Security forces have killed two terrorists during an encounter in the Jammu and Kashmir's Awantipora town, days after targeted killing of yet another Kashmiri Pandit.

Four terrorists were killed during an encounter on the outskirts of Jammu in India, the police authorities said on Wednesday. The forces intercepted a truck in which the terrorists were travelling and all four of them were killed in retaliatory fire. The police also said that the truck caught fire during the gun battle and they were able to recover arms and ammunition from the vehicle.

"There was unusual movement of a truck in the area. Police stopped the truck at a check post. As security forces started searching the truck, terrorist hiding inside fired at security forces. All the terrorists were killed in retaliatory fire," Mukesh Singh, Additional Director General of police, said.

While the terrorists were all killed, the truck driver was able to escape and the police told reporters that they are conducting search operations in the nearby villages. The ammunition recovered from the truck included seven AK rifles, one M4 carbine, three pistols and other weapons.

The road was completely sealed off after the encounter, affecting traffic for quite some time.

Earlier, the Jammu police was able to defuse a 15 kg improvised explosive device (IED) in Udhampur to avoid a terrorist attack. According to PTI, the official statement said that it included “cylindrical shaped IED, 300-400 grams of RDX, seven 7.62 mm cartridges and five detonators”.

One person was detained with the police recovering a coded sheet and letter pad page belonging to the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group.

Around 16 security personnel and 19 civilians lost their lives in various terror-related incidents. Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested 46 active terrorists and 192 over-the-ground workers were also arrested this year in the Kashmir valley.&nbsp;

Two LeT terrorists killed in encounter near Amarnath yatra route

Two suspected bank robbers were killed in a shootout with police in western Canada on Tuesday (June 28). The encounter left six police officers injured. Local authorities said that a possible third suspect was still missing.

"This remains an ongoing police incident with the heavy police presence in the area," said Saanich police chief Dean Duthie at a press conference.

The armed suspects entered the bank around 1800 GMT. The bank is located in the city of Saanich which has a population of about 114,000 outside the British Columbia capital of Victoria, police said in a statement.

"Multiple officers responded to the scene and encountered the armed suspects who fired at police. Two suspects were shot by police and died at the scene," the statement said, adding that no bank employees or members of the public were physically injured.&nbsp;

"It's hard because we have members in the hospital right now suffering from serious injuries," Duthie said.

Three of the six police officers were undergoing a surgery as of late Tuesday. Other three police officers may be released from the hospital.

Earlier in the day, an evacuation order was issued for the buildings surrounding the bank because of a suspected explosive device found in the suspects' vehicle.

The day's events will "shake a lot of people," said Duthie, adding that federal police had been called to assist.

In the year 2022, 104 terrorists have been killed in over 60 operations in the Kashmir Valley. The police also claim to have killed 30 foreign terrorists in these operations. Security forces also lost 16 personnel this year, while 17 civilians were also killed in various incidents.

In the ensuing encounter, a categorized terrorist identified as Rasiq Ahmed Ganie resident of Shouch Kulgam of proscribed terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen&nbsp;was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of the encounter,'' said Jammu and Kashmir Police.&nbsp;

As per police records, the killed terrorist was involved in several terror crime cases including attacks on&nbsp;police/security forces and civilian atrocities.

One terrorist killed in Pulwama encounter, forces lead cordon and search operation

The 46-year-old Gonzalo Lopez, a Texas inmate suspected of murdering five people after he escaped from a prison bus was killed by authorities on Thursday.

He escaped the prison bus on May 12 after stabbing the bus driver and later he killed a family of five and stole their truck from a rural weekend cabin.

Lopez was killed about 10:30 pm Thursday in Jourdanton, Texas, about 35 miles (55km) south of San Antonio, said Jason Clark, spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

“Law enforcement in Atascosa county located the stolen vehicle disabled it with spike strips, and gunfire ensued,” Clark said in a statement. No officers were injured, he said.

Lopez crashed the vehicle and then engaged in a firefight with officers, he said.

"He fired several rounds at officers and was armed with an AR-15 and a pistol," Clark said, adding they believe the firearms were likely stolen from the home in Centerville where the family was killed.

The officers fired at Lopez and disabled the bus by shooting the rear tire, the department said. The bus then travelled a short distance before leaving the roadway, where Lopez got out and ran into the woods.

Lopez had been convicted of capital murder, attempted capital murder and aggravated kidnapping, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was serving two life sentences for those convictions.

Authorities had said Lopez was allegedly affiliated with the Mexican Mafia.

Two Lashkar terrorists killed in Anantnag encounter  

Jammu and Kashmir Police have killed two terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in an encounter in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

Police officers said that top the Pakistani LeT terrorist commander Haider was among the terrorists killed in the encounter and called it a big success.

Both were involved in the recent killings of civilians and police personnel.&nbsp;

The police were acting on specific information on the presence of terrorists in the Cheyan Devsar area of Kulgam, following which the police and army jointly launched a cordon and search operation.&nbsp;

“In the ensuing encounter, 2 terrorists of proscribed terror outfit LeT, including a Pakistani terrorist commander Haider, were killed and their bodies have been retrieved from the site of encounter. The other killed terrorist has been identified as Shahbaz Shah of Kulgam,” said Vijay Kumar, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir.

The police found arms and ammunition including, an AK-56 rifle with four Magazines, a Pistol, a UBGL grenade launcher, and ID Cards from the site of the encounter.

As per police records, deceased Haider was active for more than two years in North Kashmir and had recently shifted his base to South Kashmir.

He was involved in several terror crimes, civilian atrocities and various killings, including that of police personnel Mohammad Sultan and constable Fayaz Ahmad on November 10, 2021, at Gulshan Chowk, Bandipora.

Besides, he was also involved in an attack on a police party near Nishat Park Bandipora on February 11 this year, in which special police officer Zubair Ahmad was killed while four personnel were injured.&nbsp;

“The other killed terrorist Shahbaz Shah was a hybrid terrorist and was involved in the killing of a civilian Satish Kumar Singh on April 13 this year at Kakran area of Kulgam” Kumar said.

''Keeping in view the tourist movement and huge rush in the area, Police and CRPF exercised maximum restraint and carried out the operation in a professional manner to avoid any civilian causality. During the course of the evacuation of civilians, the trapped terrorist hurled a grenade resulting in minor splinter injuries to 03 Police/CRPF Jawans who were shifted to hospital for treatment of their injuries.'' J&amp;K Police chief Vijay Kumar said.

The slain terrorists were from Pakistan identified as Mohammad Bhai, also known as Abu Qasim/Mir Shoaib/Mudassir and Abu Arsalan, aka Khalid/Aadil.

''As per police records, both the killed terrorists were category ‘A’ terrorists and linked with LeT. Mohammad Bhai was active since 2019 while Abu Arsalan since 2021 in Central Kashmir. Both the terrorists were wanted for various terror-related activities,'' Vijay Kumar said.

Both the terrorists were carrying fake Aadhaar cards to conceal their identity.

Police also found incriminating materials, arms &amp; ammunition were from the site of the encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation.&nbsp;

For the first time in the last 30 years, the number of active terrorists has come down to less than 200, security forces in Jammu and Kashmir claimed on Thursday.

They also said that out of those active terrorists, 86 are local, while the rest are foreigners.&nbsp;

The Jammu and Kashmir Police informed that 128 local boys joined terror ranks this year in the Valley, of which 86 are still active. The rest of them have either been killed or arrested by the forces.

“'It’s for the first time that the number of terrorists has gone down below 200 in the Union Territory. Out of the 128 local youth who joined terror outfits, 73 were neutralised in different encounters while 16 were arrested. The rest are still active,”' said Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar.&nbsp;

While addressing a joint press conference, the top police official also said that 11 terrorists have been killed in the Kashmir Valley in the last 5 days, in which 6 of them were gunned down yesterday (December 29) during two anti-terrorist operations.

A terrorist was killed and a policeman injured in two separate encounters between security forces and ultras in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, police said.

While one encounter broke out in Anantnag district, another gunfight took place in Kulgam district&nbsp;both in south Kashmir.

A police official said the first encounter happened when security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Nowgam Shahabad of Dooru in the south Kashmir district acting on a specific input about the presence of militants.

He said as the forces were conducting the searches, the hiding militants fired upon them.

The forces retaliated, ensuing an encounter, the official said.

In the initial firing, a police personnel was injured and has been shifted to a hospital, the official added.

The exchange of firing was going on and further details were awaited, he said.

Meanwhile, another encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Mirhama area of the neighbouring Kulgam district, the official said.

He said one militant, his identity yet to be ascertained, was killed in the gunfight.

The operation is underway, he said.

Inspector-General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar identified the slain terrorist as Faheem Bhat, resident of Kadipora Anantnag.

“He has recently joined terror outfit ISJK and was involved in the killing of Martyr ASI Mohd Ashraf, who was posted at PS Bijbehara,” the IGP Kashmir said in a tweet.

The search operation turned into an encounter after the hiding terrorists fired on the forces, who retaliated, he said.

ASI Ashraf was shot dead by terrorists outside Bijbehara hospital on Wednesday evening.

The encounter at K Kalan, Srigufwara area of the south Kashmir district began late on Saturday night.

On Saturday, four militants, including an IED expert, were killed in twin encounters with security forces.

Acting on a tip-off about the presence of militants in Chowgam village in Shopian, security forces launched a cordon and search operation during the night, a police official said.

According to reports, both the killed terrorists were linked with proscribed terror outfit LeT and were involved in several terror crime cases.

They were also involved in motivating and recruiting the youth to join terror folds, a police official said.

In another encounter that broke out at Hardumir in the Tral area of Pulwama, two militants were killed, the official said. Both were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit AuGH.

A terrorist from the proscribed terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen was killed by security forces during an encounter in Zainapora area of Shopian district in India’s Kashmir state.

The armed forces had received a tip-off about the presence of a terrorist in the area following which cordon and search operation (CASO) was launched.

During the search operation, the terrorist started firing on security forces, who then retaliated, ensuing an encounter, police said.

“On the intervening night of December 14 and December 15, acting on a specific input regarding the presence of a terrorist in village Uzrampathri area of Pulwama, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by the police, armed forces from 44 Rashtriya rifles and 182 battalion&nbsp;from the Central Reserve Police Force in the said area,” the Jammu and Kashmir Police said in a statement.&nbsp;

The terrorist has been identified as Feroz Ahmad Dar, son of Abdul Khaliq resident of Heff-Shirmal Shopian.

Police said the terrorist was active since 2017 and was involved in several terror-related crime cases, including the attack on police guards in December 2018 at Zainapora resulting in the killing of four personnel and looting their service rifles.&nbsp;

“He was also involved in the killing of a girl, Ishrat Muneer daughter of Muneer Ahmad Bhat resident of Dangerpora Pulwama in February 2019. He was involved in the killing of a non-local labourer, Charnajeet, a resident of Punjab. Besides, he was also instrumental in luring the gullible youth to join terrorist ranks,” the police said.&nbsp;

The security forces recovered arms and ammunition, including one AK rifle, along with three magazines from him.

The Kashmir Valley had been witnessing a spurt in violence in recent days.

Wednesday’s gunfight is the third in four days in the village. On Sunday, a militant was killed in a gunfight in South Kashmir’s Awantipora.

On Monday, two militants were killed in a brief shootout at Rangreth, on the outskirts of Srinagar city.
