<p>The United States on Friday (October 20) released an intelligence report it said it had sent to more than 100 countries saying that it has found that Russia is trying to undermine democratic elections worldwide. The intelligence report claims that Russia is using social media, spies and its state-run media to erode public faith in the integrity of elections.</p>

<p>"This is a global phenomenon," said the assessment. "Our information indicates that senior Russian government officials, including the Kremlin, see value in this type of influence operation and perceive it to be effective."</p>

<p>Reuters cited an unnamed senior official in the US Department of State who said that Russian attempts to intensify election interference efforts were bolstered by its success in spreading disinformation about&nbsp;US Presidential Elections 2020.</p>

<p>"Success breeds more, and we definitely see the US elections as a catalyst," the official said.</p>

<p>There was no immediate reaction from Russia. Currently, relations between the US and Russia are strained over Russian invasion of Ukraine. The US has led Western response to the invasion and has imposed sanctions to isolate Russia globally.</p>

<p>The official reportedly added that Washington was privately briefing recipient governments and shared the assessment "to get ahead of elections that are over the horizon over the next year," the official said.</p>

<p>Washington "recognizes its own vulnerability to this threat," said the report. It mentions that US intelligence agencies found that "Russian actors spread and amplified information to undermine public confidence in the US 2020 election."</p>

<p>Former US president Donald Trump, who lost to the incumbent Joe Biden in 2020 election has not, to date, conceded his defeat and has maintained that the elections were 'rigged'. His attempts to overturn the election results were rejected by courts across America, including the US Supreme Court. But he has not budged from his position.</p>

<p>Russia "utilises both overt and covert mechanisms, including influence networks and proxies managed" by Russian spy services, the report said.</p>

<p>As an example, the report mentions how Russia's FSB security service worked behind the scenes in order to organise election day protests, intimidate election workers and "sabotage overseas voting" in an unnamed European country's 2020 election.</p>

<p>Tusk, a former European Council president, suggested that PiS might have ambitions to lead Poland out of the EU, a claim that PiS denies.</p>

<p>In the final opinion polls, two parties were shown in a dead heat with left-wing SMER-SSD led by populist former PM Fico and the centrist Progressive Slovakia (PS) of European Parliament Vice-Speaker Michal Simecka.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The winner is expected to get the first chance to try to form a government to replace the caretaker administration which has been running the country since May.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Independent political analyst Grigorij Meseznikov told AFP the vote would determine Bratislava’s focus “in foreign policy, defence and security policy, but also...the future of democracy”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The election also comes after the centre-right coalition government collapsed last year, triggering this election a half-year early.</p>

<h2><strong>What’s at stake?</strong></h2>

<p>Ahead of the elections, in a heated debate against candidates, Fico took aim at the EU, NATO and the LGBTQ+ minority. He also rejected the prospect of providing any further military aid to Ukraine.</p>

<p>A government led by Fico is also expected to join Hungary as one of the EU nations challenging the 27-nation bloc’s consensus on support for Ukraine. On the other hand, a government led by Simecka would continue the country’s strong backing for Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A SMER-SD party win would also add to a bloc of eastern ex-Communist states with governments publicly hostile to liberalism along with Poland’s nationalist PiS, although Warsaw is a staunch supporter of Kyiv.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A PS-led government led by Simecka would put Slovakia in a pro-integration and liberal camp in the EU on issues such as majority voting to make the bloc more flexible, green policies and LGBTQ+ rights.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, neither of the parties is expected to win a majority which means that the future government is also expected to depend on results for over half a dozen smaller parties, from libertarians to far-right extremists.</p>

<p>It is also said that the moderate-left Hlas (Voice) of Peter Pellegrini who was once a part of SMER-SSD and served as the PM between 2018 and 2022, is expected to come in third and may influence the formation of the next government.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Elect the future’</strong></h2>

<p>While voting at a school in the capital city of Bratislava, Simecka has urged Slovaks to “elect the future” and vowed to rid Slovakia of “the past,” in an apparent reference to Fico’s three terms as the PM.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Simecka also said that he expects it to be a tight vote in which “each ballot will count,” as per AFP. He added, “I hope that...whatever government comes out of this election will continue to support Ukraine.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the election has also been marked by disinformation where analyses have shown half of the Slovak population is prone to believing disinformation, largely spread by the Kremlin, reported AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Fico benefited from all that anxiety brought by the (coronavirus) pandemic and the (Ukraine) war, by the anger spreading in Slovakia in the past three years, and fuelling that anger,” said sociologist Michal Vasecka, from the Bratislava Policy Institute, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

The application was approved by US Citizenship and Immigration Services.&nbsp;H1-B visa allows employers in the US to recruit foreign workers with specialised skills to work in the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The system is “bad for everyone involved,” Ramaswamy told Politico.</p>

<p>One of the central questions looming over this election is the future of India-Maldives relations if the pro-China presidential candidate of the opposing PPM-PNC coalition Mohamed Muizzu, who took the lead in the first round of elections, secures victory over ruling Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.</p>

<p>Muizzu's association with the India-out campaign has raised concerns, but the situation is nuanced. Aditya Shivamurthy explained that Muizzu's stance on India has appeared to be diluted during the campaign in comparison to the stance of Yameen.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While he was once aligned with the India-out campaign, his recent actions suggest a shift away from anti-Indian rhetoric.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the absence of India-out campaign T-shirts and reduced prominence in anti-India protests indicate a possible softening of his stance, the expert told WION.&nbsp;However, there is an indirect reference to India in all his campaigns as he has called for foreign soldiers to leave the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"That said, he has continued to be a good advocate for good relations with China. He has also said that once he comes to power he will he will have more people-to-people contacts and bringing-in more Chinese tourists to the Maldives so that story always exists. He has always been a pro-China guy and it continues to be that way unless there is something&nbsp;substantial that happens," the expert said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Nasheed as king-maker&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>None of the candidates managed to secure more than 50 per cent of the vote required for a first-round victory held on September 9.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former President and current Speaker of the People's Majlis (parliament), Mohamed Nasheed, who had previously parted ways with the ruling Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) to form his own party, The Democrats, has emerged as a pivotal figure leading up to the runoff.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Democrats secured a third-place finish in the initial round, prompting both President Solih's MDP and the PPM to seek Nasheed's support.&nbsp;His support may play a crucial role in determining the election's outcome.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Aditya Shivamurthy said that the second round is where the real political manoeuvring takes place, as parties and candidates strive to secure support and form strategic alliances.</p>

<p>The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has signalled its willingness to engage with the Democrats, indicating a potential alliance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the expert said, "The Democrats have not shown anything as such probably the Democrats trying to indicate that the MDP has been at a loss by losing Nasheed. They have not yet made it clear if they want to join the MDP or PPM. They are still keeping their options open."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, Democrat member Mohamed Nasheed has reportedly also hinted that he may be considering the possibility of supporting Muizzu of the PPM-PNC coalition. But it is yet to be seen how things pan out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On this, the expert said, "Surprisingly this time the Democrats are the king-makers, Nasheed is the king-maker, and Qasim and other players are far beyond the race."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The political landscape also includes other candidates, such as Qasim Ibrahim from the Jumhooree Party, Umar Naseer as an independent presidential candidate.</p>

<p>Their positions and alliances are yet to crystallize fully.</p>

<p>MNP's leader Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim on Tuesday (September 12) joined hands with the opposition PPM-PNC coalition.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The expert said what's noteworthy is that the MDP had previously built "a kind of fortress where they didn't really interact with other parties much."</p>

<p>"In the initial days, when Nasheed split and the coalition was breaking apart MDP made sure that they had the Maldives development alliance on their side, the Adhaalath Party on their side but apart from those two parties they never really had this vigour to reach out to other parties and build up broader coalition."&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the other hand, he noted, "PPM, the Democrates, the Jumhooree Party and other independent candidates they consistently met each other... try to keep negotiations open."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Here is where I see the progressive alliance being on a bit of an advantage," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Maldivian presidential elections</strong></h2>

<p>During the first round of elections, Mohamed Nasheed's proxy candidate, Ilyas Labeeb, who garnered 15,839 votes, accounting for 7.18 per cent of the total secured the third position.</p>

<p>Notably, the independent candidate Umar Naseer emerged as the closest competitor to The Democrats, amassing less than half the votes secured by Nasheed's party, with a total of 6,343 votes, representing 2.87 per cent of the vote share.</p>

<p>Qasim Ibrahim from the Jumhooree Party, a familiar face in the race, lagged behind the independent candidate Umar Naseer, suggesting a decline in his popularity compared to previous elections.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ibrahim secured only 5,460 votes, making up 2.47 per cent of the total votes.</p>

<p>The Maldivian National Party's Mohamed Nazim, who positioned himself as the leader of the 'Indians-out' campaign, failed to gain significant traction and received only 1,907 votes, accounting for 0.86 per cent of the total votes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It's worth noting that in the upcoming second round, only the candidates who placed first and second will compete for the presidency.</p>
