A terrorist from the proscribed terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen was killed by security forces during an encounter in Zainapora area of Shopian district in Kashmir.

The armed forces had received a tip-off about the presence of a terrorist in the area following which cordon and search operation (CASO) was launched.

During the search operation, the terrorist started firing on security forces, who then retaliated, ensuing an encounter, police said.

“On the intervening night of December 14 and December 15, acting on a specific input regarding the presence of a terrorist in village Uzrampathri area of Pulwama, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by the police, armed forces from 44 Rashtriya rifles and 182 battalion&nbsp;from the Central Reserve Police Force in the said area,” the Jammu and Kashmir Police said in a statement.&nbsp;

The terrorist has been identified as Feroz Ahmad Dar, son of Abdul Khaliq resident of Heff-Shirmal Shopian.

Police said the terrorist was active since 2017 and was involved in several terror-related crime cases, including the attack on police guards in December 2018 at Zainapora resulting in the killing of four personnel and looting their service rifles.&nbsp;

“He was also involved in the killing of a girl, Ishrat Muneer daughter of Muneer Ahmad Bhat resident of Dangerpora Pulwama in February 2019. He was involved in the killing of a non-local labourer, Charnajeet, a resident of Punjab. Besides, he was also instrumental in luring the gullible youth to join terrorist ranks,” the police said.&nbsp;

The security forces recovered arms and ammunition, including one AK rifle, along with three magazines from him.

The Kashmir Valley had been witnessing a spurt in violence in recent days.

Wednesday’s gunfight is the third in four days in the village. On Sunday, a militant was killed in a gunfight in South Kashmir’s Awantipora.

On Monday, two militants were killed in a brief shootout at Rangreth, on the outskirts of Srinagar city.

Meanwhile, in an encounter with security forces, a terrorist was also killed in Poonch district on Tuesday, as per authorities. &nbsp;&nbsp;

On receiving intelligence inputs, the army and the Jammu and Kashmir police launched an operation in Behramgala area of Poonch, said a defence spokesperson. &nbsp;&nbsp;

During the operation, the terrorists opened fire at the security personnel in an attempt to flee in the early hours of Tuesday, spokesperson added. &nbsp;&nbsp;

As troops retaliated, one terrorist was killed in the encounter, the spokesperson further said. &nbsp;

The attack on the police bus, was carried out by little known outfit, Kashmir Tigers, which is believed to be the front of Jaish-e-Mohammad, at Zewan on the outskirts of Srinagar on Monday. &nbsp;

In the attack, assistant sub inspector Ghulam Hassan and constable Shafeeq Ali were killed. Around 12 others, including Rameez, had got hurt. &nbsp;

Three persons, including a mother-son duo, were detained for questioning during an ongoing search operation in the forest belt of Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch and Rajouri border districts where nine soldiers were killed in two separate gunfights with terrorists over the past week, officials said on Sunday.

Five Army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer (JCO), laid down their lives in a fierce gunfight during a counter-insurgency operation in Surankote forest on Monday. Four soldiers, including another JCO, died in another encounter in the Mendhar sector on Thursday evening.

It was a matter of investigation whether they provided food and shelter to the terrorists voluntarily or at gunpoint, they said.

The officials underlined that the area is mountainous and the forest is dense, which makes the operation difficult and dangerous.

So far, contact with hiding terrorists was established thrice -- first on October 11 in Poonch's Surankote which was followed by another exchange of fire between the security forces and the fleeing terrorists in the adjoining Thanamandi forest in Rajouri district the same day but the ultras managed their escape in both the encounters.

The third encounter took place in the Nar Khas forest in the Mendhar area of Poonch on Thursday evening.

"The presence of terrorists in the forest area connecting Poonch and Rajouri was observed two-and-a-half months ago and accordingly tactical operations were launched to track them down," Deputy Inspector General of Police, Rajouri-Poonch range, Vivek Gupta said on Saturday.

"A joint security grid was tracking different groups of terrorists but sometimes operations take time depending on the topography of the area. Contact with the terrorists was established thrice this week based on intelligence inputs," the officer said.

The terrorists are holed up and the joint forces are on the job to take the operation to the logical conclusion, he added.

Officials said the entire forest area from Mendhar to Thanamandi remains under a strict cordon and a massive search operation is on to neutralise the terrorists moving from one place to another in an attempt to escape the dragnet.

The Army has deployed para-commandos and a helicopter was also seen hovering over the forest area for surveillance on Saturday.

Officials said the traffic between Mendhar and Thanamandi along the Jammu-Rajouri highway remained suspended for the third day on Sunday in the wake of the ongoing operation.

Rajouri and Poonch in the Jammu region have witnessed a rise in infiltration attempts since June this year. Nine terrorists have been killed in separate encounters.

"We offered them to surrender but they kept firing, triggering an encounter. They were trapped in a three-storey building, which is a concrete one. We fired grenades and the building caught fire. One of the slain militants has been identified as Umar Khanday of LeT and the other has been identified as Muhammad Sultan, who was the LeT commander .”

Police said that Umar Khanday was involved in the killing of two policemen in the Baghat area of Srinagar. Security is still on high alert across the Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;

The aim is for Bepi to be moving slow enough it can drop into a stable orbit. This should happen by the end of 2025.

For this first flyby, the timing of closest approach was calculated to be 23:34 GMT. At that moment, Bepi would have been moving with a velocity over 50km/s (30 miles/s) to the Sun.

The probe was busy snapping pictures. However, its high-resolution science cameras were not used as these cannot actually see anything currently because they are tucked inside the spacecraft stack.

Dave Rothery, a professor of planetary geosciences at the UK's Open University, was quoted by the BBC as saying, "I think we'll recognise Kuiper Crater. It's bright and has this big fan of ejecta rays."

He added, "We'll just have to wait and see. We know what should be in the field of view but given the lighting conditions and what these small cameras are capable of - there's some uncertainty."&nbsp;

"A BSF soldier was killed in action (KIA) and the firefight stopped at 0400 hours," Col Kalia said in a statement.

He said more troops were rushed to the area and the movement of the militants was tracked with the help of surveillance devices.

"Contact was re-established at 1020 hours when the heavy fire was drawn by own search parties approximately 1.5 km from the LoC. In the ensuing firefight, two more terrorists were killed. Own troops suffered three KIA and two injured," Col Kalia said.

This is the highest number of army casualties along the Line of Control in Kashmir since April this year. Five Indian troops and an equal number of militants were killed in April this year when armed militants were challenged by Indian troops in the area.&nbsp;
