Security forces on Wednesday killed an unidentified militant in an encounter in a forest in Tral in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, police said.

Troops of 42 Rashtriya Rifles with Special Operations Group, Tral were carrying out a cordon and search operation during which the encounter broke out, news agency ANI reported.&nbsp;

On receipt of information, troops of 180 Batallion CRPF rushed to the spot for reinforcement. Further details are awaited.&nbsp;

"One militant was killed in the gun battle while there were no casualties among the security forces," he added. 
The identity and group affiliation of the slain militant is being ascertained.

More than 700 terrorists have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir over the last three years, the Home Ministry said on Tuesday, news agency PTI reported.&nbsp;

A total of 113 terrorists were killed between January and 16 June this year, 257 were killed in 2018, 213 in 2017 and 150 in 2016, taking the total number of those killed during the period to 733, it said.

As many as 112 civilians have also lost their lives during this period in the state. Of them, 15 had died in 2016, 40 in 2017, 39 in 2018 and 18 between January and 16 June, this year.

"The government has adopted a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism. Security forces are taking effective and continuous action in countering terrorism. This has resulted in a corresponding change in the number of such incidents, including casualties," Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

"Security forces keep a close watch on persons who attempt to provide support to terrorists and initiate action against them," he added.

"Zakir had a long history of terror crime records since 2013. He was initially associated with proscribed terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen (HM). Later he floated new terror outfit Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH).&nbsp;

He was wanted for his role in a series of terror crimes including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities," J&amp;K police said in a statement.&nbsp;

Fearing violence, the administration imposed curfew in parts of Kashmir valley and curfew-like restrictions in Srinagar city. Security forces were deployed in strength and barbed wires were installed in major roads.

Later, he founded Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind. Zakir openly threatened Hurriyat leadership for their pro-Pakistan idea and criticised people for raising Pakistani flag. Instead, he stood for the global Islamic movement of al-Qaeda, the idea of which was criticised by many in Kashmir.

He was declared as a proclaimed offender by NIA special court Mohali, Punjab in NIA case involving serial blasts at Jalandhar, Punjab in September 2018. Several members of his group have been eliminated in the past while others have been arrested in several areas.&nbsp;

Aurangzeb, a rifleman with 44 Rashtriya Rifles, was first kidnapped and later shot dead by terrorists in south Kashmir when he was travelling to his home in Poonch in a private vehicle last year.&nbsp;

Two other terrorists identified as Irfan of Wadoora Payeen in north Kashmir's Sopore and Muzaffar Sheikh of Tahab Pulwama were killed. Arms and ammunition were also recovered from the spot of the encounter.&nbsp;

Security forces also engaged terrorists in a brief shootout during the pre-dawn hours in Dehruna area of Anantnag. Although the forces widened the cordon, according to sources terrorists, at least two of them managed to slip away.

Clashes between protesters and security forces were also reported from Pulwama and Anantnag during the encounter.&nbsp;

Later in the day, based on a credible input, a cordon and search operation was launched by the Jammu and Kashmir Police along with the Indian Army and the CRPF in Hathlangoo village of Sopore in north Kashmir.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/gadchiroli-naxal-attack-15-commandos-police-driver-killed-combing-operation-underway-215035">face-off</a> took place around 5 am at a forest in Gonderas village when a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Special Task Force (STF) was out on an anti-Maoist operation, Deputy Inspector General (anti-naxal operations) Sundarraj P told PTI.

The patrolling team was moving through Gonderas, located along the border of Dantewada-Sukma districts, when a group of the ultras fired at them, leading to the gun-battle, he said.

After the exchange of fire stopped, bodies of two Maoists, including a woman, were recovered from the spot along with an Insas rifle and a 12 bore gun, the DIG said.

Besides, some ammunition, Maoist literature, items of daily use and other Naxal-related material were also seized from the spot, he said.

Those killed are yet to be identified, he said.

The incident took place around 450-km from state capital Raipur.

"No harm was reported to the security personnel in the gunfight. Search operation is underway in the area," he added.
