mott and captain, Jos Buttler, saying it’s not their fault.

England’s title defence was down in the mud owing to mediocre performances with bat and ball throughout the tournament.

After suffering a defeat in the curtain-raiser against New Zealand by eight wickets, England beat Bangladesh in their next match. They lost their next five games, including one against Afghanistan in Delhi.

Though they were knocked out of the tournament by then, twin wins over the Netherlands and Pakistan helped England finish inside the top eight, earning them direct qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

With England registering their worst-ever show at the World Cups with six losses in the league matches, Key, who had arrived in India ahead of the Pakistan match, said he was taking all the calls, including prioritising Tests since his arrival.

England achieved unbelievable results in Test cricket, but with them playing lesser ODIs, mainly outside of England, it didn’t help the cause, as the results are there for everyone to see.

"I look at what I've not done rather than blaming everyone else. I hold myself accountable for a lot," he said. "Since I've started this job, it's very hard for me to be critical of Jos Buttler and Matthew Mott when I'm the one who, every single time a decision has been made around whether or not we focus on 50-over cricket, Test cricket or T20, I've always chosen Test cricket.

"When there was a choice in Pakistan over who got the best players, I've always said, 'Sorry, Test cricket gets that focus at the moment'. The same thing in South Africa. I've always chosen Test cricket. It's not easy for coaches and captains when you haven't got the ability to plan and have your best team,” Key added.

They have my backing - Key

To stick around with the white-ball teams in these testing times, Captain Jos Buttler said he wants to continue leading England post the World Cup, while Mott has Key’s backing as the head coach.

"That's not their fault. So, I feel like it's harsh if I turn around and blame the captain and coach. Really, I hold myself at the top of that list for what's gone wrong on this trip,” Key said.

"As far as I'm concerned, he gets my full backing. He's the person to get the first opportunity to put that right," he added. "But it's certainly not a case of saying 'carry on, let's keep doing everything the same and get the same result'.

Meanwhile, England will now travel to the Caribbean for the white-ball series, the squads for which were announced earlier.
