<p>The DRG personnel recovered arms, ammunition and IEDs from the encounter spot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>''We had information that Naxals threw some of the weapons in a pond near Sakler, Awasthi said and added forces entered the pond to recover the weapons &nbsp;but were fired upon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two jawans were also killed in the encounter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Total 1200 security personnel from STF, DRG, CRPF's CoBRA and special teams from Telangana took part in 'Operation Prahar-4'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The operation was launched yesterday in Battalion one area of Naxals in Saletong, Bade Kedwal, Sakler and nearby areas, Awasthi said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Six Maoists, carrying a total bounty of several lakhs on their heads, were gunned down by security forces in Odisha's Balangir and&nbspKandhamal districts early today, news agency ANI reported.&nbsp</p>

<p>Acting on a tip-off, a team of CRPF and District Voluntary Force (DVF) officials carried out an operation in the forest areas near Dudkamal village of the district around 1.30 am, PTI reported quoting a senior police officer said.</p>

<p>According to ANI, the operation is still underway.</p>

<p>"We had information that around a dozen leftwing extremists (LWE) had assembled at a hideout near Dudkamal village. When the security personnel approached the site, a fierce gun battle broke out between the two sides, resulting in the death of two rebels. The rest managed to flee taking advantage of the darkness, Balangir superintendent of Police K Siba Subramani said.</p>

<p>Describing the elimination of two rebels as a "major success", the SP said the operation would go a long way in breaking the network of the Maoists in the region.</p>

<p>The slain extremists were identified as CPI (Maoist) members Sanjib and Rakesh. Both hailed from neighbouring Chhattisgarh, he said.</p>

<p>"Sanjib, a divisional committee member, carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh over his head, while the bounty amount for Rakesh, an area committee member of Balangi-Baragarh division, was Rs 4 lakh," the officer stated, adding that one AK 47 rifle, an INSAS rifle and some ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter.&nbsp</p>

<p>Separatists, under the banner of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), had called for a strike to protest the killings.</p>

<p>The strike affected normal life in the Valley as most of the shops and other business establishments were shut, while public transport was off the roads, officials said.</p>

<p>Schools and colleges remained closed while universities postponed the examinations scheduled to be held Tuesday.<br />

<p>Reports say that as soon as gunshots were heard, locals from the village gathered near the spot and staged protests in an attempt to break the cordon and help the militants escape.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Locals claim that at least 12 people were injured during the protests till now and police and paramilitary forces have resorted to heavy tear smoke shelling and pellet firing to disperse the crowd.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The militants have not been identified yet and the internet has been shut in order to prevent further flow of information.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The police has arrested a 20-year- old woman Naxal commander, carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on her head, after an encounter with the ultras in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district, an official said today.</p>

<p>The cadre, identified as Bukal alias Bukali, was apprehended yesterday from a forest near Kotmeta Tumdiwal village when a team of local police was out on a search operation, Kondagaon's Additional Superintendent of Police Maheshwar Nag told.</p>

<p>When the patrolling squad reached Kotmeta Tumdiwal, located around 300 km from the capital, a group of ultras started firing on them, leading to a gun-battle, he said.</p>

<p>However, the ultras soon fled the spot when the security personnel started zeroing-in on them.<br />
But the police caught the woman Naxal after a brief chase, he said.</p>

<p>Bukali, active as the janmilitia commander, was allegedly involved in several Naxal-related incidents, including attacks on police teams, looting polling boxes in panchayat elections, and also robbing weapons, he added.&nbsp</p>

<p>The reports added that clashes erupted in Shopian after locals tried to march to the encounter site.</p>

<p>The reports said that at least 50 people have been injured. And that many of them have pellet injuries and have been admitted to Shopian Hospital.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The security forces also seized arms and explosives from their hideout.</p>

<p>It is suspected that the rebels had stored those to attack the jawans in future, they said.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the security forces have intensified combing operation in Koraput district bordering Chhattisgarh and Lamataput area bordering Malkangiri district for the past couple of days.</p>

<p>The security forces have received information about plans of the Maoists to carry out more attacks on the jawans in these areas, they said.</p>

The arms and explosives have been hidden in a bunker in the forest. It is suspected that the rebels had stored those to attack the jawans in future, they said. Meanwhile, the security forces have intensified combing operation in Koraput district bordering Chhattisgarh and Lamataput area bordering Malkangiri district for the past couple of days. The security forces have received information about plans of the Maoists to carry out more attacks on the jawans in these areas, they said.
